Lina Machado Bejarano (J.D. '19), an associate at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP, has a new title to add to her list of accolades. In 2024, she received the Cameron J. Miller Award for Excellence and Community Service
named after a late associate who exemplified leadership and community involvement
is determined by votes from associates and partners across the firm’s 13 offices
“Being selected to honor Cam’s memory was an incredible honor,” Machado said
“The words my colleagues used in their nominations were humbling and inspiring.”
Adjunct Professor Sidney Welch smiles alongside Machado following the 2024 Cameron J
This award included a $10,000 donation, which she directed to the Georgia State Law Immigration Clinic
which provides direct representation to asylum seekers and victims of human trafficking
I understand the challenges of navigating the immigration system without legal support
The clinic’s work changes lives and trains future immigration attorneys,” she said
Machado has made significant strides in civil litigation, pro bono work, and mentorship within the Latino legal community through her work with the Georgia Latino Law Foundation (GLLF)
She was recognized as a “Rising Star” by both the Georgia Hispanic Bar Association and Georgia Super Lawyers for the second consecutive year in 2024
As a Latina in “Big Law” (the top law firms in the United States)
Machado acknowledges the importance of representation
“Many of us don’t pursue certain career paths because we don’t see people who look or sound like us in those roles
I remember being afraid of becoming a litigator because English is my second language
who were changing that more traditional landscape was an inspiration
I want Latina and Latino law students to know they belong here
That they belong anywhere they want to go.”
Currently a business litigation attorney at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP
Machado balances her demanding caseload with pro bono work
and leadership roles with the GLLF “There’s no formula for balancing it all
but I have a strong support system and work at a firm and with a team that fully supports me and encourages my commitment to community service.”
which Machado generously directed to the Georgia State Law Immigration Clinic
Immigration Law Clinic Director Emily Torstveit Ngara
associate clinical professor and director of the Immigration Clinic
expressed her gratitude for Lina’s generosity and ongoing support
“When I learned that Lina had selected the clinic to benefit from the donation she received as a recognition of both her stellar legal work and her tireless work in support of her community
I was deeply honored.” Ngara also highlighted Lina’s lasting impact on the clinic and its students
“She has done so much for the College of Law
Lina was able to benefit both law students in gaining practical experience through their work in the clinic
as well as the clinic's clients and their communities.”
The donation will further the clinic’s mission by enhancing resources for students and clients alike
It will allow the clinic to hire additional interpreters and expert witnesses to support clients' cases
said Ngara as she explained that the donation will also allow the clinic to hold additional pro se workshops in partnership with community organizations to help unrepresented individuals complete applications for relief from removal or work authorization
This also gives students a different experience than their other casework and provides a valuable service to unrepresented noncitizens who have to submit applications in English

Rebecca Kelly Slaughter and Alvaro Bedoya have been illegally terminated
The Trump administration has made an illegal attempt to fire two Democratic commissioners on the Federal Trade Commission
advancing a fight to change Supreme Court precedent and centralize control of independent agencies in the hands of the chief executive
both of whom served with former chair Lina Khan in the FTC majority under Joe Biden
The three of them made numerous advances over the past three years on antitrust and consumer protection policies
including successful challenges to numerous mergers and new rules cracking down on subscription deception
Since Republican Andrew Ferguson took control of the agency in January, there has been an unusual level of continuity on antitrust issues
though on consumer protection the agency has backed off significantly
More from David Dayen
“The FTC is an independent agency founded 111 years ago to fight fraudsters and monopolists,” Bedoya said in a statement
the president wants the FTC to be a lapdog for his golfing buddies.”
“The law protects the independence of the Commission because the law serves the American people
“Removing opposition voices may not change what the Trump majority can do
but it does change whether they will have accountability when they do it.”
Under current law and precedent, these firings are plainly illegal. In Humphrey’s Executor v. United States (1935)
the Supreme Court ruled that a president cannot remove an FTC commissioner before their term is complete
the Court said that the duties of the FTC were “neither political or executive” but “quasi-judicial and quasi-legislative.” Independent agencies derive their power from Congress
independent commissioners are not purely executive branch officials
Therefore the president is bound by the terms of the statute
and cannot fire FTC commissioners without reason or cause
perhaps hoping to fold these into one big lawsuit that clarifies the president’s powers with respect to independent commissions
the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
and the Federal Election Commission in this manner
It’s clear that Trump is seeking to make a larger point than about just the FTC or any of the other agencies
If he can get the Supreme Court to agree that he is allowed to fire any independent commissioners
Already in an executive order
Trump has asserted that all executive branch officials “are subject to his supervision,” in a shot at Humphrey’s Executor
He also moved to force independent agencies to submit all draft regulations to the White House for review (except for monetary policy actions by the Federal Reserve)
and to force commissions to “consult with the White House on their priorities and strategic plans
The executive order also gives the Office of Management and Budget control over independent commissions’ apportionment of federal dollars
Without the ability to fire top leaders of independent commissions without cause
the attempts at control in the executive order would be a little hollow
even though Trump has confined his firings to Democrats on these commissions for the time being
the warning shots are directed at Republicans as well
this gambit will succeed or fail depending on the Supreme Court’s decision on whether to uphold Humphrey’s Executor
Slaughter and Bedoya will likely be reinstated to their jobs
there won’t really be any more independent agencies
Numerous advocacy groups and public officials condemned the White House for the firings
ranking Democrat on the Senate subcommittee that deals with antitrust
“President Trump’s dismissal of Commissioners Slaughter and Bedoya is not only illegal but also hurts consumers by undermining an independent agency that Congress established to protect consumers from fraud
endorsed the firings of his fellow commissioners in a statement that echoed the extreme power grab being attempted by the administration
Trump is head of the executive branch and vested with all of the executive power in our government,” Ferguson said
“I have no doubts about his constitutional authority to remove commissioners
which is necessary to ensure democratic accountability for our government.” Of course
he might be joining Slaughter and Bedoya on their way out the door

Lina Patton is making the most of her Harold Washington College experience
Lina Patton has always considered herself creative—and she isn’t the only one
As a high schooler at Lindblom Math and Science Academy
Lina’s creativity was so apparent that a teacher encouraged her to apply for an apprenticeship for creative youth at Ogilvy
She got the position around the same time she made the decision to attend Harold Washington College, a decision she calls ‘easy’ because of the Star Scholarship
which would fully cover the cost of her tuition and books
“The Star Scholarship was a huge relief for me,” Lina said
“I didn’t have the funding to pay for college right away
and I didn’t want to rely on student loans or go into debt.”
Lina traveled from her home in Englewood to Ogilvy’s offices downtown three times a week for her apprenticeship
The opportunity sparked her interest in advertising and communications
Lina carried that appreciation for advertising with her
She also began to appreciate the diversity of her classes—and her classmates
I’m able to meet people from so many different backgrounds,” she said
“That’s what I love about this college—that we can all be in class together and learn from each other.”
Having already completed one apprenticeship, Lina was excited when she saw an email about a different work-based learning opportunity with City Colleges’ partner Weber Shandwick
another global communications and public relations agency
She applied for the yearlong position and was hired as one of only two public relations (PR) apprentices for the company
I learned a lot about how to work with influencers
It was really fun to get experience with earned media and to learn from my coworkers
Even senior directors would make time to speak with me,” she said
Lina completed the apprenticeship in October 2024 and plans to graduate with her associate degree in spring 2025
she hopes to transfer to DePaul University to pursue her bachelor’s degree in advertising—a goal her apprenticeships helped her discover
“Apprenticeships allow you to be a beginner,” Lina said
“They give you an opportunity to learn and grow.”
I never imagined I’d one day work in the automotive industry
I told everyone on career day that I wanted to design cars
which sparked my interest in engineering—but the cost of college made that dream feel out of reach

and working to prioritize her mental health throughout it all
I met my now-husband, David, in 2014 when I was volunteering for the Texas Civil Rights Project. I had just gotten back from working in Thailand at Internews Network, an international nonprofit dedicated to training journalists and advocating for press freedom, and then Michael Brown was killed
and I wanted to do more direct civil rights work
I googled “civil rights Texas,” and that’s what came up
I was then working as a medical interpreter but volunteering at the Texas Civil Rights Project
and David had just finished law school and started a one-year fellowship there as an attorney
He never asked me out: I was the one who asked him out
We would sit next to each other in the evening
and I’d say: “I’m really hungry,” and finally we’d go out to eat
I think that encapsulates it: He’s selfless and he’s very sweet
Photo: Jath and Yhen Photo Art WorksAfter almost a decade of dating, we made plans to go to New Zealand in March 2023. I was doing my second Ironman there
But I couldn’t wait that long—I wanted my ring!—and I was driving my staff crazy every weekend thinking that this was going to be the weekend of the proposal
I went to see a play with a friend of mine
and then we went to the post office to pick up our packages
even I (with my famously bad sense of direction) could tell we were driving a different way
and I looked outside and realized we were in front of the Texas Civil Rights Project
David reminded me that I had to get out of the car for him to actually
so we were in the middle of the street when he got down on one knee and opened the box
David said some nice things I was too excited to remember
and I was finally able to update everyone I’d told that I was about to get engaged—which really was everybody and their mother
What I didn’t always tell everyone was that David had used the bulk of his savings to pay off a massive bill I’d received for my mental health treatment
which had the unexpected result of making me less anxious about marriage—alongside everything else—and finally allowed me to accept David’s proposal
One of the key lessons I learned this year was being okay with contradictions and dichotomies
I worked on accepting two conflicting feelings at once: like sadness
or exhaustion over friends’ illnesses or natural disasters in Texas or various work challenges
and that they could exist alongside the growing closeness of my relationship with David
and the joy and excitement I felt around wedding planning and making it to the big day itself
(I continue to believe this mental health conversation is vital for everyone—people need to know what mental health challenges look like and how we can address them.)
Mostly because of the people they brought together
from my mom’s longtime hairdresser and makeup artist—who changed my hairstyle three times over the course of the wedding day—to my best friend
who helped pay for my mental health treatment program and actually dropped me off there
The second was a more traditional—but still pink!—Romona Keveza gown
The pink was meant to reference my pink sapphire engagement ring and honor my grandmother
who could not be at our wedding because she did not want to leave my ailing grandfather’s side—but who also got married in a color that was not white
I wore an Olympia Le-Tan clutch that featured a tuxedo cat that looked just like her
There were too many incredibly special moments of our wedding to relay
but the one I keep coming back to is the vows
We got married at the resort Amanpulo in the Philippines
which is the only property on Pamalican Island
We love snorkeling and scuba diving together
so much so that our engagement party cake was made in the shape of a sea turtle
and when we held hands for the ceremony on a ledge overlooking the ocean and took in our friends reading poems
I was able to really savor the moment and lean fully into my happiness
Photo: Jath and Yhen Photo Art WorksOur wedding weekend was incredible
but so was the small “paper wedding” ceremony we planned in Houston to quietly celebrate signing the official documents that made our marriage legal
A judge friend fit us into his schedule on what turned out to be the Saturday after the 2024 presidential election—I wanted to change the date
Photo: Jath and Yhen Photo Art WorksPhoto: Jath and Yhen Photo Art WorksWe didn’t want it to feel like a wedding
but we also worked really hard not to let the election results ruin the day
David had supported me from the very beginning when I decided to run for Harris County judge shortly after Donald Trump was elected the first time
the various events that comprised my “wedding season” ended up boosting my spirits more than I could have predicted—especially during a time of political turbulence
when I and so many others desperately needed a lift
I wish I’d gotten a photo of that Philippines sunset—but the umbrellas in the wedding pictures look pretty amazing too

FORECASTSHARE PHOTOS & VIDEOFrustration grows as search for missing Afghan child Lina Sardar Khil enters third yearby Yami Virgin and Paul Sanchez
the family of Lina Sardar Khil and the community will gather to remember the 3-year-old who disappeared three years ago
I am reflecting on some of San Antonio's missing persons cases I have investigated after the headlines faded away
I take a closer look at the ups and downs in this year's search for the Afghan child
The last known video of Lina Sardar Khil was in the park of the apartment complex on Fredericksburg Road she shared with her family
But as months passed and media attention faded
Allen says that not knowing gets harder every day
Yami: "How often do Riaz and Sarmina hear from the San Antonio Police Department
They only hear something when the family reaches out to ask
Earlier this year, statements from a man featured on our "Marshals Most Wanted" segment led investigators to search near the apartments
what do you think investigators in your former agency are doing right now?"
There’s a lot of frustration trying to piece things together and learn what happened
I know the FBI is doing everything they can as a resource for SAPD
Fox SA provided those sketches last year to the police
Lina’s father recognized the Afghan man but didn’t believe he was involved
"The family believes she may have been taken and sold
Fox SA requested an update on the case from SAPD but has not yet received a response
If you have any information you can call SAPD's Missing Persons Unit at 210-207-7660. You can also reach out to the family by contacting Project Absentis by clicking here.

culminating in the completion of the Pietro Building in November 2024
This addition significantly increases MASP’s capacity for exhibitions
7,821-square-meter building doubles the museum’s total footprint and allows for a more ambitious program that reflects the institution’s growing prominence in the global art scene

The expansion of Museu de Arte São Paulo by Júlio Neves and METRO Arquitetos Associados carries a deep reverence for its origins. By naming the original structure after architect Lina Bo Bardi and the new building after the museum’s first artistic director
the institution completes a symbolic tribute to its founding trio
It’s a thoughtful gesture that embeds history into the very fabric of the museum’s built environment
While the Pietro Building celebrates the inauguration of its new galleries in March 2025
it construction reached a major milestone in November 2024
MASP’s total operational space jumps from 10,485 to 21,863 square-meters
‘MASP grew and became bigger than its building,’ said CEO Heitor Martins
noting that expansion wasn’t just desired — it was necessary
It’s not only a spatial shift but a philosophical one
signaling the museum’s role as an anchor institution on what may be Brazil’s most culturally important boulevard
the expansion doubles MASP’s size with the addition of the 14-story Pietro Building
With São Paulo’s museum expansion comes a bevy of new capabilities: enhanced educational facilities
and an infrastructure tailored to a more inclusive and diverse range of programming
These aren’t cosmetic upgrades — they’re structural affirmations of MASP’s mission to be plural
One of the most transformative effects of the expansion is its impact on access
With only one percent of MASP’s 11,000-piece collection previously on view
the Pietro Building unlocks new gallery space
allowing long-term exhibitions in the original Lina building and dynamic temporary shows in the Pietro building
according to artistic director Adriano Pedrosa
will offer ‘breathing space’ in the calendar and more thoughtful narrative arcs in curatorial programming
A museum is not just confined to its galleries
São Paulo’s museum expansion also strengthens operational infrastructure
expanding back-of-house areas like storage
These unsung spaces are essential for managing a growing collection and ambitious schedule
Perhaps the most literal connection between the old and the new with the expansion of Museu de Arte São Paulo is the underground passage being constructed beneath the museum and Rua Prof
This subterranean link allows visitors to move easily between the two buildings
the ticket office moves to the Pietro Building
liberating the famed vão livre — the open span under Lina’s building — as a true civic plaza
The lower floors of the Pietro Building are transparent
echoing the openness of the original structure
The upper floors are wrapped in perforated and corrugated metal sheets
lending a monolithic visual identity that balances presence with permeability
Natural light filters in through carefully positioned apertures — subtle interventions that acknowledge the needs of both art and architecture
but following an architecture that would highlight that developed by Lina without competing with it
the original building is named after Lina Bo Bardi
while the expansion honors Pietro Maria Bardi
an underground passage will connect the two buildings while freeing the iconic Vão Livre for public use

Rilwan Balogun
On Wednesday, the Houston community was shocked to learn of the sudden passing of U.S. Congressman and former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.
MORE INFO: Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner passes away at 70
Many politicians across Houston and Harris County have voiced their support and reflected on Turner’s legacy as a key leader in the community
KPRC 2′s Rilwan Balogun spoke exclusively with Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo about how she and the city are reacting to this tragedy
Here’s a full transcription of their conversation:
just kind of talk to us a little bit about just how you’re feeling right now about the news of Congressman Turner
Everything he wanted to do for Harris County in the Congress
and now there are so many of us mourning his passing
Totally surprised and taken aback by what’s happened
he’s been a leader in the community pretty much his entire career
So the number of people that he has mentored
from the [COVID-19 pandemic] and winter freeze and all kinds of disasters
to the Astros [World Series wins] and the parade and so many experiences
appreciated his respect for me and his in support of me
our deepest condolences to his family and to so
I’ve spent the morning speaking on the phone with just
all kinds of people who are just as devastated
“How is it possible that a kid from Acres Homes and an immigrant kid become the mayor and the county executive of place as large as Houston and Harris County?” And so
we’ll get through this together as a community in the days that come
Rilwan Balogun: You kind of alluded to it as judge and former mayor
you all had to work closely to get things moving day to day
Kind of talk to us a little bit about that legacy
Judge Lina Hidalgo: It’s what makes it so hard to really process that he’s gone
I stood by his side during his elections and through the difficult times
people always talked about our differences of opinion during COVID
But you have to learn to respect each other
And I heard from so many people that for decades
the relationship between Harris County and the City of Houston was weak
was to the detriment of the people of the community
So we were very proud that even though we had different perspectives on some things
we were able to work that through and work together
just imagine trying to figure out how to navigate a pandemic
I’ve been reaching out to some of his staff as well
And he’s somebody that I was getting ready to work with now that he was in the Congress
and I thought it was just a perfect capstone for his career
His friends are I know his constituents are
Rilwan Balogun: You kind of alluded to it here that most of his adult life has been serving others in his role in the state legislature
He’s somebody who could have gone and worked at a firm and made all the money
He was elected very young to the State House
He really wanted to lift the future generations
because he was one of those young people that came in fresh with a fresh perspective and really grew from there
but also a legacy through all the people that he supported
big hole in our hearts and in Harris County
we expected for him to be in the Congress for a good few years
Rilwan Balogun: What are some of those qualities from him that you kind of took on as you watched him in his various roles that you’ve taken up as judge
and so oftentimes he would go first and then I would go or vice versa
And then he would just turn into a preacher
it was just you’d be totally enraptured by his speaking
that is something that we both enjoyed when we had the opportunity to be out in the community together
that’s something that I’m really proud of and I like to bring to my role
let’s just be people He did that; he was brave enough to do that
“How do you how do you structure your office
How do you handle this kind of thing?” And I remember
the first meeting I had the day after my election was with him
And the first thing we did together was appoint the chairman of the port
So I think we’ve made a lot of good decisions together
but it turns out not to be the best one in retrospect
it was it was just a real a real interesting time for us
we were standing together because of the ITC fire
The city lent us their air monitoring equipment
We didn’t have it at the time and that was the precedent for years of work together
I know you said you’re still processing this
You would just you would just see him everywhere
and it was the kind of thing where we would gravitate toward each other because we knew each other well
and you never know what you’re going to encounter
just to [seal] yourself for whatever’s coming your way
Here’s someone I’m going to just go stand by
And I know we’re in this together.” And I want to think it was the same for him
And we’d joke and we just sort of have our own little inside jokes
I was telling him about some funny story that had just happened to me prior
Rilwan Balogun: What does [this loss] do to the Harris County Democratic Party
Judge Lina Hidalgo: It’s just been a brutal
certainly locally and representatives to our various levels of government
And people think about it differently according to their faith
This is certainly not something we expected, but the conversations I keep having is we’re going to get through this together. When I first heard of his passing, my thought was, “I got a call from the Congresswoman [Sheila Jackson Lee]
We are all focused on supporting his daughter
they knew each other since before they were in elective office
he’s heading to DC with his daughter and then the rest of us are here
ready to support them and just supporting each other as we get through this
Q: What would your message be to the folks in the congressional district
you just kind of mentioned that this is now the second biggest loss for the folks in that district losing their representative
Judge Lina Hidalgo: It is a historic district
It is a district that has been through a lot and seen a lot of positive changes
but I think the district is nothing if not strong
And we’re all going to be focused to see how we can best support those folks
we’re watching out as anything takes place

In one of her last acts as the chair of the Federal Trade Commission
Kathy Hochul and legislative leaders urging them to outlaw “unfair and abusive” business practices in the wake of the Trump administration
19 – one day before President Donald Trump’s inauguration – Khan applauded recent actions by the state to increase consumer protections
But she warned about uncertainty in the field with the new administration
expressing the need for the state to pass a new law
“Given potential changes in how federal enforcers approach consumer protection in the coming years
equipping state enforcers with this additional authority is especially critical,” Khan wrote
Hochul included a measure to ban unfair and abusive business practices in her budget last year, which would build on the state’s existing laws against deceptive practices. State lawmakers have also introduced the Consumer and Small Business Protection Act
which is slightly broader and permits class action lawsuits against businesses that engage in unfair
The budget measure ultimately did not make it into the final version of last year’s state budget
and the Consumer and Small Business Protection Act has not passed yet
would adopt the “unfairness authority” that the FTC has at the federal level
which Khan wrote in her letter is critical
“The flexibility that unfairness authority affords has been crucial to the Commission’s efforts to protect the American people in an ever-evolving economy over almost a century,” she wrote
Khan credited it in particular with FTC action to protect consumers from unscrupulous tech practices employed by businesses
such as Rite Aid’s use of artificial intelligence-based face recognition that often misidentified shoplifters
Khan also referenced an issue close to the governor’s heart: child online safety
Hochul has lauded landmark laws approved last year meant to protect children’s privacy online and restrict the use of algorithmic feeds when minors use social media
Khan wrote that the unfairness authority is “integral to protecting children and teens online,” citing a recent case where the FTC punished a company for promoting anonymous messaging apps to children
This is at least the second such letter that the FTC has sent to Hochul and leaders. Last February, the then-heads of the commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection and Office of Policy Planning wrote a similar letter as state leaders considered including consumer protections in last year’s budget
