(Source: Reuters) Imagine living in a city where dying is against the law! In Longyearbyen, Norway, it’s too cold to bury people, and in Cugnaux, France, a ban on dying was used to get permission for a new cemetery. These cities have some of the most surprising and unusual rules around. André Librex, the artist and owner of the Lavandou lavender farm in Franklin, is blunt: the 2020 season was exceptional. The lockdown of early spring led to a spike in demand for outdoor activities and a thirst for wide-open spaces. The unique beauty of lavender fields, coupled with people’s intense desire to get outside, attracted large numbers of regulars as well as new and curious visitors throughout the summer season. For more than 20 years, Librex has diligently cultivated the Mediterranean plant with its distinct purple colouring and distinct perfume, which would normally not grow well in a northern climate. But, after all these years, the lavender has finally acclimatized and even blooms twice per season. According to Librex’s website, he immigrated to Quebec in 1989, and decided — notably in order to maintain a link with his home country — to plant lavender in his adopted province. As a result, the first lavender field in the province was planted in 1998. The heat this summer led to an exceptionally prolific harvest. “A 2020 vintage of superb essential oil. It was the best harvest in 22 years,” says Librex, with more than a little pride. He was able to extract more than 10 litres of oil with his still, which is an extraordinary amount. This precious oil will now be used to create a line of products, including shampoos, soaps, etc. The pandemic also played a significant role on the farm this summer, with masks, social distancing, and hand sanitizing all playing a part. Librex notes, however, that it didn’t change much as Le Lavandou’s success was due in large part to word of mouth. Confined spaces were limited to a single visitor at a time, but guests were able to wander through the deep purple fields and premises, admiring both the tufts of lavender and the artist’s canvases, installed in a gallery set up in an old barn. This year also was also a success for Librex as an artist. He says he was inspired and sold no less than 14 paintings. Solicited by the Bromont en Art Festival (which is going virtual this year), he will have four paintings in that exhibit. After we’d passed Cézanne’s Mont Sainte-Victoire Tracey pointed to her orange-roofed house in a rambling wild estate on the edge of a nature reserve I was expecting to be greeted by a team of servants but once the helicopter buzzed away we were totally alone When she showed me the guest cottage where I was to sleep worried about what slithered about in the woods out there I woke up to find a big lizard crawling about When I mentioned over breakfast that at least it wasn’t a snake My Lips Moved Across Your Face Photograph: Tracey EminThe only time she actually joked about killing me By now we’d been talking for a couple of days and food was running short where we got groceries from a shop whose owners are very slowly teaching her French she said this was the plan all along: to lure me to France get me out to sea and drown me in revenge for bad reviews I’d written I also think the drawings and paintings she’s always done alongside her conceptual works are powerful and expressive She draws with the raw energy of Basquiat and the sensuality of Egon Schiele I can see the downside to living alone in this remote place though obviously it does not occur to her to be scared of anything She has a running battle with local hunters who pursue wild boars across her land when a hornet got caught in the kitchen skylight it was me who stood on a chair to ineffectively flail at it She then told me about the time she arrived here to find a swarm of insects invading her bedroom like some installation by Louise Bourgeois “No nude,” as the much-misunderstood art historian Kenneth Clark put it in the 1950s “should fail to arouse in the spectator some vestige of erotic feeling” Looking at her explicit drawings and paintings it’s not so much a vestige as a tidal wave of passion that comes through Read moreSo the fascinating stories went on, but it was only at breakfast on my very last morning there that I finally raised the subject of sex. Needless to say she explained her preferences and her desires in the same forthright way she says everything else. I still hadn’t really explained that I planned to write an essay almost entirely about art and sex and how she fits into the history of the nude. When I sent the finished piece, I wondered if she would be shocked or simply perplexed. Her response was quick: “I just read it straight through. I love it. It’s so sexy, almost pornographic, hardcore.” I don’t think many other artists would have responded so imaginatively, or given me such freedom. So, my hardcore study of Tracey Emin and the history of the nude is launched this week, and I hope it does justice to a tremendous artist and a rare soul. as plumes of smoke rise from a nearby wildfire on July 26 French authorities ordered the evacuation of up to 12,000 people around a picturesque hilltop town in the southern Cote d’Azur region as fires hopscotched around the Mediterranean coast for a third day 2/12 A plane drops fire retardant over a forest near La Londe-les-Maures in the French Riviera 3/12 A man inspects the damage following a wildfire in Bormes-les-Mimosas 4/12 An aerial view shows plumes of smoke from wildfires in the outskirts of Bormes-les-Mimosas 5/12 Firefighters battle a blaze in Bormes-les-Mimosas 6/12 Men try to extinguish a fire in Bormes-les-Mimosas 7/12 Residents hose down hot spots following a fire in Bormes-les-Mimosas 8/12 A man inspects the damage to a burned-out house in Bormes-les-Mimosas 9/12 People try to extinguish a fire in Bormes-les-Mimosas 10/12 Residents inspect the damage to a home following a wildfire in Bormes-les-Mimosas 11/12 Wildfires continue to ravage the hillside in Bormes-les-Mimosas 12/12 Evacuatees take refuge on the beach on July 26 as a wildfire rages in the forest in Bormes-les-Mimosas Print Reporting from PARIS — Wildfires blazing across the south of France have forced the emergency evacuation of thousands of residents and tourists The French authorities said they had moved to safety around 12,000 people — most of whom are vacationing on its Mediterranean coast in camping sites and holiday homes — as flames swept through forests and firefighters struggled to stop them from spreading French officials said that more than 4,000 firefighters were mobilized to tackle the fires as they raged around the Côte d’Azur at the height of the tourist season Fires broke out along the popular seaside area on Monday forcing a few scattered evacuations and causing a scare on the edges of the celebrated seaside resort of Saint Tropez The latest and most serious conflagration started around the hillside town of Bormes-les-Mimosas on Tuesday and quickly spread across swathes of pine forest aided by strong winds and dry ground conditions caused by an ongoing heatwave On Wednesday four tracker planes and several water-dumping aircraft were dispatched to the region as billowing black smoke filled the sky Tourists and local residents used Twitter to share photos and videos from the region Emmanuelle Kremer of Bormes-les-Mimosas posted: “Fire still going on since midnight...this seems endless.” 15:50 - The planes are FINALLY back in #BormesLesMimosas #wildfires #var #France pic.twitter.com/ElizRNvlpX Colonel Eric Martin of the local Var region firefighting unit told French television nearly 600 staff were trying to stop the blaze spreading It has already destroyed more than 3,500 acres of forest in the region The evacuated were given temporary shelter in local town halls was briefly closed Wednesday but has reopened France’s Mediterranean coastline is vulnerable to seasonal wildfires because of its inland forest fringe that becomes a tinderbox in the dry summers said several firefighters and police had been injured but no residents or holidaymakers have been hurt Devastating summer fires also broke out on the island of Corsica where nearly 5,000 acres of forest to the north of the holiday isle were consumed ‘For Charlie, it’s too late’: Parents of British baby abandon legal fight to get treatment in U.S. How an L.A. native learned to stop worrying and love — OK, tolerate — India’s monsoon Another victim of Venezuela’s unrest: Caracas’ once-renowned zoo 11:35 a.m.: This article was updated with staff reporting and the latest figures on acreage burned and firefighters deployed.
