A U.K.-based team is working to save bottles of Champagne
brandy and more in the wreckage of the S.S
As seafaring cargo, wine has been known to go down with the ship when disaster strikes
Such was the fate of a cache of bottles aboard the S.S
a British steamer sunk by a German U-boat on Sept
including bottles of Champagne (in both magnums and pint-sized bottles)
the more we got quite excited about what we were seeing
which was a whole pile of wine,” Jayson told Wine Spectator
It’s difficult to estimate how many bottles the Libourne carried as it returned from delivering coal to Bordeaux
as most of the booze was undeclared on the cargo manifest (unlike the ship’s hefty supply of gherkins)
But the bottles number well into the thousands
While many are predictably in bad shape, Hudson and Jayson expect that a significant number are salvageable, even drinkable, meaning they could be worth tens of thousands of dollars, if previous shipwrecked wine rescues are any indication
“For the Champagne, you can see the corks and the muselets—the cages—are protected,” Hudson said
“Some of [the still wine corks] are definitely intact; some of them have wax seals.”
10994’s overall strategy is to rescue and sell as many bottles as they can
donating a portion of proceeds to the Coastguard Association and Royal National Lifeboat Institution charities
we’d like to do a bulk salvage and bring anything up that was worth salvaging,” Hudson said
abides by the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage
which rules against disturbing underwater sites more than 100 years old
This means saving the bottles is a no-go per the U.K.’s Department for Digital Culture
as well as the Marine Management and Historic England organizations
Hudson and Jayson argue that because the cargo is perishable and the Libourne has basically crumbled to nothing (largely thanks to English Channel fishing trawlers)
They hope to eventually receive dispensation
but there’s no knowing when that might be or how much longer any salvageable wines might survive
10994 would still need additional financing to continue its mission; the team is currently looking for backers
“With the water depths involved, it’s a significant amount of money just to get there,” said Jayson. “You need a commercial basis, otherwise you can’t do it.” For now, curious wine and history lovers will have to settle for 10994's video of the underwater discovery

Welcome to the Father Christmas postal office in the French town of Libourne
secretaries - spend the holiday season sorting through letters from children around the world and mailing back colorful greeting cards
The center receives so many letters from Russia that it hired a Russian-speaking secretary
France") have been landing there for more than 40 years
Some children ask Santa to give their father a job
One child sent in a doll for Santa to give to someone less privileged
Another mailed $120 for Santa to buy him the perfect gift
one letter sent by a class of primary school students in southwestern France was 196 feet long
rolled up like a scroll and hand-delivered
staffers responded to children in 127 countries with 1.3 million cards - dwarfing the volume handled by other free Santa services in Germany
"Babbo Natale" - as Santa is known - responds with Christmas wishes
and a small gift like a puzzle that changes every year
initiative is a way to celebrate Christmas
and also a way to show children the importance of letters as a way to communicate - a mode which is at risk of dying," said Daniela Orsini
a spokeswoman for the Italian Postal Service
Libourne's Santa office dresses up for the occasion
with a Christmas tree and glittering garlands
stockings and letters and drawings from children on the walls
but this is one of his offices," said Herve Labarthe
who heads customer relations at the French mail center
"He's got other things to worry about: Creating the toys
He's delegated to us for more than 40 years."
The office got its start in 1962 after a postal worker in Normandy noticed a sudden influx of seasonal wish letters
but didn't know how to forward them - so they ended up in the trash
telecommunications and telegraph minister at the time
who delegated his child-psychiatrist sister to set up a response center in Paris
Some 2,000 letters were answered that year
the center was moved to Libourne as part of a government policy to decentralize some official services away from the capital
Postal officials say the French station probably gets more letters than other countries because it is the oldest of its kind
it's free - postage isn't even needed for letters mailed within France - and about 25,000 schools write to the center each year
A 1993 article in the Russian newspaper Pravda bolstered the center's celebrity
and since then journalists from around the globe have visited
Some children send thank-you notes after Christmas
and a few write to express their disappointment with toys that break too fast
"But we don't offer after-sales service," said Labarthe
says the operation costs $1.4 million each year
the office goes back to its regular task: Sorting mail with unknown addresses

Follow all the latest reaction from stage 20 of the Tour de France today.
Slovenian Tadej Pogacar is now poised to win a second consecutive Tour de France title after the Slovenian retained the overall leader’s yellow in the 20th stage, a 30.8-km individual time trial won by Belgian Wout van Aert on Saturday.
Barring a crash in Sunday’s final stage in Paris, the 22-year-old Pogacar will finish ahead of Dane Jonas Vingegaard and Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz, who are set to end up second and third overall, respectively.
Pogacar speeds over the line to clinch a second Tour de France title in 10 months.
Van Aert takes the stage but Pogacar has sealed his second Tour de France title at the age of just 22! Here is the yellow jersey crossing the line:
Pogacar crosses the line to win his second Tour de France! He actually lost time to Vingegaard in the time trial - 25 seconds on the day - but it doesn’t matter!
Van Aert wins the stage. Pogacar wins the Tour.
What a ride from Vingegaard! He loses just 32 seconds to Van Aert and finishes third on the day! The revelation of this race!
He will safely finish as runner-up of the Tour.
Ben O’Connor holds on to fourth place after his time trial. And Richard Carapaz has also produced a solid ride, although it will not be enough to leapfrog Jonas Vingegaard into second place.
The Ecuadorian finishes the Tour de France in third, two minutes and eight seconds down on Van Aert today.
Vingegaard is now 30 seconds down on Van Aert.
Meanwhile, Kelderman crosses the line two minutes and 20 seconds down on Van Aert’s (winning) time.
Pog in yellow. He might not be winning this stage, but he has dominated this race.
Pogacar is 38 seconds off Van Aert’s time at the second checkpoint. Van Aert is going to win this time trial and Vingegaard could well come second!

Saturday, July 8, 2023: Libourne to Limoges, 200.7km

The first week of the 2023 Tour de France has had just three opportunities for the pure sprinters - all of them won by Jasper Philipsen, who has the luxury of an unmatchable lead-out man in Mathieu van der Poel on his Alpecin-Deceuninck team.
At 200.7 kilometres in length and on another scorching day in southeastern France, stage 8 represents a mixed forecast.
The departure from Libourne near Bordeaux starts out flat, but as the race approaches the finish in Limoges, the peloton will hit the foothills of the Massif Central and encounter an undulating final 70km that - depending on how it's raced - could prove to difficult for the pure sprinters.
That would give more chances for a rider like Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) to try for a stage win after placing third on stage 7. He'll have the likes of Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), Van der Poel, and Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quickstep) to battle, most likely.
Or, with the mountains returning with a vengeance on stage 9 with a finish on the Puy de Dôme, the peloton could save their energy and let a breakaway contest the stage.
However, Mark Cavendish and his Astana teammates would be encouraged by his promising sprint on the stage to Bordeaux where he had the line in view but was hampered by skipping gears.
A sprint is not out of the question. It will be the 13th time the Tour has finished in Limoges, and the last time in 2016 when Marcel Kittel edged Bryan Coquard at the line.
The finish this time has a slight uphill finish and will be an important day in the battle for the green points jersey.

A town in south-west France has become the first in the country to introduce a forecast for… mosquitoes
The commune of Libourne, near Bordeaux, has made the service available online
it tells locals in real-time the levels of mosquitoes in the area
It works by using “anti-mosquito terminals that allow remote monitoring of the evolution of mosquito populations”
The aim is to encourage residents to take the right measures and avoid the spread of mosquitoes
by regularly emptying areas where water can stagnate or not planting reeds
The mosquito is particularly widespread in the Gironde and can spread serious diseases such as Zika

The commune has already spent “several hundreds of thousands of euros”
and yet “people continue to yell at me about it”
feed and die within a 150m radius from the stagnant water they hatched in
it is because you or your neighbour are not taking the right measures”
He added: “Action must be taken not when the mosquito is born
We will be able to tell residents: ‘Watch out
if you do nothing [then] in a week there will be a mosquito infestation’
Therefore you should act now to [empty] small cups of water in your gardens or plant water collectors.”
the mosquitoes will lay [eggs] in water reserves and the larvae will hatch two days later
it is necessary to act within the next three days,” said Mr Buisson

France’s health ministry has said: “Prevention of bites and fighting the spread of mosquitoes is essential to limit epidemics.”
The main way to stop them from spreading is to remove any containers or areas of stagnant water in your garden or outside space
as this is where the mosquitoes lay their eggs
Tools and other gardening items after rain (or store them away beforehand)
It is also recommended that you report any sightings or bites to Signalement-moustique.anses.fr
the specialist government health department (Anses) website
The page also includes more information about the insect and how to prevent its spread
Research shows that between 70-80% of mosquito bites happen at night
although tiger mosquitoes are most likely to bite in the early mornings and late evenings
If you have followed the advice to stop them from spreading
Use anti-mosquito products that include Deet
Wear covering and light-coloured clothing where possible
Avoid sitting outside for too long when mosquitoes are present
and scientists are always researching new ways to trap them
Recent innovations include a ‘breathing device; that imitates human breathing to trap female mosquitoes
while another larvicide product has been successfully tested in the Camargue
these devices can sometimes damage the environment
as they can kill other insects as well as tiger mosquitoes

One of the main reasons behind the selection of star centre Semi Radradra into the Flying Fijians squad for the November Test matches was to boost the leadership aspect of the team
This was clarified to SUNsports yesterday by Flying Fijians head coach Vern Cotter
The team was welcomed by the Mayor of Libourne
This will also be the Flying Fijians base during next year’s Rugby World Cup
In Cotter’s first assignment with the Flying Fijians during the Autumn Nations Cup in 2020
Radradra missed out selection due to his commitment with the Fijian men’s sevens team that won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games where he injured his knee
He later aggravated it while playing for Bristol Bears in the Gallagher Premiership before undergoing rehab
During his absence the Flying Fijians had been captained by Levani Botia
Nayacalevu is expected to be given the captaincy’s job in the absence of Radradra
indicated that Radradra would be out of injury rehab by November 5
“Semi was due to be back playing on November 5
which would have enabled him to join us and perhaps play the last game against the French Babaas,” Cotter said
“More importantly he could have spent time with us
bringing his experience and professionalism as a role model.” Cotter indicated that he had spoken with Radradra who was disappointed about the decision made.”
“Semi is disappointed but he will continue his rehab with next year’s Rugby World Cup in mind.”
“Bristol reevaluated Semi’s condition and decided that his return to play would be at the end of November
That effectively takes Semi out of the tour unfortunately.”
who has formed a formidable partnership with Vilimoni Botitu
The Flying Fijian play Scotland on November 5 at the Edinburgh Stadium followed by Ireland on November 12 at Aviva Stadium in Dublin with November 19 clash against the French Barbarians in Lille
