The event is not merely a celebration of the Cabot’s centennial; in 2020
The Cabot — a view from an opera box
When the Ware Theater opened in Beverly on December 3
it was hailed as “the most impressive auditorium of its size east of New York.” Built to provide local audiences with the era’s predominant forms of entertainment — vaudeville shows and silent movies — it was designed by the same architectural firm that drew up the blueprints for the Boston Athenaeum and the Strand Theater in Dorchester
Today the venue is known as the Cabot Performing Arts Center, and no pandemic will stand in the way of marking its centennial with a gala event: Lights. Camera. Cabot. The 100th-anniversary celebration will be streamed live on December 3 at 7 p.m
Audience members are required to RSVP in order to receive the online login information — the event is free of charge
This is even more impressive given the diverse roster of talent who will appear and perform (some from the Cabot’s actual stage)
Each will play very short sets of a couple of tunes apiece
but it’s still an amazing slate of musicians
the greater Boston area’s entertainment landscape was being battered by venue closings
clubs and theaters have been struggling to stay afloat without the ability to present live shows
and audiences who have no concerts to attend
In contrast to that discouraging state of affairs
the Cabot is celebrating its own history while also providing top-notch live entertainment
The event will even begin with an unveiling of the building’s newly renovated lobby — a space that the general public will otherwise not be able to inhabit for the foreseeable future
Audience members will also have the opportunity to bid on items in a silent auction and make donations to help the Cabot endure these difficult times
the event will honor the Cabot’s founders: not the original Ware brothers
but those enterprising people who saved the Cabot a few years ago
The original founders sold their theater to E.M
Then it was purchased by Le Grand David and His Own Spectacular Magic Company in 1976
For a Guinness-certified record-setting 37 years
the Cabot hosted Le Grand David’s magic show
Enter a group of North Shore residents and community leaders who banded together to form a nonprofit that owns what is now officially named the Cabot Performing Arts Center
The contemporary group of founders — Henry Bertolon
and Paul Van Ness — will be celebrated during the event
not least because of their wise commitment to save the Cabot as a performing arts venue and not let it become condos
That in itself is something to celebrate in this day and age

Cabot House students expressed frustration at this year’s upperclassmen housing lottery after extra beds were added to suites due to limited capacity
Thirty suites were modified to accommodate an extra bed
20 of them being four-person suites converted for five residents
eight of which are “N+1” housing — suites with a bedroom for each person and a shared common room
Several Cabot suites will be turned into administrative offices over the summer so that administrators are “accessible to all students,” according to an April 2 email to residents from Cabot House administrator Palmer A
even with Cabot’s swing housing (I can’t speak for other Houses)
we still don’t have enough bed spaces for all of the students with a fall room reservation,” Berry’s email said
Berry’s email also stated that Cabot will have to “return” some “borrowed” swing housing in the Cronkhite Center to its neighboring Quad Houses
While the three Quad Houses are about a 15 minute walk from the nine River Houses
they have traditionally boasted larger rooms and more N+1 housing
“It kind of loses the magic of being in the quad,” Khanh Le ’25 said
“A very well advertised perk of being in the quad is having N+1”
“Now we feel like we live in Kirkland or Eliot or something,” Le added
Pema Choedon ’25 said she was initially in “disbelief” when she realized she might not get N+1 housing as a senior
but we got to the point of looking at hallway singles.”
“I was just really shocked that we had to look at singles instead of suites,” she added
While Choedon and her roommates had N+1 housing this past year as juniors
they will have an “N” suite with three bedrooms and a common room for four people as seniors
one of us will be sleeping in the common room — since we are not going to be sharing the double — so we are not going to have a common room anymore,” she said
“I think it’s really going to affect our social lives.”
Janmyr ’26 — a rising junior in Cabot — said she has heard a lot of students complaining in a Cabot-wide GroupMe chat about the decline in N+1 rooms this year
“I think what you expect in the upperclassmen houses is that it gets better each year,” she said
“The room that we’re getting now is the same that we got our sophomore year.”
Students speculated that the cause of the limited capacity is due to the inflated size of the rising senior class
Some attributed it to renovations at River Houses increasing the number of rising sophomores in the Quad
According to the Cabot housing lottery spreadsheet
119 beds — 24 singles in overflow housing and 19 five-person rooms
all of which were originally intended to be four-person rooms — remain for the rising sophomores
Some students expressed concerns about housing for Cabot’s incoming sophomore class
who will be forced to choose between singles and five-person suites
rather than the historically more common four-person suites
the incoming sophomores will more likely be randomized together so that they will probably have random roommates in a group of five,” Le said
Many students said they were frustrated by the lack of information provided in advance of the lottery
the results of which took away a “perk” of living in the quad
“This is all being taken away relatively shortly without clear communication,” Le said of N+1 housing
Smyers ’25 said student frustration stems from a perception that administrators “either don’t know what’s going on
or aren’t really able to do anything about it.”
“It seems like for students — especially for seniors — who are frustrated with their living arrangements
that there’s no recourse and there’s no plan for anything that we could do,” Smyers added
A College spokesperson wrote in a statement that the housing lottery process can be “stressful” for students
“particularly in this moment given our expanded population of undergraduate students and the use of multiple swing buildings after the COVID years and during House Renewal work.”
“Many departments coordinate together to support the residential communities
the Dean of Students Office and the House staff
and we deeply appreciate the patience of our students as we navigate these factors together,” the spokesperson wrote

This past week I visited the Cabot Theatre in Beverly
At the time it was hailed as “the most impressive auditorium of its size east of New York.”
Designed by the same architects as Boston’s Athenaeum and Olympia Theater
the Cabot was initially called The Ware Theater
and for its first 40 years of operation served as a center of community life in downtown Beverly
In 1960 the venue was purchased by the E.M
Loews group and was renamed the Cabot Cinema
It was sold to Le Grand David and His Own Spectacular Magic Company in 1976
and for 37 years the Cabot hosted Le Grand David’s magic show
and winning recognition in the Guinness Book of Records as well as Time
It’s estimated that 20,000 movie theaters were built in the U.S
in the 1920s; the Cabot is one of approximately 250 similar movie palaces remaining in existence
Its future came into doubt when the Magic Company wound down and the venue was put up for sale
but fortunately it was purchased by Henry Bertolon in 2014 and saved from the wrecking ball
and in October 2015 the new Cabot board named its first Executive Director
Subsequently, the Board embarked on a multi-phase renovation with the goal of completing the plan before the Cabot’s 100th Anniversary in 2020. Improvements include new fire escapes, installation of a digital cinema projection system and new theater sound system, new seating on the first floor and orchestra level viewing platform, a completely new HVAC system with reinforcement of the roof, and an upgrade of the P.A. with a hung system from Meyer Sound
According to Cabot Production Manager and seasoned engineer Bill Winn
We previously had two Meyer 700-HPs per side
the bass transfers very nicely between the floor and the balcony
so we now have excellent coverage upstairs as well as downstairs
“On top are six Meyer M’elodie cabinets [per side],” he continues
so the coverage in the balcony was lacking
is flown with six LINAs underneath the M’elodie cabs
The M’elodies are focused on the balcony areas and the LINAs are directed toward the floor seating.”
As you might imagine in a 100-year-old building
reinforcement of the roof was required before the P.A
“The chandelier in the middle of the ceiling has been hanging there since 1920 and it’s really heavy,” Winn says
“Gravity has actually pulled it down six or seven inches over the years
The only way to save it was to redo all of the roof construction
There was some original steel in the building but most of it was timber
That allowed us to do two things: One was to install a brand-new HVAC system [nice to have
especially in the summer months when it hits 90 degrees!]
The chain motors are in the roof above the ceiling that you see inside the theater
Small holes were drilled through the plaster
It’s really clean and doesn’t spoil the appearance of the room
The system is driven with a Meyer Galileo Galaxy
Two Meyer UPA-1Cs are used for front fill (one of them is used for the center channel when the Cabot does cinema)
and three Meyer UPM-1Ps are used for the downstage fill
Having mixed at the Cabot several times in the past
it was easy to hear the improvements in the P.A
Vocals are clear and present literally everywhere in the room—even at the last row of the balcony
The total of 12 cabinets per side in the hang provides tons of headroom so you don’t need to floor the gas pedal to fill the room with sound

Golf Du Medoc Resort has been rebranded as Cabot Bordeaux
It becomes the sixth Cabot property worldwide

The news comes as golf in France takes center stage from Aug
"Bordeaux holds a special place in the hearts of travelers worldwide
known not only for its rich history and stunning landscapes
but also for its remarkable culinary offerings and universally revered wine,” said Ben Cowan-Dewar
“We are thrilled to now have a presence in this iconic destination and look forward to offering guests unforgettable experiences that seamlessly blend exploration and cultural immersion with world-class golf."

The April 14 event featured Tedeschi Trucks Fireside Live and legendary R&B and gospel singer Mavis Staples
a pair of performances that blew away the audience
Tedeschi Trucks is “probably the best band that’s ever played on that stage,” he says
and Staples “just burned the house down with her performance.”
“From start to finish it was an incredible show,” Soward says
The money raised will be used to install a limited use/limited access elevator to transportpatrons
and artists between the street-level lobby
The project will include significant masonry
and electrical work to prepare the 100-year-old building to accommodate an elevator
“That project is going to be a game-changer for the Cabot,” Soward says
The elevator installation is just one part of a multi-year $9.5 million capital campaign aimed at renovating the historic theater inside and out
the theater unveiled extensive lobby renovations including a complete restoration of the vaulted ceiling
renovation of its box office and concessions area
and restoration of the original chandelier
a nonprofit was formed to acquire the theater
Soward hopes the Big Night event will become a staple of North Shore cultural life
“We’re already talking about next year,” he says
“It’s a brand we want to build – we want to have the biggest bash on the North Shore every year.”

fantasy and grandeur make up the life’s work of Le Grand David and his own Spectacular Magic Company
a magic troupe that’s cast its spell over audiences for 35 years
the company reflects on its past and contemplates its next act
At the Cabot Street Cinema Theatre in Beverly
The curtain has just gone down for the last time on a magic show that’s thrilled audiences here for 35 years
“It’s like traveling to an imaginary place.” Bull was only 22 when
under the tutelage of Cuban-born magician and teacher Cesareo Pelaez
as he and the rest of the company lived out Pelaez’s vision to create a magic company with its own permanent home
“Cesareo’s idea from the very beginning was to buy a place
even as he could no longer perform himself
he watched the shows from the wings in his wheelchair
as Bull and the troupe “come up for air” after 35 years
“I feel a great sense of completion and accomplishment that this is the pause that refresheth.”
After suffering a stroke more than a decade ago
Graham still works at the theater every day
She credits the people at the theater with helping her through the difficult years after her stroke
“I don’t know how I could have gotten through-especially those first months-without the help and support of my friends in the magic company,” she says
“Just being around this amazingly creative group of people has kept me young at heart.”

It’s been a few decades since Gary Gulman witnessed the local mystique of Le Grand David at The Cabot as a kid enthralled with the world of magic
as he makes his way back to his old North Shore stomping grounds this week to occupy that very stage himself in support of his book and a new hour of stand-up
that mystique is sure to return with a bit of evolution tied to it
With a two-night stay at The Cabot starting tonight (March 14)
the Peabody native brings his latest stand-up tour back to the commonwealth to celebrate his 2023 memoir Misfit: Growing Up Awkward in the ‘80s
While it’s exciting for him to bring this collection of stories and reflections back even closer to home this time (and fill in the details in between with his fresh hour of stand-up)
Gulman is also just pumped to be able to deliver some new jokes that are incredibly specific to the area — even if he’s feeling a bit ambivalent towards possibly enabling the provincial North Shore lifers who refuse to make their way into Boston
“The last time I was in Beverly at North Shore Music Theatre
I told the story of the 1980s mall wars between Liberty Tree Mall and the North Shore Shopping Center
and I just love telling those stories,” Gulman tells Vanyaland
“The other thing that I’m excited about is that it’s kind of a weird reunion where a lot of people I went to school with or who are from my hometown will be there
but it’s a type of controlled reunion where I get to talk for two hours and nobody can interrupt me
Then I get to mingle with them after the show for a very short time
just long enough for them to tell me how nice it is to see me
but it’s like a narcissist’s dream reunion where you have to devote very little emotion
While writing a book was a new creative venture for Gulman for a plethora of reasons
it also challenged his usual processes that he employs when building a new stand-up set
he does feel he had an immediate advantage of having developed a voice in stand-up over the years that worked well in transcribing his thoughts onto paper
he also had a pandemic’s worth of time to make mistakes in writing
iron them out and turn them into a new strength that helped him hone in on the elements of reading and listening audiobooks that he enjoys as an avid reader himself
“There were certain jokes and certain important points that I wanted to make,” says Gulman
“and when I struggled [to type them out]
I would apply the same process I use with a stand-up joke that I’m trying to nail
and that’s the process of writing it out in different ways
and then I would also be saying it out loud because there’s a rhythm I want in my stand-up
I was also aware of my desire to do an audio version of the book
and I really appreciate it when the author reads it
It was important all along the way that I was able to deliver the things I wrote in a compelling and mellifluous way where
That poetry and deeper attention to rhythm and flow also helped Gulman as he returned to the stage following the pandemic shutdowns
and that resulted in his evolution as a storyteller
Many of those storytelling elements were employed as he built what would become his most recent stand-up HBO special
which showcased a new confidence that the former Boston College Eagle commanded the stage with
he took inspiration from a couple of comedians he’s admired for a long time
particularly George Carlin and Brian Regan
as his latest special volleys between lighthearted jokes
his own money troubles and resentment toward the ultra-wealthy
and a long story at the end that he was able to hang a bunch of quick but well-crafted jokes onto
Not only did it make for a multi-layered offering that exhibits all of Gulman’s greatest comedic and creative strengths to his audience
but it also posed as a fun and exciting challenge for him internally
as he continued to work in areas that he may not have been comfortable in before
“My favorite example of that is George Carlin
where there would be really silly wordplay and light stuff
then he’d switch into really heavy social and political commentary that could be strident
there were scatalogical jokes about bodily functions and stuff like that
and there was very traditional observational comedy
and some insight and analysis into words and trends,” adds Gulman
“That was sort of his collage of what a special was
and what I like to do is mix a lot of different ideas into jokes
so that even when I’m talking about my childhood
I remember reading something Brian Regan had said about how whenever he’s in an area that he becomes known for
and I think that’s a really good position to take in terms of keeping it interesting
Also taking inspirations from a slight imperfection in an Edward Hopper painting and the meticulous combing that Bruce Springsteen employs when writing a new song
Gulman is forever intrigued by the ability to take a joke or premise and handpick each word to make it as strong as it can possibly be
Gulman just enjoys the fact that he’s found a profession in which reading and dissecting words has been a huge part of being able to do his job and to get better at it as time goes on
“I love the song ‘A Day In The Life’ by The Beatles
where it starts out with him reading the newspaper about this guy who committed suicide at a traffic light
but even as a child when I first heard that song
when Lennon says ‘he blew his mind out in a car,’ I remember realizing that if he had said he blew his brains out in a car
and it just hits a different way,” he says
“It’s possible that it’s an expression that the British use
but it’s also possible that he recognized the sound and the rhythm of that
I also love how that song becomes two or three different songs
with changes in tone and time signatures and everything
and whenever I can apply something from a different artform to comedy
it’s a nice way to be original while you’re not really being that original
You’re just taking a concept from another artform
Acknowledging how fortunate he feels to have an audience that is thoughtful
Gulman has found a significant amount of catharsis in the process of rehashing and building onto these stories in front of audiences
he sees it as a sort of revenge on the pain and trauma of yesteryear
and a testament to the fact that he was hurt
but never folded and wound up making something cool out of it.
As a reader who enjoys biographies and memoirs
Gulman had been duped before when it comes to comedians just typing out a stand-up set and putting it out under the disguise of a memoir
he didn’t want to do that because of his respect for authors and the business of books
and his equal disdain for the venture becoming a cynical cash grab
what he wanted to accomplish within the pages and detailed reflections is offer up what he appreciates about other memoirs he’s read where the author helps the reader get into the mind of another person
“One thing that I want the book to do for people is what certain books
films and television did for me,” says Gulman
the book’s title comes from the Rush song ‘Subdivisions,’ where he says ‘Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone,’ and I want people who are misfits
who have been in situations or who can empathize with situations where they felt left out or out of their element
or in a position where they felt less seen
but it’s something I’m realizing is that there are some people who think of me as somebody who wouldn’t have had a difficult time making friends
and I want them to be able to see that it’s important to understand the backgrounds and stories of other people
because that’s just the basis of empathy and compassion.”

To say the automotive industry is currently experiencing big changes
is like saying it gets quite cold on the Canadian Prairies in the winter
It’s a truth that doesn’t need an explanation
The number of electrified or partially electrified models from legacy automakers is growing rapidly, to say nothing of upstarts that sell only electric vehicles such as Lucid, Rivian and, the global leader in EV sales, Tesla
For manufacturers that are transitioning from internal combustion to electric
While virtually all are committed to having fully electric fleets in the coming decades
the timeframes for when that will happen vary
Since the first Prius hybrid went on sale in Japan in 1997
Toyota has sold more than 20 million cars worldwide that have some form of electrification
Honda Motor said earlier this year it plans to be all electric by 2040. Nissan said last year, it will be EV only in Europe by 2030
Same for Ford.General Motors declared in 2021 that it would be fully electric by 2035 but said earlier this year that it would introduce plug-in hybrid models during the transition from gas-powered vehicles to electric due
GM sold the Chevy Volt sedan plug-in from 2010 to 2019
which sold more than 11 million vehicles worldwide in 2023
has also said it has big plans to reduce carbon dioxide (Co2) emissions – which result from the burning of fossil fuels with internal combustion engines – but it’s using a different strategy
Rather than just committing to be EV-only like its rivals
has six categories that include zero emissions from its manufacturing operations
and zero emissions life cycles for its vehicles
one of the six items is zero emissions from new vehicles
All these efforts aim to make Toyota a carbon neutral carmaker by 2050
But how it plans to get there is interesting
Toyota aims for a 90 percent Co2 emission reduction by 2050 versus 2010
the company says it will introduce more “eco-friendly” cars that fall into four main categories:
but will be gradually phased out over time
and the hydrogen fuel cell-powered Mirai sedan
The company’s luxury brand, Lexus, has a wide array of electrified models, with 11 available in the U.S., and 10 in Canada. Among these are the RZ EV crossover, and the NX and RX plug-in hybrid SUVs
I have driven most of Toyota’s electrified models at least once
but recently had some extended seat time in four new Toyotas
To celebrate its 60th anniversary in Canada
Toyota put together a cross-country road-trip
and ended three weeks later in the west in Victoria
The 5,592-mile (9,000 km) trip, which covered all 10 Canadian provinces, was divided into six legs, and enabled invited journalists to sample a selection of Toyota models over multiple days. Most of the cars used were hybrids, but the Mirai, bZ4X, and Prius Prime plug-in
with overnighting in four cities: Winnipeg
I was paired with another journalist to share driving duties
2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid XSE AWD2024 Toyota Landcruiser First Edition2025 Toyota Crown Signia Limited2024 Toyota Tacoma i-FORCE MAX TRD PRO
In addition to gathering some driving impressions and visiting several interesting places along the way while taking loads of photos
our journey also served to highlight the hybrid powertrains in each vehicle
The Camry, which is all-new for 2025, is only available in the U.S. and Canada with a hybrid powertrain. I wrote a separate 2025 Camry Hybrid review and came away impressed
especially with an average of 42 mpg (5.6 L/100 km) while driving it across the wide-open prairies
Other driving highlights include driving the Tacoma i-FORCE MAX TRD PRO on gravel roads outside Edmonton on day two. Our test truck handled the loose surfaces with ease, and delivered very secure handling, especially in 4HI 4WD. I wrote about the gas Tacoma for Tractionlife last fall
I also enjoyed my time in the Landcruiser and Crown Signia
Both are all new and even though they were pre-production units
they handled the many miles we put on them with confidence
The Landcruiser is a real head-turner in any color
One of our more interesting stops was Edmonton International Airport
which has a hydrogen storage container which it uses to fuel its fleet of seven Mirai sedans
which are used to shuttle airport staff for activities on and off-site
about 18 months ago to reduce its carbon emissions
The airport also has plans to convert one of its massive snow-clearing machines to a hybrid diesel-hydrogen vehicle.
Toyota’s partnership with Edmonton Airport mirrors sustainable projects the company has in the U.S.
Toyota has also partnered with FuelCell Energy Inc
to open a “tri-gen” generating system at its Toyota Logistics Services (TLS) vehicle processing and distribution center
which is located at the Port of Long Beach
biogas is used to generate renewable electricity and hydrogen
which processes about 200,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles per year
is the first of its kind within Toyota that’s powered completely by on-site generated renewable electricity.
Toyota is pursuing other sustainable projects on both sides of the border, including the use of solar energy to provide renewable electricity for its Alabama engine plant
and the installation a roof-top solar system that powers its Eastern Canada Parts Distribution Center
While the road to carbon neutrality by 2050 is a long one
Toyota’s wholistic approach lays out a sustainability path that is ambitious
TractionLife is about hitting the road and enjoying life
We speak to new car buyers and motor enthusiasts who prefer the unbeaten path
And the good news is it's affordable and easy to find

INGONISH, Nova Scotia -- There are great golf courses in the world far easier to find than Highlands Links Golf Club
located in Cape Breton Highlands National Park
So why have I returned for a second round in less than two years
I've got some unfinished business with a gal named "Mucklemouth Meg."
there are a lot of holes here I want another shot at
Not only are Highlands' hole names (including such gems as "Canny Slap," "Cuddie's Lugs" and "Tattie Bogle") among the best in golf
but the design by Stanley Thompson features one of the finest collections of unique holes you'll ever walk
double-dogleg par 5 tumbling narrowly through dense forest
One can only imagine playing this beast -- relatively unchanged since Thompson laid it out -- with hickories and gutta-percha balls
I'm paired up with three local members who walk this 11-kilometer excursion 3-4 times a week (and roll their eyes a bit when they notice a youngster on the first tee in a golf cart)
Their accents sound a bit like a mix of Scotland and Canadian
and their love of the game and their treasured home course is apparent
He's seen strange things happen at Highlands Links
like his son-in-law recording three hole-in-ones here in a week
He's seen Thompson's course change over time in ways few others could tell
from droughts to days of knee-high rough to redesigns to today's form
"The last 3-5 years it's in the best shape I've seen it," Hawley said
His compliments are a testament to Operations Manager Graham Hudson and his team from making this course better and better
Clearing of overgrowth has been a major point of emphasis
more clearing has been done to create incredible mountain and ocean views
and the par-4 18th now comes with an ocean view from the tee -- and some added breeze to deal with in the fairway
Current plans call for the raising of the par-3 12th hole a few feet
which is susceptible to flooding from the Clyburn River
Considering the brutal winter the Maritimes had (like just about everywhere in the north) and the fact that Parks Canada doesn't have the funds to hire a superintendent (is there another course in the top 100 without one?)
makes the fact Highlands holds its own among the best in Canada that much more remarkable
It's a 172-kilometer drive on the world famous Cabot Trail between Canada's top one-two punch: Highlands Links and Cabot Links
For those up for it (and if you've come this far
a surreal inland stretch through the lush and green Aspy Fault
plus a smattering of roadside cafes and shops
make it one of the continent's great drives
Don't rush it; allow an extra couple hours time for a few pit stops
On the western side of the island in Inverness lies Canada's first true links
with the hotel freshly opened and fescue turf still taking hold
"A little too green in some places," Director of Golf Joe Robinson noted as we walked them on a calm
with plenty of brown and its accompanying unpredictable bounces
There's even a new hole since I was here last: The par-3 12th now plays higher up
affording better views -- though Robinson notes it can be one of the windiest spots on the course now
where the construction crew was hard at work getting the course fully shaped and seeded (opening date is currently set for summer of 2015)
was manning the bulldozer on the front nine
while designer Bill Coore and his team were nearby surveying green sites and shaping progress
has been seeded and some holes on the highest ground look practically ready to go
The hole at Cabot Cliffs that's been getting attention since the project was announced is the par-3 16th: a mighty
clifftop tee shot over a tiny cove (looking down at the small sliver of beach
I wonder if anyone will ever try to go down there and play their ball) to a green defended by huge
Thompson's "Devil's Cauldron" at Banff Springs
As the course heads back along the coast towards the south and town
The par-5 sixth hole (one of six par 5s -- there are also six par 3s on the routing)
is shaping up to be the perhaps the best hole of the front nine
2 in ScoreGolf's latest Top 100 in Canada and no
42 in Golf Digest's inaugural World's Top 100 ranking)
we're comparing apples to appleseeds right now
but I'm not ready to proclaim Cliffs as a slam-dunk favorite
particularly around the turn and down the finishing stretch
feeling all too Scottish as it plays beside the heart of town
The Cliffs will earn plenty of magazine covers with a few holes
but the bar is quite high at Whitman's original course in town
If you want to break up the drive between Ingonish and Inverness, stop off at a little local club in Cheticamp, Le Portage Golf Club
and don't let the entrance passing some warehouse-looking buildings fool you
On the other side of the clubhouse is nothing but a green expanse of mountain backdrops
wild roses and berries growing just off the fairways

Analyzing a golf course need not be complicated
One simple but effective way to judge a design is by the quality of the course’s property
with many contending it has the most formidable hazards and sophisticated green complexes in golf
Throw in a wonderful routing that hopscotches from one island of turf to the next across the rolling
sandy landscape and you have a course that hasn’t budged from the No
it is only so because it is true: Pick Pine Valley’s “worst” three holes and they are demonstrably better than the worst three holes of any other course on this list

and the bunkers themselves were restored to their previous immense scale

Its old-school features include cross hazards and medium-size greens
Open was reminded that there is no substitute for hitting fairways and greens as thick rough remains a component of the course’s challenge just as it was in 1913

It’s been a rough ride for cannabis investors
Will the new year bring better price action
Here are my top eight predictions for the cannabis sector for 2025
and it seems probable that rescheduling could happen in 2025
The background: The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recommended that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Department of Justice move cannabis to Schedule III from Schedule I under the Controlled Substances Act
This would be a big sector catalyst. IRS rule 280E prohibits the deduction of operating expenses against revenue from the sale of Schedule I substances
moving cannabis to Schedule III would neutralize this rule
adding tens of millions of dollars to cannabis company cash flow and earnings
An administrative law judge inside the DEA will hold hearings on the pros and cons starting January 21 through early March
the DEA is procedurally designated as an advocate for this change
The bias seems strong enough that cannabis companies and advocates have been filing legal challenges to get the DEA removed from the hearings process
the DEA seems like a good example of the “deep state” opposing the policy objectives of elected officials
Trump has a low opinion of deep-state actors
That sets up the DEA for a knockdown by the Trump administration
I put the odds of rescheduling by year’s end at 70%
Banks are generally prohibited from serving cannabis companies
Cannabis advocates have been unable to convert the bill into law
If Democrats failed to get this through when they controlled one or both sides of Congress
why would approval be any more likely under a Republican-controlled Congress
incoming leaders of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus Rep
Ilhan Omar (D-MN) have solid records as cannabis reform advocates
Titus says she wants to help the federal government “catch up” to states by advancing cannabis policy reform
She cosponsored legislation to de-schedule cannabis
it won’t stack up against Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD)
who says he is “not a fan” of SAFER Banking
Or House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) who opposes cannabis reform
Trump endorsed SAFER Banking during the election campaign
Trump also backed Florida’s initiative to legalize recreational cannabis
But it is not clear he wants to spend political capital getting SAFER Banking through Congress
I put the odds of SAFER banking getting approved this year at 15%
Pennsylvania hold-outs on legalization cave
The legislative pathway for this is uncertain as we enter 2025
Josh Shapiro (D) says he will once again support cannabis legalization in his budget address in February
“All the states around us have approved or are in the process of approving recreational marijuana,” says Shapiro
“Folks are going across state borders to purchase it and paying taxes to those states
They should be keeping their money right here in Pennsylvania.”
States with medical use (like Pennsylvania) that convert to recreational-use legalization see cannabis sales ramp up sharply
states often then greenlight lots of stores
which increases supply and puts downward pressure on prices
The upside is that ongoing state legalization intensifies the cultural momentum behind the normalization of cannabis use
This puts pressure on federal-level politicians and agencies to enact reform
banking reform and decriminalization or legalization would be real catalysts for cannabis stocks
I put the odds of Pennsylvania legalizing rec-use at 75%
states continue to permit lots of new stores after they legalize
The additional supply puts downward pressure on prices – even in surrounding states
When stores started selling rec-use cannabis in August 2024 (medical was already legal)
Prices dropped to $7.01 per gram by year’s end
says the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control
The average price of cannabis flower in Oregon continued to fall sharply last year
hitting an all-time low of $3.51 per gram in December
according to the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission
That was the third straight month of price declines
when the state first began opening rec-use stores in 2016
Prices have also fallen sharply in Michigan and Massachusetts
hitting $4 and $4.50 per gram respectively
cannabis prices fall so much that it is no longer cost-effective to fund new supply
Companies that figured out how to lean out enough to survive in that environment will be the winners
I put the odds of further price compression this year at 95%
but the “buzzy” new product in the cannabis sector this year will be intoxicating drinks containing THC derived from hemp
And intoxicating hemp-based drinks have a market advantage in that they are technically legal
Federal lawmakers accidentally created a hemp loophole in the 2018 Farm Bill
California has banned intoxicating hemp products
hemp drinks won’t really contribute much to revenue growth this year
hemp drinks will just be another subcategory of edibles
which place third as a favored delivery mechanism
I put the odds of underwhelming hemp drink revenue growth this year at 80%
This will be important to cannabis investors because it supports the ongoing cultural momentum behind the normalization of cannabis use
This puts pressure on politicians to enact reform
We’ve already seen the National Football League (NFL)
the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)
the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) loosen the rules around cannabis use and testing
the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) are OK with CBD product partnerships and endorsements
Facing a shortage of police force recruits
wants to loosen restrictions on past cannabis use for applicants
Recruits are now disqualified if they used cannabis in the past three years
“Past cannabis use is not a consideration in Virginia
so officers who can’t work in Montgomery County go across the river to Fairfax County
where they can work,” points out Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich
Nevada and Arizona have all loosened cannabis use rules for police recruits in recent years
I put the odds of these trends continuing in 2025 at 95%
That’s been the trend among people from all age groups and political parties
Even traditional holdouts like older conservatives are coming around
This matters to cannabis investors because sooner or later
politicians respond to the wishes of voters
both presidential candidates supported all the key reforms: Rescheduling
I put the odds of public support for legalization moving higher this year at 100%
Drawing on its asynchronous nature as an asset class
cannabis stocks finish the year as one of the market’s top-performing sectors
especially if there is significant progress on rescheduling and state-level legalization

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is one of many perspectives on Ponce de Leon and the discovery of Florida and developments like this comes out almost every year at this time
Send us your thoughts to letters@staugustine.com
Of all the outlandish myths about Florida's outlandish history
one of the most stubborn holds that Ponce de Leon discovered it in 1513 when he was searching for the Fountain of Youth
But evidence compiled by a Florida Keys map collector
a South Florida archaeologist and a Naples ocean engineer further debunks the tall tale of the Spanish conquistador whose name graces textbooks
statues and the most popular tourist site in St
Ponce de Leon may have named the place then known as Bimini — which he thought was an island — after the Easter time "Feast of Flowers," but he was not the first European to land in La Florida
The three authors of a new book released Friday
"The Florida Keys: A History Through Maps," present a compelling theory that Floridians ought to be naming more stuff in the Sunshine State in honor of John Cabot
the Italian explorer who sailed to the coast of North America in 1497 and claimed it for King Henry VII of England
Some historians believe Cabot was the first European to find Florida when
after failing to locate a Northwest Passage to China
he journeyed so far south from Canada that he could see Cuba to the east
"That would put Cabot off the Florida Keys long before Ponce de Leon got here and named them the Martyrs," said Brian Schmitt of Marathon
an avid map collector and owner of the oldest real estate company in the Keys
"Lots of what we've been taught about Ponce de Leon is fanciful creation passed down through the centuries
Maps show Florida was well known by Europeans before Ponce de Leon arrived."
Archaeologist Bob Carr's analysis of conch shells he unearthed in Fort Lauderdale supports what the maps illustrate
"Floridians need to stop living under the illusion that Ponce was our famous founder," Carr said
"We need to get beyond the tourism hoax of the Fountain of Youth and learn about our complicated history."
Schmitt's most prized acquisition is the 1511 Peter Martyr Map made by the prolific Italian historian who worked for the royal court of Spain
Peter Martyr D'Anghiera wrote the first accounts of explorations in Central and South America in a gossipy style
He interviewed all the intrepid mariners of the day
The map shows detail of the Florida coastline and what clearly appear to be the Keys and the Dry Tortugas north of the islands of Cuba and Hispaniola
Schmitt purchased the map from a San Diego dealer for $250,000
it's the Holy Grail — the earliest attainable map of the New World," Schmitt said
His presentation of the map and book on Friday in downtown Miami was originally planned to coincide with the Miami Map Fair
which was cancelled because of coronavirus concerns
"But it is only about 8-1/2 by 11 inches in size
with some print-through Latin script on the back side
"Maps are the confluence of art and science
I tell visitors if you can identify the one in my collection that's worth more than all the others combined
Two other maps buttress the anti-Ponce argument: The 1500 Juan de la Cosa map depicting vast lands north of Cuba shows British flags planted along the east coast of the U.S.
which would dovetail with the theory that England's claim to the original 13 American colonies was a byproduct of Cabot's discoveries
created in 1502 and called the Cantino Planisphere
depicts the peninsula of Florida with a remarkably accurate rendering of its inlets and bays
smuggled the map out of Portugal when European countries were in competition for claims to New World territory
The original was found hundreds of years later being used as a screen at a butcher shop
this geographic information was jealously guarded
allowing Spain and Portugal to maintain an advantage in trade and colonial expansion over other European countries," Schmitt said
describing how maps were pieced together like puzzles
as cartographers compiled sketches and descriptions of the coastline made from the deck or crow's nest or from expeditions on shore
"It wasn't until 1600 that they had instruments for more accurate measurements."
co-author Carr presents an archaeological argument that adds to the body of evidence that Ponce didn't discover Florida
who excavated the prehistoric Tequesta Indian villages at the mouth of the Miami River
discovered a mound of 22 conch shells when he was surveying land at the Bonnet House Museum and Gardens in Fort Lauderdale in 1984
He found uncharacteristic gaping holes in the middle of the shells and one with a distinctive thin metal blade hole
Radiocarbon tests showed the shells dated from the late 15th century
"These can't have been opened by Spanish explorers because the Spanish had already been in the Caribbean by that time and knew how to open conch shells efficiently
the way the indigenous people opened them by piercing a hole in the crown
severing the tendon attachment and extracting the conch for a meal," he said
"Whoever did this really labored to bust them open and eat them."
Carr concluded the shells were proof of a European landing that pre-dated Ponce
"Christopher Columbus knew how to open conch shells and Ponce had traveled with Columbus
These were opened by people who were not Spanish and had never been in the Caribbean but who likely arrived in South Florida from the north along the Atlantic coast or had sailed directly from Europe," Carr said
Among Schmitt's collection of 1,000 maps is the first map of New Providence in the Bahamas
the only full copy of what is likely the first English map of the West Indies or Spanish Main
and the only copy of one of the first maps to name the Tortugas and Los Martires (the original name of the Keys)
"I've been collecting for 25 years and my focus is on the Keys
the areas where I've been boating and diving my whole life," said Schmitt
His family moved to the Keys from Detroit in 1955 and started a real estate company
"I grew up in the real estate business and developed a sense of the land and a love for the islands."
The second part of the new book is about the mapping of the Keys
whose skill as a cartographer earned him the title of Surveyor General of the New World for England
One of his most unusual printed charts — perhaps a precursor to the climate change projections of the 21st century — depicted Florida 10,000 years ago when water levels were lower in order to demonstrate that the Keys were part of Florida and refute Spain's claim that the Keys were geologically linked to Cuba
"Spain tried to claim the Keys as part of Cuba when Spain traded Florida to England," Schmitt said
De Brahm wrote incredibly detailed journals about the Gulfstream and Florida's flora and fauna
of which he had heard "instances that they have attacked Children without the House
and carried them off the Land into the Water
but cannot vouch for its Truth." And he warned that "Tempests will be seen more than in any other part of the Globe."
Of the Keys he said: "None of the islands is inhabited by any of the human species
but constantly visited by the English from New Providence
and birds: of the latter a variety exist on the islands and about Cape Sable
amongst which is peculiarly a large red bird
which measures six feet from the toe to its bill's end
and has its maxillary motion on its upper part
as on that of a parrot) and is called flamingo."
Maps help explain why the Ponce de Leon legend has persisted
"The most chronicled story was Ponce's story," Schmitt said
They owned the place and they publicized the history they wanted believed
Because of a mistake by Martin Waldseemuller," Schmitt said of the 1507 world map by the German cartographer that used the name America for the first time
"Vespucci exaggerated his accomplishments and Waldseemuller said we might as well name it after Amerigo and it took on a life of its own
"In subsequent versions — I have a 1513 Waldseemuller map — America is gone and it's called Terra Incognita."
Other historians believe Gaspar and Miguel Corte-Real
"The argument against Sebastian Cabot is that he made things up
And nobody really knows exactly what happened to John Cabot," Schmitt said
"There' s no written record of his voyages
You find different versions of the same events when you're doing historical research
so you've got to find the most credible one
Maybe I'm too confident in Peter Martyr but I don't share those reservations about Sebastian
Ponce de Leon did land in Florida in 1513 but somewhere near Cape Canaveral
recorded interaction with the native "Chequesta" people at the mouth of the Miami River
rounded Cape Florida and headed north up the Gulf coast
where he was chased away near Fort Myers by Calusa Indians
"Having received a charter from the King of Spain to colonize the land
Ponce certainly had prior knowledge of Florida
not to be confused with today's small island in the Bahamas," said Todd Turrell
co-author of the book with Schmitt and Carr
who had the charter for Cuba and the Bahamas
was angry that the Beimeni/Bimini charter had not been issued to them
a fact confirmed by Spanish explorer Alonso Alvarez de Pineda
who noted by hand on his 1519 chart of the Gulf of Mexico: 'Florida
Ponce returned to the Gulf coast eight years later for another attempt at settlement with two ships crammed full of 200 people and 50 horses
Near present-day Marco Island he was attacked by Calusa tribesmen and hit in the leg with an arrow
He retreated to Cuba where he died from an infection of his wound

had been misled to eschew butter for margarine in the name of health in the early 1900s and then later found margarine an acceptable butter replacement during World War II when butter became a scarce commodity

Some of these names sit on grocery store shelves nationwide while others have long been secrets of professional kitchens and bakeries
Those who earned the highest rankings found the sweet spot of being easy enough to purchase without being too widely available to where purchasing the product doesn't feel as special
memorable flavor without being too funky for swapping in your favorite recipes
While Vermont's Cabot has been a dairy aisle staple for years (the Barefoot Contessa herself is a fan)
you may be surprised to know the brand also has a premium line of butter
Made in line with European standards at 83% butterfat
this extra-creamy offering is slow churned for extra richness
While reviews of Cabot butter are overwhelmingly positive
the brand doesn't quite hold up in comparison to the other fancy options from around the world on this list
It's a top pick from your local supermarket
but it doesn't have the complexity of flavor that several of these international (and Vermont-based) brands offer

Cabot typically retails for around $4 per pound
One of two Scandinavian brands on this list, Lurpak is based in Denmark and seeks to combine the best of traditional methods and modern technology. They must be doing something right because the brand's Salted Butter variety earned the "Best of Class" award at the 2020 World Champion Cheese Contest
Smjör is an Icelandic butter that is made from one of the most unique breeds of cows in the world, as there has hardly been any more importation of cattle since Iceland first became a settlement in the 10th century (via The Reykjavik Grapevine)
The pasture-raised cows that produce this beloved butter are so isolated on the island that they are free from most diseases found in other countries around the world
Though Smjör is becoming more commonly found in the U.S., thanks to brands like Whole Foods Market and Amazon
and is one of the lowest in price on this list
the brand's special cattle have earned it a higher spot
While it isn't as "fancy" as some of the other contenders
Smjör is still a great pick for elevating your favorite recipes
The brand can be found in Salted and Unsalted varieties
Smjör typically retails around $6 per 8 ounces
Dedicated home cooks and frozen dinner enthusiasts alike seem to know about Kerrygold
The Irish butter brand has been an explosive hit since it first arrived in the U.S
more than 20 years ago and has become the gold standard for supermarket butter brands
While Kerrygold has something of a cult following and is more expensive than your average butter stick, we ranked the now-iconic yellow European-style butter here at No. 17 because of its vast accessibility; according to Bloomberg
Kerrygold is America's second-most popular butter brand after Land O'Lakes
The fact that Kerrygold is more commonly found than other butters on our list keeps it from feeling like a true fancy option these days
Kerrygold can be found in Unsalted and Salted stick and tub varieties
and the brand also features a range of specialty flavors (including a choice of olive or canola oil) in tubs
Kerrygold typically retails around $4 per 8 ounces
This butter is truly a statement piece for the table. Beppino Occelli's products are hand-embossed with a unique shape and wrapped in wax paper
But is there more style here than substance
This nearly-pure white butter has an ultra-creamy taste that lends almost sweet
Depending on where you shop for this brand
Beppino Occeli's butter can range in price from $9 to $12 per 9 ounces
Plugrá is one of many European-style butters on this list. According to the French-American Cultural Foundation
European-style butter differs from your average American brand as it features at least 82% butterfat — 2% more than most butters found in North America and often in the UK as well
Many European-style butters (particularly the French ones) are also cultured
which means a fermentation process occurs before churning
This is why these products have a distinct tang
as it has a high percentage of butterfat but the flavor isn't as overpowering as many cultured butters can be
Though Plugrá is modeled after European traditions and standards
and it's offered in Salted and Unsalted varieties at the grocery store
the brand offers a 1-pound Unsalted variety for professional kitchens
we placed it low on the list for its wide accessibility that keeps it from feeling fancy and the lack of transparency in the production process in comparison to the others on this list
Plugrà typically retails around $2.50 per 8 ounces
Ploughgate Creamery is another heralded American dairy brand from Vermont
and it's especially famous for producing cultured butters with unique specialty flavors
Butter maker and Ploughgate founder Marisa Mauro is widely celebrated in the culinary world for her old-school approach to dairy
Fresh Vermont cream is made the European way by adding live
active cultures for a taste that's almost cheese-like
Mauro and Ploughgate certainly deserve high marks for producing a show-stopping ingredient; Terroir Review described the salted version as having "punctuations of flowery crystals" that "provide a welcome crunch." Still
the butter may be best suited for more adventurous home cooks
Ploughgate Creamery's butter comes in Unsalted
The brand also produces ghee and baking staples
All of these items are available via Ploughgate Creamery's online store as well as through select retailers nationwide
Payson Breton is made in Brittany
which is famous for its star-quality dairy products
Though the brand's butter is only 80% butterfat (more similar to American than other European companies)
it has received wide acclaim for its salty-sweetness
The cows that make Payson Breton's butter are part of a cooperative of family farms and the company prides itself in an entirely local production
Their products go through a fermentation process to get the traditional
Payson Breton offers a wide range of butters depending on your salt preference with Sea Salt
it hits a bit lower than the other French butters on this list
as other contenders seemed to have more acclaim and more complex flavors one might expect from a fancy product
Payson Breton's butter can be found for as low as $5 per 8.82 ounces
New Zealand's Lewis Road Creamery is a shining example of the quality butter produced on this beautiful island-country
The brand is so confident in its product that it claims to produce the best butter in the world
It's also one of the least expensive offerings on this list
though still more expensive than your average supermarket butter
and through several other regional grocers) and is at a middle-range price point for fancy butter
we ranked it in the middle of the pack simply in comparison to the other impressive contenders on this list
Lewis Road Creamery typically retails around $6 per 8 ounces
Founded in 1984, Vermont Creamery is one of the most widely adored American butter brands in the food world for its French-style tanginess and high fat content
The cream for the brand's butter comes from a local Vermont co-op (first established in 1919) that includes cow's milk from 350 family farms that produce antibiotic- and growth hormone-free milk
Vermont Creamery's cultured butter offering is an excellent grocery store pick that will enhance the flavor of your favorite baked goods, dinner dishes, and even your morning toast
11 for its wide availability that may make it seem more like an everyday butter instead of a special ingredient that's worth the extra bucks
It can be found in Cultured Butter with Sea Salt and Cultured Unsalted sticks
as well as Sea Salt Cultured butter in tubs
Vermont Creamery butter typically retails around $3 per 8 ounces
What happens when you combine the creams and milks from family-run farms in Parma and Reggio Emilia — Italy's most iconic cheese destinations — to make butter
which is made with 83% butterfat for some supreme dairy that will have you looking for new ways to use it
Delitia Butter of Parma can be found for as low as $8 per 8 ounces
The French take their butter as seriously as their wine, and the country has a special Appellation d'Origine Protégée (AOP) designation that highlights a brand's dedication to certain traditional methods (via La Cuisine Paris) as well as the specific
prestigious regions they source milk and cream from
where Normandy's finest cows have been producing famed dairy products for four centuries
It's available to purchase on Amazon
as well as through some high-end specialty food stores and online retailers
this ingredient comes at a high price and compared to some of the other butters on this list
Mère can be found for as low as $7 per 8.82 ounces
Atlanta's Banner Butter has finally put the South on the map for small-batch cultured butter made the old-school way
almost cheese-like flavor" and a unique texture that makes it perfect for finishing sauces and dressing seafood
Banner Butter is made the European way with a higher butterfat percentage than U.S
standards and utilizes a special churning method that allows cream to ripen and good bacteria to populate
The butter-making processes at Banner take a whopping 20 times longer than commercial butter methods
but you can taste the dedication to quality
We ranked Banner here for its dedication to the craft
and accessibility (it will be easier to find in-store in the eastern half of the U.S
as well as various specialty and seasonal flavors
Banner Butter typically retails around $7 per 5 ounces
Lescure is another fabulous French option that's full of history and deep complexity of flavor
The brand's products are part of the AOP Charentes-Poitou (one of the country's Protected Designation of Origin certifications) and features a range of butter products offered in 80-84% butterfat
The cream and milk come from cows that graze across a rich, nutrient-dense terroir (a French word for soil
which accounts for Lescure's unique flavor
Lescure has a seven-step production process that includes 16-hour fermentation and hand-kneading stages
It's pretty easy to find the brand nowadays via online specialty food retailers and some upscale specialty food stores
Lescure offers a nice range of options for every type of home cook and culinary project with Salted and Unsalted varieties across various fat percentages
Lescure typically retails around $10 per 8.8 ounces
lies an aptly named dairy-lover's destination called Animal Farm
This place sells highly coveted butter for $60 a pound (before shipping) and rarely goes on sale to the public
Most of it goes to Chef Thomas Keller and his restaurant group and a local co-op in Middlebury
so if you get the chance to purchase some (or take a trip to The French Laundry)
Produced from a herd of 10 Jersey dairy cows
Saxelby Cheesemongers sells Animal Farm's cultured butter online that features a whopping 87% butterfat
plus a bout of hand-kneading on a wooden table
makes for a spectacularly sweet cream butter that is worth the hype
due to the unpredictability of when the butter becomes available (up your chances by signing up for email updates from Saxelby!) and the sky-high price point
Animal Farm loses a few marks for being a bit too fancy for the average home cook
Échiré prides itself on using the ancient practice of churning butter in wooden churns
and it is one of the last remaining dairies to continue this tradition
it's also part of the AOP Charentes-Poitou and received the Prix d'Excellence Française in 2015
Though it's an excellent all-purpose butter that works especially well for baking
Échiré is one of the most expensive on this list
and we think there are a few other options that offer more to home cooks in terms of flavor and price
The brand offers Doux (unsalted) and Demi-Sel ("lightly salted") varieties in sticks
Échiré typically retails around $10.50 per 8.8 ounces
The English county of Devon may be recognizable to those who love British baking or enjoy the English afternoon tea tradition. But while Devon is famous for its clotted creams, the region also makes top-quality butter. Arguably the best butter in Britain, Devon Cream Company's golden
silky smooth butter is truly delightful and worthy of a top ranking
The cows that make this fancy butter graze along the British countryside before their milk is churned in the traditional fashion and the butter is wrapped in a golden foil. The butter is only offered in a Lightly Salted variety, which may not be a top pick for bakers, but it's certainly worth pairing with a favorite loaf of bread
the lack of varieties is what kept it from inching even higher on this list of the best fancy butters
Devon Cream Company typically retails around $10 per 8 ounces
Beloved by names such as David Leibowitz and Gwyneth Paltrow, Pascal Beillevaire is not only a prestigious French butter brand, but it also a top fromagerie to visit in Paris, according to Goop
where the milk is sourced and butter produced
and Pascal is passionate about bringing his sublime dairy products to consumers
whether that be by bike or by hand in his shop
make for a unique collection of products to try
Pascal Beillevaire's butter can be found for as low as $9.60 per 125g
France's Bordier is often considered by many in the culinary world to be among the best butter brands on the market
This is because of Bordier's determination to return to traditional methods
where the butter is kneaded by hand on a wooden table instead of being processed with factory equipment
This means it takes 12 times longer to produce a batch of Bordier in comparison to the average commercial brand
which is famous for its top-tier dairy cows
Bordier's butter is a tough find in the U.S., but it is becoming increasingly easier to find depending on where you live. Upscale specialty foods stores are your best bet for in-person shopping, while some high-end online retailers have also begun carrying the brand (just watch out for sky-high international shipping rates)
Between prestige and exclusivity in buying options
Bordier secures the second-highest spot on our list
Bordier typically retails around $14 per 125g
One of many on this list that have been thought of as the best butter in the world, Rodolphe Le Meunier is one of the most highly regarded brands out there and is adored by the one-and-only Nancy Silverton (via Saveur)
Named after the famed fifth-generation affineur (a French word for a cheese ager and purveyor) Rodolphe Le Menuier
who produces the butter in the Loire Valley
His team sources ingredients from local French farms
Between rave reviews from experts and home cooks alike, the middle of the pack price point, and level of accessibility, this one earns top marks. The brand offers its butter in Unsalted and Salted varieties, and it can mostly be found online via high-end food retailers. Rodolphe Le Meunier can be found for as low as $8.99 per 250 grams, or 9 ounces.
Jessica Fletcher: That's odd.

Magician Cesareo Pelaez's greatest trick was motivating generations of performers to stage "Le Grand David'' at the Cabot Street Cinema Theater in Beverly for more than 35 years
which the Guinness Book of World Records termed the longest consecutively running stage magic show in the world
A quirky throwback to the golden age of magic that Mr
the show was born in 1977 when he was teaching psychology at Salem State College and imparting the theories of his mentor during his graduate studies at Brandeis University
who proposed the hierarchy of needs theory
publisher of Las Vegas-based Magic Magazine
"He comes to America and he has this dream of doing a show
These young people join this dream with him
and they manage to keep that show successful for the next 35 years
There are no shows like that anywhere else in the world
acclaimed in the magic industry for performing in the long-running show as Marco the Magi
died of congestive heart failure Saturday in the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers
A charismatic psychology instructor at Salem State for 24 years
Pelaez was both a stern patriarch and nurturing therapist who helped people discover their talents
"He used to say what we do when we perform on Sundays is make an appointment with our best selves,'' said magician David Bull
who performs as Le Grand David in the show and began as Mr
"This idea that you leave all of your daily grievances
reach inside and perform with what each individual thought of as their higher self
Pelaez wore opulent robes as he made tables levitate and enchanted audiences with his Cuban accent
He was a master of a classic illusion involving linking rings
His mysterious routine could shift into vaudeville as he tossed off his robes to reveal a 1920s bathing suit
who owns the Magic Art Studio and the Mini Museum of Magic in Watertown
attended hundreds of "Le Grand David'' performances while entertaining visitors
"He was a miracle man when it came to putting that show together,'' Goulet recalled
He would dig into that person's mannerisms and find out what they excelled in,'' he said
Pelaez described his theater troupe as an embodiment of Maslow's theories:
needed to understand what Abraham Maslow wrote at the end of his book 'Toward a Psychology of Being': 'It is not adaptation to disability that we must strive for in redefining health
It's transcendence of disability.' And we are learning together about health as transcendence of environment
"The artistic whole is the result of the relationships between the members of the ensemble and their relationships with me
What they perceive is the truth of our relationships with each other - that creates the fiber of the show
The fiber of the show is what we are at a cellular
Pelaez was the son of a businessman who immigrated to Cuba from Spain and ran an import-export business
Pelaez could recall sitting on his father's lap while they watched magician Fu Manchu
a Dutch conjurer known for shows bursting with color
Pelaez began staging shows for playmates with his older sister Elisa playing piano
He graduated from Universidad Central de Las Villas in Cuba with an undergraduate degree in psychology and was studying to become a diplomat when the Cuban revolution began
Pelaez took a summer job as a counselor at Camp Greylock in Western Massachusetts
where a camper's father helped him get a job in a furniture factory in Keene
He spoke little English and later told friends that he was ostracized by the factory workers
Pelaez later got a job teaching Spanish in a public school in Keene
he wrote a letter to Maslow at Brandeis about his plight
Maslow offered him work as a teaching assistant
He was separated from the love of his life when he fled Cuba
"He reconnected with her after 55 years when she was a grandmother,'' Bull said
they would have married if not for the revolution.''
Pelaez was celebrated for spearheading the group that bought and preserved the Cabot Street Cinema Theater
His theater troupe also bought and rejuvenated an antique playhouse nearby called the Larcom Theater in 1985
A spring season of "Le Grand David'' is scheduled to open in April
"The guy was terrific,'' said Mayor William F
"He was one of the finest minds I've ever encountered
He had all of those folks associated with the magic show wanting to do the best they could every performance
Pelaez received numerous awards and honors from groups in the magic world
"He was an incredible mentor,'' said Katie Bull of Beverly
"He had this knack of providing opportunities for people within the theater experience that fit all these different people's abilities and allowed for incredible growth.''

Changes are coming into Cabot Circus and Broadmead this year.(Image: Hammerson)The main shopping area in Bristol is set for various changes over the coming year
Broadmead has long led the way for shopping in Bristol
especially when the city’s first large shopping centre was built
In 1991, the Galleries were created and changed the way the area was felt
more shops and reasons to visit Broadmead were to be found
leading to the creation of Cabot Circus in 2008
including the state of the car parks and nearby developments
offices and hundreds of new homes and new student accommodation
Whether demolition begins this year is to be seen
however the visible changes to what visitors will see will be apparent as the year goes on
Since the plans were submitted and plans slowly progressed
various brands have left the shopping centre in preparation for the inevitable
What we do know is that the demolition will happen and that means that time is running out for the stores that are located within the Galleries
In recent days the Damaged Society has shut its doors
which will be followed by the other brands making their way out of what was once the most notable shopping centre in the city
These changes will continue to roll-out in the following year
but this is just the beginning of the new brands
It will be located next to the Santander bank
A new Odeon cinema will be located within the former Showcase Cinema unit, bringing back a cinema experience to Cabot Circus. It will also be joined by a new leisure brand and a restaurant
Perhaps the biggest notable change coming to Cabot Circus is the arrival of Marks & Spencers at the former House of Frasers. It is scheduled to open in autumn of this year and will cost £21 million
There may be other brands that will come to Cabot Circus as there are various empty lots dotted around Quakers Friars as well as the shopping centre
TGI Fridays and Coal units remain vacant following the brand’s exits
The former Debenhams will be converted into a new skate park.(Image: Bristol Live)The former Debenhams building will be demolished
and developers hope to do so either this year or next year
a skate park will be set up within the former department store which is set to open in March
Other businesses included in the project include Wheelscape skatepark designers
The project is led by Campus Skateboarding
a not-for-profit which aims to get people into skating via indoor skate parks
The skate park will be there for the short-term, rather than the long-term, however. Tower blocks will be built in place of the Debenhams building, the tallest of which will be 28 storeys high
Broadmead could also change in a variety of other ways, the impact of which would be felt in the long-term. There are plans to pedestrianise the area
Developments around Broadmead could also change how the area is seen. The former Bank of England building, on the corner of Castle Park, is soon to be demolished as the St Mary le Port development begins to take shape
Similar to the former Debenhams building, the former Premier Inn at the Bearpit is in the process of being demolished to make way for new tower blocks. The hotel has slowly been shrinking in height as the process has been slowly making progress.
which was voted for in 2016 and which became effective on 1 January 2021
has affected the British economy through three main channels
temporarily for goods and more lastingly for services
Business investment has declined since 2016 against a backdrop of uncertainty
The strain on the labour market has been heightened by lower employment levels for EU nationals
The United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union (EU)
which was voted for by referendum in June 2016
the UK left the single market on 1 January 2021
Brexit has had an impact on the United Kingdom’s economy and has dampened its growth potential through three main channels
owing to the reintroduction of non-tariff barriers
the UK’s trade in goods with the EU fell in 2021 to a greater extent than trade with non-EU countries
although the impact only seems to have been temporary
trade in services with the EU has been more lastingly affected
especially for financial and transportation services
business investment in most sectors has stalled since the 2016 referendum following a period of strong growth
Due to the effects of both Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic
it was more than 20% below the level that it would have reached had it maintained the momentum seen between Q1 2010 and Q2 2016 (see Chart)
restrictions on the employment of EU nationals have reduced the labour supply at a time when the UK’s labour market is under great strain
Employment of EU workers has levelled off since 2016 whereas it had rocketed during the years prior to the referendum
This has forced British employers to have greater recourse to non-European labour

The shopping centre had been a long time coming and there was a lot of excitement in the city when it was finally ready for business on September 25
after a decade of planning and £500m of investment
headed by a 90-strong colourful troupe of music makers and dancers who acted as pied pipers
led people into the centre to witness a spectacular circus-themed aerial display as part of the daytime opening ceremony
Thousands of shoppers clamoured to be among the first to get a glimpse inside Bristol’s swankiest new shopping destination.
It was a Thursday too, so it looks like at least some people took the day off work to be there.
There were performers scaling the glass roof and abseiling down the walls of the centre in a daring theatrical programme directed by Mark Murphy, an award-winning director and filmmaker, who had delivered the opening ceremonies for the Manchester Commonwealth Games and Liverpool’s Capital of Culture programme.
Stars of stage, screen and catwalk were there too, with model Yasmin Le Bon, wife of Duran Duran’s Simon, cutting the ribbon at House of Fraser.
At a pre-opening fashion show the night before, she strutted her stuff to a DJ soundtrack provided by singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor and her husband Richard Jones.
Tom Fletcher and Danny Poynter from McFly were at the Zavvi store signing CDs and burlesque performer Dita Von Teese was there to officially open Harvey Nichols.
Our photo gallery relives that day in all its glory, showing how Bristol really can pull out all the stops when it comes to throwing an unforgettable party.

Peter Stone and the SVU detectives really made a big mess of things in “Sunk Cost Fallacy,” the April 18
The first scene showed Peter Stone at the Bayview Mental Health Facility, talking to his sister’s doctor. She has developed tardive dyskinesia, a condition caused by the long-term use of antipsychotic medications
Stone has to decide whether to give her a bigger dose of the medications or take her off them completely
He wants the doctor to make the final call but the doctor insists that Stone has to do it
we assume they showed that to demonstrate why Stone might be making irrational decisions
drove out from Brooklyn for the occasion and they are waiting for Jules
Nick gets a call from Jules and asks how far away she is
He hears a man voice telling her to shut up and she tells Nick this guy is going to kill her
Nick is so agitated he can hardly remember what happened during the day or whether he even kissed Jules and Ruby goodbye
asking her to pick something up and she texted back “NP.” Nick’s mother
Olivia Benson that stands for “no problem.” The detectives trace Jules’ cell phone to a Bergen County
A bag containing her cell phone and wallet is found nearby
Sonny Carisi figures she had to have bought that can within 10 miles of the mall so they find the right gas station
A man bought it and he conveniently paid with a credit card
When he is asked if anyone might have had it in for him or Jules
he denies it but his mother fingers Jorge Garcia
their house was broken into and Vera is sure it was Jorge
A neighbor also saw Jules and Jorge arguing
A chat with Jorge reveals that Jules paid Jorge behind Nick’s back
She looked mad because he told her that he saw Nick with another woman
the girl with the purple hair Jorge saw Nick with
She thinks that Nick is a widower with a dead wife and daughter
Amanda Rollins that her brother-in-law has a “dark side,” recounting an incident where he “jokingly” said his life would be better if Jules was dead
The blood inside the car is a match for Jules
They find out that Nick was out at his country club
an area with a swamp around it at midnight and start searching the swamp for bodies
They get Nick back down at the station and lay all this out for him but he angrily denies murdering his wife and daughter… well
Benson and Stone are watching this interrogation
he tells Olivia to arrest Nick for murder because “a night in Rikers” will make him talk
they lock Nick up and he gets the crap beat out of him
When the detectives get security footage from the mall
they see the man who threw Jules’ cell phone and wallet in the trash bin
He was kind enough not to hide his face and facial recognition helps them find out who he is
hoping he will lead them to Jules and Ruby
SVU’s very own former Assistant District Attorney
Benson is shocked to find out that Cabot is now working on the other side of the fence
helping domestic violence victims disappear to escape their abusers
That presents quite a dilemma with Nick in jail for killing his wife and daughter
There isn’t even any solid evidence of domestic violence
Report this information and get Nick out of jail ASAP
She goes with Cabot to meet Jules Hunter and hear her big bad Nick stories
Benson is not impressed until Jules says one morning she overslept
Nick made the coffee himself and poured a cup of it on her stomach
She did go to the hospital but didn’t tell anyone that her husband caused the injury
Benson gets Stone to downgrade the murder charge against Nick to assault
Stone storms angrily into Benson’s office to inform her that Nick got out on bail and is suing her
the police department and the City of New York for $50 million dollars for false arrest and imprisonment
intentional infliction of emotional distress and more
A motion for accelerated discovery was granted and Benson gets to be deposed first
Nick’s attorney forced Benson to admit that she knew Jules and Ruby were alive and that she charged Nick with assault based upon what Jules told her
Liv!” Benson said she could not because she was under oath
Cabot wanted to know if Benson thought God would smite her if she lied: “This entire ‘tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth’ is a load of crap that we tell people so that they think the criminal justice system gives a damn about them.’ Benson replied: “What happened to you?” and Cabot said: “I opened my eyes.”
Stone and the detectives took a backseat to the allegations against Nick
Jules filed for divorce and Cabot represented her
She testified that she never spilled the beans on Nick because she was scared
Nick’s attorney suggested that she never sought help or called the police because she’s lying
Benson and Cabot had dinner and drinks while Carisi took Jules to a safe place with police protection
Carisi could not stop and Jules was killed
She decided on the spot that Nick was responsible
telling Rollins: “What better way to get sole custody of your daughter?”
At Stone’s deposition on Nick’s false arrest case
he admitted that he arrested Nick for murder for no other reason than he didn’t like his attitude
they are both sure he is guilty but she is not sure they will ever be able to prove it
Stone said he didn’t envy Benson’s decision to bring Jules back
She said that it’s easier to make a decision if you take your sense of justice
morality or superego– whatever you want to call it– out of the equation
You could see Stone applying that nugget to the decision he had to make about his sister
He decided that she should get more antipsychotic medication
“You made the right decision,” the doctor said
The doctor said that would have been the right decision
because sometimes the only wrong decision is to do nothing
And that really summed up the whole episode in a nutshell because it made no sense
