Doria is 15 years old and lives in Paradise
It's a housing estate in the Parisian suburb of Livry-Gargan
When her parents arrived there from Morocco in the mid 1980s her mother took one look at their tiny two-room flat and threw up
So much for their aspirations to make a new life as major players in a sophisticated French black and white movie and live the European dream
Doria and her mum are just bit-part actors and "our scriptwriter's got no talent
He's never heard of happily ever after."
from her own unique and acerbic point of view
has recently deserted his wife and daughter
returning to Morocco to find a younger spouse to give him the son he so desperately wants
Doria swallows her hurt and disappointment like globs of phlegm then spits back at the world as she describes her life unfolding towards her 16th birthday
is overworked and underpaid at the Formula 1 Motel in Bagnolet
Doria herself is struggling at school and despises the patronising attitude of the various social workers allotted to her "half-family"
This is an existence lived on handouts and credit at the local mini-market
where the only clothes her mum can afford for the teenager are from the charity shop or bargain basement
Not that Doria's life was much more fabulous when her father was around - providing him with a steady supply of beer bottles
guiding him home when he was drunk then disposing of the empties was not exactly a quintessential experience of nurturing parenthood
The one guy Doria can turn to for some understanding is a spliff-smoking layabout called Hamoudi
who didn't finish school because he was sent to prison and who recites Rimbaud
at least he doesn't have a pizza face (of acne) like "neeky Nabil"
the clever kid with a full family including a nice dad "who never hits him"
who comes over to help Doria with her French citizenship course
This is very much a "year in the life"
school and the popular influences from TV and music that piece together to create a rich picture of a key year of transition for Doria
There's a wicked wit at play and lots of sharp perceptions
When I started reading I wondered if I would at some point find the full-on force of Doria's voice wearing
It is a testament to both author and translator that Doria not only takes the reader with her
but actually allows them inside her head and into the world she inhabits
What might turn out to be a diatribe with no progression reveals itself instead to be a sly evocation of a reject of a girl growing up
into a rather more self-valuing young woman
The Doria at the very start of the book who disparages the stains that look like "dried sick" on test cards of her "old
ugly" psychologist is not quite the same as the one who leaves the last session a year later
She might still regard the psychologist as "old" but she is also able to realise that this moment is like "the first time I rode a bike without stabilisers"
Faiza Guene's sassy monologue of a book has been translated from French with streetwise relish by Sarah Adams
who provides a useful glossary of Arabic and slang terms for the uninitiated
this isn't just about the adolescence of Doria
It is also an irreverent evocation of living in an immigrant north African community in Paris viewed from the perspective of a first-generation French girl
What is surprisingly heartening is that Guene
in allowing Doria to vent her resentful opinions on Muslim bigotry
general misogyny and the inadequacies of the welfare system
also allows her to reveal the invaluable communal support and educational benefits that enable Doria and her mother to climb out of the victim rut
And this is where the worth of this engaging book really lies - in applying a dose of vitality and a strong dash of humour to some very fraught contemporary problems

Mickeymickey@disney.comManage MyDisney AccountLog OutMuslim police officer was among victims of Paris attackFriday
2015An injured person is transported to an ambulance after a shooting
at the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo's office
France -- The last of the 12 victims slain in the terror attack on the French newspaper Charlie Hebdo was a police officer - the son of immigrants from mainly Muslim North Africa - who was shot dead on the sidewalk by one of the assailants as they started their getaway
Police officials identified him as Ahmed Merabet
a campaign of solidarity quickly caught fire on social media
using the phrase "Je Suis Ahmed" - I Am Ahmed
That echoed the campaign of support for the satirical newspaper that spread widely after the attack
using the slogan "Je Suis Charlie."
French news reports gave varying ages for Merabet
though the police union to which he belonged said he was in his 30s
He reportedly had eight years of police service
and was assigned to the neighborhood where Wednesday's attack occurred
Video footage taken by an onlooker that surfaced on the Internet after the attack appeared to show a wounded Merabet on the pavement
raising a hand as though appealing for mercy before he was fatally shot in the head by one of the three gunmen
During their attack on the newspaper office
the assailants had shouted "Allahu akbar!" - Arabic for "God is great!" - and police were investigating their possible ties to a Yemen-based terrorist group
Merabet was "very discreet and conscientious," police union spokesman Rocco Contento told the newspaper Le Figaro
"We're all extremely shocked."
the suburb of Livry-Gargan in the northeastern suburbs of Paris
announced Thursday that he and the other victims would be commemorated at a ceremony Sunday at the city hall
who cited the sensitivity of the case in requesting anonymity
said Merabet's parents immigrated to France from predominantly Muslim North Africa
The officials said he didn't know whether Merabet was actively practicing the religion
The other slain officer was Franck Brinsolaro
a married police veteran who served on the bodyguard detail for the slain editor of Charlie Hebdo
The union official said Charbonnier would sometimes invite Brinsolaro for meals at the famed Closerie des Lilas restaurant in southern Paris
Brinsolaro was married to the editor of a weekly newspaper in northern France
The death of Merabet - with his North African origins - recalled a series of gun attacks in southern France in 2012 that killed three French paratroopers of North African descent

A total of 60 Cora supermarkets across France are being rebranded to Carrefour from today (October 1
after Carrefour acquired the group in July 2023
The transfer to Carrefour will happen in three stages
The supermarkets and hypermarkets affected are expected to remain open throughout, with a gradual changeover between branded goods and new items, Carrefour has said in a press release
First of all the branding will be replaced
and then the Carrefour product range will be gradually introduced on the shelves.
“Branding and working clothes will then be used to finalise the changeover
before a major sales event to celebrate the new brand,” Carrefour said
Only one Cora supermarket has closed: Bourgoin-Jallieu (Isère)
which was deemed not profitable enough by Cora itself
Carrefour says it does not have any plans to end working contracts with any of the Cora staff: “[We are] very happy to hand over the Carrefour brand to the 17,000 employees who have joined us.” This is all of the Cora workers

The changeover comes one day after it was confirmed that 21 supermarkets under the brand Casino are set to close in France after failing to find a buyer
with almost 1,000 people expected to lose their jobs

A tunnel boring machine has broken through at the future Clichy-Montfermeil station on the under-construction Line 16 of the Paris Metro
The tunnel boring machine (TBM) Mireille finished boring 2.2km from the Bel-Air site in Chelles
It is the latest milestone on the Grand Paris Express
the £28bn project to deliver 200km of new metro lines and 68 new stations in the suburbs of Paris
which is under development by Italian firm Webuild and French company NGE
The firms celebrated the emergence of Mireille with the mayors or Clichy-sous-Bois and Montfermeil
both of whom are representatives of the client Société du Grand Paris
The TBM will soon continue on its journey northwards
boring another 3.1km through the municipalities of Livry-Gargan and Sevran to reach the work site at Mare au Chanvre in Sevran
There it will meet Webuild and NGE’s other TBM
which is tunnelling the line from north to south
Webuild and NGE are tunnelling 11km for the 29km Line 16 and creating four new stations
It follows on from their partnership on Lot 4 of the Grand Paris Express
which extended Line 14 southward by 4.1km to reach Orly Airport
Line 16 will run between Saint-Denis Pleyel and Noisy-Champs
carrying an estimated 200,000 passengers a day
Another recent TBM breakthrough marked the completion of tunnelling on a common section of Lines 16 and 17 for the project

setting new national records in her age group for both 1500m and 10km
Her drive to succeed in triathlon was unwavering however
as she punched well above her weight as a teenager in both relay and individual events

and she headed to the event in Japan as a contender for a top-end finish
she would be left frustrated in the individual race as a puncture saw her unable to finish
having endured already endured a sub-par swim leg by her lofty standards
Her fortunes would change in the inaugural Mixed Relay event though as she helped the French team – also featuring Dorian Coninx
Léonie Périault and Vincent Luis – to a memorable bronze medal

With its huge entrance gate, the Parc de la Poudrerie is a real eye-catcher - and there's more to come
the site was far from being a green space as it is today: it was Napoleon III who built a poudrerie
to meet the military needs of the French army
far from residential areas to allow experimentation without endangering the population
The engineer Gustave Maurouard designed the factory and supervised its construction
the Sevran powder plant became the first in the world to use steam-powered machines
the Poudrerie de Sevran remained in operation for a century
until 1973: among the famous chemists who worked there was Alfred Nobel
the Poudrerie proved to be a very useful factory
that the imploder for France's first atomic bomb was developed
The poudrerie eventually closed a few years later
before becoming a museum surrounded by a huge park
Since then, numerous species of animals and plants have been identified in the park, making it an area of significant interest for local biodiversity: between the large century-old trees, the meadows and the park's three ponds, the area is a delight for small animals, amphibians, ducks and numerous birds. But above all, Parc de la Poudrerie boasts an incredible wealth of history: from the Cartoucherie to the Pavillon Marouard
the vestiges of the site's industrial past are listed as Historic Monuments

A horrifying act of violence unfolded Monday evening in Livry-Gargan (Seine-Saint-Denis)
as a 27-year-old man was brutally stabbed to death in the middle of a busy road
Emergency responders arrived to find the victim lying in the street in cardio-respiratory arrest
he was pronounced dead at the scene just after 9 p.m
Eyewitnesses described a disturbing scene as the attacker
stabbed his victim multiple times before casually walking away
he later returned to the crime scene under the gaze of bystanders and motorists before eventually surrendering himself to authorities
Known for its high concentration of migrant populations and socio-economic struggles
the area has frequently made headlines for violent crime
it has transformed into a symbol of France’s broader cultural and political upheavals
and rising insecurity have fueled growing fears about lawlessness and state control
Police officers from the Aulnay-sous-Bois territorial contact brigade (BTC) arrested the suspect a few hundred meters from the murder site
authorities recovered a knife and a machete believed to have been used in the attack
Social media was soon flooded with amateur videos capturing parts of the crime
amplifying the gruesome nature of the attack
The footage allegedly shows the suspect continuing his assault while the victim lay defenseless on the ground
The Bobigny prosecutor’s office has launched a murder investigation
with the case now in the hands of the Seine-Saint-Denis Departmental Judicial Police Service (SDPJ 93)
Officials have yet to confirm whether the suspect has a prior criminal or psychiatric history
the brazen nature of the attack and its public setting have sent shockwaves through the community
Authorities urge anyone with information related to the incident to come forward as they piece together the circumstances leading to this fatal attack
