“I hope that we put stars in the eyes of little girls and they will dream of competing in artistic swimming,” says Paris 2024 Olympian Romane Lunel
The 20-year-old was part of the history-making women’s team who matched their nation’s best-ever Olympic Team Event performance in the sport
The 2023 European Games champion, who also competed as part of the Olympic duet alongside team-mate Anastasia Bayandina
will compete in both disciplines at the season-opening World Aquatics Artistic Swimming World Cup in the French capital
The competition, which runs from 28 February to 2 March, will be the first major event for the best artistic swimmers on the planet since the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

“Paris 2024 was magical from start to finish,” Lunel tells World Aquatics
“Between the opening and closing ceremonies I only have good memories of the exceptional support from the public
“(Now) I’m really looking forward to competing again and it’s really cool to be able to do it again in front of our audience
They are always there (to support) and that gives us a lot of energy.”
With the Aquatics Centre in St. Denis undergoing planned post-Games redevelopment work, the athletes will return to the 1924 Olympic venue, Piscine Georges Vallerey, which was used as a training based during last summer’s Games.

While the Olympic Games shone a sporting spotlight on the French capital
two months after the Games concluded international attention turned back to Paris
but with a more traditional focus on fashion
For 2024’s edition of Paris Fashion Week though there was a very unique twist to French designer Christian Louboutin’s ‘Spring / Summer 2025’ show
which was presented at the iconic Piscine Molitor
which first opened in 1929 and possesses a historic art deco swimming pool
There, the French Olympic team returned to the water for one last time, with the help of Italian World champion Giorgio Minisini, and performed a series of dazzling routines – most notably while wearing striking ‘Miss Z’ stilettos.
The fashion show was created by film director and photographer David LaChapelle together with choreographer Blanca Li and was entitled ‘Paris is Louboutining’.
“It was cool to be able to show that our sport can be competitive sport but also a spectacle sport,” Lunel tells World Aquatics.
“We had about two weeks of rehearsals to prepare a 15-minute show and we were accomplished by Blanca Li and David LaChapelle, which went really well.
“It was an amazing experience to see how these events happen from the inside.

with the new regulations (in artistic swimming)
so it was really good to show our sport in another form,” said Lunel before answering the question most people were asking after witnessing the performance
while laughing about the team’s desire to retain the eye-catching footwear
Lunel feels Paris 2024 helped “shine a light” on her sport
which is traditionally “very little recognised in her homeland”
and believes the athletes helped “put stars in the eyes” of young fans who were watching either in the venue or on television last summer
Therefore, many who have decided to return are doing so with a new perspective and renewed motivation.
“The objective for the next few years will be to rebuild a new team and seek World medals,” reveals Lunel, who has won three European Championship honours with the national team.
“This (World medals) is what we are missing, and, in the end, going to win the medal in LA (Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028) that we didn’t get in Paris would be really incredible.
Lunel continues, “Singapore (2025 World Aquatics Championships) will therefore be very important, and we hope to win a medal there.”

Willin/FRMD6 is part of a family of proteins with a 4.1 ezrin-radixin-moesin (FERM) domain
It has been identified as an upstream activator of the Hippo pathway and
is associated with human diseases and disorders
Even though Willin/FRMD6 was originally discovered in the rat sciatic nerve
most studies have focused on its functional roles in cells outside of the nervous system
where Willin/FRMD6 is involved in the formation of apical junctional cell-cell complexes and in regulating cell migration
we investigate the biochemical and biophysical role of Willin/FRMD6 in neuronal cells
employing the commonly used SH-SY5Y neuronal model cell system and combining biochemical measurements with Elastic Resonator Interference Stress Micropscopy (ERISM)
We present the first direct evidence that Willin/FRMD6 expression influences both the cell mechanical phenotype and neuronal differentiation
By investigating cells with increased and decreased Willin/FRMD6 expression levels
we show that Willin/FRMD6 not only affects proliferation and migration capacity of cells but also leads to changes in cell morphology and an enhanced formation of neurite-like membrane extensions
These changes were accompanied by alterations of biophysical parameters such as cell force
the organization of actin stress fibers and the formation of focal adhesions
changes in Willin/FRMD6 expression inversely affected the activity of the extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK) pathway and downstream transcriptional factor NeuroD1
which seems to prime SH-SY5Y cells for retinoic acid (RA)-induced neuronal differentiation
to study the involvement of Willin/FRMD6 in biophysical aspects of SH-SY5Y cells
ERISM is a recently developed force mapping tool that allows for imaging of cell forces with high spatial resolution
Combining ERISM with biochemical measurements
we discovered that manipulating Willin/FRMD6 expression levels in SH-SY5Y cells influences both biochemical and biophysical effects
Reducing endogenous Willin/FRMD6 expression resulted in a change in proliferation rate and cell morphology
specifically an increase in fine membrane extensions
which in turn rendered the cells more susceptible to differentiation following RA stimulation
These cellular changes were accompanied by changes in the forces that the cells exerted onto their environment
changes in Willin/FRMD6 expression resulted in alterations of the actin cytoskeleton and the localization of TAZ; though notably these events were controlled by activation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK) pathway
These combined biochemical and physical measurements provide the first direct evidence that Willin/FRMD6 has potential roles in the development of neuronal-like cells and that these occur predominantly through the ERK signal transduction pathway
Antibiotic selection was maintained for 3 weeks of post-viral transduction
Lysates of cell monolayers were prepared using lysis buffer (50 mM Tris-HCl
0.1% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS); all reagents purchased from Sigma–Aldrich)
and lysate protein concentrations measured by BCA assay
Protein samples prepared with 20 μg of protein lysate and 5× loading buffer (500 mM dithiothreitol
0.25% bromophenol blue) were denatured by heating at 95°C for 5 min and separated by SDS-PAGE
Proteins were then transferred in a liquid buffer (25 mM Tris base
20% (v/v) methanol) onto a PVDF membrane (EMD Millipore) using a Bio-Rad blotting module at 25 V for 90–120 min
Membranes were stained with Ponceau S solution (Sigma–Aldrich) to verify effective protein transfer
Membranes were blocked in either 5% skimmed dried milk in TBS-T or 5% BSA in TBS-T for 1 h at room temperature
before being incubated with primary antibody diluted in blocking solution overnight at 4°C [FRMD6: Cell Signaling Technology
1:100; Phospho-p44/42 MAPK: Cell Signaling Technology
1:4,000; p44/42 MAPK (ERK1/2): Cell Signaling Technology
1:2,000; NeuroD1: Santa Cruz Biotechnology
1:500; β-actin: Sigma–Aldrich
Membranes were then washed three times with TBS-T for 10 min and incubated with horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-conjugated secondary antibody diluted in blocking solution for 1 h at room-temperature (Abcam
Membranes were washed with TBS-T for 15 min three times
and protein bands were detected by the addition of 0.75 ml Immobilon Western Chemiluminescent HRP Substrate for 1 min
Protein bands were visualized with the Fujifilm LAS-3000 imaging system and analyzed using FIJI
membranes were incubated with fluorescently labeled secondary antibodies (Li-Cor) and bands detected using the Li-Cor Odyssey CLx (Li-Cor)
Bands of the protein of interest were quantified using GAPDH or β-actin as a loading control
A serum-free SH-SY5Y cell suspension (5 × 105 cells) was added to cell culture inserts with 8.0 μm pores (BD Biosciences
Growth media supplemented with 20% serum was added to the lower chamber
The bottom side was stained with 0.3% crystal violet (Sigma–Aldrich)
The number of cells on the lower surface of each chamber was counted from images acquired using a Zeiss Axiovert 40CFL microscope
The area of cells was measured from phase-contrast images taken 24 h after seeding the cells on ERISM substrates
the outlines of the cells were drawn by hand using the FIJI software package and the area of the marked region was calculated
Cell elongation factors were calculated from the same images by measuring the longest (l) and shortest (s) diameter of a cell and calculating the elongation as (1 – s/l)
Cell membrane extension lengths were determined by hand using the FIJI software package. All cells possessing at least one extension with a length at least twice the cell body diameter were classified as a neurite-like extension-bearing cell (“pre-neurite”; Popovics et al., 2013)
Results were expressed as the percentage of fine extension bearing cells in the entire cell ensemble
cells were either fixed directly on ERISM substrates or coverslips
Fixation was achieved with 4% paraformaldehyde (Alfa Aesar) in PBS at room temperature for 20 min
Cells were washed twice with 0.05% Tween-20 in PBS (Alfa Aesar)
permeabilized with 0.1% Triton X-100 (Alfa Aesar) in PBS for 3 min
and blocked for 30 min with 1% BSA (Carl Roth) in PBS
Fixed cells on ERISM chips were simultaneously incubated with primary antibodies for vinculin (Merck Millipore
1:100) in blocking solution for 60 min at RT
incubated with the secondary antibodies (Sigma–Aldrich
1:400) and TRITC-conjugated phalloidin (Merck Millipore
1:500) in blocking solution for 45 min at RT
1:1,000 in blocking solution for 3 min at RT)
Fixed cells on coverslips were incubated with a primary antibody for neuroD1 (Santa Cruz Biotechnology
incubated with a secondary antibody (Jackson ImmunoResearch
1:1,000 in PBS for 30 min at RT) and washed again
Antifade Mountant with DAPI (Invitrogen; P36935) was used to visualize cell nuclei
SH-SY5Y cells were plated on the ERISM substrate or glass coverslip and incubated for 24 h
Cells then underwent two gentle washes of PBS to remove any excess serum leftover from the growth media before the addition of SH-SY5Y differentiation media [DMEM:F12
Fresh differentiation media was added to the cells every 2 days for a period of 7 or 8 days
Differentiated cells were defined as cells with neurites that were longer than 40 μm

Data points represent means measured for ni individual cells; shaded areas represent SEM (Day 1: nshScr = 16
To further investigate the effect of Willin/FRMD6 knockdown on exertion and transmission of cell force, shScr and shWillin cells were fixed on ERISM substrates and immunostained for the focal adhesion protein vinculin, the cytoskeleton protein actin and the mechanosensitive transcription co-activator TAZ (Figure 2A)
These data show that the knockdown of Willin/FRMD6 leads to general suppression of the mechanical activity of SH-SY5Y cells on various critical levels
as well as to morphological changes towards smaller but more elongated cells that form an increased number of small cell extensions
significantly increased in cells with higher Willin/FRMD6 expression
These findings suggest that the reduction of Willin/FRMD6 protein levels in SH-SY5Y cells leads to the activation of known signaling transduction pathways and promotes neuronal differentiation
This shows that knockdown of Willin/FRMD6 phenocopies the mechanical activity of RA-induced neuronal differentiation
the observed changes were attributed to the function of Willin/FRMD6 as an upstream activator of the Hippo signaling pathway
Willin/FRMD6 may have a similar role in focal adhesion complexes of SH-SY5Y cells
We also found that an increase of Willin/FRMD6 concentration
the changes in phenotype observed for knock-down cells were more pronounced than the reversed effect seen in overexpressing cells
our data show that Willin/FRMD6 knockdown not only promotes neuronal differentiation of SH-SY5Y cells but also results in increased proliferation
opens the door for future studies on how Willin/FRMD6 may not only influence neuronal differentiation but may also play a role in neurodegeneration

Emmanuel Macron’s business-friendly liberalism could be enough to spare France from the National Front
it’s no safe bet against the populist far right
French economic minister Emmanuel Macron got into a heated argument with protesters
Opposed to his government’s unpopular labor reforms
they’d just disrupted what was meant to be a stress-free photo op at a tech school in the sleepy Southern town of Lunel
As the minister smiled and shook hands inside
the sound of the megaphone blaring from across the street was impossible to ignore: “Mr
He had some more pointed advice for a younger protester
an unemployed twenty-one-year-old who quipped that he didn’t have the cash to pay for a nice suit like the one Macron was sporting
“You’re not gonna scare me with your T-shirt,” the minister retorted
“The best way to pay for a suit is to work for one.”
Since officially launching his presidential campaign last November
Macron has avoided slip-ups of this nature
a near-perfect distillation of his political vision: detached from the struggles of ordinary people
spiteful of unions and left-wing social movements
and enamored with the liberating power of free enterprise
While current polls show him handily defeating the odious Marine Le Pen of the far-right National Front (FN) in the second round of France’s presidential election—and there’s no question he’s a far preferable option in this case—the former investment banker-turned-minister is a dangerous politician in his own right
the success of the thirty-nine-year-old founder and leader of the independent En Marche
How can a candidate associated with such unpopular ideas—a backer of finance
For one, thanks to some top-notch branding and messaging. From the very beginning, Macron has posed as a renegade candidate, promising to take on “the system” and shake it up. “From the inside, I saw the emptiness of the system,” he thundered in his opening campaign speech last November
he claimed to be “the only outsider” in the race
However you choose to define “the system”—ultra-tight political cliques in charge of parties and governments
cultural elites with friends in high places
or brute economic powers fueling inequality—Macron embodies it
A native of Amiens in northern France, Macron attended the prestigious Henri IV prep school in Paris. From there, he moved on to Sciences Po, a highly selective university that specializes in politics and international relations, before graduating from the ultra-elite École Nationale d’Administration, an institution that literally produces France’s ruling class
Designed to groom high functionaries and ministers
the school counts as alumni three of the Fifth Republic’s seven presidents
including the current resident of the Élysée Palace
Macron joined the ranks of the Inspection générale des finances
an interdepartmental financial auditing corps
was named adjunct general reporter of the newly launched Commission for the Liberation of French Growth
Created by President Nicolas Sarkozy and chaired by Jacques Attali
once a top adviser to François Mitterrand’s Socialist government
the body was a French analog to the Simpsons-Bowles Commission: under the guise of nonpartisan economic reform
its recommendations boiled down to an assault on the social safety net
Its conclusions have inspired many a “reformist” since
from mainstream conservatives to Macron himself
It all but confirmed his personal political ambitions
In August Hollande’s former protégé resigned his post to focus on preparing his own presidential campaign
Macron’s record in government was unimpressive: the Socialists failed to tackle unemployment
even as they implemented reforms that doomed the party’s electoral chances
The fact that a graduate of one of the country’s grandes écoles who made millions in the Rothschild banking empire and set economic policy for the sitting government would even attempt to portray himself as “anti-system” says a lot about our current political moment
from a real-estate mogul successfully posing as an anti-establishment champion of the working class
Thanks to Hollande’s dismal presidency
working-class and other traditionally left-wing voters are turning their backs on the PS
The party’s presidential nominee Benoît Hamon has struggled to reverse the trend
Some of these electors now opt for independent left-wing candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon
But as recent European and regional races showed
many low-income voters prefer abstention and the National Front
the standard-bearer of the mainstream right Les Républicains
Aside from an especially cruel and unpopular platform
the former prime minister has been battered by a series of scandals over the alleged diversion of public funds
Party leaders and the conservative base alike grow increasingly critical
Those who do plan to cast ballots are turning away from the parties that have dominated French political life for a generation
Neither of the leading candidates belong to the two major parties
Le Pen has for years swelled the ranks of her far-right base with disillusioned working-class people
has managed to attract a more socioeconomically diverse swath of voters fed up with politics as usual
released in conjunction with his formal entry into the race
sheds some light on his no-labels identity
Macron describes himself as “progressive.” The word isn’t too familiar to French ears: Left-leaning voters think of something closer to its meaning in the American context
it sounds vaguely pro-business and pro-innovation
“Our political life is organized today around an old cleavage that no longer allows us to respond to the challenges of the world and our country,” Macron writes in Révolution
“Today the great questions of our time are our relationship to work
profoundly shaken up by environmental and technological questions
our relationship to the world and to Europe
the protection of individual liberties and of an open society in a world filled with risks
the left and right are profoundly divided and as such
They haven’t updated their ways of thinking to the reality that now surrounds us.”
to translate this sort of blueprint into actual policy prescription is to risk collapsing the entire project
No matter how one describes one’s guiding philosophy
campaign proposals interact in a real world that remains preoccupied with the question of how resources are distributed and who benefits from what; in short
Macron didn’t actually release his platform until early March—that is
less than eight weeks before the first round of the election
With the curtain finally lifted, the regressive nature of his candidacy can no longer be denied. One of the most worrying elements is a plan to further overhaul collective bargaining in favor of big business. Just 8 percent of French workers belong to unions, but by law, the contracts they negotiate cover nearly the entire labor force
from national and industry-wide agreements to deals with individual companies
Last year’s reforms undercut large-scale labor agreements by allowing company-level negotiations to take priority under certain circumstances
authorizing companies to bargain over issues currently codified by law
such as hours and the general organization of work
Since the terrorist attacks of November 2015
the law authorizes police to seize data from phones and computers and conduct searches without the approval of judges
In this year’s strange and unpredictable campaign
Macron’s mealy-mouthed liberalism could be enough to spare France from the National Front
it’s not exactly a safe bet against the mounting threat of the populist far right
European politics increasingly take the shape of a bleak contest
then at least in rhetoric: on the one hand
a strain of xenophobic populism anchored to the national welfare state; on the other
a sort of cosmopolitan liberalism in defense of free trade and enterprise
This is what the Brexit debate looked like
German and Dutch politicians increasingly talk along these lines
And it’s essentially what defines the conflict between Macron and Le Pen
Squeezed out of the discussion is the left: a force capable of defending public services while distinguishing between the free flow of people and capital
Macron’s plans to cut state spending and reshape collective bargaining will likely hurt wage-earners and fuel inequality
Le Pen’s “France First” program would be far worse
unleashing an unprecedented wave of racism and xenophobia
The first scenario is still much easier to imagine
Pro-EU liberals cannot continue to ignore the plight of working people and kowtow to business while assuming politics will go on as usual
events on the other side of the Atlantic should have been
And yet Macron’s bargain remains essentially unchanged
however “progressive” he considers it

Marine Le Pen’s National Rally is reaping the fruits of a long history of anti-European sentiment
As Emmanuel Macron bypasses French democracy to enact a sweeping pro-business agenda
French politics has become less predictable than at any time since the founding of the Fifth Republic
It remains to be seen whether this volatility will reward the left—or the populist far right

LANSING - Phil and Lunel Haysmer didn't know for sure until a few days ago that lava from Kilauea volcano had destroyed their home in Hawaii
From a room in a friend of a friend's house 15 miles from Hilo
watched video footage taken by a drone flying over their property.
Neighbors who had been back to their subdivision in the Leilani Estates told the Haysmers they were "pretty sure" the couple's 3,500-square-foot home was gone — but they hadn't been sure
Nineteen lava outbreaks in the neighborhood prevented them from getting a closer look.
But the drone's video gave the Haysmers a definitive and devastating look at the ruins of their home
Pieces of their home's corrugated metal roof
blackened with soot and warped by heat were strewn around the one-acre property
tropical plants and pineapple patch Lunel Haysmer planted when they bought the property six years ago were gone too.
More: Before and after: Satellite images show devastation of the Leilani Estates neighborhood from Hawaii volcano
but the heat that came with it started a fire that destroyed everything they owned
Michigan State University graduate and former Lansing Community College professor
The loss of their home has been an emotional blow
but they have no intention of leaving Hawaii
"The initial event basically happened in our back yard," he said Tuesday
who retired and moved to Hawaii six years ago, were evacuated from their neighborhood May 3
minutes before the first of 19 lava outbreaks happened less than a half mile from their house
It had been the second family emergency that day
had been taken by ambulance to a hospital after suffering a seizure
both artists who ran a gallery for more than two decades in California, had been listening to the sounds of pressure building underground the entire day
At times it sounded like they were "standing right right next to a jet engine," he said
When the evacuation order was issued Phil Haysmer said he was given 15 minutes to leave
the dogs (the couple has four) and their bowls," he said
Horrocks: 'There's simply nothing else like it'
Meridian Magnesium fire report to be done Thursday
Dan Carr remembered as 'compassionate' teacher
The Haysmers are among nearly 2,000 people who have been barred from their homes for nearly two weeks, while lava pours through the neighborhood. At least 36 structures, including 26 homes, have been destroyed, according to news reports
Phil Haysmer said they're getting by thanks to the generosity of strangers and friends alike who are housing them and helping them while they decide how to move forward
along with the couple's pick-up truck and everything in Phil Haysmer's lower-level art studio
waiting to see what insurance will cover," Phil Haysmer said
Insurance staff haven't been able to reach the couple's property yet
but they're grateful to everyone who's reached out to help them, Lunel Haysmer said
Friends in California started an online fundraising page to collect donations for the couple
and Phil Haysmer said some of those contributions have come from Michigan friends and family
owned Haysmer's Barber Shop in downtown Charlotte for nearly 50 years
"It's hard to be placed in a place where all you can do is receive," Lunel Haysmer said
"But it's an opportunity to look at things have a different point of view."
She's chronicling it on her blog at www.haysmerhawaii.blogspot.com
Phil Haysmer said Hawaii's "aloha spirit" is carrying them through the ordeal
'We will help you and someday you may need to help us,'" he said
It is a cultural community spirit of help that's an amazing thing to be a part of."
