2015 10:37 AM ESTFrench authorities on Wednesday shut down its third mosque in less than two weeks for contributing to a “pattern of radicalization,” Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said
The most recent closure of a mosque east of Paris came during an ongoing state of emergency. Authorities arrested a mosque leader who owned a revolver found in related raids after the deadly Nov. 13 attacks on the capital, Cazeneuve said in a statement
Two other mosques were shuttered last week after authorities say they found signs of support for “Islamist radicalization,” including jihadist documents
Nine people were placed under house arrest and 22 others were banned from leaving the country
The Interior Minister also said French police have conducted 2,235 searches
made 263 other arrests and seized 334 weapons since Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria’s (ISIS) attack on Paris
France is under a state of emergency until February
Authorities are still on the hunt for Salah Abdeslam
who is suspected of being involved in the assaults
“This is the terrorism that threatens liberties today,” Cazeneuve said

Our French readership apart – hello France – if you’ve heard of Lagny-sur-Marne in a footballing sense
it’s most likely in reference to Paul Pogba
and often credits the skills he learnt on its streets as having been vital to his success
But he’s not the only player to have been produced by the historic district 16 miles east of central Paris
the highly rated 22-year-old midfielder now on his way from PSG to RB Leipzig
and his career so far echoes that of the Manchester United superstar in a couple of ways
he’s made the decision to leave Paris Saint-Germain
in the hope of having his talent recognised with significant first-team appearances elsewhere
both literally on the pitch as he bursts forward from midfield
he couldn’t have been more at home during our photoshoot
transitioning from pose to pose like a Paris Fashion Week regular
“who will be confident for you?” Quite right too
After giving ourselves a mental pat on the back for encouragement
to find out where exactly his self-confidence comes from
and how Thiago Motta improved his game in one simple step
What made you interested in football when you were younger
I was interested in sport in general and sports practised by all my family
I saw my big brother playing football – I went to see him play
Sometimes my big brother helped me to practise
I was going out with them without thinking about anything else
you start to feel what being a “team” means
You learn how to give yourself completely for the team
Then eventually you fight for a city like Paris
What does it take for a kid who plays football for fun to reach the PSG academy
I think there’s a moment when you realise you stand out
Every time people say “You played very well” or “Did you see the move you made?”
Then people come to see you and chat with your family saying “Your son is a good player”
Then they want to take your contact details
and they say the name of the club they represent
You see that it’s starting to be serious because those are clubs you see on your TV screen
Clubs like PSG show up and now it's getting really serious
Would you say that PSG is like your second home
Then what’s rewarding is when you sign your pro contract there and you play there
When did it hit you that you weren’t someone who just played with their friends in the street anymore
Because that’s when you really start to be in an institution and spend your time in that kind of environment
You go to school and then you go to training
went to training by myself and came back home
at the training centre you already see this obsession for victory
it was said: “You have to win the French championship”
Does it make you feel pressure when you step on the pitch
you’re so focused that you forget about it
like thinking about tactical and technical instructions
How does it feel to play in the Parc des Princes
You’ve dreamt about football since you were young – do you feel you achieved your dream or is it just a job like any other
of course it’s a dream when you’re picked to be part of the squad and go to the stadium
Is there any rivalry in terms of competition for places in the squad
Do you tell yourself that since not everybody will be selected
because I believe when you wish bad luck on people
Did you achieve one of your goals by becoming a pro
which is one of the biggest clubs in Europe
I’ve already played in the UEFA Champions League
Some people have a great career but never get the opportunity to play in the Champions League
Some people have a career but never win titles
It’s true that I didn’t play 100 percent of all the matches
but I’ve lived through all those experiences
PSG have been involved in lots of new projects
especially in terms of fashion and the partnership with Jordan
Seeing things like the Jordan collaboration
when you’re young and you put Jordan on your feet
it makes you realise that the club is getting bigger and bigger
Do you feel the support of the fans around the city
I always see someone wearing something linked with PSG
But some people recognise me and leave me alone because they don’t want to disturb me and know I’m enjoying my time out
Others come to see me and ask me to take pictures
so I take pictures with them and then I keep doing my thing
Are you influenced by big fashion stars or any of your teammates who also like to be fashionable
fashion is something you first see on someone
there might be someone who has pants or a jacket or shoes that are similar to mine
Recently adidas have collaborated with famous musicians like Pharrell
What do you think about a big sport brand like adidas being interested in different kinds of celebrities
You can sense the difference in their music
You can see it in the beautiful products they make
Beyonce and Pharrell – that attracts people
Would you be interested in collaborating with a brand like adidas
You seem pretty confident for your young age
You don’t hesitate to speak when something is going wrong
Do you think it’s important for an athlete to be confident and ready to face adversity
It’s true that you need to be self-confident
How do you manage to stay calm and focused
There have been ups and downs this year – how did you overcome those difficulties
How does it feel to be on the pitch with so many famous players
I became a pro and suddenly I saw Ibrahimovic
if I misplace a pass and then the opposition scores
Who comes to mind when you think of players who helped you to improve your skills and to be a better player today
I was taking lots of unnecessary touches on the ball
And he doesn’t like that because you already know how his play is
and this understanding we also have off the pitch
So he really helped you to simplify your way of playing
who talk to you a lot in the changing room
You’ve been in a changing room with players who have strong personalities
Does it help when you’re with players who speak up when something’s wrong
who support the team and keep everyone engaged
I like people who get straight to the point
It doesn’t mean that at the end of the training he won’t laugh with you
On the pitch we can even insult each other
Did that have an influence on your goals with the national team
We saw that when we celebrated the victory
what do you expect from this new season and what would you like to achieve
I’d like to play on a regular basis and feel that I had a good and complete season

the narrow window of opportunity for any young player to really make their name
The six strings have dominated the city’s music scene for so long that any budding artist from the area could be forgiven for thinking that an ability to knock out a few chords was part of the entrance exam
True humility is a rare commodity in football

The latter lost his place to the young Frenchman

Looking at WhoScored once again

Pogba averaging 2.3 to Marchisio’s 2.2 per game
The latter held the edge in interceptions—1.4 per appearance to 1.0—whilst passing more accurately to complete 86.7 per cent to Pogba’s 83.8
Marchisio is able to carry the load in the present despite his team-mate possessing a much higher ceiling in the future

Having the money from a potential Pogba sale would allow the Bianconeri to contest for the signature of these players more keenly

Christopher Nkunku was born in Lagny-sur-Marne, an eastern suburb in Paris, the same area where Paul Pogba was born and brought up. Nkunku was an incredibly gifted and robust player with a “footballer’s DNA” from a young age and joined France’s renowned national academy, Clairefontaine, alongside the talent of Marcus Thuram, Allan Saint-Maximin, Amine Harit and a year before a certain Kylian Mbappé.
He joined the PSG junior side in 2010 at the tender age of 13 and made his full Ligue 1 debut in 2015 under Laurent Blanc. His minutes kept increasing steadily season on season but so did the Hollywood superstar signings. Most of these minutes came as a “mezzala” in a 3-man midfield.
Nkunku even made 22 Ligue 1 appearances in what would be his final season at Paris Saint-Germain in 2018-19. However, he was never particularly prolific with only 3 goals and 2 assists in that season being his best tally.
Photo: Nkunku’s 2018/19 Ligue 1 heat map [SofaScore]
Speaking to the media at PSG, he said “I’ve been told that I need to work on my killer instinct, because I sometimes don’t try my luck or I might miss the odd chance. This is important. I aim to work on this because attacking players must be decisive.”
However, in 2019 with his contract soon running down, he had to decide whether he wanted to develop his talents elsewhere or in the French capital. The then PSG manager, Thomas Tuchel leaned on buying superstars rather than letting academy talent flourish.
The likes of Julian Draxler were kept and midfield reinforcements in Ander Herrera and Idrissa Gueye arrived. He was close to joining Arsenal but the deal fell through because of club negotiations.
And so, Nkunku along with Moussa Diaby (Bayer Leverkusen) headed to the Bundesliga, a hotspot for the best young talent. The Red Bull project was one of the best he could’ve joined developing players like Sadio Mané, Joshua Kimmich, Timo Werner and later Erling Haaland.
Nkunku’s first season in Saxony was also the first of German manager Julian Nagelsmann, who had arrived after a promising spell at Hoffenheim. In his first season, Nkunku caught the eye of many taking to the Bundesliga like a duck to water. He played most of his minutes hugging the left side touchline in Nagelsmann’s 3-4-3 and 4-2-2-2.
Photo: Nkunku’s 2019-20 Bundesliga heat map (Sofascore)
He ended up with 5 goals and an astonishing 13 assists in his debut Bundesliga season. For context, only Emil Forsberg had more Bundesliga assists in a debut Bundesliga campaign in 2016-17.
Nkunku said in 2019, “I feel I am blossoming and liberated. Changing clubs was not such a bad idea. Now I can say that it is better to leave your comfort zone to grow taller.”
And grow taller he did. The following season in 20-21, Nkunku started playing a lot more in the half-spaces on both sides in Nagelsmann’s 3-4-2-1, an idea still not seen a lot. There wasn’t too much penalty box involvement however as Nkunku still didn’t possess the predatory goalscoring instincts.
Photo: Nkunku’s 2020/21 heat map (Sofascore)
Nagelsmann gave a lot of weight to quick thinking and lightning-fast exchanges following an extended spell of possession, which went away slightly from the Red Bull high-intensity model. This game style suited Nkunku to a tee as it played to his ‘pass and move’ strengths at the time.
Short contact times on the ball were another integral element of Nagelsmann’s 20-21 side. Playing in tight spaces and needing less than a second on the ball, Nkunku’s interplay often left opponents with very less time to adequately respond or counteract the threat.
This can clearly be justified by the sharp increase in all the passing and short passing metrics between 2019-20 and 2020-21.
Even considering Didier Deschamps’ infamous reputation for sticking with the tried and tested for far too long, it was mind-boggling how Nkunku hadn’t received a Les Blues cap then and even now. He was left out of the France roster for the postponed EURO 2020 tournament.
Deschamps hinted that he was close to a call up saying “He’s a player that we’re following. He could have been in there; he is doing interesting things. He’s not here, but he’s one of the serious candidates who can aspire to have this opportunity. I can only encourage him to continue.”
During this time, Nkunku worked with a personal trainer to improve on his already explosive speed and strength but most importantly to become more clinical as a goalscorer ahead of the 21-22 season.
Following Nagelsmann’s departure to Bayern Munich last summer, American manager Jesse Marsch was brought in from Red Bull Salzburg to replace him, and naturally, Leipzig once again had a noticeable switch in style.
Compared to his predecessor, Marsch’s fundamentals involved a return to the original “RB football” and he placed a renewed emphasis on vertical, direct play. Leipzig took the most shots following a high turnover and the number of 10+ pass sequences came down drastically. Marsch initially started with a 4-2-3-1 with Nkunku playing as a natural winger.
Their results stunted as they lost 3 of their first 4 Bundesliga games and got battered by Manchester City 6-3 in the UEFA Champions League. The only positive from the game was Nkunku making sporadic late runs in the box and scoring a hat-trick including two predatory close-range finishes.
This was a precursor to what was coming as it prompted a tactical switch. Marsch reverted to the 3-4-2-1 and deployed Nkunku in the half-spaces, his best position. In this role, he could use his speed to get in behind defences, his passing and technical ability to combine with teammates and utilise his newly acquired finishing skills, some of which he couldn’t do as effectively as a 10 or an out-and-out winger.
In the span of just nine days, we can notice a distinct shift in Nkunku’s role. [SofaScore]
It paid immediate dividends as Nkunku got 5 goals in 3 games vs Hertha Berlin, Bochum and Club Brugge. The tactical high press/verticality and this newfound goalscoring prowess meant Marsch wanted Nkunku to receive the ball as high up the field as possible.
However, even with the improved eye for goal, Nkunku has not lost any creative edge. He’s had 15 goal-creating actions in the league this season, the fourth-highest in the top 5 leagues. This is backed by the underlying metrics too, with Nkunku’s expected assist (xA) value of 5.8 only topped by Thomas Müller in the league and by Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dimitri Payet and Mohamed Salah in the top 5 leagues.
If his passing and shooting abilities weren’t enough, to add icing to the cake, his dead ball deliveries from corners and freekicks are among the best judging by the eye test and backed up statistically. He is in the top 2 percentile when it comes to shot-creating actions per 90 minutes via dead balls.
Thanks to his technique, the trajectory in his corners often causes confusion in the box and the goalkeepers to hesitate. It is just an added bow to his armour which can be very potent on days when his team is not playing well.
Nkunku’s astonishing 21-22 is reflected when compared with other attacking midfielders and wingers, with the Frenchman in the 90th percentile or better for most key stats, as we can see from his underlying numbers via FBRef.
Despite the individual brilliance of Christopher Nkunku, Leipzig have been hit hard with injuries and underperformance from other key players as well as the departure of key bodies like Dayot Upamecano, Ibrahima Konate and Marcel Sabitzer.
This has led to an inconsistent return of 10 wins, 5 draws and 10 losses across all competitions in the “hinrunde”, a UEFA Champions League group stage exit and the eventual sacking of head coach, Jesse Marsch. Domenico Tedesco was quickly in line to replace Marsch and started with an impressive 4-1 win vs Borussia Mönchengladbach.
He continued with a relatively similar 3-4-1-2, with Nkunku almost playing as a second striker. However, a 2-0 home defeat to relegation-threatened Arminia Bielefeld means Tedesco has his work cut out for the “rückrunde”. With Emil Forsberg out for up to 2 months with a thigh injury, a lot of the creative and indeed goal-scoring burden is going to fall on Nkunku again.
Nkunku has been a vital player in a UEFA Champions League Semi-Final reaching RB Leipzig as well as a bottom half in the Bundesliga RB Leipzig. If his career trajectory continues in this manner and is as good as his aforementioned corner kick trajectories, he is going to be one of the most sought-after attackers very soon.

Paris. The French government on Wednesday banned three religious groups linked to a mosque in the east of Paris that was closed in December for being at the heart of a jihadist recruitment network, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said.
Cazeneuve said the groups tied to the Lagny-sur-Marne mosque, where guns, munitions and jihadist documents were found, had been dissolved because "their leaders over the last few years had incited hatred and called for jihad".
France, which is in a state of emergency, has clamped down on individuals and places of worship - including "organisations cultuelles" - with links to radical Islam since attacks by Islamic State militants in Paris in November that killed 130 people.
"There is no place in the Republic for structures that provoke, call for terrorism and incite hatred," Cazeneuve said.
The mosque's former president, known for radical sermons, fled to Egypt in 2014 with about 10 worshipers. Authorities accuse him of playing a role in the indoctrination and recruitment of volunteers for Syria.
Muslim officials have yet to comment on the ban.
Cazeneuve also said that since the start of 2015 he had proposed that about 30 people be expelled from France for inciting hatred.

Everything you need to know about French superstar Paul Pogba!
Paul Pogba is a French professional football player who currently plays as a central midfielder for Juventus and the France national team. Born on March 15, 1993, in Lagny-sur-Marne, France, Pogba is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world, known for a rare mix of technical ability, range of passing, physicality, ball-winning abilities, and creativity on the pitch.
Pogba began his career at the age of six playing for local club US Roissy-en-Brie. He later joined US Torcy, from where the rough diamond was scouted by Le Havre AC. In 2009, Pogba joined Manchester United's youth academy and quickly made a name for himself as a highly-prodigious talent. He made his first-team debut in 2011 but struggled to establish himself in the squad.
In 2012, Pogba left the northern England club after his contract expired, having only made seven appearances as a substitute. He joined Juventus, who only had to pay £800,000 to secure his services.
At Juventus, he became an integral part of the team, completing a wonderful midfield alongside Juve legends Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Claudio Marchisio. He enjoyed a trophy-laden four-year stint with the Italian giants, helping them win four consecutive Serie A titles and the Coppa Italia twice between 2012 and 2016, as well as reaching the UCL final in 2014/15. Pogba was also named the Serie A Footballer of the Year in 2013 and 2014 and was included in the UEFA Team of the Year in 2015.
His performances were so good that Manchester United -- the very same club that released him -- forked out a then world-record fee of £89 million to prize him away from Turin in 2018. He was 23 and had been named young player of the tournament at the previous World Cup. He was a rising star, the type of player and leader who was expected to pull United out of their post-Alex Ferguson rut.
It all started so positively for Pogba back at Manchester United. In his first season, he played alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic and helped them win the League Cup and the Europa League, while also moving the Red Devils to a second-place league finish and a return to Champions League action.
However, it all turned sour towards the end of his second stint at United. He has also been criticised for his performances, while some fans and pundits have accused him of not living up to his potential and being inconsistent on and off the pitch.
After another underwhelming season in 2021/22, he left Old Trafford at the end of his contract in the summer of 2022 to rejoin Juventus on a free transfer. He has played just twice for the Italian giants since moving to Turin, with his first season back in Italy largely plagued by various injury problems.
For France, he was one of the driving forces of France's 2018 World Cup win, playing a crucial role in the midfield alongside N'Golo Kante. He was once again a key player for France at Euro 2020 and has made 91 appearances for France, scoring 11 goals but he missed the 2022 World Cup through injury.
Here are 15 fun facts about Pogba you need to know!

Weeping willows line the banks of the Marne
a lazy flowing river along which you’ll find a hidden gem of a town in the form of Lagny-sur-Marne
And though the Île-de-France settlement is situated just under 30 km to the East of intra-muros Paris
even many Parisians don’t know of its existence
Here’s a guide to the best things to do in Lagny-sur-Marne
as well as travel tips and things to know before you go
Lagny-sur-Marne is situated in the Île-de-France region
the area of France in which Paris (the French capital is located)
An area roughly eight times the size of greater London
the region is easily the most urbanised area of France
though still boasts plenty of rural countryside
the region is incredibly overlooked when it comes to visitors deciding on where to visit and explore in l’Hexagone
This is such a shame because the region has a wealth of gastronomic
and historical delights to fascinate even the most discerning of traveller.
The ancient town of Lagny-sur-Marne has been inhabited for many centuries and first rose to true prominence during the 7th-century
when the area was chosen to be the site of the Lagny Abbey
The exact date of the founding of the monastery was 644
Though the monastery was destroyed by the Normans
it was re-founded just before the year 1000 CE
The Abbey and its surrounding buildings were seized during the French Revolution and taken for use by the state
the Hotel de Ville is partially constructed from the former cemetery and a plaque next to the main entryway commemorates this
Lagny-sur-Marne (which is referred to in some older guidebooks simply as ‘Lagny’) was pretty popular in Northern France due to the prevalence of tournaments
which were mock fights/ jousts often featuring horses and real weapons
the town has been incorporated administratively into the ‘new town’ of Marne-la-Vallée
For the very best views of Lagny-sur-Marne
I highly recommend strolling along the Rive Droite (ie the Thorigny-sur-Marne side of the river) and soaking up the stunning Provençal vibe of the towns
the water is a turquoise blue and makes for wonderful photos
I personally brought a picnic along with me and loved sitting on a park bench and watching the world go by
all the while admiring the pretty river views
Glowing an ethereal blue in the dappled light of dozens of stained glass windows
one of the main highlights of the town is that of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre
Situated in the very heart of the town on a pretty square and steps away from the Hotel de Ville
the Roman Catholic church has been classed as a National Monument since 1886
Building of the current ecclesiastical building which stands on the site began in the first half of the 12th-century
and so much of the ensuing style is Gothic
One of the main highlights of the church is a plaque which commemorates when Jeanne d’Arc passed through Lagny-sur-Marne and is said to have performed a miracle
whereby she resurrected a child who had been dead for three days
or Jeanne d’Arc as she is known in French
was a vitally important figure to the story of France and travelled all across the country
a plaque commemorates her visits to Lagny-sur-Marne on the side of l’Hotel de Ville which overlooks the church
One of the main tourist attractions of the town is that of the Gatien-Bonnet museum
The cultural hub can be found steps away from the banks of the River Marne and is set against the backdrop of the former home of doctor of medicine Paul d’Halluin
The museum was originally established in a room of the Hotel de Ville in the 19th-century buy Gatien-Bonnet
around which much of the rest of the town is built
the Church of Saint-Fursy is no longer in use as a place of worship but can still be admired for its stunning (if a little dilapidated) Gothic exterior
the church was rebuilt several times before being closed for worship for the final time during the French Revolution
Though the choir and bell tower have since been demolished
much of the building still stands to this day
Due to its small size and chocolate box nature (i.e
the charm in the Frenchs settlement is in its secluded nature and sheer beauty as opposed to the number of activities on offer)
Lagny-sur-Marne can easily be enjoyed over the course of a long and lazy afternoon
The town doesn’t have its own train station
but is instead conveniently located just across the water (the River Marne) from Thorigny-sur-Marne which has its own train stop
with a direct train depating for Paris every half an hour or so during the daytime
From Paris, you’ll need to take the Line P towards Meaux
The journey takes just 23 minutes and though the countryside between the two destinations isn’t particularly interesting
the train travel time goes by faster than you can say “voilà”
it’s a five minute stroll over the D221 bridge to the Rive Gauche and you’ll arrive immediately in Lagny-sur-Marne
the tourism office is situated on the banks of the river and has a wealth of information on activities and things to do in the surrounding area
as well as brochures documenting a comprehensive history of the town (in French
