Tottenham Hotspur played out a draw against West Ham United on Sunday Spurs took the lead in the 15th minute courtesy of Wilson Odobert Odobert was left unmarked in the middle of the box But Jarrod Bowen levelled the game in the 28th minute The score stayed level going into half-time West Ham had the better of the second half but Ange Postecoglou’s side held out to secure a 1-1 draw Jack Pitt-Brooke takes a look at the big talking points from Sunday’s game Almost every Tottenham league game since February has felt like a sideshow Sandwiched between the two legs of the Europa League semi-final against Bodo/Glimt But it still felt like Spurs drove home from the London Stadium with almost everything they wanted from the game Ange Postecoglou would have chosen three points over one if he could A loss here would have been their 20th in the league this season equalling their record within a 38-game league season set in 1912-13 If they can get through the next few league games without equalling that and in his post-match press conference at the London Stadium Postecoglou was downbeat regarding James Maddison’s knee injury saying it “doesn’t look great” following a scan They cannot afford any more — even to fringe players But everyone appeared to get through this game OK The squad should not be any more depleted when they fly to Norway on Wednesday They just had to get through this afternoon with no scrapes No Spurs player looked more motivated to prove a point here than Mathys Tel The 20-year-old was on the bench for Thursday’s first leg against Bodo/Glimt And Tel played as if he was trying to make his case that he should start the game in Norway A long ball from the back landed with Maximilian Kilman who should have been able to deal with it comfortably pressing and pressing until he had the ball at his feet Tel then rolled a simple square pass across the box Spurs did not have many more good attacking moments but the ones they did generate were down to Tel: winning a free kick from Jean-Clair Todibo in a good position playing a clever forward pass through to Richarlison there is a vacancy on the left of Spurs’ front three Postecoglou may well be tempted to start with Richarlison on Thursday There was no surprise when Postecoglou made eight changes for this game He had made eight changes for Spurs’ last league game Everyone knows that the Europa League is the priority And you could argue that Spurs’ progress in that competition justifies Postecoglou’s willingness to rotate and manage minutes in the league a consistent issue this season is that the backup players Postecoglou brings in are not able to deliver anything approaching ‘Angeball’ Spurs are so dependent on the passing ability of Cristian Romero and the non-stop engines of Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro Archie Gray — it feels like you are watching a different team Without the ability to build up from the back like they want to and without the technical skill of Bergvall and Maddison in midfield And it was nothing like the football Tottenham intend to play when they move the ball positively through the thirds And yet this pattern — the manager’s tactics jarring with the players selected — has been the story of the last few months of Spurs’ league campaign Jack Pitt-Brooke is a football journalist for The Athletic based in London. Vicario denied Bowen and James Ward-Prowse whipped a free-kick over after coming off the bench, but the final 30 minutes were dreadful. Paquetá appeared to be crying when he picked up a late yellow card. He was not alone in feeling miserable. Aston Villa have won their past four league matches Aston Villa extended their winning streak to four matches after coming from behind to beat West Ham 3-2 in the Women's Super League The two sides exchanged four goals in an action-packed first half before Chasity Grant scored what would prove to be the winner in the 54th minute Aston Villa remain ninth in the table but now sit just two points behind fifth-placed Brighton & Hove Albion Ebony Salmon opened the scoring for Natalia Arroyo's side inside five minutes coolly sliding the ball across the goal and into the bottom corner after being picked out by Rachel Daly on the right side of the box Shekiera Martinez drew the home side level with a glancing header from Verena Hanshaw's cross - her 10th league goal of the season - before Riko Ueki put them ahead flicking the ball over the head of goalkeeper Sabrina D'Angelo and tapping in from close range with Daly latching on to captain Katrina Gorry's misplaced backpass and slotting the ball beyond stranded goalkeeper Kinga Szemik Aston Villa took the lead shortly after the break Grant chasing a pass over the top from Lucy Parker and drilling the ball into the bottom corner Although West Ham pressed for an equaliser This defeat ended West Ham's five-match unbeaten streak but Rehanne Skinner's side remain seventh in the table Rachel Daly was involved in two of Aston Villa's three goals Dagenham has been something of a fortress for West Ham this season 18 of their 21 points had come on home soil and they were unbeaten in five home matches Champions Chelsea and second-placed Arsenal were the only sides to capture three points at the ground West Ham had also only lost once when Martinez was on the scoresheet so when the German forward headed home in the 18th minute these records meant nothing to Aston Villa who hadn't lost any of their previous WSL trips to West Ham (two wins and two draws) and for the second time in as many meetings in the south they came out on top with a 3-2 win The result means Aston Villa have now won four matches in a row for the first time since March 2023 Their three goals on Sunday came from three different players Nine players have been involved in goals in their past four matches And while they conceded two goals for the third match in a row for manager Arroyo -who lost her first six matches in charge - this latest win represents the opener after 15 minutes through Wilson Odobert but the lead lasted only 13 minutes before Jarrod Bowen equalised for the home team The draw left Spurs in 16th spot and facing their worst finish since 1977 a single point above the 17th-placed Hammers whose winless run in the league was extended to eight games since the end of February Both sides are safe from the threat of relegation with the bottom three finishers already confirmed Tottenham made eight changes from last Thursday's Europa League semifinal first leg win over Bodo/Glimt as they looked to keep key players fresh for the return in Norway this Thursday They took the lead after home defender Max Kilman gave away possession under pressure, allowing Mathys Tel to provide Odobert with an easy finish West Ham had a penalty claim in the 20th minute when Aaron Wan-Bissaka's cross struck Spurs defender Ben Davies on the hand but it was turned away after a VAR check although home fans did not have to wait long for the equaliser Eight minutes later, Wan-Bissaka's perfectly weighted pass found Bowen ghosting through the visiting defence to find himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario Bowen took his time as he dragged the ball across to his left before finishing it through Vicario's legs for his 10th league goal of the season Spurs striker Richarlison was through in similar circumstances at the other end of the London Stadium before halftime but his effort went across the face of goal and away from danger Tel's run down the right of the Spurs attack allowed him to get in a shot early in the second half but there was not enough power to test Alphonse Areola in the West Ham goal After that, West Ham looked the livelier of the two teams as Bowen and Emerson both missed with efforts on goal while Niclas Fuellkrug's back-post header in the 71st minute was too high Vicario made a smart stop to deny Bowen in the last six minutes as he got a headed flick-on to an in-swinging free kick delivered by substitute James Ward-Prowse There was another free-kick chance for set piece specialist Ward-Prowse in the last minute of additional time but he sent it narrowly wide Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou pointing fingers at Graham Potter, Julen Lopetegui, Tim Steidten, David Sullivan and the players But the Hammers hierarchy themselves have their own opinion on who is most culpable of all West Ham fans will have seen these statistics too many times to mention by now But they are worth laying out in black and white for context here West Ham have won 13 of their last 54 Premier League matches That is relegation form across most normal seasons The Hammers had the fourth worst defence in the top flight last season shipping a club Premier League record 74 goals This season they have improved defensively – but only marginally considering the club committed £87m to sign three new defenders in Max Kilman Instead of having the fourth worst defence in the top flight the Hammers still have the fifth worst this season with 59 shipped and three games to go Under Lopetegui West Ham won just seven games six of them in the Premier League and one in the Carabao Cup before being embarrassed 5-1 at Liverpool in the next round winning just three of 15 Premier League games and exiting the FA Cup in the other There has been a blame game culture sneaking back into the club after a period of serenity and togetherness under David Moyes Potter has blamed Lopetegui for leaving West Ham in a mess Fans have blamed former technical director Steidten and Lopetegui for squandering £155m last summer Potter then said it’s time to blame West Ham’s players after the collapse at Brighton And the players have been blaming themselves in a series of frank interviews but beyond the usual suspects Sullivan and the board have been taking a lot of flak recently too for failing to build on the club winning a first major trophy of the last 45 years West Ham fans look at Newcastle and Villa with envious glances at how they have been able to sustain their growth and progress There has been growing discontent about the manager with some calling for another change this summer West Ham’s board have delivered their verdict on Potter after the disappointing 1-1 draw with Tottenham’s reserve team And West Ham have told a prominent journalist who they really blame for the club’s shocking decline That decline has been undeniable and progressively worse West Ham went from top six midway through last season to finishing ninth under Moyes Lopetegui left them team 13th in the table midway through the next Now Potter has the Hammers sitting another four places lower at 17th in the table as he closes on bringing up half a season in charge West Ham fans know who they blame – and opinion varies from one to another But who do the board themselves point the finger at in the corridors of power According to The Telegraph’s Jason Burt it is the club’s most successful manager of the modern era Burt claims that senior West Ham sources argue the shocking decline can be traced to the second half of last season when performances and results tailed off under Moyes Burt adds that the feeling at West Ham was that Moyes’s time at the club had run its course and they wanted to make a big-name appointment and back him with significant spending as they aimed A penny for Moyes’ thoughts on this one given what he did in keeping West Ham up twice leading them to their record ever Premier League points total three consecutive seasons in Europe for the first time in their history That’s not to mention reaching the Europa League semi and quarter-finals either side of a first major trophy since 1980 Or the fact Moyes played a big part in the continued progression of Declan Rice which earned the Hammers £105m of pure profit Yes the malaise did kick in under Moyes – of that there is no doubt But how can it be argued on the one hand that Potter needs a pre-season and his own players before being judged and on the other that Moyes is to blame after Lopetegui and Steidten had just that as his successors at the Hammers helm Lopetegui and Steidten are the architects of a worst campaign since the Avram Grant relegation season And Potter should be doing much better with the players he has available – even if they aren’t his While it is interesting to hear who the owners really blame for the mess the club is in there seems to be little accountability in the actual boardroom itself Beyond the hierarchy conceding to Burt they ‘massively overspent’ last summer Ironically the claim does come as Moyes’ honeymoon period back at Everton looks well and truly over That’s after Everton fans flooded social media saying the same thing about Moyes following the Toffee’ 2-2 draw against Ipswich US EditionUK tears The Brazilian midfielder was booked after appearing to cut down rival Mikey Moore in the centre of the pitch His sliding challenge grazed the Spurs youngster who looked like he'd overrun the ball referee Michael Oliver determined the tackle was worth a yellow card so much so he was seen waving and flapping his arms before a camera shot then showed him wiping a tear away from his eye Oliver then called over the player in an attempt to warn him about his conduct talkSPORT reporter James Fielden said: “You join me here mid-head loss from Lucas Paqueta who's just been yellow carded for what looked like a fairly simple yellow card challenge. “There was a Tottenham player sprinting forward, he took him out, didn't get any of the ball and was shown a yellow card. “He started throwing his arms in the air, stropping around. Michael Oliver was like, ‘What's the big deal? Calm down. It's a yellow card’. Stop those tears flowing and get him to engage in the game again “I'm not sure what came over him there but he seems to be okay again now and he's getting on with things here.” Paqueta got on with the game but just seven minutes later he was substituted and looked devastated he looked emotional as he was replaced by James Ward-Prowse And his replacement almost won the Hammers a tight match in east London The two clubs looked to be playing out a 1-1 draw after first-half goals from Wilson Odobert and Jarrod Bowen A heavily-rotated Tottenham team had eight changes and Moore was the only substitute used as they prepare for the second leg of their Europa League semi-final against Bodo/Glimt But the starters looked to tire offering West Ham some late chances with a Ward-Prowse set piece almost headed home by Bowen and he then put a free-kick just past the post West Ham manager Graham Potter was asked about Paqueta's yellow card and subsequent reaction he insisted there was nothing untoward about the situation "I thought him and Tomas [Soucek] were just tiring a bit They'd had to go through a lot of work I haven't spoken to Lucas about that incident "There's no problem from my perspective It's just sometimes players get a bit upset when it doesn't go their way Paqueta's wife Duda Fournier took to social media to comment on the incident where she said: "I've never said anything here "My husband has a posture and strength that I admire and thatIMPRESSES me "We've been living this nightmare for two years and he's ALWAYS strong… he's always had it in his head that he would only defend himself at the right time and place and only HE knows why we're going through this "And only because of HIM are we well and living happily as a family Football can be brutal. The speed with which players can go from ‘hero to zero’ is breathtaking and careers are made or broken in weeks, sometimes in one game. West Ham have their fair share of high flyers who’ve crashed to earth in the space of a few weeks Recruited by Tim Steidten and famously pictured on the executive jet being hand-delivered to London Stadium Alvarez was feted as the Declan Rice replacement having been brought in with the Arsenal cash received from the West Ham skipper’s sale to the Gunners Initially Alvarez seemed to perform well – a regular if somewhat fiery addition to the Hammers midfield it all seemed to go wrong for ‘El Machin’ last summer when he was injured whilst on international duty Alvarez arrived in London to Hammers’ fans acclaim His pace seemed to disappear and from last summer onward he was always just a little behind the game: It probably accounts for this huge accumulation of yellow and red cards notably early last season under Lopetegui the low point being his second yellow for scything down Mohammed Salah in the League Cup tie The incident appeared to unfold in slow motion as Hammers fans looked on in horror knowing what was coming and unable to stop the inevitable Bad tackles and frequent yellow cards followed as Alvarez was reported as one of the ‘Lopetegui want-aways’ last Autumn Such is his standing now that whilst he trains and is obviously fit – he’s in the ‘West Ham prepare for Spurs’ training gallery from Friday – so he’s apparently got over the claimed ‘back niggle’ which kept him out of the squad for the previous two games: Potter just chooses to leave him out of the match day squad so the Mexico International team Captain doesn’t even make the bench He is clearly destined to be sold: Having been linked in April with amazingly a move across London or a Bundesliga move next month it’s pretty clear there is no way back for the Mexican now From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970. imagine we are having a chat at half time over a pint at L S and "let's disagree without falling out" Just watch Chelsea’s first goal earlier this season at LS…..I am still gobsmacked as to how slow he was in trying to prevent the shot at goal But for that he’d still be a fan favourite But he’s lost too much pace to play in the Premier League If you okay with 3 centre backs and 2 full backs on the wings do you really need a defensive midfielder as well Surely a couple of box to box players who can pass tackle and shoot should be enough or is it just because we are playing higher up the pitch so he is exposed more to running midfielders (clearly not ours!) Sometimes an injury can have a dramatic long term effect on a player Alvarez is measured against Rice and so no chance from the start combine that with losing a little pace and he’s done Westham likely won’t get their money back on him but he should go anyway Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" SMITHFIELD — Thousands of people turned out for the 39th annual Ham & Yam Festival in Downtown Smithfield on May 2-3 The Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation (DSDC) said the event was an overwhelming success the Ham & Yam Festival brings together thousands to celebrate the spirit This year’s festival was no exception—featuring a full day of music the best ham biscuits and sweet potatoes around,” organizers said in a news release on Monday “We are especially grateful to the Town of Smithfield for their incredible support With the new addition of closing Market Street for the festival the Town took on new logistical challenges with grace and efficiency… and community spirit are what bring the Ham & Yam Festival to life each year From sponsors and vendors to musicians and families We’re proud to call Smithfield home—and prouder still to celebrate it with all of you.” Thanks to the county employees it was cleaned The Vikings fullback once again is hosting the annual UNRL Celebrity Softball Game, which will benefit the Ham Family Scholarship Fund and additional nonprofits Originally started by the Thielen Foundation with Minnesota native and former Viking Adam Thielen, the Celebrity Softball Game has become a favorite event for fans of all ages. south of Archbold Standing by a tent erected on the college lawn enthusiastically addressed a group of students saying who is president of the Williams County Amateur Radio Association (WCARA) reminded them that so many facets of amateur radio can lead to fascinating careers in the fields of science He explained how his own interest in amateur radio and computer programming led him to some interesting applications in his own career The students were there to meet with area ham radio operators as a part of an open house in celebration of World Amateur Radio Day an instructor at the college and a recent graduate of the ARRL Teacher’s Institute has been working with other WCARA club members to plan experiences that can stir more interest in young people about amateur radio After getting the go-ahead from the college to hold the Ham Radio Open House on April 22 the group set up a tent with some working radios antennas and remote solar-powered equipment an instructor at the Four County Career Center and he said he would bring over a couple of classes of his high school students to the tent Since the students from both schools are largely from Williams the club also put out the word to some members of the neighboring county amateur radio clubs to see if they would like to come that day secretary of the Fulton County Amateur Radio Club made an impactful presentation as she contacted a man who was operating his radio in a Parks On The Air contest in New Jersey It opened up a slew of questions about how amateur radio operators make contacts president of the Defiance County Amateur Radio Club The students asked which antennas were better to use than others saying how the best antenna often depends upon what you are trying to accomplish but also elaborated that different antennas have been created due to the experimentation that amateur radio operators are known for Ham radio operators have a reputation for their ingenuity as they try to find new and different ways to make communication breakthroughs he showed the students an antenna he made out of a tape measure used for searching for the direction of a signal demonstrated a radio with waterfalls on the screen to indicate places where people were talking He stopped at one of the waterfalls to make a contact and ended up talking with W5LEX the radio room of the USS Lexington on the Gulf coast of Texas He also pointed out that many operators are using computers attached to their radios to make digital contacts around the world and in other cases some amateurs are setting up cutting edge communications systems to provide communications in communities during emergencies use their equipment to make special contacts with astronauts in space and in the International Space Station Geiger said he knows there is interest in working on a class project to do just that in his class the Williams County club would like to offer some training classes that help young people and other interested people become new ham operators All the people who coordinated the event agreed they would like to see it repeated next year Geiger said that after one of the classes returned from the tent that day a student asked to borrow a technician class license manual from the group of ARRL manuals he keeps on hand He said he hopes she will soon be able to join the growing group of young amateur Bowen raced in behind Spurs’ defense and shot between Guglielmo Vicario’s legs from near the end line to reach double-digit PL goals for the third time in four seasons It would be discouraging that Ange Postecoglou’s side couldn’t muster a better showing against a side struggling as badly as West Ham but the truth is Spurs haven’t had more than one or two halfway decent PL performances since the divided over whether Graham Potter is the right man to lead the club forward as his dismal record stretched to just three wins in 16 games While most fans felt Potter must be given the summer to rebuild the team with his own players there are increasing doubts about the under pressure Hammers boss The malaise at West Ham is nothing new and dates back to January 2024 spanning three managers and a complete squad overhaul So the worry is that the Hammers will perform yet another rebuild which on the evidence of this season is sorely needed Potter has taken West Ham backwards in terms of the league table and results dropping from 13th when Julen Lopetegui was sacked With only a dotted line separating West Ham and the relegation zone as things stand there can be no more backward steps next season And the teams coming up are expected to be much more competitive than the last two seasons In truth West Ham need players right across the pitch But midfield and up front are the biggest issues West Ham do not possess a single box-to-box midfield powerhouse like most of their rivals The good thing is that Potter appeared to spot that immediately on joining the club in January as he planned to sign one But now a top star West Ham planned to sign twists the knife with a brutal new verdict on Potter after his snub West Ham had looked on course to sign Ezechiel Banzuzi for around £13m but the deal didn’t happen Last week young Dutch midfield powerhouse Banzuzi admitted the Hammers wanted to sign him from Belgian side OH Leuven in January but that didn’t happen either,” Banzuzi said as he admitted a move to Monaco fell through too Banzuzi did not elaborate on the reason why the West Ham move didn’t happen And it doesn’t do Potter any favours in the big debate over his future – because what Banzuzi has said suggests West Ham are going to struggle to attract players this summer OH Leuven ended up agreeing a deal to sell Banzuzi to RB Leipzig in the summer Now Banzuzi says it is a good thing the West Ham move didn’t happen because not only are the team struggling he also doesn’t like the way Potter plays football that was on my mind,” Banzuzi admitted about the interest from West Ham in January “But in retrospect it is good that it did not happen it is not the type of football I want to play.” Many Hammers fans would agree with the powerful 20-year-old on the evidence so far West Ham need to drastically improve next season And in order to do that they need yet another sizeable overhaul of players That in itself will present its own challenges in terms of gelling next season So Potter must give supporters something to reassure them in the last three games that the Banzuzi scenario is not going to be a problem this summer It also proves players do look at where a team is in the table when making decisions on their future While a win could lift West Ham up to the dizzy heights of 14th finishing 17th will make them a very unattractive proposition for prospective signings Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United have shared a particular and very local rivalry for almost 130 years now came to Tottenham in the Thames and Medway League in September 1898 They kept bumping into each other in the Southern League before settling on the Football League and meeting there for the first time in 1920 And yet of all the 225 meetings between these two clubs over the last 127 years right here in the fourth decade of the Premier League surely felt the least like what this fixture is meant to be Think about the rich history of this contest the unique memories it has provided over the years Think about the qualities you would expect to see in any match between Tottenham and West Ham that the players were channelling this rivalry making it real through their own quality and bravery and the pitch; none of this at all was remotely detectable here at the London Stadium on 4 May a profound non-event that will leave no trace on anyone’s memories The two first-half goals arrived out of nowhere One from Mathys Tel pressing Max Kilman and forcing an error The second from West Ham constructing the only incisive passing move of the entire game But those were the only two ripples in an otherwise totally placid sea The second half was such an eventless drift towards the final whistle that it was almost soothing to watch There was none of the jeopardy that keeps you on the edge of your seat as the clock ticks towards 90 it felt like a money-spinning post-season friendly in a faraway place was taking place in east London during the regular season We could talk all day about how bad this game was Doing so may be the only way to preserve it in our memories The more interesting point is why was this game so bad this was never going to be a match of dazzlingly high quality West Ham and Spurs had 36 and 37 points respectively from their 34 games played before this one They are the two worst teams out of the relegation zone If you take the three relegated sides as being a separate category then Spurs and West Ham are the worst of the core 17 Even worse than Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United This was not even West Ham against this version of Spurs at their best This was West Ham against Spurs with eight changes Ange Postecoglou has been rotating to keep his players maximally fit and fresh for the Europa League It is impossible to blame him for doing so because of the rewards on offer in that competition And with Spurs now two games from lifting the trophy you can say that his policy has almost paid out But when he makes eight changes for a league game — as he also did for Spurs’ game at Liverpool last Sunday — he is obviously replacing his best players with less good ones But this is not only about the aggregate quality of the two line-ups If quality was the only reason to watch football then no one would go and watch lower-league football But people have always loved football at all levels What is lacking in quality can often be made up in competitive tension The unbalanced nature of this Premier League campaign has seen the three promoted sides all fail to ever get a footing in the league Just as it was very clear early on that West Ham and Spurs were having disappointing league seasons it was also clear early on that they were under no threat of the drop They were never going to be seriously competing with Ipswich Town they were never going to catch the more competent mid-table sides They are stuck in the limbo league of the mid-teens When Spurs won 4-1 at Ipswich on 22 February it was clear that they would be staying in the Premier League and there was no longer any fear of seeing Ipswich in the rear-view mirror it has felt as if the Europa League had priority And most league games since then have almost felt like a contractual obligation to get through a kickabout to keep the players sharp and tuned-up before their next big European match This was Spurs’ ninth league game since Portman Road their only win coming against Southampton at home Their best performance from those nine games came against Nottingham Forest at home when they were 2-0 down after 16 minutes and could only get back to 2-1 But at least in some of those games Spurs have been playing a team with something of their own to go for The problem here was that these were two teams with nothing to play for two teams just trying to get through the afternoon unscathed Pitting this West Ham side against Spurs’ back-ups in a league game right now is the football equivalent of repeatedly multiplying zero by itself And yet the reality for Spurs is that they fly to Norway on Wednesday If their full-strength team gets a result against Bodo/Glimt — or even loses by one goal — then they will be in the Europa League final on 21 May That will feel like the opposite of this — memorable the sort of game that justifies and makes sense of a lifetime of being a football fan no one will say on Wednesday that Spurs should have picked a full-strength team at London Stadium Postecoglou’s decisions have already been justified West Ham have none of that to fall back on this month no excuses for jogging through a game so important to their fans They only have three matches left this season now And maybe the next time these two teams meet anything to make their next meeting different from this (Top photo: Benjamin Cremel/AFP via Getty Images) It is common practice for there to be tension in dressing rooms at football clubs but it is damning for West Ham United that bust-ups have been a regular theme under two managers this season who replaced David Moyes in May 2024 upon the expiry of his contract Alphonse Areola and Mohammed Kudus during his ill-fated eight-month spell as head coach Lopetegui’s failure to create a harmonious atmosphere culminated in the Spaniard being the shortest-lived managerial appointment in the club’s 124-year history But tension has also been brewing since Graham Potter succeeded Lopetegui in January According to sources The Athletic has spoken to who all spoke under the condition of anonymity to protect relationships it has emerged that there have been fights between the players and Potter faces a tough challenge of lifting morale with West Ham winless in their seven Premier League games Their last victory was against Leicester City on February 27 Club insiders admit the pressure is felt across the board but remain hopeful of Potter turning it around The head coach signed a two-and-a-half-year contract — and this deal does not include a break clause The club were initially only willing to give Potter a contract until the end of the season The club’s hierarchy also interviewed former Milan manager Paulo Fonseca who flew to London to meet majority shareholder David Sullivan but his camp got the impression Potter was West Ham’s preferred option But there has not been a new-manager bounce like Moyes and Vitor Pereira’s impact at Everton and Wolves eight points behind Everton and 12 points behind Pereira’s side Moyes’ influence at Everton means he was named the Premier League manager of the month for February Pereira is in the running for April’s award Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe and Liverpool’s Arne Slot West Ham have sporadically shown progression under Potter There were encouraging performances against Chelsea but Potter has a paltry return of three wins in 14 Premier League games The nadir of his spell was last weekend’s 3-2 capitulation against Brighton & Hove Albion Supporters voiced their displeasure at forward Niclas Fullkrug’s demotion to the bench who launched a diatribe against his team-mates after the draw against Southampton the week prior In Potter’s post-match press conference at Brighton he looked like a man under pressure when he said: “If you want me to swear He arrived at Friday’s press conference at Rush Green in a happier mood but candidly admitted how West Ham’s struggles have affected his family life “We were close to winning (against Brighton) like we were against Liverpool,” said Potter close to another decent performance and a positive victory result and then you’re back into everything’s bad results-wise You’ve got to deal with that but time is a great healer “They’ve (my family) known me long enough to know that let’s just leave him to curse at his computer or whatever’ And this is the thing that you have to try all the time But this notion that you can just have an experience like that and then just be alright with people It takes time to get it out of your system.” Summer signings will dictate Potter’s success He predicts an exciting window but pursuing key targets will be arduous with no European football to offer West Ham have to sell before they can buy and sources at West Ham say Kudus is expected to depart this summer to fund their recruitment But the club will not entertain any offers for captain Jarrod Bowen whose contract expires in the summer of 2030 The squad will be overhauled with stalwarts Aaron Cresswell Michail Antonio and Vladimir Coufal entering the final months of their deals Guido Rodriguez and Emerson Palmieri have uncertain futures are unlikely to be converted into permanent deals Potter was reluctant to say who does not feature in his plans but had an interesting observation about his squad “It’s hard to say at the moment,” he said when asked how much change he anticipates there being We have to make decisions that make sure the club is in a better place going forward We’re working all the time to try to get the level we want.” Potter’s side needs to show improvement in the coming weeks otherwise the lurching turbulence will continue to gather pace Roshane Thomas is a staff writer who covers West Ham United West Ham United has shunned a kit supply option with Castore in order to sign a long-term contract with New Balance from the 2026-27 season The agreement is expected to run for five seasons with New Balance to replace Umbro as the east London club’s official technical partner West Ham has been kitted out by Umbro since the start of the 2015-16 season and the current deal is due to expire at the end of the 2025-26 campaign West Ham’s commercial department recently went through a tender process and its decision to opt for New Balance will come as a major blow to Castore The UK sportswear manufacturer had hoped to add the club to its portfolio as part of its March 2024 agreement with Umbro licensee, GL Dameck to become the exclusive ‘Umbro Professional Team Sports’ sub-licence holder in the UK Umbro-branded clubs continue to wear Umbro kit until each individual contracts run out after which Castore has the exclusive right “to seek to work” with those clubs West Ham opted against going down that route and instead sought a new technical partner from 2026-27 Umbro’s current Premier League portfolio comprises AFC Bournemouth, Brentford, West Ham and Ipswich Town albeit the latter has been relegated to the EFL Championship from 2025-26 a new UK-based brand trademarked by the club’s Chinese owners which will play Premier League football in 2025-26 West Ham is the second European football club for which New Balance has won the kit supplier contract from Castore. Earlier this year, Bayer 04 Leverkusen confirmed it was switching brands from 2025-26 breaking the Castore contract a year early Castore had entered the German Bundesliga for the first time with its Leverkusen deal, which was announced in February 2022 The impending West Ham deal marks a return to the Premier League kit supply business for New Balance following a controversial exit in 2020 which resulted in a UK High Court battle New Balance became Liverpool’s technical partner in 2015 but the US brand went onto sue the club after it emerged it was likely to be replaced by Nike upon the expiry of its deal with Liverpool at the end of the 2019-20 season. The brand claimed the club was refusing to honour a renewal clause that meant the pair’s agreement should be extended.  cited the status of rival brand Nike’s associated athletes and influencers as a key factor in his judgment that New Balance could not match the terms of Liverpool’s proposed deal with Nike.  Last month, Liverpool confirmed it was swapping Nike for Adidas from 2025-26, a story exclusively broken by SportBusiness in April 2024 New Balance this week confirmed its return to Serie A from 2025-26 with the announcement of its new kit supply deal with Atalanta Under the terms of the multi-year contract, reported by SportBusiness in January The Spanish sportswear manufacturer has supplied Atalanta’s kit since 2017-18 when it succeeded Nike While New Balance kits out mid-table Serie B side Modena it has no current agreements in the top division – indeed it has been absent since the end of its Roma contract after the 2022-23 season Mirroring its legal dispute with Liverpool in the UK New Balance took Roma to the ICC International Court of Arbitration in early 2023 after the club agreed a deal with a new supplier from 2023-24 The US-based firm insisted that it had matched a bid by the then unnamed competitor and should be awarded the renewal as per a ‘right of first refusal’ clause in its contract. However, the arbitration court rejected New Balance’s plea to stop the execution of the new technical contract “in its entirety” ©2025 SBG Companies Limited or its affiliated companies West Ham’s annual fixture against Tottenham is usually one of the most fiery feisty encounters: I remember back in the Upton Park days just walking to the ground required a bit of careful navigation planning when attending with a ten year old just to avoid the pub with the opposition fans spilling out Yesterdays West Ham v Spurs encounter was a case of the apathetic versus the distracted The home fans couldn’t care less after being insulted for months being expected to pay for the privilege of watching dross on the pitch whilst our opponents made eight changes with their far more important fixtures the bookends either side of this valueless game What happened before kick off should serve as a very real very present threat of fan disenchantment which will come to hit the West Ham finances in the bank balance-if indeed it has not already The ham fisted PA technician played ‘Bubbles’ a bit early and the fans creaked upright and gave a good impression of caring: However the teams were late to appear and the song had long finished As a consequence the two teams walked out after the music and were greeted by absolute silence In my hundreds of games I’ve never witnessed anything like it If the board – and David Sullivan – haven’t already taken note that season ticket sales are shockingly bad as we suspect then keeping this dreary style of play (dross I think it was called) with an unimaginative defensively minded coach who turns every game into a contest for audiences just to stay awake- then the warning bells were ringing out in deafening silence yesterday Keep playing like this and nobody will give a toss Certainly not enough to pay £75 for a match ticket and £25 for some food and drink next season she’s going to watch Leyton Orient as the football is better and the ground is nicer And it’s a hundred quid a week cheaper The board cannot say they haven’t been warned We were late and in no hurry and ended up arriving just before half time Possibly the worst derby game with Spurs I have witnessed in 50 years As mentioned elsewhere the apathy is at an all-time high (and I was at the midweek home game at the Boleyn v Sheff Wednesday two weeks after they knocked us out of the FACup and the South Bank sat down!😀) European adventures masked mostly dross over the last three years – but as others have stated a mixture of dullard managers and terrible management at board level has left us with one of the oldest squads and slowest midfields on the planet so how did Moyes and Lop and Steidten not see it Bottom line is the board are happy with 17th and will be happy with 10,000 fewer season ticket holders so they can sell more half and half scarves to tourists – remember we are all replaceable as far as they are concerned – the more sanitised newbies and fewer old school the better We still go to see each other without having to arrange it my daughter comes and has been since she was six but we are on the cusp of giving it up – not through a lack of loyalty but through boredom and zero connection with the club in its current form I hope things change but can’t see it until we are run in a professional manner – which won’t happen until there is a change of ownership Leaving The Boleyn was a horrendous but necessary move .Moving to a totally unsuitable new venue was the problem .It suited Brady and Sullivan as they love being seen as “big players “but it did not take the fans or the players into consideration .Sullivan has vast wealth from his porn activities but has not contributed anything positive to our club .He is regarded with disdain by other owners and is notoriously difficult to deal with in transfer negotiations Why would any decent young player join us if someone else were interested.Nothing will improve while Sullivan is at the helm Relegation is a real possibility next season whatever manager is in charge As a fan of 65 years and season ticket holder for 25 of them I cannot believe that Sullivan has dragged us down into the gutter he inhabits .Very sad 😢 Well Martin ,I am not sure where you were in the ground yesterday but it definitely wasn’t silent when the players came out ,exaggeration comes to mind I think you are just trying to get some comments favourable or not I don’t like this attitude on C& H anymore Well Martin ,I am not sure where you were in the ground yesterday but it definitely wasn’t silent when the players came out ,exaggeration comes to mind I think you are just trying to get some comments favourable or not. I don’t like this attitude on C& H anymore West Ham until you die! Good on you Sheik. I am a lifelong fan living Down Under so it’s different for me. I have never had the displeasure of going to watch the Hammers at London Stadium. I only have memories of Upton Park. I am also gutted to have to watch how West Ham seem to be slowly dying as if a cancer is spreading through the club. The cancer needs to be removed for the club to survive. I don’t think I need to spell out what, or rather who, the cancer is! You are so negative that it will better without you. The more we criticise these parasitic owners the more they treat us with disdain. Can we as fans 5 minutes before the end of the forest game just get up turn our backs and leave, treat them with the same contempt they treat us. As a life-long Spurs fan who grew up in Stepney, surrounded by West Ham (friends and family) fans, I set rivalries aside when saying the following. The fan base that IS West Ham deserve much, much better. I know there’s no going back, but a club with the history WHU has cannot continue in this way, and at LS (no football club deserves THAT ground!). Board out, club out. What a sad position Our Club is in, an all-time Low! Yes, Potter is not delivering what we expected, but is he fully to blame? NO! it is simply the owner who seems clueless! Time he should consider selling the club, and allow the club to have Top Owners in Charge! I disagree I think Potter is to blame He is the ONLY manager that took over half way through the season that has managed to go down the table instead of UP His stats have not lied Coming out from the ground Sunday was like coming out of a church The atmosphere is dead and long gone as is my W Ham It’s fine. The 2m waiting list will be desperate to get their hands on ST’s left by others. We can also welcome more tourist fans rinsed by the travel companies to the experience the wonders of the London Stadium, oh and if you can please wear your away team strip. Shell of a club. It’s a long way back from this and what Sully and co have done. My first Spurs game was 91/92 I think. Holy moly the atmosphere. Don’t tell me LS is an improvement. Same here, I’ve been an ST holder for years but I’m sick of it. Where is the value for money? The games are dreadful to watch, the atmosphere is just gloom, the cost is insane. I’m off to non league. They wore West Ham shirts with ‘Daddy’ and ‘10’ on their backs It was arranged as a treat for Filippo after turning four Tomas Soucek gave him a high five as they were lining up filmed it all on her phone like a proud mum would and regardless of your opinion on the 27-year-old Brazilian and the spot-fixing accusations aimed at him via the FA it may explain why this match carried an extra emotional edge for him Mail Sport revealed on April 1 how Paqueta was struggling to bear the burden of his betting trial sources stressing how taxing it was on him He has received 29 yellow cards since it was revealed the FA were investigating him or rather 29 overt reminders of the alleged offence which could yet rob him of his career as the footballer accused of being booked on purpose that flash of yellow never penetrating his psyche Mail Sport has mentioned previously how West Ham insiders have praised his professionalism for never bringing his baggage into training or indeed games Lucas Paqueta broke down in tears after being booked in West Ham's draw with Tottenham The West Ham midfielder is still facing spot-fixing accusations which the FA are investigating Maria Eduarda Fournier shared an emotional statement on social media as she expressed a desire for her husband to be shown more respect We are told Bowen checked on him further in the confines of the changing room though disappointed to have only drawn with a second-string Tottenham side She released a statement describing the last two years as a ‘nightmare’ for her husband and West Ham sources say they suspect the events of the last few weeks may have contributed to what we saw on Sunday Insiders say Paqueta mentally built himself up for his trial He believed it would last no longer than three weeks and then confirmation would come that he did not do what the FA are claiming the scale of the evidence being evaluated meant it was not concluded by the end of its allotted three-week timeframe Mail Sport has been told it will be resuming this month but on varying dates when the tribunal members It means Paqueta’s hell is being prolonged and he is approaching a summer in which his life could be further turned upside down if he is found guilty One senior source at West Ham claimed there has been ‘zero account taken of the mental stress on him and his family’ when contacted We do not know if Paqueta is guilty or innocent He himself does not know which verdict will be reached Those involved in the case say there have been 'good days and bad days' but they are still none the wiser as to how it will end Paqueta has been fighting to prove he is innocent of picking up yellow cards on purpose during games to influence betting outcomes but faces a lifetime ban if he is found guilty by the panel West Ham team-mate Jarrod Bowen quickly rushed to Paqueta's side against Tottenham Paqueta's wife said on Sunday night that they have been 'living this nightmare for two years' West Ham insiders fear the odds are stacked against them due to the standard of proof being based on a ‘balance of probabilities’ as opposed to the more rigorous ‘beyond a reasonable doubt’ The club have never pressured Paqueta to play for them while all this is ongoing They have always allowed him to have the final say on whether he feels mentally prepared we witnessed a human being appearing to buckle under the weight of the last two years and Paqueta can only hope the FA do not get their way in preventing him from walking on to a pitch with Benicio and Filippo again The comments below have not been moderated By posting your comment you agree to our house rules Do you want to automatically post your MailOnline comments to your Facebook Timeline Your comment will be posted to MailOnline as usual We will automatically post your comment and a link to the news story to your Facebook timeline at the same time it is posted on MailOnline To do this we will link your MailOnline account with your Facebook account We’ll ask you to confirm this for your first post to Facebook You can choose on each post whether you would like it to be posted to Facebook. Summerville, however, suffered a setback in his rehabilitation, and West Ham’s performance director Richard Collinge confirmed via a club statement on Wednesday that the procedure “went well.” “Crysencio will now concentrate on his recovery and rehabilitation here at Rush Green, with the aim of working towards his return next season,” Collinge said. Summerville joined West Ham on a five-year contract from Leeds United in August 2024. He played 22 times for the club before suffering the hamstring injury in January, scoring once. Prior to his move to the London Stadium, Summerville had scored 21 goals and provided 10 assists in the 2023-24 campaign as Leeds narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League. West Ham’s recent 3-2 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion extended their winless run to seven Premier League matches. Potter’s side are 17th in the table, but safe from relegation with Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton’s Championship statuses next season already confirmed. shirts with navy blue shorts It’s expected to be cloudy with a moderate breeze in the capital on Sunday Travel information for those making the trip to the London Stadium can be found here With focus firmly on European progression, Tottenham Hotspur still had a London Derby with which to contend A trip to the other side of town to take on West Ham United was the task and one which Spurs managed without any hint of excelling Ange Postecoglou rotated heavily as expected with eight changes from Spurs’ win over Bodø/Glimt with some familiar faces missing through injury: neither James Maddison nor Dominic Solanke made the matchday squad following knocks picked up in that match Things weren’t exactly silky smooth at the London Stadium Both sides played like their positions on the table and after a messy start during which it seemed like West Ham had the upper hand the Hammers instead turned provider for the Lilywhites Max Kilman failed to deal with a long ball down the left under pressure from Mathys Tel with the Frenchman stealing possession and knocking a pass across the 18-yard box was on hand to gleefully accept and take a touch before passing it into the net past West Ham keeper Alphonse Areola It wasn’t long before a defensive calamity Aaron Wan Bissaka strode forward with the ball in space before playing a simple pass into Matt Bowen whose run had been completely lost by Ben Davies Bowen made his way to the right-hand corner of the six-yard box before knocking a shot through the legs of Vicario and bringing the scores level The second half felt even more pointless than the first Both sides were playing like teams who didn’t really want to be there but the stupor was occasionally interrupted by moments of brightness from both teams Spurs’ best chance of the second 45’ stemmed from an excellent pass from Tel into Richarlison who passed the ball across the face of goal with no fellow attacker making the run to meet it West Ham would have thought they went ahead late as well with a James Ward-Prowse set piece curled into a dangerous area catching Guglielmo Vicario in two minds A stooping Bowen flicked on the free kick towards goal and Vicario was forced into a brilliant reaction save to keep things all tied up Michael Oliver decided enough was enough and put the fans out of their misery with the final score 1-1 breaking down in tears after receiving a yellow card in the second half The midfielder had to be briefly consoled by teammates with many linking his reaction to the ongoing investigation by the English FA which could lead to a lifetime ban from soccer Paquetá faces serious charges of misconduct The Football Association (FA) alleges he deliberately sought yellow cards in four Premier League matches — against Leicester (Nov 2022) and Bournemouth (Aug 2023) — to influence betting markets which prohibits players from intentionally affecting match outcomes for betting purposes The Sun reports that Paquetá used a second mobile phone during the investigation and discarded it after his primary device was returned — a move seen as an attempt to obstruct the process Paquetá could face permanent suspension from football He would still have the right to appeal within the FA and later to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) Paquetá’s wife support him in social media. His wife voiced support on social media after Sunday’s match Fans have also raised concerns about the player’s mental state though it remains unclear if his emotional reaction was directly tied to the investigation My husband has a posture and strength that I admire and that We've been living this nightmare for two years he's always had it in his head that he would only defend himself at the right time and place and only HE knows why we're going through this And only because of HIM are we well and living happily as a family I just wish people would respect him… People are mean and unfair By Premier League Writer for Athlon Sports
