France -- Families whose loved ones died in the fiery crash of a supersonic Concorde jet 10 years ago joined together near Paris on Sunday
laying flowers at a monument to the dead and wandering the breezy field where the plane went down
A French court is awaiting a verdict on who was to blame for the accident
which killed 109 aboard the plane and four on the ground
which ferried the rich and famous across the Atlantic for three decades and could fly twice as fast as the speed of sound
witnesses of the crash and Air France officials attended ceremonies Sunday marking 10 years since the plane crashed after takeoff from Charles de Gaulle Airport
plowing into a hotel in the Paris suburb of Gonesse
Air France flew in family members from Germany
and gave them flowers to place at a monument in Gonesse
The Concorde program was operated jointly by Air France and British Airways
One couple clenched hands as they looked at the monument
made of transparent glass with a piece of an airplane wing jutting through it
though officials spoke briefly at the ceremony
relatives of the dead went behind the monument
wandering the field where the plane crashed and where the hotel compound once stood
Claudine Le Gouadec traveled to Gonesse to pay tribute to her sister
chief flight attendant on the doomed plane
"I still have trouble believing that she is gone
Patrick Tesse recalled watching the accident unfold from his hotel nearby
"I was in my office with the windows wide open
The noise of the plane's engine made me look up and when I saw the Concorde
it was moving back and forth violently," he said
a French court held a trial earlier this year in which Houston-based Continental and two of its employees are accused of manslaughter in the crash
The trial focused on investigators' reports that a Continental jet dropped a metal strip onto the runway before the Concorde took off
The prosecution says the debris gashed one of the Concorde's tires
sending pieces of rubber into the fuel tanks and sparking a fire
saying fire broke out on the Concorde before the plane reached the debris on the runway
The prosecution also accuses three French officials of underestimating trouble spots on the Concorde itself
and they are also charged with manslaughter
The trial's main goal is to assign responsibility
as most of the victims' families received settlements years ago
The town of Gonesse organized a separate ceremony Sunday
where some residents expressed their fears that this could happen again
because we are so used to hearing the noise" of airplanes

Fed up with the state of their Parisian suburb
members of a youth charity decided to clean up – and challenge another city
When Hind Ayadi decided to do something about the amount of rubbish in her neighbourhood, kickstarting a national cleaning campaign was not her intention. But “Ma cité va briller” (“My suburb is going to shine”) has become just that: a viral initiative that spread throughout France
founder of youth arts nonprofit Espoir et Création
part of the northern suburbs of Paris and previously famous only for gang violence
Ayadi and other members of Espoir et Création decided to work with local young people to raise awareness of environmental issues and the importance of protecting natural resources – as well as encouraging them to feel proud of their town
Hind managed to inspire around 40 residents between the ages of eight and 25 to volunteer to pick up litter and trash all over the city for almost a week
“Teenagers don’t always feel preoccupied by environmental issues but this time
they wanted to get involved,” Hind explains

Twitter and Instagram to challenge the southern French city of Marseille to make a similar effort
“When I found out about the challenge and our nomination
it was obvious that we had to take over,” says Ismaël Cousin
president of Marseille education nonprofit
Cousin recruited a group of 20 local families who cleaned up the streets of Marseille – before challenging Montpellier
View image in fullscreenThe viral challenge has changed public perception of Garges-lès-Gonesse
Residents throughout the country have been inspired to get cleaning – whether their city has been directly challenged or not
Perpignan and Mantes-la-Jolie embraced the trend last week along with 25 other cities; while others including Argenteuil
Stains and Arras are poised to join the list
But while there is certainly less litter around
not only did challenge participants make sure their city was clean
Garges-lès-Gonesse had a bad reputation; local and national media coverage tended to be limited to reports of violence
a 29-year-old man was severely wounded after being shot three times in the middle of the street
Known for its long-standing neighbourhood gang rivalries and violence
Garges-lès-Gonesse is relishing its new role as the linchpin of a national initiative
the younger ones like to challenge one another on Facebook or Snapchat,” Hind points out
“That’s why I wanted to encourage them to join a cause that would still imply the challenging part but with a positive impact on their neighbourhoods
even those who were part of rival groups.”
The project has become symbolic for the residents
refocusing attention and casting a positive light on their city
instead of shaking their heads at another report of bloodshed
people are congratulating and even emulating them
encouraging people to choose a spot to improve and to share striking before-and-after pictures of their handiwork
Ma cité va briller is proving to have global appeal
decided to roll up their sleeves last Friday – and have subsequently challenged cities in Morocco and Tunisia to do the same
marvels at the scale of the response: “It’s rewarding to see that we’ve reached so many people,” he says
we’re fully committed to keeping our city clean.”
France — With flames and smoke streaking from its engines
an Air France Concorde carrying German tourists to New York for a Caribbean cruise crashed into a hotel outside Paris shortly after takeoff Tuesday
It was the first fatal crash for the needle-nosed supersonic aircraft
All other Concordes — for 30 years the pride of French and British aviation for their luxury
Air France said one of the plane's four engines appeared to have failed
Some witnesses reported that an engine burst into flames even before the plane left the ground
The passengers on flight AF4590 included 96 Germans
The American was a retired Air France employee
Four other people were killed at the small hotel leveled in the crash
A pall of acrid smoke rose from the blackened wreckage and over the wheat fields at Gonesse
a small town near Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport
Firefighters sprayed the rubble with water
and the twisted metal from the plane — which was fully fueled for its trans-Altantic run — was hardly recognizable as a fuselage
French television showed a dramatic photograph of the disabled plane flying low over the airport
flames spewing from the engines on one wing
then banked before slamming into the hotel
"We saw flames shoot up 40 meters (120 feet) and there was a huge boom," said Samir Hossein
a 15-year-old student from Gonesse who was playing tennis
it seems that there was a fire in one or more of the engines on takeoff," Air France President Jean-Cyril Spinetta told reporters at the airport
The crash did not appear to be linked to cracks found recently in both British Airways and Air France Concordes
there are now 12 of the distinctive delta-wing jets in the Air France and British Airways fleets
British Airways canceled its two Tuesday night Concorde flights from London to New York and New York to London
French Transport Minister Jean-Claude Gayssot ordered all Concorde flights suspended for Wednesday
Air France's Spinetta said the day would be used to check the rest of the company's Concordes
the National Transportation Safety Board said it would send an investigator to Paris because the Concorde regularly flies to the United States
The plane that crashed had flown 12,000 hours and had its last mechanical checkup July 21
Police said three people on board the flight were under 18 years old
Prime Minister Lionel Jospin said their condition was "good from a medical standpoint."
Moments after takeoff from Charles de Gaulle at 4:44 p.m
the plane slammed into a parking lot and the hotel
The area is surrounded by farmlands about 9 miles northeast of central Paris
British businessman Darren Atkins told SKY TV news he was aboard another aircraft behind the Concorde on the tarmac
"As it accelerated down the runway the engine was already smoking."
"Before it started to take off the left hand engines were visibly on fire," he said
So much so in fact on the tarmac was some debris that had clearly fallen off the engine," he said
who was at the airport waiting for her children
also said she saw the plane on fire before it lifted off
"We were waiting to hear the explosion because we thought it was going to fall here (at the airport)," Lucas told The Associated Press
was driving along the highway when he saw the plane go down
the whole back end of the plane was on fire," he told The AP
but we didn't hear a noise when it crashed
we stopped right there and called the firefighters."
The passengers had been on a trip meant to savor: champagne on the Concorde
then a leisurely cruise on the MS Deutschland through the Panama Canal to Ecuador
Tour operator Peter Deilmann said the cruise
which had a total of 510 passengers booked
has been considered among the world's safest planes
when a bad landing blew out a plane's tires
It flies above turbulence at nearly 60,000 feet
A round-trip Paris-New York ticket costs $9,000
roughly 25 percent more than first class on a regular jet
Air France officials have said in the past that their current fleet was fit to fly safely until 2007
and French Transport Minister Jean-Claude Gayssot visited the crash scene
President Jacques Chirac promised to pay homage Wednesday to the victims
said Chirac was leaving the airport at the time of the crash
having just returned from the G-8 summit in Japan
including German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and President Clinton
"I wanted to extend the deepest condolences of the American people to the families of those who are lost," Clinton said
an Air France Concorde passenger jet on an international charter flight from Charles de Gaulle Airport
crashed shortly after takeoff into a hotel in nearby Gonesse
All nine crew members and 100 passengers on board
It was the only fatal Concorde accident in its 27-year operational history
The flight was chartered by a German company
Most of the passengers were German tourists heading to New York to board the cruise ship MS Deutschland for a 16-day cruise to Manta
The aircraft made its maiden flight on January 31
It was powered by four Rolls-Royce Olympus 593-610 turbojet engines
each of which was equipped with afterburners
The aircraft’s last scheduled maintenance check took place on July 21
the aircraft had flown 11,989 hours and had made 4,873 take-offs and landings
took off from the same runway at Charles de Gaulle Airport for Newark International Airport and lost a titanium alloy wear strip that was part of the engine cowl
During its take-off run and while the aircraft was doing 185 mph
the Concorde ran over the titanium wear strip
cutting the right front tyre of its left main wheel bogie
launched upwards at an estimated speed of 140 metres per second by the rapidly spinning wheel
violently struck the underside of the left wing
High-speed tyre debris did not directly puncture any of the fuel tanks
but it sent out a pressure shockwave that ruptured the number five fuel tank at its weakest point
Large amounts of fuel leaking from the rupture ignited
causing a loss of thrust in the left-hand-side engines one and two
Leaking fuel gushing out from the bottom of the wing was most likely ignited either by an electric arc in the landing gear bay due to debris cutting the landing gear wire or through contact with hot parts of the engine
Engines one and two surged and lost all power
likely due to ingestion of hot gases in both engines
Engine one slowly recovered over the next few seconds
and the flight engineer shut down engine two in response to a fire warning and the captain’s command
An air traffic controller at Charles de Gaulle Airport noticed the flames before the Concorde was airborne and informed the flight crew
the aircraft had already attained the V1 decision speed
at which point it is considered unsafe to abort
The plane did not gain enough airspeed with the three remaining engines
as damage to the landing-gear-bay door prevented the retraction of the undercarriage
The aircraft was unable to climb or accelerate
and its speed decayed during the course of its brief flight
The fire damaged the inner elevon of the left wing and it began to disintegrate and melted in the extremely high temperatures
Engine number one surged again but did not fully recover
and the right wing lifted due to the asymmetrical thrust
The crew reduced the power on engines three and four in an attempt to level the aircraft
but lost control owing to deceleration and the aircraft stalled
fire damage to the flight controls made it impossible to maintain control
The aircraft’s left wing struck the ground after a heading change of nearly 180 degrees
crashing into the Hôtelissimo Les Relais Bleus Hotel in Gonesse
The official investigation was done by France’s accident investigation bureau
the Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety (BEA)
The accident investigation revealed that the aircraft was over the maximum takeoff weight for existing ambient temperature and other conditions and 810 kg over the maximum structural takeoff weight
Fuel transfer during taxiing left the number five wing tank 94 per cent full
A 12-inch spacer normally keeps the left main landing gear in alignment
but it had not been replaced after recent maintenance
The BEA concluded that this did not contribute to the accident
Playback of the cockpit voice recorder indicated that the crew tried to divert to nearby Paris-Le Bourget Airport
but accident investigators said a safe landing would have been highly unlikely
pending an investigation into the cause of the crash
Commercial service was resumed on November 7
after the implementation of a safety improvement programme
There were several lawsuits and criminal charges filed as a result of the accident
a French appeals court cleared US airline Continental of criminal blame for the July 2000 Concorde jet crash
the court said that Continental might still be liable for damages
as the firm still bore civil responsibility
A monument in honour of the crash victims was set up at Gonesse
It consists of a piece of transparent glass with a piece of an aircraft wing jutting through
a 6,000-square-metre memorial surrounded by a topiary planted in the shape of a Concorde
The accident and subsequent investigation were featured in the seventh episode of the Canadian documentary series Mayday

5 live Daily looks back at an historic moment through the eyes of those who were there.
On 25 July 2000, the supersonic jet crashed just minutes after take-off, killing all 109 people on board and four people on the ground.
The Air France flight, bound for New York, crashed into a Relais Bleu hotel in the town of Gonesse, 10 miles north of Paris. Most passengers on board were German tourists but also two Danes, an Austrian and an American. They had been travelling to JFK airport where many were due to join a cruise ship bound for Ecuador.
Alice was staying at the Relais Blue when the plane smashed into the building.
She remembers hearing a huge explosion and then turning to see the pictures sliding off her bedroom wall: "The flames were coming in through the bathroom. It was at that moment in time my life flashed before my eyes. The window was the only means of escape.”
Alice looked down from the window to see the hotel receptionist and manageress.
She remembers shouting down to them in French to ask what was going on: "They just said to me, ‘Jump. You have to jump. Now!' I can't emphasise enough just how close to death I was.
"It has affected me at a subconscious level. You realise just how fragile life is."
Air investigator Tony Cable was part of the British investigation into the crash, which ran alongside the French investigation.
He told 5 live Daily it was a relatively simple job: "The evidence was laid out on the runway."
Investigations revealed that a piece of debris had punctured a tyre, causing more debris to be flung into the fuel tank and leading to a catastrophic fire.
Tony said it wasn't the first case of tyre rupture on Concorde: "There were features that made it more vulnerable because it has a particularly high take-off speed."
Jock Lowe joined British Airways in 1970 and began flying Concorde six years later.
He retired from flying the jet soon after the crash but said he never had any worries about its safety: "It was a wonderful aeroplane. It had a charisma about it, it was exciting to fly - it was fun."
He says there's no technical reason why a plane like Concorde couldn't take to the skies in future: "If you talk to any pilot they would love to fly it again and have absolute confidence in it."
Following the accident all Concorde planes were taken out of service until November 2001.
The supersonic jet, which once flew from New York to London in two hours, 52 minutes and 59 seconds, was retired from service in 2003 following further safety problems.
In 2006 viewers of the BBC'S Culture Show voted Concorde as Britain's favourite design ahead of the London Underground map, the Mini and the World Wide Web.
ZANU PF MPs Tuesday heckled MDC legislator Innocent Gonese as he tried to raise a formal complaint through the house against an ongoing state crackdown on those accused of taking part in recent anti-government protests which led to the killing of 12 by security forces
Parliament resumed sitting on Tuesday after having closed for the festive season
its first session this year was spoiled by disorderly MPs from the ruling party who interrupted the Mutare Central MP as he tried to take up the matter with parliament
Gonese however ignored the clamour and went on to castigate government for failure to abide by the country’s constitution through unleashing the military to perform policing duties leading to fatalities and injuries
it is very clear that this August House has the responsibility to ensure that the provisions of the constitution are followed
“It is our responsibility as duly elected representatives of the people of Zimbabwe that all institutions and agencies of the state abide by the constitution
“The deployment of the defence forces in the past two weeks is a cause for concern to parliament and the people of this country
“Parliament should have been called to pass a Bill to have the defence forces deployed.”
“The deployment of the defence forces and lack of accountability by government are unconstitutional
“We have noticed selective application of the law in the past week or so as accused persons are not given the right to fair trial.”
Among those whose rights were being violated
Levi Chiminya and Settlement Chikwinya who have been denied bail by the courts
Deputy Speaker Tsitsi Gezi promised to look into the issues raised by Gonese this week
President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government has come under fire for its violent crackdown on protesters who were angered by a rcent hike in fuel prices by more than double
Speaking to journalists during his recent visit to Russia
Mnangagwa defended the military crackdown on civilians
torture and rape have widely been exposed via international media with the country’s leader later saying the abuses were “unacceptable”

Godfrey Gonese whose farm was seized by government in 2014 and given to an Italian citizen
has demanded Lands Minister Perrance Shiri to return the property or get sued
Shiri has up to 14 April this year to comply with the order
according to correspondence between him and Gonese
to return Clifton and Mlanje of Roraima Farms
Gonese is the director of Lowveld Leather Products and also own several properties inside the contested farm which the government grabbed while he was out of the country
Gonese wrote to Shiri demanding the immediate release of his seized farm by 14 April 2020
“May you kindly cancel the 2014 lease your ministry gave F
Marconati over my Clifton and Mlanje of Roraima farms in Marondera and restore my occupation and user rights over the same farms in line with the 24 February
“I am allowing you to do what is administratively expected of you
as the authority responsible for land administration
within 30 days after the date of a court order pertaining to your portfolio
“If you do not act as expected by 14 April
I am afraid you will waste taxpayer’s money unnecessarily paying legal costs for an urgent High Court application I will lodge to compel you to cancel the F
Marconati lease and release my land immediately
“I trust you will act responsibly this time around to stop this senseless 16 year madness and allow empowerment progress to go forward again,” said Gonese
Godfrey Gonese has won a bruising legal tug-of-war involving his farm which was grabbed by an Italian
Francesco Marconati with the Zimbabwean government’s blessings
David Mangota ruled that the farm solely belongs to Gonese adding it was court’s finding that the farm was never sold to Marconati at any time
Marconati was running Lowveld Leather Products (Private) Limited at the farms and the company was cited as the first respondent while Lands minister
“Judgement is hereby entered in favour of the applicant as against the respondents in the following terms
an order declaring that there was never any sale of certain two pieces of land situated in the district of Marandellas called Mlanje of Roraima and Clifton Roraima
order declaring two pieces of land in mentioned above solely belonging to the applicant and costs of suit on a legal client scale
Gonese fingered the lands ministry in a questionable acquisition of his farms
arguing he was cheated out of his property while he was living outside the country
The farms and everything in it including schools
the leather factory and other things according to Gonese
Gonese said his company had entered into an agreement of lease with Marconati of a Leather factory and the lease agreement was valid for only two years commencing 2003 and ending 2005
Lowveld Leather Products has been operational since then and used to be very productive until 2005 when its two farms were compulsorily acquired by the government through the Lands ministry
He said Lowveld Leather Products borrowed US$200 000 from the International Financial Corporation (IFC) and upon defaulting payment on or around 2002
the instituted proceedings against Lowveld Leather for recovery of monies under case cover HC 1130/02
that was the time he decided to rope in Marconati so that he clears the debt
He said in a bid to avoid sale in execution of its attached movable goods
he then negotiated with the judgement creditor International Finance Corporation (IFC) to stay execution of its property
the parties reached an agreement and execution was successfully stayed pending certain arrangements
his property has since been unlawfully acquired by the ministry of lands under unclear circumstances and leased to Marconati
Gonese argued that the property was still registered in his name showing that it was never sold to anyone but leased for two years as collateral
It was his successful submission that Marconati only came in to settle his debt and it is for the same reason why the Deed of Transfer remained in his name
Marconati went behind his back claiming he bought the said farms from him
he was then stopped from either visiting the farm of passing by
“I would be arrested and I believe there was an illegal attempt to deprive me of my right over the said properties in favour of Marconati,” he said
“I strongly believe there was a ploy by the law enforcement agents together with the ministry of lands to deprive the applicant of its rights and title over the said properties and thus this matter needs ventilation by this honourable court.”
The farmer went on to complain that the Lands ministry adopted a most arrogant posture on the determination of ownership dispute

It is instructive to note that the Notice was initially given on Wednesday the 17th August after the Administration of Parliament had been given advance notice in terms of practice directions which have been observed in Parliament but which are not explicitly provided for in terms of the Standing Rules and Orders of Parliament. Notwithstanding this procedural compliance
the Speaker of the National Assembly delayed the introduction of the Motion on the pretext that he wanted to be furnished with the video footage and electronic evidence of the police brutality which was the subject matter of the motion
It is instructive to note that the provisions of Standing Order NO
59 do not entail the production of such detailed evidence as it would simply suffice for the Speaker to merely exercise his mind as to whether the Motion is one which is contemplated by the Rules
In spite of the clear and unambiguous nature of the Motion to which in legal parlance the res ipsa loquitor principle would apply
the Motion had to be deferred to the next day
the police had again on that morning proceeded to violate the rights of peace loving Zimbabweans who had simply exercised their rights to demonstrate in terms of the provision of Section 59 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe
in order to debate the motion Honourable Francis Mukwangwariwa began mobilising Members of Parliament to leave the House in a brazen and undisguised manner and Honourable Chamisa rose to point this out
Predictably as soon as Honourable Chamisa started presenting his motion by playing the graphic videos in Parliament
Honourable Joseph Tshuma rose on a point of order to raise the issue of lack of quorum
This was a clearly premeditated and pre- planned manoeuvre
only MDC T Members were present and the inquorate House had to adjourn to the next sitting day
which happened to be a Friday when the House does not normally sit
Oblivious and ignorant of the consequences of their actions
only 6 ZANU PF members of Parliament out of a potential total of 211 were initially present and needless to say no Ministers or Deputy Ministers turned up even though on a Friday the order of business should start with question time
The end result was that no business could be transacted and the House had to adjourn to the 23nd August since there was no quorum and the ZANU PF Members present had risen to 8
Honourable Chamisa again presented his motion but in a predetermined move
the Speaker warned that this would be the last chance. Again the MDC T mustered the required numbers in support of the motion and in a repeat performance
no ZANU PF MP saw it fit to support the discussion of this critical and crucial motion
This time they did not even allow the House to sit up to the appointed time for the adjournment of the House to debate the motion but instead began to move out of the House before 5pm and thereafter the issue of quorum was raised and the bells were rung and the House again had to adjourn to Wednesday the 23rd August 2016
What is disturbing and disgusting is that this was not the first time it had happened because similar tactics were used to kill debate and discussion on the disappearance of Itai Dzamara in March 2016 and also on the motion to discuss the appalling behaviour of Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko who in addition to overstaying his welcome at Rainbow Towers Hotel had also gone to a police station to unprocedurally secure the release of his “boys†from ZINARA who had been arrested
It is regrettable that the August House has failed to discuss the definite matters of urgent public importance and history will judge the anti- people behaviour exhibited by ZANU PF Members of Parliament. One does not need a degree in nuclear physics in order to figure out why they are behaving in this manner. They definitely have something to hide
The motion by Honourable Chamisa is clearly targeted at what are believed to be rogue elements in the Police “Serviceâ€
but the reaction of ZANU PF leads to the inescapable conclusion that the behaviour of the police has been sanctioned at the highest level
the MDC T Caucus will not be deterred and we shall continue to champion the rights of the people who elected us to represent them as opposed to those who rigged their way into Parliament
