Binoculars mean the difference between seeing a little gray bird and identifying a titmouse
cheering a home run and seeing the epic catch
or realizing that the 10-point buck is actually a doe standing in front of dead branches
making it sharp and clear far beyond what your eye is capable of seeing
you must be clear about what you're going to use them for
If you'd just like to watch some birds at the feeder in your backyard and perhaps overcome the limitations of the cheap seats at the ballpark
if you go birding in diverse locations or are planning a big hunt in unfamiliar territory
it's often worth the extra money to get something a little more powerful
Updated October 2024: We've added Canon's image-stabilized binoculars
and Pentax's new PF-85EDA spotting scope

Binoculars are usually listed with two number specifications; for example, the Nikon Monarch M5 are 8x42. Here's what that means:
The number 8 refers to the magnification power. Objects seen through these binoculars will be eight times bigger than when you look with your naked eye. Newcomers should stick with 6X or 8X. They have enough power that you'll see things clearly, but they don't magnify so much that you'll struggle to find what you want to see or have trouble following fast-moving objects (though all binoculars take some practice).
Nikon's Monarch 5 binoculars were my first “real” binoculars. Years later, their upgraded M5 is my top pick for most people just getting started. These offer great bang for your buck, and the 8x42 magnification is the most versatile. It isn't just me, either. These are some of the most common binoculars I see when I'm out birding.
The Monarch M5s are also light enough that they can hang around your neck all day without bothering you too much, and they come with the most comfortable stock strap of any binoculars I've tested.
The nomenclature for the Monarch series is a little confusing. I'm recommending the Monarch M5 here, released in 2022, but the Monarch 5 binoculars I own are technically still available. The new M5 designation features a slightly wider field of view and better optical coatings. There's also the more expensive Monarch M7 series, which is available in 8x42. I have not tested the latter, which offers an even larger field of view but is significantly more expensive.
Our top pick at this size is the Vortex Viper HD Binoculars. These offer excellent clarity, crisp, clear views, and good color accuracy. The colors are slightly less saturated to my eye, but I only noticed this in side-by-side comparisons with the Nikons above. The focus wheel is smooth, though I wish it were slightly faster. There is some blurring in the periphery (the edges of your field of vision through the lenses), but that's to be expected at this price.
One caveat: Cabela's frequently sells the pre-2018 model of these at a steep discount but doesn't label it as such. I have not tested that model, and while the deal is pretty good, the optics are definitely different and potentially inferior.
Small, lightweight, and portable. Comfortable eye cups. Easy to focus. Very little chromatic aberrations.
Compact binoculars often involve a significant compromise in image quality. Depending on your use case, the weight savings may be worth the trade-off, but in general, I suggest that birders and hunters stick with 32-mm or larger binoculars. Yes, you can bird with 8x25s, but it's often frustrating.
At just 4 inches long and weighing a mere 7.2-ounce, the Bushnell Powerview 2 8x21 binoculars are as compact as they are ridiculously affordable. They’re not amazing binoculars, but they’re amazing value. They’re sturdy, with an aluminum chassis rather than plastic, and despite the price tag, they come with a simple neck strap and case (but no lens caps). Consider them good first binoculars for your kids or a good addition to your everyday carry. You never know when you might spot a bird.
The eye cups fold down for glasses-wearers but not easily. They’re better without glasses, adjusting the focus and diopter to your eyesight. The image is bright enough by day. Tracking a flying bird may be difficult, but they’re good for studying stationary birds. They’re also a great introduction to the magic of moon-gazing.—Caramel Quin
Before I dive into why the Nocs are great for kids, let me be clear: Nocs are not kids’ binoculars. They're fine compact binoculars that fit well in the ultralight category above. I “borrow” them from my kids all the time. I wouldn't suggest these as the best first pair of binoculars for young kids (in that case, see our budget pick below), but for anyone over the age of 8, these make a great, compact, first pair of binoculars.
You get good magnification, with a waterproof (IPX7 rating) and fogproof design in a lightweight package (11.8 ounces). These also have two things that specifically make them great for kids: rugged construction and a nice, rubberized grip. I can't tell you how many trees and rocks these have bashed into while around my son's neck, and they're still as good as new.
As with all Celestron binos there's a nice big, smooth focusing knob, and they also have long eye relief which makes them easy to use with glasses. There is a fair bit chromatic aberration, especially with bright stars or the moon, but I didn't find it distracting. In fact, for the price, these provide surprisingly great views.
Image-stabilized binoculars use electronics to smooth out your view similar to what action cams do to get rid of jittery video. There are quite a few models out there, and we are still testing, but here are few that have stood out from the pack so far.
Image-stabilized binoculars tend to be expensive
but Canon has quite a few budget models worth considering
You just tap the button on top for five minutes of stabilization
The tech detects your movement and adjusts for it optically
are doubly pocket-friendly: They’re surprisingly affordable and fit in a large pocket
they won’t weigh you down. The 8X magnification is good for wildlife and sports
as is the 10X magnification of the only slightly larger Canon 10x20 IS
The 6.6-degree field of view is narrow but wide enough for most situations
then I pressed the button and saw the difference: It’s crisp
with crisp detail so steady that it trumps optically superior models
The 45-degree bend in the scope makes it comfortable to use sitting or standing. That said, if you're looking for a lightweight scope, look elsewhere; this thing is large and heavy. That said, it’s relatively compact, and the performance is outstanding for the price. While I haven't tested many others, the PF-85EDA is a nice midrange option that's light-years better than cheaper models but won't set you back $3,000 or more like high-end spotting scopes.
Since a number of readers have asked, I personally own a pair of Nikon 8x42 Monarchs (the older version of our top pick), a pair of Celestron 10x42 Regal ED. When I head of hiking and I don't have anything to test, I use the Celestron Trailblazer ED 8x32.
While knowing that 8x42 means 8x magnification with 42mm objective lenses is a good starting point for choosing binoculars, there are a number of other terms it helps to understand.
You may have noticed that the binoculars in this guide span a huge price range, from under $100 to over $3,000. This comes down to two main factors: the quality of glass and coatings, and the engineering behind them.
Most of the binoculars listed here share the same BaK-4 roof prism design, which is a glass designation used by the German glassmaker Schott AG. However, within that design standard, there is still a significant range in quality. The unfortunate truth is that the more you spend, the better the image quality will likely be.
That difference is very obvious when comparing high-end Leicas or Swarovskis to $300 models like the Monarch M5. The difference between the Monarch M5 and similarly priced 8x42 binoculars is much less obvious. For this reason, I highly suggest visiting your local store and trying some of these, if at all possible. Some people will see little difference between a $300 pair and a $500 pair, but you'll never know unless you try them out.
If you can't get to a store, stick with our top pick. It may not be the absolute best that money can buy, but it will be good enough for most people and will leave more money in your pocket.

Autre souvenir, autre « image dingue ». « J’ai passé le dernier cordon de sécurité, je ne sais trop comment, et je me suis retrouvé seul au milieu de rues jonchées de papiers et de cendres, avec des vélos encore attachés. La vie s’était arrêtée », décrit l’auteur et grand reporter de TF 1, qui sera malgré tout frappé par la capacité de résilience des New-Yorkais.

but after having found a home in 3x3 the pair now want to leave their mark
By Chloe MerrellKatherine and Michelle Plouffe don’t need to say it because they know that in the fast-paced, high-stakes and sometimes unforgiving world of 3x3 basketball having your twin sister as your team-mate is a special kind of advantage
It’s visible on the half-court with the way the two so often connect to set each other up for buckets
a point of the finger and they can sense exactly what the other means or intends without having to say a word
It’s part of the unique understanding that comes with sharing that exact same genetic makeup that only a few can ever truly appreciate
“We have a great relationship and we get to do what we love together,” Michelle, sat next to her sister, chimed in with agreement.
Since making the conversion from 5-on-5 basketball to 3x3 in 2019, the twins, who grew up playing in a big sporting household, have been the beating core of Canada’s women’s team along with another founding member in Paige Crozon. And now, with Kacie Bosch blooded in, the squad has become a force to be reckoned with on the Women’s Series and on the international stage.
Getting to play with one another in a positive environment that they have helped build from the ground up means the Plouffe twins are now thriving together both on and off the court.
But throughout their journey to now, they haven’t always been side-by-side and content like they are now.
Michelle and Katherine's first parting came by choice at age 17 when the two decided they needed to break from each other’s company so that they could be seen as individuals and not twins
It was a desire that had grown after years of being judged against one another
“When you’re always with each other doing the same thing and being compared often it can breed comparison in a negative way,” Katherine said on the challenges of growing up being a twin
“There’s also a healthy comparison where you can level up to
there was the unhealthy portion” Michelle chipped in
“We were trying to figure out ourselves and each other and how to have that healthy relationship that was not envying or being jealous or comparing ourselves
Everyone has that with someone at some point in not being rooted in their own identity and comparing themselves it just happened to be also doing that from birth.”
they decided to go to different universities
Michelle chose the University of Utah and Katherine
“It was great for me because Michelle is a strong leader and I wanted to develop that so the space allowed me to do that
Find myself a bit; on the court and off the court
It was just a neat opportunity to be individuals
“I got called Michelle in my own university and I’m like
‘She’s not even here!’ But I would talk about her all the time so
those years were formative to their relationship now because
“When we went to university it was the first time we had been apart so we were like 17 and hadn’t been apart before
It was probably July or August… we didn’t talk to each other or call each other until our birthday which was September 15th and then we were like
“It was just weird because we never had to pick up the phone to call each other,” Michelle continued laughing as Katherine underlined the realisation the two went through after that moment
‘You take it for granted that they’re in the next room if you need to talk to them
the relationships that last are the ones you put effort in and because we’re family and close
Picture by 2016 Getty ImagesMichelle Plouffe in action during the women's basketball tournament at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games
Another test of the twins’ relationship came not long after when Michelle was selected to represent Canada in basketball at London 2012 Olympics but Katherine was not
The experience of missing out was one Katherine now considers one of the most important in her career as she learnt for the first time the importance of thinking beyond just herself
“That was a turning point in my career for sure and definitely off the court
figuring out back to the identity question
“It was a big moment because I had to figure out who am I apart from basketball
Because I think that’s a question a lot of professional athletes wrestle with when we’re doing one thing for most of our lives and most of our time
When that gets taken away through injury or other circumstances
And that was a great turning point for me in getting connected to people
“I thought I was up here in people’s eyes like
‘What will people think of me if I didn’t go?’ In reality
it got my eyes off myself and allowed me to focus on where Michelle was and the opportunity she had
and I got to go out and support her in London with my mom so we made a trip out there
“I was the surprise,” Katherine said finishing her thought at the same time Michelle shouted
“She surprised me!” Before both erupted with laughter
Katherine decided to still travel to the UK to support her twin alongside their mum but the family opted to keep it a secret
had no idea what was coming but described seeing her sister in the stands like it was just yesterday
I thought my mum was coming with my aunt - auntie Barbara - and so at the Opening Ceremony
then lining up and everyone’s calling their people
straight to voicemail and I’m like ‘She is not answering my phone calls!’ Like getting mad
we look up and someone told us where our family was
and I think I saw our mum and mum was jumping and pointing and then I saw Katherine there and then I think I cried
And it was really awesome having her there - it was really great
“I remember the first step she stepped on the court to play
“Mostly because I wanted you to get your shot out there
Four years later, the Plouffes finally got to share an Olympic experience at Rio 2016 when they were both picked to play for Canada in the women’s basketball event. Michelle was particularly grateful to have her sister then by her side and not in the stands.
“It was much different having her there. It was much more fun, for me personally. It was just something we could share together. We do have our own journeys and identities but it’s also a huge blessing to have a shared experience like that together and the Olympics is not an everyday thing.”
Now, seven years on, the two are working hard to once more to be at an Olympics together again but this time in 3x3.
Speaking about their entry into the half-court game, the pair credit their team-mate Crozon who first mentioned the format to them a few years prior. Having both felt their time in 5-on-5 was up they decided they wanted in - and they made the call to Crozon.
“After 2018, I was good to go leave the 5-on-5 team. Katherine was already not on the team so we were like, ‘This is it; we’re going to do this.’ So we called up Paige, and she was on board immediately,” Michelle explained. “It was like the perfect collision of circumstance; a perfect storm. And we kind of took the opportunity and ran with it. We kind of forced ourselves onto the 3x3 scene.”
What the twins refer to as “small beginnings” started with them both having to understand the nuances of their sport.
“The first game was a struggle for sure,” Katherine recalled laughing. “We played against France and they already knew what they were doing out there and we were running around.
“I don’t know even know if we got many shots,” Michelle added before Katherine replied, “There was so much running around.”
Though they had to learn a lot, and fast, the young team relished their new environment and the opportunities that came with it.
“It’s just a much different environment which we love,” Michelle said explaining how why she and Katherine connected so much with 3x3.
“You’re on the world tour, you see these teams at every stop and so you get to know the players and how they operate and what kind of challenges they’re going through so it’s very much like a familial atmosphere. As opposed to the 5x5 where the group is already so big it’s like a 20-person team so it’s not like you’re intermingling with all the other countries, it’s a much different atmosphere. It’s very welcoming.”
Despite only truly committing to 3x3 in four years ago, it didn’t take long for the results to reflect the new-found happiness they were feeling on the court.
Two years after breaking through onto the Women’s Series collecting tour stop wins in their wake, they clinched silver at the 2022 3x3 World Cup and then the 2022 AmeriCup.
Though not quite able to replicate their success last year at the 2023 edition of the World Cup, the Canadians remain at the top of the game with Michelle, Katherine and Paige occupying one, two and three, in the 3x3 individual player rankings reflecting their ability to dominate on the half-court.
“We have expectations of ourselves as a team first of all. Not as a heavy burden but more that we know what we can achieve so it’s more like a standard of excellence that we want to be pulled to,” Michelle said on why the Canadians have been so successful so quickly.
“That’s why it’s so helpful that we’re all light-hearted and joyful; it really just grounds us in something other than, ‘OK, this game’. It’s like, OK we play better and enjoy ourselves more when we have fun and we’re working together and all that stuff so I think that’s one of the strengths of our team is our chemistry on the court but also our general outlook on what this is and how we view life and it really goes a long way.”

Strong and healthy bonds both on and off the court put the Plouffes, and Canada, in a great position to make it to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with qualification already underway
both were clear about their intention to be there citing it as their goal for the foreseeable future
Having both represented their country internationally in sports for well over a decade a trip to France for the next Olympics would mark another remarkable chapter of service and the significance of making it again was not lost on either of the twins who both reflected on what it would mean to go
“The second wave representing Canada with 3x3
the time has gone by so fast for me at least,” Katherine said
“But looking back it’s been so many steps along the way
Maybe building to this point or just seeing the process as a whole
It’s been so fun and freeing to take each moment by moment but it’s a cool goal to have: that we’re trying to qualify for the Olympics
That is the goal and that’s going to happen.”
“It just feels different with this team than with the 5-on-5 team because the group is so small
Not that if we fell short it would all be meaningless
but it would be awesome to see the fruit of that at the Olympics in Paris with a medal or whatever that looks like
"It would just be the cherry on top.”

Local residents may have looked twice Tuesday as two television camera crews raced behind two competing teams in a new TFO show hosted by identical twins
Balestra Productions of Ottawa spent the day filming an episode of “Les jumelles,” a weekly Télé-Française d'Ontario show hitting the airwaves this fall
racing against the clock to solve a series of riddles about the area's history and geography
the teams made stops at Albert's fries in Point Edward
Each stop provided them with a GPS coordinate that eventually led them to their ultimate destination at the Petrolia Discovery
but the filming lasts all day,” said production co-ordinator Alain Lauzon
Sarnia was chosen for a Les jumelles episodes because of its sizable French-speaking population
The crew is travelling all summer to 13 cities
The full first season begins airing on TFO this September
A second season was ordered even before audiences could react
That's because TFO recognized the educational component and likes the show very much
The episode filmed in Sarnia is the 12th for the second season and is expected to air in the fall of 2014
Four 13-year-olds from Ecole secondaire catholique St-Francois Xavier were chosen to star in the Sarnia show

in Montreal of complications after surgery
it will come as a surprise that Yolène Jumelle formed part of the Canadian Who's Who
she has been listed in that almanac of notable Canadians
She is also in the Who's Who in Black Canada
and the International Biographical Centre in Britain lists Yolène as: "a person who made an outstanding contribution to human rights."
but it is time the true story of a person who did not boast be made known to all
all I could muster in her obituary were the words "Yolène devoted her life to helping others." These words hardly do justice to a person who made an enormous contribution to Quebec and Canadian public life
Yolène began her life in Haiti as the daughter of a murdered politician who was a candidate for the presidency in Haiti
The Duvalier dictatorship imprisoned her for her politics
into which she had been born: the jumelliste party was opposed to the Duvalier regime
not knowing if she would be killed from one day to the next
knowing of the American role in Haitian politics
she earned a masters degree in sociology and studied law
It was there that she befriended Michaëlle Jean
Michaëlle Jean addressed a letter of condolence in which she referred to Yolène having suffered at the hands of Papa Doc Duvalier
I have no doubt that these harsh beginnings made Yolène into the determined and strong advocate for human rights that she was
an NGO that helps Haitian immigrants integrate into Quebec society
and CRARR (Centre de recherche-action sur les relations raciales) whose purpose is to counter racism in Montreal and in Canada
Yolène assumed a leadership role in the Congress of Black Women serving first as its vice-president from 1984 to 1988
Both the federal and Quebec governments recognized Yolène for her contributions to the larger community
the federal government named her an administrative judge at the Immigration and Refugee Board
and in 1997 the Quebec government named her to the Tribunal administrative du Québec
where she adjudicated social welfare cases
But most of Yolène's good works will never be documented
Her many friends will remember how Yolène took up both their causes and those of their parents and children as if they were her own

Lucy and Maria Aylmer are about as close as two twin sisters can get, but you’d never guess it just from looking at them – Lucy has fair skin and straight red hair while her sister has ebony, curly hair and dark skin
were born to a Caucasian father (Vince) and a half-Jamaican mother (Donna)
The unidentical twins also called dizygotic or fraternal twins
happen when two different eggs are fertilized by two different sperms at the same time
that this type of twins is basically just regular siblings
hence these two beautiful girls’ completely different looks
“No-one ever believes we are twins because I am white and Maria is black,,” Lucy said
we still don’t even look like sisters
When we’ve met friends for the first time
and they have even made us produce our birth certificates to prove that we are actually twins.”

The Beauty of Genetics…love it!
You're right :)
Gotta love genetics!!! They have similar bodies though. If you look at their legs you'll see that their knees are very similar.
I thought their noses were very similar as well.
I thought that about their knees too!
That's exactly what I thought.
If you look at the other pictures I do think the redhead looks very much like her mother.
They both look very much like their mother, I think.
I also noticed their legs being very very similar. :)
Beautiful family!
