JJJJound returns with a new collaboration
partnering this time with French label Plasticana to revisit the eco-conscious Gardana clog
the Montreal-based studio applies its signature approach here as well
Plasticana originally designed the Gardana clog using recycled hemp-based plastic
The material gives the shoe its soft sepia hue
derived entirely from the sugar content naturally present in hemp
the clog offers a loose fit and a lightweight build
Plasticana markets the design as vegan and fully recyclable
aligning with the brand’s interest in low-impact production
and color of the original clog completely intact
The only visible change arrives in the form of a small JJJJound logo placed on the back heel
It’s a move in line with the studio’s known design restraint
but one that hasn’t landed well with everyone
Social media responded quickly and without restraint
Some followers interpreted the release as an attempt at humor or satire
Reactions ranged from disbelief to skepticism
with many questioning the intent behind the collaboration
Some dismissed the release entirely with short remarks or sarcasm
The backlash reveals a growing expectation among JJJJound’s audience for more thoughtful design input
particularly in a space where limited-edition collaborations usually generate strong demand
JJJJound remains consistent in its design language
The studio has built a following by avoiding over-explained concepts and resisting the pull of trends
offering a pared-down product that puts material and form before decoration or reinterpretation
The original Gardana clog currently retails online for $68 USD
though no official price has been confirmed for the JJJJound version
Fans can expect the shoe to arrive as part of the studio’s Spring Summer 2025 collection in the coming weeks

Issue: Improve the quality of Alteo’s effluents before they are discharged into the sea in Calanques national marine park
bringing the site into line with the strictest standards
Goal: Provide a sustainable solution for a long-standing industrial company in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region
threatened with closure by government order
Veolia’s response: Installation of an on-site biological treatment unit provides a rapid response
allowing Alteo to prove it can use forward-looking solutions to maintain its presence in the region
the ecological balance of waters in the Calanques marine park was threatened by discharges of so-called red sludge
This sludge is bauxite residue from Alteo’s alumina plant in Gardanne and the company has since ceased this practice
After coming under renewed pressure surrounding the quality of its industrial water discharges
which came up with a biological treatment unit that uses bacteria to break down suspended organic matter
The goal was clear: bring the quality of effluent discharges up to standard within a very short timeframe
“We were facing the very real threat of a government order that would have put a complete stop to our activity,” recalls Frédéric Ramé
It was vital to find a specialist water treatment partner able to implement a solution that had never previously been used in this industry.
Anne-Laure Galmel, Project Manager for the Mediterranean region at Veolia France Water, spent months working on a discharge treatment process that would ensure industrial effluents were sufficiently clean and oxygenated to be discharged at all times of year
The treatment unit we designed runs on biomass
This stage is followed by two additional treatments: a physicochemical treatment for decantation and a treatment to remove any matter remaining in suspension on the filters.
Farid Bentoumi's second release after his comedy Good Luck Algeria. The French-Algerian director has made the Official Selection for the first time at Cannes 2020 with his film Rouge (Red Soil)
An environmental thriller inspired by various true stories like that of a production plant in Gardanne that was dumping hazardous waste in the Mediterranean Sea
the film takes inspiration from this "red mud" health scandal and shines a light on the current environmental/economic dilemma
Nour has just been hired as a nurse at the chemical plant where her dad
a worker's union representative and loyal employee
In the midst of the factory's health inspection
a journalist is carrying out an investigation on waste management
These two young women discover little by little that the factory
Rouge (Red Soil) possesses a quality usually seen in American cinema
taking on a political or social issue and embodying these ideas through fiction
With a solid script and masterful direction
it brings up a debate that has been made even more relevant by the COVID crisis: health or work
"the end of the month or the end of the world"
“I don’t have the perfect solution
(…) We have simply opened up a debate that will occupy us for the next twenty or thirty years and that will have a deep impact on our society and way of life.”
By showing the contrast between Nour, who sides with health and the environment, and her father, a union member who fears unemployment more than cancer, Rouge (Red Soil) highlights the complexity of this debate and invites viewers to seriously consider the questions that come up on screen alongside its cast; Zita Hanrot

my editor Yang-Yi Goh reported back: “The Plasticanas are Plasticaning today.”
are a relatively affordable shoe for hanging around
“We’ve got chefs from local restaurants that come in a lot
we’ve got the people who want to go upstate and need something that’s a no-brainer to throw on,” says Salter House co-owner Carson Salter
who first encountered the Plasticana style at the Maison & Objet design trade show in Paris in 2013
where he thought they looked “looked perfectly casual and cool.” This was pre-Salter House
so he didn’t yet have any way of ordering them wholesale
He pitched them to several retailers like Westerlind and Assembly New York but “nobody bit.” Once he and his wife Sandeep opened their own store in 2018
A couple years later, Salter’s old schoolmate from growing up in Atlanta, Emily Adams Bode Aujla
sent the clogs down her Fall 2020 runway show
which put them on the radar of New York’s fashion crowd
in addition to similar Plasticana models: a Wellies-style rainboot
as do a range of e-retailers including Gardenheir and Anthopologie
“Even though I had a lot of trouble getting [the clogs] into shops before we were carrying it
whose business is the largest Plasticana importer in the States
“I want to take a little bit of credit that I think we helped to frame them as something that wasn’t just a pure granola product.”
“Often when you have tourists or people whose parents are [visiting the city] and they see them in the store
or those who are “maybe a little more forward-thinking
Bode sent Plasticanas down the runway in early 2020
The actor Christopher Abbott wore them (with crutches and all) in late 2023
The unisex clogs tick most boxes on the post-pandemic style checklist: practical
But the clogs are polarizing because they’re weird looking
they are made of mottled brown rubber; while the manufacturer does make them in another color
a deep bottle green called “Vert,” Salter says the additional dye makes the material less sustainable and so Salter House chooses not to carry them
“So often with sustainable materials,” he says
“you have some messy evidence of the earth that it came from…whether it’s seeded bread or it’s a flax linen.” As a result
the clogs are a bit inconsistent—the sizing can be wonky
created from the melting of the hemp’s sugar molecules
varies from pair to pair—so they still feel homespun
After they appeared on the Bode runway, GQ’s own commerce writer Gerald Ortiz recommended the Plasticanas back in 2021
once he’d trekked over an hour from Ridgewood
Queens to Brooklyn Heights to purchase a pair at Salter House
The store still had limited sizing and stock back then
“I had seen that they would get a restock and sell out really fast
which made me want them even more,” Ortiz says
He liked the low-cut shape as a sleeker alternative to his Birkenstock Bostons
means he wears his own Gardanas less frequently these days
“I am one of those fickle guys that is like if I see something enough
I will not want to wear it anymore,” he admits
“I still think it’s a really handsome shoe
GQ Recommends soothsayer Gerald Ortiz modeling the Plasticana clogs in 2021
they’ve become a hit among New York’s community of hip chefs
a sous chef at the buzzy Ridgewood restaurant Rolo’s—and
Nestled among the overpopulated shoe rack by our apartment’s front door
I noticed Ghantous owns not one but three pairs of Plasticanas
after enough stray coals from working the kitchen’s wood-fired oven had melted holes through the soles.) Ghantous first saw a stranger wearing them a few years ago
“somewhere around the Bedford L stop on a Saturday morning when
“I liked them so much that I spent probably upwards of three hours on eBay just looking up ‘gardening shoes’ to try to find them.”
For the same reasons they’re practical on a rainy day—nonslip and waterproof—they’re useful for restaurant workers. As of late, most of the back- and front-of-house staff at Rolo’s are decked out in Plasticanas. I’m half-expecting the clogs to show up on Ayo Edebiri’s stylish chef de cuisine character Sydney Adamu in the upcoming third season of The Bear
and Ghantous spotted a couple pairs on a recent trip to London
Wearing a gardening shoe around New York City (or anywhere else not primarily covered in soil) offers a bit of provincial fantasy
even if their waterproofness can come in handy
given how frequently dips in the sidewalks can invite pools of precarious liquids
“Personally, I know that wearing them poses the question of what socks or if socks more than most shoes do,” says Salter, “in the same way that the idea of adding a Birkenstock with socks causes people a total crisis.” For his part, he prefers his Plasticanas with added insoles and nice wool socks.

nonprofit urban farms and volunteer grocery stores help poorer families cope with the cost-of-living crisis
MARSEILLE - On a sunny winter's morning, Etienne Griffaton walked around the Graines De Soleil urban farming project
people have to do a lot of different things," said Griffaton
"But I think people are happy to have their hands in the soil."
Graines De Soleil is part of a network of non-profit organisations fighting food poverty around France's second city, Marseille, where around 26% of the population live below the poverty line compared to the French average of around 14%
Across Graines de Soleil's three hectares (7 acres)
18 employees and around 30 'apprentices' grow fresh produce
which is then sent to grocery co-operatives

an umbrella organisation set up to fight food insecurity
collectives like Territoires à Vivres have developed new ways to provide food while addressing the stigma associated with food banks and what critics describe as a paternalistic attitude towards aid recipients
"With COVID we noticed that the groups working in this field adapted their behaviour ..
in order to provide people with the food they needed," said Aïcha Sif
a city councillor and deputy mayor in charge of urban agriculture and food sustainability
Another saw the development of social groceries like Colibri
Colibri stocks its shelves from urban farms like Graines de Soleil and buys subsidised food from supermarket chains
The staff are all volunteers and each item has two prices
typically people living just above the poverty line
while others pay a full or 'solidarity' price
retirees as well as immigrants without secure status
They are also "often poor workers who are right on the line despite a small salary
with no help from the state," said volunteer Pascale Michel

a new multi-modal transport hub in Gardanne is encouraging users to leave their vehicles behind and use public transport
Catherine Fabre is head of the operational projects department at the Aix-Marseille Métropole
and she told Euronews more about their ambitions for the project
"The decision to build this hub was taken in 2015 to meet future needs related to the modernisation of the Marseille Gardanne Aix railway line
the number of passengers at the Gardanne railway station should have doubled as a result of the modernisation of this line
"This multimodal exchange hub is part of a global transport development plan for the metropolitan area
and there's plans for more hubs like it on the agenda," she added
The Gardanne hub is also committed to being more ecological
The car park located there has been equipped with photovoltaic panels
and also has around twenty spaces for electric vehicles
The trains there also being replaced with less-polluting ones

The City of Gardanne undertook this project to redevelop the abandoned Yvon Morandat mine site under its policy to enhance its heritage from the past with a view to the future
This 14-hectare brownfield site is being redeveloped by the SEMAG (semi-public planning company for Gardanne and its surroundings) to create an economic
cultural and energy hub that aims to become France's first activity cluster earning the Mediterranean Eco-District and Sustainable Neighbourhood label
as an "ecosystem" for innovation and scientific culture committed to a social and solidarity-based economy
were actively involved in developing the network for producing geothermal energy from minewater
to be deployed within the cluster in the first half of 2018
The BRGM conducted a pre-feasibility study to assess opportunities for using rising minewater as a natural and renewable source of geothermal energy
Minewater can be extracted from one of Europe's deepest mine-shafts
the 1100 metre "Y" shaft at the abandoned Yvon Morandat mine
The study first examined opportunities across the entire Gardanne district
before identifying scenarios to match the configuration and requirements of the Yvon Morandat hub
The aim is to meet heating and cooling needs for the future hub via an innovative facility for renewable and recoverable energy (ENR&R) created by converting the infrastructure previously used for fossil fuel extraction
The BRGM also assisted the SEMAG for the selection of an energy company that would become a stakeholder in the SEMAG subsidiary SAS Énergie Solidaire
which was established to become the owner-operator of the energy network
The result will be an innovative and agile energy network based on smart-grid technology with exchanges between buildings on the block-chain principle and power production for own consumption via hybrid solar and battery storage technologies

Legislation approved by Senate will apply to existing and new car parks with space for at least 80 vehicles
All large car parks in France will be covered by solar panels under new legislation approved as part of president Emmanuel Macron’s renewable energy drive
Legislation approved by the French Senate this week requires existing and new car parks with space for at least 80 vehicles to be covered by solar panels
The owners of car parks with between 80 and 400 spaces have five years to comply with the measures
while operators of those with more than 400 will have just three years
At least half of the area of the larger sites must be covered by solar panels
The French government believes the measure could generate up to 11 gigawatts of power
Politicians had originally applied the bill to car parks larger than 2,500 sq metres before deciding to opt for car parking spaces
French politicians are also examining proposals to build large solar farms on empty land by motorways and railways as well as on farmland
The former UK prime minister Liz Truss considered blocking solar farms being built on agricultural land
The sight of parked cars under the shade of solar panels is not unfamiliar in France

Macron has thrown his weight behind nuclear energy over the past year and in September announced plans to boost France’s renewable energy industry
He visited the country’s first offshore windfarm off the port of Saint-Nazaire off the west coast and hopes to speed up the build times of windfarms and solar parks
The move comes as European nations examine their domestic energy supplies in the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
Technical problems and maintenance on the powerhouse French nuclear fleet has exacerbated the problem while the national operator EDF was forced to cut its output in the summer when French rivers became too warm

While the three works that Cézanne exhibited in 1874 at the first Impressionist exhibition were not fully in line with the Impressionist technique of quickly placing appliqués of pigment on the canvas
he did eventually abandon his relatively dark palette in exchange for brilliant tones and began painting out of doors
encouraged by the Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro (1830–1903)
His Bathers (1976.201.12) of 1874–75 demonstrates a developed style and tonal scale in one of his first paintings of this theme
The landscape of Bathers has the brilliance of plein-air painting
drawn from the artist’s imagination (Cézanne rarely painted nudes from life)
The complex process of drawing inspiration from these two sources
The Fisherman (Fantastic Scene) (2001.473)
while its subject recalls the themes of fantasy familiar from the 1860s; it too could be the product of two polar sources
In his still-life paintings from the mid-1870s
Cézanne abandoned his thickly encrusted surfaces and began to address technical problems of form and color by experimenting with subtly gradated tonal variations
or “constructive brushstrokes,” to create dimension in his objects
and Apples of about 1877 (29.100.66) shows Cézanne’s rejection of the intense contrasts of light and shadow of his earlier years in exchange for a refined system of color scales placed next to one another
The light of Impressionism resonates in this work
but signs of a revised palette are especially apparent in his muted tones
Still Life with Apples and a Pot of Primroses (51.112.1)
reveals Cézanne’s artistic evolution and mastery of this style of building forms completely from color and creating scenes with distorted perspectival space
are rendered without use of light or shadow
but through extremely subtle gradations of color
In such still lifes as Dish of Apples (1997.60.1) of about 1876–77
Cézanne ignores the laws of classical perspective
allowing each object to be independent within the space of a picture while the relationship of one object to another takes precedence over traditional single-point perspective
especially Braque’s impressions of L’Estaque of about 1908
Cézanne began a series of five pictures of Provençal peasants playing cards
Widely celebrated as among the finest figure compositions completed by the artist
The Card Players (61.101.1) demonstrates his system of color gradations to build form and create a three-dimensional quality in the figures
Continuing on this theme of the rural laborer
Seated Peasant (1997.60.2) celebrates the dignity of working-class citizens of Third Republic France (1870–1940)
and collectors Henry Osborne Havemeyer (1847–1907) and his wife Louisine Havemeyer (1855–1929)
Posthumous exhibitions at Galerie Bernheim-Jeune and the Salon d’Automne in 1907 in Paris established Cézanne’s artistic legacy

EQTEC PLC (AIM:EQT) said it expects to begin initial front-end engineering design work
for a French waste-to-renewable natural gas (RNG) project in the coming weeks after completing a technical and commercial feasibility study
The feasibility study of the Biogaz Gardanne project, for which the company was awarded €1 million in March
has concluded that to generate sustainable production of RNG and a healthy return on investment
the site would ideally process around 80,000 tonnes per year of Grade B industrial waste wood
using EQTEC’s syngas technology and VESTA methanation technology from John Wood Group PLC
Along with local development consultants S3D Ingénierie
the AIM-listed company said it presented these recommendations last week to the French government
including the cabinet of the minister for energy transition and the General Secretariat for Investment (SGPI)
and receiving assurances of its “strong place” on the energy transition agenda for the region
the group said it filed a request to secure a feed-in tariff for RNG to be injected into the GRTgaz natural gas transmission network
and has begun discussions with a number of French utilities for potential project funding
which will bill roughly €250,000 for engineering services for the pre-FEED work
then anticipates that it will lead the full FEED work that it calculates should be worth at least another €750,000 in fees
most of which will be charged in the first half of next year
said “momentum is growing for the project in terms of solution development
political support and investment attractiveness”
he said the project is also “gaining traction” with private-sector investors looking to invest in clean energy infrastructure that fits well with the direction of French policy
Le Saint added that the RNG tariffs for France are due to be announced soon and he is “confident we will secure a tariff
along with critical permits that move us closer to making Biogaz Gardanne a reality"

is currently managed by the DPSM (the BRGM’s Mine Safety and Risk Prevention department)
The mine galleries became flooded when pumping was partially shut down after mining ceased
forming a large reservoir of water at temperatures of 20 to 30°C depending on depth (up to 1,000 m)
This potential and as yet unused geothermal resource prompted the city of Gardanne
to commission a characterisation study of the reservoir from the BRGM
to use this potential source of very low energy geothermal heat via heat pumps to cover heating and cooling needs in a planned Joint Development Zone (ZAC) above the Yvon Morandat pit in Gardanne
assess its long-term potential to meet needs on the surface and measure the hydraulic
chemical and bacteriological impacts of extraction
the BRGM undertook several types of studies
A conceptual model was developed based on a regional geological model and plans of the main galleries linking pits that are still accessible
and run with parameters from different scenarios
The first scenario tested was for the ZAC project as originally designed (heating and cooling needs)
a data centre was added (substantial cooling needs)
The third scenario added heating for an existing residential sector
The model showed the hydrothermal impacts of the different scenarios and associated technical solutions: cooling needs only
with pumping and reinjection wells or with reversible hot and cold wells
because the water becomes highly mineralised due to sulphur oxidation followed by flooding of the mine workings
the characterisation of the resource also included an assessment of the impact of temperature (storage of calories or frigories) and of potential oxygenation effects on the physico-chemical characteristics of the mine water
3D hydrodynamic model of the flooded mine reservoir
These investigations showed the relevance of scenario n° 1
with alternating heat and cold production according to season via a reversible well (the pumping well becomes an injection well
a solution that limits the thermal impacts of extraction on the resource
This study was able to draw on knowledge acquired during previous work since 2000 with Dutch researchers under the Interreg IIIB project for north-west Europe
and from a pilot site established at Heerlen (Minewater project)
It provided decision-support material and recommendations for the Gardanne municipality on using the mine water for heating and cooling needs
The SEMAG (joint company for Gardanne development) is looking to relaunch the project with further investigations into other solutions (pumping and reinjection in a single well
closed loop geothermal exchanger) and their installation costs
A commercial court in France on Thursday handed control of Alteo
to Guinea-based logistics specialist United Mining Supply (UMS)
UMS was the last remaining candidate to take over Alteo’s production site near the southern city of Marseille
a year after it entered bankruptcy proceedings because of falling orders against the backdrop of a global crisis in the aluminium industry
Alumina is smelted to produce aluminium metal
but is also used as a raw material for ceramics and consumer products such as smartphone screens
The court said UMS’s financial support as a new shareholder in Alteo Holding would allow the plant to free up enough cashflow to carry on
owned by French-Lebanese-Guinean businessman Fadi Wazni
will take on part of Alteo’s debt and phase out the import of bauxite
within 12 to 18 months because of its environmental impact
Alteo imports its bauxite mainly from Guinea
the factory has been stocking bauxite residue outdoors
prompting complaints from local residents about air and water pollution
The company has been accused of dumping polluted production residue
with the cost estimated at up to €30 million
including subcontractors and service providers
making it one of the biggest employers in the Aix-en-Provence region
