Manchester United trailed 4-2 after 113 minutes of last Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon
That’s when hundreds of fans decided that they’d had enough and left Old Trafford for home, missing out on a late comeback as United won 5-4 (7-6 on aggregate) and progressed to the last four
The Athletic spoke to several supporters to find out why they left and how they feel about it now
“I sit in the South Stand and I’m being moved next season
Between that and the general rubbish we’ve endured this season and beyond
my head went when the referee gave Lyon a penalty
We heard (Kobbie) Mainoo’s goal on the radio as we passed The Quadrant pub in Stretford
By the time we hit the lights at Kings Road
but that I left when the team needed us most
I’ve left early before and missed the odd goal
It should’ve been a moment of joy — one of the great nights — and I missed it
“Me and my mate left just after the Lyon pen
we would have stuck it out if we’d have been without our kids
but we both had our kids with us — aged six
six and nine — and they were absolutely knackered,” explains Pete D
we were both absolutely seething with the collapse
I did feel a parental responsibility to get my kids home before midnight
Had we been winning I would have left at a similar time anyway
We were just outside the north stand when Bruno (Fernandes) scored
we were celebrating with hundreds of others
but I maintain that had we stayed that comeback wasn’t happening
I’m not sure I regret it as such as my kids were buzzing walking to the car with hundreds of United fans shouting and cheering
“Me and my mate Chris were gutted Friday morning
but the kids weren’t — they buzzed off the win and rewatching it Friday
I’ve been going to games all my life and it was the worst that I’ve ever seen us play
so I left the ground in disgust,” said Kenny from Manchester
“I’ve never done this before but I was sick of it all
I’ve applied for tickets for every away game this season and got two at Spurs and West Ham — we lost both
I left my seat in the main stand at Old Trafford
it’s a brilliant seat right in front of the press box
Then I got on the tram back into Manchester
“I was near Piccadilly Gardens when I heard that United had won
I didn’t believe it because I’d been at the game and United didn’t win
Somerset at 12:05pm and with the Bank Holiday traffic it took us just over seven hours before we parked up,” explains Ian Harris
“It was my fifth home game of the season (all defeats) and I normally like to buy my 12-year-old son a scarf on the 10-minute walk to the ground
but when we got to the ground the queues were much longer than normal
“We took our seat in the Stretford End just as the teams were coming out
United were cruising at half-time so the euphoria of celebrating those goals together and relief that we were going to celebrate a first home win for us this season was such a nice feeling
“Just after Garnacho had a one-on-one chance
but in the Stretford End we were singing: ‘What the f**king hell is that?’ and still having a great time
the Stretford End started singing: ‘You’ve seen United now f**k off home’
and it was only around the 70-minute mark and I thought that we’d gone a bit early on that one
Lyon scored and when they scored a second my son’s head was in his hands
I was so angry at the players for throwing away a two-goal lead
I had two choices: find the belief that this group of players would turn it around or dip out early to get to the car and possibly be home by 3am
“We went for a toilet break and started to leave
We ran down all those stairs to avoid the squash crossing the railway bridge and heard their fourth go in
“We got across the bridge — and plenty of others were leaving too — and heard half a cheer
I realise now that was for the penalty being given
Then we heard it was 3-4 from others leaving
‘5-4!’ I honestly thought they were joking
What followed was 40 minutes of silence in the car where we felt like we’d lost because we’d missed it
“It was the first time we’ve ever left early
but this season has tested my support to the limit and when I saw my lad’s head in his hands I was so pissed off that this group of players had fluffed their lines again I made a snap decision
“It’s a weird one really as I’d normally stay until the end for most games,” says Chris Harty
“For league games I have five tickets together with my brothers and kids
but for the cup games we just keep the three adult tickets active
So if the kids had been there we’d have more than likely stayed until the end for them
“I left the minute Luke Shaw clattered into (Malick) Fofana; I think it was in the box
I was frustrated with the fact we’d thrown away a two-goal lead against 10 men after a solid first-half performance
but really I should have expected that from this Man Utd side
The penalty went in near the go-karting track
My brother had the game on TNT on the walk back to the car after we heard it was 4-3
I was buzzing about the Kobbie and (Harry) Maguire goals
more so since we needed that win for Champions League football and the fact of going to Bilbao for a final
I didn’t believe one bit they’d get back into that game and I still don’t believe they thought they had a chance either.”

Two days after setting a school record for home runs in a game
Trigg County relied on its pitching and defense to defeat Lyon County 1-0 on Monday in Eddyville
Trigg’s Tember Oliver and Lyon’s Lilly Perry hooked up in a pitcher’s duel that saw the game’s only run cross the plate in the sixth inning
Veyda Grinols led off with a line drive single that was played into a two-base error
and Kady Fuller dropped in a bloop single just under the outstretched glove of center fielder Maddie Perry to score Grinols
Fuller finished 2-for-3 and raised her season batting average to .473
The sophomore is batting .650 (13-of-20) over her last six games
Lyon County’s best chance to score came in the fourth inning when Courtney Collins reached on an error and Jenna Coursey walked
Oliver induced three ground balls to the left side of the infield to escape the jam
She retired the final 12 batters and struck out six
How many hits she allowed depends on whose stat book you looked at
At issue is a second-inning hard grounder off the bat of Olivia Moore that Grinols tried to backhand and got past her into left field
Oliver improved to 16-3 and Trigg County won its program-best ninth straight game and stands at 17-6
It was Trigg’s second 1-0 win in four days
Perry had one of her best outings of the season for Lyon
scattering six hits and striking out seven while walking just two
Lyon County stands at 5-8 with a 1-4 district mark
their last three district games were a 5-2 win over Crittenden County
The Lady Lyons will host Christian County on Tuesday and play at Marshall County on Thursday
Trigg County has won five straight games against the Lady Lyons
but Lyon still leads the all-time fast pitch series 63-10

It appears a new grocer has its eyes set on the vacant Giant at the Lyon Village Shopping Center
A commercial addition permit application filed Monday on behalf of Sprouts Farmers Market calls for “tenant improvement of an existing grocery store into a new grocery store” at 3115 Langston Blvd
This is by far the largest retail bay in the shopping center. The Giant that had occupied the space for 60 years as the plaza’s anchor store closed last February
raising questions about the center’s future
Sprouts has three other Northern Virginia locations in Herndon
The nationwide supermarket chain places an emphasis on fresh produce and organic goods
Sprouts Farmers Market did not respond to a request for comment
The Lyon Village Shopping Center — which includes several other retailers, including CVS and The Italian Store — is still expected to see redevelopment at some point

Manchester United will host Olympique Lyonnais for the second leg of the UEFA Europa League quarter-final as the Red Devils gear up for their biggest game of the season at Old Trafford on Thursday
Andre Onana’s blunder allowed Lyon to take the lead
and goals from Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee turned the tide in favor of the visitors
but another error from Onana in the dying minutes of the first leg made the scoreline 2-2 ahead of the second leg in Manchester
and predictions for the thrilling second leg of the UEFA Europa League quarter-final between Manchester United and Lyon:
Here is when and where to watch the clash between Manchester United and Lyon
Where to watch: The match can be watched on Paramount+ in the USA
Ruben Amorim knows the importance of the fixture as Manchester United’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League depend on the outcome of the second leg at home
and the Portuguese coach would either get praised or get demolished in the English media on the basis of the result on Thursday
The Manchester United manager confirmed in the press conference on Wednesday that Onana would be starting the clash against Lyon at home while giving multiple updates about the rest of the players in his squad
After going through the league stage unbeaten
Manchester United swatted aside Real Sociedad in the Round of 16
defeating the Spanish club 5-2 on aggregate
the Red Devils suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of high-flying Newcastle United as Harvey Barnes shell-shocked Amorim’s makeshift defensive line in the second half after the first half ended 1-1 between the two sides
In the match against Newcastle United on Sunday
and the forward was sadly taken off the field while holding his hamstring
implying that it looks unlikely that he will feature again in the ongoing season
Jonny Evans has returned to team training at Carrington but will not be available for Thursday’s fixture
while Amad Diallo was also sighted training alone on the side and should be available for the semi-final if United makes it to the next round
Lyon went through the Round of 16 unscathed as they defeated FCSB 7-1 on aggregate and did enjoy a mildly successful league round as well
as they lost only one of their eight matches
Lyon is currently in the fourth position and hoping to climb up to the third spot to guarantee an automatic spot in the UEFA Champions League next season
with Marseille enduring a drop in form in Ligue 1
Lyon doesn’t have a lengthy injury line-up like United
but they do have a couple of concerns as Ernest Numuah is ruled out for the season
and Malick Fofana will also miss the Europa League clash on Thursday due to a knee injury
Predicted Starting XI: Perri; Maitland-Niles
The Playoffs aim to facilitate the safest bets for the game
Have a look at the predictions for the game below
Total goals Over 2.5 @ -157 (MGM Bet): The Manchester-based club has been good in terms of finding the net in the Europa League campaign this season
while Lyon always finds a way to score with multiple forwards in top form for Paulo Fonseca’s men
Alexandre Lacazette (To Score a Goal @ +240 as per MGM Bet): The former Arsenal striker only scored once against Manchester United in eight appearances across the Premier League and the FA Cup
and the French striker would be motivated to find the back of the net to correct course against the Red Devils.
The 33-year old has kept his poaching instincts alive this season as he has found the back of the net 15 times in 35 appearances across Ligue 1 and the Europa League while also providing a couple of assists to boost his goal contribution tally
The Red Devils have an excellent record in Europe against French clubs at home
Germain denting their near-perfect record since 1956
United have come out on top on both occasions
which could be a merry sign for Amorim’s men
Our Final Prediction: A 3-1 win for United would be a morale-booster and maybe just what the doctor ordered for the ailing club going through a tough season

All odds are courtesy of BetMGM & bet365
correct at the time of publishing and subject to change
it’s staggering to see the betting markets have given Lyon a 22.22% chance of winning the second leg
Lyon were two goals ahead and largely in control of the first leg
United’s league form must surely affect their morale going into this contest too
Players and fans know winning the Europa League is their only chance of playing in European competition again next season
That pressure weighed heavily on the United side for most of the first leg
and it’ll weigh heavier in front of their own fans
United have won only six of their 16 home league games this season
so Old Trafford is by no means the fortress it once was either
Backing Lyon to win in 90 minutes at these odds seems to be the clear value play from our trio of Manchester United vs Lyon predictions
Ruben Amorim’s United team have plenty of faults
but they don’t struggle to score in the Europa League
they haven’t failed to score in any of their Europa League games this campaign
Lyon have only failed to score in two of their 11 Europa League games
82% of United’s games in the competition have also seen both teams score
United even conceded goals against the likes of Viktoria Plzen and Glasgow Rangers
two sides that are surely inferior to Lyon
Looking at the data for Lyon and United’s 24/25 Europa League campaigns
64% of Lyon’s goals scored have arrived in the second half
65% of United’s goals scored have also come in the second period
Lyon have also conceded just three of their 11 goals in the Europa League during the first 45 minutes
All of this points to Fonseca’s men building their way into games before taking charge in the second half
the opening half at Old Trafford is sure to be cagey
there’s surely more than a 50% chance that we’ll see more goals in the second half than the first
Manchester United bravely fought back from two goals down to level their Europa League first leg with Lyon last week
It sets up an exciting second leg back at Old Trafford
where Ruben Amorim’s men have a chance at making the last four
United’s preparations for the second leg could hardly have gone any worse
They were soundly beaten 4-1 at Newcastle on Sunday
making a glaring error for the Magpies’ fourth goal
who was dropped after his error-strewn display in the first leg in Lyon
Amorim now has a big decision to make on his starting keeper for the second leg
United are without a win in three Premier League games and are still in with a chance of finishing fourth bottom
with 17th-placed West Ham only three points behind them
Second leg preparations for Paolo Fonseca’s Lyon could hardly have been more different
with L’OL winning 3-1 at Auxerre in their latest Ligue 1 game
The win moved them to within two points of second-placed AS Monaco
Lyon have lost just once in the Europa League this season and have won seven of their last nine Ligue 1 games
This form has put L’OL back into Champions League qualification contention for next season
even if they don’t win this year’s Europa League
Manchester United Expected Lineup: Onana; Mazraoui
Lyon Expected Lineup: Perri; Maitland-Niles
Arsenal reached the Women’s Champions League final for the first time since 2007 after overturning a first-leg deficit against Lyon with a 4-1 victory on Sunday
Arsenal had trailed 2-1 after last weekend’s defeat at the Emirates Stadium but recorded an emphatic win over the record eight-time European champions to progress 5-3 on aggregate and set up a meeting with Barcelona in May’s final
Renee Slegers’ side levelled the scores on aggregate after just five minutes at the Groupama Stadium as Lyon’s Damaris Egurrola’s attempted headed clearance from a corner deflected in off goalkeeper Christiane Endler
Arsenal doubled their advantage on the night and went ahead on aggregate in first-half stoppage time as Mariona Caldentey picked out the top corner with a bending effort from the edge of the penalty area
The visitors added a third one minute into the second half
Arsenal put the game beyond Lyon shortly after the hour-mark as Caitlin Foord capitalised on a slip from Vanessa Gilles and fired the ball into the roof of the net
Lyon pulled one back on 81 minutes though a low Melchie Dumornay effort
They will play defending champions Barcelona in the final on May 24 at Lisbon’s Jose Alvalade Stadium. Barcelona secured their final spot for a fifth successive season after Sunday’s 4-1 win at Chelsea secured an 8-2 aggregate victory
English sides have not traditionally enjoyed much success in the Women’s Champions League
with Arsenal becoming the first side since Chelsea in 2021 to reach the final
while the north London club’s success in 2007 remains the only time an English team has won the competition in its 24-year history
There was no single hero for Arsenal in a match that began with a Lyon own goal — a moment that foreshadowed an evening filled with poor defending by Lyon’s flat-footed backline
Arsenal repeatedly capitalised on Lyon’s defensive errors
the Londoners dominating while the home side failed to finish several chances in their attacking third
The first moment of brilliance for Arsenal came in first-half stoppage time through Caldentey and that momentum carried Arsenal into the second half
where they had a hot start just 31 seconds in thanks to Russo
the ball clumsily making its way through several of Lyon’s defenders
and it seemed they could have turned things around with a stronger showing in the second half
but that hope never materialised as they slipped further into disarray with each mistake
Arsenal were the better team and one worthy of a final bout against Barcelona
said Arsenal took confidence from their performance in the first leg against Lyon despite defeat at the Emirates — but didn’t quite expect to win the second leg in such emphatic fashion
I guess it didn’t faze us,” Foord told TNT Sports
“We knew what quality we had and we thought we played really well at home
to come here we just knew if we played our game we could do it
who have won the Champions League in three of the last four seasons
Foord added: “It’s going to be a tough game
We’ll obviously look forward to it and just can’t wait to take them on.”

The Lyon County Lady Lyons traveled to Ruff Park Thursday and came away with a win over the Hopkinsville Lady Tigers
The Lady Lyons ended up with a 4-2 win in the team match
Lyon County won three of the four singles matches
The Lady Lyons and the Lady Tigers then split the two doubles matches that were played
Lyon County officials have announced Circle Crest Road will be closed at the entrance of KY 93 South starting from 8:30 a.m
so please prepare for the road to be closed during this time
this will affect those who live on Eden Bay
two goals down in this tie and crashing out of the Europa League in calamitous fashion
thanks to goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot
“A capitulation… an embarrassment,” declared former United defender Rio Ferdinand on TNT Sports
And then the most unlikely collection of things happened to send United to a semi-final against Athletic Club on May 1 and May 8
Lyon had levelled the tie with two goals in six minutes — first Corentin Tolisso and then Nicolas Tagliafico
And while a red card for Tolisso — given a second yellow after clipping Leny Yoro — provided some hope
the brilliant Rayan Cherki struck in the first half of extra time and then Alexandre Lacazette scored from the penalty spot after a Luke Shaw foul
Bruno Fernandes pulled one back from the penalty spot
then came a cool strike from substitute Kobbie Mainoo and then up popped the forehead of Maguire
to keep United alive in this competition on one of the great European nights at Old Trafford
Charlotte Harpur and Anantaajith Raghuraman catch their breath and discuss the key talking points…
As United’s Premier League season went from bad to worse
it soon became apparent it was Bilbao or bust
It sums up United’s dreary campaign that so much rode on Thursday night’s result
it was a quarter-final second-leg Europa League tie against Lyon
especially compared to some of this week’s enticing Champions League games
But zoom in and the consequences are significant
particularly after such a remarkable game of football
This is something for United to cling to and a galvanising boost of much-needed confidence
United easily produced one of their best first-half performances this season before capitulating in the second half
surrendering pressure and missing the opportunity to go 3-0 up
Despite conceding four goals after half-time
there really was nothing left to save the season
Most importantly for the club is the financial aspect
United could expect to earn around £85.8million ($114m) as a minimum if they qualify for next season’s Champions League by winning this season’s Europa League
they still have many hoops to jump through
but Thursday’s win has taken them one crucial step closer to the final
This section was meant to be an item about Ruben Amorim’s reluctance to make substitutions during what was supposed to be the key period of the game
It was critical of Amorim for not changing things sooner
For waiting until the 86th minute to finally bring on Kobbie Mainoo and
who looked understandably lost in a position he had played once before in his senior career
And it lamented that United’s best plan when all is collapsing around them is to apparently stick Maguire up front

United did not have the players on the pitch to win in extra time
And then Mainoo whipped that strike in to equalise on aggregate
And then Maguire guided that header inside the post to win
the most incredible European occasion in Old Trafford’s history
You wondered whether Andre Onana had learned anything from the past week when
smiled and cockily nodded his head in the direction of Lyon’s supporters
But the most important lesson he could take on board from the first leg’s calamities was not to let his team-mates down again
although he might have hoped for a bit more help from them
Onana pulled off several excellent saves — first to deny Cherki
low and down to his right at a critical juncture in the first half
There was a carbon copy to deny Tolisso at the start of the second
and another from Ainsley Maitland-Niles that was not as easy as it looked
But with pressure building on United’s goal
he needed more assistance from those in front of him
His defenders failed to take responsibility for Tolisso
There was not much Onana could do about that
His positioning could be questioned for Lyon’s second
as Tagliafico’s shot crept across the line before he could make a reactive save
either Maguire or Yoro could have reacted quicker to stop the shot from coming
At least there were not the individual errors of the first leg for Onana
Manchester United and attacking fluidity have rarely been uttered in the same sentence this season
But the first half against Lyon saw them play some of their best attacking football under Ruben Amorim
taking a step forward from the home match against Real Sociedad last month
which Amorim said “showed a little bit of the future”
The first goal came from Fernandes passing to Dalot and jogging forward
turning back and then sprinting to the left wing
Dalot’s positioning had pulled left-back Tagliafico close to him and he passed back to Noussair Mazraoui
whose clipped first-time pass found Fernandes occupying the space Tagliafico had vacated
and his first touch took him past two Lyon defenders to the byline
Rasmus Hojlund wrestled with Moussa Niakhate
creating space in the box for Manuel Ugarte to run into and finish
The second goal was simpler in its creation
Maguire’s ball over the top was attacked by Dalot as Fernandes held his position
Tagliafico tracked back but was easily outmuscled by Dalot
Those were not the only occasions United troubled Lyon with such long passes into the channels
Dalot played a similar pass over Tagliafico to Fernandes
who hit the crossbar with a stretching volley
Casemiro played a first-time pass over the top — similar to the pass to Fernandes that led to Hojlund winning a penalty against Real Sociedad — to Ugarte
who made the run to the same right channel to win a corner
United combined clever off-the-ball movements with a simple passing strategy and excellent execution in the first half
I was watching the ’99 (Champions League win) commentary to have some inspiration for this moment
you could feel it during the game and then 4-2 with one more player
On his subs: “We tried to put Harry Maguire (up front) because he’s the only guy that can score a goal with his head
And then Kobbie Mainoo has a lack of pace in this moment because he had that injury and he stopped for a while
But he’s really good in small spaces and then he has the ability to score that kind of goal.”
On players returning from injury: “It’s really important because
you can feel that playing Premier League and European games is really hard
Luke Shaw was meant to play 30 minutes tops
but we had a problem with Nouss(air Mazraoui) at half-time
So all this stuff happened during this game but
On the performance: “We started well but we are not really consistent in maintaining the game in the same way for a long time
“We should do better with Lyon’s two goals but that’s it
We have a lot to improve but the character was there.”
On frustration over his team’s inconsistency: “Of course
because the reflection of the coach is in the league
but your reflection as a team is the league and we are underperforming
You can see that we lack a lot of characteristics in our team
You want to push forward and you seek Garna(cho)
but you feel he’s the only one who can make the transitions
On the belief this win will provide: “Sometimes we just look at the tactical or physical aspect
but this kind of moment can change a lot in the players’ minds
We have to be really focused on the Europa League
we have to take a risk sometimes with the kids in the Premier League
and we have to be tough on that and the fans have to understand that we want to focus on the Europa League.”

After playing late into the night in a 12-inning win over University Heights in the All A regional title game Monday night
you could understand the Lyon County Lyons opening a little bit off stride as they hosted Livingston Central Tuesday night in a 5th District contest
the Lyons scored 15 unanswered runs over the next two innings to take an 18-3 three-inning win over the Cardinals
The Lyons scored four runs in the second and then walked off the win by scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the third
John Bingham ended the night 3-4 with an RBI and three runs scored
The Lyons had some issues in the field in the game
Harry Maguire guided the ball home into the opposite corner of the net and sent Old Trafford potty
putting the exclamation mark on the kind of come-from-behind triumph that Manchester United fans will surely never tire of reliving
you might well know every twist and turn in the story of United’s 5-4 victory over Lyon in the Europa League last Thursday
a result that keeps their season — and their chances of securing Champions League qualification by winning Europe’s second-tier competition outright — alive
But where does the Lyon win rank among United’s greatest European comebacks
From ‘that night in Barcelona’ to the victory that put them on the way to winning the European Cup for the very first time
Andy Mitten rates the most memorable European resurgences in the club’s history
It can’t be topped
Manchester United were losing 1-0 in the 90th minute of the biggest game in club football
Legendary player George Best had left his seat
Teddy Sheringham (90+1) and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (90+3) meant United became the first English team to win the Premier League
had “repeatedly ripped us apart in the first half”
yet conceded a 92nd-minute Ryan Giggs equaliser to give United an unlikely 1-1 draw
So there were no surprises when Juventus went 1-0 up after six minutes through Filippo Inzaghi in Turin
Zinedine Zidane put a low cross into the back post area
“I was disappointed and angry,” recalled Sir Alex Ferguson
“Inzaghi was more alert and decisive than our defenders
We should be above surrendering goals like that.”
again through Inzaghi after he slid ahead of Jaap Stam
Juventus seemed to be powering towards a meeting with Bayern Munich in Barcelona and a fourth successive European Cup final
having beaten Ajax in 1996 and lost to Dortmund in 1997 and Real Madrid in 1998
Step forward Roy Keane, glancing a David Beckham corner past Angelo Peruzzi on 24 minutes. He and Nicky Butt then began to best Juve’s stellar midfield of Zinedine Zidane
Andy Cole assisted the second after 35 minutes
this time for Dwight Yorke to make it 2-2 on the night
Keane was harshly booked for a late tackle on Zidane that meant he would miss the final should United qualify
who played him the ball before the challenge
Blomqvist rightly maintained that it wasn’t even a bad pass
but United had the advantage on away goals and the momentum
The comeback was under way and Keane’s performance garnered high praise from his manager as “the most emphatic display of selflessness I have seen on a field
competing as if he would rather die of exhaustion than lose
I felt it was an honour to be associated with such a player”
Cole remembers Ferguson’s calmness at half-time
“It was like he was reading it from a book and really inspiring,” says the former United striker
“He said: ‘Get another goal and we’ll win this game’
It could have been more than 3-2 because we pulverised them.”
And it was Cole who made it 3-2 with five minutes left
taking United to a first European Cup final since 1968
United lost the first leg of this European Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-final 2-0 in the Camp Nou and the Catalans
Bryan Robson recalled, when speaking to The Athletic
that United had had their chances in Barcelona but
took it as a positive that they hadn’t bagged an away goal because possibly “we wouldn’t have gone for it like we did at Old Trafford”
They kept us motivated and the adrenaline going
It was the biggest crowd of the season: 58,000
But what about the fans who climbed the floodlight pylons to see?”
Robson gave United the best start possible
United’s captain pounced to score another before Frank Stapleton found himself in the right place at the right time to make it 3-2
there was still a long time left and we’d put so much energy into the game that we had to be careful not to concede,” said Robson.”We tired and they started to get their passing going
They missed a couple of chances late on which
“Maradona claimed they should have won a penalty but it was never a penalty
I don’t think Old Trafford will ever beat the atmosphere of that night
unless the stadium goes back to terracing like it was then.”
“That game in Manchester,” said the Argentinian icon
he was my favourite English player of that generation
On March 6, 2019, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to get his phone out and film his players for the one and only time in his career
Inside the away dressing rooms in the Parc des Princes
his players were singing “Ole’s at the wheel” to the tune of the Stone Roses’ ‘Waterfall’: “Tell me how good does it feel
Marcus Rashford is Manc born and bred.” Eric Bailly was the most enthusiastic dancer
standing on the massage table giving it some and kicking pizza boxes
Club legends Eric Cantona and Sir Alex Ferguson came down from the stands
United had just come back from a 2-0 defeat to PSG at Old Trafford to defeat Thomas Tuchel’s side 3-1 away with a 94th-minute penalty in front of 3,000 away fans in the Parisian rain
The end of that game arguably remains the most exhilarating moment of the post-Ferguson years
and not even Thursday’s heroics have changed that
It didn’t lead to a trophy — Solskjaer’s failure to win one in nearly three years of management was a major reason he didn’t keep his job — but that young
injury-hit United performance in pink won’t be forgotten
Solskjaer felt that overconfidence bordering on arrogance might be PSG’s Achilles’ heel
“Mountains are there to be climbed,” he told his players and reminded the media: “Manchester United have always thrived in adversity; never been a club that has given up.”
Solskjaer drove his players hard in training and focused on a couple of opponents
players whom he thought would make mistakes under pressure
but saw opportunity in that and told his players to enjoy the Champions League music
and try to make sure it wasn’t the last time they heard it that season — a very Fergie-like comment
Romelu Lukaku scored twice inside first 30 minutes and United led 2-1
Solskjaer told his players to hang in there
that they’d already surprised them by scoring two
“If we get to the last 10 minutes needing only a goal
then it’s squeaky bum time for them,” said the Norwegian
Solskjaer ran across the pitch to celebrate with the players and the fans in the rain
Then they went back to the dressing room and he got his phone out
United travelled to the Bernabeu holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg in the 1968 European Cup semi-final
About 125,000 people filled Real Madrid’s stadium
twice as many as a full Old Trafford could hold
There were 2,000 United fans and it was probably the club’s first significant following for a European away game
Manager Matt Busby had stressed that the first 20 minutes were important and United held out for 32 minutes
superb,” recalled midfielder Paddy Crerand
“They played the ball around so quickly that we couldn’t get close to them.”
Madrid led 3-1 at the break and United’s players walked off the pitch bewildered
“we’ve been playing a defensive game… and we don’t play it very well
So let’s go out and attack and we should be alright
“If he was desperate — and I think he must have been — then he hid it,” said Crerand. “Matt probably thought that he would never lift the European Cup. He knew that his side were getting older, as he was, and he also knew this was his last chance. He desperately wanted to lift that trophy for the boys who had died in Munich
but he succeeded in spreading belief and calm.”
Defender David Sadler was told to push up as United switched to 4-3-3
Sadler knocked a ball in from a free kick and United were level on aggregate
I took a long throw for George (Best) down the line
George beat both (Manolo) Sanchis and Zoco
They watched bewildered as he ran towards the byline and pulled the ball back for Bill Foulkes
Our centre-half was playing like a centre-forward
“My first reaction was: ‘What’s that idiot doing there?’ but Bill knew best this time
Sixteen years a United player and a Munich survivor
he struck the ball brilliantly into the goal.”
and Busby’s side went on to win the club’s first ever European Cup
A comeback fit to be on this list; it was that good
Lyon’s first two levelled the tie at 4-4 and sent the game into extra time
Their second two after 104 and 109 minutes saw their players ecstatic
in the words of Harry Maguire: “I think they thought they’d won it
That gave us more of an incentive to turn the game around.”
A Bruno Fernandes penalty after 114 minutes made it 3-4
“It was an incredible feeling to score that winner in such an important game
in a game that was full of emotion and the strangest
maddest game I’ve ever played in or witnessed,” said Maguire
Another game in which United had lost the first leg
had a picture of the scoreboard on his desk hoping it would be the lowest point in the post-Ferguson United era
but a high would follow as Robin van Persie hit a hat-trick at Old Trafford to send David Moyes’ side into a quarter-final tie against Bayern Munich
Shocked at trailing 2-0 at half-time at home in an important group-stage game
Cristiano Ronaldo inspired United to a 3-2 comeback with goals from Marcus Rashford
Harry Maguire and then an 81st minute-winner from the Portuguese star in one of the high points of his second spell at the club
with Scholes sent off and travelling fans attacked inside and outside the Stadio Olimpico
The second leg swung the other way — and then some — as United scored seven at Old Trafford
Alan Smith and Patrice Evra all netted in the biggest home European win since the 1950s
Make it two in a row for the Lyon County Lady Lyons
Lyon County scored five unanswered runs to come back from an early 2-0 deficit and take a 5-2 win over the Crittenden County Lady Rockets in a big 5th District matchup at Lee S
Andrea Federico drove in a pair of runs with a double in the top of the first to spot the Lady Rockets out to a 2-0 lead
Olivia Moore hit her second home run of the season to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth
The Lady Lyons then took the lead in the fifth when Courtney Collins reached base on a Crittenden County error that allowed Audrey Akridge to score
Jenna Coursey followed that with an RBI single and the Lyon County lead was at 4-2
The Lady Lyons added an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th on an RBI single from Ava Prow
Audrey Akridge finished the night 2-3 with a run scored
Lilly Perry went the distance in the circle to pick up the win
Lyon County improves to 5-6 with the win while Crittenden County drops to 5-5

prior to Thursday’s 3:00pm EDT Europa League clash (04/10)
The bookmakers’ odds show a near-equal contest between the two sides
you’d expect there to be a bigger gulf in price
Lyon’s price seems rather generous given their solid form
They’ve won six of their last seven games in all competitions
Man Utd’s last six wins came over the course of 14 games
including a commanding 4-0 win over FCSB in the Europa League last 16
They’ve lost just one of their 13 home games dating back to late October
The only team to beat them in that time was PSG
Man Utd are a notable step down in quality from PSG
United have struggled on the road of late too
They’ve won only one of their last five away games
Even that was against Championship-bound Leicester
Lyon have certainly not been shy in front of goal in the Europa League this season
they’ve only exceeded this tally in two previous major European campaigns – 29 in 2004/05 and 28 in 2016/17
They netted seven across their last-16 tie with FCSB
They’ve been prolific in all competitions of late
netting 2+ goals in their last 11 games in all competitions
seven of their 10 games in the Europa League this season have seen them net over 1.5 goals
United may have to field a makeshift back line once again
Harry Maguire walked off in the 60th minute
Lyon appear well-positioned to exploit any mistakes in a makeshift United defence
Neither side will be particularly keen to push forward
as nothing will be decided in the first 45 minutes of the first leg
both sides could adopt a cautious strategy early on and gradually ease into the match
who have seen six of their last nine games stand level at half-time
Manchester United’s last seven games in the Europa League have all been level after 45 minutes
Two of the last three competitive meetings between these two also stood level at the break
It’s a quick transition from domestic action to the Europa League quarter-finals for Lyon and Man Utd
Lyon are still in the hunt for a top-four finish in Ligue 1
are staring down the barrel of a bottom-half finish in the Premier League
Lyon come into this clash on the back of a huge victory against Lille at the weekend
That win massively boosted their European aspirations
That includes a thumping 7-1 aggregate win over FCSB in the Europa League last 16
Things aren’t nearly as positive for Man Utd
Their Premier League season has been simply tragic
and their only realistic route into European competition next season is by winning this competition
They remain unbeaten in this competition so far this season
will host the 2016-17 UEFA Europa League Champions
at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Lyon on Thursday
for the first leg of the two-legged quarter-final in the 2024-25 Europa League
The two clubs have met in European competitions on four occasions
with United unbeaten till now with a record of 2 wins and 2 draws against the French club
and predictions for the thrilling first leg of the UEFA Europa League quarter-final clash between Lyon and Manchester United:
Here is when and where to watch the clash between Lyon and Manchester United
Where to watch: The match can be watched on Paramount+ and CBS Sports Network in the USA
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim seems to have sorted out the issues with the formation and playing style as of late
but the Portuguese manager feels that it will be a different kind of battle on Thursday
“It’s going to be different against Lyon
because they play in a league that is so physical
We have to find different ways of winning those games and we’ll be ready for that.”
Lyon started the 2024-25 Europa League season on a positive note with two consecutive wins
but a defeat and three draws in their subsequent six matches left them in the sixth position on the league standings
The French club was totally ruthless when they met FCSB in the Round of 16 and thrashed them 7-1 on aggregate
setting up a quarter-final against Amorim’s men
Lyon is currently involved in an intense battle for the Champions League spots as only six points separate Marsielle in 2nd position and LOSC Lille in 7th position with only six matchdays left in the Ligue 1 season
leaving OL to divert their attention on both fronts over the coming weeks
Malick Fofana and Ernest Numuah will not feature in the home leg against Manchester United due to their respective injuries while A
The Red Devils were the only team to remain unbeaten throughout the league stage of the ongoing Europa League campaign
drawing their first three matches and then going on a five-match winning streak to finish third in the league standings
United then brushed aside the challenge from Real Sociedad as they beat the Spaniards 5-2 on aggregate in the Round of 16
Amorim’s men are currently 13th in the league standings and won’t gain anything from fighting it out on the domestic front except for salvation as they would be looking to avoid a first bottom-half finish in Premier League history for the celebrated club
Luke Shaw might feature for a few minutes after making it to the bench in the Manchester Derby
Total goals Over 2.5 @ -121 (MGM Bet): Lyon has one of the best offensive records with Alexandre Lacazette
and Ryan Cherki banging in the goals for the French club
but United’s newly found defensive resilience might prove to be a factor on Thursday
Bruno Fernandes (To Score a Goal @ +225 as per MGM Bet): The leading goalscorer for Manchester United in the 2024-25 season
Bruno Fernandes has 7 goal contributions in 9 matches in Europe’s second-tier competition this season and Amorim would be hoping that his skipper can deliver the goods to help them secure a trophy at the end of the season
Many fans and pundits would be backing Lyon
owing to their strong form in both league and Europe
but one can never discount the might of the Red Devils
who could still destroy oppositions on a good day
Our Final Prediction: A 2-1 win for Lyon would set up the tie perfectly ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford and given the fact that Lyon has never lost to United at home certainly boost their chances for Thursday

Six changes for Arsenal against Brighton Women as big guns return
Brighton & Hove Albion Women v Arsenal Preview
Arsenal U21s and U18s miss out on league title
Arsenal will play Barcelona in the Champions League final after beating Lyon 4-1 in the second leg
Renée Slegers made two changes to last weekend’s team
and Daphne van Domselaar returning to goal in place of Manu Zinsberger
after a faster than expected recovery from an ankle injury
There was also a place for Lotte Wubben-Moy on the bench
who held the ball up on the edge of the box for Little
whose left footed shot was parried by Endler for a corner
From the corner, Arsenal leveled the tie on 5 minutes. Kelly’s corner was missed by Endler, and was headed by Egurrola, under pressure from Maanum, onto Endler’s back and it trickled over the line. 0-1
went beyond her international teammate before shooting straight at Endler
McCabe did well to stick tight to Diani and block a cross out for a corner
and crossed into the penalty box for an unmarkedRusso
Neat play from Arsenal saw the Gunners build from the back and across from the right before Foord slipped in McCabe
landing on the top of the net with Van Domselaar frozen
having been second best for most of the first half were upping the intensity
with Dumornay and Diani having shots blocked
Mariona Caldentey gave Arsenal the lead on aggregate in the first minute of first half stoppage time. The move had looked like it fizzled out with too many Arsenal players central. Mariona, though, took a pass on, and from the edge of the penalty box fired a shot into the top corner. 0-2
Bacha was slipped in behind Fox and crossed for an unmarked Egurrola
Alessia Russo extended Arsenal’s lead in the first minute of the second half. A mix up from Lyon defensively led to Foord, slipping, to play to Maanum. A richochet came to Russo, who, from the inside left, shot, with Endler only able to get a touch. 0-3
with the shot wide of Van Domselaar’s post
McCabe made a vital block on the hour mark
Bacha’s corner was floated to the back post
but McCabe blocked it on the line and Arsenal cleared
On 63 minutes, Caitlin Foord made it 4-0 on the night after another massive Lyon error. Endler played short to Gilles on a goal kick. Gilles slipped, Foord ran on to it, and fired into the roof of the net. 0-4
Egurrola somehow escaped a second yellow after bringing Russo down
Stina Blackstenius and Beth Mead replaced Russo and Kelly
there was plenty of space for Arsenal to exploit
Lyon pulled a goal back on 81 minutes. Carpenter’s cross was headed by Little down, but it came straight to Dumornay, who fired past Van Domselaar. 1-4
Van Domselaar came and didn’t reach the ball
Kyra Cooney-Cross and Lotte Wubben-Moy replaced Mariona and Frida Maanum
Little won the ball on the edge of the Lyon box
but Arsenal couldn’t work an angle to shoot
Carpenter played in another dangerous cross
and first Le Sommer and then Majiri tried to get on it
and Le Sommer attempted a bicycle kick that went well over
and then the referee finally blew for full time
and Arsenal were through to the Champions League final

Renee can be super proud of herself and what she’s done since taking over
Incredibly delighted for every one of these players
What a way to roll back the years in that midfield today
I was listening to an interview she made before the tie even began
she mentioned how she has been to a couple of UWCL semis with this club but never the final
And how much it would mean to her to lead this club to the final
Seeing how emotional she was at the… Read more »
Let’s hope for 2 CL finals versus Barcelona
Strange how the men are allways dragged into the women performance
It is unthinkable any one would say in the men matchreport: lets hope the women will also reach the finales
Our own Remontada!😀😂….what can I say
The future looks bright for AFC at all levels!
“The future looks bright for AFC at all levels!!”
What a time to be associated with this club
You have to wonder if these are the same players who were so underwhelming at the start of the season
It shows just how good a job Renee Slegers has done
I’d be honest and say I didn’t expect her to be performing the way she has done
To go from losing 5 – 2 to Bayern to beating LYON 1 – 4 at home enroute to the final is truly superb work
The way Katie and Foxy handled the Lyon wingers today compared to all the space we gave them in the first leg shows they learned from the first leg
Think she is going to be thorn in Bompastor’s flesh next season
At the 5-2 loss it was not Slefers at the helm
Just because things didn’t work out doesn’t mean he is useless
Emery wasn’t what Arsenal needed when he came here
that doesn’t mean he’s a bad manager
doing alright at Villa and won a bunch of trophies before he came to Arsenal
Surely you can acknowledge how well Slegers has done without putting down Eidevall
but he had a great personality and gave us some memorable results himself
Remember how dreary it was to face City and Chelsea towards the end of Joe’s tenure
Don’t understand the insults fans level at him (same as the Emery situation.)
I didn’t have much faith in the ladies turning it around in Lyon
Now I’m a believer that we both can win the UCL this season
I refrained from mentioning that because I don’t want to jinx it
dare we dream for a men and women’s champions league double
Now let’s make it a Champions League Final double!!
I would take Inter on the men side for a change
Wouldn’t mind adding a couple more players of her ilk to the team this summer
the same pundits will turn around to discuss how the OL team haven’t really been great all season
Yep you can guarantee it.The general rule of thumb is.If Arsenal win the opposition are crap.If Arsenal lose. The opposition are the greatest team in the universe

A real team effort with standouts from Kim Little
And now Barca which will be a real challenge
I saw their first match with Chelsea and part of today’s and I don’t think I have seen so many fouls in a single match go unpunished. However
I do believe that we have a real chance of beating them and am looking forward to the match
Full credit must also go to Renee and her staff who have re-ignited the team and made our player play their best with freedom
you’re crying 🤩 fantastic day all eound
Just one question: why wasn’t Beth’s handball given as a penalty
but perhaps the VAR found a preceding foul or off side
The game was between the creator (Joe) and the creature (Renée Slegers) how it ended was unbelievable
Joe created a strategist who has not yet shown her potential
Next she became assist to Eidevall at Arsenal
Joe mentored Renee when she was doing her UEFA Pro License training
I think this was mentioned in the match commentary on DAZN
it all started in 2022. https://www.uefa.com/news-media/news/0272-146b0dad1683-496eb8af271d-1000–the-countless-benefits-of-the-uefa-coach-mentor-programme/
She already won two titels and a cup in Sweden after eidevall left
Anyone secretly planning a two centre Lisbon / Munich holiday yet
They absolutely bossed it everywhere on the pitch today
The article’s comment on Maanum not getting some passes right was a bit harsh
She and the rest of the team ran their socks off all game
Their tiredness showed a little toward the end
What a fucking performance from Renee and the entire team
I’m thoroughly going to enjoy the final whatever happens
Also major shoutout to the travelling fans
so happy ❤️ Especially for Kimmie who is still beloved in Seattle (where I live) from her time with the Reign
I don’t understand what you are saying
I’d like to give a mention to Steph Catley: I’ve been a bit worried about her but she was faultless
And Mariona’s goal was so sublime that we can overlook Lessi’s – so cool
and much more difficult than she made it look
Man Utd stun Lyon in nine-goal Europa League classic to reach semisManchester United came from 4-2 down in extra-time to beat Lyon 5-4 in a remarkable Europa League quarter-final to progress 7-6 on aggregate on Thursday.Man United's season looked over when Lyon came from 2-0 down to lead by two goals with just six minutes remaining at Old Trafford despite having captain Corentin Tolisso sent-off
Kobbie Mainoo's strike and Harry Maguire's header capped a stunning finale to set up a semi-final meeting with Athletic Bilbao
The Red Devils sit 14th in the English top flight and defeat would have almost certainly meant missing out on European football entirely next season
Instead they are just three games away from a European trophy and the lifeline of direct access to the riches of the Champions League next season
First-half goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot had put United in a commanding position
But the defensive deficiencies and mental fragility of Ruben Amorim's side were exposed in a collapse that threatened to cap a miserable campaign
Two goals in seven minutes from Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico brought Lyon level
Tolisso was then sent-off for two yellow cards in the 89th minute
The 10 men still looked set to prevail in the extra 30 minutes thanks to a brilliant strike from Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette's penalty
United's history is build on dramatic late fightbacks but few have been more remarkable than this to leave Lyon shellshocked
The home side got off to a flying start thanks to a fine team goal as Fernandes released Alejandro Garnacho down the right and his cross picked out Ugarte to slot in just his second goal since joining the English giants form Paris Saint-Germain
Amorim's decision to restore Andre Onana in goal was under scrutiny
The Cameroonian had been dropped for Sunday's 4-1 thrashing at Newcastle after two costly errors that led to both Lyon's goals in last week's 2-2 first leg draw
Those mistakes came after a war of words with former United midfielder Nemanja Matic
who labelled him "one of the worst goalkeepers in United's history."
The 29-year-old rewarded his manager's faith with a couple of important stops to prevent Lyon levelling through Paul Akouokou and Cherki
a United side that have often looked laboured and lacking in ideas all season
suddenly clicked into gear in the first 45 minutes
United doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time when Maguire's long ball was expertly controlled by Dalot
who then fired in off the inside of the post
Garnacho should have killed the tie off within minutes of the restart for the second half when he shot straight at Lucas Perri with Fernandes begging for a pass for a tap in
That was to prove a turning point as United crumbled in stunning fashion
Lyon boss Paulo Fonseca was able to prowl the touchline unlike in Ligue 1 where he is serving a nine-month touchline ban
The Portuguese introduced captain Lacazette off the bench in a bid to turn the tide
And the former Arsenal striker played a central role in the fightback
Lacazette flicked on Moussa Niakhate's header and Tolisso swooped to head in and give the visitors a lifeline
Tagliafico then prodded in at the back post despite Onana's attempt to scoop it off the line
Just as Lyon were in the ascendency Tolisso gave them a mountain to climb again with a soft second yellow for a trip on Casemiro
it did not initially matter as Cherki confirmed his status as one of Europe's rising stars with a powerful drive that left Onana motionless
Lyon's other prized asset Malick Fofana was then chopped down by Luke Shaw inside the area and Lacazette confidently dispatched the resulting spot-kick
kickstarted the fightback as Fernandes fired home
Substitute Mainoo showed why he had been thrust in an unfamiliar forward role with a composed finish to level on 120 minutes
Barely 60 seconds later Maguire completed the comeback with a towering header at the back post
Lyon 1-4 Arsenal (3-5 agg): Slegers' side seal WCL final spot after inspired turnaroundArsenal advanced to their first Women's Champions League final in 18 years after a wonderful turnaround against eight-time winners Lyon.Arsenal produced an inspired turnaround to defeat Lyon 5-3 on aggregate and book their place in the Women's Champions League final.
Renee Slegers' side trailed 2-1 following last week's first leg
but ran out commanding 4-1 winners at the Groupama Stadium on Sunday to set up a showdown with reigning champions Barcelona in next month's showpiece
Arsenal had overturned deficits to overcome Hacken and Real Madrid in the previous rounds
and took just five minutes to level the tie
as Chloe Kelly's corner ricocheted off Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler and into her own net
There was nothing fortuitous about the Gunners' second goal in first-half stoppage time
though, with Alessia Russo teeing up Mariona Caldentey to whip a superb strike into the top corner
Russo then got in on the act within 27 seconds of the restart
capitalising on sloppy defending before firing home
Another defensive error allowed Arsenal to score a fourth in the 63rd minute
Caitlin Foord pouncing on a Vanessa Gilles slip before finishing
Melchie Dumornay pulled one back for the hosts 10 minutes from time
but it was a mere consolation as the visitors held out to seal their first Champions League final appearance in 18 years.
Data Debrief: Arsenal flip the form book in emphatic fashion
Arsenal had lost six of their seven Champions League semi-final ties
but enjoyed a timely upturn in fortunes in superb fashion
The Gunners inflicted Lyon's first competitive defeat on home soil after 90 minutes since they lost 1-0 to Chelsea in the 2022-23 Champions League semi-final first leg
The eight-time champions also saw their streak of 11 successive semi-final aggregate victories in this competition brought to a shuddering halt
Man Utd held late in Lyon after Onana errors in Europa LeagueManchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana endured a night to forget as two costly mistakes allowed Lyon to snatch a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday. The Cameroon international allowed Thiago Almada's soft free-kick to skip past him the day after being called "one of the worst goalkeepers" in United's history in a pre-match spat involving the club's former midfielder Nemanja Matic
Teenage defender Leny Yoro equalised just before half-time and Joshua Zirkzee's header in the 88th minute looked to have won the game for United at Groupama Stadium
But Onana failed to hold Georges Mikautadze's low shot deep into stoppage time and Rayan Cherki poked home the rebound
leaving the tie in the balance ahead of the return clash at Trafford next week
United manager Ruben Amorim was quick to defend Onana and turn his attention to the second leg
"There is nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help."
"We have one more game to change everything and that should be our focus," he added
United's ability to rebuild a squad in danger of the club's worst top-flight finish since relegation in 1974 likely hinges on sealing a return to the Champions League
Winning the Europa League is the only way they can qualify for the elite competition
Failure to do so is predicted to cost United at least £100 million ($127.6 million) at a time when the club's financial headroom is already minimal
this was their first meeting since the last 16 of the 2007-08 Champions League
United went on to win their third European crown
Lyon scooped the last of seven consecutive French titles
Perhaps no player has encapsulated United's domestic woes this term more than Rasmus Hojlund
whose five goals in Europe outnumber the three he's managed in the Premier League
The Denmark striker scuffed an inviting chance horribly wide from Patrick Dorgu's cut-back as United gradually began to threaten
with Lyon defender Moussa Niakhate getting a key touch to divert a crisp Bruno Fernandes effort over the bar
Any momentum United had built dissipated when Onana failed to keep out Almada's free-kick
The goalkeeper was already in the spotlight after Matic's jibe
The ex-United midfielder's stinging rebuke came in response to Onana claiming the Red Devils were "way better" than their opponents
comments that Amorim insisted were taken out of context
Lyon fans revelled in Onana's misfortune as he allowed Almada's curling set-piece to bounce off his gloves and nestle in the far corner
United equalised at the end of the half as Manuel Ugarte hooked the ball back into the box after Lucas Perri punched away Fernandes' free-kick
and Yoro glanced home his first goal for the club
Alexandre Lacazette sliced wide moments after coming on early in the second half following brilliant work from Mikautadze
Corentin Tolisso pierced the United defence but shot tamely at Onana

Manchester United 5-4 Lyon (7-6 agg): Maguire seals historic Europa League comebackManchester United were 4-2 down in extra time and heading out of the Europa League on Thursday
only to stage an unbelievable comeback.Harry Maguire headed the winner as Manchester United staged a miraculous extra-time comeback to beat 10-man Lyon 5-4 in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie
United had been cruising at 2-0 up with 20 minutes of the 90 to play
only for an astonishing collapse to see them taken to extra time and go 4-2 down by the 109th minute
Bruno Fernandes' penalty restored some hope
then Kobbie Mainoo's 120th-minute curler and Maguire's back-post header one minute later sealed the most remarkable of European comebacks
It means Ruben Amorim's hopes of winning silverware in his first season at the helm remain intact
with a semi-final against tournament favourites Athletic Bilbao to come
United produced an excellent first-half performance and led within 10 minutes
Alejandro Garnacho stepped onto Fernandes' pass on the right side of the area and cut the ball back for Manuel Ugarte
Only a full-stretch save from Andre Onana denied Rayan Cherki a glorious equaliser
then Fernandes rattled the crossbar with an over-the-shoulder volley at the other end
But United got the second goal their first-half pressure warranted in stoppage time
as Diogo Dalot outmuscled Nicolas Tagliafico and finished low across goal
Lyon introduced some nerves through Corentin Tolisso's close-range header with 19 minutes of the 90 remaining
then Tagliafico's shot crept over the line despite the best efforts of Onana six minutes later
Despite Tolisso receiving his second booking just before the 90 minutes were up
Lyon continued to press in extra time and went ahead through Cherki's left-footed drive in the 104th minute
A penalty conceded by Luke Shaw and converted by Alexandre Lacazette had Lyon seemingly coasting into the semi-finals at 4-2
but when Thiago Almada kicked the bottom of Casemiro's boot
Fernandes kept his cool from 12 yards to offer United a lifeline
the Red Devils staged the most remarkable of rescue acts

Data debrief: United's greatest European night
United have enjoyed plenty of European success over the years
but perhaps no victory quite as dramatic as this one
This was just the second time United had won a game by a 5-4 scoreline in their entire history
with the other coming against Arsenal in February 1958
It was also the first game in major European football history to see five goals scored after the start of extra time
was the first 120th-minute winner in any Europa League game
and the first in any major European tie since Atletico Madrid beat Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League in March 2020
Borussia Dortmund have recently been linked with a move for Olympique Lyon's Rayan Cherki
the Black and Yellows are still weighing up whether to make an offer for the 21-year-old before the transfer window closes
New Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac will reportedly play a key role in deciding whether a move is made
with Cherki having been told he can leave for €22.5 million
“Of course we are looking at options on the market
But I think we will remain calm - that we will use the next few days to perhaps do something,” Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl recently told Ruhr24.
“But it's also possible that we won't do anything at all
We will analyse all this together with Niko.”
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder has scored five goals and provided eight assists in 25 appearances for Lyon this season
Dino Toppmöller's Eintracht Frankfurt hope to shake off a two-game-winless run and get their overall form back on track this evening at the famous "Park Olympique"
The 2021/22 Europa League champions need a win in order to keep their hopes of attaining this year's knockouts alive.
Toppmöller makes X changes to the XI that ended up drawing Augsburg in the league last Saturday
Slumping Egyptian striker Omar Marmoush makes way for Mario Götze
Nmandi Collins takes over for Rasmus Kristensen at right back
It looks as if the SGE formation will shift from a 4-4-2 to a 4-2-3-1
but it all depends on whether Tuta will line up in midfield or central defense
A 4-4-2 with Hugo Ekitiké and Fares Chaibi up top is also a possibility.
Manchester United will host Olympique Lyon at the legendary Old Trafford for the second leg of the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals
The English side comes in under heavy pressure—not just for letting the lead slip away in France
but also after getting hammered 4-1 by Newcastle in the Premier League
this European competition is their last shot at rescuing an otherwise disappointing season
With no real hopes of qualifying for Europe through the league
United has no choice but to win at home if they want to keep their Europa League dream alive
Lyon comes into this one riding high after coming from behind twice in the first leg and holding strong in fourth place in Ligue 1
and they’ve got their sights set on a spot in the semis
Since both teams are far off the pace in their domestic leagues
the Europa League has become their main target to finish the season with something meaningful
it’s also a direct ticket to next season’s Champions League
With players like Zirkzee and Cherki standing out in the first leg
this clash at Old Trafford is expected to be intense and evenly matched
All signs point to a high-stakes showdown at one of Europe’s most iconic stadiums
Andre Onana 5 – Two big saves to deny Rayan Cherki and Corentin Tolisso in either half
Couldn’t do much about Lyon’s first goal but didn’t cover himself in glory for their second
Noussair Mazraoui 7 – Solid defending
Brilliant over-the-top ball into Bruno Fernandes’ path for United’s opener
Harry Maguire 9 – Set the standard early on with an aggressive tackle that drew applause from the home crowd
Excellent diagonal ball to Diogo Dalot for United’s second of the game at the stroke of half time
Got his head to many of United’s corners although United couldn’t capitalise right until the end
Didn’t shy away from bombing forward when the opportunity presented itself and made a breathtaking tackle with his head late in the second half against Fofana
Diogo Dalot 7 – Another good performance at wing-back
the highlight of which was a spectacular turn and finish just before the break
Manuel Ugarte 7 – Got into the box well for his goal
producing a number of important challenges and interceptions
Casemiro 7.5 – Solid in the middle of the park
coming up with one or two eye-catching backheels and silky passes
Came close to finding the back of the net after winning the ball on the edge of Lyon’s box but he couldn’t beat Lucas Perri
Won a late penalty for United that set the ball rolling for the comeback
especially when the Frenchman drifted inside
Sloppy on the ball at times and wasn’t aware of Ainsley Maitland-Niles behind him for Lyon’s equaliser
A game the January signing will want to forget
Had his fingerprints on almost everything good that United did
Came close to scoring twice in the first half – once with a daring volley attempt that struck the crossbar and then with a shot from just outside the box that just dragged wide
Almost got on the score sheet once again in the second half with a cheeky free-kick effort into the bottom corner but Perri got a hand to it
Finally got his goal with seven minutes of extra time left
converting from the penalty spot after Casemiro was fouled inside the box
Alejandro Garnacho 8 – One of his better performances for United in a while
Great touch and turn of pace to take out two Lyon defenders and aim a low cross into an incoming Ugarte
Dangerous on the break and was presented with some opportunities to score
one of which saw him sit down a Lyon defender
Rasmus Hojlund 6 – Much better tonight
Constantly dropped deep to bring his teammates into play and was mostly getting it right
Held up the ball a lot better and even got into some promising positions
Could have done his confidence a world of good but still plenty of positives to take
Luke Shaw 3 – Recklessly conceded a penalty in the second half of extra time
which looked like it had guaranteed Lyon’s progression to the next round of the competition
Mason Mount 4 – Made no difference whatsoever
Kobbie Mainoo 8 – Slotted at number nine and grabbed the equaliser for United very late on with a world-class finish
Christian Eriksen 4 – Another waste of a substitution
Harry Amass 6 – Injected some energy into the team and tried to be positive
