Amenhotep I ‘unwrapped’ digitally by Cairo scientists
revealing details from his grave jewellery to his teeth
small nose and curly hair he physically resembles his father
Perhaps surprisingly for someone who lived about 3,500 years ago
Saleem is talking about the mummified body of the pharaoh Amenhotep I
a warrior king who has been something of an enigma in that he is one of the few royal mummies not to be unwrapped in modern times
Until now, that is. Saleem, a professor of radiology at the faculty of medicine at Cairo University
is part of a team which has successfully unwrapped Amenhotep I not physically but digitally
using 3D computed tomography (CT) scanning technology
They provide details about his appearance and the lavishness of the jewellery he was buried with
View image in fullscreenCT scanning showed that Amenhotep I had good teeth
Photograph: Dr Sahar Saleem/University of Cairo/PA“We show that Amenhotep I was approximately 35 years old when he died,” Saleem said
“He was approximately 169cm tall [5ft 6in]
he wore 30 amulets and a unique golden girdle with gold beads
“Amenhotep I seems to have physically resembled his father … he had a narrow chin
Saleem is lead author of a study published on Tuesday in the journal Frontiers in Medicine
She said the fact his teeth were so good was testament to how “amazing” the mummification process was
Even the tiny bones inside the ears were preserved
No doubt Amenhotep’s teeth were well-preserved
Amenhotep I was the second king of the 18th dynasty and ascended to the throne after the death of his father, Ahmose I. He ruled Egypt for about 21 years between roughly 1525 and 1504BC
His throne name was Djeserkare – “Holy is the Soul of Re” – and he is seen as having a peaceful reign which allowed him time to concentrate on administrative organisation and the building of temples
View image in fullscreenA golden beaded girdle with a snail amulet

Photograph: Dr Sahar Saleem/University of Cairo/PAEgyptologists know from decoded hieroglyphics that Amenhotep was unwrapped by priests in the 11th century BC – during the 21st dynasty – in order to repair damage done by tomb robbers
It had also been speculated that they unwrapped him in order to reuse royal burial equipment or steal ornaments
Saleem said their findings debunked those theories and showed the priests had the best of intentions
The original tomb of Amenhotep I has never been found
He was discovered in 1881 at a site in Luxor where it is known officials of the 21st dynasty hid the mummies of kings and nobles in order to protect them from tomb robbers
His home is the Egyptian Museum in Cairo
He has not been unwrapped because of the “perfect” linen wrappings covered by garlands of delphiniums
View image in fullscreen‘Like unwrapping a gift’: Dr Sahar Saleem of Cairo University scanning the mummy
Photograph: Dr Sahar Saleem/University of Cairo/PAWhen the coffin was first opened a preserved wasp was found
probably attracted by the smell of the garlands
The research team has discovered Amenhotep’s brain is intact
unlike other kings including Tutankhamun and Ramses II
Saleem said the project had been an exciting one
The team had been hoping to find evidence of how Amenhotep died but that has proved elusive
“We couldn’t find any wounds or disfigurement due to disease to justify the cause of death
presumably by grave robbers after his first burial,” said Saleem
“His entrails had been removed by the first mummifiers
the priests of the 21st dynasty lovingly repaired the injuries inflicted by the tomb robbers
and preserved the magnificent jewellery and amulets in place.”

Follow your favourite characters around the Mediterranean city
Wander around and feel as if you already knew all the squares
narrow streets and landscapes which inspired the French sitcom Plus Belle la Vie
broadcast for the first time in 2004 on France 3
A soap which made its great comeback on TV in 2024
A great opportunity to see the emblematic places which rhythmed the everyday life of the inhabitants of an imaginary quarter of Marseille – “the Mistral”
a quarter which directly inspired the plot of Plus Belle la Vie
From its narrow little streets to its pastel facades
its charming little squares which look like a Mediterranean village
typical crafts and even the linen drying in the windows
it’s a breath of the Sud and its pleasant lifestyle
A clue: look for the terrace of the Bar des 13 Coins and its picturesque facade which was the inspiration for Roland’s bar
a key meeting place for the characters in the series
Place Bargemon often becomes a shooting location and the silhouette of the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde
was also a backdrop for the saga’s shoots

A lush green highly visited part of Marseille
Parc Borély is spread over 18 hectares and includes botanical gardens
Located near Avenue du Prado which links the Stade Vélodrome to the Corniche
these splendid gardens are often used in the sitcom Plus Belle la Vie
and the characters have a picnic there or a chat
This is the green lung of the Mediterranean city
the biggest international pétaque competition in the world
The Palais du Pharo is one of the town’s symbolic monuments
It was commissioned by Napoléon III for Empress Eugénie
The historic 19th-century building is located on the Pointe du Pharo
It has an exceptional view of Marseille with a 360° view from the Château d’If to Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde
and the ballet of boats on Quai de la Joliette
the Panier quarter and in the background the peaks of the Étoile and Garlaban massifs
Its Napoleonic architecture and its gardens opening open onto the Vieux-Port and the Mediterranean were naturally also used by the teams of Plus Belle La Vie
It has also been the setting for several episodes such as Blanche and Franck’s wedding
Vincent’s trial and even Luna’s concert
the view takes on pink and orange hues which literally steal the scene

A small anecdote: Fort Saint-Jean that you can see was commissioned by Louis XIV to guard the entrance to the Vieux-Port
The delightful new maritime facade of Marseille unfolds from the fort with its pinkish lights to Abbaye Saint-Victor
head for the 3rd arrondissement in Marseille
3000 m² are used for the indoor scenes in the sitcom
Guillaume’s office and the ground floor of Hôtel Select
There are also two other studios which cover Ninon’s loft
Guillaume’s apartment and Phénicie’s firm
in a 4th studio outside the Pôle Média you have the Commissariat du Mistral (police station)
the kitchen… The studios are a stone’s throw from Saint-Charles station which you can also see in the sitcom and you get a magnificent view from the parvis of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde and its famous staircase facing Boulevard d’Athènes and La Canebière
The studios are sometimes open to the public on open days and diehard fans also watch out for the actors at the end of the shooting

Our weekly email is chockful of interesting and relevant insights into Jewish history
Why there are so many Jewish lawyers fighting injustice
We know that Jews have won a disproportionate number of Nobel Prizes: over twenty per cent of them from a group that represents 0.2 per cent of the world population
But the most striking disproportion is in the field of economics
The first Nobel Prize in economics was awarded in 1969
The last as of the time of writing was in 2016
inventor of the theory of comparative advantage
which Paul Samuelson called the only true and non-obvious theory in the social sciences
inventor of Game Theory (creatively enlarged by Nobel Prize winner Robert Aumann)
Milton Friedman developed monetary economics
Daniel Kahneman and the late Amos Tversky created the field of behavioural economics
Garry Becker applied economic analysis to other areas of decision making
as did Richard Posner to the interplay of economics and law
To these we must add outstanding figures in economic and financial policy: Larry Summers
Stanley Fischer and others too numerous to mention
he develops a theory of trade cycles - seven fat years followed by seven lean years - a cycle that still seems approximately to hold
Joseph also intuited that when a head of state dreams about cows and ears of corn
he is probably unconsciously thinking about macro-economics
The disturbing nature of the dreams suggested that God was sending an advance warning of a "black swan,"[1] a rare phenomenon for which conventional economics is unprepared
he immediately proceeds to a solution: use the good years to build up resources for the lean times
a sound instance of long-term economic planning:
Let Pharaoh appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance
They should collect all the food of these good years that are coming and store up the grain under the authority of Pharaoh
This food should be held in reserve for the country
to be used during the seven years of famine that will come upon Egypt
so that the country may not be ruined by the famine." (Gen
When the people ran out of money during the lean years
he arranged for them to sell their land to Pharaoh with the sole exception of the land belonging to the priests
paying him a tax of 20 per cent of their produce each year
labour and land meant that power was now concentrated in the hands of Pharaoh
and the people themselves reduced to serfdom
Both of these developments would eventually be used against Joseph's own people
when a new Pharaoh arose and enslaved the Israelites
It cannot be by accident that the Torah twice uses about the Egyptians the same phrase it will later use about the Israelites: avadim le-Pharo: they have become "Pharaoh's slaves" (Gen
There is already here a hint that too much economic power in the hands of the state leads to what Friedrich Hayek called "the road to serfdom"[2] and the eclipse of liberty
So a reasonable case could be made that Joseph was the first economist
But why the predominance of Jews in economics in the modern age
I do not want to argue that Jews created capitalism
Max Weber famously argued that it was the Protestant (primarily Calvinist) ethic that shaped "the spirit of capitalism."[3] Rodney Stark argued that it was the Catholic Church that did so
prior to the Reformation.[4] The author of the first great text of market economics
was a leading member of the Scottish Enlightenment whose religious views hovered between conventional Christianity and Deism
Those who have claimed a special kinship between Jews and capitalism - most notably Karl Marx and Werner Sombart - tended to like neither Jews nor capitalism
there is a strong affinity between the market economy and what is broadly known as the Judeo-Christian ethic
because it was only in such cultures that it emerged
led the West in almost every aspect of technology until the seventeenth century
a free economy or an industrial revolution
What was it about biblical values that proved so fruitful for economic thought
The Harvard historian and economist David Landes offered insight in his magisteral work The Wealth and Poverty of Nations.[5] First is the biblical insistence on property rights
He quotes Moses' words during the Korach revolt: "I have not taken one ass from them
nor have I wronged any one of them" (Num
the prophet Samuel rhetorically asks the people who have come asking for a king: "Whose ox have I taken
Landes says that these remarks set the Israelites apart from any other culture of the time
the king's right to appropriate other people's property was taken for granted
John Locke saw that private property rights are an essential element of a free society
A second feature was Judaism's respect for the dignity of labour
Third was the Judaic sense of linear time: time not as a series of cycles in which everything eventually returns to the way it was
We are so familiar with these ideas - they form the bedrock of Western culture - that we are not always aware that they are not human universals
the most decisive single factor - the great break of Judaism from the ancient world of magic
mystery and myth - was the de-consecration of nature that followed from the fact that God created nature by an act of will
holiness lies not in the way the world is but in the way it ought to be
and the exploitation of the powerless by the powerful are not the will of God
but we have the power to rise above nature
economists fighting poverty and (especially in modern Israel) agricultural technologists finding new ways to grow food in environments where it has never grown before
All of this is brilliantly portrayed in this week's parsha
There will be a famine lasting seven years
It is what he does next that is world-changing
He sees this not as a fate to be endured but as a problem to be solved
saving a whole region from death by starvation
God does not want us to accept poverty and pain but to cure them
