BEMIDJI — Business was a family affair for the late Bob Lowth
whether it was his own kin or his employees
Sixty years after he bought the Ford dealership in Bemidji
two of Bob’s sons are keeping that tradition going
Jim and Todd Lowth will celebrate the dealership’s 60-year anniversary next week with their 34 co-workers
“I would come up to visit with him and I’d want to talk about business
but he would always kind of wave me off and say
‘How’s your family?’ He was more interested in you personally than whether you sold a car that day
Bob and Harvey Groslie came to Bemidji in 1964 from the Fargo-Moorhead area and purchased the Bemidji Motors Ford dealership from Herb and Jim Conner
Groslie-Lowth Ford was located at 315 Third St
NW (now a parking lot next to Northern Surplus)
In 1968 it became Bob Lowth Ford when Groslie opened his own used car lot
Since there was only room for a few vehicles at the downtown location
most of the inventory was kept north of town at 3010 Bemidji Ave
That’s where the dealership moved in 1974 when a new building was constructed
Bob Lowth had worked in the business office at a Chevrolet dealership in Moorhead and was always most comfortable with accounting duties from his upstairs office
“I don’t remember more than four or five times that Dad’s office door was ever shut,” Jim Lowth said
“If somebody came up the stairs and wanted to talk to Dad
whether they wanted to tell him somebody did a great job
Bob Lowth worked until his death in 2008 at the age of 81
Jim and Todd both started in the business as teenagers
while Todd polished chrome bumpers and helped out in the body shop
is the dealer principal and president of GJT Inc.
is the dealership's head of customer relations and secretary-treasurer of GJT
Jim moved into sales when he was 20 years old
“I’ve still got a few customers who won’t start with anybody else
You need to spend a little bit of time getting to know the customer
Then you find out if their wants meet their needs
“We used to have an up system,” Todd recalled
“When somebody came on the lot they would call them an ‘up.’” The sales staff would take turns working with those customers
but “I was so shy that when it was my turn to have an ‘up’ I’d have to go to the bathroom,” he said
I got over it after many years of meeting fine people.”
While Jim and Todd both consider themselves semi-retired
they know the dealership is in good hands with Moudry at the helm
“We’re very fortunate to have many long-term employees,” Todd Lowth said
“And Bemidji has been very good to the family.”
“It’s tough to survive in any business for 60 years
We’ve been fortunate to be blessed with good people.”
