The project aims to support small concert halls and indie musicians across the country and introduce various music genres to the public. Running for about two months from August to October 2025, LaLaon will be held every Monday to Thursday in the Seoul area and Friday to Sunday outside the metropolitan area. In the case of the performance, each team performs 25 minutes, and three to four teams will be on stage per performance. A total of 150 teams will participate in 50 performance venues nationwide. The qualification for the venue recruitment is a small concert hall with less than 200 seats, which usually plans and conducts popular music performances, and a total of 50 venues across the country, including local regions, will be selected to provide differential rental fees. The qualification for recruiting musicians is limited to individuals or teams with Korean nationality who can release at least five songs and perform live for at least 20 minutes. A total of around 150 teams will be selected to provide performance opportunities along with performance fees. Last year's "La Laon" was held in success at various small venues across the country, including Rolling Hall and Prism Hall in Seoul, Club Knock in Incheon, Interplay in Daejeon, Art Hall Agogo in Suncheon, Club Heavy in Daegu, Obangard in Busan, and Eidhi Hall in Jeju Island. In addition, artists active in indie scenes such as Far East Asian Tigers, The Vane, Lacuna, Broken Valentine, Yeonjung, and Crackshot appeared to successfully end the performance, drawing keen attention and response from the audience. Concert halls and musicians who want to participate can fill out the application form from April 23 to May 18, 2025, at 6 p.m., and submit it to the Korea Music Label Industry Association's e-mail with relevant evidence. The selection results will be announced in June 2025, and more details will be available on the association's official website and SNS. ※ This service is provided by machine translation tool, NAVER papago. the many poems she writes the Seoul-based illustrator sources ideas for her work in metaphors and rhymes illustrator Laon Kim has always loved animals In her drawings Laon Kim likes to draw situations that are contrary to her existence her drawing of animals is a way to reflect the reality of not having pets “I don’t have time to take care of them because I’m often working,” Laon explains I realise the wish to be with them with my works.” Creating pets within her imagination leaves Laon leeway to imagine them in spectacular and fantastical ways The animals often tower above humans and find themselves in absurd unlikely places; in one particularly surreal piece a large white bunny leaps underwater over a submarine distinguishing attributes of the animals are repurposed entirely In Weird pen to paper in more ways than one Laon’s often sources inspiration from the massive number of poems she writes Between 2018 and 2019 Laon tells us that she had a particularly fruitful period Laon explains that she chose poetry because it was the easiest and most convenient way to record her many imaginings: “I only needed a cell phone without any special ingredients or plans.” It was in 2020 and wanting to express herself in more ways than one that Laon began to wonder how she could utilise her massive memo pad of drawings “I moved my first poetic pictures of the big dachshund table bat chandelier and cotton candy airtrail to the screen and I naturally started creating surreal drawings,” she tells It’s Nice That Laon’s experience with literature and visualising its words has come in handy with a number of her commissions In 2021 Laon worked with the publication ARKO (Arts Council Korea) illustrating a number of their webzines featuring contemporary literature “Because the metaphor contained in the poem or novel itself was interesting I tried to visualise the text as it was,” Laon explains I imagined and directed specific situations as if I were building stage sets.” In Heart Before Summer Laon visualises a story about feelings of “lost love” Taking the core message of the story and visually telling a story with it Laon chose to depict a plane to represent “transporting between meeting and parting” and the empty winter coat that sits next the the subject to “imply the memory of the past or a beloved one” While Laon loves commercial work for the charm of its “clarity and the fun that time limitations bring” recently she’s found herself desiring something a bit more “free” In the near future she’s looking to produce her own picture book as inspired by one of the many tangents her brain has taken her on; specifically a recent need to explore the subtle relationships between people as compared to the Korean children’s game “drop-the-handkerchief” The fastest that USA Swimming has on record is the 1:48.21 produced by American Maximus Williamson at the 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Championships last summer To further drive home the magnitude of Kim’s swim he would’ve won the 16-18 (1:49.96 winning time) and 19 & over (1:49.64 winning time) age groups on Sunday in Toronto Over the last month or so, Kim has been training with the University of Calgary Swim Club (UCSC) after he opted to change training bases from Hyack, where he’s been brought up, to experiment with a bigger environment prior to next season He has made no long-term commitments regarding where he’ll train next year but it’s clear things have been working out in Calgary Kim also picked up individual golds in the 50 free (23.01) while his splits played crucial roles in the UCSC boys breaking NAG records in both the 400 and 800 free relays Kim’s time in the 100 free made him the fastest 15-year-old in Canadian history having already held that distinction after his swim at Mel Zajac I think they should just add him.Having trials in early spring to determine a junior team to compete in late October is a bad idea.Allow yourself the ability to add at your world junior team He has improved a lot since Canadian trials (March) and I don’t think was the top junior there (despite winning the junior final in 400fr/IM; Lorne Wigginton was faster in the open final in both) https://www.swimrankings.net/index.php?page=meetDetail&meetId=637118&clubId=66140 I think he swam way too many events in trial not like other swimmers This initiative for selected Association of the Cathedral of Our Lady and the Church of Saint Martin we agreed on a date during my travels in France to visit Laon and gain access to the Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Chapel in Laon Cathedral pointing out other significant monuments within the old medieval walls served as a major hub of intellectual innovation offering salvation and protection to any ecclesiastical official who chose to study with the Canons of the Church Claude brought me to his panoramic favorite view of the Cathedral Once in front of the immense façade of Laon Cathedral Claude and I admired the ever-watching oxen decorating the bell towers of the cathedral we went directly to the Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Chapel the central component of my thesis research Claude provided me with ample light as I photographed the space and observed the sculptural relief inside This relief contains an exceptional combination of iconographies: a Eucharistic Man of Sorrows and Saint Elizabeth of Hungary with kneeling canons This assemblage of images and their iconographic significance is one of the keys in understanding the motivations for the patronage of this chapel by the fourteenth century medieval woman And while the space is (sadly) used for storage today visiting and engaging in the space allowed me to take part in an esteemed and unforgettable hands-on research experience I was able to gain many important images for use in my impending thesis Claude gave me a private tour of Laon Cathedral where I gained access to private spaces with in the church Claude took me around the cathedral and spoke about the stained glass and the connections to the canons we climbed up to the gallery level–first to see the massive organ and then around one side of the Interior where they keep some of the original statuary where there is an original wall painting from the twelfth century and we walked through the cloister (which was unforgettable!) He ended the tour by showing us his favorite part of the cathedral which was the baptismal font Traveling to the sleepy medieval town of Laon allowed me to experience the medieval space central to my thesis research I left the town feeling more connected to my research and energized to continue my writing.” Copyright © University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and University of Wisconsin Board of Regents. Last weekend, Canadian 14-year old Laon Kim broke a record that has stood for more than 43 years in Canada and was previously held by one of Canada’s greatest all-time swimmers Kim swam an 8:06.05 in the 800 short course meter free on Friday at the Brad Reid Memorial Invitational. That took more than nine seconds off a 13-14 national record that has stood since April 1, 1979, when Alex Baumann swam an 8:15.14 at the same meet another Canadian Record: a 15:32.15 that still remains as the standard for that age group Baumann’s record was so ahead of its time that for decades it was actually faster than the Ontario Provincial Record in the 800 free relay Baumann was one of the great age groupers in history he owned 38 Canadian Records in swimming and the World Record in the 200 IM He would go on to win Olympic gold medals in the 200 IM and 400 IM at the 1984 Olympic Games He was the Canadian flag-bearer at those Olympic Games Baumann later went on to an accomplished career as a sport administrator including a short stint as the CEO of Swimming Australia for about three months in 2021 Kim’s previous best in the event from February was an 8:27.35 That’s not the only record that Kim has set this fall That broke another old record: a 4:24.89 done by Tobias Oriwol in 2000 Oriwol went on to race at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games At the Odlum Brown Colleges Cup last weekend he got the age group record in the 100 free (50.48) In addition to his seven short course records in the 13-14 age group he also has a Canadian Record in the 11-12 200 free in SCM Other top performers include Paige Korbely and 100 fly on the girls’ side; Paul Orogo who swept the backstrokes on the boys’ side who won the 200 fly and both IM races for girls Full Meet Replays can be seen on the Hyack Swim Club YouTube Channel: Incredible string of record-setting performances at age 14👏👏 11 strokes per 25m in that 800 must rank up there against the big boys he’ll be on his way to Surrey Knights soon 😂 I believe Janet Evans had NAG records in the 800 that were faster than the 800 FR NAG records But not many teams with four girls going 2:04 or faster back in the 80s There was no shortage of motoring events taking place in the UK over the long Jubilee weekend but for those who wanted to escape the wind and rain there was something altogether more enticing on offer 150 miles south of Calais: the Laon Historic This year was the 31st running of this annual event which saw more than 800 classics converge on this picturesque town at the centre of which is a spectacular 12th century cathedral the focus of the entries has gradually shifted ever further from older classics A decade ago you couldn’t move for fifties and sixties home-grown machinery such as Panhards Nowadays the entry list still features some oddities; just some of those taking part this year included a Renault 4-based LM a glorious Toyota Century and a Volkswagen Golf Mk2 Country If you’re thinking that 150 miles into France is a long way to go just for a classic car rally try not to think of it as a UK-style event that just happened to be on the other side of The Channel Not only was the journey every bit as enjoyable as the destination and the streets of Laon – plus it was all brilliantly organised too The format of the weekend was pretty simple On the Saturday there was a drive out into the countryside surrounding Laon then on the Sunday there were static displays of the cars taking part in the new town (at the bottom of the hill) and the old town (at the top) Once everyone had enjoyed a good gawp at the hundreds of cars and motorbikes the streets were closed and a circuit created for a couple of hours of driving Could you imagine an 850-strong drive-out in the UK on single-track roads with roadworks bringing entire counties to a halt You’d have indignant cyclists riding three abreast and the locals would be writing angry letters to the local newspaper to complain about how inconvenient it all is But in France the locals embrace the Laon Historic Many of them turned up in their classics and those who didn’t lined the streets to cheer on those taking part The 800 or so cars taking part in Saturday’s drive out were split into two main groups (A and B); those with a really old classic got a shorter third route Everyone set off from Laon for a 50-mile drive to Saint Quentin An added bonus was 30-degree heat and blazing sunshine After a couple of hours of lazing in the park in Saint Quentin poring over the classics parked up in the street The afternoon run was another 50-mile drive with groups A and B switching round so that everyone did the same route but half of the entrants did it in the opposite direction to the others Japanese classics were a focus at this year’s Laon Historic with the Mazda MX-5 and Nissan Figaro clubs taking pride of place outnumbered by large numbers of all four generations of MX-5 At the lunch stop in Saint Quentin I caught up with Claire and Peter Taylor who had driven their Figaro from Dusseldorf Claire told us: “We’re members of the UK club which alerted us to the event taking place Quite a few other members have come from Germany too We bought our Figaro seven years ago and it’s good to try new things with it The club was invited to take part and it’s been a great experience to do something that so many of our friends are also taking part in The club element has made it so much better so it’s great that owners’ groups can get involved en masse.” Laon’s town square soon filled up for the static displays; regular attendees know that by 9am the prime slots in front of the town hall have all gone so there’s fierce competition to bag a space early while those who fancy a lie-in just park up in the new town at the bottom of the hill then look on from a nearby café while the lines of classics are viewed and photographed for a few hours Jon and Angela Munn brought their children Freja and Felix from Sussex; they came in their 1995 MX-5 California that Jon bought new and a mint low-mileage Mercedes CLK 320 that joined the family five years ago Angela described the appeal: “We’re in the MX-5 Owners’ Club which told us that the Laon Historic was featuring Japanese cars this year With ours recently restored we reckoned that it was the perfect opportunity to try something new It was a good decision because it’s been great fun with lots of really friendly people but we’ve got to know quite a few enthusiasts who have been great to talk to.” the roads were closed and a circuit was created for the rest of the afternoon with entrants able to whizz up the hill on the one side through the cobbled streets of the old town before heading through the new town along the bottom In previous years the locals have turned out in droves in a bid to bag lifts from those taking part either because of occasional showers or Covid Mike and Barbara Culley drove their 2011 Ferrari California from South Wales Mike said: “We’ve loved every minute of it because it’s so different from anything we’ve done before We’ve met so many lovely people and seen such a huge variety of vehicles taking in lots of beautiful villages and empty roads and also seeing some of the battlefields from the First World War.” Save my name and email in this browser for the next time I comment Tuesday World Subscribers only Trump-Carney meeting: Canada seeks reconciliation World Subscribers only Friedrich Merz Fauré and based on a tragedy by Alexandre Dumas (the father of the famous writer) himself a native of the Hauts-de-France region marches and choruses (from Heures Guerrières and Heures Heureuses to César a Fermé la Paupière) Mikko Franck's baton meticulously coordinated the numbers that recount the tragic episode of Caligula's murder punctuated by the purity of children's voices You have 59.1% Canadian Age Records while both Ella Jansen and Camryn Kannings both picked up more individual golds on day 2 of the 2022 Ontario Junior International First he swam 2:00.57 in the 200 fly for a 5th-place finish. That broke his own record of 2:00.93 set in early November in Vancouver. That race was won by Reuben Rowbotham-Keating from Great Britain in 1:57.45 after he was the runner-up in the 100 fly on Friday Kim’s next record-breaking swim came in the 50 free final, where he swam 22.61. That swim, along with a prelims 22.89, shattered the old record held by Olympian Javier Acevedo That’s the first of Kim’s records so far this week that as previously held by someone else and gives him all of the freestyle records except for legendary swimmer Alex Baumann’s 1979 record in the 1500 free Kim would just miss that record on Sunday by .74 seconds The 50 free was won by 18-year-old Ramac swimmer Eric Ginzburg in 22.47 That took over a second of his previous best time of 23.53 done in July Ginzburg represented Canada internationally at the 2022 Junior Pan Pac Championships where he finished 11th Kim’s final record of Saturday came in the session-ending 400 free relay where he split 50.30 leading off Hyack’s 8th-place effort That broke his own record of 50.48 from 2022 Kim breaking the records in the 50 and 100 freestyles is a natural extension of his results on Friday where he showed dramatically-improved opening speed in the 800 free On the girls’ side of the pool, two of the stars from Friday picked up additional individual wins on Saturday. Etobicoke’s Ella Jansen won the 400 free in dominant fashion touching in 4:02.69: five seconds ahead of the field She also won the 200 free and 400 IM on Friday Etobicoke is the same club that produced Canada’s top young star who has a similar event specialty as Jansen among many other Canadian swim stars throughout history In the women’s 50 fly, 16-year old Kamryn Cannings from the University of Calgary Swim Club also picked up her 3rd win of the meet That knocks six-tenths of a second off her previous best time and makes her the second-fastest Canadian 16-year-old ever in the event behind only Noemie Thomas (25.60) Cannings beat out British peer Eva Okaro in the 50 fly who disrupted Cannings’ butterfly sweep of the meet Baillie finished in 2:10.17 to win the race but Baillie and Cannings both roared home to take the top two positions in closing splits of 33.50 and 33.87 The swimmers from Britain..are they highly rated in Britain, maybe a national junior team The cropped headline podium photo suggests he would tower over the gold medallist on flat ground August 12th, 2022 Canada, News, Previews & Recaps The pool portion of the 2022 Canada Games came to an end on Thursday with the final 15 gold medals handed out at the Eleanor Misener Aquatics Centre Para swimmers and special Olympians are competing at this six-day competition which ends on Friday with open water races at the Welland International Flatwater Centre The final night of competition also saw 14-year-old Laon Kim of British Columbia near the boys’ 13-14 Canadian National Record in the 50 freestyle as Kim won the event in a blistering time of 24.04 That swim was just .01 shy of his lifetime best set at the Canadian Championships in late July and .07 back of the NAG record of 23.97 set by Scarborough Swim Club’s Kurtis Miller way back in 2000 Kim represents the Hyack Swim Club in club swimming Timothé Barbeau on his race: “Knowing that from the beginning of the race I was first Barbeau on winning with his teammate: “I’m happy for him and he’s happy for me.” Sebastian Gonzalez Barboza on being on the top of the podium with his teammate: “Finishing 1-2 Québec is the best thing that could happen.” Rebecca McGrath on winning: “It’s great winning a medal at Canada Games Connor Bissett on winning his fifth gold medal: “I’m very proud.” Bailey O’Regan on her experience at Canada Games: “I didn’t know what to expect going into it but it has definitely exceeded all expectations.” Julie Brousseau: “It’s been a pretty long meet but it’s really exciting getting to medal and being on the podium Katie Cosgriffe on her experience at the games: “The atmosphere of being with a team and supporting each other through all the races is something that I will carry with me for the rest of life.” March 31st, 2023 Canada, International, News During the junior final of the men’s 100 free at the 2023 Canadian Swimming trials, 14-year-old Laon Kim clocked a time of 51.05 to finish third in his heat and break the Canadian 13-14 age group record in the event He takes off over half a second from his previous record of 51.75 Kim was also just 0.06 seconds off of Chris Weeks’ time of 50.97 that had won the junior year Kim went out in a time of 24.38 before closing in 26.67 posing the fastest opening 50 of the field and the third-fastest back half The splits for his previous Canadian age record were 24.95/26.80 showing that he has developed to take out his races substantially faster who eventually turned out to be senior team stars This kid range and excellence is incredible Although Yanyan wasn't the greatest competitive swimmer she learned more about the sport of swimming by being her high school swim team's manager for four years She eventually ventured into the realm of writing and joined SwimSwam in January 2022 where she hopes to contribute to and learn more about … More from Yanyan LiSee All Subscribe to our newsletter and receive our latest updates! © 2025 Swim Swam Partners, LLC. As parts of the church were being reconstructed, the decision was made to update a lot of the old equipment. Over time, full-duplex communication among staff and a system capable of handling many wireless beltpack connections had become necessary. The new solution in use at Yongin Leading Church is built around a LaON Technology Genie BS1000 solution, the company’s flagship product. This was specified following an extensive site survey detailing coverage requirements, antenna positions and wireless frequency coordination and was the most appropriate solution given the church’s huge campus size. “There were 5GHz wireless video signals being used by a cameramen,” recalled LaON’s Miyoun Park. “We have checked the signal and coordinated for the best RF channel for our antennas to avoid interreference from those video signals. With a number of other 5GHz devices creating congestion, the LaON system allows users to change the RF channel for the antennas or set up automatic RF scanning with the GCM program. “The church is very much satisfied with the audio quality and ease of operation, and particularly likes the beltpack button lock function and the fact that a beltpack-only communication system can be constructed without a base station if necessary,” added Park. As they also host many smaller events, they only have to bring along the beltpacks for those purposes.” WhatsApp NAB moves 2021 show to October Overview Q-Sys heads for the connected meeting space with two new Cores You may also like: By using our website, you agree to our use of cookies. Sadalberga became a nun in a monastery in Poulangey. + Near the end of her life, Sadalberga helped establish a new community near Laon, where she served as abbess. + Saint Sadalberga died sometime around the year 665 and was honored as a saint immediately after her death. + Saint Bodo, the brother of Saint Sadalberga, became bishop of Toul and founded a number of monasteries. Both Bodo and Sadalberga are honored as saints of the Benedictine Order, although it is likely that the monasteries they were associated with only adopted the Rule of St. Benedict in the centuries after the deaths of these saints. “I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.”—Romans 12:1-2 (from The Roman Missal: Common of Holy Men and Women—For a Holy Woman) Saint profiles prepared by Brother Silas Henderson, S.D.S. carnival of vandalism and homicide Witnesses describe a world turned upside down Merchants murdered the local bishop and set fire to the town’s cathedral Priests hid in sewers. Men dressed as women and women as men in order to escape the mob Mothers and daughters pulled carts loaded with dead husbands and fathers An abbot at a nearby monastery placed ultimate blame on the town’s most powerful citizen an Englishman named Waldric (previously Lord Chancellor of England under Henry I but known as “Gaudry” to his French subjects) The bishop of Laon for the previous six years Gaudry had bought his bishopric with political favors even before he was ordained a priest he had devoted himself to managing business interests abroad had watched as the bishop rode around Laon pretending to be a knight He also suspected that Gaudry had organized a rival’s murder.  In the months leading to the Easter Insurrection the town’s burghers had negotiated a new charter with the bishop unhappy that his powers were being diminished paid the King of France to revoke the new charter Sources agree that the bishop died in the melee that Easter Some say he was slaughtered in the crypt of the cathedral Soon enough the local peasantry joined in the pillaging and violence Although the abbot considered Bishop Gaudry primarily responsible for Laon’s descent into anarchy he had ignored signs that this man was not fit to be a priest The abbot had even joined an embassy to Rome to persuade the pope that Gaudry deserved the bishopric was his failure to read the potential for injustice and violence hidden in plain sight.  But how should we “read” violence – how should we understand its significance Shouldn’t we be trying to interpret its broader meaning as well Philippe Buc has traced how emergent modernity pathologized violent groups Behaviors once explained as religious zeal or divine/demonic possession came to be read as manifestations of insanity or hysteria in the later Middle Ages; the Enlightenment saw them fully pathologized The “madness of crowds” now provides a staple explanation for collective uprisings making the violent acts that accompanied them a defining quality But by treating violence as essentially incoherent we create false equivalencies between all forms of public protest and between those attacked and those attacking.   Medieval observers were as ready as modern audiences to disavow violence; the term “violence” itself was largely avoided unless used to condemn the actions of others But many also saw in violence a challenge to their own abilities to respond to good and evil in the world Violence joined a group of other negatives – such as scandal or heresy – that could be repurposed in order to train and educate a mass uprising might indict an unfit leader who had corrupted his allies lied to his supporters and betrayed his high office vandalism and killing provided momentary ruptures to remind Christian writers like Guibert that humanity lost the right to peace after its expulsion from Eden this absence of peace manifested as political intrigue or sexual cravings should also be embraced as useful reminders outward violence could fit safely in a long narrative of redemption I say within the bounds of history because any prospect of the world’s end point changed the meaning of violence and its potential for containment.  even as Guibert pondered the insurrection at Laon he noted a more portentous mass movement in the Levant when Crusader armies from western Europe conquered Jerusalem and massacred its inhabitants monks who had never been east of Rome began to rethink the course of history they had maintained that the world was not moving toward its end: humanity must endure the present with good and evil intertwined The conquest of Jerusalem fit into another more dynamic vision of history: apocalypse Some historians grumble that if you’re out looking for apocalyptic concerns in medieval writing But that is exactly the point: apocalypticism is a way of looking a consciousness of history in a different register with events as headings in a new narrative the Crusader conquest of Jerusalem was like a sign reverberating backwards from the end point of history They are not the only ones to have seen history this way.  Far-Right rally goers in America today prominently display Crusader emblems repeatedly invoked Trump’s power to pardon them not unlike Crusaders who received assurances of salvation even if they died in battle without Last Rites Though “crusader” is a retrospective label historians like Jay Rubenstein have shown that these warriors saw themselves in a battle for the fulfillment of history This crusading outlook found enemies everywhere Crusaders rehearsed apocalyptic violence by massacring Jewish communities in Germany since Far-Right extremism is promiscuous in its emblems espousing any framework that will serve its monstrous purpose the inner mechanics of medieval apocalyptic thinking can illuminate a sense of history that has radicalized American Conservatives Not all apocalypticism insists that the literal end of the world is near Writing against the backdrop of global Communism Norman Cohn described millenarianism in terms of the anticipation of a collective total and proximate end as a force for mass revolution in history rather than the final destruction of life on earth Millenarianism appeared in social uprisings of the poor downtrodden and marginalized against long-standing oppressors It represented the potential for an abrupt break from the normal timeline to usher in a period of justice The rioters at the Capitol may have clothed themselves in the skin of beasts but in reality they were quite ordinary people who would shave their shaman beards they were role-playing an oppressed underclass oblivious to a real underclass that has managed for generations to resist with dignity and within the bounds of the law 6 parallels a medieval apocalyptic strain that is simultaneously reactionary It is apocalypticism as a consciousness of historical destiny and one’s own part in an unfolding ultimate drama this American apocalyptic relies on inversion and monstrosity.  “apocalypse” signals the end of an age of mercy in which good and evil were allowed to mingle apocalypse is also tied to a prophecy of universal empire Several rioters at the Capitol proclaimed Donald Trump “eternal emperor.” Some medieval Christians believed that a Last Emperor would rid the world of infidels uncertainty sometimes arises over who the ruler really is: a salvific emperor To some that distinction may mean little – as long as the apocalypse unfolds according to plan conservatives have been invoking apocalypse since the onset of the new millennium When the complacent nineties failed to provide an ultimate triumph of capitalist history right-wing commentators cast around for answers The Obama presidency offered several converging targets: Islam As the great scholar of medieval apocalypticism Bernard McGinn has argued even those who do not see the end at hand can espouse elements of apocalyptic thought and vocabulary apocalyptic language is a call to radical purification and retribution Medieval Christian thinkers saw social violence as a challenge to reason and spirit and so they tried to push beyond its surface and to understand its origins and deeper meaning – even if that meant staring down monsters But their mode of reading could radically change depending on what they believed the violence had revealed.  Where Guibert of Nogent saw misrule and bad faith in Laon, he saw a providential plan for End Times in Jerusalem. Today, some treat the attack on the Capitol as a moment come and gone. But with the way he's been competing recently it may not be long before we watch him swim for Canada in the Olympics within the decade the Coquitlam product broke another national record for his age group en route to a total of six medals at the 2023 Eastern Canadian Championships This included three individual golds for Kim in the Windsor And the high-octane performance came on the heels of winning the 2022 Sports BC male high school athlete of the year award Kim clocked a time of 1:53.32 in the men's 200-metre freestyle race on March 17 That swim is now the fastest in the 13-14 age group at the Canadian national and B.C and was the second record Kim has broken in seven months the Gleneagle Secondary student broke the national age-group record in the men's 800-metre freestyle race at the 2022 Canadian Junior and Senior Championships in Montreal Kim broke three other Canadian age-group records in the 200-metre butterfly 50- and 100-metre freestyle at the Ontario Junior International Kim also broke a second record at easterns — 56.25 in the 100-metre butterfly swimmer in the men's 13-14 division of the race His third solo gold came in the 100-metre freestyle with a time of 52.57 which was a full second ahead of second place Kim also brought back three other medals from team relay races with his Hyack Sim Club teammates (New Westminster) taking a fantastic stage win in the 4 Jours de Dunkerque on an uphill sprint into Laon The Frenchman surged out of the chasing group on the climb blasting past the remnants of the day's breakaway and diving through the twisting finale to take the victory over Ethan Vernon (Soudal-Quickstep) and Benoît Cosnefroy (AG2R Citroën) Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma) lost the race lead to Samuel Leroux (Van Rysel-Roubaix Lille Métropole) thanks to the time bonuses Leroux gained in the day's breakaway Stage 2 of the 4 Jours de Dunkerque got underway in Compiègne in pleasant conditions with race leader Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma) facing a less than ideal stage to keep the top spot with an uphill finish in Laon.  Pier-André Coté (Human Powered Health) Logan Currie (Bolton Equities Black Spoke) Samuel Leroux (Van Rysel-Roubaix Lille Métropole) and Damien Girard (Nice Métropole Côte d'Azur) made up the early breakaway but their hopes of contesting the stage win dimmed as their gap fell under 30 seconds with 45km remaining seemingly confident the six riders posed no threat and with the breakaway in sight on a long let the gap go back out over a minute with 30km to race The hilly finale ended Girard's time out front with 21km to go while the leaders still held 52 seconds on the peloton Their hopes rose as the gap stretched out over a minute with only 12km remaining the punchy finish soon spelled the end of their ambitions as the TotalEnergies-led chasing group reduced their advantage to 12 seconds with 6km to go A tough climb shattered the peloton and brought the leaders into sight and spat Leroux out the back He was picked up by an attack from the peloton as Coté Victor Lafay (Cofidis) jumped away from the chasing peloton and joined the trio but the AG2R Citroën-led bunch were hot on their heels They were caught at the base of the final climb and the Groupama blasted past the four leaders to snatch the stage win Results powered by FirstCycling she coordinates coverage for North American from the Gough map of c.1360 It has now been developed as a 250-mile trail by the British Pilgrimage Trust The travel journalist Gail Simmons decided to walk the Old Way in several sections across the year and with her journey articulated around the seasons of the Celtic calendar The enjoyable result combines a recognisable account of a walker’s ups and downs (“I peeled back my hood the rustle of Gore-tex ebbed away and I heard the world again”); a loving evocation of the cursive landscape of the Downs its local history and artists; the world of pre-Reformation pilgrimage and the story of Thomas Becket; and Woven through this is the author’s own history Brought up on Chiltern chalklands in a nomadic army family and aware of a “search for somewhere to belong” she sets out on her “pilgrimage in search of a lost path and my own topography within southern England’s chalk landscapes” She does not write as a full-on Christian pilgrim but as that pastorally familiar figure “with a strong sense of the sacred though not adhering to any formal religion in spite of my Church of England upbringing” who loves to visit empty ancient country churches for their sense of rootedness and peace She avoids going in when anything is happening The one time when we find her joining any group ceremony is with a gathering of Druids in a car park She is attached to the idea that a woman walking alone is “an act of resistance” fortuitously bumping into the TV pilgrim Peter Owen-Jones at his church (I walked the same stretch while writing this though I was serenaded by a trumpeter practising considerately inside thick church walls further down the line) she introduces us to the Old Way’s creator There has been a range of books in recent years about the revival of pilgrimage or long walks of self-discovery What Between the Chalk and the Sea gives us — its title seemingly half-lifted from Patrick Leigh Fermor’s tramping classic Between the Woods and the Water — is an attractive project by a travel journalist who brings her attention back home It is not a guide-book (and woefully lacks an outline route-map) but a lively and well-informed companion that makes you — pilgrim or walker — want to see the places for yourself whether with its ancient focus on the goal or the modern focus on the journey: “The path was my shrine.” And she reminds us that those medieval pilgrims had to turn around and walk all the way back But when the author declares that her mobile phone is “as essential a piece of kit today as a pair of good walking boots” Nick Dunne picks up where Gail Simmons finishes and speaks warmly of the priest who sent him off with a blessing as she does of the priest who offered her a blessing on arrival His pilgrimage follows the Via Francigena (“the way through France”) from Canterbury to Laon with a significant detour along the Western Front Voluntary redundancy as a social worker was the opportunity for Dunne to combine this first stage of a projected walk to Rome with a longstanding interest in the First World War he is good at evoking the Christian past of the churches and shrines that punctuate his route he makes every effort to go inside and join with local people in the Christian present even when he finds himself invited to take his turn in reading prayers in his schoolboy French The military aspect of his journey occupies much of the book and Dunne draws extensively on his background knowledge and previous visits “The Western Front is a path that has defined the historical the spiritual landscape of the 20th century.” Its battle lines and cemeteries are clearly not a detour but a part of this pilgrimage on holy ground The vision of a WWI soldier inspired the historian and former head teacher to walk across Europe The miraculous post-war reconstruction of Ypres and its cathedral speaks to him of death and resurrection and of how the blowing to bits of so many combatants caused theologians to struggle with the doctrine of the resurrection of the body notable among them a stretcher-bearer at Verdun And the author finds himself concluding that the real question about the resurrection of Christ is not how it happened The Revd Philip Welsh is a retired priest in the diocese of London.Between the Chalk and the Sea: A journey on foot into the pastGail SimmonsHeadline £22(978-1-4722-8027-5)Church Times
