Several major ski stations in the south of France are now closed for the 2024/2025 year
as snowfall in the Pyrénées mountains dwindles and spring comes into force
Five stations remain open on the French side of the mountain chain: Grand Tourmalet and Les Angles will remain open until Sunday April 6
Piau-Engaly and Le Pic du Midi open until April 21.
Resorts that saw their final skiers for the season this weekend included Luz-Ardiden
A bout of snow on Saturday followed by a sun-drenched Sunday provided ideal conditions for the final patrons of the closing stations
who were able to hit the pistes one final time.
Unlike other closures in the mountain chain
this is not an early end to the season but part of the annual framework for the resorts.
From the end of the February half-term holidays
the number of visitors to resorts drops considerably
however running costs remain the same.
the few remaining skiers would be split among them
The warmer days also mean less chance of snow
reducing the number of available pistes.
The 2024/2025 season was one of good cheer for several resorts
with high visitor numbers and a fair amount of snow.
Around 352,000 skiers visited the Ax 3 Domaines resort
in part due to a high number of visitors in the Christmas period.
The N'PY group that manages eight major resorts in the mountains recorded 2,025,000 visitors across its slopes
100,000 more than the previous year.
The record – 2,160,000 set in 2021/2022 – was a result of a post-Covid lockdown boom
A busy Christmas compensated for a quieter March – the group saw less than 30,000 skiers last weekend
The stations that remain open are situated higher in the mountains
and less at risk of snow melting before the season ends
That being said, a warm spell will cover France from the end of this week
with temperatures up to 20C in several areas
Whilst it will not reach this level at the peaks
no snow is likely to fall between now and the weekend

The team had already been one of the younger groups in the league and needed another impact group of rookies to lean on to grow as a franchise
putting themselves on the map as a potential team to watch when it comes to making way-too-early Super Bowl LX predictions
They landed the Defensive Rookie of the Year in edge rusher Jared Verse with their first round selection and trio of future and immediate impact players on both sides of the ball during the second day of the draft
The Rams nailed the third day of the selection process
acquiring starters such as center Beaux Limmer (Round 6
Limmer became the starter late in the season after inconsistency from free agent signing Jonah Jackson and never let go
displaying quality performances after another and establishing himself as a potential cornerstone in the middle of the offensive line
“I think he has a big-picture understanding, and the game makes sense to him,” head coach Sean McVay said following Limmer’s debut in Week 11
“I think he's continuing to improve in his ownership and his command to be able to communicate
One of the most interesting things from the Rams 2024 draft class was the multiple selections of defensive lineman and pass rushers
the Rams took edge rusher Brennan Jackson (Round 5
154) and defensive lineman Tyler Davis (Round 6
All four players have seen playing time one way or another
Part of the reasoning for this was because of the retirement of Hall of Fame defensive tackle Aaron Donald
“You're never going to ask somebody to replace that void he created
but you can do that by the unit so to be able to get (OLB) Jared (Verse)
to be able to get (OLB) Brennan (Jackson) on the edges
The way that they play the game,” McVay said on the final day of the draft
“Then to be able to add (DT) Braden (Fiske) and (DT) Tyler (Davis)
Davis could potentially be the replacement for free agent nose tackle Bobby Brown III but this remains to be seen
and Jackson seems to have established him as a rotational pass rusher for future seasons to come
Rounding out the remainder of the draft class
seventh round choice and interior offensive lineman KT Leveston rarely saw the field and was mostly inactive throughout the season
Sixth round pick Jordan Whittington became a kick return specialist and depth piece at wide receiver
Undrafted free agents also played a role in the Rams defense such as linebacker Omar Speights
safety Jaylen McCollough and cornerback Josh Wallace
Most of these defenders are expected to have roles in the 2025 Rams defense headed by defensive coordinator Chris Shula
this draft class saw the most impact of any other group of selections in the league and have allowed Los Angeles to become a youthful bunch with a high ceiling to reach the mountain top once again

Injury may keep Edmonton’s Findlay out of London triathlon
Paula Findlay will travel to London this week to defend her title in the World Championship Series triathlon on Saturday
but there’s a chance a lingering hip injury will keep her out of the race
said Monday the right hip injury that forced the 22-year-old Findlay to withdraw from a World Cup race in Edmonton on July 10 is not yet 100-per-cent recovered
“There has been some improvement,” Kelly said in a telephone interview from the French ski resort of Les Angles in the Pyrenees
“It’s a tender area that can be slow to recover
“It is not clear yet if she will be able to go in and be competitive on race day.”
Findlay first injured the hip during a training run in Victoria on June 30

A Missouri judge turned to Disney for inspiration for a hunter's punishment after he pleaded guilty to contributing to the illegal killing of hundreds of deer
Missouri officials began a nearly nine-month investigation into the illegal poaching of deer
Through interviews with suspects and people of interest in Missouri
officials tied 14 Missouri residents to more than 230 wildlife violations charges
pleaded guilty to one count of taking wildlife illegally in October
"Most of the deer were trophy-class animals," the Missouri Department of Conversation said
Lawrence County conservation agent Andy Barnes said the exact number of deer the suspects illegally hunted over the past several years was unknown
but felt comfortable saying that the number was upward of several hundred
"Conservation investigators estimated that the group was responsible for killing hundreds of deer over a three-year period," Lawrence County Prosecuting Attorney Don Trotter said

Playing back a video encoded in H264 on our Windows PC via VLC
It works out of the box and it takes great pictures
Video quality is good and more than ample for projects
Compatible with all models of Raspberry Pi
but it’s pricey and doesn’t come with a lens
Fast forward to 2023 and we have a new mainstream Pi camera, the Raspberry Pi Camera v3 which updates the original camera’s sensor-on-a-board form factor to pack a 12MP Sony IMX708 sensor and auto focus
We tested both the standard and wide angle (non-NOIR) versions of the Camera v3 and found the image quality excellent
with the auto focus feature a really helpful upgrade.

At a casual glance there isn’t much difference between Camera v3 and v2
but underneath a silver package lies the auto focus system for the Sony IMX708 sensor
This extra package is where we hit a small issue
from the end of the lens to the rear of the PCB
Raspberry Pi Camera stand by Atle Berg at Printables(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)Raspberry Pi Camera stand by Atle Berg at Printables
The v3 comes right between the v2 and the HQ camera
We gain more megapixels and an overall larger image
We didn’t have precise data for some columns so we’ll fill those in later

The biggest downside of the official camera modules has always been the form factor
It lacks a mechanism to lock the camera in place (in a class of 30 educators
This issue was corrected with the HQ camera’s screw mount but with Camera Module v3
we see only the legacy mount points on the corners of the camera.
Arducam’s autofocus camera features a case which provides a mount point via a clip-on case
We would’ve loved this to come as standard with Camera Module 3
We powered on our Pi running the latest Raspberry Pi OS release
and our first thought was to enable the camera interface
but then we realised that we no longer had to do that
We updated our list of software repositories and then upgraded the software
This pulled the latest Camera Module v3 updates
(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)Our first test was via libcamera
The camera was placed 9 inches away from the test objects and lighting was consistent between each shot
What we found in our tests was that still images were excellent
Be they near (4 inches / 10cm) or far they were of consistent quality and on par with the High Quality camera
Autofocus times for still images were quick; we could see the camera hunting for a focus target
but we could see the “steps” as the focus worked to keep up
close up focus was excellent in our videos
picking up the surface mount components of the original Raspberry Pi
A new feature included with Camera Module 3 is HDR (High Dynamic Range) which increases the dynamic luminosity range of images
With HDR we get deeper darkness and brighter images
This works by capturing multiple images of the same scene
These images are then combined into a single image which encompasses the entire range.
Camera Module 3’s HDR images are restricted to 3MP which libcamera uses to generate an image with a resolution of 2304 x 1296
The HDR image was unmistakably brighter and vibrant
HDR would be an interesting addition to Raspberry Pi trail cams and to record landscape scenes
An HDR image captured with libcamera.(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)A non-HDR image captured with libcamera.(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)Moving our tests to Picamera2
we recreated the steps in a recent how to but we noticed that autofocus wasn’t very “auto.” It turns out that we need to include an extra class import and a line of code before we open a preview window and record
This extra line is picam2.set_controls({"AfMode": controls.AfModeEnum.Continuous}) and it comes from the libcamera Controls class.
With this line we instruct the camera to hunt for focus
The process and quality is identical to libcamera
Stills were of good quality and the camera focus hunt was acceptable
Video recording was a little stuttery as the focus searched for a target
(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)Picamera2 also has HDR
the kernel interface between the camera and the Linux video system
Right now it does not offer ready support for HDR with this camera
In order to activate HDR for Picamera2 we need to open a terminal and manually set the camera to use it
v4l2-ctl --set-ctrl wide_dynamic_range=1 -d /dev/v4l-subdev0and to turn it off we use
v4l2-ctl --set-ctrl wide_dynamic_range=0 -d /dev/v4l-subdev0We took two images with Picamera2
The results are nearly identical to libcamera
but dare we say that the HDR Picamera image looks a little better
Wide angle 120 degree lens(Image credit: Future)Standard 75 degree lens.(Image credit: Future)The wide angle version of Camera Module 3 brings a 120 degree angle of view
In other words we get wider shots that encompass a greater area
The extra field of view brings with it a little distortion in the vertical plane – think the opening crawl to Star Wars
But the extra horizontal space is remarkable and shows (for better or worse) the state of our workbench
everything is the same as the standard 75 degree version
We took some close up images with the wide lens
We also created a quick scene to show colors
We’d use this lens for outdoor projects such as trail cams
you could hack them with a little scalpel work on the lens ring) meant that Machine Learning and AI projects could be difficult
Faces / objects would need to be a set distance from the camera in order to “see” them
With the Camera Module 3 we have an opportunity to extend the vision of our ML/AI projects and use them to monitor objects from afar
focusing on the red car on a freeway or spotting a bluejay flying in the trees
hobbyists will use the autofocus on the trail cameras
alarm systems and robot vision projects to provide dynamic responses to moving objects
The wide angle lens lends itself to outdoor projects
the distortion may not benefit your intended use
Research and testing before deploying to mission critical projects is a must
you’ll see benefits from using the Camera v3 over the similarly-priced Camera v2
If you are running the latest Raspberry Pi OS
this is truly plug and play and the results are great
Sure we lack the standard camera mounting screw as found on Arducam’s version
video is good and HDR is a welcome addition to the repertoire
We won’t be shooting the next blockbuster with this camera
but we will have a lot of fun taking great images

many people immediately think of the delicious crema catalana
golden beneath its fine veil of caramelised sugar
less sweet but just as seductive jewel in its crown: the Neiges Catalanes
Nestling in the majestic mountains of the Pyrenees
these ski resorts offer an incomparable skiing experience
while being steeped in the rich Catalan culture
And if crème Catalane has conquered taste buds the world over
let Neiges Catalanes melt your mountain and skiing heart
The Catalan mountains have always been a popular destination for skiers and winter sports enthusiasts
Neiges Catalanes offers an unrivalled skiing experience
combining Catalan tradition with modern facilities
Neiges Catalanes has always emphasised the importance of solidarity between resorts
Despite their competitive nature at the outset
these resorts have been able to join forces to offer a varied and attractive range of activities
Les Neiges Catalanes is an assortment of 6 ski areas, with 6 different flavours: Font-Romeu Pyrénées 2000, Porté Puymorens, Cambre d’Aze, La Quillane, Les Angles and Formiguères
the word “Catalan” is not just a geographical reference: it conjures up a whole world of culture
like a recipe handed down from generation to generation
and cultural ingredients drawn from a medieval past
The Catalan snows are not just synonymous with snow-capped peaks and ski slopes; they also evoke centuries-old traditions
When we talk about the ‘Neiges Catalanes’
we’re also talking about skiing with character
skiing that can be enjoyed both on the slopes and by the fire
to the sound of a sardana or over a plate of ‘trinxat’
It’s this richness and diversity that makes the Neiges Catalanes a destination in a class of its own
Each resort offers panoramas to feast your eyes on and slopes to savour
Although distinct in terms of topography and atmosphere
they share a number of common features that make this popular destination so strong and unique
All these resorts are nestled in the majestic Catalan Pyrenees
hours from Perpignan or 2 hours from Barcelona
Those who have the privilege of owning a second home among the 45,000 beds in Puigcerdà are particularly spoilt for choice
Spaniards represent around 20-40% of customers
depending on the resorts in the Neiges Catalanes”
It has to be said that the Neiges Catalanes resorts offer breathtaking panoramas
Whether you’re on the Gallinera plateau at an altitude of over 2000 metres in Font Romeu
with an uninterrupted view over the entire Cerdan plateau
the Cambre d’Aze and the Canigó massif
or at the top of the Roc d’Aude in Les Angles
with its area alternating between forests of hooked pine and wide open spaces
you can’t help but be moved by the scenery before you
At Cambre d’Aze
skiers can explore a ski area reaching an altitude of 2,400 metres at the foot of an imposing glacial cirque
revealing the vast expanses of the Cerdagne
not forgetting the proud peaks of the Catalan Pyrenees
the Mediterranean can even be glimpsed on the horizon
adding an exotic touch to the winter picture
Further east, Porte Puymorens offers a vertiginous experience
a terrace boldly designed in translucent glass and steel suspends visitors above the void
taking in the whole ski area set against a backdrop of mountains
Formiguères, with its breathtaking views from the arrival point of the Serre de Maury chairlift at 2320 metres, reveals the Galbe valley and the Capcir plateau in all their splendour.
Finally, the resort of La Quillane invites you to contemplate from the top of the Mouscadou ski lift at 1,900 metres. The snow-capped peaks stand out against the blue sky, offering a natural spectacle of the utmost beauty.
When it comes to skiing, these resorts have retained the authentic flavour of the past while incorporating the latest innovations, such as a traditional dessert revisited by a Michelin-starred chef, with modern facilities, in terms of ski lifts, snowmaking and the services offered to skiers.
Les Neiges Catalanes is like an assortment of macaroons. Each resort is a different flavour, but they all share that Catalan essence, that marzipan that binds it all together. With 210 km of pistes, it’s like a big meringue just waiting for you. Add to that almost 100 ski lifts, guaranteeing unrivalled access comfort, and 1000 snow cannons, ensuring optimum snow quality all season long.
Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or expert, you’ll find pistes to suit you. What’s more, they also offer fun zones, snowparks and areas reserved for younger skiers.
But that’s not all! Lovers of Nordic skiing will also find plenty to do here, with 160km of dedicated pistes. This offer is further enhanced by the Capcir Nordic resort, which brings together three breathtaking areas: La Calme, La Llose and Les Estanyols. Walking enthusiasts have not been forgotten: over 250km of dedicated snowshoe trails and white trails await adventurers in search of untouched landscapes.
Les Neiges Catalanes is like an assortment of petits fours: you can try everything without having to travel too far. The proximity of the resorts makes it extremely easy to discover several of them in a short space of time. For example, it takes just 20 minutes by car from Les Angles to Font Romeu, or 45 minutes from Porte Puymorens to Cambre d’Aze. By road, it’s just 7 minutes from Les Angles to Fomiguères, and 14 minutes from La Quillane to Font Romeu.
The Season ski pass and the Week ski pass are shared by all the Neiges Catalanes resorts. They give access to the seven downhill ski areas and the Nordic ski area. So, instead of limiting yourself to a single resort, you can vary the pleasures and discover the different slopes, panoramas and special features of each resort.
Take advantage of an exclusive offer until 03 December 2023: the season ski pass is discounted to €609. And for families, there’s an unmissable offer: buy four season passes and the cheapest one is on offer.
And for those who want to enjoy Les Neiges Catalanes by the week, there’s a 6-day ski pass from €228 (reduced rate) or a 7-day ski pass from €251 (reduced rate).
Over and above these tempting offers, the Neiges Catalanes have become a real tool for regional development. These resorts are not just places for winter fun, they are also powerful levers for local development.
In March, these thousand little stars sparkle on the slopes, all gathered in the same resort for a new introduction to skiing. It’s a great way for Neiges Catalanes to shape the future, by ensuring generational renewal and promoting mountain culture. With 12 years under their belts and 12,000 children taught, they can proudly say that they have added their grain of salt to the next generation.
More resorts and ski areas open this weekend. There has been some fresh snow & cold temperatures have allowed the snow cannons to pump out artificial snow as the main season approaches. PlanetSKI was in Schlick 2000 in the Tirol as it opened. UPDATED
They are not fully open but have opened some slopes at altitude
Resorts are also opening in the Pyrenees where 16 have some slopes open and in Scandinavia nine have some terrain on offer
Some of the major ones in France started last the weekend: Avoriaz
More open this weekend including Les Menuires in Les3Vallees where snow has been falling once more
PlanetSKI will be in Les Menuires next weekend
Some of the smaller French ones too like Isola 2000 in the southern Alps and Les Angles in the Pyrenees are already open

In Italy more slopes have opened in the Cervinia ski area with Valtournoche opening for business
In Switzerland Laxx and and Crans-Montana are open
Many other resorts that are already open are firing up more lifts and offering more runs open this weekend
Conditions are not perfect for the beginning of December
but they are much better than many people thought a couple of weeks ago
James Cove was in Obergergl in Austria last week
He then moved round to Kuhtai where the weather closed in again
but he was able to make the most of the conditions
Then it was round to Stubai where the wind has picked up
with gusts of up to 90kms per hour at the weekend
There remains some very decent conditions lower down the resort though runs are not open to the base of the resort
Snowmaking has been taking place on an industrial scale across the Alps
At altitude things are now looking quite respectable across many parts of the Alps
PlanetSKI has already reported from the Otztal Valley in the Tirol
Here’s James again – he seems rather pleased to have his skis on again
If you want to know what’s in the forecast then do check back
or look at our social media channels for the latest updates
We reported earlier in the week and pronounced the 2022/23 ski season underway
In the Pyrenees things are getting underway too
While in Andorra the Grand Valira and Val Nord ski areas opened on Friday
“The recent snowfall and drop in temperatures has meant artificial snow could be produced
ensuring the Ordino-Arcalis resort will be ready a day earlier than expected and with good conditions,” said a statement from the ski resort ahead of its opening
40% of the slopes are open and 25% of the ski lifts working in arcalis
Les Angles and Font-Romeu are already up and running
In Scandinavia more resorts are opening in Norway
Kvitfjell in Norway has opened more terrain
and Salen in Sweden has fired up some lifts
And lets not forget North America where the early season conditions are some of the best in recent memory
Jackson Hole is starting its tram and some other lifts this weekend
“We are elated to open the Aerial Tram and upper mountain on Decembed 3rd
The snowfall we have received thus far this season is providing some of the best early-season conditions we have seen in decades,” stated the resort President
