The breeze begins at 9am on Wednesday | Scoop Dyga
The wraps come off the European breeze-up season on Wednesday at Osarus's La Teste de Buch fixture
A catalogue of just 37 lots – down by more than 50% on last year's entries – has been reduced further by four withdrawals
and the sale is heavily supported by a draft of 14 from John Bourke's Hyde Park Stud
This more gentle introduction to the 2025 round of two-year-old sales is in a sense the calm before the storm
around 160 Craven horses will be having a practice breeze on Newmarket's Rowley Mile before the real thing on Monday morning
Four straight weeks of breeze-up action at Tattersalls
Goffs UK and Arqana will set the tone for bloodstock sales more generally amid some Trump-inspired instability in the global financial markets
Colm Kennedy of Drumphea Stables in Co Carlow has joined Bourke on the pilgrimage to south-west France and will be consigning at Osarus for the first time this week
and it's a great setting with really good yards,” said Kennedy as he prepared to send out his team of three for the practice breeze on Tuesday afternoon
who has three members of his first crop entered in Saturday's G3 Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury and was himself an Osarus graduate
before becoming a Bansha House breezer at Ascot
We didn't actually enter him anywhere else as we didn't know where we'd get in
but the sire is going a very good job,” Kennedy said
“Con Marnane bought Sands Of Mali here so you would imagine he might be popular here.”
We've a nice Profitable filly and a Soldier's Call filly
They're three nice horses and they're all rock-and-rolling two-year-old types
though the Sands Of Mali should improve as he's a big horse – he's probably 16 hands and a good
Kennedy was not alone in finding it tougher to claim sales slots for his breezers in recent seasons and said that he has adjusted his operation accordingly
we've one going to the Guineas and one going to Fairyhouse,” he noted
I couldn't get horses in the sales the last few years
even ones we'd paid a good few quid for.”
optimistic for the season ahead despite the general uncertainty prompted by the instigation of President Trump's tariffs on the EU and UK
“A lot of wealthy people would have got stung yesterday on the stock markets but people will always buy horses; there's always an appetite for horses,” he said
Graduates of last year's sale include Make You Mine (Ire) (Circus Maximus {Ire})
who was sold by Mickey Cleere of MC Thoroughbreds for €18,000 and won first time out at Cagnes-sur-Mer in February
she was trained by Manon Scandella-Lacaille but has subsequently left France to join Chad Brown's stable in America
Cleere is selling a filly by Awtaad (Ire) (lot 10) and a colt by Cotai Glory (GB) (lot 8)
Horses for the Osarus sale breeze on the turf track at La Teste de Buch at 9am on Wednesday
and the sale gets underway from 1pm local time

Six months after the fire that ravaged hundreds of hectares of pine trees in the Arcachon basin near Bordeaux
While scientists are calling for the defense of this unique heritage in France
By Claire Mayer (Bordeaux (France) correspondent)
BRIAN REYNAUD POUR M LE MAGAZINE DU MONDE On this road that leads to the ocean
The Dune du Pilat stands before the astonished eyes of those who drive along the RD218 once more
The road that connects the Nouvelle-Aquitaine's most visited site in southwestern France (welcoming 2 million visitors per year) and the seaside town of Biscarrosse was reopened on December 17
this summer almost everything burned in the fires that ravaged the precious common property of the Arcachon basin: its pine forest
"You see the serious faces of those who return," said Patrick Davet
while greeting his constituents on the roadside
while looking sadly at this devastated forest that has lived alongside forever
"But the madrones and the ferns are already growing back," he continued
a few green shoots did indeed brighten it up a bit
with damaged trunks but with green at the top
reminded us that nature is trying to regain its rights
The clearing of dead and living wood is non-stop in this forest that is partly owned by the state and partly by another group with more than 300 private owners
has a special status based on a system that is unique in France today
known as "baillettes et transactions." It is a type of civil contract

France: Hargan (Al MamunMonlau x Mkeefa) carried the colours of his owner H H Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa AlThani to an easy success in the French Arabian Breeders Challenge – Poulains
a Group 2 for three-year-old Purebred Arabian colts and geldings
The black colt is trained by François Rohaut and was following up his debut success at the same track in July
Hargan was quickly into stride on leaving the stalls and ran keenly though the opening stages of the 2,000m contest
Al Muwaiji (Majd Al Arab) moved to the lead after 400m and Hargan took cover behind him
Hargan travelled strongly down the back straight and began to move closer on the home turn
he was the only horse on the bridle and looked to have his opponents held before moving smoothly into the lead 400m out and pulling clear of the field
Despite being eased down in the final strides
Hargan scored by three and a half lengths from stable-mate RB Yas Sir (Sir Bani Yas)
with H H Sheikh Mohammed's Maguroor (Assy) further three and a half lengths back in third under Jean-Bernard Eyquem for trainer Mrs JF Bernard
“Today Hargan was more serious than RB Yas Sir
who is very green and may need blinkers next time out,” said winning trainer François Rohaut after the race
“They both ran well and it means that we now have four very good Arabians in the yard and they may all go to Saint Cloud
Hargan is a very good horse with a lot of size and potential
We look forward to running him next month.”

He had "never" given an animal a jab on a racing day
When investigators turned up at 6 am outside his house next to the Mont-de-Marsan racetrack in the Landes region in southwest French the day before
he found the police raid "completely mad." So

A keeper at La Teste-de-Buch zoo in France savagely beat to death an ostrich with a shovel and then tried to blame a 38-year-old pony
Colleagues of the zookeeper saw him beating the flightless bird over the head several times with a shovel
One employee came forward to say they had witnessed the man beat the bird to death
Other witnesses corroborated this version of events

The unnamed zoo worker denied he had anything to do with beating the giant bird to death and claimed that the pony had given the ostrich a savage kick

H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani’s Amyr Du Soleil (left) on its way to win the Prix Tidjani (Gr3 / PA) at La Teste De Buch
Doha: Qatari colours recorded two black-type victories at La Teste De Buch
on Friday when the Al Shaqab Racing-owned Ryme Al Cham and the H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani-owned Amyr Du Soleil won the Prix Razzia III (Gr 3 / PA) and the Prix Tidjani (Gr3 / PA) respectively
not only came in two classic races over 1,900 metres
which were the very first two events of the nine-race card
but were also associated with the same duo; trainer Thomas Fourcy and jockey Julien Augé
Al Shaqab Racing representatives did not wait for long and demonstrated their class in the Prix Razzia III (Gr 3 / PA)
the opener of the card when the Thomas Fourcy-saddled Ryme Al Cham and Um Taj took home the first and the second places respectively in the race reserved for three-year-old fillies
Ryme Al Cham cantered in last position in the early stages and took a bit of time before finding her action
Once the daughter of Af Albahar managed to accelerate
she came fast on the straight to land the spoils just in front of the Jerome Cabre-ridden Um Taj
The É Dell’Ova-trained and William Smit-ridden Mzoon completed the frame with a further short head behind
With this Gr 3 win at La Teste under her belt in her only second start
Ryme Al Cham has confirmed her class as a very promising prospect
especially as she was the runner-up in her debut when she was defeated by a head by Meethag
H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani’s Amyr Du Soleil claimed the other black-type event of the day immediately in the second race
The duo Fourcy-Augé made it a quick-double fire when the son of Amer brilliantly won the Prix Tidjani (Gr3 / PA) reserved for three-year-old colts
Amyr Du Soleil easily took the advantage at the start of the home straight and made every post a winning one
he kept detaching himself from the rest of the field
the Al Shaqab Racing-owned and the Jerome Cabre-ridden Mounjared Al Cham was three lengths behind and came second
Mounjared Al Cham did so well that he finished further 11 lengths in front of the Guy Dell’ova-owned and É Dell’Ova-trained Guythoum De Carrère who came third under Roberto-Carlos Montenegro
