Eighteen-year-old to race La Choralis Fourmies in first Movistar outing
Promising 18-year-old Cat Ferguson will make her professional debut this Sunday at the one-day event La Choralis Fourmies
La Choralis Fourmies will be the longest race of the teenager's young career
She will line up in France alongside teammates Lucía Ruiz
and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift stage winner Emma Norsgaard
When Ferguson signed with Movistar last year
she described the move as a "dream come true"
"From our first meeting it felt like such a welcoming and family environment
with a great focus on developing my attributes at WorldTour level," she said
"I look forward to learning from the best and most experienced riders in the world
and couldn't think of a better team to help me make the step up to elite cycling."
finishing on the podium in every race she started
including the overall victories at three Nations Cup events and the British junior road race title
the 18-year-old claimed her first rainbow jerseys at the Junior Track World Championships
She won the team pursuit with a world-record ride alongside Imogen Wolff
who has also signed a three-year deal with Movistar
Ferguson then sealed the omnium title the following day
two years younger than other riders on the start list
She finished runner-up in the junior road race at the World Championships last August
cementing her status as one of the most promising riders in the circuit
"If you told me at the start of the season I’d come second here
No further details have been released about the rest of Ferguson's race calendar with Movistar this season

Tom likes it most when the road goes uphill
and actively seeks out double-figure gradients on his rides
His best result is 28th in a hill-climb competition
Imogen Wolff (Great Britain) won the Piccolo Trofeo Binda in March
Brit to make debut at Sunday's La Choralis Fourmies Féminine as junior MTB World Champion starts in 2025
With Chladonová and Wolff signed until 2027 on three-year deals
Visma have secured heaps of potential for the coming seasons
alongside the experience and brilliance of Pauline Ferrand-Prévot
who is their marquee signing for 2025 onwards.
Wolff's biggest success on the road came in March when she soloed to victory at Piccolo Trofeo Binda
the junior version of the Women's WorldTour race in Italy
She's also had big wins on the track as the current junior points race and team pursuit world champion
Chladonová has largely had road success on home roads in Slovakia
where she has dominated the junior circuit and been both junior national road race and time trial champion
Both multi-discipline riders, Chladonová and Wolff still intend to ride cyclocross alongside road as they progress in their development, with Visma’s success at combing the two being evident in the form of two-time CX world champ Fem van Empel completing her first full road season this year
I hope I can learn a lot in the peloton during the races and eventually grow as a rider to a very high level.”
“The development opportunities the team offers for young talents fit my future perfectly
It allows me to combine my favourite discipline
with road cycling,” said Chladonová
who was third at junior CX worlds in February behind Ferguson and champion Célia Gery
“I've been riding for a small family team for the past few years
and then to now join one of the biggest WorldTour teams will be a big change for me
I'm excited to have been given this opportunity.”
After making the step up so young at just 18
Visma didn’t look to put any pressure on their new signings’ shoulders
with development and integrating Wolff and Chladonová into the WorldTour being key
it was quickly clear that a lot of attention would be paid to my development,” said Wolff
“They had a clear plan for the coming years
without much pressure and with room to learn
“Imogen and Viktória have achieved very good results in the past years
We want both riders to slowly grow to WorldTour level,” said women’s Team manager Rutger Tijssen
we expect them to grow and discover what they are good at
The big results are less important in the first years.”

Time Merlier of Soudal-QuickStep showed his sprinting prowess to take victory in the GP de Fourmies
The 30-year-old Belgian was a cut above the rest on Sunday afternoon
Tim Merlier netted Soudal Quick-Step’s 46th success of the season at the GP Fourmies, where he became the first Belgian in nine years to cross the finish line victorious. It was the 30-year-old ninth win of the season, moving him closer to his goal of going into double-digits in his first year with the Wolfpack – a target he talked about recently
An undulating 197.6km course awaited the riders at the 90th edition of the French one-day race
where after a furious start with multiple attacks
the pace relented and five riders rode clear of the peloton
Soudal Quick-Step posted Tim Declercq at the front of the bunch
and “El Tractor” did again a flawless job
keeping the gap in check before gradually reducing it with each kilometer
unfazed by the many short climbs along the route
but our team made sure of bringing him back with three kilometers to go
but Tim Merlier remained in an excellent position at all times and opened up his sprint the moment he rounded the last bend of the race
giving no chance to his opponents and sailing to a clear win
“The team did a great job today and I must thank them for that
I also had a good feeling and lots of confidence
which helped me when I lost the boys a bit in that crazy final kilometer
I’m looking forward now to my next appointment

a maker of fastening systems and mechanical components
has agreed to purchase all electricity generated from Iberdrola SA’s Florembeau wind farm in the French region of Pas-de-Calais.
The five-turbine facility in the commune of Créquy has a total output of 10.25 megawatts (MW)
Agrati is entitled to 21 gigawatt hours a year
to be supplied to three Agrati sites producing fastening systems in the communes of Avressieux
The wind farm will cover 53 percent of the sites’ energy needs starting 2025
resulting in a reduction of 33 percent in Agrati’s current carbon dioxide emissions in France
according to Spanish electric utility Iberdrola
“By powering our French production sites with renewable energy
we are not only reducing CO2 emissions by 2.200 tons annually but also aligning our operations with our long-term commitment to environmental responsibility”
Iberdrola has long-term power supply deals in several countries including Australia
The electricity comes from offshore and onshore wind projects
In 2023 it was the leading European utility in both deals and volume of energy sold to industrial customers in the continent with almost 1,000 MW signed
International firms that have committed to buying Iberdrola power include ABInBev
Iberdrola took full ownership of subsidiary Avangrid Inc
by acquiring the remaining 18.4 percent shares it did not already own
“The merger will allow Iberdrola to invest in the United States more efficiently”
Avangrid’s assets amount to $46 billion
With a capacity of 8,700 MW of renewable energy
Avangrid distributes power to seven million people across Connecticut
Avangrid won two offshore wind lease areas in the Gulf of Maine last year
OCS-A 0564 spans 98,565 acres while OCS-A 0568 covers 124,897 acres
Avangrid said in a press release October 29
“Avangrid will work to develop the lease areas
with the potential to deliver 3 Gigawatts of clean power
to help meet the energy needs of the New England region and advance the United States 30 GW offshore wind target”
“Not including the lease area secured today
Avangrid has a projected offshore wind pipeline of over 5 GW on the East Coast of the United States – enough to power more than two million households”

Multi-discipline ace kicked to second in her debut with Movistar and is swinging for the fences at junior road worlds: 'I won’t be happy with anything other than gold.'
How about this for a statistic: 15 road and five cyclocross races in 2024 – eight victories
Has anyone in world cycling had a more consistent and impressive season than women’s cycling’s newest star, Cat Ferguson
The British 18-year-old is a junior national time trial
a recent Omnium and team pursuit world champion
and red hot favorite to win the upcoming junior world championships road race
Movistar made headlines for snapping Ferguson up on a three-year deal last September when she was still just 17
and she made her debut in professional racing on September 8
spectacularly sprinting to second at La Choralis Fourmies Féminie against much older opposition
ever seen such an exciting and unique talent with so many capacities,” Sebastián Unzué
“She can perform on pretty much any terrain and in any discipline
Followers of the British cycling scene have been aware of Ferguson for a while
the latest product out of Yorkshire excelling in junior categories
But it took a while for cycling to be her focus: she competed in slalom skiing and even finished third at the European championships as a 12-year-old
and my dad wasn’t sure it was the right thing for me to stop
but cycling was the one for me,” she told Velo
she was introduced to the same hilly home roads as Tom Pidcock and Lizzie Deignan from a young age
“I looked up to her ever since 2010 when I was only four
She is everything I look to be and for me she is the definition of the best possible athlete.”
He established the highly successful Shibden Apex RT junior team in 2023 to help progress his daughter and other talents like Imogen Wolff who has since signed for Visma-Lease a Bike
“The environment I’ve had growing up has led to the success I’ve had,” Ferguson said
Alongside sitting her exams in her final year of education – scoring three straight A grades – Ferguson has been competing around the world in 2024
she claimed the Omnium world title in China despite crashing twice
“I think that’s the result I am most proud of because so many things went wrong and I had to fight back,” she said
“I’m also proud and happy with the silvers I’ve had at the road and cross worlds in the past year
but it made me so much more hungry for the next worlds
and made me realize how disappointed I was with second place
Only crazy if you’re as blessed as Ferguson
I won’t be thinking like that in the WorldTour
When Movistar first became aware of Ferguson
they knew they had to beat the stiff competition to secure her signature
In persuading her to join the Spanish giants
Unzué had to reassure Ferguson that her development would not be rushed
“One of the many great things about Cat is that she’s really smart
She is not wanting to be in the big races straight away,” Unzué continued
“She is obviously an amazing talent and it’s easy to get excited by her potential

and cyclocross – she has two silver medals from recent cyclocross worlds – but knows that she’ll have to make some sacrifices as her career progresses
but managing to do all the biggest races in all three disciplines is difficult
especially because I’d need to be in Manchester a lot [for the British national velodrome],” she said
“I think one year I’ll focus more on cross
with the road always there as priority number one.”
there is a trend of women’s teams signing ever younger riders
“We’re seeing the exact same thing as what happened five years ago in men’s cycling,” Unzué commented
“We saw Lidl-Trek betting hugely on young talent last year and I’m sure they’re happy and confident it will pay off
and Cofidis with Julie Bego are also great examples of signing young
“Youngsters nowadays have better resources
more information and knowledge is available to them
and it means they’re much more ready and prepared to turn professional than they were 10 years ago
“But we have to let everything process and develop in an organic and natural way instead of pressurizing them and giving them a lot of responsibility
We want them still competing at the highest level at 32
It’s often difficult to categorize the type of race a junior will specialize in at the professional level
but Ferguson has a good idea where she’ll have most success
“Juniors can get away with being good at everything
but I think I’ll be a classics-type one-day rider,” she said
“I’ve grown up on rolling roads and I’ve got a good sprint if it comes down to a reduced bunch finish
I’ve developed my one to five-minute power on the track
Her home terrain is a big part of her identity
“Yorkshire has formed me as a person and as a bike rider
I always want to be the best and I pride myself on that,” she added
but you still have to go out and train for four hours after school
Every day I want to improve to be better than I was the day before.”
She told Velo before her successful bow with Movistar that her entrance into the professional ranks would be an “unknown thing” and that she had “lots of new things to learn,” adding: “There’s no pressure or nerves and I’m just super excited.”
A handful of one-day races with the Spanish team is on her calendar before beginning her cyclocross season in mid-December
But before that is her ultimate season goal: the road world championships in Zurich where she’ll be looking to upgrade silver to gold in the junior road race on September 26
“I was disappointed with second last year in Glasgow because it was a home race
“I’ve said all year that if I could win one race this season
I won’t be happy with anything other than gold.”

Dutchman beats Malucelli and Peñalver to the line as breakaway caught just 300 metres from the finish
Arvid De Kleijn (Tudor Pro Cycling) sprinted to victory on stage 4 of the Tour de Langkawi in Bentong
outpacing stage 2 winner Matteo Malucelli (JCL Team Ukyo) at the line
The Dutchman claimed his fourth win of the season at the end of the flat 131km stage with Manuel Peñalver (Polti-Kometa) rounding out the podium
The bunch sprint finish was set up late on in the stage after the six-man breakaway
which included Stefan De Bod (EF Education-EasyPost)
Joan Bou (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Manuele Tarozzi (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) was caught just 300 metres from the finish
Tudor's lead-out proved the best among the sprint squads
with Maikel Zijlaard leading out his countryman to take the win
Malucelli continues to lead the points classification with 34 points to De Kleijn's 30
Max Poole (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) continues in the overall race lead with a six-second advantage over second-placed Thomas Pesenti (JCL Team Ukyo)
starting with the climb where I think that a lot of sprinters suffered to go over
and after with the strong break," De Kleijn said after the stage
but we know how strong he is and I just had to focus on the sprint
especially after the first two stages where I made some mistakes
Sprinting here is different than in Europe but it’s a good learning to do these high-speed sprints
There’s more to come and I look forward to the next sprints."

Get ready for the next generation of British success
but can it last forever with a shrinking calendar
There are two types of headlines about British cycling at the moment
both of which you will have seen on our website over the past couple of years
after both signed three-year deals; meanwhile
their fellow junior track world champion Imogen Wolff is heading to Visma-Lease a Bike
The IPT devo team are taking on board Fin Tarling
the younger brother of TT sensation Josh Tarling
Matt Brennan will be in Visma’s elite team next year
while Bob Donaldson has joined Jayco AlUla
there would be just one men’s Continental team left - Saint Piran - and they are already the only senior squad anyway
There is not a defined pathway for riders to take from the bottom to the top
but the dichotomy between the success of Britain’s youngsters and the state of its domestic scene is stark right now
There are still so many good things to highlight and trumpet
there are many fault lines underneath the domestic scene that need looking at
Let’s hope that this golden generation is not the last

Broken collarbone for Frank Schleck after Fleche Wallonne crash
Schleck provided an update on his injury and recovery via the Trek-Segafredo team website
"The crash in Fleche broke my collarbone in three pieces
and splits of the bone had to be removed so there is quite a bit of bone missing," Schleck said of the accident. "Two weeks ago we did the surgery and fixed the collarbone with a plate and 10 screws
So in 5 to 7 days I will have more X-rays to see if the bone has made progress and started the calcification."
"It is still painful and I have not reached the full range of movement but I am back on the bike with training adapted to the pain
When I will start back to full training is too early to say
I am in contact with the team's medical staff and we'll know more after the next examination
but I am confident I will be back to full training soon
Schleck added that he can laugh at his current situation
explaining that having broken his left-collarbone in 2010
"I can believe I am again symmetrical and in total balance again - I'll be stronger when I come back!"
Schleck is confident he can deliver for the team in July
"If I can say one thing about myself it's that I am very hard on myself and I will not let this crash change anything of my passion and love of cycling
I am focused on the Tour de France and I want to get to the Tour in high shape - no excuses
The team can rely on me that we will do a great Tour," said Schleck who has finished top-five at the French Grand Tour in three occasions
"I had a complicated operation on my nose last Tuesday that went very well and the doctor was happy with the results
Until then my respiration was not very good
the bones needed to be adjusted into a good position," said Felline. "On the 16th I will have another examination for nose
and also for the neck [fracture at the base of the skull]
If all is okay and everything continues to be stable
Felline was suffering from infection earlier in the season before his Amstel Gold Race crash
"First dealing with the infection for three weeks
and I was just starting to feel good again after that
Sometimes I ask myself why all these bad things have to happen in one period," said Felline
"But this is the life – everything does not always happen the way you want; it's not perfect
A lot of people are saying to me when I will come back I will be stronger
And now I understand what they mean: You pass through these difficult times and it makes you mentally stronger."
Felline is also targeting a return to racing in July but will assess his goals once he is able to turn the pedals
"I want to come back if possible this summer – July is what I hope
then I will start back with some stationary training," he added
EPERNAY: In the space of 215 kilometers (134 miles)
the Tour de France goes from one extreme to the other
After leaving Belgium to enter France on Monday
riders pedaled through the small town of Fourmies
the symbol of working-class symbol and pride
they reached the glitzy Avenue de Champagne in Epernay
a UNESCO World Heritage site home to the most prestigious Champagne houses
during the first French celebration of International Worker's Day
nine protesters were killed in Fourmies and several dozens injured when soldiers opened fire on a peaceful crowd which gathered in the industrial northern town
Socialist leader Jean Jaures came to Fourmies soon after the killings and delivered a powerful speech which served as a trigger for the development and political coordination of the French working class
The massacre is still remembered with marches every May 1
When winner Julian Alaphilippe approached the finish line to Stage 3
the Champagne Avenue was bathed in bright sunshine
he rode past a statue of Dom Perignon - a monk who lent his name to one of the most famous brands of Champagne - and trendy revelers were sipping bubbly on terraces set up in front of the magnificent buildings built by Champagne houses over three centuries

but there remain many barriers to doing so
The main objective of the SHIFFT project is to stimulate the adoption of low-carbon heating technologies in existing buildings
It will take multiple routes to achieving this through its three technical work packages
Work Package 1 devises city strategies for four small to medium municipalities as well as producing general guidance for cities to make their own strategies for the move to low carbon heating
City strategies will be devised for the Belgian cities of Brugge and Mechelen
the Dutch city of Middelburg and the French city of Fourmies
each led by the cities as full partners in the project
These will inform a document offering guidance to other cities who want to devise their own strategy
TU Delft is involved in Work Package 1 (both the faculties BK and TBM contribute to it)
Work Package 2 focuses on developing strategies for the fullest possible inclusion of communities in co-developing and co-creating low carbon heating strategies at the local level
This will inform the other Work Packages of SHIFFT
We see it as essential to include communities to the fullest possible extent in decisions about the buildings in which they live
TU Delft is lead partners of Work Package 2 (Faculty of TPM)
TU Delft will use Participative Value Evaluation and several co-creation research methods in this Work Package
Work Package 3 concerns delivery of exemplar community low carbon heating projects; one installation of low carbon heating technology will take place in each of the four INTERREG 2 Seas Member States
with each build led by one of our project partners: Places for People (UK)
Fourmies (FR) and Zorgbedrijf Rivierenland (BE)
We will aim to capture learning from these developments and pass it on to the widest possible selection of stakeholders in the sector
TU Delft is involved in Work Package 3 to design
monitor and assess technical performance of heating technologies implemented in the investment pilots
The work is led by the University of Exeter (UK)
will support the local authorities and other partners as regards technology
policy and co-creation of projects with communities
The specific and measurable objectives of SHIFFT are to assist in the development of city low carbon heating strategies
both within the project and by demonstrating routes to strategy development for other municipalities
to develop exemplar low carbon retrofit heating projects and to work with others to pass on the lesson learned within the project to maximise the value of the lessons learned
SHIFFT targets local and regional authorities as a primary target group with the purpose of influencing communities
energy service companies and SMEs to consider a wider set of heating solutions than is currently the case
