one of the most modern and versatile venues in France
will serve as the epicentre for Para swimming events during the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games
the venue has been meticulously adapted to host Olympic and Paralympic swimming events
the indoor stadium welcomed 35 medal events during the Olympics and will see 141 Paralympic champions crowned this year
will accommodate up to 15,000 spectators during the Games
Normally a rugby stadium for its home team
the arena took 60 days to be transformed in the Aquatics Centre
The handover to Paris 2024 happened in May after a series of US superstar Taylo Swift concerts
The Para swimming action will kick off on 29 August at 9:30 AM (Local Time) with the men’s 400m freestyle S9 heats
The Para swimming programme concludes on 7 September with the mixed 4x100m freestyle 34 points relay final set to take place at 8:27 PM
constructed from stainless steel and designed as modular kits
with one being relocated to Sevran and half of another pool to Bagnolet
This plan ensures a lasting sporting legacy
providing local communities with new facilities for swimming education and practice
the arena is easily accessible via public transport
It is well-connected by the Paris Metro (Line 1)
The surrounding area offers ample parking for those driving to the event
as well as nearby hotels and dining options for visitors
Paris La Défense Arena is committed to sustainability and environmental responsibility
the venue will implement eco-friendly practices such as energy-efficient lighting

There were a number of reasons for this change of direction: in the past
Olympic pools with a capacity of 15,000 have become white elephants because they are too big
We thought about building a pool with a demountable section
With this in mind, the Paris 2024 organisers turned their attention to existing venues capable of accommodating 15,000 people. "Paris La Défense Arena was the most reasonable and efficient choice
and the gymnastics were moved to the Bercy Arena"
Picture by Aurélien Meunier/Getty ImagesA rugby stadium - Racing 92 is its resident club - and a concert hall in its day-to-day life
the infrastructure has nevertheless had to undergo a major transformation in order to accommodate two pools
each filled with 2.5 million litres of water
"There's an undeniable modularity and versatility that allows us to do lots of things
such as drilling holes in the walls of the building to accommodate our TV and energy cables
and also converting a technical room into a swimming pool area
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Myrtha Pools (@myrtha_pools)
a number of stages were necessary: fixing a large amount of equipment such as cameras and lights to the roof of the building
then laying the footprints of the pools on the ground
building the pools and constructing the media stand
and therefore the two pools (training and competition)
"It took almost 20 kilometres of scaffolding to build it
it is 22 metres high and will house 1,000 media
The most sensitive challenge was the co-activity between the different trades
They had to learn to work together because we couldn't work consecutively." Worker safety was also a key concern
with one being installed in Sevran and half a pool in Bagnolet
This re-use is part of a circular economy approach
so that local residents can benefit from new facilities for learning and practising swimming
Picture by Raphaël Lafargue / www.raphaellafargue.comFinally, on the night of 4 to 5 August, Denis Navizet's staff will have 9 hours in which to change the Paris La Défense Arena - which will host more than 700,000 spectators during the competition - from a swimming race configuration to a water polo configuration
"We've already planned everything"
who is clearly not worried about the new challenge ahead

American musician Lenny Kravitz performed in front of 45,000 spectators at Paris La Défense Arena this Saturday
A concert lasting more than two hours that left his fans utterly speechless
The show ran for over two hours… and the crowd looked even more exhausted than the main character of the night: Lenny Kravitz
the American musician brought his explosive set to a close with a twenty-minute rendition of Let Love Rule
a track from his self-titled debut album released in September 1989
he had already ended his show with the same track
leaving his guitar on a stand before stepping off the stage and making his way through the dazed crowd like a new-age prophet
He even climbed up into the farthest tiers
Multicolored lights bathed the star and his swirling dreadlocks
This Saturday, March 29th, in front of 45,000 people at Paris La Défense Arena
Lenny Kravitz unveiled the hits from Blue Electric Light
Pure rock laced with funk and soul—a formula he’s mastered
The opening act was handled by French singer and bassist Adi Oasis
But the audience also got a surprise appearance from Richard Ashcroft
the global ambassador for Yves Saint Laurent Beauté’s Y fragrance line—especially Y L’Elixir—thrilled fans with his signature songs
we once again saw the gestures of this sixty-something performer who’s hard to fault
there’s no denying the performance was phenomenal
the name “Lenny Kravitz” was finally etched into Hollywood Boulevard
The singer unveiled his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
the renowned Los Angeles sidewalk featuring plaques honoring artists from across the entertainment world
He will soon be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Lenny Kravitz remains that flawlessly cool figure everyone admires

Despite their team kit and swim gear being a bit of a tell all, it wasn’t easy to determine who had been in the water, as half the audience sat in their wet clothes and ponchos having being drenched by the Parisian rain.
As the crowds grew it was clear that no amount of bad weather was going to dampen the good vibes in this modern architectural marvel. And with the cheers and collective energy of thousands of spectators bouncing off the water and walls, and Martin Solveig and Dragonette’s I Just Came to Say Hello booming out at top volume, all of the ingrediants were united for another beautiful night in the Paralympic pool.
Picture by Taylor Mooney / Paris 2024Flags big and small fluttered in the stands
and conversations in countless languages blended into a vibrant hum
this wasn't just about the competition—it was a celebration of the extraordinary resilience and spirit of the Para athletes who had come here to make history
the atmosphere in the arena shifted slightly
replaced by focused anticipation as all eyes turned to the pool
Silence descended for the very first time of the evening
First up was the men's 100m Freestyle category S5
The crowd’s excitement reached fever pitch as the Para athletes plunged into the pool
and every stroke was accompanied by a chorus of gasps and cheers
The audience applauded throughout the race
and then for a solid three minutes afterward – long enough to roll over into the beginning of the next final – the women’s 100m freestyle category S5
Just as I thought the venue had reached full decibels
the men’s 200m individual medley category SM6
brought an entirely new level of excitement as China’s Yang Hong and Columbia’s Nelson Crispin Corzo fought for gold
Hong took the gold medal -- China’s sixth gold medal so far in these Paralympic Games
but every single race has been emotional to witness and unbelievably heartwarming to be a part of
The rythm was relentless and there was no time at all for spectators to catch their breath as medal ceremonies followed races
Every new national anthem brought with it a new set of emotions
and I was close to tears – or if I’m honest – all the way to tears
There's no holding back when the emotions of these unique athletes and the spectators are combined
This isn’t a case of ‘you had to be there’ to get it
I’m sure those who watched events unfold from their homes; at Paris fanzones; or on live blogs
Spectators at these Paralympics have a common understanding of the feelings that come with witnessing history in the making and a genuine sense of enlightenment
Haffey/Getty ImagesThe events were now coming thick and fast
accompanied by the same theme tune as before
but now embellished with rhythmic clapping from the audience and even the athletes themselves
And every new starting signal is accompanied by a unified cheer from the stands
pushing the Para athletes forward with their collective energy
The tension in the air is almost tangible as each swimmer glides through the water
their movements a powerful demonstration of skill
I suspect a few ear drums had already burst when Hector Danayer was presented with a silver medal for the men's 100m breaststroke category SB9
and Alex Portal received his bronze medal for the mens 100m backstroke category S13
Despite the insanely vibrant cheers for the men
the home crowd didn't limit their cheering to just French Para athletes
Every athlete was celebrated by everyone in the crowd
the tension in the arena was replaced by a wave of jubilation and applause
The atmosphere in the Paris La Défense Arena is one of collective pride and inspiration
The athletes have not only competed at the highest level
but they have also inspired countless people with their resilience and determination
leave the arena with a sense of having witnessed something truly special—a celebration of human potential
where the limits of what is possible are reimagined and redefined
Public space at La Défense features more than 5,600 items of urban furniture and a wide variety of ground surfaces
the Atlas of urban ground surfaces and furniture at La Défense locates and maps all these elements which have been installed over the years
raised above the natural ground level has been developed
the esplanade of La Défense is known and reputed to be the largest open-air museum in Europe
over time an urban laboratory has been added to this museum dimension
evolving as architectural projects have shaped the area and its functionality for residents and other users
Each development project has played a role in its dynamics
a heterotopia furnished with a multiplicity of objects that
have never been mapped or listed in detail
Careful observation of existing ground surfaces and furniture provides both insight into the successive transformations that have taken place and keys for considering how this space can be adapted to the challenges of tomorrow
The Atlas lists and maps the 200 types of different ground surface coverings
organised under three main categories : sealed (51%)
raised paving systems (41%) and directly laid paving (5%)
It also classifies and locates the 5,670 items of urban furniture
16 fountains and various types of signs according to their group of usage
with for example 38 types of lighting masts
47 sorts of benches and 8 designs for bicycle racks
The Atlas of ground surfaces and urban furniture at La Défense is part of a larger project to transform and decarbonise the area
led by the public establishment Paris La Défense
the Atlas opens up new possibilities for adapting the public space to ecological challenges and improving sustainability and access to the area while at the same time meeting the new expectations of people using it

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin met with his Chinese counterpart for more than an hour Friday
as the two countries seek to repair lines of communications between their militaries that could be critical as tensions continue to rise between the two in the Indo-Pacific region
The meeting behind closed doors between Austin and Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun was the first in person between the top defense officials since contacts between the American and Chinese militaries broke down in 2022 after then-U.S
It came on the sidelines of the Shangri-La defense forum
government leaders and diplomats from around the world
whose country has had escalating hostilities with China in the disputed South China Sea
underscored the dangers of the regional flashpoint at the forum
If a Filipino gets killed in the conflict “by a willful act,” he said
very close to what we define as an act of war.”
“That would certainly increase the level of response,” Marcos said
who is due to address the conference on Saturday
reiterated the American position to Dong during their talks
“The secretary made clear that the United States will continue to fly
and operate -- safely and responsibly -- wherever international law allows,” Ryder said
“He underscored the importance of respect for high seas freedom of navigation guaranteed under international law
hosted by the International Institute for Strategic Studies
He restated concerns over a new law issued by China giving its coast guard license to seize foreign ships “that illegally enter China’s territorial waters” and to detain foreign crews for up to 60 days
The same law also made new reference to 2021 legislation that says China’s coast guard can fire upon foreign ships if necessary
“Attempts to apply domestic laws and regulation beyond one’s territory and jurisdiction violate international law
exacerbate tensions and undermine regional peace and security,” Marcos said
With Philippines ships now regularly confronted by the Chinese
there are concerns that a low-level confrontation could lead to an escalation
a professor of international law at the Singapore Management University
“And I think the last thing that countries in the region would want
particularly as they focus on the post-pandemic recovery
would be to have a regional conflict at the doorstep.”
China regards Taiwan as a renegade province that must come under its control
does not have formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan but is bound by its own laws to provide the island with the means to defend itself
Austin reiterated that the United States remains committed to the one-China policy
but “expressed concern” about the recent Chinese exercises
Austin told Dong that China “should not use Taiwan’s political transition -- part of a normal
routine democratic process -- as a pretext for coercive measures,” Ryder said
have been gradually restoring defense contacts since they broke down over Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan
and Austin and Dong already talked with each other by video conference in April
Austin emphasized the importance of keeping open lines of military-to-military communication between American and Chinese commanders
and said “both sides will resume telephone conversations between theater commanders in the coming months,” Ryder said
Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian told reporters after the meeting that it showed the decline in military relations had now stabilized and that the resumption of direct communications was an important step
“The communications between the two militaries aims to enhance understanding
accumulate mutual trust and achieve stability in relations,” he said
a Chinese security and defense expert with the International Institute for Strategic Studies
said that while the resumption of direct communications is important
talking is the minimum that should be expected of two great powers
Direct military communications will only be effective if Chinese leaders give their commanders the “political leeway to respond in the moment,” Nouwens cautioned
“We have to remember that there is a different political system in each of these two countries and therefore the commanders do not necessarily operate in the same way
or have the same level of political ability to make decisions in the moment or respond,” she said
Austin is due to address the forum Saturday morning

This article is part of a monthly series of short essays on some of the greatest buildings of the 20th Century. Read John Pardey’s introduction to the series here
but as a monument to humanity rather than military victories”
a new programme of civic works was undertaken by President François Mitterrand following the success of his predecessor
Valéry d’Estaing and his project for the Centre Georges Pompidou
designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers
Mitterrand’s Grands Projets were to include the reimagining of the Louvre by I.M. Pei, the Bibliothèque national by Dominique Perrault, the Opera Bastille by Carlos Ott, Bernard Tschumi’s Parc de la Villette, Nouvel’s Arab World Institute – and Johan Otto von Spreckelsen’s Grande Arche
yet his Grande Arche in Paris is world renowned
he was “an architect who built four churches and one arche.”
Between 1960 and 1981 he did indeed build four churches – and each is a little gem
using primary geometries in plan (one being triangle and three being squares) and exposed brick that clearly owe a debt to the work of Louis Kahn
Born in 1929 just as Corbusier was completing his seminal Villa Savoye
graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen where he became a professor and later
the competition for a new landmark building in a major city was to prove to be a pyrrhic victory that he was to incur a huge personal cost – and he too never saw the finished building
Paris is a city laid out along political lines with Napoleon III’s urban planning system masterminded by Georges-Eugène Haussmann from 1853 that saw medieval neighbourhoods demolished and wide avenues
squares and parks superimposed upon the city
This radical surgery not only caused major upheavals and resistance from the poorer denizens of the city
horses and carts – also allowing the military to quickly mobilise and move in on any civil uprisings
boulevards – strikes a straight line from the Place de la Concorde
north-westwards through the Arc de Triomphe across the Seine
to the new business district of Paris called La Défense
La Défense was to become the equivalent of London’s Canary Wharf: a cluster of tall office buildings on the edge of the city centre
Pei to design a landmark building to terminate the axis from the Arc de Triomphe in the ‘70s and his design was a pair of towers
connected by an inverted ‘U’ shaped form; naturally
it was given the nickname of ‘The Tuning Fork’
until the global recession in the latter part of the decade halted major building works
a competition for a new international communications centre was announced
calling for a building “to bring to the business quarter the cultural dimension and the animation necessary to its completion” and mark the anniversary of the French Revolution
Speckelsen’s singular design was announced as the unanimous winner
even despite the fact that the competition brief imposed a maximum height of 35 metres and his design was 100 metres high
Speckelsen’s design was hugely well received
“the project appears remarkable by its purity
by the force with which it gives another offshoot to Paris’s historical axis
he was away when the call came to inform him of his win
and it was days before he returned from holiday to hear the news
Spreckelsen’s masterstroke was to conceive of a 100-metre hollow cube in glistening marble – so simple in form it could have been a child’s toy
This form was given elegance by chamfering the internal returns of the sides and top by 45 degrees
in turn presenting a sharp edge to the front and rear of the arche
so the chamfered return became a grand staircase that led up to the open public square
large enough to enclose Notre Dame Cathedral – to Spreckelsen
it was an open door to the north of Paris and beyond
French law meant that this relatively unknown architect had to team up with the French practice of Paul Andreau
tensions were to quickly raise in setting an academic and visionary architect against a commercial practice (today commonly referred to as an ‘executive architect’)
And while La Grande Arche appeared rudimentary in form
such simplicity demanded complexity in detail and delivery
The site was already occupied by a metro station and motorway
so the building was offset by 6.35 degrees and needed co-ordination of a 300,000-tonne concrete structure; 80,000 square feet of office space for different users; 37 floors above ground
five below; three hectares of marble facades and ground-breaking panoramic lifts that glided up thin steel rails
The concrete structure designed by engineer Erik Reitzel
was stupendous – six foundation piles each side of the arche (each pile able to take the weight of four Eiffel Towers) supporting the floor slabs each side
9.5 meters tall and weighing 2000 tons each
the entire building could in theory be flipped sideways or upside down and still stand – just like a child’s toy
Spreckelsen endured several years of a painful back and forth in process and politics — and as an academic
was unable to compromise to the levels the process demanded
something that culminated in his resignation in July 1986 – just as had happened on Utzon’s Opera House
But Spreckelsen’s vision of a pristine white hollow cube prevailed through all the painful birth of this monumental building
He died the following year without ever seeing his masterpiece completed
It is hard to think of a commercial building that that really exceeds its typology to become true architecture – perhaps Wright’s Larkin Building from 1906
Rogers’ Lloyds of London – and the Grande Arche
the latter not only hinting at a symbolic meaning
