A teammate and friend of basketball star Deanna Tuchscherer is heading overseas to play hoops in Europe
Maddy Gobeil has inked a contract with US Poinçonnet Basket
a club in France’s Nationale Féminine 1 (NF1) league
Gobeil joins Tuchscherer as the second active UFV women’s b-ball player spending the 2020-21 season in Europe
Tuchscherer joined ZTE NKK in Zalaegerszeg
Gobeil felt that with the uncertainty surrounding the status of the Canadian university sport season amidst the COVID-19 pandemic
taking the opportunity to develop overseas was her best option
She will have her remaining four years of eligibility intact when she returns to UFV in 2021
she is able to continue her kinesiology studies online
“I’m excited to get to compete at a high level against older
more experienced women,” the sophomore guard from Kamloops said
“I’m looking forward to learning from my teammates and other players in the league
and then bringing that back to my team at UFV next fall.”

Gobeil was one of the top rookies in Canada West last season
good for third on the team as the Cascades posted a 16-4 record in conference play
Her campaign was punctuated by a number of impressive scoring outbursts – a season-high 19 points (including four three-pointers) vs
and a team-high 16 points in a playoff loss to Alberta on Feb
leading the South Kamloops Titans to back-to-back B.C
earning tournament MVP honours on both occasions
Gobeil and Tuchscherer are not the only Cascades playing professionally this fall
unable to return to Canada from her native Australia amidst the pandemic
has suited up for the Norths Bears of the Waratah League
Recent graduate Taylor Claggett has launched her pro career with Maree Basketball Club in Ireland
“I believe we’ve found a great situation for Maddy,” Cascades head coach Al Tuchscherer said
“She’s going to be challenged every day in practice
and having watched a few of US Poinçonnet Basket’s games
This team has a very good and experienced point guard
and I’m excited for Maddy to compete against her every day
“I think every U SPORTS team is trying find a way to challenge their athletes in 2020-21
Our approach has been to support our players who want to find a challenge like this – Maddy is our third after Lauryn and Deanna
this really opens the door for some of our other athletes to play and to be coached hard
and really puts everyone in a position to grow
We’re really excited to bring everyone back together in the spring and see the growth in our team.”
Playing professionally overseas is a thrill for Gobeil in more ways than one – she’s always dreamed of traveling to France (specifically Paris)
and this will be her first opportunity to do so
my room had a Paris theme,” she said with a chuckle
and I think that’s what captured my eye as a kid.”
Gobeil may finally get her chance to see the City of Lights in person

Jamie Meehan (AVC Aix-en-Provence) has taken his best result since stepping up to UCI Continental level this year and told stickybottle he may have taken his first victory had he adopted a more aggressive approach in the final of Le Poinçonnet-Panazol Limoges Métropole
the former Irish U23 road race champion still shrugged off very wet conditions late in the race to go on the attack over the final climbs
He made the key split of about eight off the front and then had the legs to leave those he was with as part of a two-man move
Meehan attacked off the front and rode clear with France’s Tom Lambert Wetzel (Vélo Club Villefranche Beaujolais)
with the duo finishing 58 seconds up on a seven-rider chase group; Lambert Wetzel winning it in a two-up sprint
“I think I gave up a win,” Meehan told stickybottle
“I definitely felt strong and he told me afterwards that he was dead
And there was a good climb with 10k to go and if I’d gone there
“But I’m pretty happy with the shape; how the legs were
how the body was considering my map wasn’t working
my power meter wasn’t working in the rain
And I know what to watch out for going forward
Meehan said with a climb some 106km into the 158km race
adding after the flat opening section of the race
And with about 60-70km completed it was clear to him the conditions were starting to impact morale in the bunch
“Heads were dropping but it didn’t really phase me too much with being where I’m from,” laughed the Donegal man
the head for the front and when I saw it was in one line I attacked.”
had a strong squad out on the day and they rode the climb hard
with Meehan cresting the first peak of the climb in a group of eight
They started to work and when they reached the top of the climb proper
the Irish rider took the climbers’ prime
before his group swelled close to 20 riders
eventual winner Lambert Wetzel attacked and when the riders at the front couldn’t hold him
Meehan jumped across to the leader to form the winning two-man move
and we just went for it from there,” he said
I put in an attack with maybe 3k to go but he saw that coming
I ended up leading in the sprint and really he just had more power in the sprint.”
