The crazy thing is that I didn’t have to choose between any of the above and the Pope. For reasons I will never quite understand, I got to be in a room with all of them—plus a hundred or so others who had also been summoned, without much advance notice, to the Vatican on a late-spring morning in June, when Rome was hot but not so hot that all you could talk about was how hot it was. Everyone’s got a Catholic-clergy joke up their sleeve, perhaps one they heard at a party. Mine is: A cop stops a car two priests are riding in. “I’m looking for a couple of child molesters,” he tells them. The priests look at each other. “We’ll do it!” they say. Substitute rabbis or Baptist ministers for priests, and you’ll get nothing. I mean, the Catholic Church earned those laughs, and every time its senior clerics look away, or quietly send an offending clergyman to the back bench, it’s making this scandal larger than its ministry, at least to an outsider such as myself. “Can you help me turn this around?” I imagined the Pope asking. “How can we get back to the sex-starved-nun jokes we all so enjoyed in the past?” This is a man who had just been caught using an Italian word that translated to “faggotry” for the second time in three weeks. After our visit, which was covered by seemingly every news organization on Earth, the gaffe would be brought up again and again, especially in comment sections, by people convinced that, had they been invited to the Vatican, they’d have stayed home in protest, or perhaps would have attended and then caused a scene, most likely one involving paint. It didn’t bother me, though. When I heard that the Pope had said “faggotry,” I laughed, in large part because it’s a funny word. Then, too, it’s not something you’d call a person—it’s not like “Shut up, fag.” Rather, it connotes behavior: “Take your faggotry outside, please.” Pope Francis can’t preside over same-sex marriages, but he created a firestorm within his Church by blessing gay people about to be married. “If they accept the Lord and have good will, who am I to judge them?” he asked, in 2013. Then, yes, he said “faggotry,” but he apologized for it. Both times. I don’t think that he’s a homophobe so much as an eighty-seven-year-old. (“I said what again? Really?”) My feeling is that if you want a church that is a hundred per cent gay-friendly, go join one—there are plenty to be had—or start your own. “Yes, but I want Our Lady of Sorrows to celebrate Pride Month,” I can hear someone whining. It’s like going to Burger King and demanding a Big Mac. If you want a Big Mac, go across the street to McDonald’s. Jesus. Also, I wasn’t bothered by the Pope’s use of “faggotry” because I’m not queer; I’m gay. The difference is that queer people are offended by just about everything. Gay people just wonder what they’ll wear to the Vatican at the crack of dawn, and what the proper etiquette is. “If he holds out his hand, you can opt to kiss his ring!” my friend Leslie, who was brought up Catholic, wrote when I told her I was going. I was raised in the Greek Orthodox Church. There, we kissed the priest’s hand when receiving Communion, though twice I moved up a few inches and kissed his watch instead, just to see how he’d react. “Actually, no,” another friend wrote. “This Pope hates having his ring kissed, so if he holds out his hand, just shake it.” I was in Sussex when my invitation arrived. It was eight-thirty in the morning, and by lunchtime I had my plane ticket and had booked a hotel within walking distance of the Vatican, which, like the city-states of San Marino and Monaco, is its own separate country, and could thus be added to a list I have on my computer titled “Countries I Have Been To.” The Vatican would be my sixtieth. There’s another list on my computer titled “Stars I Have Seen.” People don’t count if they are onstage in a concert or a play. They have to be at large, or at an occasion we were both invited to. According to an online article my travel agent sent, one that referred to my fellow Vatican invitees as “yucksters,” I’d soon be adding two American comedians, a British one, and an actress, also American, to my list. “Plus the Pope,” Hugh reminded me when I told him that I was definitely going. “Oh, right,” I said, the way I might have had he said, “Plus Sully Sullenberger.” I guess I’d been limiting my list to entertainers and people who aren’t in show business but dazzle nevertheless, like Ann Richards, the late governor of Texas. If I don’t see the Pope as dazzling, I suppose it’s because I’m not religious in any way. On my deathbed, I’ll likely cover my bases and beg for forgiveness, but not until I’m coughing up blood, or see Hugh reaching for the plug of my respirator. Me, I’m just not a picture person. Am I glad other people have cameras? Sometimes. Like at the dinner Stephen Colbert arranged the night before our papal audience. I look at the photos of the assembled guests and wonder, What was I doing there? Why not Garrison Keillor, Tina Fey, or Donald Glover, to name just three of a thousand more qualified people? It was like a reproduction of “The Last Supper” with one of the disciples replaced by Snoopy. “Does anyone have a favorite God joke?” Colbert asked as our final course was served. “It doesn’t have to be your own.” you’re still out of the woods.”Cartoon by Teresa Burns ParkhurstCopy link to cartoonCopy link to cartoonLink copied who had no appetite and passed me all her plates after just a bite or two That meant double servings of four separate pasta dishes plus all the food I snatched from the plate of Jim Gaffigan’s youngest son and my watchband was cutting off the circulation in my left hand The polite but underwhelming response I got from people who tell jokes for a living—who fill stadiums—should have taught me a lesson “What’s the worst part of having sex with Jesus “He’s always wanting to come into your heart.” Mine were ones people had told me at book signings I comfort myself by remembering that everyone secretly feels out of place just as they were at six-forty-five the following morning when we met at an entrance gate near the Pope’s living quarters and were led to a magnificently frescoed room in the Apostolic Palace we joined the hundred other people who’d been invited: more international writers and comics She was the only non-Vatican representative to address the crowd that morning Her remarks lasted a minute or two and were in Italian The assembled group stood and applauded as he entered the room and took his thronelike seat before us It speaks to the man’s humility that he allows every rank-and-file clergy member to outdress him The cardinals were resplendent in their black cassocks which had bright-scarlet buttons and a matching sash called a fascia who wore morning coats and white bow ties coupled with elaborate bibs The Swiss Guard looked like Renaissance-era toy soldiers in their multicolored striped outfits standing just so with feathers in their helmets Even the friars in their dung-colored robes and sandals were more strikingly dressed than the Pope who looked a bit mother-of-the-bride in a white cassock with a shawl-type thing over his shoulders a cross on which you could have crucified the late Queen of England The Pope read a prepared statement of which we were each given a copy It amounted to: laughter makes the world go round he got a reaction by sticking a thumb above his ear and wagging his fingers as one member of the American delegation said afterward “we really just laughed out of politeness.” The part that moved me took place after his address we were led up the aisle and personally greeted The Pope remained seated and shook each of our hands Some people brought him gifts; others leaned in to tell him something “Thanks for having me.” Standing before him I felt the same pity I’d felt for the Queen and would feel for anyone who has to meet people for a living Nothing stirred inside me the way that it did in 2015 where I’d been invited to talk with some speechwriters I feared that I might spontaneously combust—with respect was like meeting the Dalai Lama: not an inconvenience by any stretch and then took a selfie with the Pope in the background the majority of our time was spent waiting but the clothes we saw made it all worthwhile Then my friend Austin wrote from the States and told me that while in Rome I had to go to Gammarelli that’s been dressing the Pope and his associates for generations so late in the afternoon I went with Julia Louis-Dreyfus who wore great clothes and was seemingly up for anything I’d worried on the walk over that Gammarelli wouldn’t sell to laymen “I’m going to tell them that my brother is a priest,” I said to her and I thought this might make for a good Christmas present.” who was young and slender and spoke very good English that I collect religious garments from around the world “He’s actually a noted historian,” Julia said If I wanted to be put on the spot like this “I also study history,” the young man said “Sometimes I write for magazines,” I told him That’s the ankle-length robe Catholic priests wear “We start by choosing the wool,” the young man said “Then we select the buttons and take your measurements.” A Gammarelli cassock generally takes months to make and involves several fittings reflects the high quality of work that goes into it it’s not as involved as a bespoke suit—there are no pants to worry about no zippers in this case—but it is intricately pleated and lined I was still willing to go ahead with it and was being measured when the young man left the dressing room and returned with a cassock that was already finished but had never been collected Perhaps the priest who ordered it had died and I got two—the classic black one and a scarlet model that a cardinal would wear “Is it against the law to dress like a priest?” I whispered to Julia as I did up the last of the thirty-three buttons each of which symbolizes a year of Jesus’ life and leaves you wishing he’d been crucified at twelve you’re developing arthritis in your fingers I loved the idea of wearing my cassock on the street Then I imagined myself walking along and being approached by a person in distress or by another priest asking me if I’d heard the news about Father O’Shea or Archbishop DiMaggio not two minutes into the Eucharist!” What does one say in that situation I saw a priest wearing the very outfit I had beside me in my suitcase his black hair gathered in a short ponytail What’s it like to know that you can never marry or even date someone? To look at a solid argument against your God and say with absolute conviction My Greek grandmother was like that—kept a crucifix the size of a hand mirror in her bedroom and kissed it until her lips wore the plating off Jesus’ stomach even though she didn’t understand what he was saying crossing herself whenever we passed a church Tie two sticks together and her eyes would water I wanted to tell the priest at the airport that I had just met his boss that I’d shaken his hand and been given a rosary in a leather pouch I then wanted to ask what he was wearing beneath his cassock—underwear and a T-shirt A long-ago crime, suddenly remembered A limousine driver watches her passengers transform The day Muhammad Ali punched me What is it like to be keenly intelligent but deeply alienated from simple emotions? Spring has officially sprung down in Koskinen Stadium The sun stayed out long enough to light the matchup between Cal and No But spring is not the only thing that has sprung The Blue Devils sprung into action to secure an impressive 13-4 win over Cal Friday evening.  Head coach Kirsten Kimel called it a “Great defensive effort from our team.” The first goal was scored by Golden Bear Ashleigh Masterson in a direct faceoff between her and Duke keeper Kennedy Everson Although the Blue Devils looked to score to match Cal’s fierce offense it seemed as if they needed a key to break through Golden Bear defense “We haven't played against a lot of man-to-man defenses and I think that showed on our offense,” Kimel said 3-2 in the ACC) began their blossoming as Eva Pronti showed clear energy and persistence to find an opening lane in Cal's defense Pronti tried to enter from the left side of the crease Pronti put herself in the middle of the crease This time she was able to successfully receive an assist from Bella Goodwin to score Duke’s first goal of the game “Our offense was a little stagnant but we got better as the game went on,” Kimel said.  Keeping with the confidence gained from her first goal Pronti looked for another window in which to score this time finding Callie Hem to cut to the goal and propel the ball to the back of Cal’s net Pronti is currently ranked 4th in ACC assists per game the Blue Devils switched it up from the start of the game and decided to take the liberty of scoring the first goal of the period notching her 30th goal of the season.  Duke experienced a scoring drought for a few minutes as Bella Goodwin’s shot on goal was the closest the home team got Hem ended the drought and secured a hat trick off of an assist from Mattie Shearer The Blue Devils entered the second half up 5-3 An early save by Duke keeper Kennedy Everson — her ninth of the game — preserved the lead Everson set the tone for the third period: Duke was dominating Attackers Caitlin Barett and Maddie MacDonald stepped up to each score a goal for the Blue Devils Both capitalized on an  open window as an opportunity to drive to the center of the goal and score This was Barrett's sixth goal of the season and MacDonald's seventh.  Cal’s defense looked weaker in the third period — or maybe Duke figured out how to seep into its defensive wall Goodwin scored her 28th goal of the season with 4:50 left in the third quarter in possession in the final minute of the period Mabel Overbeck and Sydney Smith tried to stop any progress Cal attackers made towards the net Cal player Emily Moes found an opening in the left side of the net closing the gap to an 8-4 Duke lead.  Duke’s defense completely shut out Cal from scoring freshman Mabel Overbeck sprung into action for her first career goal native capitalized on a weak opening in the Cal defense and drove to the goal Fellow Long Island native Ava Biacardi took notes from her hometown teammate and notched not one but two goals for herself in a span of less than a minute The home team secured Kimel’s 357th win Friday evening in Koskinen Stadium Duke will look for her 358th against East Carolina Tuesday at 5 p.m. Share and discuss “Behind Hem's hat trick 13 Duke women's lacrosse vanquishes Cal in Koskinen Stadium” on social media A community celebrating Black voices Beautycon is a global platform that brings together beauty enthusiasts and industry leaders to explore the latest trends and conversations shaping the future of beauty Arket's new spring top ticks off two key trends of the season: cinched waists and blouse details Arket's attention to detail is what consistently allows the high street brand to make pieces that look so premium The first thing that drew me in was the pintuck bodice details that create the waisted shape but the brand takes the piece to greater heights with wider straps and the playful bubble hem that fully accentuates the fitted waist Personally, I'm always a little apprehensive when I see a button-front top, but the placement ensures that you won't see those peaks of skin between the closures. The look catches my eye because it’s the kind of outfit I so clearly remember wearing in the early 2000s. Then, I was too young to pull it off (but she’s in her early 20s and is also cool). The jeans are loose through the leg and she’s wearing them so long they almost cover her trainers. As she explains what she wants to the post office assistant she hooks her right foot behind her left. Since her heel is raised I can see the bottom of her jeans has actually slipped beneath the sole of her shoe and the hem is starting to fray from being repeatedly stepped on. flared pants are back in fashion in a way they haven’t been since the early aughts This week three experts explain how to achieve the look you want without damaging your trousers underfoot A real drag: overlong hems will put your trousers at risk Photograph: Christian Vierig/Getty Images“I feel sick if a trouser length is dragging on the ground because it damages the cloth,” says Emily Nolan the Melbourne-based tailor recommends getting trousers professionally hemmed to be as long as possible when you’re wearing your flattest shoes “I figure that if the trouser looks great with my lowest sole then when I put on a sneaker or a slight heel or boot they look even cleaner in the leg line,” she says If the shoe fits: when you bring your pants to the tailor Photograph: Jeremy Moeller/Getty ImagesIf you are only planning to wear a pair of pants with certain shoes alterations and customisation specialist Kiaya Garbutt-Daniels tells her clients at Soraya Tailoring in Sydney to consider this ahead of their appointment “It really comes down to planning out what shoes will work with your longer-length trousers and making sure you stick with those.” Since the current trend is for long trousers that buckle and break over the shoe it’s important to clearly communicate this to your tailor “Try on your trousers at the tailors for them to pin on you and explain verbally or show them a photo of the look you’re after so that the tailor clearly understands that you want a longer length,” says Garbutt-Daniels “Make sure you’re happy with the pinned length before taking off the trousers.” If you’re game to try hemming trousers yourself, Andrea Cheong, an author and sustainable shopping expert, suggests using a blind hem stitch “It is the most chic and invisible type of hem in the sense that unless there’s significant bulk you don’t actually need to cut the fabric,” she says Rise above: long provided the hem doesn’t drag on the ground Photograph: Raimonda Kulikauskiene/Getty ImagesA blind hem can be done by hand It is a technique that uses an uneven stitch length that is very short on the outside of the hem and much longer on the inside make sure to use a thimble while you sew because you will need to use a fair bit of force to push the needle through and you don’t want to end up with blood on your jeans Start by folding or cuffing the trouser leg to the length you want then take off the trousers and iron the hem into place thread your needle in a similar colour to the fabric and work a blind stitch around the top of the cuff keeping a little bit of slack in the thread “Our advice would be to watch a tutorial in full before starting anything to see if you feel comfortable with all steps,” says Garbutt-Daniels She also adds the mantra all sewers (and carpenters) live by: “Measure twice But this is just a temporary fix that won’t hold for more than a few wears so I definitely still recommend the blind hem method.” “If the hem has been damaged with wear and tear “They can be shortened to bring them back to a wearable state.” This is done by either cutting off the damaged section or hiding it within the folds of a shortened hem we would also add fusing and topstitching to the area to prevent the damage from getting any worse,” says Garbutt-Daniels 09-18-2024DESIGN Furniture brand Hem is bringing it back to life [Photo: Courtesy of Hem] BY Elissaveta M. Brandon the legendary Finnish designer Yrjö Kukkapuro designed the Experiment Chair But instead of a single version of the chair each with a differently shaped armrest and in a different color which the designer later described as “decorative functionalism,” the chair went on to symbolize the postmodernist defiance of the ‘80s The chair has been out of production for 30 years a version of it can be yours for $1,899—thanks to Swedish furniture brand Hem The new Experiment Chair has the same squiggly armrests as the original and comes in the same red plus the obligatory shade of black that was added by Hem The brand made the chair slightly wider and taller than its 1980s counterpart (because people today are bigger) and slightly sturdier (because requirements are more stringent) who is 91 years old and living in Helsinki and collaborated with Hem to bring his chair back to life The Experiment Chair marks a significant evolution in Hem’s business model has favored designs by contemporary designers like Faye Toogood the idea was to champion everything that we love but add a layer of a new generation,” says founder and CEO Petrus Palmér Palmér was interested in challenging the norm and being progressive But the company is now approaching its 10-year anniversary and Palmér now understands that it is impossible to be a progressive design company without also looking back Hem reissued the Fars Glas—a wine glass with a delightfully chunky stem—by the Swedish glass artist Erik Höglund and Palmér is thinking about reviving another Kukkapuro chair next But he says the brand’s strategy isn’t yet set in stone “It’s impossible not to regard the shoulders of the giants we stand on,” he says the designer was so prolific that most Finns have sat on one of his chairs at some point His Experiment Chair was of part of a bigger series of birch plywood and steel chairs the designer says he designed this collection over the summer of 1982—“to please my own artistic mind”—then started making prototypes as soon as he returned to Helsinki from his summer cottage “I thought it was hilarious when this collection became a success,” he says noting that the chair went on to be sold to banks Kukkapuro says he is “a bit sentimental“ at the thought of his chair coming back to life after so many years “Sometimes I think that it’s not a designer’s job to bring old models or works back to life,” he says “But if new generations find my works again I have always felt that the Experiment series has potential to be a benchmark from the eighties.” He may have been right. A vintage Experiment Chair with black leather upholstery and green armrests is currently going for $7,599 on the luxury design marketplace 1st Dibs Palmér spent some time scouting marketplaces and auction houses to get a sense of how popular the chair was he says his gut and that of his team prevailed “They sell for high prices at auction houses Hem’s Experiment Chair was made with modern manufacturing techniques It comes in flat-pack form and allows users to mix and match colors and textiles It was also reinforced with meticulously located yet discrete steel plates designed to prolong its life “We can probably have a night-long discussion with a vintage dealer about that and end up losing,” says Palmér with a laugh the Experiment Chair remains a symbol of design rebellion and it’s the reason Palmér was enamored with it in the first place “It is a very progressive idea and that’s what caught our eye and made us realize that even though it’s 40 years old it’s still highly relevant and highly progressive and still challenging,” he says “People look at that chair and they have to have an opinion.” Opinions, however, come in all sorts of flavors. If you hate something, you won’t buy it, but Palmér believes that taking risks is the only way we will avoid getting lost in an infinity room of look-alike chairs “It’s part of being progressive and being bold and being a trailblazer You have to accept some things will be widely successful whereas others won’t,” he says otherwise you end up putting out what everybody else is putting out.” The final deadline for Fast Company’s Brands That Matter Awards is Friday, May 30, at 11:59 p.m. PT. Community Work and Leadership Roles in Business School: While I am still in the early stages of my MBA program I’ve had the honor of representing UT Dallas at the 2024 Global Case Competition (GCC) Our team is one of the few teams that has advanced to the final round in recognition of my academic achievements and dedication to student leadership I was nominated by the Assistant Dean to a select group of contenders on track to completing the preliminary requirements for the prestigious NASH Leadership Award in Spring 2024 I am one of three senior leaders in the Dean’s Council representing the Alumni Relations department My time with the Dean’s Council has been fulfilling offering me opportunities to collaborate with peers and faculty members and to contribute to the strategic direction and decision-making processes within our academic community is evident through my involvement with the S.R a non-profit set up by my family in memory of my grandfather It functions as a center under the Institute of Social Action and Research (ISAR) and is focused on empowering and educating marginalized and underserved women alongside providing holistic support to kids aged 12 and above who are not or have never been enrolled in school I take great pride in the SRT Learning Center and look to build on my family’s efforts in this initiative these experiences have not only fostered my personal and professional growth but also enabled me to make meaningful contributions to the welfare of the Dallas and international community Which academic or extracurricular achievement are you most proud of during business school but I would like to acknowledge the impact that volunteering with the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) has had on me My commitment to addressing food insecurity led me to volunteer at the NTFB where I worked as a rover volunteer in different roles on the assembly line The magnitude of the operations at NTFB was staggering; during a typical three-hour shift our team of 15 processed a whopping 24,000 pounds of food This hands-on involvement allowed me to witness firsthand the significant impact targeted programs had in supporting vulnerable groups such as seniors I gained insights into how the provision of healthy food options in the hampers positively affects the health baseline of the local community I developed a profound appreciation for the extensive scale of operations undertaken by organizations like NTFB to address this critical issue My next academic achievement that I am also proud of is maintaining a Perfect 4.0 GPA thus far reaffirming my confidence and trust in my capabilities What achievement are you most proud of in your professional career My growth trajectory during my time as a Business Systems Engineer at People Corporation has been one of the most significant milestones in my professional journey so far Even though I came from a non-technical background I was able to serve as the liaison between the technical and non-technical stakeholders by learning how to “translate” the business’ needs My role involved half a year of working as a senior account executive to fully understand the business model and then translating those learnings to the design and implementation of a robotic process automatic (RPA) solution The RPA solution aimed at alleviating the burden of repetitive data entry tasks of our sales executives allowing them more time to focus on negotiation and relationship-building The RPA design and implementation life cycle was complex and required ongoing communication with all departments coordination with all levels of leadership to ensure stakeholder buy-ins The most substantial impact it had on the bottom line of the organization was through expanding the capacity of every resource within the organization allowing the business to concentrate on growth and expansion I characterize them as a period of rapid expansion and development I was able to not only acquire new technical skills on the job but also enhance my strategic leadership style I am proud to have concluded this chapter by knowing that I have directly contributed towards enhancing the overall productivity and profitability of my organization I chose the University of Texas at Dallas’ Jindal School of Management primarily because of its intimate class size of 50 students or less This smaller cohort allows for a more personalized and immersive learning experience where I can actively engage with my peers and professors on a deeper level the school’s innovative two-mentor approach provides invaluable academic support and career resources through the MBA office ensuring that each student receives tailored guidance and mentorship to thrive academically and professionally This focus on individualized attention and mentorship was crucial for me as it aligns perfectly with my learning style and career aspirations ultimately making this business school the ideal choice for my MBA journey Choosing a favorite MBA professor is a difficult task given the caliber of educators at the UT Dallas MBA program Radhakrishnan is special because he invests in his students and goes the extra mile to ensure our success in and out of the classroom His encouragement has even led me to consider pursuing a Doctorate in Accounting Radhakrishnan’s dedication to his students and his value-added approach to education truly distinguishes him as an outstanding educator My favorite course so far has been FIN-6301 which focused on advanced analysis of topics in financial management including capital structure In addition to enhancing the professional skills required in the domain the course also provided transferable skills for personal financial literacy I created a financial model and successfully applied it to an in-depth analysis of a Fortune 500 company as a case study The case study was an interesting and informative exercise but my biggest takeaway from the course is the foundational knowledge and skillset to now build various financial models with increasing levels of complexity The model I created in class has now become the foundation for analysis of the companies in my personal stock portfolio such courses that provide knowledge for real-world application beyond the scope of the degree or a job are an indisputable value-add What was your favorite MBA event or tradition at your business school One of my favorite MBA traditions at our business school is the organic way in which the class comes together to celebrate holidays everyone was encouraged to share their traditions and customs It was heartwarming to see classmates from different backgrounds come together to learn about and celebrate each other’s cultures From decorating Christmas trees to lighting Diya’s from exchanging gifts to sharing traditional dishes these celebrations added a layer of fun and camaraderie to my MBA experience these inclusive holiday celebrations reflected the ethos of our business school It demonstrated that our school values the richness that comes from different perspectives and backgrounds and emphasizes investing in people and relationships This inclusive approach not only enhances the MBA experience but also prepares us to thrive in diverse and global business environments What did you love most about your business school’s town I must admit that one of my favorite aspects of Dallas is undoubtedly its warm weather I had some reservations about transitioning from a city like Toronto to a smaller-sized town and I’ve grown to appreciate the calmer lifestyle and the cleaner suburban atmosphere Dallas has a unique charm that sets it apart from larger cities; it feels more open and inviting Contrary to common perceptions about smaller cities I’ve found Dallas to be remarkably welcoming to international students like myself my experience has been shaped by both the warm climate and the warm-hearted people of Dallas making it an incredibly enjoyable place to call home while pursuing my MBA and beyond What surprised you the most about business school What surprised me the most about business school was the strong emphasis on real-world application and holistic development where the focus was primarily on understanding concepts the MBA program encourages us to leverage our knowledge base and apply it to real-world scenarios Business school has provided a platform for practical learning and skill development I was amazed by how seamlessly we were able to manage our studies while actively participating in various extracurricular activities lead student organizations all while striving for academic excellence the individual I most admire is Jared Brooks Currently serving as the First Sergeant in the Texas Army National Guard with nearly 20 years of service Jared exhibits extraordinary leadership and people management skills that are clearly reflected within our MBA cohort What truly inspires me about Jared is his ability to expertly balance his commitments to his military career and family life as a devoted husband Observing his dedication and proficiency in navigating both his professional and academic responsibilities is truly remarkable and serves as a powerful example of his resilience Despite the multitude of responsibilities on his plate Jared consistently goes above and beyond to help others coupled with his remarkable ability to manage a wide array of duties makes him a profound source of inspiration for me What are the top two items on your professional bucket list The top item on my bucket list is to establish a foundation dedicated to the advancement of women and children an initiative deeply rooted in a legacy of philanthropy and empowerment that spans generations in my family My grandfather pioneered the introduction of computers to India in the 1960s and was one of the founding members of the Institute for Social Action and Research (ISAR) in 1991 This instilled in us a profound commitment to education and women’s empowerment and my goal is to expand on his legacy across the globe Another item on my bucket list is to become the CFO of a Fortune 500 company Buffet’s disciplined investment approach and unwavering integrity have been a constant source of inspiration for me His ability to stay true to his principles while achieving remarkable success in the world of finance motivates me to strive for excellence in all my endeavors My goal is not only to attain the position of CFO but also to serve as an inspiration to the next generation to come What made Shaivya such an invaluable addition to the Class of 2024 “Shaivya’s exceptional academic performance leadership and empathy have made him a great addition to our MBA Program leads initiatives promoting diversity and inclusion and participates in social impact projects Shaivya demonstrates the qualities of an exceptional MBA student – academic excellence and a commitment to making a positive impact I have no doubt that he will continue to inspire and lead in whatever path he chooses to pursue.” DON’T MISS: MBAS TO WATCH: CLASS OF 2024 Our Partner Sites: Poets&Quants for Execs | Poets&Quants for Startup: Harvard’s Office of Technology Development Paves the Way for Research Commercialization People’s Forum on Graduation Readiness Held After Vote to Eliminate MCAS 8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports Nearing the end of the team’s best season in 10 years the Harvard women’s lacrosse team is ready for the Ivy League tournament A major part of the Crimson’s success is its powerful offense as Harvard finished the season with the highest goals per game and percentage of converted shots in the Ivy League was awarded The Crimson’s title of Female Athlete of the Year “We're still kind of that program that's been up and coming And she's been one of the main catalysts for getting our program to where it is,” said Carole Kleinfelder Head Coach for Harvard Women’s Lacrosse Devon Wills Hem was an elite high school lacrosse player earning All-American and Academic All-American honors in 2018 while playing for Needham High School Hem has been an immediate asset for Wills and the Crimson upon first taking the field for Harvard but her path to success has been nontraditional as she encountered a number of challenges at the beginning of her collegiate career After recovering from an ACL tear that she suffered late in high school Hem was excited to start her contribution to collegiate lacrosse but she retore her ACL in her first semester on the team the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic kept her sidelined for an entire year But instead of becoming discouraged by all of her early setbacks “Having COVID just made me realize how much I miss playing,” Hem said Her coach underscored the difficulty of Hem’s path to recovery “Everybody's really admired her resilience in that area but was able to come back and be so successful,” Wills said As soon as she was finally able to compete for Harvard she proved herself as an incredible leader and athlete “The moment that she was cleared to play she's drawn the top defender from every team “She’s really shouldered the burden of drawing that top defender from every team Despite facing difficult one-on-one matchups Hem still recorded a total of 44 points (34 goals and 10 assists) in her first season She finished as the highest scorer on the team and was selected as a first-team All-Ivy player She recorded an impressive 59 points (43 goals and 16 assists) and was again selected as a first-team All-Ivy player in 2023 has just gotten better and better throughout her time here She's great at implementing whatever you say She's really good at seeing it and going to do it,” Wills commented This progress has only continued into her senior year Hem improved again on her previous season’s goals and points Hem started her senior season on a strong note with a career-high seven goals against Colgate on February 17 She continued her scoring prowess in the next two games pouring in five more against Georgetown on February 24 and then set a new career mark with eight goals against Virginia Commonwealth University the following day including the game-winner late in the fourth quarter After coming back from a 16-11 deficit in the fourth quarter Harvard found itself tied with Brown 17-17 with 30 seconds remaining making a last-second adjustment to score the game-winner and give the Crimson its first lead of the entire game We expected the Brown defense to come out in one thing and they didn't and Callie cut and scored,” Wills explained “I think it showed how hard we had played and how much we believed the entire game that we could win and it accumulated there at the end,” Hem said Hem was added to the Tewaaraton Watch List given to the top player in college lacrosse The top 75 collegiate players are placed on a watch list before it is narrowed down to the top female and male lacrosse players in the country making this list is a huge honor and recognition for a player “I think sometimes the Ivy League doesn't get as much respect,” Wills said to finally have her get that recognition for four years of hard work I think that was really important to us But I also think that was just our team had a really strong start in the beginning of the season and I think we just had a lot of momentum and there was some outside recognition from that,” Hem reflected “I think it's also like a team recognition because they go against her every day in practice as much as it's an individual award,” Wills added Harvard was dealt its first loss from a physical Duke team in a close 15-13 game Instead of backing down from the physicality Hem used the chance to show how her confidence has grown over the years and used it to fuel her “They were specifically very physical with her And she took their physicality and just turned and put it right back up on the scoreboard against them,” Wills said Throughout the season Hem has continued to prove her incredible offensive capabilities And she realizes that nobody can really mark her,” Wills stated but she has also grown into a crucial behind-the-scenes leader off the field She's got a lot of really good things to say but she focuses more on that one-on-one connection But I think that's where she's been able to connect with a lot of different people on our team,” Wills said As Harvard prepares for its upcoming game against No Hem is focused on winning an Ivy League title while simultaneously getting the most out of her remaining time with the team to not have any regrets,” Hem said about her goals for this year So just enjoy every moment and play as hard as I can.” Hem has made her mark on Harvard Women’s Lacrosse as an incredible offensive power on the field while remaining humble Hem isn’t sure what’s next for her in life but she is confident that she will continue to be involved in the sport somehow ”It's been one of the best experiences of my life I will always look back on it with a ton of positivity and just gratitude for everything that I was able to experience here.” —Staff writer Luke Lawson can be Be one of the first to try our new activity feed It’s the first time an American or Chinese runner has won the prestigious 57K trail race that serves as a de facto global trail running championship Eli Hemming said his primary focus was charging up and over the La Flégère ski resort on the last climb of the Orsières-Champex-Lac-Chamonix (OCC) race at the UTMB World Series Finals to then break the finish line tape in Chamonix he became the first American ever to win the prestigious race that serves as the de facto global championship at the shorter ultra distances and Hemming had to turn himself inside out to get the win both because of the 11,500 feet of elevation gain and descent but also because of the strong field of international runners and hot humid weather with sunny skies soaring into the 80s under the early afternoon sun Check out our UTMB Hub for profiles and much more from our team that was on the ground in Chamonix but he didn’t feel compelled to challenge for the lead up the first two climbs over the first 9 miles That’s because fellow American Christian Allen was absolutely flying off the front surged to the lead from the gun and led by more than 2 minutes through the 15-mile mark as he passed through Swiss the village of Trient But that’s where the runners faced the toughest test of the race 2,300-foot technical climb to the Chalet des Grands before continuing upward on slightly less steep terrain to the Col de Balme mountain pass it’s a 3,000-foot ascent over about 6 miles to the 7,200-foot high point on the course Hemming surged up the big climb as several other speedy runners gave chase including Swiss runner Remi Bonnet who is known for his uphill running abilities But Hemming had been waiting for this all year and specifically trained on long mountain ascents near Breckenridge He continued to surge across the Swiss-French border and up to the pass building a nearly 7-minute lead over Spanish runner Antonio Martinez Perez Hemming extended his lead to 10 minutes on the 7-mile 3,000-foot descent to the French village of Argentière 2,000-foot technical grind to 6,200 feet atop the ski resort—he was anything but home free and even stopped at one point midway through the climb bent over and rested his hands on his knees but eventually gathered himself and started running slowly up the hill again RELATED: What is UTMB Mont-Blanc All About Anyway? Perez had been charging up the mountain behind him and there was a brief moment where it looked like Hemming’s lead might be in jeopardy But he managed to reach the final checkpoint at the 50K La Flégère aid station in first and immediately looked better as he began the 4-mile descent down to Chamonix and was caught by Italian runner Francesco Puppi before reaching the ski resort aid station After a cordial acknowledgement as he passed Puppi suddenly had a new spring in his step He surged up the final 200 meters to reach the checkpoint about 4 minutes after Hemming then began bombing down the rocky running smoothly albeit without the intensity of a couple hours earlier What had been a 10-minute lead at the 28.2-mile mark had greatly diminished with less than 3 miles to go Hemming was one step closer to his year-long goal of winning OCC and he wasn’t going to let it slip away When he reached the edge of the Chamonix pedestrian village he was quickly re-energized by the throngs of cheering spectators and increased his pace briefly as he dashed through the winding 200-meter section before slowly slightly on the final blue-carpeted approach to the finish line “I was trying to pace it as well as I could and I knew if I made it over Col de Balme with a good gap unless I blow up—which I did a little bit—I knew I could hold up pretty well to the end,” Hemming said I knew I had about a 10-minute lead at Argentière but I was very much overheated and the walls started closing in a bit I tried to take a little time to cool down but I knew I had to keep moving and just make it to the top.” Puppi dashed through the village three minutes later to finish second in 5:14:46 was the second American runner in the men’s race The victory is the first big international win for Hemming who transitioned into trail running  in 2021 after several years as a professional triathlete Hemming has won several domestic 50K races in the US including the Canyons Endurance Runs 50K on April 26 in Auburn he placed second to Bonnet in the Mont-Blanc Marathon and also finished fifth in the Golden Trail World Series Final 20K championship in Noli turned in his best race since coming back from an extended U.S He handily won the Chuckanut 50K in Bellingham and the Lake Sonoma 100K in California in April but then struggled with fatigue for a month after returning to Europe He placed eighth in the Mont-Blanc Marathon and 15th at the Sierre-Zinal 31K two weeks ago in Switzerland This was his second year in a row taking second at OCC “I don’t think I have the energy to process what I just did right now,” Puppi said “I am continually impressed by the suffering of endurance racing going like this and with what all the athletes that ran with me did today I just try to be my best every time I race I’m happy I gave my 100 percent and that’s what matters.” might be on the verge of one of the best trail running stories of the year They decided to part ways with sponsor Salomon and sign with the Adidas-Terrex team at the start of the year While they both raced well early in the season—Tabor took third at the Canyons 50K in April and third at the Broken Arrow Skyrace 25K in June—they opted not to race as much this year as they’ve been known to They also decided not to join their new teammates at an extended Chamonix training camp in late July and instead stay home and train at high-altitude in central Colorado Knowing what they’d be facing on the course they sought out long climbs near Breckenridge and Frisco that topped out between 12,000 and 13,000 feet—including Wheeler Pass between Copper Mountain ski resort and the community of Blue River “We knew we could get quality training at home so we were happy to stay at home and run the places we know best.” Austria and more recently took second in the 20K mountain running race at the European Championships and first at the Mont-Blanc Marathon in early July and Yao through the initial 4.5-mile climb to Champex then expanded her lead to the top of the second climb at the 6,200-foot summit of La Giete as Yao and Alonso maneuvered into the second and third spots But following a similar strategy as her husband Tabor took the lead on the long downhill into Trient and began to surge on the technical climb up to Chalet des Grands with Yao Hemming ran in the lead for part of the climb Wyder and Yao overtook her and those two separated from the rest of the field They dueled back and forth but Yao took the lead over Col de Balme and would never relinquish it She seemed to get stronger as the race went on and she extended the gap on Wyder to 4 minutes at La Flégère ski resort Yao cruised into Chamonix to secure the first win by a Chinese athlete at OCC in 5:54:03 With a 2018 CCC win already under her belt she also enters the rarified air of having two UTMB World Series Finals championship titles to her name who was third in the OCC in 2022 and dropped out last year ran a strong second half to finish sixth as the top American in 6:06:59 Tabor Hemming continued up and over Col de Balme but slowed significantly and eventually dropped out at Argentière It was really fun out there to It may not be easy for the general population to wrap the cuff properly around the arm, the direction and position of the cuff, and the extent of the wrapping influence the BP readings.1 HEM-1026 can easily measure BP by inserting the arm into a cylinder that encapsulates the cuff of the device and the positioning of the arm and wrapping of the cuff are arranged all by itself This device is recommended for home use in the general population at home the performance of Omron HEM-1026 was validated according to the latest protocol (ISO 81060–2:2018+Amd 1:2020) Figure 1 The Omron HEM-1026 (HCR-1901T2/HCR-1902T2) The manufacturer provided standard production device models. The validation team consisted of three observers with experience in BP measurement. They were trained using the British and Irish Hypertension Society’s online program.9 BP was measured following the Korotkoff method using a mercury sphygmomanometer (ACOMA Medical Industry Co. Simultaneous auscultation was performed by two observers using a double stethoscope (Y-tube) while performing measurements following the Korotkoff method The two observers were blinded to each other’s readings and a third observer served as a supervisor to verify their BP readings of the two observers All individuals participated in the study voluntarily and all procedures complied with the requirements of ISO 14155:2011 This study was performed in accordance with the ethical standards of Declaration of Helsinki and its amendments and was approved by the Institutional Review Boards of Biwako Yoikuin Hospital and Omron Healthcare Co. and written informed consent was obtained from each participant The study was performed in the measurement room of Omron Healthcare Co. by the staff employed by Omron Healthcare Co. 101 participants were included in the study participants were screened to ensure that their sex and BP readings fulfilled the participation requirements described in the protocols those who moved their arms or bodies during BP measurements and those with unclear DBP readings during Phase V of Korotkoff sounds were excluded from the study The device was calibrated with the mercury sphygmomanometer before the entry of the study Data analysis was performed according to the ISO requirements Data are expressed as mean ± standard deviation (SD) and the minimum and maximum values with ranges were calculated The mean of each measurement pair before and after the BP measurement with the test device was used as a reference value The difference between the mean observer and test values was calculated according to the protocols and presented in Bland-Altman plots against the mean between the two values Table 2 Baseline Characteristics of the Subjects Using the standard mercury sphygmomanometer the mean value of the 276 measurements were 126.0±24.4 (range 77.8–202.5) for SBP and 77.0±13.9 (range Figure 2 The upper panels depict the Bland-Altman plots of the differences between the Omron HEM-1026 (HCR-1901T2/HCR-1902T2) readings and the observer measurements for (A) systolic blood pressure (SBP) and (B) diastolic blood pressure (DBP) The lower panels are scattergrams showing the relationship between arm circumference and differences between Omron HEM-1026 (HCR-1901T2/HCR-1902T2) readings and observer measurements for (C) systolic blood pressure (SBP) and (D) diastolic blood pressure (DBP) As the measured BP may be influenced by the activities before measurement studies including these populations and conditions need to be further researched post-market surveillance of performances of the same device should also be conducted this study was performed with employees of the Omron Health Care Co Although it was done fairly and independently from the company with supervision from Dr it is desirable that it be repeated with uninterested parties The results of this study showed that Omron HEM-1026 (HCR-1901T2 / HCR-1902T2) meets the requirements of the ISO 81060–2:2018+Amd 1:2020 protocol and can measure BP accurately in the general population with arm circumference of 17–32 cm The authors would like to thank the participants that volunteered their time to participate for the study to measure BP with sphygmomanometer for the provision of the standard BP monitors used in this study Shingo Yamashita and Nobuki Yakura are employees of the Omron Health Care Co The authors report no other conflicts of interest in this work 1. (Read more about GQ's testing process here.) The difference is so subtle that it’s almost not worth mentioning but the main difference between sweatpants and joggers boils down to silhouette and fabric Sweatpants are usually made of heavier-weight knit material like fleece or French terry and tend to come in a baggy or relaxed fit Warmer sweatpants will not only use thicker fleece but will also have a brushed interior to add insulation and a soft hand but a tiny bit of stretch will go a long way if comfort is a top priority.) Joggers, on the other hand, are more likely to be made of thinner, lightweight materials with a slim fit and tapered leg. That said, many of today's sweatpants feature both a traditionally heavier fleece fabric with a tapered leg, making the distinction between the two increasingly hazy. For more intel, check out our guide to the best joggers for men Sweatpants come in a variety of fabrics like hoodies and pullover sweatshirts “or poly blends with over 70% cotton in the blend Oftentimes polyester is used to alter the feel and prevent shrinking which I don’t mind.” For the nitty gritty Streeks says heavyweight fabrics range from 350-550 GSM (Grams per Square Meter) Fleece: If you imagine a Patagonia fleece jacket you're not far off from what sweatpant fleece is Fleece is made by knitting fabric to have the fibers stand up Those raised fibers are then shorn and brushed to produce a fuzzy texture which is super soft and warm French Terry: Similar to fleece, French Terry features raised yarns which resemble loops—this is the same stuff bath towels are made of These loops help to absorb moisture which made them great for soaking up sweat during a workout (remember that epic scene from Rocky II?) the loops help trap heat and insulate you from the cold French Terry most often is made from cotton as opposed to fleece which is more commonly made of synthetic materials like polyester French Terry can come in both brushed and un-brushed forms Photographs by Bowen FernieGrooming by Melissa DeZarate for A-Frame AgencySpecial thanks to Trinity Boxing Club, New York Sevigny fit in perfectly with the black-and-white theme opting for a puffy little white dress from Renaissance Renaissance's 2024 collection accessorized with a black hair ribbon This relatively simple outfit combines pieces of the coquettish and baby-doll aesthetics with a trend we did not think would ever return: the bubble hem Love it or hate it, bubble hemlines were everywhere in the early 2000s.
