Sweden's Peder Fredricson and the 10-year-old SV Vroom de La Pomme Z (Vigo D Arsouilles Stx x Untouchable 27) won Sunday's CSI4* 1.55m Sweden H&M Grand Prix in Stockholm
at the 2024-edition of Sweden International Horse Show.
Nine horse-and-rider combinations of the eighteen in the class managed to stay clear over the 13-fence track set by Peter Lundström to join the deciding jump-off
With five Swedish riders qualified for the jump-off the chances of a home win were pretty good
and a loud Stockholm-crowd cheered their heroes on as one after the other delivered.
The first clear in the jump-off came from Amanda Landeblad (SWE) and her consistent For Killy (Otangelo x For Pleasure), who stopped the clock at 43.07 seconds
While Landeblad put pressure on the rest with a risky inside turn to the fourth fence in the jump-off – an oxer – the time looked possible to improve
which soon would be proved by Peder Fredricson (SWE) who opted for the same turn to stop the clock on 42.36 aboard SV Vroom de La Pomme Z
Rolf-Göran Bengtsson (SWE) followed next but could not keep the same speed as Landeblad and Fredricson
crossing the finish line in 43.59 seconds with Zuccero HV (VDL Zirocco Blue x Caretino 2)
Malin Baryard-Johnsson (SWE) was next in the ring and last out of the five Swedes
but opted for a safe clear on Henessy (Hogwart x Piano II) to slot into fourth
Olivier Philippaerts (BEL) had the chance to snatch the win from the hosts but could not match the top three's pace aboard Precious Dwerse Hagen (Cornet Obolensky x Casall) and had to settle for fourth as the timers stopped on 44.98 seconds
with the Belgian rider pushing in between Fredricson in 1st
Bengtsson in 3rd and Baryard-Johnsson in 5th
This was Fredricson and SV Vroom de La Pomme Z's first international Grand Prix win
even though he has a lot of talent," Fredricson said of the gelding
that he has been riding since March 2023
in a press release from Sweden International Horse Show
"But now he’s starting to understand what to do
and it’s a great feeling when you reach that point."
“It has been a fantastic weekend and an amazing competition
The atmosphere with the audience was great," Fredricson said

Mill Spring, NC – July 13, 2024 – Capping off an evening of Saturday Night Lights festivities presented by Stuller Power Solutions and a thrilling display of show jumping with course design by Guilherme Jorge (BRA), Ashlee Bond (ISR) stepped to the top of the podium of the $65,000 Buckley Fence Grand Prix CSI 2*
paired with Aurora Farms’ Elka De La Pomme (Cartoon Z x Kannan)
dominated the ten-horse jump off with a final time of 36.09 seconds
to claim reserve honors in a time of 36.13 seconds
Doug Payne (USA) piloted Quintessence (Unknown x Unknown)
the 2011 Holsteiner gelding of Payne Equestrian
to mark 38.95 seconds on the clock for third.
Bond provided insight into Elka De La Pomme’s development over the team’s two year partnership
“She’s been a fighter since the day I got her – super careful
I just had to channel it in the right direction
because she always wanted to go so fast,” Bond said of the 2014 Hanoverian mare.
Bond expressed her delight for Elka De La Pomme’s performance under the Tryon Stadium lights
Bond noted that the mare is “just learning to put it all together
I felt like it just all came together at the right time.”
Despite the extremely small margin between Bond’s and Gamboa’s jump off times
the Israeli rider explained that she did not dwell for long on her competitors’ jump off rides
I just do what I feel my horse and I are ready for
it’s what I felt was right for us in that moment,” she detailed.
With the Saturday Night Grand Prix being Bond’s last class before departing to the Paris Olympics
she now has her sights set on her upcoming performance with Donatello 141
“Donnie will fly out with Brittini Raflowitz and Jessie Stanek
We’ll have nine days of just doing what we do and getting ready
It’s just another horse show – we’ve fortunately done an Olympics before
Bond has used her time at Tryon International to prepare for Paris
looking to repeat the same success she had in previous Olympic competition
This was the exact prep I did before the Tokyo Olympics,” she recapped
and then went [to Tokyo] and had a very good showing
Fans can look forward to seeing Bond back for the Tryon Fall Series
“I’ll be back for the Major League Show Jumping 5* in the fall,” Bond said
“I love it here – I think it’s great for young horses and older horses
You can go trail riding on the Cross-Country courses

The late Guy Lacelle was one of the world’s top ice climbers
with numerous groundbreaking first ascents and repeats in the Canadian Rockies
Lacelle was also a talented competition climber
having won the Ice Competition in Ouray in 2000 and 2001
as well as the Festiglace Competition in Quebec in 2004
His accomplishments earned him international recognition, including the Bill March Summit of Excellence Award in 1999. A frequent contributor to Gripped, Lacelle’s articles and reports embodied his passion for climbing. In 1997, he made history when he soloed the three WI6 ice routes on the Trophy Wall: Terminator, Replicant and Sea of Vapors – read about it here.
Born in Hawkesbury, Ontario, Lacelle started climbing while studying at the University of Ottawa in the 1970s. He later became a winter courses instructor for Outward Bound in Ontario and a guide for the Yamnuska Mountain School in Canmore. On Dec. 10, 2009, Lacelle died at the Bozeman Ice Fest in Montana. “A small pocket of snow pulled out and caught him. It hit him and took him off the cliff, down the ice,” said Doug Chabot, director of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center.
A few years before his death, Lacelle shared his top 135 ice climbs from around the world in a Gripped article. We’ve included that list below (which is in no particular order) for those looking to climb some of Lacelle’s favourite winter routes.

If you need a dessert for a school potluck or maybe a baby or bridal shower, Carrie Minns has the perfect recipe. The author of La Pomme de Portland stopped by to share her delicious recipe.
Sometimes when I’m trying to decide what to serve for dessert in late spring, I look to what is in season and here in Oregon, after a rainy winter, there’s not much. A few apples still holding on, some citrus coming up from California, and rhubarb. So, I decide to look for ingredients on the shelves of my pantry. The dried cherries and almonds I usually find there are perfect for this modest cake.
1 1/2 sticks of unsalted butter, melted and cooled
Preheat your oven to 350F. Toast your whole almonds on a cookie sheet for 8 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned and fragrant. Let cool completely. Lightly toast your sliced almonds for 4 minutes.
Butter and flour a 9-inch cake pan. Or if you’re like me and don’t own a cake pan, flour and butter a deep pie plate.
Put your whole almonds in a food processor and pulse the machine until the nuts are finely ground. Transfer the nuts to a medium bowl. Add your flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir to combine. Set aside.

“All the horses in the barn are a bit family horses
Mexico’s Ana Catalina “Catsy” Cruz set the course for a 57-horse field
From the 14 clear rounds over the speed track
McGuane put Linguini’s talent for speed across the ground to the test and stopped the clock at 65.67 seconds for the win
Molly Ashe Cawley (USA) took second in 66.81 seconds riding Berdien
Ireland captured first and third with Max Wachman rounding out the podium aboard Quintini for owner Coolmore Showjumping in 67.55 seconds
“She’s quick at whatever she does; these classes are definitely her specialty because she’s fast
quick at the jumps and has a big stride,” said McGuane
Every day is the same and she always tries her hardest
“It took a bit of jumping [to win today],” continued McGuane
“It was a careful enough track with a lot of right rollbacks
Both doubles needed the horses to be very honest
I got lucky today that she was great and jumping her best.”
McGuane is having a banner season in Wellington after winning the CSI3* Adequan® WEF Challenge Cup on the derby field during the sixth week of the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF)
in addition to taking the Lövsta Future Challenge 7-Year-Old Developing Jumper Series Final during WEF 10

Peder Fredricson concluded the competitions at Strawberry Arena with a victory in the Sweden H&M Grand Prix
riding the talented Sv Vroom de la Pomme Z
ahead of two national team colleagues.“He’s starting to feel really confident in the arena,” Peder said after the competition
It was a Swedish triple in the major showjumping class at Sweden International Horse Show in Strawberry Arena this weekend
Peder Fredricson claimed the top spot ahead of Amanda Landeblad and Rolf-Göran Bengtsson
All in all Peder Fredricson claimed four podium finishes in his five starts during the weekend
The atmosphere with the audience was great”
and Peder Fredricson has been riding him for two years
with placements in the World Cup and a win at the national Flyinge Grand Prix last weekend
But now he’s starting to understand what to do
and it’s a great feeling when you reach that point,” Peder Fredricson said
Runner-up Amanda Landeblad is known for being reliable and delivering clear rounds in Nations Cup events
fast jump-offs at the highest levels haven't been her speciality
Wanting to do better after finishing fourth in Friday's class
she took a bold approach and was the first to attempt a tight inside turn after the third jump-off fence
“It felt like I was riding incredibly fast
I haven’t really ridden against the clock at any levels with For Killy
they better watch out,” Amanda Landeblad said
and seemed quite satisfied with her second place after all
Veteran Rolf-Göran Bengtsson was less pleased
his best result before the final class was third place
He did his outmost to match his fellow competitors’ times
plain and simple,” Rolf-Göran Bengtsson said with a smile
The horses have jumped clear rounds the whole weekend
and I just need to do more jump-offs myself; I’m a bit rusty right now,” he admits

No Secret De La Pomme isn’t a stranger to big rings and bright lights
Having competed with his owner Beth Von Brecht in the amateur jumpers at venues like the Pennsylvania National Horse Show and Winter Equestrian Festival (Florida)
and in several grand prix classes with trainer Matt Cyphert
the gelding is used to the charged atmosphere of competitive show jumping
“Pom Pom” experienced a very different kind of competition: the $40,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby at the Tryon Riding & Hunt Club Charity 1 Horse Show
held at Tryon International Equestrian Center (North Carolina)
piloted Pom Pom around the Skip Bailey-designed course
earning the pair a combined score of 179 in the first round
Little more than a month after No Secret De La Pomme transitioned from the jumper ring to the hunter ring
Matt Cyphert piloted the gelding to a win in the $40,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby held June 10 at Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring
“The course was really nice to look at,” Cyphert said
noting it was mostly single fences with few related distances
“You got to pick a track and really show your horse off.”
Pom Pom returned for the handy and earned a score of 203—for a total score of 382—with a bold hand gallop to the final fence
“That’s something we’re used to doing the jumper ring
so [hand galloping] is right in his wheelhouse,” said Cyphert
“That’s one thing we didn’t have to teach him as a hunter.”
a 9-year-old Belgian Warmblood (RMF Cadeau De Muze—Geneve De Muze) came to Cyphert’s Woodhill Farm two and half years ago after he was imported by Donald Cheska
“We were the first people to look at Pom Pom when he came in,” Cyphert said
Von Brecht bought the gelding and began competing him in the low amateur jumpers across the East Coast and Texas
Cyphert and Von Brecht decided to transition Pom Pom to the hunter ring
They started showing him the high performance divisions
producing top results almost immediately at the Texas Shoot-Out
so we wanted to dabble in it a little bit.” Cyphert said after their June 10 win
He was fantastic: champion in the four-foot division and good in the derby
but with some tack changes and Pom Pom’s good brain
“The back-to-back trips in the high performance are a bit challenging,” Cyphert said
“He doesn’t quite understand why he’s not supposed to go faster the second time he goes in the ring
and I think everything came together Friday night.”
Cyphert plans to keep Pom Pom in the hunter ring for the remainder of the summer
They will go to shows at Lamplight Equestrian Center (Illinois) and Traverse City (Michigan) before hopefully heading to Lexington
for the Platinum Performance USHJA International Hunter Derby Championship
“Our definite goal is to do Derby Finals at the end of August,” Cyphert said
I think it’s a job he really wants to do and do well
and it’s just a matter of time before that becomes second nature.”

This month’s Breeder of the Month is Copgrove Hall Stud for the Dante winner Economics
A Yorkshire-bred winner of one of the county’s most prestigious races: there could be no more appropriate recipient of the TBA Breeder of the Month award for May than Copgrove Hall Stud
after Economics claimed Group 2 success in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes at York
Founded by one successful Yorkshire businessman in Vaguely Noble’s breeder Lionel Holliday in 1939
Copgrove Hall was brought back up from scratch by another
after he purchased the hall and 50 acres of land in 1969
at the Tattersalls December Sales for 4,000gns on the advice of his trainer Sam Hall
and the resulting foal immediately put Reed on the road to success
since he was the useful stayer and subsequent stallion Warpath
whose son Shotgun finished fourth in Shergar’s Derby
Copgrove Hall manager Brian O’Rourke rightly notes: “Guy Reed would have been so proud
Not only did he breed and race the female side of the family
the sire of Economics’ dam La Pomme D’Amour
was raised on the stud by the Wildensteins
such as the Nunthorpe with La Cucaracha and the Ebor with Dakota
but this would have been extra special to him.”
recorded her crowning glory in August 2013
by winning the Prix de Pomone for the second time
O’Rourke points out: “From her first six foals she had just one winner
She’d been mated largely with Northern Dancer horses
so we thought we’d send her to Night Of Thunder
and along came the colt who grew into Economics
We had to sell him as a foal to keep the business’s cash flow going
and he turned him over as a yearling for 160,000gns.”
Economics had not burst on the scene when La Pomme D’Amour’s next foal
and then a Nathaniel colt foal was sold last year for 19,000gns
She was rested last year but is safely in foal to Stradivarius
we’ll probably go back to a Dubawi next year,” O’Rourke reflects
La Pomme D’Amour’s mating with Stradivarius was perhaps no surprise
since O’Rourke spent from 2008 to 2017 as manager of the Gold Cup winner’s base
after 12 years in Kentucky and before his move to Copgrove Hall
which continues to operate in the ownership of the Guy Reed Trust
Reed had no children and everything to do with the stud has been put into the trust for 20 years
with his nephews Clive and John Reed taking nominal charge from their respective homes in Harrogate and Monte Carlo
The daily business side of the enterprise has been entrusted to O’Rourke
who explains: “I was brought on board to make the place commercial
and have some very good clients – Jim and Fitri Hay
With 99 per cent of Copgrove Hall’s business conducted among outside clients
the emphasis is hugely different from Reed’s heyday
when he had two dozen mares and a large string of horses split among four or five trainers
She won only a small race at Wolverhampton but has bred three winners
a very fast filly over five furlongs who was rated in the high-80s and has been retained for the stud

Edited press release from Longines Pfingst Turnier Wiesbaden
the Belgian anthem concluded the Longines Pfingst Turnier Wiesbaden in the Biebrich Palace Park
as Koen Vereecke (BEL) and Kasanova de La Pomme (Bamako de Muze x Malito de Reve) secured the victory with a flawless jump-off in 54.56 seconds in the CSI4* 1.60m Grand Prix of Landeshauptstadt Wiesbaden.
At the 86th edition of the event, the 54-year-old was the first Belgian to make it to a Grand Prix victory
“The victory today means a lot to me,” Vereecke explained. “I'm supposed to ride my first Nations Cup [of the season] in St
so Wiesbaden was intended as a preparation – it couldn't have gone better. I didn’t want to ride too fast
I just rode my way and knew that there were faster riders
but I wanted to ride without mistakes and have a good round.”
Anna Maria Kuhlmann (GER) and Pegasus Deau Re Mi (Deauville van T&L x Corofino) placed second with a time of 57.53 seconds in the jump-off
followed by Nicola Pohl (GER) and Catz de Sulpice (Tresor de Virton x Vesontio du Mesnil) who placed third with a faster time but with a fence down in 50.75.
I might be a little annoyed that I rode too fast,” 28-year-old Pohl commented. “I actually felt safe on this ground all weekend
That’s why I dared to ride really fast," she said about the conditions in the big grass ring after a week of challenging weather.
Yuri Mansur (BRA) and Vitiki (Valentino x For Expo) finished fourth with four faults in the jump-off and a time of 51.70
followed by Antonia Pettersson Häggström (SWE) and Zara de Laubry Z (Zandor x Chin Chin) in fifth in 57.97
Evergate Stables has acquired Linguini de La Pomme (Marius Claudius x Tinka's Boy) from Belgium's Wilm Vermeir
The 12-year-old mare is now seen with Egypt's Nayel Nassar
who made his international debut with her at Wellington International this week – placing 4th in the CSI5* Wellington Equestrian Realty 1.45m
Linguini de La Pomme stepped up to five-star level last year
winning three 1.45m classes during CHIO Aachen last summer
as well as taking victories in Mechelen and Valence
"I am very happy that it goes so well for them," Vermeir told World of Showjumping
"Linguini is a super horse and very simple
so for me there was no doubt that they would be a great match."
After several years at the highest level of the sport, Haras des Clarbec has announced that the now 14-year-old stallion Vagabond de La Pomme (Vigo d’Arsouilles x For Pleasure) will shift the focus from his sports career towards breeding duties.
Under Penelope Leprevost, Vagabond de La Pomme had a fantastic career
The pair finished as Vice Champions at the World Cup Finals in 2015 as well as ending 2nd in the CSI5* Hermès Grand Prix of Paris in 2017
2nd in the CSI5* Grand Prix of Basel in 2016
3rd in the CSI5* LGCT Grand Prix of Paris in 2016 and 3rd in the CSI5* LGCT Grand Prix of Chantilly in 2015 – to mention some of the many top result that made him earn almost a million euro in prize money.
Vagabond de La Pomme already has offspring competing at the highest level of the sport
such as J’Adore van het Schaeck, Jackson de Regor and Jenson van ´t Meulenhof.

Wilm Vermeir (BEL) and the 11-year-old mare Linguini de la Pomme (Marius Claudius x Tinka's Boy) won Wednesday's 1.45m Prize of Handwerk at CHIO Aachen
Vermeir took an early lead with a time of 62.61 seconds in this Table A class against the clock
None of those who followed could catch the Belgian rider; closest came Yuri Mansur and Away de Semilly (Diamant de Semilly x Watzmann) who with only five to go slotted into the runner-up spot after stopping the clock at 63.04 seconds
two home riders followed in third and fourth: Philip Rüping on Miss Chacco PS (Messenger x Chacco-Blue) with a time of 67.30
and Patrick Stühlmeyer on Accoton PS (Pikachu de Muze x Chacco-Blue) in 67.35
Rodrigo Pessoa (BRA) rode a beautiful round on Major Tom (Vagabond de la Pomme x Heartbreaker) to take the fifth place after clocking the time of 71.13
but this is my first time competing here," the happy winner commented to World of Showjumping.
"I have had Linguini for nine months at my place," Vermeir told about his winning mount
"She is related to one of my top horses Gentiane de la Pomme
Linguini is always really quick and has already won a few ranking classes
but I could be competitive with her straight away
because these classes are what she is here for – she is a naturally fast horse
I had a very fluent round and could keep going everywhere
but did not do anything risky; it was a perfect round."
After several years at the very highest level of the sport
the now 14-year-old stallion Vagabond de La Pomme (Vigo d’Arsouilles x For Pleasure) will shift his focus towards his breeding career
An announcement from Vagabond de La Pomme’s owners Haras des Clarbec has been released today
reading that the stallion is to be retired this year to focus on breeding duties.
Vagabond de La Pomme has had a fantastic sports career
finishing as Vice Champion at the World Cup Finals in 2015 with Penelope Leprevost in the saddle as well as ending 2nd in the CSI5* Hermès Grand Prix of Paris in 2017
such as J’Adore van het Schaeck, Jackson de Regor and Jenson van ´t Meulenhof.

„This is my first time here at Devon
so I couldn’t have imagined a better way to end it,“ expressed Jobs
„I think my horses have been so consistent and so amazing all three days
To win the Leading Junior Jumper Rider Award is just so special to me
because it showed that I was consistent over the last three days
Twenty-eight entries took their turn over the Kelvin Bywater course
but only eight were able to advance to the final tiebreaker
Emma Sargent and Winchester set the time to beat as the first pair to complete the jump-off without error
but they were more conservative with a time of 43.634 seconds
Jobs and Sandor de la Pomme entered the ring one round later and still had three horses coming behind them
they made tight turns and galloped speedily through the timers in 37.109 seconds to take over the top spot
so we definitely practiced it in the warm-up with the short turn,“ noted Jobs
I couldn’t have asked for more from my horse.“
None of the other riders were able to best Jobs‘ time and leave the jumps intact
McKayla Langmeier had the fastest 4-fault round as the pathfinder during the tiebreaker with Manhattan
Their beautiful effort earned them the third place honors as well as the Shalanno Style of Riding Award
which is presented to the junior rider who best exemplifies the American style of equitation
The fourth place award went to Giavanna Rinaldi and Dulf van den Bisschop
while Friday night’s winners Madison Goetzmann and Wrigley rounded out the top five and earned the Junior Jumper Reserve Championship
Seventeen-year-old Jobs began riding Sandor de la Pomme in December of 2014 and has been riding with Missy Clark and John Brennan since she was 12 years old
„I’ve had Sandor de la Pomme for about a year and a half,“ said Jobs
I have so many incredible things to say about him
He has brought me up from the 1.30m to this level
He’s really a once in a lifetime horse.“
Although this is Jobs‘ last junior year
she is dedicated to the sport and plans to spend the summer in Europe and take a gap year before college to focus on riding
„I plan to be down in Florida after Finals in November,“ she stated
„I have a great group of horses under me right now and great trainers
There are so many people who put in all the time and work
It really makes the job easier for me.“
The action will continue Sunday with the Carriage Pleasure Drive and Pony Jumper Championship
Highlight events during the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair include the $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby and the $225,000 Sapphire Grand Prix of Devon CSI4*
The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair is the longest running and largest outdoor multi-breed competition in the United States
With the grandeur of Philadelphia’s prestigious Main Line setting the stage
the event features a world-class field that annually ranks among the most prominent internationally
The event also includes the Country Fair that offers world-class shopping
multiple dining options and special entertainment events
Emma Kurtz Outshines the Field in Junior Hunter Divisions at Devon Horse Show
delivering four amazing rounds atop the stunning Evermore to sweep the Small Junior Hunter 15 and Under division was a piece of cake
The judges also selected Kurtz and Evermore as the winners of the Angelo Perpetual Trophy for exemplifying classic hunter style
who said the 6-year-old gelding set foot in the Dixon Oval for the first time on Friday
Kurtz and Scott Stewart both showed Evermore at WEF and Kentucky in the Juniors and First Years
but I had no expectations at all for him,“ Kurtz explained
so sometimes he makes mistakes; it’s normal
And then after I won both classes the first day
so I wanted to have a smooth round and not scare him or anything
Kurtz and Evermore rode away with the Overall Small Junior Hunter Championship and the Devon Grand Junior Hunter Championship
„It was incredible,“ Kurtz smiled
„We just kept having to keep circling back
I think I have five new saddle pads.“
„It’s a very unique situation for us where she doesn’t own anything of her own,“ Chris explained
„Her dad is a high school math teacher
To be able to do this at this level… just the people and the support are incredible
Amanda (Lyerly) looks out for her and is always coordinating things for her
She obviously has to ride well and keep the rides
but the generosity of people has been overwhelming.“
Kurtz also earned the honor of second-best child rider on a horse
while the top honors went to McKayla Langmeier
Lucy Deslauriers earned the third place recognition
and Coco Fath earned enough points for fourth
„It’s amazing,“ Langmeier said
„I actually thought Emma was going to get it
The week started out really well because I had my horse in the equitation that I’ve known forever
and then John (Brennan) was so nice to let me ride his two hunters
The Overall Large Junior Hunter Championship was awarded to Teddy Vlock and Grey Street
who also earned the championship in the Large Junior Hunter 16-17 division
said Grey Street was his first junior hunter
the duo went from being unable to claim even a reserve championship to being crowned circuit champions at WEF and winning at Devon
„He’s a horse of a lifetime for me,“ Vlock said
but he’s also helped me get some exposure
My other horses are actually easier for me to find the jumps on
but I just have such a good connection with him at this point that I ride him better
He’s number one in the country right now.“
The reserve championship in the Large Junior Hunter 16-17 division went to Hunter Siebel and Pure Abundance
In the Large Junior Hunter 15 and Under division
Kaitlyn Williams and Rockette earned enough points to come away with the championship
McKayla Langmeier and Levland were awarded the reserve championship honors
The Small Junior Hunter 15 and Under championship went to Emma Kurtz and Evermore
while the reserve championship was earned by McKayla Langmeier and Maraschino
the championship was claimed by Hunter Siebel and Krave
with Bergen Sanderford and Perspective picking up the reserve championship
Augusta Iwasaki and Kingston Earn Devon Grand Hunter Pony Championship
PA – May 28 – The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair added several more champions to its historic list of victors on Saturday
many young and hopeful riders awaited to hear final results announced in the Gold Ring
only one was crowned the Devon Grand Hunter Pony Champion and that was Augusta Iwasaki
The 12-year-old rider and her 13-year-old mount
had a triumphant weekend in the Large Pony Hunter division
Iwasaki secured three first place ribbons to lock in the Large Pony Hunter Championship and the overall Grand Hunter Pony Championship
„He’s perfect,“ Iwasaki (left) said about Kingston
It felt really good to win the Grand Champion at Devon
who assumes the role of mother and trainer
shed some light on her daughter’s training
„They work on being straight,“ she commented
Kingston is a ‚freak-a-zoid‘ of a pony
Also celebrating victories in the Gold Ring was the Gochman family
secured multiple tricolor ribbons on Saturday
The reserve championship title in the Large Pony Hunter division went to the older of the two siblings
who also earned the reserve honors in the Medium Pony Hunter division
„Devon is one of the best shows,“ Mimi expressed
hard to do well and even harder to get reserve.“
Sharing her sentiments about Devon was Mimi’s younger sister
who rode away with the champion and reserve champion recognition in the Small Pony Hunter division
„This is one of my favorite shows,“ Sophie said
„It’s such a privilege to be here and to qualify
Sophie posed with Bit of Love for the championship presentation photo
before running out of the ring and swapping ponies for the reserve championship photo op with Love Me Tender
„Bit of Love is a little bit more round,“ Sophie said
while Love Me Tender is really long and low
For Love Me Tender you have to be really soft on her neck
you just have to move very slow and smooth.“
The New York natives train with Scott Stewart and Ken Berkley at River’s Edge Farm
and have been working out of the New Jersey base for about three years
„I’ve known Scott for a really long time,“ Sophie shared
He tells me I have to stay still and calm down
He’s so great and I’ve learned so much since I’ve been with him.“
Grace Debney was crowned champion of the Medium Pony Hunter division
She pulled double duties in the medium pony classes
but he has an amazing personality,“ Debney said about her top-performing pony
„He’s kind of goofy and he’s so sweet
We’ve been together for a year.“
shared her thoughts on the two ponies and how they’ve transformed Debney’s riding
„It was nice that Denmark got to win a class here
Without him she could never have learned to ride Sporty
Denmark has won the USEF Pony Medal finals a few times – he’s been great
He hasn’t been here for a long time because he hasn’t had that hard of a job
But it was easy for her to get him qualified without going to many horse shows
The Junior Weekend will come to a close on Sunday with the highlight event being Pony Jumper Championship
and the Adult Jumpers will close out the evening session at the Dixon Oval
followed by a recognition ceremony at 6:30 p.m
fire and EMS members with a valid ID will receive free admission

As the first guest to ever stay the night in the micro-hotel La Pomme
our journalist Hilary Edesess interviews the architects behind the project
Freshly fallen in the Normandy countryside
the micro-hotel La Pomme du Bois Rond—a 16m² wooden guest house that is shaped like an apple—is officially open for reservations as of August 3
While visiting La Pomme for its July 28 inauguration
I interviewed the architecture team responsible for the creation of the apple
I also had the privilege of being the first guest ever to stay a night in La Pomme.
READ: an article (in French only) featuring Hilary Edesess as the first journalist to stay in La Pomme
The apple features the comforts of a hotel room: electricity
a fully equipped bathroom and amenities that include a coffee machine and dishes
I slept comfortably on the hotel-quality bed gazing up at the Normandy sky through a transparent roof.
READ our previously published article on La Pomme here: “Normandy Inaugurates New Micro Hotel: The Pomme du Bois Rond”
In this interview for ArchiExpo e-Magazine, I spoke to architect Aurélie Poirrier and small business entrepreneur Julien Decaillon, who make up the firm Capsulo and who are responsible for the project
ArchiExpo e-Magazine: Is this your first completed project as an architect
Aurélie Poirrier: I completed a similar micro-hotel in 2017 called Caballon de Monsieur Plocq which is near Nantes
a man who actually existed who had acquired the nickname “the bird charmer”
Because the Caballon’s location is part of the Loire Estuary
its design was inspired by a story that Monsieur Plocq had raised enough birds to lift up this imaginary vessel and carry him to Africa
ArchiExpo e-Magazine: How was Capsulo formed
going long periods without sleeping in a hotel
I always found those experiences to be impactful and I wanted other people to be able to experience that feeling as well
Aurélie was living in the same shared flat I lived in
One day I looked at what she was working on
the 3D renderings of the Caballon and I said
I hope to continue.” And so we launched Capsulo in October of 2019
ArchiExpo e-Magazine: What are Capsulo’s objectives
Julien Decaillon: Capsulo has two principal goals: to allow people to experience adventures close to home
we came up with the concept of the “micro-hotel d’exploration” which has a few specificities
Each one is created as a unique custom-made piece
it contains a bedroom for a double bed and a bathroom
and it is constructed in areas that focus on local gastronomy and allow for tourist interactions with local farmers.
Aurélie Poirrier: It’s beside a forest called the Bois Rond where we are very far from civilization
A couple here could be naked without anyone seeing them
So we had the idea that the Bois Rond was a garden of Eden where people come to re-energize
The second inspiration was from Gautier Fihue
the farmer and owner of the land that hosts La Pomme
which is different from other farmers who don’t find it practical to have trees in their fields
Gautier liked the idea of a seed that becomes a tree and then a fruit
And the apple worked well because we are in Normandy
which is known for apples and apple products
ArchiExpo e-Magazine: How did you find the location for La Pomme du Bois Rond and meet Gautier Fihue
Aurélie Poirrier: We posted on the Civam website
We wanted to start there because it was important for us to highlight farming as a career and to reconnect city dwellers with the world of agriculture
We feel there’s currently a gap; we buy our vegetables and we don’t know where they come from
I think that the agricultural world suffers a bit from this incomprehension and it was important for us to rebuild this link
ArchiExpo e-Magazine: Who did you collaborate with on the project
Aurélie Poirrier: We worked with Solid to build the structure
It wasn’t easy to find a carpenter that wasn’t afraid to do what we wanted
and that could do everything including finishing touches and plumbing
The carpenters at SOLID make up a young dynamic team who have already worked on several artistic creations so they were keen to work with us
We also were looking for someone close to Paris where we live because it was our first project and it was important for me to follow the evolution of La Pomme’s construction
For a complicated object like this we also had to have regular meetings in order to find solutions
Photo credits: La Pomme du Bois Rond ©La Filmerie Production
ArchiExpo e-Magazine: What materials did you use
For the material covering the large skylights, we had to do a lot of research. It had to be light-weight and be able to fit the shape of La Pomme. We ended up with the transparent Crystal tarp, fabricated by a Parisian workshop Sellerie du Lys which usually makes saddlery for cars and trucks.
which we chose for its technical properties
ArchiExpo e-Magazine: How did you construct La Pomme to minimize its impact on the environment
Aurélie Poirrier: We put in an electric radiant heating strip under the floor, an eco-film from Sud Rayonnement
we won’t need to heat that much because of the bit of sun that there is heats a lot and the heat stays because of the insulation.
We built in two doors to create air circulation which is really important because it’s hot inside on summer afternoons due to the greenhouse effect.
They’re impermeable but because the wooden strips are slightly separated
we have good air circulation between the inside and the outside
We added ventilation up top in case that wasn’t enough.
ArchiExpo e-Magazine: Did you find that the pandemic helped others to see the value in your goals of tourism locally?
it’s a good moment for our concept because we intend to allow people to experience extraordinary journeys without going to the other end of the earth
and to say that the extraordinary is maybe only a few steps from home
ArchiExpo e-Magazine: What are your future plans with Capsulo
Aurélie Poirrier: This first project was an experiment in mixing architecture and agriculture
The farmer who owns the land allowed us to use this spot and was open to working together with us
It’s different from a classic tourism project and we hope it will inspire others to host us in different locations
We also consult for architectural projects for people who would like to build a similar object and turn it into a guest house.
She’s been working on several dance projects and took full advantage of her time in La Pomme to dance all night

hosts the FEI WBFSH Jumping World Breeding Championship for Young Horses
it was time for the traditional FEI Zangersheide Sires of the World Grand Prix
where 54 approved stallions battled it out for the sought-after title – and what a competition it turned out to be.
The course set at 1.50m counted 14 obstacles and 17 efforts
The Belgian course designer Eugène Mathy had put together a tough test
with a triple combination at the beginning of the course
an open water at fence number ten and a final Zangersheide upright causing headache for the riders
A total of 14 pairs cleared the first round though
and joined the deciding jump-off over a shortened course
Gudrun Patteet (BEL) on Sea Coast Valdelamadre Clooney (Centeur Z x Quantum) was the first to go clear in the first round
and was joined by Sebastian Adams (GER) on Kolibris Villanova Dree Boeken (King Kolibri x Vulkano)
Gilles Thomas (BEL) on Feromas van Beek Z (Fantomas de Muze x Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve)
Robinson Maupiler (FRA) on Moncler van Overis (Kannan x Darco)
Bas Moerings (NED) on Ipsthar (Denzel Vt Meulenhof x Farmer)
Richard Vogel (GER) on Carlchen S (Comme Il Faut 5 x Gelha’s VDL Emilion) and Nicola Philippaerts (BEL) on Gijs (Kashmir van Schuttershof x Numero Uno)
Also Christophe Grangier (FRA) on Catch Boom Bang (Cornet’s Prinz x Argentinus)
Hannes Ahlmann (GER) on Nerrado (Nekton x Acorado)
Philip Rüping (GER) on Casallco (Casall x Contender)
Frederic Bouvard (FRA) on Hugh Grant de Muze (Shindler de Muze x Jalisco B)
Koen Vereecke (BEL) on Kasanova de la Pomme (Bamako de Muze x Malito de Reve)
Gerben Morsink (NED) on Navarone Z (Nabab de Reve x Amor)
as well as Christian Ahlmann (GER) on Dominator 2000 Z (Diamant de Semilly x Cassini I) and Gilles Thomas (BEL) on Uncas S (Udarco x Primo des Bruyeres) cleared the first-round track
While the event at Zangersheide is run under strict Covid-19 protocols
living with the horses and riders every step of the way in the jump-off and cheering their favourites on loudly
Koen Vereecke on Kasanova de la Pomme stopped the clock on 34.14 to take the lead
When Germany’s Christian Ahlmann – the penultimate rider – entered the ring on the huge-striding Dominator 2000 Z
This was quickly replaced by roaring applause though
as Ahlmann and the popular stallion crossed the finish line in 34.15 – just behind Vereecke
As if the class could not get more exciting
Belgium’s very own young gun Gilles Thomas – the last man in the jump-off – broke the beams in 34.16 to put him on the podium as third
pushing Hannes Ahlmann to fourth and Gudrun Patteet to fifth.
Koen Vereecke was over the moon with the win and with his horse
“I think that from fence one to two I lost time – my horse was playing
On the last line I also could have done five
luckily for me Christian did not do that either,” the happy winner laughed.
it is like Formula 1,” Christian Ahlmann smiled to the press afterwards
Dominator feels good and is getting better and better
And that is the most important thing for me: That we seem to be on a very good way with him
I could have done one stride less to the last fence and I think that was where it would have been possible to be quicker.”

Koen Vereecke has had the season of his life
Vereecke broke into the Belgian A-team this summer – going from strength to strength with the 12-year-old stallion Kasanova de La Pomme (Bamako de Muze x Malito de Reve)
Gallen at the beginning of the outdoor season
Vereecke finished it off by jumping double clear at the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup Final in Barcelona – where he helped his team take the win as well as secure qualification for the Paris Olympics
While Vereecke might not be a household name outside Belgium
he is no newcomer – his first senior Nations Cup appearance took place already 20 years ago
I have good horses,” Vereecke says humbly about his sensational 2022-season
Vereecke was born into horses and started riding at a young age
he had only ever ridden young horses though and was sure that would be his calling – training and selling future prospects
could go into the bigger sport a little bit
I was always forced to sell the best horses to keep my business going
I probably have the best horses that I have ever had in my stable.”
I probably have the best horses that I have ever had in my stable
Vereecke runs his own stable together with his son Andres
while his wife Karline De Brabander is in charge of her family’s renowned De Muze-stud in Sint-Niklaas
I have a stable of 30 boxes together with my son
I have about ten horses for me to ride and my son has about 15-20
The stallions that I ride are stabled at De Muze
The De Brabander-family has been supportive of me; I ride about 10-12 horses for them
including some younger horses and five to six older ones
Karline runs the stable at De Muze and I run mine
so it works quite well – and if something works
2022 has been an unbelievable year for Vereecke
one of the horses on the team could not jump
so I got in for the Nations Cup with Kasanova and we delivered a result of clear and four
where we jumped double clear and after that we went to Hickstead – and jumped double clear again
and then I was selected for the team for Barcelona
I think Kasanova improved a lot this summer
I do think our success is about the whole team around us as well
And it all began with my parents giving me a chance to start riding
I believe it is about everyone who has been involved; the breeders
her family that gave me the chance to ride good horses… There are so many people to thank.”
I love to win and winning a Nations Cup is an unbelievable feeling
“Competing for your national team is one of the nicest things you can do as a rider
I enjoyed riding for the team already at the beginning of my career
I love to win and winning a Nations Cup is an unbelievable feeling; you do it with other riders
there are so many good riders at the moment who can win – the competition is so tight – and that makes winning even more amazing nowadays.”
Vereecke started to ride the now 12-year-old stallion Kasanova de La Pomme two years ago
then he went for over four years to Germany
and when he came back my wife rode him for over a year,” Vereecke tells
“I took over the reins a bit more than two years ago
and last year we won the Sires of the World in Lanaken and he has really proven himself since
He has his own personality: At home he can be a little bit lazy
and my wife told me to start quietly with him
that he gets more motivated once he gets going – and he really likes to jump
he is really focused and has a lot of blood
he actually only gets better; he gets more concentrated when it gets more difficult.”
“His best quality is that he always does his best
he always wants to get to the other side of the fence,” Vereecke continues
he is careful – he has so many good qualities
it was a 1.40m class and it was raining like hell
saying: ‘This one is a super star – maybe not now
I thought he was unbelievable already then
bucking between fences has come to be Kasanova’s trademark
“Sometimes the bucking gets a little bit annoying
because I think it is part of his personality,” Vereecke smiles
“I believe that if I try to take it out of him
When I am in the ring with him and we jump 1.60m
it is still easy; I never have to push him
and if he is able to buck and jump – then so be it
This summer he has also proved that he can breed and compete at the highest level
he sometimes has to cover already that same evening and he also does so every day he is at home
and he is actually quiet – that is a great thing with him.”
Vereecke considers himself mostly self-made
and by looking at other riders,” he explains
tried to be better all the time and I learn by watching the good ones.”
Vereecke applies the same strategy to his son Andres by letting him figure out the industry – mostly on his own
and I do think it is good for my son to do this own thing
seeing him grow from a little kid into the rider he is today
but we have also been forced to sell the good horses that he has been riding to keep the business going and build the stable
I am always trying to find young horses for him that we can build up together
“It is not easy to find enough good horses for two riders though,” Vereecke continues
I think having two riders is an advantage for us
and we are quite different in our riding styles
I ride very natural and forward; he keeps them more together
others like me – we try to find the best way for each horse
and we try to bring the horses to the right rider instead of trying to change the horses.”
“I think the biggest challenge in our sport is to keep the good horses
making sure that they stay sound and healthy
and try to treat the horses as natural as possible
unless they have to jump on grass,” he tells
“Keeping the horses barefoot is something my father already did
so I guess we have been on the forefront of it before the French and the Swedish made it famous
We always thought it was better for the horses
I think the biggest benefit of keeping the horses barefoot is that it helps to keep the horses sound – I really believe we have had less injuries because of it
that is something that cannot be ignored.”
“The most important thing for me is that my horses stay healthy and sound
and me as a rider as well – those are really my only goals
but my plan is to have a quiet winter and keep my focus on next summer
My dream is to ride at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris… but that is a dream
I will do my best to get there with Kasanova
It is always difficult to make the Belgian team
you always see – not only in Belgium – how keeping four top combinations in form and ready for a championship is not that simple
Every year when there is a big championship
you see good combinations falling out for one reason or another
That is why I say my main goal is to keep both my horse and myself healthy.”
the better we are as we have the experience and knowledge
but back then I always lost them,” Vereecke continues
“They were either sold or left to other stables because I had to make my business go around
Now I have great support from the De Brabander-family and their horses are not for sale: The stallions cover
and their mares are used for embryo transfer – and they stay
This has given me the opportunities to reach for the higher level
For sure this is the best year of my career
if you stay fit in your body and don’t get injured
And the good thing is that the older we get
the better we are as we have the experience and knowledge.”
“It is much more professional now and has become more detail oriented
they take better care of themselves and do other sports to stay fit
the material is lighter and the horses have changed
is that to get somewhere you always need a good horse.”
“I hope we stay as an Olympic sport,” Vereecke continues
I think it is something most riders understand and take very seriously
There is a lot of pressure from the outside
from people who don’t understand our sport so I think we have to educate the general public
we have to make sure we preserve horsemanship – it is our duty to teach the younger generation how to care for their horses.”
Maelle Martin kept the victory in France in Sunday's CSI3* Grand Prix of St Lo. Aboard her stallion Giovani de la Pomme
25-year-old Maelle Martin was not to be beat by her competitive compatriots Marc Dilasser and Alexandre Fontanelle
Only ten riders managed to keep a clean sheet all the way through the 1.50m CSI3* course of the Grand Prix of St Lo
Great Britain’s Joseph Clayton and France’s Jérôme Hurel
the victory fell into the hands of the young French lady rider Maelle Martin and her 10-year-old stallion Giovani de la Pomme – sired by the For Pleasure-son Shindler de Muze out of the famous mare Narcotique de Muze II
Martin turned out unbeatable in the jump-off in St Lo
France’s Marc Dilasser and the 9-year-old Cliffton (Clinton x Hallando II van de Watering) gave it a good try
but stopped the clock over a second later than Martin
It took Alexandre Fontanelle another 1.2 seconds to settle for third place aboard Quaprice de l’Etivant (Carpaccio x Qualisco III)
Belgium’s Christophe Vanderhasselt and the Belgian bred Gino van de Vrunte (Jokinal de Bornival x Karioka del Follee) finished in fourth place in 38.52 seconds
while Germany’s Maximilian Lill and ABC Trixi (Quidam de Revel x Carolus I) ended up fifth

France’s leading lady rider Pénélope Leprevost delivered the only double clear in Saturday evening’s CSI5* Championship of Knokke – powered by Invest Mobile – to take the top honours at Knokke Hippique in Knokke Heist
that included a Garia Golf Cart for the winner
saw clears come sparingly in the first round
only two out of the 35 riders managed to finish without faults over Uliano Vezzani’s first round track that counted a total of thirteen fences that included two combinations
The two that jumped clear – Pénélope Leprevost of France and Romain Duguet of Switzerland – were joined by another six for round two
to total it to eight – with Daniel Deusser of Germany on one single time penalty
France’s Aldrick Cheronnet on two penalties and then Olivier Philippaerts of Belgium
Jaroslaw Skrzyczynski of Poland and Zoe Conter of Belgium on four faults
With generous prize money and World Ranking points at stake
there was no problem motivating the riders returning for the second round under the floodlights
With the riders carrying their faults from the first round forwards
tactics also came into play – and as it would play out it was all about being strategic
who finished on her four faults from the first round and with a time of 46.52 seconds
as next to go Philippaerts caught Kraut’s time when he crossed the finish line in 45.96 seconds aboard Ikker (Ogano Sitte x Up To Date)
With only two time penalties on his record
Cheronnet had the chance to take over the lead
and went for a steady clear on the well-jumping Atlantys By Wisbecq (Argentinus x Darco) only to record one more time penalty – taking over the pole position on a total of three time penalties
and just like Cheronnet he played his cards wisely
A steady clear round on the 10-year-old gelding SX Hildago VG (Quadrillo x Andiamo) over the shortened eight-fence track proved to be good enough for the lead with a single time penalty on the score board carried through from the first round
The first rider on a clean sheet to enter the ring was Duguet on Sherazade du Gevaudan (Tinka’s Boy x Iago C)
and now it was all about repeating the clear from the first round
the vertical into the double fell to the ground and Duguet went down the result list to eventually finish 6th
The 2016 Olympic team gold medallist delivered
and remained ice cold to jump another clear round on the stunning 12-year-old stallion Vagabond de la Pomme (Vigo D Arsouilles Stx x For Pleasure) – taking home the top honours ahead of Deusser and Cheronnet
The five-star classes kicked off in the morning with yet another win for Belgium
this time around it was Pieter Devos that made it to the top of the podium in the 1.45m Tops Jumps Prize – riding Haloubet Hitchcock (Baloubet du Rouet x Heartbreaker)
It was two American ladies that topped the class early on; first Catherine Tyree who later was passed by Lucy Davis who took over the lead aboard Boucheroum (Guidam Sohn x Quick Star) after a lightening fast round over the five fences in the second phase against the clock
the American domination was not to last as Pieter Devos quickly thereafter entered the ring and pushed all competition aside to shave off 1.37 seconds on Davis’ time
Living legend John Whitaker came close to catch home hero Devos
but was still 0.62 seconds behind the winning time
and had to settle for second place on Argento (Arko III x Gasper) – pushing Davis down to third

Penelope Leprevost with Vagabond de la Pomme
The FEI is looking into Penelope Leprevost’s treatment of her horse Vagabond de la Pomme after an incident that occurred during the 2016 Longines FEI World Cup Finals
that took place on the warm-up during Monday’s concluding rounds
has caused a stir both in equestrian media outlets and even more so in social media
stumbled badly while being warmed up as he was trotting on long rains – and was on his knees with his nose in the sand
Leprevost’s reaction when the stallion got back on his legs
The sequence was aired directly on TV – also on FEI TV – and has now become an issue for the FEI after first sparking a heated debate in Sweden yesterday
“The FEI is looking into the full circumstances of the incident in which the French horse Vagabond de la Pomme stumbled very badly prior to the first round of Monday’s competition and the rider
The FEI Steward on duty in the warm-up reported the incident to the FEI and also to the FEI Chief Steward,” said a spokesperson for the FEI on Monday night
“The French team vet Jérôme Thévenot also saw the horse stumbling
but felt that the horse was fine to go into the arena
Vagabond de la Pomme was clear in the first round
and was given a thorough check over in the stables afterwards by Jérôme Thévenot
who reported that the horse was perfectly fine
Horse welfare is central to everything the FEI does
and is also a priority for both the Swedish National Federation and the organising committee of the Gothenburg Horse Show
The FEI’s Code of Conduct for the Welfare of the Horse is in place to ensure that horse welfare is protected at all FEI event,” continued the FEI spokesperson
nor the French Equestrian Federation have so far made an official statement on the incident.

Quebec has some of the best ice climbing in North America, from roadside classics to remote test-pieces there’s something for everyone. The province has always been a must-visit for veteran climbers from around the world and this year was no exception as people from western Canada, the US and Europe travelled there to climb.
The most recent visit from climbers outside the province was by Will Gadd and Sarah Hueniken, who joined up with Nelson Rioux for the first ascent of a new 30-metre M8 called Charleberta at Cap à l’Aigle. And last week, top European climbing guide Jeff Mercier teamed up with local Tom Canac for the first ascent of a 50-metre WI6R variation to La Loutre called La Gerbille.
Earlier this winter, Tanja Schmitt and Matthias Scherer met with locals at Rivière St Marguerite and climbed the classics Speedy Gonzales and Le Mulot, as well put up a variation to Pilier. And Rockies climber JC Dubeau teamed up with local Marty Theriault for some classics at Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie National Park, including La Pomme d’Or.
Also this winter, Americans Jesse Huey and Matt Segal also visited Hautes-Gorges to climb La Pomme d’Or and La Ruée Vers. Check out some of the photos from Quebec ice below.

Such is the question explored by a new documentary being screened in the city itself this month
largely forgotten connection between France and New York
It invites the viewer to think a bit about how things could have been
if both the French name and the French themselves had just tried to linger a little longer
A video released on social media on March 30 shows French rider Penelope Leprevost’s mount
stumbling badly during warm-up for the second-to-last round of the Longines FEI World Cup Show Jumping Final in Gothenburg
Leprevost stops him and appears to look down at his legs before booting him sharply forward.
Leprevost and the gelding went on to jump in both rounds on the last day of the final
Following the outcry of concern on social media
the Fédération Equestre Internationale has announced they are investigating the incident.

The video of the warm-up was initially aired on a local television station.
UPDATED: Leprevost responded to the incident on her official Facebook page
and I really thought that both of us were going to fall down
I immediately checked that he was not injured
I then wanted him to pull himself together
My goal was to wake him up but not to push him too hard
The French team’s vet also checked that he was fine and had no problems
“I am deeply sorry that I over-reacted and was too strong with my horse
and I want to express my sincere apologies,” she continued
“I place great importance on the trust and cooperation between myself and my horses
I also have the greatest respect for their state of mind and their physical well-being.”
the FEI released a statement that they had concluded their investigation and determined that no disciplinary action was needed
“The FEI has investigated the full circumstances of the incident with Penelope LePrevost and her horse Vagabond de la Pomme in the warm-up arena at Gothenburg
“Reports have been received from the chief steward
who had been briefed about the incident by the steward on duty at the time
Penelope Leprevost has stated publicly that she regrets her actions and expressed her remorse for over-reacting in the heat of the moment
She has said that this sort of incident will not happen again and that the welfare of her horses is extremely important to her
Vagabond de la Pomme was given a thorough check-over in the stables by the French team vet Jérôme Thévenot who reported that the horse was fit to compete
The FEI is assured that such an incident will not occur again and
Claude Bérubé was looked up to by many across generations for his world-class contributions
He leaves behind a legacy of memorable accomplishments
Many have heard of the famous La Pomme d’Or on Mont de l’Equerre in Hautes-gorges de la rivière Malbaie
the real gem of the crag for mixed alpinists is the 350-metre La Loutre M5+ WI5+ first climbed by Bérubé and Régis Richard with the help of Jacques Lemay back in 1977
three years before the FA of La Pomme d’Or
and they bivied behind the massive pillar near the top of the climb
The great American ice climber Jeff Lowe mentioned Bérubé in his book Ice World: Techniques and Experiences of Modern Ice Climbing
Claude Bérubé and Regis Richard climbed the 1,000-foot Le Loutre (IV

Veteran winter climber Louis Rousseau said
he was like our Barry Blanchard.” Bérubé’s list of ascents is second to none
and includes landmark lines like the first ascent of the Southwest Pillar of Mount Thor on Baffin Island in the mid-1990s with Francois-Guy Thivierge
He also climbed the east ridge of Mount Mjolnir on Baffin Island
Bérubé climbed Denali and Mount Steele in the Yukon
but always looked up to him as one of climbing Canadian pioneers,” said top Quebec climbed Jean-Pierre Ouellet
“On the handful of times I had the pleasure to chat with him he always seem have the fire within still burning for climbing even after all those years.”
Bérubé established a number of climbs in Grands Jardins

Montmorency Falls is a large waterfall on the Montmorency River
The falls are located on the boundary between the borough of Beauport
about 12 km from the heart of old Quebec City
The area surrounding the falls is protected within the Montmorency Falls Park
The falls are at the mouth of the Montmorency River where it drops over the cliff shore into the Saint Lawrence River
They are 30 metres higher than Niagara Falls
They were named in 1613 by Samuel de Champlain
who served as viceroy of New France from 1620 until 1625
the name La Belle Pomme was synonymous with fine cuisine in Columbus
The famed cooking school originated in a small storefront in Upper Arlington and later moved into prime space Downtown at the Lazarus department store
some of the most famous chefs in the country — Jacques Pepin
Rose Levy Beranbaum and Sheila Lukins — passed through its doors to share techniques
recipes and a passion for well-prepared food
Those doors closed 20 years ago this month
didn’t start the school with the goal of creating a Columbus institution
was transplanted to the middle of Ohio after her husband accepted a teaching position at Ohio State University
had been studying cooking in Philadelphia before the move
She initially began working as a translator for the Columbus Museum of Art
“No one was giving cooking classes in Columbus” at the time
so she placed an ad in the Upper Arlington newspaper and started teaching in her home
the classes outgrew her house and she faced a decision: pursue a master’s degree in fine arts and continue working at the museum or put all her resources into the cooking school
The museum curator helped Rosbottom make up her mind
Rosbottom rented a storefront on Northwest Boulevard at North Star Road in 1976 and opened La Belle Pomme — French for “The Beautiful Apple.”
The school attracted some of the biggest names in cooking
Television had few cooking programs at the time
and chefs had to travel to make their names known
The school had a reputation for selling out classes — which meant cookbook sales for chefs
“I think they really enjoyed coming to Columbus,” Rosbottom said
“People were anxious to learn; they were welcoming.”
the French chef taught standing-room-only classes for three days
After Italian cooking legend Hazan visited the next year
Time magazine wrote about the school and the growing gourmet movement in Columbus
Rosbottom expanded to a larger space — and
Lazarus approached her about buying the school and moving it to the Downtown store
but she eagerly accepted the offer because she would remain the director of the cooking school
too: The school expanded its kitchen space
and she obtained a budget for advertising and access to a housewares department filled with state-of-the-art equipment
the sale meant that the school could accept more students
5,000 students a year attended La Belle Pomme
filling the seats of more than 100 classes
“The best part of the school was the people,” Rosbottom said
“They came from far and wide — not only from Columbus and the suburbs but Dayton and northern Ohio
still keeps a binder filled with the recipes she received from the classes she took
“I feel like Betty Rosbottom kind of made a difference in my life,” Ritchie said
“Not only did I learn how to cook — techniques — but also how to source ingredients
Ritchie remembers Rosbottom as warm and gracious
The school’s teachers made the classes fun
and she later joined a wine-tasting group with some of them
loyal staff of teachers — including Steve Stover and Rich Terapak
who have been teaching together for 35 years
became a touchstone for central Ohio food enthusiasts — a small fraternity at the time
“She really brought cooking to the masses in Columbus.”
the closing allowed her to be in the same city with her husband
who several years earlier had accepted a teaching position in Massachusetts
(The couple were commuting between there and Columbus.)
Yet the school had propelled Rosbottom into a career in food that continues
For decades she wrote the syndicated cooking column “For the Gourmet,” which appeared for 20 years in The Dispatch; she is at work on her 12th cookbook
Rosbottom still teaches — including an occasional class in Columbus
often at the Seasoned Farmhouse cooking school in the Clintonville neighborhood
had heard so much about Rosbottom when she moved to Columbus more than 20 years ago that she featured her in the first issue of Edible Columbus
Wheeler tapped Rosbottom for advice on how to run a cooking school
“She really is a teacher at heart,” Wheeler said
“She really taught a whole generation to cook."

There are many phrases in French that use the word apple
but drawing connections between them would be like comparing apples to oranges
which have always been widely available in France
are perhaps the most regularly-used fruit in French phrases
the apple was even the symbol of a presidential candidate’s campaign
soon-to-be president Jacques Chirac declared himself to be a “mangeur de pommes”
and the apple became inextricably associated with his campaign
we share eight French expressions around the word apple
It is very likely that the phrase is not actually linked to apples at all
It probably stems from the old French expression tomber dans les pâmes
which means to faint due to a strong emotion
explanation traces the origins of the phrase to the theatre
French audiences would throw pommes cuites (cooked apples) in response to a poor performance
which were supposedly used in England (although that is likely a myth)
then ‘they would have fallen in the apples’
although it seems unlikely a cooked apple would knock someone out
Perhaps some fresh ones were thrown into the mix as well
usually in reference to other children their age
apples were often used as a unit of measurement since they were very common
which is where the phrase is thought to have originated
an equivalent expression would be ‘knee-high to a grasshopper’
This expression is most often translated as ‘a bone of contention’/’having a bone to pick with someone’
but a literal translation is an apple of discord
It means a topic of discussion or debate that is likely to cause arguments
The expression comes from a story in Greek mythology
offended at not being invited to a wedding
threw a golden apple inscribed with the message “For the most beautiful”
Aphrodite and Athena all argued over who was the most beautiful
forcing the mortal Paris to decide and eventually leading to the Trojan War
The expression is mostly used by saying someone threw the apple of discord: “il a jeté la pomme de la discorde”
Read more: Understand the difference between quoique and quoi que in French
Identical to the expression être bonne poire (being a ripe pear)
which is more commonly used than its apple equivalent
someone who is a ripe apple is someone who is too naïve and easily taken advantage of
a ripe apple is therefore someone who falls for tricks like ripe apples fall from trees
This is the name given to potatoes in French
although this tends to be used more regionally or colloquially
It is not entirely clear why potatoes are called ‘apple of the earth’ in French
although it is also the same in Dutch with “aardappel”
The first mention of pomme de terre in literature is attributed to Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau
When something is described as being aux pommes (literally
or something that has been treated with a lot of care and attention
Its origins are likely found in Parisian slang
although it is not exactly clear where it comes from
it also has an equivalent that is more commonly used: aux petits oignons
which means something that is done with great care
Whilst you might hear these two phrases in the French language
you would not hear them in France because they are Quebecois expressions only used in Canada
children use a pomme de route as a hockey puck
The second expression with Quebecois origins is chanter la pomme
translated as “singing the apple” to someone
referring to the apple that Eve ate in the Garden of Eden
The apple therefore seduced Eve by singing to her or enticing her
The second possible explanation is linked to the word paume
two possible suitors would hold hands and pressing your palm into the other person’s was a subtle way of showing interest

They are all handmade with homemade dough and a variety of toppings
There are the usual flavours such as Margherita
Vegetarian and Four Cheese and the non-traditional toppings like Savoyard
Oriental and the L’Arc en Ciel special
the staff give you a bottle of homemade infused chilli oil to drizzle at your own risk

But if you want a caviar pizza then this is the place for you
Truffle also appears heavily on this menu along with other high-quality ingredients such as burrata

Despite being on the cusp of Courchevel, the Black Pearl is well known amongst seasonnaires for serving the best pizza in the area
The restaurant decor is like sitting in a little cave with stone walls and a beautiful vaulted stone ceiling
this place gets booked up fast due to its popularity and excellent quality wood-fired pizzas
The menu serves only pizza and it has all the typical toppings but there are new varieties every season

There are few moments more frightening for a rider than a horse who stumbles suddenly in the course of normal business and threatens to go down
The fact that horses trip is a part of riding life—whether due to inattention on the horse’s part or the rider’s
A new video making the rounds on the internet this morning
demonstrates what many feel is an overreaction to just such a trip on the part of French rider Pénélope Leprévost
stumbles badly in the schooling ring at the Gothenburg World Cup Finals in Sweden
Leprévost’s handling of the incident has sparked a social media firestorm and now an FEI investigation
and could result in serious consequences for the world’s #5-ranked show jumper
We’ll let you take a look and will have more after the jump…
According to The Irish Field
an FEI representative has confirmed that an investigation is underway in Leprévost’s case and that the organization released the following statement:
“The FEI is looking into the full circumstances of the incident in which the French horse Vagabond de la Pomme stumbled very badly prior to the first round of Monday’s competition and the rider
The FEI Steward on duty in the warm-up reported the incident to the FEI and also to the FEI Chief Steward.”
who reported that the horse was perfectly fine.”
“Horse welfare is central to everything the FEI does
The FEI’s Code of Conduct for the Welfare of the Horse is in place to ensure that horse welfare is protected at all FEI events.”
For her part, Leprévost—who finished 8th in the event with Vagabond de la Pomme—took to Facebook this morning to apologize for her behavior
saying that she was afraid after the stumble and overreacted
Here is the message translated from French via Facebook:
It was actually quite frightening and I really thought that both of us were going to fall down
is what is the proper reaction for dealing with a trip
Plenty of trainers would argue that if the error was due purely to inattention on the part of the horse—especially a horse who is about to enter the arena to compete in a 1.50-1.60-meter jumping class—that some form correction or “wake up” would be warranted
is a correction even fair when the rider is (seemingly) encouraging the horse to lower his head and stretch on a long rein
how much “correction” is too much

With one Tour de France title already in the extended family
Irish youngster Daniel Martin has some big goals ahead of him
Irish Cycling News' Gerard Cromwell spoke with the soon to be professional after he inked a deal with America's Team Slipstream
Daniel Martin will become the latest Irish cyclist to turn professional when he lines out for the American based Team Slipstream in 2008
Having a former British amateur road race champion father and a sister of a Tour De France winner as a mother
there was only ever going to be one sport in the life of 21 year-old Daniel Martin
The son of former British professional Neil Martin and 1987 Tour De France winner Stephen Roche's sister
Daniel was born in England but declared for Ireland a couple of years ago and is now carving out a cycling career for himself and hopes to follow his father Neil
uncle Stephen and cousin Nicolas Roche into the paid ranks in 2008
"I was at my first bike race when I was ten days old," he joked
"and I've probably been to one almost every week since then
whether it was watching my Dad or later on
I don't remember Stephen racing but I've seen videos and stuff and it's great to have people like that to ask for advice."
Now in his third year at top French amateur club VC La Pomme
the Irish Under 23 star impressed enough last season to earn a paid deal but decided to wait another year
"but I decided to keep calm and stay amateur for another year
I wanted to continue to progress and make sure I'm ready when the time comes
I tend to be good in stage races and seem to get better as the race goes on."
is still racing and at 47 showed some of his younger competitors a clean pair of wheels when he won a stage of the Bertoni Gorey Three Day in Ireland at Easter
I don't really get much training advice off him," said Martin junior
"The advances of technology and knowledge towards training
even sports medicine and nutrition nowadays leaves him stumped
but it's great to have somebody to talk to who understands what it's like to do it himself
He's really influenced my career and helped me as much as he could."
Regarded as one of the best young climbers in Europe
Martin's ability to go uphill fast has made his signature the most sought after by the top ProTour teams this year
His talent has already earned him overall victory at the Tour De Savoie and the King of the Mountains title at the Ronde d'Isard in France this year
where he finished second on two mountain top finishes
Martin then won the sprints competition in the Tour of Chablis and also impressed in the tough Vuelta al Bidasoa in Spain
prompting Team Slipstream boss Jonathon Vaughters to snap up the young Irishman before somebody else did
"He is a highly sought after talent," said Vaughters last week
"We beat the ProTour teams to the punch in signing this hotshot
His talent and also his sense of humour will fit in perfectly to this team
We will be debuting Daniel at the Tour of Ireland and we will have a very competitive team
It will be the last race we do before the USPRO championships back home."
"A lot of people will be surprised I opted for Team Slipstream I think," Martin admitted
"They may not be the biggest team in the world right now
but they have very big plans for 2008 and onwards
but I think they aim to be in the ProTour in 2009
I think their tough stance on doping - they were the first team to introduce internal dope testing - is great and it's one of the reasons I signed for them
"They were the first team to make contact with me last year and have kept an eye on me since then," he revealed
"They've got some great riders and will likely be signing some big names in the future
They have a good mix of racing in both America and Europe and I'm really looking forward to it."
Although not signed as a professional until next season
Martin will get to show Irish fans what he's made of when he makes his debut for Team Slipstream in the inaugural Tour of Ireland on August 22nd as a stagiare (triallist)
"Although I haven't really heard much about it yet and still have to confirm my participation with VC La Pomme
who have looked after me for the past three years
to make my pro debut in the Tour of Ireland would be fantastic," said an excited Martin
"The atmosphere in Ireland for the big races is amazing and to have finishes in big city's like Cork
Patrick's Hill on the first stage into Cork is going to be something special
To be able to race in Ireland with Slipstream
The American squad is no stranger to competing on Irish roads
Stuart Gillespie took the best U23 prize at the 2005 FBD Insurance Rás while
former Under 23 world time trial champion Danny Pate took a stage win and finished second overall last year
having played pass the parcel with the yellow jersey with teammate Mike Friedman earlier in the race
The team also has a reputation for racing clean
having initiated a series of in-house dope tests on it's riders
a factor which also contributed to landing Martin's signature
"I tell my guys you can beat someone using EPO but you can't do it overnight," said Vaughters recently
"You just have to do everything perfectly and have a bit of luck."

Britain’s leading owner/breeders are often referred to as a ‘dying breed’ so it is easy to overlook the fact that one of that breed’s doyens
continues to see his operation go from strength to strength
Reed’s most recent big-race victory came courtesy of his homebred four-year-old filly La Pomme d’Amour
victorious in the Group 2 Prix de Pomone – Haras d’Etreham at Deauville on August 10
Guy Reed’s breeding operation (which is based at Copgrove Hall Stud
having previously been spread between that property and Nidd Park Stud) dates from 1968
when he bought his foundation mare Ardneasken
a daughter of Hyperion’s grandson Right Royal
At the time Ardneasken was carrying a Sovereign Path colt who
proved to be a terrific horse for his owner/breeder
earning a Timeform rating of 125 courtesy of wins in such races at the Extel Handicap at Goodwood and the Doonside Cup at Ayr
Two years later Ardneasken bred another cracking horse: Dakota
a son of Stupendous who won the 1975 Ebor Handicap
was trained for him by Sam Hall at Middleham) to Nidd Hall Stud and bred many winners by him
including Shotgun (trained by Hall’s protégé and successor Chris Thornton to finish fourth behind Shergar in the 1981 Derby)
Reed’s final big-race victory of the last century came in the 1999 November Handicap with the Thornton-trained Flossy
but by this stage he was using other trainers too
More recently Reed has enjoyed big-race victories with Barry Hills (including the 2003 Lincoln with Pablo and the 2005 Nunthorpe with La Cucaracha) and Kevin Ryan (including this season’s Duke Of York Stakes with Tiddliwinks)
whose dam Winnebago was trained by Chris Thornton to win at Hamilton in 1997
Having been raised at Copgrove Hall before joining Fabre’s stable
she has thus followed in the footsteps of her sire Peintre Celebre: for approximately the final 15 years of the 20th century
Copgrove Hall annually agisted a batch of yearlings for the Wildenstein family
winner of the Arc from Fabre’s stable in 1997
being one of the stars to spend some of his formative months under this regime
The restaurant's dining room will stay empty until further notice
Only part of the restaurant staff will be reassigned
and management noted that the current circumstances were at the root of the decision
It was not a question of the quality of the team
Whereas the situation was already very fragile following months of forced closure due to lockdown
there was little doubt that it would become even more difficult in light of the curfew imposed by the government last week
only half will be able to get reassigned to other tasks
The other half will inevitably be made redundant
After the news that Manko--a Peruvian restaurant wtih food by chef Gaston Acurio--would not be coming to Royal Hamilius complex after all
La Pomme Cannelle's closure is just another example of the enormous difficulties currently encountered by Luxembourg’s gastronomic landscape
Penelope Leprevost has offered her “sincere apologies” for the way she rode her horse in the Gothenburg warm-up ring
The French showjumper published a statement on her Facebook page accepting that she “over-reacted” to Monday’s (28 March) incident
H&H reported that Penelope’s horse
her World Cup final ride Vagabond De La Pomme
while trotting on a long rein in the collecting ring
His rider’s reaction attracted widespread criticism as the video was shared online
The FEI has since announced it will be investigating the incident
describing Penelope’s reaction as “very rough”
reads: “People have been upset by images broadcast via social networks of my horse Vagabond De La Pomme who nearly fell during the warm-up before the World Cup Final in Gothenburg
“I immediately checked that he was not injured
“I am deeply sorry that I over-reacted and was too strong with my horse and I want to express my sincere apologies
“I place great importance on the trust and cooperation between myself and my horses
I also have the greatest respect for their state of mind and their physical well-being.”
An FEI spokesman said: “The FEI is looking into the full circumstances of the incident in which the French horse Vagabond de la Pomme stumbled very badly prior to the first round of Monday’s competition and the rider
The FEI steward on duty in the warm-up reported the incident to the FEI and also to the FEI chief steward

Penelope Leprevost will face no further action over her riding of Vagabond de la Pomme in the Gothenburg warm-up
A spokesman said the French showjumper has been “spoken to” about the collecting ring incident
which was caught on film during the Longines FEI World Cup final last month (28 March)
Horse & Hound reported that the rider was seen catching Vagabond de la Pomme hard in the mouth after he stumbled while trotting on a long rein
The FEI said at the time that Penelope had “reacted very roughly”
while the rider later issued a public apology on social media
admitting she had “over-reacted” and “was too strong”
But an FEI statement issued on Friday (22 April) read: “The FEI has investigated the full circumstances of the incident with Penelope LePrevost and her horse Vagabond de la Pomme in the warm-up arena at Gothenburg
who had been briefed about the incident by the steward on duty at the time
“Penelope Leprevost has stated publicly that she regrets her actions and expressed her remorse for over-reacting in the heat of the moment
Vagabond de la Pomme was given a thorough check-over in the stables by the French team vet Jérôme Thévenot who reported that the horse was fit to compete
“The FEI is assured that such an incident will not occur again and

Penelope’s statement of 30 March read: “My horse was trotting
My goal was to wake him up but not to push him too hard…
