The 9th international festival of Design – Design Parade 9 takes place the backdrop of Villa Noailles in Hyères on the Côte d’Azur overlooking the bay of Hyères
This year it begins on 4th July and runs until 6th July although the exhibitions remain open until 28th September
The villa was commissioned by the de Noailles family in 1923 to modernist architect Rob Mallet-Stevens
The owners Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles were art collectors and enthusiasts of modernism and sponsored a series of artists and designers who were also responsible for much of the interior design of the house: Salvador Dali
Villa Noailles as it appeared in “Les Mystères du Château du Dé”
The owners were also cinema enthusiasts financing three masterpieces: in 1929
Man Ray’s surrealist film “Les Mystères du Château du Dé”
then in 1930 Jean Cocteau’s first film “Le Sang d’un Poète” and Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali’s second film “L’Âge d’Or”
Villa Noailles as it appeared in “L’Âge d’Or”
The Festival brings together exhibitions and exchanges around an international competition open to young designers
In a manner similar to the Hyères fashion and photography festival
Design Parade furthers the assistance that Villa Noailles provides towards young artists and unites designers
A jury, composed of professionals from design fields (designers, editors, journalists) gather to choose ten young designers. The jury, directed this year by the Dutch duo Scholten & Baijings
will award the winners at the end of the 3 days festival
This year almost 250 applications were sent
The jury came together at Villa Noailles on the 14th of May and chose the 10 designers
The chosen competing designers will show their works in Villa Noailles during a three-month period
They will meet the jury individually during the festival and on Sunday July 6th
the jury will award one designer with the Grand Prix
The competing designers’ collective exhibition in villa Noailles will be open until September 28th 2014
as will the other Design Parade 9 exhibitions:
- 10 competing designers – collective exhibition
- Sèvres - cité de la céramique - gymnasium
- Mathieu Peyroulet-Ghilini - Grand Prix Design Parade 8 winner - new gallery
- Selection of projects by Marie-Claude Beaud
- Laureline Galliot - Conseil Général du Var 2013 award winner - new gallery

- a research scholarship of one year at CIRVA (International Glass and Arts Research Centre) in Marseille
This vase will be produced in triplicate and will then become a part of the permanent collection at the villa Noailles and part of the CIRVA collection
- a grant of 5 000 euros given by Galerie kreo for a personal design project that could be represented by Galerie kreo
- a personal exhibition at the villa Noailles during Design Parade 10
- a personal exhibition in Köln during Passagen
with partnership of the French Institut Köln

A select number of theaters around the world are screening Dunkirk the way Nolan intended
but there are also screenings in non-IMAX 70mm and digital IMAX
There’s a lot of science behind the format
but the peanut-sized explanation is that there is more information on the screen in the full format as opposed to a traditional screen
You can tell the difference at first glance because IMAX 70mm is more vertical than the average widescreen format
So those who are thinking of waiting to watch the movie at home on Netflix are going to seriously miss out
has even released a handy guide to help you tell the difference
So, Where Can I Watch Dunkirk? The film’s official website has an exceptionally user-friendly search engine to look for theaters near you that are screening Dunkirk in 70mm IMAX
and the website will bring up the closest theater to you where you can buy tickets
Alternatively, you can look at the list below, curated by IMAX

The major European exhibitor will introduce IMAX technology into cinemas in France and Switzerland
Pathe and IMAX have signed an agreement that will see the latter install its technologies into five of Les Cinémas Gaumont Pathe’s cinemas
IMAX’s laser project technology will be added to Pathe Cinema Gaumont in Montpellier
and also in a new complex to be located in La Valette-du-Var in Southeast France
The deal makes Pathe the first exhibitor to bring IMAX’s laser technology to French cinemas
IMAX digital theatre systems will also be added in three locations in Switzerland: the Mall of Switzerland in Ebikon
the Tivoli Mall in Spreitenbach and the forthcoming Alpine Hub in Riddes
The agreement takes Pathe’s IMAX commitment to 17 theatres
also including locations in the Netherlands
“The performance of our IMAX sites in France has been convincing and today’s agreement is a direct result of this and the success of our entire IMAX network,” said Martine Odillard

Descendants of the Grand Master who commissioned the building of Valletta are insisting that his name is consistently being misspelt
he never once called himself and nobody referred to him as de la Valette- Giovanni Bonello
Désireé von la Valette Saint Georges insisted the family of Jean Parisot has always carried the name as “de la Valette”
The Grand Master himself was brought up in La Valette du Var
A French nobleman and Grand Master of the Order of Malta from 1557 to 1568
the Knight Hospitaller fought with distinction against the Turks in Rhodes and as Grand Master commanded the resistance against the Ottomans at the Great Siege of Malta in 1565
He went on to commission the construction of the new city of Valletta in 1566
The controversy of the correct spelling of the 49th Grand Master of the Order of Malta was brought up again last week
during the unveiling of a 2.5-metre statue of the Knight Hospitaller in Valletta
former European Court of Human Rights judge and researcher Giovanni Bonello sought to settle the matter once and for all
He stressed the name was Jean De Valette and not “De La Valette” as he was commonly referred to in error
When contacted yesterday Dr Bonello invited “anyone to find one single reference during the Grand Master’s lifetime when he referred to himself
It’s very easy to prove me wrong – just find one instance
he never once called himself and nobody referred to him as la Valette whatever language was used
reference in contemporary history books or archives when he was alive in which he is referred to as ‘De la Valette’ or as ‘La Valette’
All serious historians refer to him as de Valette,” he stressed
But his descendants have always referred to their “family hero” as Jean Parisot de la Valette
who told The Times that she was one of the descendants of the Grand Master
Ms von la Valette and her niece Nastassja were present for the unveiling of the bronze-silicon statue of the man who started a new chapter in Malta’s history
The effigy stands tall in the new Pjazza de Valette
a few metres away from where he had laid the foundation stone in 1566
The Grand Master did not live to see the completion of the city that adopted his name but his descendants are enchanted by the walled citadel
been brought up surrounded with documents and maps of the city
but to be here and experience it in person..
it keeps impressing me no matter how many times I visit the island
“It’s a million times better than the maps and I keep marvelling at the resilience of our ancestors,” Ms von la Valette
She was brought up in a 14th-century castle called Schloss Auel
where the family has documents about the Great Siege against the Ottomans and a family tree
The castle served as a hospital for the French during World War II and an elderly care home afterwards
it is a boutique hotel and one of Ms von la Valette’s sisters
“Every la Valette in existence” will be visiting Malta next year
as around 15 family members will head to the island to celebrate Tatiana’s 50th birthday
Ms von la Valette speaks of the Grand Master as “a hero” who joined the Order at 20
He was strict and the only time he uttered “words of discouragement” was when one of his nephews
“He was strict with himself and the Order’s brothers – adhering to the rules himself while reinforcing them – and he was not popular for that,” she adds
Ms von la Valette’s interest in her ancestor has also led her to the Louvre in Paris
where she saw “La Valette’s dagger”
she hoped it could be returned to the island
Her interest drew her to visit in 1995 and she describes Valletta as “not only physically beautifully but incredibly restored”
She remains fascinated by the “warm light that magnifies the colours of the limestone.”
Ms von la Valette is on a mission to preserve her family’s heritage
The ancestral mansion where the Grand Master was brought up remains almost forgotten in La Valette du Var
but the memory of her family hero is alive in the city that carries his name
