and Erin McNeice and Seo Chaehyun shared gold
This wasn't the case this time around in Bali, however. Only two athletes earned gold medals, with stunning performances. Following powerful performances, Erin McNeice took sole first place for the women after reaching the top
and Yoshida Satone of Japan secured the victory for the men (score of 42)
this marked Yoshida's first World Cup gold medal—a celebratory win for the 20-year-old climber
"I was very confident after getting first place in the semi-final and I went into the final very positive," said Yoshida, per the IFSC
I can't quite believe I got the gold medal yet

Max Bertone of France, with a score of 41
and Alberto Ginés López earned the bronze medal with a score of 39+
McNeice did not have to share gold time at this event; she was the single gold medalist
Seo Chaehyun took the silver medal for the women
and the bronze medal was awarded to Ai Mori
McNeice has been on fire in recent competitions and hopes to keep up the momentum with similar performances as the season progresses

Gagosian is gearing up to host a stunning solo exhibition titled At One by the pioneering Light and Space artist James Turrell
Set to open at the gallery’s Le Bourget location in France
this show is celebrated as the most extensive survey of Turrell’s work in Europe in over 25 years
It will feature a diverse selection of early projection pieces
All Clear (2024) and Either Or (2024) from his renowned Wedgework series
James Turrell, a pivotal figure in the art world since the 1960s
is known for transforming light into his primary medium
moving away from traditional painting and sculpture to explore human perception and spatial awareness
His contemporaries include visionaries like Dan Flavin and Robert Irwin
all of whom disrupted the conventional understanding of art
a phenomenon that occurs when the brain is deprived of visual stimuli
leading to a heightened awareness of light and color
This effect is captured in his new installation Ganzfeld
which immerses visitors in a wash of vivid color
creating an otherworldly experience that echoes skiing in blinding snow or diving into deep waters
Turrell’s fascination with light as both a medium and a subject is at the heart of his creative practice
“We usually use light to illuminate things,” Turrell once said
“I am interested in the ‘thingness’ of light itself
as it is the revelation itself.” This thought-provoking perspective is embedded in every piece on display
In addition to the mesmerizing light installations
the exhibition will include archival prints
offering a deeper insight into Turrell’s expansive body of work
Also featured are two lap desks used by the artist in the 1980s
adding a personal touch to the retrospective
At One is set to run from October 14 through June 2025
giving audiences ample time to experience Turrell’s immersive light environments at Gagosian Le Bourget
This exhibition is a must-see for those intrigued by the intersection of art

Gagosian is set to unveil a new solo exhibition entitled At One by legendary Light and Space artist James Turrell at its Le Bourget location in France
The show is being hailed as the largest survey on Turrell’s work in Europe over the past 25 years
and will present an array of early projection works
The action hasn’t even begun for Sport Climbing’s second appearance at an Olympic Games, but the legacy plan is already in place for development of the sport around the world following its conclusion.
Once the climbers have competed, the medals have been won and the Olympians return home, equipment from Paris 2024 will have already started its journey to five destinations across the globe.
The Holds, Macros and Volumes – or simply put, the colourful objects attached to the wall that make the routes – will be distributed across five continents for use by IFSC member federations to help grow climbing in the region.
IFSC President Marco Scolaris said: “Our philosophy is, and has always been, to ‘make the world better through climbing’, so legacy is a very important part of that for the IFSC. The distribution of the Olympic equipment will be a source of inspiration long after the Games is over.
“The Le Bourget Climbing venue that will host our second Olympic appearance at Paris 2024 was always intended to leave a legacy within the host city, and we are happy to be adding and strengthening that legacy by leaving some of the holds we will use right here, at their new home, where they belong.”
The legacy plan in Europe by Paris 2024 and for the Le Bourget area will see the isolation and warm up area used during the Games repurposed and turned into a public climbing gym that will be named ‘Marie Paradis’ in honour of the first woman to climb Mont Blanc.
For Asia, Jordan will be the destination; material will be used to host regional and continental clinics and educational courses for officials, coaches, and athletes, which will be organised together with the IFSC Research and Development Department. All Member Federations in West Asia region will be invited to participate to such activities with the intention of growing the sport in their area.
For Africa, South Africa will be the recipients; and for Oceania, Australia will receive holds; in both cases, part of the equipment will be used exclusively for Continental competitions happening in 2025 and 2026; and another part will be re-distributed within the continent and used in workshops and clinics aimed at developing the sport.
In Pan America, El Salvador will receive holds from Paris 2024, but the region is also seen as an area of targeted growth with further legacy and development programs in the works.
Climbers from the Pan American region were part of the IFSC Universality Program that focussed on exposing selected athletes to international competition with dedicated coaching and travel expenses covered by the IFSC and through Olympic Solidarity funding.
More training and clinics are planned for Costa Rica at the end of 2024 with the IFSC’s ambition to build the first Speed climbing wall in the country dependant on further funding approval.
The material supplied for use at Paris 2024 was done so with the agreement in place that it would be distributed by the IFSC as a legacy for development of Sport Climbing after the Olympic Games.
The selected brands that make up the P24 Online Catalogue: Holds, Macros, and Volumes for Sport Climbing events at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 are:
Not only the Holds, Macros and Volumes, but all of the equipment used during the Games – the mats, the walls, the autobelay systems – are all intended to be reused in the future with planning ongoing with suppliers EP Climbing and Perfect Descent to determine how that will look.

IFSC President Marco Scolaris was joined by the federation’s Executive Board at the foot of the Paris 2024 Speed wall to host and welcome online National Federation representatives from around the world to the Olympic Games
Scolaris addressed the attendees online and covered many Olympic related subjects with the wish of bringing the climbing world closer together
even if they could not be in Paris in person
Joining President Scolaris on the competition stage was ISFC General Secretary Debra Gawrych
IFSC Africa Representative George Stainton and Willy Montenegro Garcia
President Scolaris began by acknowledging the task undertaken by the previous Games host in extremely hard times: “Thank you
for what you have done in 2020 and in 2021
your strength made possible the impossible
overcoming huge and unprecedented obstacles and difficulties
those Olympic Games were an Act of Faith in the future.”
the legacy and inclusion were all addressed with President Scolaris saying: “We are proud to be here in Le Bourget
to celebrate our sport in our stand-alone venue
President Emmanuel Macron declared that ‘Les Jeux doivent faire plus pour la banlieue’ - The Games must do more for the suburbs
“The Olympic Climbing changed the whole area
It looked forgotten and abandoned when we visited it for the first time
it is now clean and ready to welcome future generations of students and sport lovers
And for the future generation of climbers too
The legacy of Climbing after the Games has been known for some time with the warm-up area during Paris 2024 transformed into a public gym post-Games named ‘Marie Paridis’ after the first female to reach the summit of Mont Blanc
“The story of Marie Paradis reminds me that Paris 2024 is the first edition of the Olympic Games with full gender parity in terms of athlete participation,” said President Scolaris
and only in sport considered suitable for them
we did not have to wait so long in climbing
President Scolaris highlighted the location of the climbing venue as significant in an important topic for everyone
not just climbers: “Le-Bourget is also the place where in 2015 the countries of the world met for the United Nations climate change conference
a landmark agreement was reached by almost 200 countries to combat climate change and to accelerate and intensify the actions and investments needed for a sustainable low carbon future
it charted a new course in the global climate effort
Turning attention back to the present and the Olympic Games
President Scolaris highlighted a first of its kind at Paris 2024 – the unique Opening Ceremony: “The Games of the thirty-third Olympiad Paris 2024 began under the rain
that accompanied the entire Opening Ceremony.”
“An unconventional Opening Ceremony driven by a complex symbolism
“Through the first week we enjoyed the passion for sport
President Scolaris moved back to one of the most important parts of any Olympic Games – the athletes: “Tomorrow
Let’s be prepared to welcome them on stage
“The climbing walls seem to come from a fairy-tale
They are real like the dream we are living
let us enjoy together the spirit climbing is bringing to the Olympic Games
With a final sign off president Scolaris said goodbye to the attendees with some words in the native language of the hosts and co-founder of the International Olympic Committee

the pioneering American artist reflects on his life’s quest: transforming how we perceive space","url":"https://www.artbasel.com/stories/james-turrell-american-artist-light-numero-gagosian-le-bourget-arizona-roden","image":{"@type":"ImageObject","url":"https://d2u3kfwd92fzu7.cloudfront.net/asset/news/Le_Bourget_Ganzfeld_2_copy.jpeg","width":5000,"height":3336}}In collaboration with Numéro art
James Turrell has been working on a sky observatory nestled in a 400,000-year-old extinct volcano in northern Arizona
the Roden Crater and the surrounding site have been transformed over the course of this ambitious project
which features luminous tunnels and galleries that open to the sky and are bathed in light
About 20 underground spaces are woven into the architecture of this exceptional domain
drawing inspiration from the Mayan pyramids of Central America and also the history of the Hopi
the Native American inhabitants of the region
the site represents the culmination of a life’s work for the artist
and light combine to create a unique sensory experience; something akin to the total artwork so idealized by the Romantics
‘You know that friend who’s been working on their thesis forever
the Roden Crater is kind of like that,’ the artist jokes
and increasing production costs have significantly extended his timeline
Talking from his studio in the nearby city of Flagstaff
Turrell appears in front of an enormous photograph of the volcano
as if a window had been opened to reveal this panoramic view
with a rainbow forming a surprising halo around the 81-year-old artist
The fortuitous image is eloquent: James Turrell now ranks among the legends of contemporary art, not only thanks to this long-term project but through the creation of a radical and innovative body of work based on the immaterial. Now, the artist, nicknamed the ‘master of light,’ presents a major solo exhibition at Gagosian
which has entrusted him with the keys to its Le Bourget space
just a stone’s throw from the airport on the outskirts of Paris
and no focus,’ Turrell summarized a few years ago
This is particularly evident in his series of ‘Ganzfeld’ works
based on the eponymous effect that occurs when exposure to a uniform
featureless field triggers a state of sensory deprivation
Turrell’s installations immerse the viewer in a monochromatic bath – red
Visitors to the Gagosian exhibition are welcomed by one of the artist’s latest ‘Ganzfeld’ works
an LED screen and colored lights do all the work
the artist considers this work much more pictorial than sculptural
a purely two-dimensional impression of flatness
‘We have lost the habit of entering paintings
and I want my pieces to revive this experience,’ explains the artist
for whom the aura of an artwork is essential
Turrell’s art would probably have never seen the light of day without his consuming passion for aviation
the young man had his eyes fixed on the sky from an early age
He obtained his pilot’s license at just 16 years old and began flying
‘I remember flying one day in the middle of the tule fog
a very low thick fog specific to California
which plunged the sky into a red that became orange
Moving through this completely abstract landscape was striking.’
This journey would inspire his ‘Wedgework’ series
of which a recent example is on display at Gagosian
Through the projection of fluorescent-colored lights onto reflective surfaces in a room
Turrell generates an impression of depth that extends beyond the walls
He also draws on his passion for the celestial world in his most popular works
the ‘Skyspaces’; outdoor capsules that can accommodate anything from a handful of people to several dozen
Thanks to an opening in the roof to admire the sky
and the meeting of natural and artificial light inside
visitors can abandon themselves to moments of intense contemplation
Nestled beneath the volcano’s surface and its cone of ash
the Roden Crater contains several of these ‘Skyspaces’
For more than 40 years, the Roden Crater project’s progress has been traced through numerous plans, photographs, holograms, and models; all considered artworks in their own right. In these objects, some of which are presented in the Gagosian exhibition, what shines through above all is the artist’s love for Arizona’s landscape. ‘Like Georgia O’Keeffe and Agnes Martin
That’s why I try to go on walks every day.’ Beyond his daily walks
‘As long as my insurance allows me to,’ he adds
Turrell works daily with two architects and visits the Roden Crater site almost every day
and together they manage the vast ranch on site
Production of the artworks is delegated to specialized contractors
depending on where they will be presented; French manufacturers worked on the Gagosian exhibition
This well-oiled machine allows the artist to remain productive and visible internationally
Turrell remains evasive about the public opening date of the Roden Crater
continuing to maintain the myth and pique curiosity
One question remains: how does one maintain the same course for so long
without becoming discouraged by such a pharaonic project and the numerous difficulties it entails
we just reveal ourselves gradually,’ responds the artist
implicitly reminding us how the journey prevails over the destination
the more we learn about ourselves.’ This rather Socratic philosophy aligns with the thinking of one of his greatest literary role models
the writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: ‘The earth teaches us more about ourselves than all the books in the world because it resists us
Man discovers himself when he measures himself against an obstacle.’

the billionaire founder and CEO of the Telegram messaging app
was arrested at Le Bourget airport outside Paris Saturday evening
The warrant reportedly covers offenses related to Telegram
There was no confirmation from French officials
The arrest was made by investigators from the National Anti-Fraud Office, part of the French Customs Department, according to the reports. Durov, who has been criticized for alleged insufficient moderation on the encrypted Telegram app
is accused of refusing to cooperate with authorities
The arrest warrant issued by French prosecutors alleges that Telegram’s encryption and inadequate moderation of content amount to complicity in terrorism
Telegram on Sunday night directed to an emoji-filled statement in which it said it abides by all EU laws
that Durov has nothing to hide and frequently travels in Europe
The statement said: "It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform."
The French interior ministry and police had no comment, Reuters reported
The Russian foreign ministry said its embassy in Paris was clarifying the situation around Durov
TF1 reported that French authorities were checking Durov’s possible connections with the Kremlin
Durov was expected to appear in court on Sunday
The Telegram platform has around 900 million active users and is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world
It has end-to-end encryption of communications
which are criticized for their commercial exploitation of personal data
Telegram has taken a different approach to the confidentiality of user exchanges and data
It has pledged never to disclose information about its users
or blaming them for an accident,” Agranovsky was quoted as saying
Following Durov's reported detention, John Scott-Railton, senior researcher at Toronto University’s Citizen Lab, tweeted: "Arrests of employees of big platforms over moderation & access are rare."
“I’m pretty sure this is an unprecedented action by a government against a large platform’s CEO,” Scott-Railton said in a post on X
Meanwhile, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Sunday that the Russian-born Durov miscalculated by fleeing Russia and thinking that he would never have to cooperate with the government authorities abroad

Opening on October 14, Gagosian Le Bourget will unveil an expansive exhibition by renowned light artist James Turrell
marking his largest showcase in Europe in over two decades
This landmark event highlights Turrell’s innovative exploration of light as a material and medium for altering perception
Two new large-scale installations headline the exhibition: All Clear (2024)
a Ganzfeld piece that immerses viewers in colored light to dissolve spatial boundaries
a Wedgework installation where projected light interacts with reflective surfaces
pushing the limits of visual depth and dimension
These works exemplify Turrell’s ongoing fascination with perceptual phenomena
inviting viewers to experience light as both a tangible and ethereal presence
who began manipulating light in architectural spaces in the 1960s
continues to push the boundaries of human perception through his minimalist yet technologically advanced works
His pieces often evoke disorienting experiences akin to entering a cloud or diving into a deep void
which creates a sensory environment without edges or depth cues
prompting a visceral encounter with light itself
the exhibition features the projection works Shanta
as well as six new in-wall Glassworks pieces
Also on display are archival materials and models from Turrell’s monumental Roden Crater project in Arizona
a naked-eye observatory designed to connect viewers with the celestial movements of the sky
James Turrell’s influential career spans more than five decades
with his work featured in prominent collections worldwide
Guggenheim Museum in New York and Tate Modern in London
His ability to manipulate light and space has positioned him as a pioneer in the field of perceptual art
with a legacy that continues to shape contemporary art discourse
This exhibition at Gagosian Le Bourget offers a rare opportunity for European audiences to engage with Turrell’s groundbreaking work on an unprecedented scale
reaffirming his status as one of the most important artists of our time
At One will be open to the public from October 14

Recently constructed facilities for the Summer Games include an aquatics center
climbing walls and a gymnastics and badminton arena
Global attention turns to Paris on Friday for the beginning of the 2024 Olympics
But despite hosting 10,000 athletes competing in 329 medal events at the Summer Games
the city has seen the construction of only a few new sports facilities
a climbing wall venue and a gymnastics and badminton arena
Opened in May, the Aquatics Centre in the Saint-Denis neighborhood of Paris’ northern suburbs has a modular configuration, with the ability to switch from a 5,000-seat venue during the games to a 2,500 seats for other events in the future. The venue cost $190 million
The center, built by Paris-based Bouygues Construction
diving and water polo events this summer and will be open to the community after the Games
Designed by Dutch architecture firm VenhoevenCS and the French firm Ateliers 2/3/4 with low-carbon features
the roof of the timber building is covered with photovoltaic panels
making it one of France’s largest urban solar farms and supplying all the energy the facility needs
The Porte de la Chapelle Arena opened in central Paris on Feb
The site for badminton and rhythmic gymnastics was the only new venue to be built in the middle of the city for the Games
Designed by French architecture firms SCAU and NP2F
the arena has a capacity of 8,000 and will also host badminton and powerlifting at this year’s Paris Paralympic Games
It was also built by Bouygues Construction
The open-air Le Bourget Sport Climbing venue, which will also be a permanent fixture after the Games are over
is located in the neighborhood of Seine-St
Designed to host competitions in the relatively new Olympic offering of sport climbing
the venue encompasses an indoor wall for warming up and four outdoor walls
The sport made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 with a single men’s event and single women’s event
there will be two events per gender: a standalone speed event and a combined event for bouldering plus lead
The lack of major new construction in Paris is a departure from previous Olympics. In 2021, eight new permanent venues and 10 temporary facilities went up for the Tokyo Games, which had been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

French prosecutors on Wednesday freed Telegram CEO Pavel Durov from police custody after four days of questioning over allegations that the messaging app is being used for illegal activities
Durov was detained on Saturday at Le Bourget airport outside Paris as part of a judicial inquiry opened last month involving 12 alleged criminal violations
“An investigating judge has ended Pavel Durov’s police custody and will have him brought to court for a first appearance and a possible indictment,” a statement from the Paris prosecutor’s office said
include that his platform is being used for child sexual abuse material and drug trafficking
fraud and abetting organized crime transactions
and that Telegram refused to share information or documents with investigators when required by law
Durov’s arrest in France has caused outrage in Russia
with some government officials calling it politically motivated and proof of the West’s double standard on freedom of speech
The outcry has raised eyebrows among Kremlin critics because in 2018
Russian authorities themselves tried to block the Telegram app but failed
where Telegram is widely used despite being officially banned after years of protests challenging the country’s Shiite theocracy
Durov’s arrest in France prompted comments from the Islamic Republic’s supreme leader
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei weighed in with veiled praise for France for being “strict” against those who “violate your governance” of the internet
French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday that Durov’s arrest wasn’t a political move but part of an independent investigation
Macron posted on X that his country “is deeply committed” to freedom of expression but “freedoms are upheld within a legal framework
to protect citizens and respect their fundamental rights.”

The opening of the Summer Olympic Games on Friday in Paris provided a boost to private aviation in the host city
According to industry data tracker Argus International
the overwhelming majority of this traffic went to Le Bourget Airport (LFPB)
which saw a more than 34% increase in arrivals compared with the same July period a year ago
as well as 14 twin-engine and 50 single-engine turboprops
Argus senior v-p for software Travis Kuhn told BJT that for July
this year’s arrivals at LFBP are down by nearly 10% versus 2023
with ExecuJet reporting that its hangar and ramp parking are fully booked
Signature said it received a steady flow of traffic at its facility but
due to high slots and parking restrictions at the airport
it was limited to quick turnarounds since its parking was full as well
Universal Weather and Aviation noted that it is coordinating spillovers to regional airports where it has made arrangements
adding that due to the high-security measures in and around the French capital
all non-Olympic travel is simply avoiding the area
WingX noted that the Olympics—along with other major July sporting events such as the Euro soccer tournament
and the British Open Golf Tournament—sparked a 4% increase in business jet activity in Europe compared to the previous month
and a 15% increase from pre-COVID July 2019

world number one Anraku started with two top holds to take a commanding 14.6-point lead (69.0) overall going into Wednesday’s Lead semi-final

with a packed crowd cheering vociferously for all 20 competitors
and it was a while before a top hold was achieved
but the noise from that moment was nothing on the levels when home hope Avezou scaled the fourth and final boulder shortly after
Meanwhile, Czechia's Ondra – chasing Olympic gold after missing out on the podium at Tokyo 2020 – saved his best for last to finish fifth overall after scoring 24.8 on the last boulder, as did Japan’s Narasaki.

However, this half of the semi-final belonged to Anraku.
And in truth, it was an utter masterclass from the rising star, who went better than his opening 24.9 with a perfect 25.0 on the second boulder to gasps from the crowd.
The gravity-defying climb involved a daring leap for the top hold, with the crowd appreciating the move they had just witnessed as he jumped up to first.
And just after Great Britain’s Roberts scored 24.7 on the final boulder to finish third, Anraku came out to a huge roar as the last climber to complete this stage of the event.
With the stage to himself, Anraku was unable to achieve a third top hold, but going into Wednesday’s lead semi-final he is primed to make the final and looks to be the climber to beat.
