Members of the La Cala Lions were out in the streets again last weekend promoting the diabetes support group’s awareness campaign
an initiative that the group described as a “mammoth success”
As part of the town’s World Health Day (7 April) activities
volunteers set up a stall in the centre of La Cala de Mijas
where they offered free glucose testing to the public
The support group's two nurses tested more than 100 people in just three hours
while volunteers offered advice about diabetes
its symptoms and the importance of early detection
Other organisations that took part in the initiative included the Red Cross and Adimi; as well as the Lions Alzheimer support group
which demonstrated the benefits that ‘fiddle muffs’ offer dementia sufferers
These knitted muffs come complete with bells
buttons and balls and are designed to relieve tension and restlessness as part of a comforting sensory experience
“Well done to Mijas town hall for organising such an educational and enjoyable day
The Lions are committed to making a positive impact in La Cala de Mijas and surrounding areas by supporting communities and meeting humanitarian needs,” Anne Bowles

Karen Brady is on the cusp of publishing her fifth novel
‘Where’s the Money?’ And it is full of the character of the Costa del Sol
Karen finds inspiration in unexpected places
the idea came from a conversation about stories in a newspaper with a friend
‘Where’s the Money?’ is a tale of intrigue and mystery
of overcoming adversity at a point when all hope appears to have been lost
both ex-nurses meet two well-to-do men with less than transparent business links

Karen Brady explained to the Euro Weekly News that all her novels come in different ‘flavours.’ She writes in multiple genres
but they all share a common theme of triumph over adversity offering second chances
but if there is one thing that they share in common
it is about a journey and about changing tack to achieve triumph over adversity
The stories also inevitably contain a great deal of Karen’s own experiences and observations from life
a life and career that took her around the globe via Dubai
She absorbs all the culture around her wherever she is

Mijas town hall has begun the comprehensive reform of Calles Nerja and Casarabonela in La Cala
a project that includes the installation of new infrastructure and the elimination of architectural barriers to make the streets more accessible to pedestrians
The work involves the replacement of the drinking water supply and sanitation networks
and the installation of a new LED lighting system to improve energy efficiency and reduce gas emissions. The current pavements and road surfaces will be replaced and all signage will be changed
and new urban furniture will also be installed
The work is part of a project aimed at the overall improvement of the neighbourhood
with a focus on the reorganisation of streets with high vehicle and pedestrian circulation
"The final objective is to achieve an area that meets the accessibility criteria in which the presence of pedestrians is prioritised over that of vehicles," explained Mayor Ana Mata during a visit to the area on Monday
The work has a budget of 407,468 euros and an execution period of four months
The total number of inhabitants of Mijas and Fuengirola is
during the summer months this population triples
reaching a reality that exceeds 500,000 people
This half a million inhabitants (temporary or permanent) will hardly have a single health centre open 24 hours a day
which does not have a referral hospital despite the promises of various Andalusian executives
usually had in the summer months the accident and emergency centres in La Cala de Mijas and Las Lagunas to cope with this demand
although medical professionals had been warning for years that the situation was unsustainable
Far from solving the problem ahead of what is expected to be a record summer in terms of visitor numbers in the province
the regional ministry of health has announced that the centre in La Cala de Mijas will close its doors at 3pm every day from the 15 July until 15 September
leaving the centre in Las Lagunas as the only alternative in the event of an emergency out of hours
The only other option for these potential patients is to go to the emergency services of the Hospital Costa del Sol in Marbella or the Hospital Clínico in Malaga
The La Cala health centre has not always had 24-hour emergency services
It was not until 2018 when the then PSOE regional government of Susana Díaz activated both this service and the ambulance service after years of demands from the opposition parties
The delegate of the Malaga medical union on the Costa del Sol
said that there is already an enormous "work overload" in this district
"We must remember that it is an eminently touristy area
because there are no plans for reinforcements or expansion"
it is now that there should be more people working in the district
but there are fewer staff to cope with the increased demand
"Last year there were days when there weren't even enough doctors to go in the ambulances," De la Cruz stressed
"So our forecasts for 2024 are more pessimistic
because more tourists are coming and we will have fewer resources," he pointed out
recalling that the month of July began with colleagues on holiday and no one had yet been hired
the delegation of health in Malaga made public the organisation of the health district
The centres of San Miguel and Arroyo de la Miel in the area of Torremolinos-Benalmádena
Leganitos and San Pedro Alcántara in Marbella
and Estepona Oeste in Estepona will remain open
"providing normal care between 8am and 8pm"
They also announced that the primary care emergency services (SUAP) in San Miguel
San Pedro Alcántara and Estepona Oeste would remain open 24 hours a day
This means that the centres of La Carihuela
Sabinillas and La Cala will close at 15:00
another controversy has arisen with the Sabinillas health centre
the centre did open during its normal opening hours for a few weeks last summer
while the regional ministry strongly denies this
and assures that the "only" change from one summer to the next is the closure of La Cala
although without explaining the reasons or how they will face the summer under these circumstances
the medical union itself denounced the situation of primary care in the district
Antonio de la Cruz explained that his organisation had carried out a study completed on 30 April this year which revealed that 2024 would be a "disaster foretold" due to the increase in the population
without taking into account the increase in tourism
the health district currently has 285 family doctors with medical quotas and 105 doctors assigned to the six primary care emergency services
According to the data of the study and "despite the many promises made by the management"
the union claims that there has been an increase of 25,000 new users
"without any of the promised quota reductions having been implemented"
the Malaga medical union was already considering the need to incorporate 35 family doctors and five paediatricians
"a number that has increased by far at the moment" due to the increase in population in the area
91.92 per cent of the family doctors have more than 1,500 users
while 56 per cent of the paediatricians have more than 1,000 children assigned to them

The annual feria will include a programme of rock
all of which take place in the municipal caseta with free admission until full capacity is reached
The fair will also offer traditional folklore shows
The official switch on of the illuminations will take place on Wednesday at 10pm
although the festivities will start at 7.30pm
with the colourful parade of giants and big heads
The day feria will be held in Plaza El Torreón and will offer typical entertainment and cuisine
Civil Protection volunteers will again offer identification bracelets for children and people at risk of disorientation
It has been two months since a water leak in the Balcón del Mar residential development on the seafront near La Cala de Mijas
where the Senda Litoral coastal path in the Torrenueva area passes by
part of the wooden walkway that forms the route at that point also broke away
the damage remains on the beach with town hall saying it is the responsibility of the local residents to fix it
although the damage bill is "high" according to town hall
It was first thought that the landslide was a result of the rains which had fallen a few days earlier
however it was later found to be the result of "a water leak in the meter room of the Balcones del Mar community of owners
Residents had not detected the leak and the amount of water ended up causing the damage
according to Mijas councillor Daniel Gómez
the section of the wooden footbridge is still in the same spot
forcing pedestrians and cyclists to divert around it via an adjacent service road
Even more striking is the dent that the landslide made in the land on which the block of flats stands
as well as some downed fences which used to surround the garden
"The council cannot touch anything because all the damage has been caused by a third party," Gómez said
He said it is up to the community of residents itself to hire the necessary machinery to remove the damage
as well as to clean up the fallen part of the slope and carry out a reinforcement with rockfill and piling of the land
before replacing the coastal path as it was before the water leakage
"They already have an execution order and we know that they are willing to repair it," said Gómez
"I am aware that they have requested several estimates because the work is costly and that they are in contact with the insurance companies with the intention of speeding up the process," he added
The young man who barricaded himself inside a property in La Cala de Mijas on the Costa del Sol on Monday afternoon has been arrested after a tense standoff
apparently fired several shots at Guardia Civil officers who tried to negotiate with him to turn himself in and one of them was injured in the foot
Last October he was shot five times in an apparent revenge shooting in Doña Lola
He was left paralysed from the waist down and now moves around with the help of a wheelchair
has been arrested several times by police for serious offences since he was under-18
The alarm was apparently raised by family members when they realised that the man was armed
so they called for help from the Guardia Civil headquarters in Mijas
a unit was assembled to try to get the young man to turn himself in
Officers from the force’s rapid action group (GAR) went to the scene to negotiate but the individual - according to sources - responded by opening fire
The tense situation has made it necessary to cordon off the entire area
in which a strong security presence has been established
A specialist intervention unit (UEI) was mobilised and sent from Madrid to the Costa del Sol
The La Cala de Mijas Lions’ Alzheimer and dementia support group is now taking reservations for its Memory Day Forget-Me-Not Market

Along with stalls offering a variety of different products
the day will include live entertainment and refreshments
where visitors can hang messages in memory of their loved ones
and registration for two-metre space is by way of a donation of 15 euros: extra tables cost ten euros

A woman who allegedly performed cosmetic procedures
at her home in Mijas without the necessary qualifications has been arrested
Guardia Civil officers in Malaga started investigating after receiving five complaints from people who claimed to have received botched aesthetic treatment from the woman
Their procedures consisted of Botox and hyaluronic acid injections as well as other medication and they all took place in a private home in La Cala de Mijas
The treatments caused different injuries to each of the victims
for which they then needed professional help at various hospitals in the province of Malaga
The woman did not have a medical degree and was not registered as a doctor
necessary requirements to carry out the procedures and to obtain the medication involved
several vials containing injectable medicines and medical equipment such as needles and syringes
Police also discovered that the woman had stored medicines in her refrigerator
Numerous documents were also seized which show that the woman could have treated more than 100 people
It is still being investigated how the suspect acquired the medication

Mijas town hall has put the contract for a project for the expansion and remodelling of the La Cala football ground put out to tender
an initiative that has a budget of 57,851 euros
is to carry out an extensive remodelling of the facility
The successful bid must offer measures that maximise energy efficiency and sustainability
“It is about responding to the need to rectify the wear and tear of the facilities and to provide it with a complementary infrastructure that adjusts to the reality of the large number of people who use this space
so we must provide the municipality with infrastructures in accordance with its population density
the first of which will be replacement of the grass
The grass will be replaced with state-of-the-art artificial turf
which the council said will have a “positive impact not only on the player's performance
but also on the improvement of the image of the field”
The first phase also includes replacement of the seven-a-side and 11-a-side goals
The second phase includes the demolition of the current changing rooms and storage area
which will be replaced with a new building with an administration and meeting room
Sports councillor Mª Francisca Alarcón explained that the need for this intervention is necessary due to the deterioration of the pitch
and because the current stands lack a covered area
“which makes them impossible to use during inclement weather”
La Cala de Mijas Lions hosted its Christmas fair and market in La Butibamba (Mijas) last weekend
an annual festive gathering organised to further help those in vulnerable situations
The market offered stalls tempting visitors with an array of festive goodies and decorations
was inaugurated by the talented Drang drummers
who entertained with a repertoire of Christmas favourites
The event also had the participation of the Sur Pipes band
along with a troupe of Scottish dancers; a demonstration by the local children’s gymnastics school; a flamenco performance by the Victor Rojas group; while Maxi
had the audience jiving to the tunes of the ‘king of rock and roll’
There was also plenty to keep the youngsters occupied
and rides on a tuk tuk driven by his elves
Lions President Karen Blair thanked the foreigner’s department of Mijas town hall for their collaboration
especially Katja Thirion and Laura Córdoba García
who helped with the organisation on the day
“The event was a great success and the funds raised will be used by the Lions to further support those in need throughout the area,” the association said in a statement
there are still pleasures which money can't buy
A pork sandwich on the beach at La Butibamba (and a siesta under a sunshade afterwards)
With a product that seems crisis-proof and even war-proof (it has survived two: the War of Independence and the Civil War)
in La Cala de Mijas has been run by five generations of the Porras family and doesn't appear to be worried about the constantly rising inflation rate
A baguette big enough for two people and two soft drinks cost 7.80 euros
Not even the most galloping CPI can spoil something that affordable
product and ambience in this venta (the slot machine rattles away
there are photos of the specialities on the walls and the TV is blaring at full volume
as custom dictates) could not be more traditional
millionaires and world-famous artists appreciating the virtues of their legendary pork tenderloin
The democratic character of La Butibamba is part of its recipe for success and has a lot to do with its origins as a coaching inn in the early 19th century
it was just a simple hut and there was nothing else here: no houses
it was officially designated as a coaching inn and tobacco shop; and that was a good thing
It was regulated by the government and was obliged to provide shelter and food for travellers
no matter what time they turned up," says the present manager of La Butibamba
who is married to the founder's great-grand-daughter
who would drink wine from containers known as 'botes' and used the expression "Qué 'bamba' he cogido!" to indicate that they were drunk
the establishment was much more than just a place to drink
eat and stay: it was also where all the mail for people living in that area would be delivered
La Butibamba has been famous for its 'lomo en manteca' (marinated pork tenderloin cooked in lard) from the start
"That was how meat was preserved when there was nowhere cold to keep it," says Francisco Javier Sepúlveda
this was the place that bandits and civil guards would come to eat
They didn't normally coincide because the bandits were vigilant
although more than one skirmish did occur within these walls
"They say the famous Flores Arrocha once had to hide in the stables from the civil guard
He hid behind a donkey but it bit him on the ear
and he had to put up with the pain until the civil guards had gone
that Flores Arrocha; he ran off into the hills after killing his father-in-law and three other relatives
Years later they caught him and shot him in Marbella," says Sepúlveda
In those romantic days in the early 19th century
the famous bandit El Tempranillo also stopped off more than once at La Butibamba
the bed in which the monarch had slept for one night was kept in the attic
his entourage arrived to organise a bedroom for him in the attic of the house
because there were no rooms here; the travellers slept where the animals were kept
and after he had gone it remained here for months and months
They had to get permission from the government official to move it," says Sepúlveda
during one of the two times the building was demolished and then rebuilt
La Butibamba also provided food for the early travellers to the Costa del Sol in the first half of the 20th century
"even went into the kitchen" when he stopped off there on his way to Ronda
and that solitary enclave became one of the busiest and most populated areas of the Costa del Sol
A new and flourishing life began for this historical establishment
and that's when the present manager began to work there
he married the owner's daughter and took over when he died
has now joined the family business after studying Economics
The present clientele at La Butibamba is a mixture of locals
sales representatives and other workers in transit who stop off for breakfast or lunch
we can serve 200 sandwiches or more a day," says Sepúlveda
"People all over Spain know about us," he says
The establishment is still open to everyone: at the bar or at one of the tables you might find golfer Miguel Ángel Jiménez
singer El Sevilla or politician Elías Bendodo
Antonio Banderas and José Tomás have also enjoyed a bite to eat at La Butibamba
"I will always remember when Camarón de la Isla came
At the next table there was a lad who had a tattoo of Camarón's face
and Camarón sang for him," says Francisco Javier Sepúlveda
On the advice of a famous publicist - and loyal customer - the star product of this historic venta no longer appears as 'bocadillo de lomo' on the menu but as 'Bocadillo Butibamba'
"He recommended that we change the name because there are a lot of pork sandwiches around but none are like ours," says Francisco Javier Sepúlveda
"If I were to blindfold you and give you 50 different ones to try
you'd know which one was ours," he insists
Supposing that anyone would survive a test like that
they would undoubtedly conclude that the difference lies in the tenderness of the meat
slowly (it is marinated for 24 hours with sweet paprika
salt and lard and then fried for two hours or until it passes 'the fork test')
Because if that is good enough for Coca-Cola
it is certainly good enough for the legendary pork tenderloin of La Butibamba
there is an ingredient 'X' and nobody else knows what it is
It happened by accident: it's something really silly but it completely alters the result
It's what makes the meat so tender," he says
"Only the family and a chef who has been with us for 30 years knows," he adds
The star dishes on the menu are made with this type of meat
displayed in a collage of photos with echoes of the 1970s: they include the Bocadillo Butibamba (made by inserting several pieces of pork
The pieces of leftover meat are used to make spreads like 'zurrapa' and 'manteca colorá' for breakfast
which are also sold in jars as a sort of hyper calorific souvenir
"My son is thinking of selling them in delicatessens in the future," he says
Obviously not everything is made with pork: there is a wide range of sandwiches including options for vegans
"We recommend ordering half a sandwich if you're not a big eater," Francisco Javier Sepúlveda advises
As announced this Wednesday, April 26, Mijas Town Council will celebrate Labour Day in Spain next Monday 1 with its traditional ‘sardinada’, to be held in the municipality of La Cala de Mijas
Freshly-cooked sardines will be offered to locals and visitors
A total of 600 kilos will be cooked and distributed among the attendees
the councillor responsible for the feast of fish
explained that: “the sardines will be free for everyone and can be enjoyed on a day with live music from 12 midday and with a good atmosphere”
the mayor of Mijas highlighted that: “almost an extra 100 kilos of sardines will be cooked compared to last year when around 2,500 plates of sardines were distributed”
This activity always arouses great interest and attracts many visitors to the event
there will be live music and a large marquee providing shade
“This marquee gives the possibility of having musical activities to complement the sardinada
this festival becomes a great family event
Anyone who has come to the sardine festival in previous years will have noted the great atmosphere that exists on this festive day,” added the councillor
“The recently renovated Neighbourhood Association Santa Teresa will be responsible for running the bar, which will have popular prices,” she added. Residents and visitors alike will be able to enjoy this party well into the afternoon, as reported by mijascommunication.com
The residents of La Cala de Mijas are getting ready for the return of the town’s long-awaited summer feria
which will be held from Wednesday 27 until Sunday 31 July
The fair will offer five days of live music and entertainment
along with traditional activities like the procession of the giants and the selection of the feria king and queen
along with flamenco performances and the habitual sevillanas
The town hall claims that it has “made an extra effort” to ensure that this year’s event
the first since before the pandemic hit in 2020
will be better than ever and will offer something for all age groups and musical tastes
A string of pop and rock groups will perform at the municipal caseta from 10.30pm each night: these will include Mago de Oz (Thursday)
a Madrid folk-metal band renowned for their unique Celtic vibes; Delaossa (Friday)
a popular rap artiste from the El Palo district of Malaga; and La Húngara (Sunday)
a singer from Seville who has enjoyed relative success in the Spanish pop charts
The fair will kick off on Wednesday with the parade of the giants through the streets of La Cala de Mijas at 7.30pm
followed by the official switching on of the feria lights at 10pm
when the majority of the rides on the fairground will have a reduced price of two euros
will be inaugurated in Plaza Torreón on Friday 29 July
As reported by the Guardia Civil in a statement on Tuesday, March 7, a lorry driver transporting bananas who suffered a huge accident in the Malaga municipality of Mijas on February 24
presented obvious symptoms of driving under the influence of drugs
the Guardia Civil officers found the 60-year-old driver with minor injuries
He was clearly displaying the symptoms of being under the influence of drugs
They proceeded to investigate him for a crime against Road Safety
in which he tested positive for two classes of narcotics
It was also discovered that the lorry’s tachograph had been tampered with
A mechanism had been installed which prevented it from marking the activity actually carried out
For this reason, the investigation of the driver was extended to include the commission of an alleged crime of false documentation. The police proceedings have since been delivered to the Court of Instruction of Fuengirola, as reported by malagahoy.es

CARING for literally hundreds of dogs and cats
the ACE Charity (Animal Care España) Dog Shelters in La Cala de Mijas and Algeciras have – like millions of people in Spain – been in lockdown since the middle of March due to the Covid-19 pandemic
explains the massive impact that this unprecedented global health crisis is having on the Charity’s vital work
Both ACE shelters have completely closed to the public
All flights and road transportation have been cancelled
meaning that our many dogs who already had new adoptive homes waiting for them in various countries across Europe are unable to leave ACE while the restrictions continue
our students have had no choice but to head home
In addition to our many dogs and cats in foster care
our Shelter in La Cala de Mijas is currently home to 350 canines
with a further 150 residing in our Refugio in Algeciras
our much-depleted team works flat out to ensure that all the animals being looked after at the ACE Shelters still receive the loving care
attention and treatment that they need on a daily basis
The dogs still get their daily exercise and the chance to run free in our fully enclosed field
The Spanish government has confirmed to us that dogs and cats cannot spread coronavirus to humans and having saved and rehomed more than 23,000 dogs and a large number of cats over the past 20 years
we are well-versed in all aspects of quarantine
disinfection and constant handwashing is second nature to the ACE team
We receive no government funding whatsoever and depend entirely on donations
our vital fundraising events have been cancelled
unwanted dogs and cats are sadly still being dumped at our gates… and our costs continue to rise
If this lockdown continues for several months
then the survival of ACE is seriously at risk
But maybe it’s better to take one day at a time and to pray that this nightmare soon ends
We are passionate about saving and rehoming as many abandoned
unwanted and badly treated dogs and cats as we possibly can… because every life is precious
If you would like to help us to help the animals
there are various ways that you can make a difference:
You could make a one-off donation either by bank transfer or PayPal
Or you might like to support our work on an ongoing basis by donating €15/month or perhaps €50/month to sponsor a kennel
Please visit www.ace-charity.org or send donations to:

Home » The Little Geranium Restaurant, La Cala de Mijas » Review: The Little Geranium
The Little Geranium Restaurant La Cala de Mijas
A fantastic write-up and review from our friends at The Olive Press
“FOODIES in Mijas should be licking their lips with glee
For they finally have a true gourmet talent in their midst
The Little Geranium in La Cala is not only a stunning spot for outdoor dining
they have a talented former Michelin star chef
Once starring in TV’s Ready Steady Cook and having written 10 cookbooks
Saunders used to run the highly-rated Pink Geranium
the former soil association member was in the vanguard of the organic movement and ran three restaurants in the UK
But now he is back at the sharp end in Mijas
who is constantly buzzing around in her role as maitre’d
Choosing Spain due to their love of the country (they have travelled widely here and count chefs Ramon Freixa and Anthony Warrell Thompson as friends) they scouted around for months until they found the right spot
“We did our research and we realised that La Cala was crying out for a top restaurant,” he explains
“And so far things are picking up nicely.”
It is no real surprise his food being both fresh and healthy… and good value too
at lunch you get a choice of 13 tapas and you pay depending on how many you order with four
I tried his tempura prawns in a Japanese dip
as well as an amazing goats cheese salad with walnuts
The portions were generous and the service
It has only been open for a few weeks and the pair are still working on their wine list and suppliers
“Getting good goat has proven tricky and I have been waiting for days now for a beef order from Galicia,” he explains
“But on the whole we are spoilt for choice here in Andalucia for ingredients.”
gingham tablecloths create a very new feel for Mijas … and what is blatantly clear is Steven’s passion for food
he had me walking away with a smile.”

Residents and tourists in La Cala de Mijas will be getting 24-hour cover at the local health centre at last
as well as a seven-day emergency ambulance service
The announcement comes after years of campaigning by locals
Currently once the daytime doctors' surgeries end
patients have to travel to Las Lagunas health centre
ambulances also have to travel out from Las Lagunas
Residents' groups took their campaign for round-the-clock cover to the Andalusian regional parliament and had gathered a petition with thousands of signatures
the announcement generated political controversy
The news wasn't released by the PSOE-party-controlled Junta de Andalucía health department
possibly due to restrictions on announcements ahead of regional elections
but by the leader of the PSOE group on Mijas council
The regional health service subsequently confirmed the councillor's Facebook post but couldn't say when the service would be ready
"The ambulance has to be put out to tender and then plans drawn up for running the emergency department," sources at the Junta said
opposition politicians have criticised the move
Esperanza Oña of the PP claimed that it was a "deceitful electoral move" and questioning whether the promise would be kept once the regional elections were over

Former Huddersfield gymnast and pub landlord Brian Hayhurst and his wife Elaine are ex-pats who have lived just outside Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol for 20 years
He writes every fortnight for Huddersfield Hub
Our first glimpse of the beautiful former fishing village of La Cala de Mijas was from the back of a taxi in 1985 as we sped down the notorious N340
which then had no central barriers and was once named the most dangerous road in Europe
We were heading for Club del Sol to see Elaine’s son Simon
This was long before the A7 dual carriageway
and the N340 went straight through this sleepy town passing a rundown 24-hour clinic ruin and a derelict building which is now a modern chemist
How things have changed so dramatically over those past 35 years or so
making it a thriving much sought after resort
La Cala – once termed ‘the jewel in the crown’ – is situated between Benalmadena and Marbella on the Costa del Sol
work and enjoy holidays here is indeed spectacular
La Cala – previously called La Cala de Moral (Bay of Mulberries)
and recent finds on sites have revealed ceramics and artefacts from the Bronze and Iron Ages
Documents show there was slavery by Christian troops in 1487
is now a firm tourist favourite on the Costa with 4,000 registered residents
In the early years the La Cala coastline was frequently attacked by Berberiscos – North African pirates
authorised the building of a series of towers along the coastline
one of which is a well-preserved central attraction in the La Cala plaza
close to the beach and with an interesting history
Built in 1773 it was used to house a dozen soldiers over two floors
two large cannons and had beacons on its roof to warn other garrisons of impending enemy attacks
Although there is no evidence of cannon windows facing the Med
In 1841 Mijas officially separated from Fuengirola becoming an independent district
The first official La Cala census in 1866 showed 10 inhabitants who were mainly fishermen or grape and berry farmers
the agricultural activities were brought to a standstill when a deadly phylloxera plague wiped out all growth
leaving workers and families on the brink of starvation
In the early 60s the unexpected but welcomed tourist boom began in earnest
as celebrities began to descend on the miles of beautiful beaches
Many owners of rural properties and acres of land sold to developers and farmers began working in the flourishing construction sector in readiness for the immense growth of the tourist boom
This bustling town now offers many cultural
ready for literally millions of tourists all year round along with the growing number of potential home finders to enjoy
As holiday makers sit on pristine beaches sipping an ice cold beer
would they have ever thought that those beaches were regularly invaded by pirates
We hope the infrastructure will cope with the extensive developments on the outskirts

I must mention and thank the hundreds of firefighters who relentlessly tackled the horrendous wild fires here in recent days
And finally my thanks to The Mijas Foreigners Department for their help with information in compiling this article
