Ambassadors to the North Atlantic Council visited France’s Istres strategic air base
alongside NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska
Participants received briefings on France’s nuclear deterrent from Commanders of the French Strategic Air Forces (FAS)
Strategic Oceanic Force (FOST) and Naval Nuclear Air Force (FANU)
The visit’s various steps showed the credibility of France’s airborne component
and that of its nuclear deterrent as a whole
At a time of unprecedented security challenges to the Alliance
Allies also discussed the strategic environment
through presentations from representatives of France’s Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Armed Forces
(Credits: Forces aériennes stratégiques)
This visit reaffirmed that nuclear deterrence is the cornerstone of Alliance security
The fundamental purpose of NATO’s nuclear capability is to preserve peace
The independent strategic nuclear forces of France have a deterrent role of their own and contribute significantly to the overall security of the Alliance
France’s separate centre of decision-making contributes to deterrence by complicating the calculations of potential adversaries

19-year-old Kaleb Istre of Jennings took his last breath on Sept
Istre was traveling on a bike Westbound on US 90
state troopers announced Istre's bike was struck from behind by the front of a Ram pick-up truck and ejected from the bike
Jayce Legros said he's still trying to wrap his head around his friend's sudden death
"I was on my way to Lake Charles and then I got a call," Legros said
"It was one of my other friends and they called me and they was like ‘Hey your friend Kaleb
Legros said losing his best friend since third grade
we went hunting together...he was at my house for the Fourth of July."
Nicole gifted him with her son's favorite hat
"It’s the only thing I really got left of him," Legros said
State police are still investigating what led to Kaleb's death and his mother is warning drivers to their part
by being vigilant and mindful of bicyclists
“We just really only want to lay our son to rest...and for the vehicles to be safer with bike riders; not everyone drives a vehicle in life," Nicole wrote in a statement to KATC

As our Rouge et Bleu get set to travel to Istres for Liqui Moly StarLigue Matchday 8
take a look back at the history linking the two teams
with shared players and memorable encounters
five players have worn the colours of Paris and Istres - five internationals
and all well-known names in France and beyond
After making his professional debut at Istres
the former centre-half moved to Paris in 2004
the French international experienced the early glories of the capital club
notably taking part in the 2007 Coupe de France triumph
the Parisiansclaimed the first major title in their history
the now-retired 46-year-old rubbed shoulders with Ibrahima Diaw
had two successful spells with Les Rouge et Bleu
As part of the rotation of captains within the capital club's new ambitious project
he added to his list of honours by winning Paris' first French league title
Another French champion in 2013 with Les Rouge et Bleu
Samuel Honrubia was a fixture at the capital club for four seasons
A French international who won numerous titles alongside former Parisians such as Thierry Omeyer
the former left winger decided to end his professional career at Istres between 2021 and 2023
Paris and Istres also share a history of great goalkeepers - namely Vincent Gérard and Yann Genty - two players whose careers continued to intertwine until the former's retirement in the summer
Vincent Gérard continued to progress at Istres between 2008 and 2010
where he won what is still to this day the only major trophy in the club's history: the 2009 Coupe de la Ligue
With a career and record of achievements that are well known
the 37-year-old established himself as one of the best in his position season after season
Named best goalkeeper at the Olympic Games
the World Championship and the European Championship
as well as best keeper in the French league on five occasions
Gérard took a well-deserved retirement this summer
for two seasons he formed a pair with Yann Genty
Former French international Genty's career is unlike any other
After moving to Istres between 2010 and 2012 to make up for the departure of Vincent Gérard
he continued his tour of France with each passing season
rising to be named the league's best goalkeeper in 2015 and 2019
the year in which he celebrated his first call-up to the France national team at the age of 37
He then formed a solid national-team partnership with Vincent Gérard before joining him in Paris from 2020
where he has been reunited with a certain Adama Keita
With the record against Istres largely in their favour
the capital club have recorded a number of notable victories against their Provençal counterparts
Les Rouge et Bleu recorded their biggest win against Istres (41-20) thanks to an imperious performance from Thierry Omeyer
Another record was broken when the two sides last met in March 2023
Luka Karabatic put in the best performance of his Liqui Moly StarLigue career
converting all nine of his attempts to lead Paris to another big win (42-30)

Paris Saint-Germain claimed a 30-34 win in their Liqui Moly StarLigue Matchday 8 clash away to Istres on Sunday
Une publication partagée par Paris Saint-Germain Handball (@psghhandofficiel)
A few days after coming out on top against Füchse Berlin (38-40)
Raul Gonzalez's men were right back on the road on Sunday
the Parisians have so far shown themselves to be serious and courageous
Co-leaders of their Champions League group
the capital club also headed into the match on top of the league standings thanks to a perfect winning record in their first seven games
Paris were therefore determined to continue their run against Istres
a newly-promoted side who have been impressing the rest of France at the start of this campaign
the capital club immediately got into their stride and made an early break
And it was no wonder: Andreas Palicka made his presence felt early by deflecting Torben Petersen's penalty (3': 0-2)
The Parisians took advantage of several losses of possession by Istres to open up the lead thanks to doubles from Yahia Omar and Kamil Syprzak (10': 2-6)
the home side's first time-out had a huge effect
the side from Provence levelled it up on the quarter-hour mark (16': 7-7)
Les Rouge et Bleu remained focused throughout the first half
but were hampered by the efficiency of Romain Mathias
David Balaguer and Elohim Prandi in quick succession
Istres were proving clinical in front of goal and duly took a three-point lead (24': 12-9)
buoyed by a fine double from Wallem Peleka and Elo's first goal of hte match
Les Rouge et Bleu put four unanswered goals past the Istrians and regained control of the match (27': 12-13)
the home side went into the locker room with a narrow lead
so everything remained to be done for our Parisians
who were clearly up against veyr worthy opponents (30': 16-15)

Les Rouge et Bleu got off to a flying start in the second half and immediately turned the match on its head
In addition to his role as an outstanding goal maker
Luc Steins demonstrated his scoring talents with an early hat-trick (33': 16-17)
taking his tally to nine saves as Paris took the lead (37': 17-19)
who had already impressed against Füchse Berlin on Thursday
was once again one of the main attacking threats for Les Rouge et Bleu (42': 18-22)
the Parisians looked to have taken a decisive lead in the match (45': 24-30)
they could do little about our Swedish goalkeeper
who by this point had 12 saves to his name (45': 24-29)
Paris took care of business in the final ten minutes
made the most of his chance and scored a hat-trick to round off a splendid second half for the capital club (56': 28-33)
Paris managed to find a way through to continue their unbeaten run in the Liqui Moly StarLigue and consolidate their position at the top (30-34)

Willamina the squirrel is pictured with Emily Istre at her Lafayette home
A photo of Willamina and Emily Istre can be seen in the squirrel's custom tree house
After finding strength from each other during the coronavirus shutdown
a Lafayette woman and an injured baby squirrel parted ways this week
Emily Istre took in the tiny squirrel on March 14
Her mother had found the baby squirrel all alone in her backyard and feared for its well-being because of wildlife in the area
who Istre affectionately nicknamed One-Eyed Willa
was severely dehydrated with a badly infected eye at the time
Istre estimates that the squirrel was about 3 weeks old
"I was fully prepared to lose her," Istre said
"I really didn't think she was going to make it
I just planned to feed her and make her super comfortable until she died
I didn't want her to die a brutal death in pain
It's learning how to just let go of someone or something
Istre said she tried to contact the state agency in March
long before the enforcement division got involved
Istre said she tried reaching out to people who rehabilitate squirrels in the area through a list on the Department of Wildlife & Fisheries website
She said she also reached out to the agency in the hopes of taking a training class to become one of the state's recognized rehabilitators since state law prohibits citizens from caring for wildlife such as squirrels
she learned the ropes of nursing a squirrel back to health online
"I don't believe in taking animals from the wild
plucking them from nests to domesticate them," Istre said
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries remains fully operational during COVID-19 restrictions
a wildlife biologist and permits coordinator for the agency
Collins said it is illegal for anybody to rehabilitate wildlife without first obtaining a permit through the agency
Others who encounter injured or orphaned wildlife should leave the animal alone and contact the agency for assistance
"Every year well-intentioned individuals intervene unnecessarily
removing what appears to be injured/orphaned wildlife," Collins wrote in an email to The Acadiana Advocate
finders misinterpret defense behaviors and what appears to be lack of parental care as injury or abandonment."
Collins did not comment specifically on Istre's situation or confirm if the woman had reached out to the agency
injured opossums and abandoned baby birds until she could rehome or release them back into the wild
She'd never cared for a squirrel before Willamina
I don't want people to think this is a normal thing or something to aspire to."
and she became stronger with each bottle feeding
the squirrel was transitioning to solid foods such as kale
She was rewarded for meeting milestones with treats of sunflower seeds and walnuts
Even with a custom tree house made of natural wood and a deer antler for teething
Willamina would nestle into bed with Istre in the middle of the night
The squirrel would zoom across Istre's body during her yoga sessions and become anxious if they were separated for any length of time
Istre had to keep her cat separated from Willamina not only to keep her safe but also to reinforce a fear of cats for the day the squirrel could one day be released outside
Istre feared Willamina wouldn't survive outside
Istre said the squirrel might be able to survive with limited sight in one eye but also worries the squirrel might not make it after becoming so domesticated after more than five weeks together
and there's a bond you can't really describe," Istre said
"I never understood how smart and intelligent squirrels are until now
Istre said Willamina learned basic sign language words to communicate "more," "food" and "please."
"A lot of people have asked me how to acquire a squirrel or how to care for one," Istre said
I don't want people thinking that I want them going out into the wild and taking them from the wild because that's cruel
This was a very special circumstance because of quarantine and because of the nature of her injury
And now we're able to give her a happy ending."
She brought her to a squirrel rehabilitator and was assured that Willamina would slowly be reintroduced outdoors in a sanctuary with other squirrels
Istre has even gotten updates via text message
"Regardless of how heartbroken I am and how she might have some anxiety about separating from me
this is the best option for her — to live a normal life outside of a house," she said
And I just can't have that on my conscious
I just don't want her to feel like I abandoned her

owner of C'est Bon restaurant in Mermentau
Ricky Istre has owned C'est Bon restaurant in the Acadia Parish town of Mermentau since it opened in 1986
it was atop a list of "These 8 small town Louisiana restaurants will serve you the best meal of your life."
Louisiana right across town from where C’est Bon is located (1400 Railroad Ave.)
My mother would cook for the entire family every single Sunday
and she was a big inspiration for the recipes we use today
and I was blessed to take up the talent of cooking after her
I started off by managing the local gas/service station in town
my mother — Beatrice (Bea) Istre — worked at nearly every single restaurant in the area
When she was working at the last restaurant left in town
which caused there to not be a restaurant left for any of the locals
This made us decide to open our own little drive-in restaurant just for homemade hamburgers and such
Our story began as an 8-by-16 building on wheels
moved across the street and added on to become the seafood restaurant we are now
we have been blessed to have a steady business throughout the years
If I could say I learned one thing throughout the years
it would be to make sure to stay on top of everything
You can’t expect other people to run your business the way you want it run
You have to show up every single day and put in the work in order to achieve success
local customers that return week after week and have supported us throughout the years
we have become well-known for our boiled seafood
and we continue to pull in customers from elsewhere who make coming to C’est Bon a tradition for them any time they pass through the area
Our employees also build solid relationships with the customers that come time and time again which we are very lucky for
Food being such a big deal in our area only adds more pressure to us as a restaurant
We are located right in Cajun country where everyone knows how good Cajun food is supposed to taste
“You’re only as good as your last meal you served.” Because we’re located in such a rural area
majority of customers who come to our restaurant have their expectations on how Cajun food is supposed to taste
Earlier this year we made one of those internet lists for best small-town restaurants in Louisiana
We actually found the article through our customers
It was awesome to see that our customers were just as excited as we were about being recognized for all the hard work we put into this restaurant
We actually did get quite a bit of buzz from the article
Customers would come in saying that they read about us on a list on Facebook and they had to give us a try
It was such an honor to be put on such a list in the first place
and to have people give us a chance because of it was incredible
If someone is to open up a restaurant in a small town like Mermentau
you have to take well to criticism and always try to produce the best product
There are good times and there are bad times in this business
Staying true to who you are and what you envision is vital
We have been blessed with some of the best employees that have stayed with us throughout the years and helped us transform C’est Bon into what it is today
