Many mayors are frustrated by drivers using their towns and villages as shortcuts to avoid busy main roads
based on suggested routes provided by the popular navigation app Waze
The Waze app has become essential for many drivers making their way to popular tourist spots on unfamiliar roads or looking to scrape a few minutes off their daily commute to work
It warns drivers where they risk getting bogged down in traffic and recommends alternative routes to save them time
Read more: Why GPS apps will not always suggest the fastest route in France
in many cases it directs drivers down shortcuts through tiny villages.
This is the case for the village of Saint-Montan with 180 residents
which reports 1,000 vehicles a day through its narrow streets from spring to autumn
causing âmonster jamsâ as people leave the A7 motorway and head towards the Gorges de lâArdĂšche
bank holidays and pont days from April 1 to September 30
has put a barrier across a country road on the Lautagne plateau that is commonly suggested by Waze and Google Maps
including many cars with foreign number plates
The road goes past homes and a primary school.

the mairie had to change the communeâs street plan
creating new one-way streets to help manage the overload
cutting traffic by 16% with 2,700 fewer vehicles per day
has put traffic lights near the town entrance that only work in the morning rush hour and
only when the traffic reaches a certain level.
Mayor Michel Bisson said: âThe Francilienne [Ile-de-France ring road] borders our commune and in the morning
you can bypass a part of it by crossing our town
to rejoin it a bit further along â it allows you to gain six minutes
but they direct people based on the journey time so they then cross towns whose infrastructure was not intended to deal with such major traffic flows
âThey have been crossing residential areas at around 8:30 to 9:00 when parents were taking children to primary school
other children were going to the collĂšge and other residents were heading out to work
âThe traffic gets congested and buses take ages to get to the station
It generates lots of problems with daily life.â
He added: âWeâve been working with residents to find solutions including new no-through roads or one-way roads and lights in places where they can slow traffic down and increase the time it takes to cross the town
Making the traffic stop at the new lights gave breathing space to the residents
who could leave their homes with less difficulty
But itâs not been enough to completely solve the underlying problems.â
if it could at least indicate on the app streets that have schools
and which it is therefore preferable to avoid.
Mr Bisson said Waze agreed to this but that he does not know if it has been applied
The mairie also talked to mapmakers who make the street maps the app uses
to ensure they have applied the correct classification to its roads
from 7 for a motorway to 1 for a local lane
but app companies need to have more sense of civic responsibility and social and environmental dimensions
âItâs not enough for them to just indicate the fastest route from A to B â and probably also with commercial interests in mind
such as sending people along routes with restaurants.â
A Waze spokesman said: âWaze helps drivers navigate more safely and conveniently
It routes users using the public roads infrastructure
based on local driving laws and the legal road signs in the area.â
public roads are by their nature accessible to everybody
it is accounted for on the app within days.
It also says it has safety features such as highlighting crash-prone roads or hazards such as potholes
Speeding in villages is another common problem

But that was not the only French church suffering from vandalism recently
Was it youthful hubris or deliberate religious hatred
a gang of minors is responsible for damaging a Catholic church in Cugnaux
The Saint-Laurent de Cugnaux church suffered the start of a fire when a person nearby saw smoke rising
and paintings were broken." This says Albert Sanchez
Sanchez says to be "extremely shocked" and condemns the "act of violence against a religious community." The mayor expressed his solidarity with the Catholic faithful
Various inscriptions were tagged on the church wall
inscriptions in Arabic and several other things were drawn on the wall
Aside from several inscriptions, there was also the sentence "Long live Islam and peace" drawn onto the wall. The Mosque of Lieusaint has "strongly condemned this act of vandalism", Bisson told the media outlet CNews
The Mosque was sceptical that Muslims could have made these inscriptions
It is not the first time that the Lieusaint church was vandalised; the conservative news website Valeurs Actuelles reports
Several statues had been degraded and overthrown
but the police could not arrest the perpetrators of this act

2024Defaced Catholic church building in Lieusaint
| AmauryBucco/TwitterVillagers at a cemetery in Dordogne Department in southwest France were horrified that vandals painted Islamist slogans in French and Arabic on 58 graves
a World War I memorial and tomb art depicting the crucifixion
The defacement happened overnight in Clermont dâExcideuil between March 10 and March 11
A local church building near the cemetery had âRamadan Mubarakâ (âBlessed Ramadanâ) daubed on its doors
âSubmit yourselves to Allah,â âHappy Ramadan non-Muslimsâ and âKoufars,â meaning âunbelievers.â One of the grave slogans read
âFrance is already Allahâs,â according to British newspaper the Daily Mail
Clermont dâExcideuil Mayor Claude Eymery discovered the vandalism on the morning of March 11 and contacted police
He told FranceInfo that he thought such incidents âonly happened elsewhere.âÂ
the French stateâs regional representative
âThe prefect strongly condemns the new act of vandalism committed at the Clermont-dâExcideuil cemetery
A gendarmerie investigation continues under the authority of the PĂ©rigueux public prosecutorâs office
which has opened an investigation into aggravated damage.â
âChristian cemeteries have been tagged with satanist or other messages
But Iâve never heard of a Christian cemetery being tagged with Islamic references,â Cumet told Christian Daily International
but this kind of tagging in the Dordogne â as far as Iâm concerned
immediately came forward to help with clean-up following a request by police
Cumet said police officers took photos and samples and asked the association to clean off the markings quickly
âVandalism of graves are very serious and show a total lack of respect for those who lie there,â Cumet said
âItâs the same disrespect shown to our heroes of the First World War and
We cannot understand what happened in these peopleâs minds
The vandals mainly targeted the Catholicism
âThe weirdo could have tagged the walls of the town hall
but he or she chose Christian symbols,â she said
âJust imagine waking up in your little and peaceful village to go out and discover all of this,â she said
astonishment and indignation were in all the peopleâs hearts that morning.â
Police launched an investigation into the vandalism
but Cumet said no culprits have been caught
churchgoers were upset to discover Islamists had wrecked Philadelphia Evangelical Protestant Church
broke doors and windows and painted slogans
âThe last prophet is Muhammadâ and âJesus is not God.â
France has seen a rise in anti-Christian hate crimes with Islamist motives in recent years
executive director of the Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination against Christians in Europe (OIDACE)
She said similar graffiti was recently found in the Dordogne region
âToday this is the land of gwer [infidels]
âAll these slogans express a claim of superiority of Islam and the targeting of Christians as âunbelieversâ or âinfidels,â which is common in Islamist extremism,â Hoffman told Christian Daily International
âIt seems worrying that the countryâs secularist elite
do not want to acknowledge this dimension of the aggression.â
The reactions of local residents to the cemetery vandalism showed how traumatic such acts can be for a religious community
French politicians need to take further measures to protect Christian communities in the country
âAlthough France has increased its budget for the protection of places of worship due to frequent attacks
politicians also need to take measures to address this inter-religious dimension of anti-Christian hate crimes,â Hoffmann said.In March 2022
French MEP Jean-Paul Garraud challenged the European Commission to address a surge in anti-Christian hate crime in France and other parts of Europe
He asked why there was no coordinator or strategy planned to combat Christophobia
The commission had appointed a coordinator to combat antisemitism in 2015 and another to combat anti-Muslim hatred in 2018
confirmed no coordinator was planned for Christophobia
âThe commission is committed to protect Christians and members of other religious groups from persecution within the EU and does not make any distinction between religious groups,â JourovĂĄ reportedly said
âThe commission has no plans as regards a specific strategy on Christophobia or to appoint a dedicated coordinator on this issue.â

paris-based architect monica donati has completed the first block of a three-phase office complex that occupies the liminal area between city
built perpendicular to the line d’eau
a tranquil canal in the lush lieusaint region, ‘immeuble bambou’ is remarkable in its use of repetitive building systems to seamlessly weave the architecture into the landscape
the building exploits concepts of interstitial space by boldly bifurcating angled masses and then linking them with generous glazing
black mullions delineate constructivist patterns across horizontal bands of windows; however
the bamboo skin is the primary method by which the architecture fractures light and form
and additionally multiplies views of the waterscape and expansive greenery
the gently twisting lines of the bamboo create a sun-shielding envelope
each building is equipped with distinctly colorful loggia which afford optimal views of the canal at a height rendered impossible by the existing promenade
the architectonic language looks toward the developed areas of carré sénart and simultaneously pulls nature into its atrium through visual accessibility and extraordinary cladding.

in the northern Île-de-France region
the restaurant chain has reopened several of its drive-thru stores
The roads soon became gridlocked as people rushed to get their fill of fast food

areas of Europe are seeing signs of the outbreak slowing down
and Norway have begun to lift some restrictions this week
while France and Spain ruled out any relaxation for several weeks
There are currently more than 159,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in France and the death toll stands at 20,796
French officials said on Sunday that although the virus appeared to be under control there
the country's strict lockdown would continue for at least another three weeks
President Emmanuel Macron announced last week that schools would begin to open from 11 May
"It is an epidemic unique in France in modern history and it is not finished," said Prime Minister Édouard Philippe
"We are making progress against this epidemic
The situation is improving slowly but surely..
To think the epidemic is behind us would be an error."
He added: "Our lives after 11 May will not be exactly the same as before the lockdown
Not at once and probably not for a long time."
"We have to learn to live with the virus," Philippe said
"We see the population is not immunised—it may be one day
the circulation of the virus has been restrained
Nor will we have a vaccine before 2021…and at this stage there is no treatment that has been shown to work
That leaves us one instrument: prevention."
