Taviel Genas dreamed of one day becoming a paediatrician so that she could help children the vision shifted to nurturing children through knowledge and understanding the educator has found a home in starting her very own 24-hour daycare “I started my journey on my little veranda teaching summer school It was a big accomplishment and from that summer school I was able to save to get a bigger house that could accommodate the start of making a bigger change in my community I am now the proud owner and operator of [a] 24-hour daycare in St Catherine: Nana’s Bananaz 24/7 Daycare,” she told Sunday Lifestyle Now residing in Eltham Park with her family she wanted to create a safe haven for children where their parents know that they are protected and are in an environment that also facilitates learning “Childcare has been my only passion since I was little I studied early childhood education in college after finishing my studies I worked in the classroom as an early childhood teacher and enjoyed every minute of it,” Genas explained The passion remained strong but the compensation proved problematic in making ends meet With the help of God and the support of family she mustered up the courage to put her thoughts of opening a daycare a beautiful reality the teacher and entrepreneur has been grateful for the growth and positive feedback she has received from other parents “My daycare has helped the community especially those young fathers and mothers who have been restricted from taking on work due to the limited daycare hours usually available at other facilities,” she said This venture has seen more than its fair share of challenges along the way “My biggest obstacle right now is getting noticed to move my daycare from the home I am currently in I have also had to deal with the ‘NOs’ when I am seeking help or sponsorship.” It is like therapy; I get to give double the love And being a mother makes my job as a teacher and caregiver way easier.” With hopes of having Nana’s Bananaz in every parish the educator is looking towards sourcing additional supplies for her daycare in the meantime “Some of the supplies we need are furniture as well as books and toys that facilitate learning we are in great need of a building,” she added Here is her advice to those seeking to bring their dreams to fruition “Ensure that you make the first move Never be afraid to ask questions; there are people around you who are willing to give you advice and the right channel to take Information is at your fingertips in this day and age do your research and then get to pursuing it.” krysta.anderson@gleanerjm.com View the discussion thread. chicken teriyaki and a Jamaican buffet in this week’s cheap eats column Three Great Cheap is a weekly series from critic Robert Sietsema that seeks to find and popularize New York City’s most interesting and inexpensive food in the five boroughs and beyond. Here she invites women to feed off their passion and desire to transform their lives and can get whatever they want if they put their minds to it This slightly selfish theme crosses over into the "Marriage manual," where Mama basically tells women that they can train their husbands into becoming their knight that will listen to every desire are the most underused commodities that a woman has Men love love love love to give of themselves to the women in their lives But I suspect that most of you do not know a dot about how to use your husband to serve you." Her poor word choices really rock this book negatively use and train are just three that make me feel like I am being stabbed in the gut each time I see them These words should not be used in regard to marriage -- from either side Gena is convinced that a marriage that you aren't controlling means "Good Wife Syndrome" and servitude on the part of the woman Abandoning one's dreams in deference to one's husband or children That kind of thing." She also states early in the book that you shouldn't have to compromise in your marriage Some of her generalized advice has rings of truth But then she turns it into something horrible by using certain words (my least favorite is "training") suggesting you shamelessly flirt with other men or using sexual pleasure as the end-all-be-all of course Gena couldn't leave out promotion of her School of Womanly Arts and her Sister Goddesses dedicating a chapter to Sister Goddess marriage especially those about to enter marriage or who are having marital problems Find a licensed marriage counselor before trusting in Mama Gena's seemingly free advice For National Badge of Honour recipient Claudette Genas the humanitarian she is today is as a result of the community she has around her and the type of mentorship she received during her upbringing Hailing from the community of Roehampton in St Genas says she had a “supportive community” which would go as far as helping to pack her suitcase when it was time to go off to college “As a result of that kind of communal support the first opportunity I get I would try to replicate that which I saw – the mentorship that was given to us as girls,” she tells JIS News Genas was one of 126 Jamaicans who received national awards from Governor-General She copped the Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service for commendable Community Service through the East Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day Adventists “I didn’t anticipate that I was going to walk up to shake the hand of the Governor- General; I was just helping and helping and helping I am floating in humbleness as a result of the persons who called my name,” she says Genas was taught about service to God and to those around her but after the strong encouragement of her school principal she narrowed her choices to either Social Work or Teaching She will never forget the words of that Principal who said to her: “You’re one of the Prefects here but I notice that when fights take place and you see blood Joseph’s Teachers’ College in Kingston and then the Northern Caribbean University in Manchester and holds a Master of Arts Degree in Education Genas worked in the education sector for about 15 years where she served as Teacher Children and Adolescents Ministries Director at the East Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Genas has received several awards for academic an ‘Impacting Mother Figure’ award from the Live Connections International Outreach Ministries including the Girls of Eloquence Morals and Standards (GEMS) All seven ministries are still active and continue to impact the church and communities they serve she tells JIS News: “You get close to people and you tell them that there’s another way out of that [and] somebody who would have been heading for the gutter is now standing tall balancing self-esteem and extending themselves and achieving and that’s the happiest part of my life – serving others.” Genas says that her greatest ambition is simply “to help as many persons as life lasts” consistent and giving nature and just how passionate she is about the development of young people Allen says that her friend is well-deserving of the national award for her work in community service “I am extremely happy that Jamaica has seen it fit to honour her and to acknowledge her work over all these years in such a special and significant way,” she tells JIS News Send An Email Get the latest news & updates from the JIS sent to your inbox OMAR and Roxanne Genas are a breath of fresh love the two lovebirds have an energetic one-year-old and are elated to have more time together at home as a result of the COVID-19 health crisis We share their wonderful love story and positive perspective in this challenging season He’s a man that stands on principles and follows through on his commitments He loves God and I admire his desire to keep getting closer to God I love that he is completely selfless and committed he showed up to every single doctor’s appointment I had I thought that was normal but when my doctor and I had a little chit-chat she told me that I really have a great husband because he showed up to the appointments and other women would be so happy to have that From day one Omar has been a true gentleman and that has continued to this very day in our marriage and holds my hands when we’re out together we’re still adjusting to life with the addition to our family and with that he has taken on a second job which begins in the night in caring for Jo Almost every night Omar carries out Jo’s bedtime routine and handles the night-time feedings I’m truly blessed to have a partner like him A systems administrator at a major financial institution Omar also gushed about his love for Roxanne Omar: The first thing that attracted me to Roxanne was her intellect We attended college together and I always held the view that if I cannot have a decent non-superficial conversation with a woman then there’s no way I would marry her There was never a superficial moment in our relationship I love her intellect and the fact that we could reason/argue on several controversial topics ranging from religion I highlighted religion first because when we started courting my wife was an active member in the church I remember always asking her tough questions about her God because I could not fathom how an intellectual like her could believe in a God as was portrayed by the church and the Bible Roxanne held her ground and although my points seemed valid to me she refused to capitulate her belief under the strain of my questions She invited me to the religious institution she called church and I reluctantly attended I realised that I was the fool in thinking I knew more about God She was and is as wise as King Solomon because she believes She’s an independent thinker and I will always appreciate that FFM: How has your marriage or family been affected by the COVID-19 crisis Roxanne: Omar would sometimes work from home once per week and I would look forward to that so with this crisis I’m happy he has the ability to work from home Even though he’s working I know for sure that he’s safe and Josiah and I (mostly Josiah) can pop in on him I know for sure that Josiah loves having his daddy home more often — daddy is his playmate because I cannot handle the rough playing that he loves the best part about this crisis for me is the ability it gives me to spend more time with the people I love I love making breakfast for my wife and being present to serve them however I can There’s nothing more important to me than my family and if I could permanently work from home I would be a happy camper FFM: What are you doing to keep your family’s spirits up during this crisis Omar & Roxanne: Our business is centred around plant-based nutritional supplements and environmentally friendly disinfectant cleaners so we are not worried We have been on our vitamins and we also practise proper hygiene and maintain a healthy distance from others At home we go for walks or we have a break for play time with Josiah FFM: Do you have any relational challenges working from home especially with the added responsibility of a baby after all I got married to spend my life and time with my husband So with him not having to commute to and from work five days per week and work 40-50 hours weekly It also eases some of the pressure on me in caring for Josiah When I need to complete a task or need a break to rest The only challenge that we’ve encountered is that because Josiah and I have a routine when he sees daddy that routine gets thrown out the door because he wants to play and be in what daddy is doing That can be distracting especially when Omar has critical and time-sensitive tasks to get done Roxanne alluded to the fact that family is one of our highest values and we got married to spend our life together Too often husbands and wives spend more time at work than they do at home with their family and that in itself could be problematic because an experience is something that cannot be explained fully when a husband has a shared experience with another co-worker and vice versa then terms such as “work husband” and “work wife” start to emerge Being home now affords us to spend more time together Learn more about Omar & Roxanne’s breath of fresh love After having their spectacular gala performance cancelled earlier this year hundreds of young dance students from a western-based dance school are preparing to take to the stage next weekend Gena’s Dance Academy are preparing to take ’GDA On Broadway’ to the Gaiety Theatre stage for three nights next weekend, from Thursday to Saturday, October 29 to 31. More than 250 young performers will showcase their skills and perform a variety of dance styles and routines throughout the show, based around some of the classic Broadway musical productions. Also appearing with the dancers are guest singers David Artus, Alexandra Slater and Alex Maxwell. The dancers are all aged up to 18 years old, with some of the youngest performers being only two and half. The Gena’s Dance Academy grand show is held biannually and was originally intended to be held in May, earlier this year. However, the play was cancelled in the wake of the coronavirus restrictions, leaving the hundreds of young dancers disappointed. Gena Walker, the owner of Gena’s Dance Academy and the organiser of the show, said that they feel relieved and lucky to be able to host their show after all. ’We were affected by lockdown and feel extremely lucky to have been given a second chance,’ said Gena. ’Our show was originally booked for May but obviously got cancelled when lockdown came into place. ’I immediately contacted the Gaiety and they managed to give us the October half terms slot and we just all crossed fingers that it would actually happen. ’It’s been a big challenge with kids fitting into costumes and sourcing materials from the UK that were required for the staging. ’But we have made it work by having an amazing team of teachers, dancers, mums and backstage leaders pulling together and making it happen. ’I’ve also had a baby in June so that’s been challenging as well as I had to return to work to get the show on the road so to speak!’ Tickets for ’GDA On Broadway’ are priced from £18.50 for adults and £17.50 for seniors, with £15.50 for under 16s, available from the Welcome Centre and the Villa gaiety box office, on 600555 and online from villagaiety.com Tel: 01624 695695[email protected]Follow us View the discussion thread. Anyway, did you guys know this was a thing? Last weekend some friends of mine were talking about saying "I love you" for the first time during sex (not before, not after, literally during), and they acted like it was tantamount to treason. The overarching theme was like, "It's just not fair." But guess what? I can think of some worse times and places that, statistically speaking, I'm certain that people have first dropped the L-bomb. And frankly, if you L-bomb them back, you'd say it back, even if it was in... And just for fun, here's a joke about saying "I love you:" Q: What's messy and weird and imperfect? Dude, say "I love you" whenever you want! There are no rules. At least, I don't think so. Unless you actually say the phrase "I love you during sex," which means something else entirely. I think. Do you disagree? Have you ever had a guy say "I love you" during sex?
