bounced around the calendar searching for its identity
finally linking up with Liège-Bastogne-Liège first on the same weekend in 1951

First raced on a course from Tournai to Liège
La Flèche Wallonne went through a watershed moment in 1985
when it moved its finish line to the summit of the Mur de Huy
This year’s 89th edition will be the 41st time that the race culminates on an ascent that immediately earned a spot among the toughest climbs in pro cycling
with the Côte d'Ereffe adding another level of difficulty
the Mur de Huy is almost always the deciding climb from a large group
Alejandro Valverde holds the record of victories with five
and won four in a row between 2014 and 2017. The Spaniard won both Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège three times (2006
2017) but has never won all three Ardennes Classics
In 2023, Tadej Pogačar made it two out of three in the Ardennes Classics

Kévin Vauquelin (Arkéa-Samsic) was second and Maxim Van Gils (Lotto-Dstny) third

Picture by A.S.O./Pauline BalletBy Olympics.comWorld champion Tadej Pogacar launched a late attack on the final climb up the Mur de Huy to win the 2025 Flèche Wallonne on Wednesday (23 April).
The Slovenian went clear as the peloton jostled for position up the steep mur, with no-one else able to respond to his powerful break.
Pogacar won in 4 hours 50 minutes 15 seconds to make up for frustrating results at both Paris-Roubaix and the Amstel Gold Race.
Behind him, Kévin Vauquelin broke free of the remaining pack and held off a late surge from Tom Pidcock to cross the line in second, 10 seconds behind Pogacar. Pidcock was third.

Tadej Pogacar reminded everyone exactly who’s boss on Wednesday with a dominant display on the Mur de Huy
claiming his second career win at La Flèche Wallonne
The Slovenian superstar powered away from the world’s best climbers on the final ascent
explosive acceleration that left no room for doubt—and no rider able to follow
but as a cyclist you don't like it so much
such a tough finish," said the Team UAE Emirates leader
the weather wasn't so good but winning again is all that counts
We worked well as a team today and we'll have a similar one for Sunday at Liège," said the 26-year-old
who won at Liège last year in the absence of the injured Remco Evenepoel
Wednesday's race culminated with the fearsome Mur de Huy
just 1.3km in length but with gradients hitting 19 percent and an average of 9.6
Pogacar said he attacked when he saw Irishman Ben Healy
So I accelerated and when I looked over my shoulder
But really that's the hardest kilometre in cycling," he added
The final climb was billed as a showdown between Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel
had no answer when the world champion hit the gas
Rain and slick roads caused multiple crashes—including one that ended Mattias Skjelmose’s chances after his Amstel Gold Race heroics
Defending champion Stephen Williams and 2022 winner Dylan Teuns also dropped out before the finale
featuring a trio of Norwegians and three Belgians including Ruben Apers
was reeled in well before the final climbs
As the peloton hit the final steep kilometers
Evenepoel faded in the final meters and had to settle for ninth
Pogacar bounces back from his Amstel Gold Race defeat in the most emphatic way possible
The Ardennes triple now looms—and he’s looking stronger than ever

After an unpredictable Amstel Gold Race last weekend
the likes of Demi Vollering and Kasia Niewiadoma will be keen to make amends in this mid-week Classic
and her former teammate Demi Vollering has also conquered the Mur before
Both of these riders will be back fighting for the title of Queen of Huy in 2025
Last weekend’s edition of Amstel Gold Race has shown us that the big favourites aren’t necessarily guaranteed to have a shot at the win – they need to control the breakaway’s chances first
SD Worx-Protime took the victory in the Netherlands on Saturday but with Mischa Bredewold (not the rider from the team most would have expected to come out on top.) The 24-year-old was part of an early break which almost all of the pre-race favourites missed – the likes of Vollering
Elisa Longo-Borghini and Kasia Niewiadoma were left fighting for minor places behind
Will they let the same thing happen again in Flèche Wallonne
La Flèche Wallonne Femmes 2025 route (Image: ASO)
With an undulating 140-kilometre route to get through before the final Mur de Huy showdown
there are plenty of springboards for attacks if any opportunistic breakaway riders want to take their chances
The first ascent of the Mur comes with just over 35-kilometres to go until the finish
so favourites will need to remain alert here to any moves
There are two other key climbs on the finishing circuit: the Côte d'Ereffe and Côte de Cherave which are both steep and short
so if we see the same type of explosive racing we did at Amstel last weekend
we can expect fireworks here from those who aren’t content to leave things down to a final sprint up the Mur
Canyon//SRAM’s Kasia Niewiadoma comes to this race as defending champion following her victory here in 2024
but she has a flying SD Worx-Protime squad to contend with
The Dutch squad’s Amstel Gold winner Bredewold is taking to the start at Flèche
as are both seven-time winner Van der Breggen and world champion Lotte Kopecky
FDJ-Suez will also be desperate to get things right for Demi Vollering who will know she has a chance if they get her to the base of the Huy in a good position
and the same goes for UAE Team AQQ’s Elisa Longo Borghini
struggled to control the races in the past in order to give their team leader a shot at fighting for the win
This happened at Amstel Gold Race last weekend when Vollering ended up finishing 20th from the group behind the breakaway
a result she won’t be satisfied with as a former winner of that race
FDJ-Suez do appear to be flexible when it comes to adjusting their race plans if Vollering isn’t in contention for victory
and they have plenty of other options when it comes to riders who can go for their own chances when asked
Juliette Labous proved this with her fourth place at Amstel after a day in the break and she is suited to Flèche
finishing seventh at this race last season
Elise Chabbey is a rider who the team could send in the early break to force other teams to chase
while Évita Muzic will also be looking for her opportunity given she finished in fourth place at Flèche in 2024
Vollering will certainly be ‘plan A’ for the French team
but this season so far has shown us that it is unlikely to be that simple
Niewiadoma didn't make the winning breakaway at Amstel Gold Race and came in with the chase group
She will not want the same thing to happen at Flèche Wallonne — a race with a finish so perfectly suited to her
Neve Bradbury will be in a key support role for Niewiadoma on the weekend and she looked strong in the breakaway during Amstel despite eventually being unable to contest the final following Bredewold’s move
Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig is also a rider who we would normally consider a favourite for Flèche as the Danish rider has repeatedly performed well on the punchy climbs of the Ardennes
though she doesn’t look to be in her best form currently so will likely be a domestique for Niewiadoma
Canyon//SRAM are in need of a result to boost morale
and Wednesday’s race is a big chance for the German team
Four years have passed since Van der Breggen took her seventh Flèche Wallonne win – the one most of us believed would be her final victory here before her retirement
the SD Worx-Protime rider has since made an unprecedented comeback
returning to the peloton with a bang at the start of this season
She has since proven her ability to race with the very best on her day
finishing second at Strade Bianche behind Vollering back in March
Van der Breggen has looked to slightly be struggling with her form — she played a team role in Amstel Gold Race by setting a blistering pace in the early stages of the race and then abandoning
her performances on the Mur de Huy each year mean that the Dutchwoman can certainly not be counted out for a historic eighth win on Wednesday
SD Worx-Protime has plenty of options when it comes to picking a team leader for Flèche
Amstel winner Bredewold is back and will be motivated and confident after what she was able to do last weekend
while Lotte Kopecky is another rider who could perform well on the punchy climbs of Flèche if she brings her climbing legs
Lorena Wiebes also takes to the start but it is likely that the Mur will be too difficult for the European champion
and we are expecting SD Worx to put all of their resources behind supporting Van der Breggen for victory
It has been a rollercoaster few weeks for Elisa Longo Borghini – she was in what looked to be her career-best form ahead of the Tour of Flanders but crashed out of the race and was forced to take some rest afterwards
Longo Borghini has already taken a win; she rode away from the peloton at De Brabantse Pijl a few weeks ago which is proof that the enforced rest due to her concussion hasn’t impacted her performance too much
It wasn’t to be for the UAE Team ADQ rider at Amstel Gold Race as she played a support role for her teammate Silvia Persico who made it into the winning breakaway and finished a respectable fifth place
Longo Borghini was on the podium at Flèche Wallonne last season so will know how well this finish suits her if she can make it there in the front group
It will be important that UAE Team ADQ have enough collective strength to support their Italian team leader as she battles the inevitable attacks from those who want to split things up before the final climb
Longo Borghini has struggled in the past being isolated against strong SD Worx or FDJ-Suez teammates
so this could be her downfall on Wednesday if her team doesn’t have strength in numbers when it matters
Movistar’s Liane Lippert has been having a quietly impressive season so far
with a sixth place at Dwars door Vlaanderen and a third place at the Tour of Flanders
She finished second at La Flèche Wallonne in 2023 so knows what she can do on this course
and she was second to Vollering in the sprint from the chase group at Amstel Gold Race last weekend
Lippert has been vocal on numerous occasions about how much she enjoys the hilly Classics
and she showed herself to be one of the best puncheurs of the peloton at Flanders
coming close to dropping eventual race winner Kopecky on a couple of occasions
Lippert will need to ensure she gets her tactics right on Wednesday if she wants to beat the best on the Mur de Huy
however — timing is everything on the final ascent
Movistar have been vocal about wanting to act as the aggressors this season
and they had representation in Amstel’s winning breakaway with Dutch rider Mareille Meijering
While their attacking racing style is admirable
Lippert will need full support to help her to the bottom of the Mur on Sunday
and the likes of Meijering should focus on this task to have their best chance of a team result at Flèche
22-year-old Puck Pieterse has simultaneously had one of the most impressive and most frustrating seasons so far
coming close to victory on so many occasions but regularly just missing out
She is yet to finish outside the top-10 so far this year
proving both her consistency and endurance despite still being such a young rider
She came her closest to a win so far last weekend with her third place finish at Amstel Gold Race which will have given her confidence ahead of Flèche Wallonne — she made it into the breakaway but just missed Bredewold’s winning move
Pieterse’s downfall in the past has been doing too much work too soon in the race
something she will undoubtedly learn to improve with more experience
The ascent of the Mur in Flèche will be a true test of the Fenix-Deceuninck rider’s patience and it is her first time ever competing in this race which could hold her back when it comes to knowing where to time her move on the Mur
Pieterse has shown she should never be underestimated
While they are without a key favourite for this race
Lidl-Trek is a team which should not be forgotten when it comes to Flèche Wallonne
Gaia Realini should thrive on this sort of terrain if she can be positioned well
Noemi Rüegg of EF Education-Oatly is one to watch after her third place at Milan-Sanremo where she proved her climbing abilities on short ascents
Marta Cavalli of Picnic-PostNL is a former winner of La Flèche Wallonne and although she has spent the last few years coming back from a serious crash
she looks to steadily be returning to her old self
Silke Smulders of Liv-Alula Jayco is another punchy rider who will be looking at her chances here
as will Kimberley Le Court from AG Insurance-Soudal Team
if Pieterse isn’t the team’s protected leader
Yara Kastelijn of Fenix-Deceuninck could also perform well on this terrain
We think that FDJ-Suez and Demi Vollering will be able to get things right on Wednesday and that the Dutch rider will be able to ride to her second win of the season at La Flèche Wallonne

On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, cycling’s biggest stars return to the roads of Belgium as they battle for victory in the 89th edition of La Fleche Wallone
French for “The Walloon Arrow,” this mid-week event is the second of three Ardennes Classics
The first of three Ardennes Classics was the Amstel Gold Race on April 20
I highly recommend watching highlights on YouTube as it ended in a thrilling fashion
Mattias Skjelmose outsprinted Remco Evenepoel and Tadej Pogacar for the win
Pogacar was the big favorite for the Amstel Gold
Evenepoel returned to action last week after a lengthy hiatus from the sport to recover from injuries
The third Ardennes Classic race will be on Sunday
Pogacar is expected to compete in that event as well
With that said, let’s take a look at the latest cycling odds, courtesy of the top sports betting sites
and make our La Fleche Wallone predictions
The usual international outlets are expected to cover La Fleche Wallone including Eurorsport
The 2025 edition of La Fleche Wallone has a new start to the race as the peloton departs from Ciney
The riders will traverse 205.2km across Wallonia
This famous climb is often the deciding factor in who wins the race
there are 11 climbs that the riders will have to race over
they will face the Mur three times in a circuit over the last 37.2km
Cote de Cherave (which was absent in the 2024 race)
and the Mur de Huy comprise the grueling final circuit
The 2024 La Fleche Wallone came in at 199.1km
roughly six km shorter than this year’s edition
It also went from Charleroi to Huy instead of Ciney
The race was won by Stephen Williams of Israel-Premier Tech
The British cyclists outdueld Kevin Vauquelin
Benoit Cosnefroy and Santiago Buitrago on the Mur to win the race
Check out the latest La Fleche Wallone odds:
As expected, Tadej Pogacar is the large betting favorite to win this race. The big surprise is that Thibau Nys edged out Remco Evenepoel for the second betting favorite spot. Furthermore, after Mattias Skjelmose, the cycling odds fall off a cliff. The top handicappers are siding with Pogacar to win
Keep reading to see who we think wins this race
Let’s take a look at the odds-on favorites to win the 2025 La Fleche Wallone:
Although Tadej Pogacar was pipped at the line by Skjelmose in the Amstel Gold Race
he continued a torrid streak of finishing on the podium in every race he’s competed in for the 2025 season
It was his second consecutive finish as runner-up. Pogacar was also the runner up at Paris-Roubaix the week prior. In that race, he was second to Mathiue van der Poel who also beat him at Milan-San Remo a few weeks prior
In-between those results, the Slovenian dominated Tour of Flanders
It was his third race win of the season as he also won the UAE Tour in February
Pogacar had an impressive victory at Strade-Bianche this year where he crashed late in the race
and rode away from the field to win the event
this will be his 6th appearance in the La Fleche Wallone
and failed to crack the Top 8 in the rest of his appearances
I fully expect a tactically smarter Pogacar on Wednesday
after he blew the win in the Amstel Gold Race following a long solo breakaway
I am surprised that Thibau Nys is listed higher than Evenepoel with the oddsmakers
That makes little sense to me considering Remco has looked great in his first two races back this season
Nys won the Miguel Indurain but then finished 37th in the Tour of Basque Country
Nys was one of the betting favorites for the Amstel Gold Race last weekend
I feel that we’re going to see something similar for Nys in the La Fleche Wallone as well
As long as everyone is healthy and avoid injuries
I don’t believe Nys is a real contender to win or place on the podium
I would fade Nys for his debut Wallone race
The Olympic Champion has been nothing short of amazing in his 2025 season so far
He debuted last week at the Brabantse Pijl and outsprinted Wout van Aert for the victory
It was an incredible start to his season after a lengthy hiatus due to a training injury last December
Evenepoel overcame an early crash within the field
to chase down Pogacar in the final 40km of the race
it was an impressive performance from the Belgian who was clearly the strongest rider on the day
Now, he turns his attention towards La Fleche Wallone, which Evenepoel commented on following the Amstel Gold Race:
“The approach to the Mur de Huy has become more difficult than in previous editions
So we can take a different approach and hopefully get something done there
We won’t take Thibau Nys to Huy on a free ride
I’m already happy that we’re in good shape with the team
But I’m taking it day by day: now I’m going to recover for two days.”
As long as he isn’t suffering too much from his Amstel Gold crash
Evenepoel should be a factor in the La Fleche Wallone on Wednesday
It will be his second appearance in this Ardennes Classic after a 43rd in 2022
What an incredible performance by Mattias Skjelmose in the Amstel Gold Race. The Danish rider thought he was just racing for a podium spot
but was able to pull off one the biggest upsets in recent memory:
Already the podium would be a really good result for me
I tried to keep the group going so they didn’t come back from behind
I was shocked when Skjelmose won the Amstel Gold. However, I wasn’t surprised with a podium finish. I had the Danish rider as my pick to win the Tour of Basque Country due to his value compared to the safe bet in Joa Almeida
he wasn’t on great form and finished 5th overall
Yet, it was a nice bounce back from his DNF at Paris-Nice where the 24-year-old had two top five stage results before a DNF on Stage 7
Skjelmose was also 2nd in the Faun Drome Classic and 6th in the Faun-Ardeche Classic
This will be Skjelmose’s 4th appearance in La Fleche Wallone
Skjelmose could be a factor in this race as well
The following cyclists offer the best betting value based on their current La Fleche Wallone odds
Although he’s had some “average” results over the last month
Tom Pidcock has had a successful season so far
The talented Brit is leading a small team (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) and doesn’t have the support that other leaders have
Pidcock was 9th in the Amstel Gold, missed the breakaway at Brabantse Pijl where he finished 11th, and was 40th at Milano-San Remo. However, he was 6th at Tirreno-Adriatico after finishing second to Pogacar at Strade-Bianche
Pidcock’s best results were three stage wins and a victory at the AlUla Tour in January
he has more wins on his resume this year than some of these other contenders
The Brit has yet to crack the Top 5 in his four previous appearances at La Fleche Wallone
But he also scored two DNFs in 2022 and 2024
I doubt he stays with Pogacar and Evenepoel on the Mur
but Pidcock should be a Top 10 rider this week
Stephen Williams won the 2024 edition of La Fleche Wallone
that wasn’t the only win of his 2024 season
Williams also won the Tour Down Under and the Tour of Britain last year
Unfortunately, Williams hasn’t carried over the success from 2024 into this season as of yet. He was 53rd in the Tour Down Under and 50th in the Il Giro d’Abruzzo
These are underwhelming results for a rider with Williams’ potential
you can clearly see his evolution as a cyclist
Williams is definitely a longshot this week to win again
I don’t see him on the same level as the favorites or even the second-tier riders for this race
stranger things have happened in cycling this year so far
These cyclists are considered longshots to win La Fleche Wallone on Wednesday:
I was high on Marc Hirschi heading into Amstel Gold as I thought he could put together a Top 10 performance
that wasn’t the case ahs Hirschi finished 40th
It was another disappointment for the 26-year-old who has the potential to win these classics
Outside of 4th in the Faun Drome Classic and 6th in the Miguel Indurain
Hirschi has et to finish in the Top 10 for a major race
I am still waiting for Hirschi’s legs to improve so that we see the Swiss cyclist competing for the podium
I think he has an outside shot at that this week
but it will take a number of things to break his way
but the legs have yet to reach his level of talent we’re accustomed to seeing
The American cyclist continues to impress in 2025
In addition to winning the Dwars door Vlaanderen in impressive fashion
beating out three Visma riders including van Aert
Neilson Powless was also 7th at Pijl and 13th in the Amstel Gold Race
his next best results were 4th at Trofeo Laigueglia and 6th at Algarve
This marks Powless’ third appearance in the La Fleche Wallone
The American didn’t compete in last year’s race
With the way that Powless has been riding this year
along with a number of upsets over the last few months
it’s not impossible for the 28-year-old to pull off another upset
he will be a Top 10 rider with a Top 5 ceiling
This race should come down to the same trio of riders as the Amstel Gold Race: Pogacar
I don’t see Skjelmose sneaking up and winning the sprint
I believe Pogacar and Evenepoel will make it very difficult on the final circuit of the race
I expect Pogacar to win this race since he’s the better pure climber compared to Evenepoel
don’t bet the house on Pogacar but you can bet with confidence that he bounces back from two runner ups to win this event
require you to pick which rider will finish with the best result:
This cycling matchup isn’t fair at all
Pogacar is a far better overall cyclist than Nys is despite the latter brimming with potential
Pogacar should win this race unless he crashes or has a monumental collapse similar to Amstel Gold
Nys will be lucky to finish in the Top 10 and challenge for a Top 5 finish
so stick with Pogacar’s race-winning moneyline instead
I couldn’t resist picking this head-to-head wager
These two men rode the last 40+ km of Amstel Gold chasing after Pogacar
and then Sjkelmose won in a sprint against the other two men
he’s coming into this race with a ton of confidence
I don’t believe he will duplicate his Amstel Gold success in La Fleche Wallone
I see Evenepoel getting revenge by finishing higher than Skjelmose and challenging Pogacar for the race win
Alejandro Valverde holds the record for the most La Fleche Wallone wins with five
Five riders are second with three wins including Julian Alaphilippe and The GOAT Eddy Merckx
The following is a list of the recent La Fleche Wallone winners:

Multi-discipline champion Puck Pieterse (Alpecin-Deceuninck) attacked on the last 150 metres near the top of the iconic Mur de Huy to win Flèche Wallonne Femmes

Demi Vollering (FDJ-Suez) could not match the acceleration and finished third
Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE Team ADQ) finished third
holding off a surge by defending champion Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney (Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto)
finishing on the leg-breaking Mur de Huy. Once again this year
April 23 the start of the 28th edition will take place after the men's race so that the women can finish about an hour after the men in front of the huge crowds on the Mur
Beginning in 1998, the race has highlighted the top talent of the women's peloton, from three-time winner Fabiana Luperini and five-time winner Marianne Vos to the outright record holder and consecutive victory record holder Anna van der Breggen
who won seven straight times from 2015 to 2021
La Flèche Wallonne Femmes is organised by the Amaury Sport Organisation, which also produces the Tour de France, Tour de France Femmes
Paris-Roubaix and many other major professional cycling races
Prior to her provisional retirement, Anna van der Breggen dominated the race

In 2023, Demi Vollering made history when she not only claimed her first La Flèche Wallonne Femmes title
but captured the Ardennes Classics triple crown after winning Amstel Gold Race Ladies and Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes
The Dutch rider made her winning move early on the Mur de Huy to take the victory ahead of Liane Lippert (Movistar Team)
Gaia Realini (Trek-Segafredo) rounded out the podium.
Last year, Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) held off Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) and Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) after a late attack on Mur de Huy to take the win

Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM-Zondacrypto)
Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) as well as the likes of former winner Marta Cavalli (Picnic-PostNL) among others.

The riders are due to start the neutralised zone at 14:00 local time
It is a rather damp start for the riders as they complete sign on and their media duties before the action gets underway.
Another DNS is Neve Bradbury of Canyon-SRAM-Zondacrypto due to illness
A big blow to defending champion Kasia Niewiadoma as she loses a very strong teammate.
Disappointing update: Neve Bradbury won’t be starting due to illness. Rest up, Neve – you'll be missed out there!#FlecheWallonneFemmes #FlecheWallonne 📸 @ThomasMaheux pic.twitter.com/v9RyCz5aCMApril 23, 2025

The official start is given at kilometre zero and the riders are racing La Fleche Wallone Feminine 2025
The first of the eight climbs today comes very early in the day after just 10.5km
which is 2.2km long and has an average of 5.5%
No early moves by the riders as they make it to the base of the Côte de Bohissau.
The bunch is still all together as the rain continues to pour on the riders as they climb the Côte de Bohissau.
There is quite an amazing age gap between the youngest rider at the race
Viktória Chladoňová (Visma-Lease a Bike) and the oldest Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (AG Insurance-Soudal) with 21 years between the two
Chladoňová is 18 with Moolman-Pasio at 39.
Nikola Noskova (Cofidis) and one other rider try a move.
But it is the first real proper move at forming a break.
The weather seems to be dampening the rider's will to go on the attack as well as dampening them literally as the rain continues to fall.
The riders are all together after over half an hour of racing.
The peloton is strung right out with a brief split quickly being stitched back together
the racing really does now seem to be on.
They are also swiftly brought back by the peloton.
The temperature has dropped to 9 °C as the wind and rain tighten its grip on the race.
They have a 25" advantage on the peloton.
The Belgian rider is just 15" off the back of the two leaders.
Van de Velde joins Le Mouel and Meert at the front of the race with 20" on the chasing pack.
The former winner of the British National Series has sprung across the gap and has joined Meert
Van de Velde and Le Mouel with 25" over the bunch.
The leading quad of riders now have a large group of eight riders trying to join them as the race is really breaking up.
That group of eight riders have been caught but the time gap to the four leaders has dropped significantly because of it as they now hold just 15" over the peloton.
The gap continues to be tight between the four leaders and the chasing pack.
they actually bridged to the leading group of four riders.
The peloton is splitting into bits as the gap drops to 10".
One of the riders out of the back of the main peloton is former winner Marta Cavalli (Picnic-PostNL)
She has missed a split in the bunch and now has some catching up to do.
The riders at the front of the race have been dragged back by the peloton.
About 8km away from the second climb of the day
the 1.2km Côte de Petite Somme which has an average gradient of 8%.
The men's race are into the final lap and it is setting up to be a battle royale on the Mur de Huy
Follow it with our other live report with the link below..
>>> La Flèche Wallonne Live – Pogačar and Evenepoel to clash again on iconic Mur de Huy finish
They are more than three minutes down on the bunch.
The riders start the Côte de Petite Somme.
FDJ-Suez and EF Education-Oatly lead the peloton.
Multiple riders being dropped as Eneritz Vadillo (Laboral Kutxa-Fundación Euskadi) and India Grangier (Coop-Repsol) are the latest to go backwards.
This is becoming a race of attrition now as riders continue to lose contact with the bunch with no-one going off the front.
it is Cedrine Kerbaol doing the majority of the work in the peloton for EF Education-Oatly
The riders are about to head onto the circuit
The men are also still racing on the circuit but are on the last lap
Some riders will likely be stopped in the men's race so that there isn't any trouble for the women's race.
Just around 10" between the two bunches but the pace is clearly high and the weather is playing a key role.
The pace is high and the race is really strung out as the weather continues to be abysmal.
Marta Cavalli (Picnic-PostNL) has been dropped from the peloton yet again
She is really struggling in the wet cold weather.
The average speed is at 34.4kph with the bunch splitting yet again.
The Dutch rider gets a gap of 25" as Kerbaol continues to lead the peloton for EF Education-Oatly.
The gap is extending for Anne Knijnenburg as she now has a 40" lead.
Onto the Côte d'Ereffe for the first of two ascents as the riders go onto the circuit
This climb is 2.1km long with an average gradient of 5%.
Knijnenburg now has 50" on the peloton.
After spending a lot of time working on the front the French rider has now sprung out of the peloton and is chasing down Knijnenburg up front.
Kerbaol joins Knijnenburg with a 30" lead over the peloton.
The riders are now descending the Côte d'Ereffe and heading to the Côte de Cherave for the first time
The 1.3km long climb has an average gradient of 8.1%
the superb descender that is Kerbaol has distanced Knijnenburg on the descent and now has a gap of around 5" on the Dutch rider
Knijnenburg makes it back to Kerbaol and the advantage stretches to 40" again.
Knijnenburg dropped as Kerbaol and her head onto the Cherave for the first time.
The peloton is closing rapidly as Knijnenburg is caught by the bunch who are now just 20" behind Kerbaol.
Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) and Lizzie Deignan (Lidl-Trek) are amongst the latest riders to lose contact.
Kerbaol is holding onto her 20" gap as she heads to the first ascent of the Mur de Huy
Onto the Mur de Huy for the first time and Kerbaol now has 40" gap.
Not ideal for those two riders just before the Mur de Huy.
is leading the peloton for Demi Vollering.
Katrine Aalerud (Uno-X Mobility) attacked just before the Mur de Huy but has now been caught.
Kerbaol goes over the top of the climb and crosses the finish line for the first time with one lap to go.

Two riders that were expected to be right at the front today as Visma-Lease a Bike take over the pacing in the peloton along with Fenix-Deceuninck and Canyon-SRAM-Zondacrypto
Kerbaol has 30" on the peloton with 35km to go.
Kopecky rejoins the peloton alongside Kim Le Court (AG Insurance-Soudal).
She isn't given an inch but something needs doing as Kerbaol's gap had gone out to 50".
has tried multiple attacks but hasn't been allowed a gap.
She is riding La Fleche Wallonne for the second time in her career.
The sunshine has come out for the first time today and the roads are beginning to dry out after a horrible day in the rain.
Kerbaol has a gap of 52" but she did just have a minute
FDJ-Suez using one of the few sections of strong crosswind
This caused splits in the men's race and now FDj-Suez are the team doing the damage alongside Fenix-Deceuninck but it doesn't seem strong enough just yet.
Multiple teams are now in colour order on the front of the peloton but the gap to Kerbaol is staying around 50".
Onto the Côte d'Ereffe for the final time
On the Côte d'Ereffe the gap to Kerbaol has melted away and now sits at just 6".
FDJ-Suez now with multiple riders on the front stretching the peloton out.
She goes out of the back with a rear puncture.
Inside 15km to go and Kerbaol has stretched her advantage back out to 17" again.
UAE Team ADQ now comes to the front to work for Elisa Longo-Borghini.
Just 5km to the base of the penultimate climb of the day
Lidl-Trek are the next team to move up alongside UAE Team ADQ
Fenix-Deceuninck and Canyon-SRAM-Zondacrypto
Alice Towers (Canyon-SRAM-Zondacrypto) and Brodie Chapman (UAE Team ADQ) lead the peloton with 7km to go
Kerbaol now only has a handful of seconds.
Onto the 1.3km long Côte de Cherave with an average gradient of 8.1% and Fenix-Deceuninck are on the front of the bunch.
Cecile Uttrup Ludwig (Canyona-SRAM-Zondacrypto) on the front as Kerbaol is finally caught inside 7km to go
Several riders losing touch at the back of the peloton including the likes of Amanda Spratt (Lidl-Trek) and Maeva Squiban (UAE Team ADQ)
Kopecky right at the back of the peloton.
Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon-SRAM-Zondacrypto) leading the bunch for Kasia Niewiadoma.
Over the top of the climb they go and Niedermaier now leads this heavily reduced peloton onto the descent back towards the Mur de Huy for the final time.
Onto the flat and Antonia Niedermaier leads still with 3km to go
SD Worx-Protime and Lidl-Trek now take up the pacing with 2km to go.
Onto the Mur de Huy goes the riders for the final time
They are led onto the climb by Juliette Labous followed by her teammate
Demi Vollering with all the big favoruited battling for her wheel.
Labous really stringing things out for Vollering but Niewiadoma
Longo-Borghini and Pieterse are still with them with 500 metres to go.
Vollering now takes up the pacing as Niewiadoma is starting to slip with Liane Lippert (Movistar) moving up alongside Pieterse.
Vollering ups the tempo but Pieterse launches past her!
Puck Pieterse of Fenix-Deceuninck wins La Fleche Wallonne Feminine 2025
She out sprinted Demi Vollering in the last 100 metres
Very tight for third place between Kasia Niewiadoma and Elisa Longo-Borghini.

Elisa Longo Borghini takes third ahead of Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney
Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Deceuninck) won the Flèche Wallonne Femmes
waiting until 150 metres from the finish atop the Mur de Huy to launch her attack and go past Demi Vollering (FDJ-Suez).
but Pieterse opened a gap and could raise her arms on the finish line
Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE Team ADQ) held off a surging Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney (Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto) to take third place
Cédrine Kerbaol (EF Education-Oatly) had jumped across to escapee Anne Knijnenburg (VolkerWessels) on the Côte d'Ereffe before dropping Knijnenburg on the Côte de Cherave to go solo
Kerbaol was almost a minute ahead of the peloton until FDJ-Suez took up the chase
and Kerbaol was caught on the Côte de Cherave with just under 7km to go
Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto kept the pace high to discourage attacks
and a peloton of about 25 riders entered the Mur de Huy together
Juliette Labous (FDJ-Suez) set the pace for Vollering for much of the climb before swinging off 350 metres from the top.
Vollering kept pushing with Pieterse and Longo Borghini on her wheel
and Pieterse launched her race-winning attack on the last 150 metres
but I’m really happy to get a victory here,” said Pieterse after the race
but we were always in control with the team
I was always in second position or something because they just gave everything
I saw how hard they worked today and thought ‘now I really have to finish it off to give them something back’
and I’m just super happy to get it.
I attacked where everybody says you have to attack
so I listened to my sports directors for a change,” the winner continued
After several other attempts had been brought back
and Monica Greenwood (Coop-Repsol) formed the early breakaway
but they were reeled in again 50km into the race
the peloton became smaller and smaller until Knijnenburg made her move with 70km to go
who had already done a lot of work at the front of the peloton
jumped across to the Dutchwoman on the Côte d’Ereffe and left Knijnenburg behind on the descent
the Côte de Cherave was too much for her
and Kerbaol managed to keep a steady gap up the Mur de Huy
passing the finish line with 37.2km to go 18 seconds ahead of the pack
increasing her advantage to 57 seconds 32km from the finish
FDJ-Suez in particular started to chase hard and used the Côte d’Ereffe to make up time: Kerbaol crested the climb only 13 seconds ahead
pulling out a 25-second gap again before the lead-outs into the Côte de Cherave saw her advantage melt away
and Kerbaol was caught early on the penultimate climb
Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto) set a hard pace to discourage attacks until her teammate Antonia Niedermaier took over on the last metres of the climb
Labous led the group under the flamme rouge with Vollering on her wheel
The French champion dropped off Vollering with 350 metres to go
but Vollering couldn’t respond to Pieterse’s attack and had to contend with second place while Pieterse celebrated the biggest road victory of her career so far

La Flèche Wallonne 2025 – Route
La Flèche Wallonne 2025 – Everything you need to know
Hello and welcome to Cyclingnews' live coverage of the 2025 La Flèche Wallonne
which hosts La Flèche Wallonne for the first time in the race’s history
ahead of a 200km trek through the hills of the Ardennes
culminating in the famous finish on the Mur de Huy
The stage is set for a gripping encounter. Before Sunday’s Amstel Gold
it felt like Tadej Pogačar was untouchable on a finish like this
having been neutralised by Remco Evenepoel
Five riders have attacked and are building a gap - Artem Shmidt (Ineos)
Simon Guglielmi (Arkéa - B&B Hotels)
Ceriel Desal (Wagner Bazin WB) and Siebe Deweirdt (Flanders - Baloise)
Their lead is up to over a minute - this might be our break of the day already.
where a Pogačar v Evenepoel duel was being anticipated
The riders are on the first climb of the day
as it’s the only one of the day’s eleven official climbs tackled inside the first 85km
The peloton make their way over the summit
That’s it for any official climbs for a while
though the terrain will continue to undulate
the break's lead has stabilised at just over two minutes
Here's a first look at the five riders in the break
UAE Team Emirates-XRG have been one of the teams committing to putting men at the front of the peloton
underlining their status as race favourites with their leader Tadej Pogačar
But they’ve also been joined by Lidl-Trek and Q36.5
who are showing a great deal of faith in their respective leaders Mattias Skjelmose and Tom Pidcock
while also saying their’s could be a two-pronged approach rather than backing a single leader
Bahrain-Victorious are also contributing to the chase
Their young leader Lenny Martinez has been in fine form in the early part of the season
and should be well-suited to the Mur de Huy finish
As you can see from the kit being worn by the riders in the peloton
The gap has come back down to under two minutes
The peloton aren't letting this one out of sight
The pace has increased significantly in recent kilometres
Soudal-QuickStep is the team who’ve upped the pace at the front of the peloton
They appear to want to make this a hard race for their man
we don’t usually see him win in uphill sprints like Mur de Huy
Having lost out to Skjelmose and Pogačar on Sunday in a three-up sprint
is he using his team as part of a plan to set him up for an attack before the Mur today
adding to the race’s complications during a phase of this race which is usually so calm and settled.
Soudal’s work is obliterating the break’s lead
There have been some attacks out of the peloton
Foss made similar moves to this earlier this season at Paris-Nice
It’s an approach indicative to the new
more adventurous approach to racing Ineos have adopted this season
all strung out bu Soudal-QuickStep’s pace
with UAE Team Emirates-XRG taking control again.
The decrease in pace has allowed the break’s lead to grow back up to one minute
while Foss and Stannard are halfway in between
Foss and Stannard are getting close to the leaders now
That was a smart move - they made it at a time when the peloton had brought the break to within catchable distance
but also when the pace had slowed enough to allow them to go clear
Here's Foss soon after making his move out of the peloton
The gap between the leaders and the peloton has remained steady since Foss and Stannard
That might change as we're about to start the second climb of the day
A couple of Uno-X riders have used the climb as a springboard to attack out of the peloton
Andreas Leknessund and Fredrik Dversnes are the two Uno-X riders
Leknessund in particular is a very good climber
but it's a big ask for them to close 50 seconds on the leaders
Leknessund and Dversnes have joined Deweirdt
Deweirdt has been dropped by the Uno-X riders
Leknessund and Dversnes are making progress
and are only 35 seconds behind the leaders.
as their deficit to the leaders grows to nearly two minutes
You expect Soudal-QuickStep will pick it up again at some point
given their statement of intent from earlier
Leknessund and Dversnes have joined the leaders
We’re entering a new phase of the race now
as the riders start the Côte d'Ereffe
This is one of the three climbs that will be taken on three times in the finishing circuit
the Mur de Huy The racing’s about to intensify
Jonas Koch crashed rounding a corner approaching the climb
Soudal-QuickStep had initially led the peloton on the climb but now UAE have taken over
the gap to the peloton has decreased to 1-20
The riders are descending to the foot of Côte de Cherave
the second of the three climbs of the finishing circuit
led by Shmidt with his Ineos teammates Foss on his wheel.
Defending champion Stevie Williams appears to be on a bad day
He's being dropped out of the peloton on the climb
The gap between the leaders and the peloton is 1-10 as they near the top of the climb
No sign of the race breaking up yet.
the riders are about to start the famous steep slopes of the Mur de Huy for the first time
This is one of the best sights of every season
UAE Team Emirates-XRG lead the peloton onto the climb
now less than a minute behind the leaders.
They did not use this first ascent of the climb to lay the hammer down
Dylan Teuns is another former winner struggling
The 2022 winner is hanging on at the back of the peloton
The gap remains stable in the aftermath of the Mur
We’re still waiting rothe racing to really get going in the peloton
That might be about to change as we approach the next climb
Once more it's UAE who lead the peloton onto it
Guglielmi is dropped from the break on the climb
The climb prove to be difficult for the break
who’s lead has come down to 50 seconds
as they descend to the foot of the Côte de Cherave
Still it’s UAE Team Emirates-XRG who lead the peloton
The big question for them and their leader Pogačar is whether or not to wait until the Mur de Huy
usually the Slovanain loves a long-range attack
but this is a race where the received logic is to wait until the Mur de Huy rather than burn your matches too early
and it was in waiting for the final sprint that he won here in 2023
Stannard is the latest rider to drop out of the break
and are sure to shape how the race unfolds
Lenny Martinez is one rider who might be struggling in the conditions -- he’s struggling at the back of the peloton
despite being one of the pre-race contenders
Shmidt has also been dropped from the break
Ceriel Desal has just crashed going around the corner
and is surrounded by Lidl teammates who waited for him
but looks unlikely to return to the peloton
Meanwhile the peloton are now just 20 or so seconds behind the leaders.
have started the Mur de Huy once more.
Will there be a move this time up the Mur in the peloton
Foss is going clear from the other two on the climb
Or so it seemed - they hung on and the three riders summit the climb together
There was no individual attack in the peloton
but Visma-Lease a Bike have taken to the front for the first time and upped the pace
Here's a sense of hos grim the weather is this afternoon
Soudal-QuickStep have now taken to the front again with Mauri Vansevenant
They’ve chosen not to make the race hard on the climbs
but seem to be executing a plan now we entered the final lap
There's a small split in the peloton on an exposed stretch of road
It's been closed and the peloton is back together
You can see his hand shiver as he takes something from it
who’s now his team’s clear leader since Skjelmose’s crash
The three leaders as they creste the Mur de Huy
having grown their lead back up to 25 seconds.
although they’re down a man for now as Junior Lecerf drops back with a mechanical
The gap's already coming down on this climb
Tadej Pogačar looks like he means business - he's taken off his rain jacket
Leknessund and Dversnes have made it to the top of the climb still in the lead
especially remembering how they each had to bridge up to the day's break from the peloton
There’s only one more climb to do now before the Mur de Huy
so it’s looking likely we’ll get the usual sprint up the Mur de Huy after all
Pogačar and Evenepoel are of course the headline names
but there are plenty of other to look out for - the much-hyped Thibau Nys; familiar Ardennes stars Tom Pidcock
Ben Healy; podium finishers from last year’s race
Kévin Vauquelin; and strong performers from Amstel Gold like Michael Matthews
They still have to catch the breakaway to ensure this is a sprint
The leaders still maintain a gap of about 13 seconds
There is also time for a pre-Mur attack on the penultimate climb
just as they start the Côte de Cherave
UAE have seriously upped the pace on the climb
and riders are straining not to let gaps open up
Only about 20 riders are left in the front group
Pogačar moves to the front for the descent
Christen and McNulty have got a small gap on the descent
A group of about 25 riders being led by Groupama-FDJ have caught those five leaders
Less than a kilometre now until the start of the Mur
Healy and Mauro Schmid are both near the front too
He's made his move...and disappeared into the distance already
Rarely has an attack up Mur de Huy left the opposition for dust quite like that from Pogačar
Both Healy and Evenepoel faded towards the top
Lenny Martínez and Santiago Buitrago came through to finish 4th and 6th respectively
That brings to an end Pogačar’s ‘drought’ at going two races without a win
while extending his run of consecutive podium finishes in the classics to six
the first of the humans to make it to the top of the Mur
That’s the second year in a row he’s finished runner-up at La Flèche Wallonne - the Frenchman clearly loves this climb
Tom Pidcock and Ben Healy can both also be pleased with their rides
Third and fifth are career high finishes for both at this race
fourth-place today for Lenny Martinez proves him to be a specialist for steep uphill finishes
Remco Evenepoel will be less happy with his 9th place finish
His Soudal-QuickStep team did much of the work at the front of the peloton clearly expecting a good result
and the lack of an attack from the Belgian suggests he did fancy himself in a sprint up the Mur
Given his scintillating form since returning from injury
Thibau Nys didn’t quite live up to the hype
It remains to be seen how badly the wet and cold affected his performance
His winning margin of ten seconds is the biggest at La Flèche Wallonne since Igor Astarloa in 2003
Thanks for joining us today, for another stunning display by the one and only Tadej Pogačar. The racing’s not done yet, with the La Flèche Wallonne Femmes taking place - be sure to follow all the action with us.
And be sure also to return Sunday for the last of the Ardennes Classics
Liège–Bastogne–Liège
Pogačar might have reiterated his status as favourite with today’s win
but Liège is a race Remco Evenepoel excels at
having never been beaten in his two appearances to date
Even Tadej Pogačar was tired after a rain soaked La Flèche Wallonne
The riders suffered in the rain at La Flèche Wallonne
Kévin Vauquelin (Arkea-B&B Hotels) went deep to finish second at La Flèche Wallonne
World Champion distances Kévin Vauquelin and Tom Pidcock on Mur de Huy finish
violently exploding away from the opposition around the steepest corner of the Mur de Huy
Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) had looked set to launch a long-range attack early on the climb
as Pogačar's lead-out from Jan Christen was coming to an end
the rainbow jersey then took one look back
and attacked away with extreme power to leave everyone behind
The remainder of the group of favourites were left to battle out the podium spots
with Kévin Vauquelin (Arkea-B&B Hotels) the best of the rest in second and Tom Pidcock (Q36.5) netting third
Such was the pace that Pogačar took off with
Vauquelin was left shaking his head as he congratulated the world champion at the finish
with no one finishing within 10 seconds of him
even after celebrating well before the line
Despite La Flèche Wallonne being billed as a second round of the showdown between Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) and Pogačar
even the Olympic champion was no match for the violent acceleration from the Slovenian
"It's a really great feeling to win again here
you don't like it so much," said Pogačar
who was visibly feeling the effects of a cold
Pogačar celebrated with his UAE Team Emirates-XRG teammates after they protected him and set him up for victory.
"We raced really well together as a team and we stuck to the plan
and I think we can do a great race again and try to win there as well."
Action kicked off at the 89th edition of the men's La Flèche Wallonne from Ciney
with a different 205.1km route from last year awaiting the 175-rider peloton
The Côte de Cherave returned to all three laps around Huy
again serving as the perfect warm-up for the iconic Mur de Huy finish
grey skies in Wallonia meant for some wet déjà vu
with full rain gear common among most of the riders
It was going to be another brutal day out on the 40th anniversary of the Mur de Huy being used as the finishing point
A five-man breakaway quickly formed in the first few kilometres after the flag dropping
Simon Guglielmi (Arkéa-B&B Hotels)
Tom Paquot (Intermarché-Wanty) and Siebe Deweirdt (Flanders-Baloise) getting away and pulling out a two-minute lead
With Soudal-QuickStep controlling things on the front of the peloton
the gap to the break was only 45 seconds with 150km to go
This allowed some opportunistic attackers to bridge across
with Rob Stannard (Bahrain Victorious) following him.
The now seven-man move momentarily became six as Dewrient dropped
before the Uno-X Mobility duo Fredrik Dversnes and Andreas Leknessund jumped across on the Côte de Petit Sommes to make it eight in front
The break got up the Mur de Huy for the first time with a 1:08 gap but riders continued to drop back on a tough day in the saddle
defending champion Stevie Williams (Israel-Premier Tech) confirmed that he was not feeling his best
He struggled and was distanced from the peloton
The break was left with three in front of the charging peloton as racing entered its final 41km
issuing an ominous warning for what was to come
five riders crashed after slipping on the same corner in Huy
with Amstel Gold Race winner Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) the most notable to hit the raised central kerb
Skjelmose was left writing in pain with a visible cut to his knee
meaning there would be no repeat of his heroics from last Sunday's Amstel Gold Race
as Ilan Van Wilder went down in the same crash
though his team continued to set the aggressive tempo as they had done for much of the race
The second lap of the Mur de Huy didn't bring much change
Dversnes and Leknessund staying in the lead
but with a heavily reduced lead of 13 seconds
They held this advantage all the way until the final seven kilometres
when they were finally caught and passed on the Côte de Cherave
With what remained of the peloton fought for position into the final two climbs
with the speed raised by Pogačar's UAE team
who placed the world champion perfectly coming into the finale with Evenepoel on his wheel
Some splits formed on the climb and the descent as Pogačar and Evenepoel surged and those behind were forced to close things down before the final kilometres to the foot of the Mur de Huy
Brandon McNulty and Jan Christen rode superbly for Pogačar
the American setting a high space to the climb and then the young Swiss rider strong on the climb
Pidcock and Evenepoel sat nicely positioned just behind the world champion as they entered the steep slopes of the Mur de Huy
with Christen doing the final lead-out before Pogačar opened things up
The tension had built nicely for the iconic wall finish
with Pogačar Evenepoel and everyone else waiting for the final attack
It was actually Healy who took over briefly on the front
with Pogačar matching his move in the saddle before launching his final move and removing all of the tension in a flash
No one was able to respond to his power surge
and he rode into the distance as everyone else fought the pain and the gravity
Pogačar suffered to stay clear but was able to celebrate with a 10-second margin at the line
It was another dominant win for the world champion
Vauquelin again showed his strength at this very race
claiming his second runner-up finish in as many years behind Pogačar
battled on the wet slopes to take a solid third place
during which time he also wrote for Eurosport
Prior to joining the team he reported on races such as Paris-Roubaix and the Giro d’Italia Donne for Eurosport and has interviewed some of the sport’s top riders in Chloé Dygert
he spends the majority of his time watching other sports – rugby
Evenepoel and Skjelmose all set to tackle the second Ardennes Classic
which is one of the hardest final kilometres on the WorldTour calendar
is an act of natural selection; only the strongest — or most suited — riders have claimed victory atop the summit
The latter has the record for the most wins
This year after a thrilling edition of Amstel on Sunday
where the favourite Tadej Pogačar was caught with 8km to go after an hour-long chase by Remco Evenepoel and the eventual surprise winner Mattias Skjelmose
Flèche appears to be a more open affair than many would have predicted a week ago
All three of podium finishers at Amstel are scheduled to start on Wednesday with all three having a point to prove: Pogačar that his Amstel result was just a blip
Evenepoel that he is continuing to improve after injury and Skjelmose that Sunday was not a one-off
La Flèche Wallonne is set to unfold over a 205km course featuring 11 sharp
the most prominent being the final climb up the Mur de Huy
The climbing action gets underway with the Côte de Vers after 17km although this is not particularly challenging
but after 83km the Côte de Petite Somme is harder at 1.2km at 8.8%
the peloton will enjoy a short breather before hitting the main circuit at Modave with 100km to go
includes a trio of decisive climbs: Côte d’Ereffe
The Côte d’Ereffe stretches for 2.1 km at an average gradient of 5%
softening the legs before a descent into the Hoyoux river valley
A brief flat section of just over 10km gives way to the Côte de Cherave
which opens with a punchy 8.5% gradient for the first kilometre before easing into a gentler incline up to the crest
La Flèche Wallonne 2025 route (Image: ASO)
A quick five-kilometre drop toward the Meuse leads the riders into Huy
rises for 1.3 kilometres at an unforgiving average of 9.7%
After a steep ramp in the opening 400 metres
the gradient rarely dips below 10% for the next 800 metres
only slightly relaxing to 6% near the finish
the final ascent of the Mur is where the race will be decided
with the leading contenders battling it out in a nail-biting finale that has become a hallmark of La Flèche Wallonne

it appeared that he was completely blown and could slip from the GC podium but a couple of days later he claimed victory on stage 20
Sunday’s loss wasn’t anywhere near the same magnitude of that crack in the Alps but Pogačar’s bounce back could be just as strong
He is one of the best cyclists of all time for a reason — winning is habitual for him
and although he has two second places in his last two races

he has proved his finishing kick is better than ever
Wednesday’s Mur de Huy represents a different sort of effort and so far in his career he has not been able to beat Pogačar in a pure watts-per-kilo climbing test
Remco Evenepoel at the Amstel Gold Race 2025 (Image: Zac Williams / SWpix.com)
Unsurprisingly the three best riders at Amstel will line up as favourites for Flèche and Lidl-Trek’s Mattias Skjelmose will be brimming with confidence after the biggest win of his career on Sunday
His shock win came as a result of impressive climbing
race savvy and a world-class finishing punch — all three ingredients are prerequisites to compete at Flèche
He could benefit from Pogačar and Evenepoel looking at each other on the Mur de Huy although that said
he will never be able to hide his sprinting ability again as every rider in the peloton will know that he was the man who kicked past the world and Olympic champions to win a major Classic
He came second to Pogačar at Flèche in 2023
can he go one better and beat the world champion for second time in the space of four days

Tom Pidcock (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) will have been disappointed to miss out and be stuck in an uncooperative chasing group at Amstel
Despite Flèche being the Ardennes Classic which suits the Brit the least (he has won Amstel and finished second at Liège)
the contenders will be watching him closely
Pidcock is well suited to the steep slopes of the Mur de Huy
So far this year he has struggled to be in the right position at key points in the races
but if his Q36.5 team can deliver him to the bottom of the final climb with the likes of Pogačar
Tom Pidcock at the 2025 Amstel Gold Race (Image: Zac Williams / SWpix.com)
where it usually comes down to the 1km watts-per-kilo test up the Mur de Huy
there are only a handful of riders who have the specific attributes to challenge the key contenders
Strong puncheurs like Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ) and Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek) will be hoping to compete with the best climbers
This is what Dylan Teuns (Cofidis) did when he won the race in 2022
but the Belgian hasn’t been showing that kind of form so far this year
A number of teams start with multiple options
British duo from Israel-Premier Tech Joe Blackmore and last year’s winner Stevie Williams have a chance for high-place finishes
with the former in particular showing great shape this spring
Team Visma-Lease a Bike pair Tiesj Benoot and Ben Tulett will likely adopt dual leadership as the squad look to secure their first Classic of the year
Tudor Pro Cycling Team start the race with two former winners in Marc Hirschi (2020) and Julian Alaphilippe (2018

For the other strong Ardennes men like Ben Healy
Neilson Powless (both EF Education-EasyPost)
Louis Barré (Intermarché-Wanty) and Mauro Schmid (both Team Jayco Alula)
they will likely to have to get away earlier as they won’t be able to match the punch of the top contenders on the final ramp up Mur de Huy
we think Pogačar’s uphill kick to the line will be hard to beat
although it will be a close affair with Evenepoel and Skjelmose in the form they are in

After suffering a surprise defeat in Sunday’s Amstel Gold Race
Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates–XRG) got some of his mojo back by winning Wednesday’s La Flèche Wallonne with a dominant solo ride on the daunting climb to the finish line on the Mur de Huy (1.3 km @ 9.6%
In a way, this race was tailor-made for the world champion because no one in the world could have followed him when he made his move with about 400 metres left to climb – and no one did. The only rider thought capable of staying on his wheel on the last of three climbs of the Mur was Remco Evenepoel. But
though his Soudal Quick-Step team worked hard to soften the legs of his rivals through much of the 205.1 km race from Ciney to Huy
the Belgian double Olympic champion faltered on the climb
The impressive 23-year-old French rider Kévin Vauquelin (Arkéa–B&B Hotels) was the best of the rest
his second runner-up finish in a row in the race
That 10-second margin may not sound like much
but it was the biggest winning gap in the race since 2003
Q36.5’s Tom Pidcock made another impressive showing and came in third
who outsprinted both Pogačar and Evenepoel in the Amstel Gold Race
crashed on a curve on a road surface made slick by almost constant rain and abandoned
the rain stopped for the final 35 km of the race
It was Ben Healey (EF Education–EasyPost) who kicked off the decisive action by taking off from the lead group with about 500 metres left to ride
Pogačar rode with him for a while and then hit the pedals hard and was gone
with no one able to come within shouting distance
it was a tired-looking Pogačar who crossed the finish line without his usual triumphant smile
for that was his sixth Classics race since March 8 and his fourth in 17 days
A post shared by Flèche et LBL (@classiquesardennes)

saying: “We raced really well together as a team today
but everyone was strong out there.” And he said that he was looking forward to Sunday’s Liège-Bastogne-Liège
“We can do something great again on Sunday,” he said
“I suffered because of the cold,” Nys said
“I was struggling all day with my clothes and the rain
Evenepoel also talked to Het Laatste Nieuws after the race and indirectly also blamed the weather
“I took off my raincoat too early,” he said
I can only blame that on the cold because before that
he said he was feeling strong throughout the race
“The feeling was good and the team was good,” he said
“That is only motivating for Sunday.” That is the day of the Liège-Bastogne-Liège
So we can look forward to another exciting showdown between the two superstars and hope that the spring Classics season will go out with fireworks

Team manager Gianetti suggests Pogačar should avoid long-range attack before final Classic of the spring
However UAE team manager Mauro Gianetti has tried to tame his rider's midweek ambitions by saying Pogačar doesn't need to attack 50km from the finish or even win Flèche Wallonne
Pogačar will be accompanied at Liège by Felix Großschartner
"I've enjoyed this Classics campaign a lot so far
I came into this period with a lot of goals and ambitions and there are still two left
with the biggest of them next Sunday," Pogačar said
"The most suited race for me is probably Liège so I'm really looking forward to it in particular
Pogačar will be hoping to reclaim the Flèche Wallonne title he won in 2023
where he beat Amstel Gold Race winner Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) to the win atop the Mur de Huy
and Sivakov will also race Flèche along with Swiss talent Jan Christen
Speaking to the Belgian RTBF podcast 'On connaît nos classiques'
UAE team CEO Mauro Gianetti said that racing Flèche is necessary for Pogačar to be ready for Liège-Bastogne-Liège
The Swiss team manager is not worried about a build-up of fatigue ahead of the weekend after Pogačar's intense spring Classics campaign.
"But he doesn't have to make the race again from 50km from the finish or necessarily win
We also have other riders in the team who are suitable for a race like La Flèche Wallonne
because we knew that recovering from the fatigue after Paris-Roubaix would be the hardest part
But in the end we saw in Amstel Gold Race that his form was good."
Gianetti pointed out that the world champion will have completed just 13 days of racing heading into Liège
and Flèche – having come this month
Tadej will have had 13 days of racing under his belt since the start of the season
races that he always rides in his own way – with spectacle and dedication
But La Flèche Wallonne simply fits well into the programme."

Slovenian takes second win at Belgian classic ahead of Kévin Vauquelin and Tom Pidcock
The Slovenian followed a move by Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) before disappearing up the climb after attacking over the top of the Irishman
his face and rainbow jersey smeared with dirt and grime
crossed the line with his arms aloft to make a huge statement of intent ahead of Liège–Bastogne–Liège on Sunday
The reigning World Champion won by nine seconds ahead of Kévin Vauquelin (Arkéa–B&B Hotels) and Tom Pidcock (Q36.5) who took second and third respectively
It was the biggest winning margin in the men’s race since 2003
Pogačar said it was a relief to climb off the bike after much of the race played out in heavy rain
"It's a really great feeling to win again here on this tough final
and to pull it off with a win means a lot."
He added: "We raced really well as a team today
We have the same team more or less for Sunday
and I think we can do a great race again."
Pogačar has become known for his trademark long range attacks in a one day setting
his victory came after a move with just a few hundred metres to spare
But even that was impossible to follow after a gruelling day in Belgium
"Tadej went and I don't think anyone was anywhere close," explained Ben Healy afterwards
he actually left it pretty late for Tadej."
the rain fell for much of the day after the peloton left Ciney ahead of a 200 kilometre trek through the Ardennes hills in the south eastern corner of Belgium
a six man move soon established itself as the race got underway
Two riders from Ineos Grenadiers were present
along with Uno-X duo Andreas Leknessund and Fredrik Dversnes
Robert Stannard (Bahrain Victorious) and Ceriel Desal (Wagner Bazin WB) were also both in the breakaway
it was bad news for former champion Stevie Williams (Israel-Premier Tech) as he dropped out of the peloton on the Cote de Cherave
UAE Emirates and Soudal Quick-Step were both pacing hard at the front of the main field with the aim of reducing the gap to the leaders which stood at more than a minute
the race was back onto the slopes of the Cote de Cherave and it soon began to cause damage
Both Schmidt and Stannard were dropped by the leaders and quickly swallowed up by the peloton
The rain began to hammer down as the race finale drew closer
A big crash came out of nowhere in the peloton with Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) going down hard
The Danish rider appeared to be badly hurt
but he remounted his bike and was soon surrounded by teammates as they attempted to get him back into the race
began the penultimate ascent of the Mur de Huy with a gap of just 12 seconds over the main field
Foss and his two Uno-X breakaway compatriots were caught by the UAE Emirates-XRG led peloton with seven kilometres to go
Tadej Pogačar’s teammates all looked to ensure that he was well positioned ahead of the final ascent of the Mur de Huy
Several riders were able to pull off their wet weather gear as the rain finally subsided
Jan Christen led the UAE train up the Cote de Cherave for the final time and his efforts soon strung out the peloton
The group split as Christen crested the Cherave and pushed on towards the Mur de Huy
Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) tried to go from distance in order to prevent another Pogačar onslaught
The Slovenian simply rode over to Healy before putting in a powerful seated attack which took him past the Irishman and into the distance
Pogačar took the win by nine seconds ahead of Kévin Vauquelin (Arkéa–B&B Hotels) and Tom Pidcock (Q36.5)

He may have lacked the punch to follow Pogačar on Wednesday, but he felt on form throughout La Flèche Wallonne
He remains confident heading into Liège-Bastogne-Liège
but when Tadej went and the real explosiveness had to be used
I felt that my legs locked up," Evenepoel said.
Evenepoel's Soudal-QuickStep team did the lion's share of the work throughout the 205km race
trying to make it as difficult as possible before their leader had a chance in the final
This ultimately ended with defeat to Pogačar
but was nonetheless a positive sign for Sunday
La Doyenne is the Ardennes Classic which suits Evenepoel best, while the Mur de Huy finale of La Flèche Wallonne
does not particularly play into his strengths
He is a two-time winner at Liège-Bastogne-Liège from just two appearances in 2022 and 2023
and a more than solid team performance banked in the rain
Evenepoel will be eyeing up a similar performance to Amstel Gold Race last Sunday.
He was able to reel back in the world champion
who went solo 42km from the finish and believed that only an early crash prevented him from beating Pogačar and Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) in the three-up sprint
"It was a very difficult race [on Wednesday]
It was the first time I had to race in such rainy conditions," he said
That's why we rode at a steady pace with the team
Only the mistake and my last minute and a half of the race were difficult."
Evenepoel will start Sunday's Monument alongside Gil Gelders

The riders of Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women showcased their strength in La Flèche Wallonne
starting the Belgian classic with a young and talented lineup
made a strong impression in the final stages
Mijntje Geurts ultimately finished in tenth place
no dangerous breakaway managed to form under harsh conditions
shifting the focus early on to the demanding local circuits
The first selection occurred on the initial ascent of the Mur de Huy
where the riders from the black-and-yellow squad positioned themselves prominently at the front
including four riders from Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women
approached the final climb of the Mur de Huy
21-year-old Geurts managed to hang on for a long time but ultimately came up just short of a podium place
Pieterse claimed the victory; Geurts crossed the line in an impressive tenth
said sports director Jos van Emden afterwards
"I was actually quite positively surprised
but the way they raced today was truly impressive
The fact that Mijntje also finishes tenth is an outstanding achievement
both Marion Bunel and Maud Oudeman also secured spots in the top twenty – a strong result for the young squad
"It’s great to see how well the riders are developing
The progress our young talents are making is going well
and a race like today plays a big part in that
It’s wonderful to see them all step up and seize their opportunities”

Tiesj Benoot finished 12th in the Flèche Wallonne
The Belgian of Team Visma | Lease a Bike put in a strong effort on the Mur de Huy
In the 89th edition of the Walloon classic
the riders faced harsh conditions and very slippery roads
who finished in the top ten in the previous two editions
was involved in a crash and had to make a big effort to get back in the peloton
After the escapees were caught on the penultimate climb
Ben Tulett and Benoot held on and started the final climb of the Mur de Huy in a select group
Pogacar accelerated early on and reached the finish line solo
Benoot and Tulett finished 12th and 18th in the group behind
but also because of the rain and the cold," sports director Arthur van Dongen summed up the race
"The controlling teams rode a tight pace all day
which is why a lot of guys had to drop out early
It's a pity that Tiesj crashed and Ben got caught in the cold
That Tiesj still managed to join the front group
Van Dongen also praised Nordhagen's performance
That he started the final climb of the Mur de Huy in a select group promises something for the future
but there are enough identifiable reasons why we failed to take a top-ten classification."
Since it was first added to the route in 1985 it's the famous climb of the 'Mur de Huy' that has decided winner of La Flèche Wallonne each year
After a tough day in the hills of the Ardenne and a total of four ascents of this dreaded ascent it takes a mix of brute force and perfect timing to land the killer blow to defeat your rivals
This midweek Belgian classic is all about the final ascent up the brutal 26% slopes of the legendary Mur de Huy
No other race is so dominated by a single stretch of tarmac
and launching your attack at just the right moment with legs of steel
Returning for more in 2025 is 2023 champion Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates – XRG)
But even the greats can get it wrong on the Mur
Hoping to catch him off guard: Tom Pidcock (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team)
and last year’s winner Stephen Williams (Israel – Premier Tech)
It's a horrible wet day in Wallonia and all the favourites are still well wrapped up in their rain gear with two more ascents of the Mur de Huy remaining
The La Flèche Wallonne is streaming on lots of platforms around the world
but what if you're abroad and don't want to take out a new subscription just to watch the race
It's outstanding at unblocking streaming services
it's fast and it has top-level security features too
A subscription will set you back US$149.99 for the year or US$29.99 on a monthly basis
which will help you access your Flo subscription from anywhere
With Eurosport no longer available in the U.K. the only place to catch the cycling action is now on TNT Sports
though BT Broadband customers can get a discounted rate
You will also have access to the Premier League
Champions League and Europa League football plus rugby
A subscription will set you back CAN$150 for the year or CAN$29.99 on a monthly basis
As mentioned above, cycling fans in Australia can watch the 2025 La Flèche Wallonne on SBS for FREE
SD Worx-Protime say Dutch rider is 'not completely recovered' and hope she will be fit for Liège-Bastogne-Liège on Sunday
after the former Ardennes master was forced to pull out on the morning of the race due to illness
Returning to the women's peloton from three years of retirement meant that Van der Breggen would get the chance to again take on the iconic Mur de Huy finish at La Flèche Wallonne
which she conquered seven times in a row between 2015 and 2021
However, since struggling with illness and fitness since Brabantse Pijl
and being forced to abandon Amstel Gold Race on Sunday
Van der Breggen has not recovered enough to take a 12th start at the hilly Classic in Wallonia
"Anna van der Breggen won't start in today’s Flèche Wallonne. She’s not completely recovered & therefore, as a precaution, won’t race today," read a statement from SD Worx-Protime on X.
"The hope is Anna will be fit again for Liège-Bastogne-Liège."
Van der Breggen looked set to be at her top shape in time for the Ardennes
They are races she dominated throughout her pre-retirement career
as the first woman to complete the famed triple at Amstel
with Vollering following suit six years later
However, after returning from a Sierra Nevada altitude camp and taking 11th at the Tour of Flanders, behind teammate Lotte Kopecky
illness seems to have dented her chances at her previous best races
"She didn't feel well on Friday in the Brabantse Pijl
and on Saturday she also complained of a headache and sore throat
She started anyway in the hope of getting through it
but that soon turned out to be vain hope."
If Van der Breggen can recover in time for Liège
she's likely to still play a support role for Kopecky
despite starting Flèche on Wednesday
You cannot ignore that Elisa Longo-Borghini and Demi Vollering are currently the best on this explosive finish," said DS Gian Paolo Mondini
"Lotte Kopecky's form is on an upward trend
But we should not put too much pressure on her
the Mur de Huy is a climb that on paper suits her less
A lot will depend on how that last kilometre is ridden.
"Lotte is mainly aiming for Liège-Bastogne-Liège
So we go into the race in a kind of relaxed way because the pressure is not on us
All the details of La Flèche Wallonne and La Flèche Wallonne Féminine
taking place on Wednesday April 23 in 2025
La Flèche Wallone 2025: Key detailsDate
Stephen Williams (GBr) Israel Premier Tech / Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Pol) Canyon SRAM
The second of three Ardennes Classics
La Flèche Wallonne and La Flèche Wallonne Féminine will take place on Wednesday April 23
While the Amstel Gold Race and Liège-Bastogne-Liège only added their women's editions of the races back in 2017
La Flèche Wallonne Féminine is coming for what will be its 28th edition this year
with the men's race running for its 89th year in 2025
Last year saw Stevie Williams (Israel-Premier Tech) become the first British rider to win the men's race when he outgunned the field to the top of the famous climb of the Mur de Huy
Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) became the third different winner in as many years following the seven year reign of then-retired Anna van der Breggen
Could she come back to win Flèche after an 11-year gap
Both races were characterised by brutal conditions
with rain and even snow decimating the fields and leading to streams of DNFs
La Flèche Wallonne is essentially won or lost on the short but brutal Mur de Huy (1.3km at 9.6 per cent), the steepest finishing climb in Classics cycling
which features three times along the 193.6km course
The route of Fléche Wallonne has changed little in modern times
and it is no surprise to see that continue into 2025
The one key difference in both men's and women's events is the reintroduction of the Côte de Cherave after a year out
measuring 1.3km long with a healthy average gradient of 7.7%
tackled twice in both events and culminating in the Mur de Huy
The Cherave comes just six kilometres from the end so has the potential to play a part in the final result
in reality everyone is saving themselves for the big push to the finish on the Huy
and in practice it's unlikely the Cherave will make a great deal of difference
this year's men's event is 6.5km longer than last year's
while the women's is 4.3km shorter at 140.7km
