The project has established a residentialisation programme. The term “residentialisation” originated in the 2000s and follows the first phase of rehabilitation of housing estates operated from the 80s.
West ElevationThese defined elements will contrast to areas of lush vegetation. The wooden and concrete structures are characterized by their spatial qualities and will thus function similar to classical elements of the romantic garden such as follies, bandstands, pavilions, belvederes, terraces and fountains, and will complement the existing landscape to create an urban park. Thus, the spaces between each residential unit and crossroads will be marked by green zones.
© Julien LanooThe St. Hilaire’s esplanade is completely redesigned as a public outdoor space to be in balance with the surrounding dense vegetation. This space is focused around a children’s playground, thus creating an area for interaction and community building between the young population of the neighbourhood. This is achieved through an easy to access, three- tier compact structure, entitled «Quartier general»
© Julien LanooThe first two tiers of «Quartier general» are used as playground, with the third tier operating as a public terrace. The structure is formed out of wooden frames with perforated metal sheet cladding, providing safety and privacy for the children. The outdoor area features two slides, a trampoline, climbing nets, adventure courses, all 25m x4m, rising up to 6m high.
© Julien LanooThe playground arouses curiosity and attracts families
which will stimulate activity and community in the neighborhood
This unique public facility on its own serves as a source of pride for residents
The playful and sports facilities in themselves have tremendous potential for urban development because they project directly on the image if the neighbourhood

AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function
but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style
The Lormont building's residents are protected from the noisy street by a metal-clad facade
Two rows of duplex apartments inside the Lormont building feature impressive double height living areas with skylights
The Lormont building offers great views towards the Gironde River
The team's second project in Bordeaux is the Armagnac housing development
Size and light were both key factors in the design solution of all the Bordeaux housing projects
such as the Armagnac development seen here
The Armagnac housing development is situated in a former industrial zone
also designed by Habiter Autrement and Atelier Jean Nouvel
had an existing pine tree as its starting point and inspiration
The Cenon building's clever E-shape gives half of the apartments a triple orientation
Planted close to the Cenon housing development
a set of young pine trees will grow into a small pine wood that will complement the project
The Cenon building's foldable glass facades open up the interior towards expansive views of Bordeaux
hinting at her desire to explore the field of public housing and quality urban dwelling
a collaboration with Atelier Jean Nouvel (for which Habiter Autrement acted as the lead architects)
is three social housing developments in Bordeaux
These flats are 50 percent (or more) larger than usual
then we had simple façade materials and interiors
you have this strict brief that you need an entrance hall
We worked with open lofts and tried to find new ways of dividing the space.
How did the different environments in Bordeaux inspire your design decisions
In the competition brief they asked for one type of apartment that could adapt to every site. We did the opposite. We started with the site every time, then developed a typology that enhanced it in some way. In Armagnac it was an old industrial site, so we decided to make it like New York lofts with roof terraces
we worked with cheaply built wooden furniture
Lormont was a reaction to the existing master plan
We developed a saw shape to maximise views
And you have a cinematographic view of the bridge
Does your emphasis on light have to do with where you grew up
I cannot sit inside in good conscience when it's sunny outside because I grew up in northern Sweden near the polar circle
I think that in Sweden you are extremely conscious about the sun
probably more than when you grow up somewhere with abundant light
escapism and design stories from around the world direct to your inbox
Please talk to us a bit about your collaboration with Jean Nouvel
he doesn't need to spend lots of time on something before he gets a clear idea of what he wants to do
so the whole production was done in my office
Then we had brainstorming sessions together and discussed certain key issues
We share the basic idea that a project should always be a mutation of something that's already there - the built context or landscape
And he's one of the few 'star' architects interested in the question of social housing
I have a housing project under construction in Paris. The space is not as generous as in Bordeaux but we decided to make double-height loft apartments. And we are working on a stadium with a green roof in Spain
It's on hold but I would like to see it happen
What do you like about collaborating?
It's only by balancing your ideas with someone that you really get further
We often bring in people from other domains: artists
How has the global financial crisis affected your work
and if you want to develop your own thinking
It was not the right time if you look at the economic situation
As the clock struck midnight on December 31
France saw a surge in violence and destruction across the nation
with police making hundreds of arrests amid widespread incidents of vandalism and violent clashes
emphasized the widespread use of fireworks
targeting both private property and law enforcement
a two-year-old child in Lyon suffered severe facial injuries and is at risk of permanent disability
a person sustained critical injuries after mishandling a firework
an apartment was destroyed by a fire sparked by a firework
The violence was not limited to attacks on property; some of the arrests were directly linked to assaults on law enforcement officers
Retailleau condemned the acts as "the product of a savage society" and called for a judicial response that matches the severity of the violence
“These acts of violence are the result of a savage society represented by cowards
thugs who target the property of ordinary French citizens
often those who cannot afford to protect their vehicles in private parking lots,” Retailleau stated
further stressing the need for justice to be served
The scale of violence marked a stark contrast to the previous year
then-Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin had praised a New Year’s Eve without significant incidents
with 690 vehicles burned and 490 arrests made
This year’s figures paint a more troubling picture
underscoring ongoing challenges in maintaining public order during holiday celebrations
The community of Lormont in Bordeaux came out in numbers to watch the FIJI Water Flying Fijians train at their sporting ground the Stade Jule Ladoumegue on Thursday
It was the team’s last training there as they leave for Toulouse to face Portugal
As many as 1000 adults and schoolchildren filled the pavilion and lined the side of the ground to get autographs and pictures with the players
who played for the Bordeaux Begles from 2017 to 2020
said the attendance by the supporters for the team was “different”
“I’ve played in France for years
But today’s visit is way different than when I used to play here,” Ravai said
“There was a friend of mine in the crowd
It was also good to see the schoolchildren and supporters come around.”
and even the schoolchildren sang the Fiji national anthem while the players were training
Fiji” rang across the crowd as the players ended their training and went to greet the players
Lormont mayor Jean Touzeau thanked the Fiji players for choosing to hold their training session in their town
“It has been a privilege to have the Fiji team in Lormont at the start of the World Cup
We have a big respect for the Fijian players because they are very humble,” Touzeau said
staff and the players for choosing Lormont as a training base
“Good luck with the rest of their matches and I hope they reach the final
I hope the final will be between France and Fiji.”

Winemakers in Bordeaux have expressed their anger over the cost of Bordeaux wine being sold by retailer Carrefour
To put the cost in perspective, the average 1.25 litre bottle of a Coca-Cola or a typical soft drink is around €1.85 and flavoured water or large bottles of water are around €2 to €2.50
Gironde and Nouvelle-Aquitaine winemakers protested that their industry was being “ransacked” by the super-cheap booze
with some also highlighting that the bottles were less than a 1.5 litre of Sangria
The deal for the wine was part of the supermarket chain’s Foire aux Vins event
with stores selling six bottles of AOP Comte de Maignac for €9.96
Stores are also selling six bottles of Château Fontana for €11.82
individual bottles of Bordeaux are being sold for €2.49 and €2.95
Farming union FNSEA 33 wrote in a post on X that the distributors “are digging our grave” and even organised a protest outside a branch of Carrefour in Lormont
which was one of the participating stores in Gironde offering the deal
Wine producers replaced the bottles on shelves with uprooted vines to indicate the “disarray of the profession” as a result of the low prices
and even presented the Carrefour store manager with a joke ‘certificate’ for the ‘best lowest price’
The post read: “Presentation of the diploma for the 1st lowest prize to the director of Carrefour Lormont and to the manager of Johanes Boubée by the secretary general of the @FNSEA33 for the AOC
1.66 € per bottle of Bordeaux = no remuneration of the winegrower.”
— FNSEA de la Gironde (@FNSEA33) March 23, 2024
producers are calling for bottles to be sold at €3 each
Carrefour said the prices “do not affect the winemakers’ payments at all”
which buys and bottles the wine for Carrefour
was present at the Lormont store during the union’s visit
and said the cost situation was “clumsy” but the prices had been prepared months in advance and were fully financed by the firm
Julian highlighted the cheap deals were an attempt to arrest the dramatic fall in wine sales across France
and therefore ultimately was aimed at helping winegrowers to survive
But producers said this wasn’t the case
and a meeting with Maison Johanès Boubée has been set-up to discuss the bargain pricing issue
Last year, the French government announced a €160 million fund to help vignerons deal with oversupply of wine and has approved in principal the uprooting of vines
but concern has grown as wine sales have continued to slump in the Republic
The news follows winegrowers from Bordeaux joining the widespread demonstrations by farmers across France
blocking roads and disrupting traffic on the city’s busy motorway in February
which include dumping manure and lighting a bonfire in front of the headquarters for the regional government
were sparked by the French government’s plans to get rid of a tax break on agricultural diesel fuel
with farmers saying that they cannot afford to pay taxes on tractor fuel
The president of the Young Farmers of Gironde
who is a winegrower in St.-Sauveur de Médoc
added that certain costs were “no longer sustainable” and that winegrowers want their products “to be valued [and] to sell at the right price.”
National ministers have urged the EU to increase funding for the annual €60bn CAP subsidy scheme
which is around a third of the bloc’s entire budget
There is also concern amongst farmers about new environmental legislation and rules of pesticides
and cheap food imports impacting European farmers
The European Commission has also proposed measures to ease the administrative burden for accessing the CAP
and also allowing farmers to use set-aside for arable crops rather than as grassland
and even exempting smaller farmers from the fresh environmental rules altogether
Plans for cutting of pesticide use and emissions reduction goals have also be removed from the outline EU climate plans related to agriculture
had previously described to the Commission in a letter the environmental rules as a “regulatory tsunami” with “too many rushed consultations” and “top-down targets lacking assessment”

Nouvelle-Aquitaine) have protested and said their product is being “ransacked”
after finding bottles being sold for just €1.66 each at hypermarket chain Carrefour
Wine industry professionals have condemned the price as “unacceptable”, and specialist website Vitisphère has even said the price is less than that of alcohol-free wines
some Carrefour stores have been selling bundles of six bottles of AOP (appellation origine protégée) Comte de Maignac for €9.96
The chain is also selling bottles of Château Fontana at €11.82 for a bundle of six
Individual bottles of each are being sold for €2.49 and €2.95 each respectively
The brand has 60,000 of these bottles on sale at these prices, reports Sud-Ouest
"Always for less…these distributors are digging our grave,” wrote Gironde farming union FNSEA 33 on X (formerly Twitter)

the union organised a ‘stunt protest’ at Lormont
one of the participating Carrefour sites in Gironde
Producers replaced the bottles on shelves with uprooted vines
in a bid to symbolise the “disarray of the profession” and consequences of the low prices on the producers
Members also presented the shop manager with an ironic certificate
which read: “2024 diploma for the best lowest price.” Writing on X
they said that “Bottles of Bordeaux at €1.66 = non-payment to the winemaker.”
— FNSEA de la Gironde (@FNSEA33) March 23, 2024
The producers have said that these prices are “killing” their product
at a time when producers are already struggling against inflation and the trend towards lower wine consumption in France
They have called for bottles to be sold at at least €3 each
“Bordeaux does not deserve to be ransacked like this,” said Bastien Mercier
winemaker and vice president of the Viti33 campaigning committee
“We can’t reduce our prices to the level of lesser wines.”
He said that producers in the region had made “huge efforts” to improve their quality
and that “80% of our vineyard lands are of high environmental value…but these prices aren’t”
Mr Mercier also denied that consumers are “obsessed with price” when it comes to good wine
and that there was no need to sell good vintages at these low levels
“These prices devalue the [Bordeaux] brand,” added Stéphane Gabard
consumers believe that the quality isn’t there
from the point of view of costs of production
Carrefour said that the prices “do not affect the winemakers’ payments at all”
The head of Carrefour’s wine subsidiary merchant (which buys the wine wholesale and bottles it) Maison Johanès Boubée
was present at the unions’ visit to the Lormont supermarket
He admitted that the situation was “clumsy”
given the economic situation in the industry
He said that prices for this year’s Foire aux Vins had been prepared (along with the wine prices) many months ago
and was “fully financed by Maison Johanès Boubée”
The event “in no way affects the remuneration of the winegrowers”
It said that the funding of the event came out of its marketing budget
Mr Julian added that the event was also designed to “halt the fall in wine sales”
which would - overall - help winegrowers in the long-term
The group also said that “our average purchase price for the year is higher than the price demanded by the trade”
But unions and producers dispute these claims
Maison Johanès Boubée has said it has set up a meeting with producers to discuss prices this week
Mr Gabard said that Carrefour was not the only supermarket selling Bordeaux wine at bargain-basement prices
and added that Lidl has also had a Bordeaux variety on offer for €1.89 per bottle
Read more: Lidl’s €1.89 bottles of Bordeaux spark protests in south-west France
He said that if an agreement could not be reached in the sector
producers would need to take stronger action
"It's a race to the bottom between distributors,” he said

bègles: imagining a space of possibilities
‘this project demonstrates how absurd the economics of building architecture has become
begles was built at a cost of 1,000 € per m²
in full knowledge that the m² of the loggias are not factored in
this is much below the current price in this region
this means that the habitats go from the person who builds to the person who buys with as few steps in between as possible
which was implemented in function of the urban planning requirements

it’s based on the principle of variable compactness

we call this inter-seasonal architecture.’ – LAN architecture

urban renovation of the génicart district in lormont image © julien lanoo
lormont: what shall we do about ‘large ensembles?’
the génicart district is experiencing an urban renewal
the program of this ambitious urban and social renovation project is organized around four different residences
the treatment of the façade and the expansion of the interior space of the st
hilaire towers is the focal point of intervention
housing units are gradually distinguished from one another
‘the project took advantage of every opportunity provided by the need to intervene on the buildings in this neighborhood
the overall strategy was to render new housing blocks more visible by using a more individualized architectural treatment while retaining a more public
landscaped approach by fashioning new green spaces
this has totally transformed the neighborhood
from no man’s land to urban parks the buildings have been reconfigured as identifiable entities… this project tries to restore identity and especially a sense of pride
it was conducted while the site was occupied
the génicart neighborhood represents only 10% of the town of lormont’s surface area
and everyone had an opportunity in one way or another to participate in this process
the challenge at the outset was to gain their trust and then to mobilize their energies so that they would experience their neighborhood as a special
not as just another cité.’ – LAN architecture

Head coach Simon Raiwalui was joined by players Vilive Miramira
The team took the children from as young as four years old through some drills which emphasised the fun of playing rugby
Raiwalui said it was a good opportunity to give back to the community that was hosting them during the Rugby World Cup
“It’s really good to be involved with the community
We’re really grateful to the Club de Rugby Lormont for hosting us
There’s some good skills shown and it’s good for the future,” he said

“It’s always good to get back to the grassroots
getting the participation numbers up and we’ve got a really good drive in Fiji as well
get a bit of a walk around and just enjoy other people’s company
“We’re very grateful to the town of Lormont for providing all the facilities
It’s good to give back to the people who have provided for us
and giving back to the community is really good.”
Togiatama said coming out and giving something back to the children of France allowed the players to reconnect to what they normally did back home
these children are the future of French rugby and it’s a blessing to be here,” he said
“We really tried to emphasise the fun in rugby before the technical side of the game.”
The club’s under-10 coach Guillemot Ludovic said they were grateful to the Fiji team for sharing their knowledge with the children
“We are very glad to have Fiji here today
Part of the team is here and it is a really good time to have them here,” Ludovic said
This may be the only time that we have the Fiji team at our club and we are very grateful
We are very proud to be hosting the Fiji team
