Find out how to watch the Canadian star in Miami
and Zharnel Hughes all set to line up against de Grasse
The 100m is set for Saturday (3 May) at 18:53 local Miami time (EDT)
with the same field of men lining up for the 200m on Sunday (4 May) at 17:21
De Grasse has raced twice this year, at the indoor Astana Meet in January as well as at the Florida Relays last month, which was his outdoor season opener.
There, the Tokyo 2020 champion won a 200m "Olympic Development" race with a time of 20.32 into a headwind, before helping Canada beat a U.S. team including training mate Knighton in the men's 4x100m relay.
Rounding out the men's "short sprints" field in Miami are Ackeem Blake, Jerome Blake, and Benjamin Richardson.
Miami is the second of four stops in the first season of Grand Slam Track, which is the brainchild of Olympic champion and athletics great Michael Johnson.

Chas Billingsley of Lake Clear pulls his Grasse River Boatworks canoe upstream during the Little River Ramble on Sunday
CANTON — The story of Grasse River Boatworks begins with an older brother
“He needed a partner before the Canton race
And here we are,” John said one recent afternoon
sitting in a crowded temperature-controlled room (84°F) mostly filled with a mold in which a carbon fiber canoe was curing
In a weathered barn nestled on a generations-old family farm near Canton
the Newman brothers have quietly transformed a lifelong passion for paddling into a precision craft
hand-building sought-after racing and touring canoes
Using cutting-edge carbon fiber technology and techniques honed over five decades
the brothers produce between 25 and 30 custom canoes annually in an unassuming workshop
Each canoe is carefully crafted from raw materials into a finished product that often commands a six-month waiting list
The story of Newman Canoes is deeply intertwined with the family’s heritage
the land sustained them through agriculture
Gene and John Newman became serious about racing and found themselves increasingly frustrated by the lack of competitive tandem racing canoes available on the market
you couldn’t really buy a production tandem racing canoe
and it was all tandem racing at that point
you either had to build it yourself or buy it from somebody who had built it.”
Armed with plans from the Minnesota Canoe Association
the brothers embarked on their first build after recognizing the limitations of existing designs
where they initially competed in the recreational class
The allure of professional prize money soon propelled them into the higher ranks
they were building and racing in the professional class
Their early creations were wood strip canoes
But the brothers were always looking for an edge
This pursuit of innovation led them to embrace the then-nascent technology of carbon fiber
In 1988 or 1989 (the exact date is lost to time)
a bold move that positioned them at the forefront of canoe construction
their first carbon fiber composite canoe made its debut at the USCA Nationals
The manufacturing process at Grass River Boatworks remains a hands-on affair
Each canoe begins with meticulous design and prototype development
The brothers utilize advanced carbon fiber construction techniques
carefully layering the material to achieve optimal strength and weight
“Once the mold is all prepped and ready to go
we come in and lay in a full layer of carbon fiber,” Gene said
“We wet that out with epoxy that sits overnight
then the next day we put in a second layer
which is just a backer layer of a different material
It’s a composite combining two or more different materials to come up with a final product with materials that complement each other
so that the final product is much stronger
much stiffer and lighter than any of the individual materials on their own.”
Customers have a wide array of custom outfitting options
ensuring each boat is tailored to their specific needs and preferences
whether for competitive racing or leisurely touring on the region’s pristine waterways
Newman Canoes has primarily relied on word-of-mouth marketing within the close-knit canoe racing community
Their presence at races and the performance of their boats have spoken volumes
This organic growth has cultivated a loyal customer base
resulting in a consistent waiting list for their custom creations
The Newmans list 20 boats on the model list
six touring boats and four professional-level racing boats
The price list ranges from approximately $2,000 to $6,000
The development of the Newman Pro C-1 is described on the Grasse River Boatworks web page: “ The Newman Pro C-1 is the result of five years’ development following these concepts
After six prototypes and hundreds of hours of on-water testing
the result is a competition canoe that is faster
smoother handling and more efficient to paddle
in addition to being more economical to build and own
The efficiency and simplicity of the design reduces production costs for a most affordable
light and tough carbon-fiber boat that demonstrates unmatched speed and handling.”
a new chapter is unfolding for the family business
is purchasing the company and will move the canoe production side to Wilmington
After a career as a children’s book author and illustrator
a long-time recreational paddler who rediscovered his passion while paddling with his young children
is eager to keep the business moving forward
Eaton’s journey into the GRB business began with a personal need for a solo boat
and ultimately purchased a classic stock C1 racing model
Eaton is currently building a new shop in nearby Wilmington
navigating the permitting process to have the commercial building operational by early summer
with Eaton eventually assuming control of canoe production
Gene and John will continue their expertise in crafting paddles at the original farm location
will continue to handle repairs and refinishing work
is that they really make every single bit of this boat
resin and aluminum tubes that come in here
It isn’t like we get our seats from that guy or this company
Everything is made here; it’s really incredible.”
Visitors to the upcoming Canton Canoe Weekend are sure to find plenty of GRB canoes in nearly every division of the race
The weathered barn on the family farm may soon have a new counterpart
the dedication to quality and the meticulous hand-building process that define GRB Canoes will undoubtedly remain the same

Grand Slam Track has announced its first set of Challengers ahead of its second stop in Miami from May 2nd to May 4th
Here’s a few of the big new names who will be competing at the Ansin Sports Complex:
Personal bests: 1:43.11A for 800m; 3:28.28 for 1500m
we saw the 1500m specialists’ weaknesses exposed over 800m
which allowed Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Marco Arop to go 1-2 in the overall standings
the Olympic bronze medalist at 1500m and American record holder in the mile
was the top 1500m guy in the Slam but only finished sixth in the 800m
Cheruiyot has a much better resume over 800m to be able to fare better in the standings
He was third in the Kenyan National Championships last year in the 800m and only lost to a pair of guys who have run 1:44.84 or faster
this group will race the 1500m on Day 1 and then come back for the 800m on Day 2
Personal bests: 50.82 for 400m; 54.42 for 400m hurdles
Two events over two days for Anna Hall sounds like a breeze when she’s used to competing in seven events over two days
This will be her first 400m and 400m hurdles races since June 2023 since neither event is part of the heptathlon and she was on the road back from a January knee surgery in 2024
She could be very well-suited for this double
Personal bests: 22.60 for 200m; 49.29 for 400m
British sprinter Amber Anning is coming off earning her first global championship individual medal with gold from a tight battle with Alexis Holmes at the World Indoor Championships
also reigniting an old SEC rivalry between the Arkansas and Kansas alumnae
Anning may be due for a 200m personal best in the right conditions since her indoor PB of 22.60 is now faster than her outdoor 22.66 from last May
Personal bests: 9.89 for 100m; 19.62 for 200m
Andre De Grasse and Usain Bolt could’ve been the marquee Racers in this event group
He’s one of the most decorated short sprinters and a certified clutch performer
winning seven Olympic medals over the last three Games
he only reached the semifinals of both the 100m and 200m in Paris
and he’s often a slow starter to the season who rounds into form by mid-summer
De Grasse opened up at the Florida Relays with a 20.32 win in the 200m
Personal bests: 12.20 for 100H; 11.24 for 100m
Despite missing the team at least year’s Olympic Trials
Keni Harrison remains one of the most decorated 100m hurdlers of all time
Harrison made a coaching switch this past offseason and moved on from working with Bobby Kersee in Los Angeles to joining the ALTIS group in Arizona
The signs that Grand Slam Track had caught her attention were there
as she opened up her season with a flat 100m on March 20th
She ran 11.27 to tie her personal best and then came back in the final to lower it to 11.24
It’s hard to determine how that measures up to the field in Kingston because of how windy it was
but she’ll be well-prepared for both events
Claudia Hollingsworth | Women’s Short Distance
Personal bests: 1:58.40 for 800m; 4:02.96 for 1500m
Australia will double its Grand Slam Track presence in Miami as Claudia Hollingsworth joins Olympic silver medalist Jess Hull in the women’s short-distance group
reached the semifinals at the Paris Olympics and then took silver in the World U20 Championships in Peru last summer
She had a good start to the 2025 outdoor campaign with a 1:59.30 for 800m and 4:05.97 for 1500m last month
the youngster doesn’t have much of a head-to-head history with Hull or any of the other Racers
the women’s short distance group will race the 1500m first on Day 2 and then the 800m on Day 3
Tickets are available for the Miami Slam here

On the cusp of leaving high school with his early dreams of being an NBA basketball player scuppered - not so much due to a lack of talent, but an unwillingness to realise that talent alone can’t carry you to the highest levels of sport - the teenager was “riding the city bus with a stack of resumes” contemplating his next uncertain steps in life and the prospect of getting a 'normal' job.
By some twist of fate - or destiny - a friend hopped on the bus and started telling him about a track meet in which he was about to compete. After a playful back and forth between the two, in which De Grasse told his friend that he could beat him in a race, his friend challenged him to come along and compete.
Partly because he wanted an excuse to skip school and partly because he was hoping for a “chill day with my friends”, De Grasse turned up to the York District Regional Championships in Toronto, kitted out in basketball shorts and borrowed spikes.
As he stood on the line, De Grasse had no idea about how to run a 100m race.
As everyone else settled into the starting blocks, he “crouched sideways” like a baseball player, standing out like a sore thumb from every well-drilled young athlete beside him.
And when the starter’s pistol fired, he just ran, as fast as his legs would take him, with no inkling that this could mark the beginning of a career that would eventually carry him to the upper echelons of his sport - even to the title of Olympic 200m champion.
At that moment, De Grasse just wanted to run fast, he wanted to win. And that was enough to ignite the first spark inside him.
Not long after, he learned to use those starting blocks - and to power out of them to devastating effect. But in a way, the story acts as a good metaphor for his book - a series of starting blocks that people can use to unleash their own potential, no matter which walk of life they choose to travel.
ExclusiveMedal Moment | Tokyo 2020: Athletics Men's 200m - A de Grasse (CAN)A truly medal-worthy performance from A de Grasse. Take a look at one of their greatest moments!
De Grasse’s book is not a memoir - he is, after all, an athlete in the prime of his career with goals and dreams still ahead of him. But there are lessons to be taken throughout the pages, from the life of an “accidental sprinter” who stumbled upon a sport in which he went on to excel.
“We’ve got to make this book a lesson about people trying to fulfil their full potential,” he told Olympics.com, looking back on the conversations he had when it came to deciding the title of the book. “I think that’s what my story is because I came into track & field so late and it wasn’t really something that was on my mind.”
De Grasse had obvious natural talent - that first starting-block-less race was run in an impressive 10.97 seconds - but talent alone could not make him into the athlete he is today. Beginning his athletics journey on the back foot (most of the athletes he raced against had track careers spanning years by the time he first laced up a pair of spikes), De Grasse was determined not to give up on his second chance at a life in sport.
Basketball, his first love, was over as a career option, but could he reach his potential in the world of track?
To do so he would need the “work ethic and determination”, but there is also something less easy to conjure in yourself that is behind De Grasse’s success.
“You know, I had all the drive in the world to do what I wanted to do,” he explained. “But I also needed the tools to get that done.
"That’s what the book shows if you read it... some of the tools that I’ve used throughout my career on and off the track, and that’s what’s gotten me to this level, of being one of the best in the world.”

while the lows have seen him contemplate giving up the sport after struggling with injuries
the athlete has learned more than many the balance in mindset needed to have a long and fruitful career in track
Nobody lands on top of the podium at every championship
Nobody goes through an athletics career without battling doubt or facing the challenges of injury
You only need to go back to last year to see how De Grasse has learned to bounce back from lows to
in which he finished sixth in the 200m final at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August
De Grasse returned a month later in the most impressive manner
and the first from Canada to achieve the feat since 2011
I have to have that self-belief,” De Grasse said of the mental fortitude it takes to perform when others are writing you off
“Sometimes fear and anxiety can take over an athlete
is this something I can still do at a higher level?’ You have those thoughts and those doubts but you kind of have to push those to the side…
the techniques of what I learned along the way
to say: ‘These are some of the things I try to do
“You have to make adjustments along the way and you have to adjust your sail every time.”

There’s a chapter in De Grasse’s book titled “Speak It Into Existence” where he writes about his first year chasing his track dreams at college in Kansas when he remembered a phrase his friend used to say to him: “Speak it into existence”
many athletes talk about manifesting their success on track but De Grasse has been a proponent of its value since he first wrote down his goals in his sport when at college
While history shows us that De Grasse has completed most
the mantra of “Speak it into existence” is one he still holds dear to this day - even if he doesn’t always put it into practice
because when I’m going through a rough time
‘I have to go back to some of the tools that I’ve used in previous years or in the beginning’
Let’s go back to how I was able to accomplish so much and win all these medals and I say
De Grasse’s goals may now be different to those he first etched down at the start of his career
And while those initial targets were large enough dreams that only few humans could ever achieve them
his goals these days aren’t always so grand
“I always tell people that you have to complete the small goals first
and if you complete the small goals and tick that box then you get to the big goal
third base… you can’t just hit a home run every time.”

De Grasse is clear about the most important thing in his life
world gold and Olympic silver medallist Nia Ali
I realised how much sacrifice my mom made for me when I was growing up and I just wanted to be the same for my kids
But even though his family are the main source of joy in his life
they have also become an inspiration to him as he continues to work towards his goals on the track
“That kind of changed me a lot when I had my first child
Even though it was a pivotal time in my career when I was having injuries and I was down and I wanted to quit
I knew just having my daughter was going to change everything around me
a charitable body that is “committed to inspiring and empowering youth through access to sport
I was trying to go to a track meet back in 2013 at the Pan American Games
we were going to Colombia at the time - and going to Colombia from Toronto is very expensive
but you have to come up with your transportation
De Grasse’s coach managed to get a sponsor that allowed the young athlete to go to those Pan American Championships
where he won gold in both the 100m and 200m
where a lack of funds would mean a lost opportunity to represent your country on the international stage and missing out on all the opportunities that went along with it
inspired him to launch a foundation that gave opportunities to kids
The Andre de Grasse Family Foundation continues its work in the community and has even obtained a grant from P&G and the International Olympic Committee to support it in reaching its goals
something of which De Grasse says: “With their support
we’re able to use those funds and support these up-and-coming high school (athletes)
so that’s amazing because now we can help them be the best version of themselves.”
And while the foundation works to ignite potential in the grassroots of sport
it is also showing real signs of helping the beneficiaries flower at the highest levels - something De Grasse is clearly proud of
I think he’s gonna be the next big thing,” he said
he just broke the 400m indoor world record* back in the NCAAs
so you’re just finding a lot of talent from this… My goal is not just for them to be better athletes
but for them to get an education out of this and be better people.”

France -- Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse said Wednesday night he'll have to "reevaluate" his coaching situation after the Olympics following the removal of his American coach
Reider's credentials were revoked after the Canadian Olympic Committee said Monday that new information had come to light in the wake of an investigation into allegations Reider had committed sexual misconduct
it's kind of crazy," De Grasse told reporters Wednesday when asked about the situation
I kind of just have to reevaluate after the Games
and keep my head and try to support the guys."
who won a gold medal in the 200 meters at the Tokyo Games
is one of two Olympic champions Reider had been coaching
who claimed gold in the 100 meters at that same Olympics
Reider was investigated for alleged sexual misconduct by the U.S
Center for SafeSport and placed on a one-year probation that ended in May
He was accredited for the Summer Games through the Canadian Olympic Committee for his personal work with De Grasse
"The decision to provide him with that access was based on the understanding that his probation with the U.S
Center for SafeSport ended in May this year
that he had no other suspensions or sanctions
and otherwise met our eligibility requirements," the Canadian Olympic Committee said earlier this week
we learned of new information about the appropriateness of Mr
Reider remaining accredited by Team Canada at the Paris 2024 Games
Reider's accreditation be revoked," the Canadian Olympic body added
The Times of London reported Sunday about a lawsuit filed in Florida by athletes accusing Reider of misconduct
told The Guardian that Reider has no current sanctions against him and the complaints in the lawsuit were malicious
De Grasse failed to advance out of the 200-meter semifinal round Wednesday night
It means he won't have the opportunity to defend his Olympic gold in Thursday's final
"I tried to keep my head and stay mentally strong," De Grasse said
who kind of leads you through these Games and been with all year."
When the initial investigation ensued and Reider was ultimately placed on probation
"It was just a confidence booster that I had with him," De Grasse said
I won a lot of world championship medals with him
So I kind of went back thinking he can get me back to where I need to be
So kind of just sprung onto me the same time you guys knew
So of course that's a tough one to swallow
to just know about that right before you run
De Grasse finished third in his semifinal Wednesday with a time of 20.41 seconds
He said just after his opening-round 200-meter heat Monday that he realized he reaggravated a hamstring injury from last month
"I thought it was just a little bit of soreness
and then later that day I got an ultrasound
"So I said I could go: 'Give me some meds for the pain.' So I just tried to come out here [Wednesday] and see what I could do
it was going to be really tough to try to come away with a fast time."
Although De Grasse ran a season-best 9.98 seconds in Sunday's 100-meter semifinal, it wasn't enough to advance into the electrifying final round that was won by American Noah Lyles

American Tamari Davis won the women's 100m in 11 seconds flat
Reigning Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico won the women's 100m hurdles in 12.47, having just claimed victory at the FBK Games on Sunday (7 July) in the Netherlands.
Steven Gardiner, another reigning Olympic champ, captured the men's 400m. The Bahamian clocked a 44.50 for an easy win.
In the throws, world champion Ethan Katzberg of Canada won the men's hammer throw with a 81.87m (286 feet, 6 inches), while world record holder Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania won the men's discus with a 70.20m (230 feet, 3 inches).

De Grasse didn’t beat Bolt at the Rio Games in 2016
But he made a name for himself when he had the audacity to push the Jamaican to the line in the 200-meter semifinal
a move that forced Bolt to crank back up after he’d started slowing down
then left the Jamaican great wagging his finger at De Grasse when they crossed
Andre De Grasse manages to stay under the radar most of the time
but has a knack for turning up big when the Olympics roll around
is going to put a stop to Noah Lyles and what
feels like the American’s singlehanded quest to make athletics great again
it could very well be this 29-year-old Canadian
He is the defending champion at 200 meters and considers himself still very much a factor in the 100 and 200
both of which Lyles came into the summer as the favorite
“I feel like I’ve always had a chip on my shoulder
even when I got into the sport,” said De Grasse
who is competing at Canada’s Olympic trials starting Friday
no one really thought that I could really do anything because we had Usain Bolt around.”
The move forced Bolt to crank back up after he’d started slowing down
De Grasse conceded it was strategy — trying to wear out the GOAT in hopes of beating him the next night
And even though injuries took De Grasse off the radar for a while
he was back five years later in Tokyo and became an Olympic champion
“Definitely worth the wait,” he said that night

De Grasse sounded confident he will be appearing in both sprints

deftly weaving in a plug for his sponsor Ivisalign
“It’s kind of good to be back at the top now
And now I just really want to defend my title.”

SHEBOYGAN – Back in the late 1800s to early 1900s
it was a common sight to see a horse-drawn wagon loaded with containers of milk to be distributed to customers in the city
Customers could hear the creak of the wagon and the clip-clop of the horses' hooves as the milkman traveled down the street
Barney Grasse started a produce business around 1896 under the name Barney Grasse Produce Company. Ten years later, he branched out into milk distribution and renamed his company Grasse Milk and Produce Company, according to a Sheboygan Press clipping provided by the Sheboygan County Historical Research Center
an entrepreneur like Grasse would find ways to make extra income
the Press reported he purchased a pair of horses in Bloomington
one was called a driver and the other was called a saddle horse
He was likely always looking for a way to make some extra cash back during the early days of his business
Kohler golf course latest: Residents living near proposed Kohler golf course site sue city over permit extension
He then sold one of the horses to a Henry Casper of Elkhart Lake
That horse was described as a fine Belgium horse
The other horse was sold to William Urban in the town of Rhine for $200
he took delivery of a drove of Dakota ponies
There was no mention in the story of what was to be done with the animals
but apparently it caused a stir in Sheboygan
Grasse sold milk to customers on his route from a bulk container using a pint or quart ladle
Delivering milk would seem to be a fairly routine and drama-free business
but it pours," said Barney Grasse when his company's drivers had three separate accidents in one morning in March 1921
a wheel fell off one of the wagons at 16th and Indiana without injury
thanks to a gentle horse driven by Roland Mertens
a wagon had an axle break while being driven by Edward Ver Straate
while Ver Straate transferred milk onto a replacement wagon
the horse was stopped before getting away and no damage was done
COVID stories: Sheboygan, tell us your COVID story as we near the 5-year anniversary
Another bit of drama that Grasse was involved in was for paying top prices for milk from farmers
Grasse claimed he was paying 60 cents above the average price paid for by three cheese factories
Grasse also expanded to sell ice cream for a time. He eventually sold that portion of his business to the Benefeldt Ice Cream Company in July 1924
he would sell his milk distributing part of his business to the Sheboygan Dairy Products Company and the Sheboygan Falls Creamery
Barney Grasse would retire from the business after selling his companies and would later die on June 9, 1934

SAINT-DENIS, France — Canadian sprinter and defending Olympic champion in the 200, Andre De Grasse, attempted to defend his title Wednesday while his coach Rana Reider is embroiled in controversy
De Grasse finished third in the first heat of the men’s 200 semifinal and failed to qualify for the final at the 2024 Paris Olympics
De Grasse said he ran with a painful and inflamed hamstring after an ultrasound earlier this week showed he aggravated an old injury
When asked directly if the allegations of abuse levied against his coach also were a distraction
“I try to keep my head and stay mentally strong
It’s always tough not having your coach out there with you,” De Grasse told reporters
The Canadian Olympic Committee revoked the accreditation of Reider
for the Olympic team amid recent allegations of sexual and emotional abuse
Reider also coaches Italian Olympian Marcell Jacobs and American Trayvon Bromell
Three lawsuits have been filed in Broward County
Florida against Reider and the track club he runs
which are among a list of other defendants
lists the plaintiff as Jane Doe and includes an allegation of rape
The other two cases were filed in June by a 35-year-old retired long jumper from Great Britain and a 28-year-old American sprinter
who allege Reider sexually harassed them by grabbing their buttocks or making suggestive comments about their appearances
USA TODAY Sports does not identify individuals who allege sexual abuse without their permission
Court documents list AXS Law Group as attorneys of record for Reider in one of the three Florida lawsuits
and the attorneys did not immediately reply to a request for comment
The attorney representing Reider on his accreditation revocation
published a statement decrying a lack of due process and the absence of formal investigatory findings to support the Canadian Olympic Committee's action
"It's a bad day for the Olympics when a governing body's fear of bad publicity is prioritized over the athletes," Stevens said
De Grasse said he knew nothing about the allegations until he was informed this week
It kind of just sprung on me the same time you guys knew,” De Grasse said to reporters
To know about that right before you’re about to run
De Grasse said while he’s had success on the track with Reider
he’s going to “reevaluate” his personal coaching situation after the Olympics
He's been my coach for the past three years
I won a lot of world championship medals and Olympic medals,” De Grasse said
I kind of just have to reevaluate after the games.”

The 31-year-old from Markham, Ont., will face tough competition from Tebogo as well as South Africa’s 400m world record holder, Wayde van Niekerk
De Grasse will focus on achieving the 2025 World Championships entry standard of 20.16 seconds for the 200m
While he has already qualified for the men’s 100m event at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September
he has yet to meet the qualification mark for the 200m
De Grasse has raced only once—a 60m indoor event in Kazakhstan in January
where he recorded a time of 6.74 seconds in both the heats and the final
The seven-time Olympic medallist capped off his 2024 season on a high note
anchoring Canada to victory in the men’s 4x100m relay
This marked the country’s first Olympic gold in the relay since the 1996 Atlanta Games
Tebogo enters the Botswana Grand Prix in fine form
having clocked an impressive 45.29 seconds in the 400m at the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne last week
this will be Tebogo’s first 200m race of the 2025 season
