European data center firm Penta Infra has acquired Sungard’s data center and colocation business in Paris
The company this week announced it had acquired the data center campus in the Lognes area of the French capital
Penta Infra said it will also acquire the colocation business and continue to deliver data center services ‘to the majority’ of the existing client base
located at 93 Cr des Petites Écuries and consisting of two data centers and a workplace facility
covers more than 16,000 sqm (172,000 sq ft) and reportedly has “significant opportunities” for expansion
Penta said the site will be developed into a 10MW data center

French provider known for acquisition buys in Ile-de-France
French carrier-neutral provider Euclyde has bought a data center with 2,000 sq m (21,500 sq ft) of white space near Paris in Ile-de-France
Euclyde-DC6 was previously owned by HSBC banking group
whose total size is 5,500 sq m (59,000 sq ft) joins other Euclyde data centers in locations including Sophia-Antipolis
Euclyde says the acquisition is "part of a vast national structuring project which will be announced in the coming months." There are no details to share about this yet
Euclyde plans to invest €10 million ($10.9m) in the facility
according to its announcement: "The investment will be significant to make this data center very close to Paris a showcase of excellence

In 2002 he had replaced his first airplane
which he flew for 300 hours before grounding it for a thorough refurbishment that ended up taking five years
The 310 returned to service in August 2013
at which time the pilot renewed his multiengine rating
he flew in the 310 to Seo de Urgel in eastern Spain
After a stay of several weeks during which he made a number of flights between airfields in Spain and France
he and a companion set off on the return flight to Hawarden Airport
The flight was uneventful until its final seconds
on final approach to Runway 22 in fine weather
and there was a sudden increase in engine sound before it pitched up
The pilot died at the scene; his companion
Two photographs taken by a casual plane spotter confirmed witness accounts of the airplane’s final gyration
taken a few hundredths of a second before impact
it is 10 feet above the ground in an inverted
and so investigators were able to glean a good deal of information from the wreckage
Damage to the blades of the right propeller
and the fact that it had been twisted off the crankshaft
indicated that its engine had been developing power on impact; the blades of the left propeller
bent backward but not in the plane of rotation
are the mains and are used for takeoff and landing — were nearly empty: Half a gallon remained in the left
the 310 had auxiliary 20.5-gallon wing tanks; each contained eight gallons of fuel
The injector distributor on the left engine was half empty
Since the outlets to the injectors are halfway up the sides of the distributor body
half empty is functionally equivalent to empty
It seemed that with remarkably unlucky timing the left engine had run out of fuel on short final
The pilot may have attributed the resulting leftward drift to a gust of wind
It was a reaction that was reasonable for an approach that went unstable at the last moment
but not for a twin flying below its minimum single-engine control speed
The examiner who renewed the pilot’s multiengine qualification described his flying
He was said by his pilot father and by various acquaintances to have been meticulous
and particularly attentive to fuel planning
He always checked fuel levels with a dipstick before flight and “would have been aware of the exact quantity of fuel required for a flight.” He was also concerned about fuel cost and carefully adjusted his power settings for best economy
and he stayed abreast of fuel prices at different airfields
just before the accident flight he had phoned ahead to Hawarden to compare the fuel price there with that at his departure airport of Lognes
Avgas was about 53 cents a gallon less at Hawarden
Investigators examined the fuel system and found no faults
The quantity gauges and fuel flow indicators operated normally and were correctly calibrated
They then reconstructed the likely fuel purchases and use for the accident flight and the one preceding it
and compared them with the actual groundspeeds and times made good as recorded on the pilot’s tablet computer
His assumptions about wind for this flight are unknown
The actual headwinds over France were stronger than forecast
for unknown reasons — perhaps just sightseeing — the leg from Lognes to the Channel had lasted 15 minutes longer than it should have
The default groundspeed programmed into the computer would have resulted in a time of two hours 34 minutes for the 411 nm trip; the actual elapsed time was three hours five minutes
At the pilot’s customary fuel burn of 21 gph
he would have used about 10 gallons more than the computer predicted for no-wind conditions
(The calculations in the accident report make no allowance for taxi and takeoff.)
But why did the pilot — especially this pilot
who was generally so interested in fuel — allow his main tanks to run dry without using the fuel in his aux tanks
the Air Accidents Investigation Branch concluded that he had carried the aux tank fuel — about 45 minutes’ worth — untouched from Spain and did not intend to use it on this flight; that he took only as much fuel at Lognes as he expected to use
but underestimated the duration of the flight; and that
making mental calculations of fuel and distance remaining
he failed to recognize until late in the flight that his main tank reserves were getting extremely low
“Although he would not have intended or expected to land with such a low fuel state in the main tanks,” the report concludes
“the fine weather conditions of the day and his familiarity with Hawarden may have been factors in his apparent acceptance of the situation.”
The other aspect of the accident to reflect upon is the loss of control
Hawarden has a single runway 6,700 feet long with 1,000-foot concrete underruns and overruns
The wind at the time of the accident was 280 degrees at 5 knots
The 310 was over the centerline and about 65 feet above the ground when it crossed the threshold of the Runway 22 underrun
Its speed was about 70 knots — slightly below the minimum control speed of 75 knots and well below the recommended minimum approach speed of 90 knots
From the gradually decreasing slope of the altitude profile recorded by the onboard GPS
it is apparent that the pilot had already begun his flare
At this moment the 310 began to drift to the left
Since the main tank fuel gauges must have been indicating empty
the pilot should have been expecting an engine to quit at any moment; but a left drift was consistent with a 60-degree right crosswind
and he may not have immediately recognized its real cause
If he attributed the drift to a gust of wind and added power to arrest his descent
only the right engine would have responded
lifting the right wing and turning the airplane still more to the left
still descending and 20 or more degrees off heading
instinctive addition of power to arrest the deteriorating situation led to the loss of control
in the calm of a hangar this pilot could have given an accurate account of the relationship between power level and minimum control speed
Precise modulation of the right engine’s power might — perhaps — have permitted him to level the wings
maintain height and move back to the runway with room to land
But surprise and precision are seldom found together

The helicopter pilot taken hostage and forced to help heavily armed men spring a notorious French criminal from prison has spoken publicly for the first time about his ordeal
Stéphane Buy told how he was expecting to give a flying lesson to two men; instead
knocked briefly unconscious and ordered to take a group of masked men to break Rédoine Faïd out of jail
a serial criminal serving 25 years for his part in a failed robbery in 2010 in which a police officer died
an experienced pilot with 3,000 flying hours
one aged around 50 and the second in his twenties
“It was the second or third time I’d seen them. They’d already done an initiation flight with me and it had gone very well. I thought it was a father who wanted to treat his son. It was a flying lesson like any other,” he told RTL radio
“It was at that moment everything changed and they began to threaten me. I said we couldn’t take off with so little fuel, and they said: ‘Then get fuel quickly.’”
His voice breaking, Buy added: “They led me to believe my family was in danger.”

“I wasn’t resisting; I didn’t have any choice with two Colts held to my head.”
Buy said he was then ordered to take off again
but had no flight plan or any idea of which direction to go

I was still being held with a Colt against my head.”
Buy said his nightmare truly began after the Alouette II
“At this point the men became really angry
Suddenly I was being hit harder and harder with the gun butts
but each time the red light came on and it wouldn’t start
“I suggested we get out and try to solve the problem from the electro-mechanical box on the outside
It was then I saw these men completely hooded in outfits like the Raid or GIGN [French rapid intervention forces] in the helicopter.”

“Maybe they thought I was faking a breakdown
but I felt completely helpless in front of that engine that I had tried to restart five
I took a blow to the head and I fell to the ground unconscious for several moments
They picked me up … I tried another connection … finally the engine started and we took off in a hurry.”
The gunmen ordered Buy to fly low over fields “clearly to avoid radar” while they looked for the prison
“I asked them: ‘What do I do now?’ They made me pass directly over the prison
I was too busy concentrating on what was a tricky manoeuvre to be worried for my safety
“I landed in a triangular courtyard on a piece of Tarmac about 1.5 metres wide lined with flowers
It was a precise move but that is what I am specialised in
leaving a commando with me who ordered me to rise to 1.5 metres and do a half turn in the courtyard
“I was then told to hold the helicopter just about the ground and wait
It was extremely precise move to hold it at around 3cms for 10 minutes
“My worry was that the level of fuel was going down
And I didn’t know where they would take me.”
While Buy hovered in the prison’s main courtyard
the only one not protected by anti-aircraft netting
the gunmen cut through a prison door using an angle grinder and burst into the visiting room where Faïd was talking to his brother
I didn’t know who was on board; he [Faïd] was pretty quiet
They told me to fly towards Roissy [Charles de Gaulle] airport but not the airport itself.“Then they ordered me to land in an alley near a Total petrol station next to a fast road … Everyone got out
I heard them talking about petrol and bleach and I knew they were going to try to set the Alouette on fire.”
The helicopter was found partially burned near Gonesse
Buy was taken to hospital where he was treated for shock
It is the second time in five years that Faïd has broken out of jail
The French authorities believe the gang may have flown drones over the prison in recent months to become familiar with its layout in preparation for the raid

A top garda based in France for Euro 2016 has warned fans to stick together and obey French officers “at all times”
Superintendent Gerry Delmar is leading a team of eight gardai at the tournament in France
Some members will travel with the fans to Bordeaux and Lille while two senior officers will work at the nerve centre of the Interior Ministry in Lognes on the outskirts of Paris
Independent.ie visited the centre this week where Supt Delmar
explained that police from all competing nations are working together to tackle potential hooliganism and keep fans safe

Supt Delmar explained: "The Irish fans are very welcome in Europe
If some fans do get out of line we will warn them and help them out.”
He continued: “My advice is that they are in a state of emergency over here
I'd ask them to certainly bring their passports with them
Obey the French police and authorities at all times
There will be heightened security at the fan zones and each of the games
“The grounds open two and a half hours beforehand so certainly plan your travel and come early
“I'd also ask them to look out for each other
Let them know where they are at all times.”
Supt Delmar explained that gardaí will be on the ground and and distinctively dressed in a uniform
Supt Delmar is joined in his team by an inspector
A number of the officers have worked at League of Ireland games and would have extensive experience with football supporters
They are joined at the centre in Lognes by officers from the 23 other nations taking part in Euro 2016
The operation is headed by Superintendent Antoine Boutonnet
the head of the national division against hooliganism and supported by Europol and Interpol
He explained that the team is on the lookout for approximately 3,000 known football thugs who are banned from various stadia across the continent
It's very important for us to work together with European connections in order to manage the supporters
“We are working all together with each country to watch the movement of hooligans
We exchange the intelligence about the movement of supporters in general and the hooligans in particular.”
Supt Boutonnet explained that there are a huge number of potential trouble-makers at the event
“It is difficult to have a number of hooligans but I can say that we have 3,000 people who are banned from stadium in their country around Europe
And these guys are banned from coming to France.”
Last night football supporters from England clashed with their Russian counterparts in Marseilles
Officers have been closely monitoring the English fans and believe there may be a further flashpoint at the England versus Wales game in Lens on June 16
