(WLUC) - People crowded Marquette’s Presque Isle Park on Sunday to enjoy the now-open loop
The loop opened for traffic on Friday for the season
Families and friends made the most of the sunny weather by visiting Black Rocks
Beth Buyze and Maddy Quinn say the Presque Isle loop gave easy access to the best agate-hunting grounds
They say the area is beautiful and abundant with their favorite rock
Buyze says they love sitting in the sun and digging for agate
and I was asking Maddy if she wanted to hang out,” Buyze said
“I was just killing time before she could answer and saw that the loop was open
and I instantly turned around and went to her apartment because I wanted to drive through it together.”
She says the loop opens opportunities to kayak

TT’s newest winner felt underrated going into 2024
2025 Isle of Man TT © Isle of Man TT Davey Todd admits not being factored alongside the Isle of Man TT’s ‘big three’ names prior to the 2024 event “fired me up” to take his maiden wins
The English rider made his TT debut in 2018 and quickly established himself as a name to watch out for with his speed
a switch from Padgetts Honda to TAS Racing BMW for 2024 helped propel him to his first wins
He took a maiden victory in the Superstock TT
before capping off race week with a stunning ride in the Senior to tally up his second win and a first for TAS in the class since 2004
Peter Hickman and Dean Harrison were positioned as the event’s ‘big three’ names given their recent winning records - something Todd admits sat in his mind
a lot of things contributed to it,” he said during the TT Live podcast
“2023 wasn’t the year that I wanted it to be
I ended up getting sick in race week and it wrote me off for like half the races
I was pretty fired up going into ’24 because of that reason
but in the back of my mind it did fire me up a little bit
“Every time I heard it it fired me up inside that everyone was talking about the big three and nobody even thought I could do it
“It felt to me if you were lucky you’d get a podium
I just wanted to prove that I can win races at the TT
Having put in some promising pace during practice week
Todd believes this started to change perceptions of where he was in the pecking order
“Probably before the end of practice week definitely a lot of people… not that I’d said anything,” he added
“But people came up to me and said ‘everyone is talking about the big three
maybe we should have called it the big four’
that little thought had already got stuck in my head
and your mindset is on what you’re doing and the racing and thinking about getting out there and trying to go as best you can
“Nobody is necessarily laying it all down in practice
so you can’t be too confident because you probably always leave a bit in there for the races
but trying to think does Pete have a bit more
You just have to get out there and do what you can do.”

Universal Destinations & Experiences filed a new trademark for the name “Isle of Curiosity.”
Universal filed the trademark on May 1 and it’s currently awaiting assignment
Universal makes no claim to any particular font style
The trademark covers the following offerings:
and waterpark services; Entertainment services in the nature of amusement park
and waterpark attractions; Providing amusement arcade services; Entertainment services in the nature of providing interactive play areas for children and adults; Entertainment services
live appearances by costumed characters; Entertainment services in the nature of escape room attractions; Entertainment services
just because something is listed on a trademark
doesn’t mean the name will be used for that service
And someone trademarking a name or phrase doesn’t necessarily mean it will ever be used
Isle of Curiosity does lend itself to an area’s name — maybe a land at a new theme park
It could be for Universal Kids Resort, which has an island at its center according to concept art. Universal recently filed a trademark for Jurassic World: Cretaceous Coaster
Given the trademark was filed in the U.S., the name probably won’t be used at Universal Studios Great Britain. Universal did recently file a trademark for Halloween Horror Nights in the U.K
Also in the works right now is Universal Horror Unleashed in Las Vegas
but the land-locked warehouse experience probably won’t have any “Isles.”
“Isle of Curiosity” could also be for an experience at a pre-existing park
What do you think “Isle of Curiosity” means

City management can be a stressful type of sim
which means a popular category in that sphere ends up being town-building games that come across as more relaxed and cozy
but it’s also no big deal if you make some mistakes or prioritize aesthetics
It’s a serviceable sim that is quite casual
but it does end up being a complete sandbox and maybe not super memorable
The only goal is to place the buildings you earn and unlock and watch numbers go up
There’s no need to worry about population criteria or (major) resource requirements
You start a Classic or Sandbox run by picking a size space you want to inhabit and an environmental theme
Sandbox is a literal empty expanse that lets you do what you want
without worrying about hitting score milestones to enable growth or get new buildings to place
since there will be some resource elements to it and you need to be more aware of your overall “score” for your island.
you are given new buildings and items to place on the island or access to additional landmasses in this town-building simulation
as an easy example that isn’t any sort of spoiler
the first option in the tutorial comes up after placing the 10-point Town Center. Since you hit the 10-point milestone after that
it offers you a choice between three base five-point Houses and two base 14-point foragers or three houses and one 20-point farm
and you need to use the Town Center you have and the new buildings you picked to reach that tier.
Bonuses kick in based on placement due to buffs
placing multiple types of certain types of buildings near each other can decrease points
so you need to constantly be aware of what you have
Each building has a sphere of influence around it
UI will show noting how the score of it and buildings near where it might go change based on the buffs and debuffs
you need to sort of determine where you’d want commercial
You can only delete a building when you’re in Sandbox mode
As long as you play around with the choices
it’s pretty easy to reach them no matter which building reward you pick
If you’re in a Classic run and having trouble hitting some milestones
you can choose to save that island you’re working on one and reopen it in Sandbox
That way you can continue development just for fun
It really helped emphasize the idea that Tranquil Isle is indeed tranquil
and you can opt out of the more strict demands of the town-building game at any time
and the additional options for building designs typically only do something minor like offer a few different roof colors
Since the optimal way to play is zoomed out
you can see little people and animals wandering around
but it isn’t as graphically impressive or offer a style as unique as some similar simulations
Because of the design direction and general gameplay
I sort of felt like while I had a good time
I wasn’t as memorable as some similar town-building games I played
Tranquil Isle is enjoyable and can be a leisurely way to relax while developing an island
It’s a low-key town-building game for sure
It might not be as memorable and eye-catching as other titles in the genre
which I think will keep it from becoming a “classic.”
Tranquil Isle is available for PCs
Tranquil Isle is a lo-fi strategic townbuilder
Create cozy little settlements on the sun-kissed shores of your very own island paradise

Honda rider Dean Harrison reflects on TT 2024
2024 Isle of Man TT © Isle of Man TT Honda rider Dean Harrison says the competitive landscape at the Isle of Man TT now “makes life very difficult” as he gears up for his second year with Honda
Last year’s Isle of Man TT saw three different solo riders - Michael Dunlop
Peter Hickman and Davey Todd - take to the top step of the podium
while the likes of Harrison and Josh Brookes breached the rostrum in the big bike classes
Harrison is a three-time winner at the event and has been a regular frontrunner for years
positioning himself as one of the TT’s ‘big four’ names
he notes that competition is better than it has ever been and is only growing
“You look at the current crop of riders and the competition is probably as fast as it’s ever been
and there’s more people in a smaller space of time
which makes life very difficult,” he said during the TT Live podcast recording
Last year saw Harrison swap Kawasaki machinery for Honda bikes when he joined the works team for the brand alongside John McGuinness
The Honda team had a trouble-filled preparation for the TT
as delays in parts meant it didn’t have its full compliment of bikes for the North West 200 just weeks before the Isle of Man event
Harrison battled problems on his Honda Superbike during practice week at the TT
which meant he had to race it with a Superstock engine - likening this to bringing “a knife to a gun fight”
he came away from TT 2024 with four podiums
“I didn’t feel like I got the best out of the Superbike last year
with getting moved between classes and stuff like that
because we started the season quite fast on the Superbike at BSB level,” he said
“And then it sort of got switched because of parts and stuff
“The North West 200 unfortunately we only had one Superstock bike
there was a delay in parts getting the Suprsport and Superbike built
“We got to the TT and we had issues with the Superbike
“So we ran a Superstock engine in a Superbike chassis
which when you’re trying to compete against Pete [Hickman]
if you’ve not got the same speed and pace out of your bike as they do
if you have your bike and they have their bike
you feel sometimes you’re bringing a knife to a gun fight.”

The “Black Men Unite to Fight Against Our Women and Girls” campaign is being organized in response to recent cases of violent attacks on Black women
Minister Troy Muhammad is one of the organizers of the event. He says the Belle Isle Bridge was chosen as the campaign launch site in remembrance of Deletha Word
who was beaten by a man on the bridge after a traffic accident in 1995
Word died after either jumping from the bridge to flee the man or being thrown from the bridge
The group plans to offer conflict resolution and domestic violence prevention classes and produce billboards and public service announcements in the future
Each man in attendance will be asked to be responsible for five other men

as part of the second annual LENS Wild Child Triathlon—a celebration of fitness
fun and community spirit hosted by the Isle of Palms Law Enforcement Neighborhood Support (LENS) Foundation
Set against a backdrop of sunshine and sea breeze
the triathlon featured age-appropriate swimming
biking and running segments throughout the resort’s scenic core
Wild Dunes Resort and generous community members
the event highlighted the power of collaboration and the island’s commitment to youth wellness and safety
and the smiles on the kids’ faces made it worth getting up early on a Sunday!” said Isle of Palms Mayor Phillip Pounds
“This is a great community event where almost 100 kids participated—which means at least another 100-plus parents bringing their children—and countless organizers and volunteers that made this second annual Wild Child event another success!”
the Wild Child Triathlon is one of several LENS-led initiatives designed to promote education
Other programs hosted throughout the year include water and boating safety days
and hands-on crabbing and fishing events—all with the goal of strengthening the bond between residents and local first responders
“This event is about more than just the finish line,” said Carolyn Foti
empowering moments for kids and reminding us all how special our community is when we come together.”
While some participants pushed for a personal best
every child was met with applause and encouragement
overheard a group of girls pedaling side by side during the biking leg
one boy who missed a turn and detoured into a driveway laughed it off by announcing
“I’m not that great at turns!” From training wheels to finish-line sprints
every moment underscored the day’s playful
A special thank-you goes to the Isle of Palms Police Department
which helped keep the course secure and the kids safe as they swam

Scotch whisky and gin maker Isle of Harris Distillery will restructure its business after facing “challenging headwinds”
cutting jobs and production in the process
The distillery was established in 2015 and is one of the largest employers on the Isle of Harris in Scotland with 45 members of staff
the company confirmed it would implement a restructuring programme
following “challenging headwinds” in the spirits industry
managing director of Isle of Harris Distillery
said: “In a move to safeguard the future of our business
today we are introducing a restructuring programme
which will see reduced production and workforce at the distillery
“Much like our colleagues in the wider spirits industry
we are facing challenging headwinds that have led to some incredibly difficult decisions
“Following a number of cost-cutting measures
voluntary redundancy is being offered to staff in the first instance
with compulsory to follow thereafter if we do not fulfil our cost reduction target.”
The company did not disclose how many jobs would be affected as consultations are ongoing
the business will now move from two shifts a day to one in its distillation
Erlanger called the situation “deeply regrettable” and expressed his thanks to the team
particularly to those affected by the restructure
for their “dedication and contribution to the business”
He noted that the Isle of Harris Distillery has invested more than £20 million (US$26.7m) in the island’s economy
He added: “We remain true to our founding purpose as a sustainable
multi-generational firm built to support the community for many years to come
The regrettable measures now being taken are necessary to help fulfil that long-term vision.”
In 2022, Isle of Harris Distillers agreed a £10 million (US$12.46m) funding package from HSBC UK to expand globally
The distillery released its first single malt, The Hearach, in September 2023, followed by a second permanent expression a year later
Earlier this month, American single malt Westward Whiskey filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to restructure the business
after facing ‘significant liquidity challenges’
Many whisky distillers are scaling down production as supply has outpaced demand after years of growth and investment across the category
This month, Jameson maker Irish Distillers suspended production until summer
Meanwhile, Irish whiskey maker Tullamore recently confirmed it would pause production for three of its nine stills
with a further three to be paused at a later date
Isle of Harris is not the only distillery reducing its workforce
Denmark’s largest whisky maker, Stauning, recently cut approximately 25% of its workforce following Diageo’s exit from Distill Ventures
Green River Distilling, based in Owensboro, Kentucky, also laid off a quarter of its staff in April

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Police Department says a man was shot at Vacation Isle Park in Mission Bay Tuesday morning
a man armed with a gun shot another man in between the public bathrooms north of the parking lot in the 1400 block of Vacation Road around 11 a.m.; SDPD says a man has been detained

Bullet casings were located near the bathrooms
Several witnesses were asked to give statements to police
ABC 10News has sent a photojournalist to the area to gather more information

Nora Meijide-Gentry went to Rome in 2013 hoping to meet the new Pope Francis
This photo shows how close she was to the pontiff
Nora Meijide-Gentry finds herself just opposite a group of Argentines with their nation’s flag
Meijide-Gentry stepped on a beautiful silver cross
“This felt like God was telling me I was on the right path,” she said

Several readers told me they had met him or other popes
“I have visited the Vatican several times
I was in Rome and was determined to meet the new Holy Father
Meijide-Gentry was told by several staff people to go to a particular spot
She found herself near a group of Argentines waving their country’s flag
Minutes later Pope Francis passed in front of her slowly in his popemobile
It was just a moment and no words were spoken
but for Meijide-Gentry it was unforgettable
“It confirmed for me that spiritual energy is the most pure and powerful energy in the world
If we balance our human energy with spiritual energy
we would be able to live an ideal existence
It’s hard to explain in English,” she said
found a beautiful silver cross adorned with brilliant stones
“I couldn’t believe the blessing
This felt like God was telling me I was on the right path
I felt divine blessings from God and Pope Francis
“I am very proud of Pope Francis’ accomplishments and work for the betterment of the human race,” Meijide- Gentry said
but I feel that he chose his time on earth very carefully.”
“In November 1992 my wife and I and another couple were doing a grand tour of Rome
In Rome we stayed at the InterContinental Hotel
“I asked the hotel concierge if there were any ‘special tours’ of Rome or the Vatican available
I was advised by ‘Tony,’ the owner of the tour company
currency and lots of it in plain white envelopes
“Tony began the tour at the usual Rome sites about 10 a.m
He wanted to know our religious affiliation
“Our car turned into a private entrance to the Vatican
We met an elderly brother who had the keys to the Sistine Chapel
‘This is for the poor,’ as instructed by our tour leader
“As we approached the first of many members of the Swiss Guard
the brother waved at them with the back of his hand
and the guards withdrew and let our car through the gate
“It turned out that Pope John Paul II was on a trip away from Rome and would not be back for several weeks
This was the window of opportunity for the entrepreneurs of the Vatican to use their influence and make some quick cash from well-heeled visitors
“Tony gave the most amazing tour of the Vatican
Our black Mercedes parked in a private parking lot next to the popemobile
We were told it was reserved for the pope to practice his driving skills
“We entered the Sistine Chapel with nobody else in it
If you have ever been in the cattle call of the normal tours
“We then took a private elevator to the luxurious living quarters that popes have resided in for six centuries
Pope Francis famously eschewed these luxurious apartments for a much simpler apartment in another part of the Vatican
“We toured (Pope John Paul II’s) bedroom
“We were taken into his treasure room
which held all the gifts various heads of state and others had given popes over the past 500 years
We saw jewel- encrusted crosses that had never been seen by the public
“Another envelope is handed to a waiting brother
“We were then escorted down a ceremonial interior hall
and we opened the 14-foot glass doors of the central balcony overlooking St
This is the same balcony where the pope appears on Sundays and special occasions to speak and bless the thousands of faithful tourists below
filling the square for a glimpse of the pope
“The four of us stepped out on the balcony
not sure who was on this sacred balcony in the middle of the week
and our guides had a good laugh at our anxiety
“We returned down the pope’s private elevator to our waiting vehicle
the Swiss Guard gave us ‘stink eye,’ but our entrepreneurial brother said a few words in Italian to them and they backed away
“The two Catholics in the group felt like they should be going to confession immediately
The two Protestants were thrilled beyond belief and were shaking hands with everyone
Another envelope was given to our tour guide
and we were driven to the top of the Spanish Steps and our hotel main entrance
“It has taken almost 33 years to fully comprehend what we toured and saw
Most people think this is a whales tale and a made- up story
We have the pictures and a video from 1992 to prove it
and it appears we were at the right place at the right time back in 1992.”
“When I first traveled to Rome back in the 1970s
the Vatican was at the top of our sites to visit
and the temperatures in Rome were in the high 90s
when setting out for a day of (sightseeing)
I put on a pair of walking shorts and a polo shirt
Peter’s because of a dress code that banned shorts
my wife’s miniskirt was shorter than my walking shorts
I was approached by a sidewalk vendor (who) told me that if I rented one of his polyester ponchos
I was skeptical but it seemed worth the risk
“While the length of the poncho didn’t cover the length of my shorts … I was now allowed to enter
and he were in Italy in 1978 when Pope John Paul I died
“We were in the Vatican Square with an array of other folks when
white smoke from the chimney came up indicating selection of a new pope
“The biggest party we were ever part of was that night in the crowded streets and bars of Rome
Wine or beer in every bar was flowing freely

A beachfront home in Sea Isle City recently sold for a record $6.43 million
The 4,400-square-foot home off 76th Street was previously owned by Lancaster-area business owner Daryl Heller, whose ATM company, Paramount Management, collapsed in February
The sale was approved by a New Jersey judge earlier this month as part of his Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings

There are lots of things to dislike about Oblivion
Those things stop being issues—or at least recede way into the background—when you go to The Shivering Isles
In Why I Love
PC Gamer writers pick an aspect of PC gaming that they love and write about why it's brilliant
Jody appreciates Oblivion at its most twisted
There's a portal in Niben Bay that lets you escape the trad fantasy land of Cyrodiil
Bypass the guard telling you that only crazy people enter (and they come out even crazier)
and on the far side you'll find a humble waiting room with a ticking metronome and a flat-voiced man waiting at a table
Does his collar make his bald head look like it's emerging from a flower
but everything else about him and this room is profoundly ordinary
and in the tones of an officious immigration officer he tells you you're about to enter a place that's holy to Sheogorath
Then the walls dissolve into light and butterflies
which swarm past to reveal a landscape of giant mushrooms under clouds like dancing fireflies
Mania is a bright wonderland full of iridescent bug monsters whose blood will get you high
Dementia is a faded swamp full of glum people who would probably be better off drinking medicinal bug-juice
Prince Sheogorath is just as bipolar as his realm
his goofy ramblings usually ending with a grim threat
It's difficult to make a character in Oblivion who doesn't look like they've just been dug out of the ground
and Bethesda ran with that in creating the gurning stretch-faced goobers of The Shivering Isles

Michael Dunlop says organising his own team "like running a hotel"
Isle of Man TT 2024 © Isle of Man TT Michael Dunlop admits he is yet to finalise his bike plans for the 2025 Isle of Man TT and is “really up against it” with the event beginning this month
Dunlop made history last year when he became the most successful TT rider ever with 29 victories
to keep the record in the family 24 years after Joey Dunlop set it at 26 wins
With the TT beginning this month and the North West 200 taking place next week
Dunlop is yet to officially confirm what bikes he will be riding
he rode a BMW in the big big races and a Ducati Panigale V2 in the Supersport contests - tallying up wins on both machines
He has spent much of this year testing BMW Superbike machinery as he flirts a return to the marque’s bikes
as well as the Ducati for the Supersport class
On the TT’s top 20 seeded riders list for Supersport
though his bike for the Superbike/Superstock/Senior races wasn’t confirmed
he raced a Honda in the big bike races and a Yamaha in the Supersport class
During the TT’s live podcast recording at the weekend
Dunlop was asked if he had a machine yet for the big bike races
“Don’t get me wrong they’re [the mechanics] are under a bit of pressure because it’s hard
because obviously last year I was on a Honda stocker
“It’s very clear to be seen that I’ve been out on a BMW
When asked that it’s not definite that he will be on a BMW
There’s no real point asking me about motorbikes because it could be anything
Dunlop has had stints with factory teams at the TT
but in recent years he has run his own operation and worked on his own bikes
He admits doing so is “hard work” but it’s “normal” for him
“It’s hard because it’s for some people and it’s not for some people,” he said
You’re having to run so many different personalities
“You’re having to make everything work in the one thing
I went from running a team to building my own engines
not that it’s completely different because them boys still have engine builders and stuff
but at the same time I’m dodging around seeing where the finances are coming from
I’ve always been like that so for me it’s natural
Epic Universe’s How to Train Your Dragon-themed Isle of Berk may be the park’s surprise sleeper hit land thanks to a fun headline attraction
the land has stood out to many (including us) as being equally as good or possibly better than at least some of the park’s other offerings
we can envision some issues for the land once Epic Universe opens to the public proper on May 22nd
let’s analyze some of the elements that make the land so good
this family coaster is themed to being “a winged flying machine that launches aspiring Dragon Riders into the air
swooping and soaring and encountering Hiccup and Toothless along the way.”
Not only is this family coaster one of the best in any Orlando theme park
it also serves as the beating heart of the land
This coaster isn’t just stashed away at the back of the land like others
Universal Creative has channeled Disney’s iconic 1967 Tomorrowland and made the coaster an integral part of the landscape
and making things feel more “alive” to the point that even those who don’t ride it benefit from its presence
One of the land’s — and the overall park’s — highlights is meeting Hiccup and Toothless themselves
as we genuinely felt like we were talking to one of the iconic Vikings and his dragon pal
Hiccup’s mannerisms and even voice were spot on
while the masterful puppetry of Toothless really made it feel like the dragon had come to life
Toothless isn’t the only dragon in the land however
these creatures are seemingly around every turn
these creatures are simply part of the environment
giving the whole area a sense of lived in reality
and the Dragon Fire Chicken Spire Mac and Cheese Cone – – Isle of Berk *might* be the culinary highlight of Epic Universe
there are some potential negatives about the land that might become bigger issues when the park is open
Considering the massive amount of anticipation for Epic Universe
everything in the park is likely to have long lines once it opens to the public
lines have been long for both attractions and food in the land
the aforementioned meet & greet with Hiccup and Toothless has been quite high
While Universal’s theme park presentation has certainly evolved over the years
it’s still fair game to mention that the company has a history of cutting back on entertainment offerings once a land or park opens
one of the best parts of Isle of Berk is the lived in feel afforded by the land’s dragons
and if any of these elements were to be cut or toned down
the last thing isn’t directly the fault of the land itself
a live-action How to Train Your Dragon film is set to be released
it could potentially usurp the animated originals as the definitive look of the franchise
making the portal potentially feel out of date
Isle of Berk MAY be the best of Epic Universe’s portals
however there are definitely still some kinks left for Universal to work out

Archaeologists have uncovered ancient stone tools on the Isle of Skye that shed new light on Scotland’s oldest known human inhabitants
the tools come from the Late Upper Palaeolithic (LUP) and show early humans ventured far further north than previously believed
led by University of Glasgow Professor Karen Hardy and the late local archaeologist Martin Wildgoose
is the largest concentration of proof of the early presence of people along Scotland’s west coast
The study was published in The Journal of Quaternary Science in a paper titled At the far end of everything: A likely Ahrensburgian presence in the far north of the Isle of Skye
and Flinders University in Australia collaborated to reconstruct the ancient sea levels and landscape of the region
It was during the LUP period that western Scotland was largely recovering from the Younger Dryas (or Loch Lomond Stadial)
Nomadic hunter-gatherer tribes of likely northern European Ahrensburgian culture are believed to have traveled across the challenging journey through Doggerland
which is now submerged under the North Sea
to reach Britain and eventually the Isle of Skye
Professor Hardy called this migration “the ultimate adventure story,” explaining
where the western landscape was dramatically changing as glaciers melted and the land rebounded as it recovered from the weight of the ice.” She pointed to Glen Roy’s famous Parallel Roads as evidence of the dramatic transformations in geology these early inhabitants would have witnessed
the group skillfully used locally sourced stone to produce tools and wisely settled near coastal and riverine resources
They also valued natural resources such as ochre
which was greatly valued by ancient people
While direct evidence is sparse—areas like those on Skye have been found largely by chance—the article argues that the pattern of Ahrensburgian finds over areas like Tiree
and Islay indicates a larger population than previously assumed
While the original sites are now inaccessible
the ancient environment may still be imagined around sites like Sconser
where lower sea levels once connected islands like Raasay to Skye

Isle of Harris Distillery has initiated a restructuring programme that will include a reduction in both production levels and workforce at its distillery
managing director of the Scottish gin and whisky maker Simon Erlanger said the decision was being made “to safeguard the future of our business”
He added the move was “deeply regrettable”
Specific details regarding the number of job losses or the departments affected were not disclosed.

Lots of ice protected Presque Isle State Park's beaches this past winter but less funding could lead to reduced sand replenishment this coming summer
"It gives us a reprieve from that winter erosion."
Greene led the 2025 spring beach walk that brought members of the U.S
Army Corps of Engineers from Buffalo to Erie on April 24 to check the peninsula for erosion and determine where sand will need to be replaced
Representatives from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
Presque Isle Advisory Committee and local legislators also took part in the beach walk
Presque Isle typically receives $3 million annually for the sand replenishment project
with half coming from the state and the other half in federal funding
Greene said local officials won't know about any potential federal funding until mid-June
he said Pennsylvania was ready with its usual $1.5 million for the project
"Worst-case scenario will be half funding for nourishment coming from the commonwealth side," he said
the work begins in the spring to respond to erosion that occurred during winter
This wouldn't be the first year the federal money has come late or not at all
Due to a delay in the federal funding for 2022
sand work didn't get started until after Labor Day that year
Work in 2017 didn't start until August because confirmation of that year's $1.5 million in federal funding wasn't received until May
but some sand work was done with $1.5 million from the state and $500,000 left from previous projects
Getting to Presque Isle: Erie Port Authority strikes new water taxi deal. When does service start?
Greene said a deficit in sand replenishment one year isn't too bad
but officials will want to see full funding for the project restored going forward
Joining him on the walk were representatives from the offices of U.S
They said the Republican legislators were supportive of Presque Isle and aware of the funding issue
members of Congress representing the Erie area have banded together to send letters requesting federal funding for sand work at the park
The officials on the beach walk said no such letters had been sent yet this year
Movement of sand is not unexpected and unwelcome on the peninsula
Greene and other officials have said that the purpose of placing sand on beaches isn't to stop erosion but to allow the sand to move naturally through the system toward Gull Point on the park's eastern end
Groins installed along Lake Erie to the west block the natural movement of sand to the peninsula
which involves bringing new sand to the park and moving other sand around
has therefore become a necessary project for maintaining Presque Isle
Presque Isle's beaches have been in a better position recently than in prior years when Lake Erie water levels were reaching record high levels and a lack of winter ice was leaving the shore unprotected from waves
From the 2024 fall walk: A cold, icy winter would help Presque Isle's beaches
said the beaches were much better this year than some years in the past
During a pause in the spring walk to evaluate conditions at Beach 5
Cross said that some years there was no beach in front of the sea wall there due to winter erosion
there was a significant amount of sand there
the participants planned to walk to the park's Sunset Point and then continue on to Gull Point
they expected to find a number of tombolos
which are bars of sand and sediment that develop between beaches and breakwaters
That sand will eventually be relocated to places where erosion has occurred
Cross said having tombolos this year will be beneficial because it is cheaper to move that sand than to purchase and bring in new sand

Reports have raised concerns that Isle Royale’s main ferry may lack an engineering crew as the island’s opening day approaches
a 165-foot vessel operated by the National Park Service
typically ferries passengers and supplies between Houghton and the remote island park in a 6 1/2-hour journey
The National Parks Traveler reported Wednesday that the ferry's engineer and assistant engineer retired under a Trump administration buyout program and will continue receiving pay through September
while a hiring freeze prevents replacements
The Ranger III "cannot operate without a full U.S
a retired Isle Royale superintendent based in Houghton
the ferry plays a crucial role in park operations
brings in food supplies for staff and lodge guests
It also assists boaters by transporting visitor vessels
including those that have become disabled and need to return to the mainland
The National Park Service did experience layoffs and buyouts as part of the Trump administration's effort to reduce the federal workforce. In February, 1,000 employees were laid off, according to the National Parks Conservation Association
The Department of the Interior then authorized the hiring of 5,000 seasonal workers
More: When does Isle Royale National Park reopen? Here's what to know in Michigan
Isle Royale closes annually from Nov. 1 to April 15. The National Park Service's website still states that the island plans to reopen on April 16
The National Park Service’s Washington office
instead of addressing whether Ranger III has an engineering crew
said in a statement that the vessel is "currently in dock with snow and ice blocking the Keweenaw Waterway" and that the agency is "looking forward to the upcoming summer season and seeing visitors enjoy all the park offers."
we do not anticipate disruptions to the passenger season schedule
which starts on May 27," the statement continued
"The park is working to finalize scheduling for the first freight trip
which is currently scheduled for late April
We don't comment on specific staffing questions due to federal privacy law."
visitors can only reach the park by private boats or seaplanes
Ranger III reservations are available on NPS.gov. Instructions for making reservations online can be found here.
