MANCHESTER UNITED have beaten Lyon 7-6 on aggregate to progress to the semi-finals of the Europa League in the most dramatic of circumstances
Manuel Ugarte broke the deadlock on 10 minutes
finishing a superb move to put the English giants ahead in the crunch tie
Diogo Dalot gave the Red Devils breathing room just before half time with a striker-like finish
Corentin Tolisso got one back for Lyon with 70 minutes on the clock before Nicolas Tagliafico made the clash 2-2 and sent the dramatic tie to extra-time
The French side went into the additional period with 10-men after Tolisso received his second yellow card moments before the full time whistle
but it didn't matter as Rayan Cherki's rocket put Lyon in front
It went from bad to worse for United as Alexandre Lacazette netted a penalty to make it 6-4 on aggregate in the second half of extra time
But an unbelievable seven-minute period saw United turn the tie on its head after goals from Bruno Fernandes
and finally a stunning winner from Harry Maguire at the death put Man Utd in the Europa League semi-finals

A 27-year-old Moroccan man was arrested and taken into police custody following a knife attack that injured four people in the Lyon metro on Sunday afternoon.
"An individual armed with a knife injured four people in the Lyon metro between the Debourg and Place Jean-Jaurès stations," Lyon public prosecutor Thierry Dran informed local media.
The suspect, previously unknown to the police, has been hospitalised multiple times for psychiatric issues and has been subject to an obligation to leave French territory since 2022, Fabienne Buccio, Prefect of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and Prefect of the Rhône, told BFMTV.
"Two victims were in critical condition, one was moderately injured, and another sustained minor injuries," a prefecture release said.
"Several traumatised witnesses received psychological support," the statement added.
The suspect has reportedly been taken into police custody, with investigations entrusted to the Lyon interdepartmental directorate of the national police (DIPN).
According to a police source, two of the injured were stabbed in the abdomen and another in the arm. Firefighters reported that two victims were treated in the metro in critical condition.
The main victim, who suffered the most severe injuries, was a 17-year-old unaccompanied minor from Guinea, according to a police source.
"The City of Lyon condemns this particularly serious act," Mohamed Chihi, deputy mayor responsible for security, posted on X.
Rhône prefect Fabienne Buccio expressed her "support" for the victims and their families, thanked the "staff of the interdepartmental directorate of the national police for the swift arrest of the suspect," and praised the intervention of the fire department and the ambulance service.
Lyon 1-2 Paris Saint-Germain: Mbappe fails to score but Ligue 1 champions clinch Coupe de FranceKylian Mbappe did not score on his final appearance for Paris Saint-Germain, but Luis Enrique's team still beat Lyon to seal a treble.Paris Saint-Germain beat Lyon 2-1 in the Coupe de France final courtesy of first-half strikes from Ousmane Dembele and Fabian Ruiz.
Making his final appearance for PSG, the club's all-time record goalscorer Kylian Mbappe failed to get on the scoresheet at Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Saturday.
Yet it mattered not as PSG sealed a domestic treble in Luis Enrique's first season in charge, winning the Coupe de France for a record-extending 15th time.
Dembele put PSG ahead after 23 minutes when Nuno Mendes' cross found him unmarked in the six-yard box to coolly head home.
Midfielder Ruiz doubled the advantage with a strike from a tight angle at the second attempt.
Lyon pulled one back 10 minutes into the second half thanks to Jake O'Brien's towering header off a corner, before PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma produced a superb save minutes later.
PSG had to withstand late pressure, but ultimately got the job done as Mbappe signed off with another trophy.
Mbappe will bow out with 256 goals in 308 appearances for PSG across his seven seasons at the club since joining from Monaco in 2017.
He has won all there is to win domestically, though the Champions League has evaded him.
With Real Madrid seemingly his next destination, Mbappe will surely break that duck in the Spanish capital.

VIDEO | Ligue 1 Highlights: Clermont Foot vs Olympique LyonClermont Foot hosted Olympique Lyon at home
with Lyon clinching a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to Orel Mangala's goal
This win marks a turnaround for Lyon in a season that started off rough
bringing them closer to European contention
Clermont Foot is officially relegated from Ligue 1
while Olympique Lyon moves up to seventh place with 50 points
just outside European spots on goal difference with two matches left to play

Unless I’m really drunk from all the wine and champagne tasting
Paris, Nice, Lille are lovely cities, Lourdes is sacred ground and you can’t beat their southern climate and joie de vivre. Like the USA, they have a history with crazy presidents. Every year there’s a media circus called le Tour de France

Roma would play in the UEFA Cup (remember the defeat vs Middlesbrough
good times) so when I watched some CL games
I shifted my attention to other interesting teams
the French flag combo white-red-blue was perfect—it's a shame about the Renault logo though
Anyway, Lyon was already the best of the best in France, winning La Ligue 1 four consecutive times since 2002. But from time to time they also excelled in Europe. In 2005, they topped a CL group that included Real Madrid
and Olympakios with a massive 16 (!) points
They beat the crap out of PSV in the next round (5-0 aggregate) and they were on the verge of the semi-final if not for two late goals in AC Milan from Inzaghi and Shevchenko
In other words: Lyon was a powerhouse in Europe
The season before they also won their group and reached the quarter-finals
Who can forget the masterclass vs Werder Bremen
Also narrowly eliminated by PSV on penalties then
In 2006 Lyon comfortably won La Ligue 1 for a fifth consecutive time
A huge gap between them and challenger Bordeaux
PSG didn’t even end in the top 6 back then
Olympique would go on to win a sixth and seventh title in a row with Bordeaux ending their reign in 2009
who featured in this Lyon 2005-2006 team exactly
Well not midfielder Essien or forwards Frau and Nilmar
Lyon did have a tonload of French talent in its team: Wiltord
Compare it with Italy’s NT and Juventus’ supremacy in Serie A
But there were also stars on the squad who didn’t speak French
free-kick specialist and the closest thing to Francesco Totti since God who created the universe back in..
Lyon’s midfield was out of this world and had more than enough firepower
Prodigies Benzema and Ben Arfa were on the bench
There was also one familiar face: Norwegian oak John Carew
who played a couple of games for AS Roma two years before
A not-so-successful spell—he did better at Lyon
The other striker upfront was Brazilian Fred
agile forward who curiously never joined a second top European side in his career
Gregory Coupet was both Lyon and France’s top goalkeeper
he and Mexes would have been a great pair of 70s disco singers
The backs were all French: the afforementioned Clerc and Reveillère at RB
After their record run in La Ligue, Lyon has gone quite AWOL, to be honest. They haven’t won a single title since 2008 but did finish second on three occasions. They won one French cup and Supercup, that’s all. Their best result was not so long ago, just last year, in fact, when they played the semi-final in a COVID-19 special edition of the Champions League. They beat both Juventus and Manchester City in the knockouts
Today there’s still some pretty decent talent at Lyon: Aouar
and Cherki continue the fine history of Brazilian and French talents in the southeast of France
while Depay and Ekambi can terrorize every defense in Europe
there’s your obligatory Belgian guy on the team as well
isn’t that good old Rudi Garcia leading the troops nowadays
that Lyon team mid-2000s remains really special and unique
Even though Roma didn’t hang out with Europe’s best that year

Just over a year after Phyllis Lyon passed away at the age of 95
the home that she shared for over five decades with her wife and life partner Del Martin is being declared a city landmark
And it's the first time a piece of lesbian history is getting landmark status in the western U.S
to remain in her home with near constant care
partly by lying about the fact that they were caregivers.)
the SF Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to grant city landmark status to the home
which will come with a brass plaque out front that will join the couple's initials imprinted in the concrete of the sidewalk
"The home they shared for more than half a century was the site of many community gatherings and has clear historic value that needs to be preserved and memorialized,” said District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman on Tuesday
"I’m proud of this historic action to create the first local landmark focused on the history of the lesbian community."
The landmark designation also had to pass muster with the city's Historic Preservation Commission

and bought the Noe Valley home two years later
They became fixtures of both the local LGBTQ activist movement and the lesbian social scene well into their later years — and in 2004 they were officially married in San Francisco City Hall
the first to be given a marriage license by then-Mayor Gavin Newsom
an architectural historian who specializes in LGBTQ heritage sites
tells the Chronicle that the early meetings of the Daughters of Bilitis happened at 651 Duncan
"They provided a place for lesbians who were really
really in the closet to hang out and dance have holiday potlucks
so they wouldn’t have to go home and hang out with their homophobic relatives," Watson says
has a daughter from a prior marriage (before she came out as a lesbian)
who helped oversee Lyon's care in her later years
and she sold it to a new owner in September 2020
The property actually includes an adjacent vacant lot
sounds like she was aware of the landmarking plans for the Lyon-Martin House — but she tells the Chronicle that she plans on building a new home on the vacant property
The next steps are likely to include a plaque on the street below the house
but there are other ideas in the works as well
A group called "Friends of Lyon-Martin House," which includes fiscal sponsor the GLBT Historical Society
say they would like to see the one-bedroom cottage become something useful
like a student residence and a center for LGBTQ+ activism and history
The Board of Supervisors still has to take a second
ceremonial vote on the landmarking next Tuesday

Lisa Ballard’s recent piece
“Her Special Mountain,” which appears in the March/April 2018 issue of Adirondack Explorer
struck a chord with me and rekindled some great memories
but there’s always one that’s yours… a favorite you climb over and over
It’s your go-to hike when you need exercise
you want to share quality trail time with someone else
is the highest point in the northern Adirondacks and offers commanding views in all directions
She first climbed it via the old trail when it was being replaced
the Adirondack Almanack reported the change:
“The old, 2.5-mile Lyon Mountain Trail was very steep and difficult. It was also vulnerable to erosion. ADK’s Professional Trail Crew recently completed work cutting a new 3.5-mile trail that takes a more leisurely route
incorporating 11 switchbacks in some of the steepest sections
The new trail section provides a more scenic walk and passes many exposed bedrock outcrops.”
While growing up in northeastern Clinton County in the 1960s
I had long admired the massive profile of Lyon Mountain
but with no hikers among family and friends
it remained a distant love until my personal independence day arrived (owning my first car)
One of my earliest trips was to Lyon Mountain in early spring
Like Paul Anka wrote and Sinatra and Presley famously sang
I parked along the secondary road at the mountain’s eastern base and bushwhacked with the aid of map and compass
forging ahead in blue jeans and cumbersome boots known among area farmers as “sh**kickers.” After many difficult hours
including a final stretch of physical torture up a steep incline thick with evergreens and more than four feet of snow
After a few more bushwhack ascents from different locations
This allowed for long hours on the mountaintop picnicking on the “generous swath of bedrock” noted by Lisa Ballard
and devouring tremendous views from the tower and rocks
I discovered what became a must-visit spot on every climb thereafter — a summit spring
in a cleft between rocky outcroppings that offered views of Whiteface and Catamount (the latter of which would become another of my favorite repeat climbs)
we drank from it back then) and beautiful scenery
afforded certain quiet and solitude if noisy hikers (a real rarity at the time) arrived at the tower area
The next four decades were filled with hundreds of mountain-climbing
Every year I climbed it three or four times as life rolled on
By the time each of my three children was a few months old
they had eaten (and slept) on the mountain’s summit
so at least a couple dozen climbs were made with one child strapped to my chest in a front-pack and another on my back in a child-carrier pack (early and less-than-optimal renditions of the quality packs available today)
I was thus sandwiched while holding the hand of my oldest
the four of us linked together as we climbed
The fire tower was still manned in those days
so the Gooleys became familiar faces to the observers
the observer on duty asked if I had carried my youngest child to the top and set him down for the final stretch
Josh climbed every step of the way himself
at which point he was pronounced the youngest to have ever climbed from bottom to top under his own power
had just turned four.) It was an informal declaration
but one of many wonderful recollections still fresh in my mind nearly forty years later
Another source of pleasant memories is John Kowalowski
a former iron miner from Lyon Mountain (the mines closed in 1967) and a baseball player of great local renown
He spent roughly a decade manning the tower and became a cherished part of each trip during fire-watch season
I differ from many in my dislike of so many switchbacks
But that’s just a matter of personal preference
based on two things: a desire for physical challenge (the original trail certainly provided that!)
the old trail will always be a prohibitive favorite because of the memories and its history
Climbers who knew where to make a strategic detour early in the ascent could visit the little-known slopes of the short-lived
And several minutes shy of the mountain peak
inviting both to tired hikers and anyone interested in catching a scenic glimpse of Bradley Pond to the north
The most enchanting place on the trail back then is now in ruins
described by Lisa Ballard after her first climb of the mountain: “When we came to the remains of the old firewatcher’s cabin
a short wall of rocks with more grass than mortar filling the cracks
the boys’ enthusiasm waned.” I found that passage particularly interesting
the cabin was one of two sure-fire “carrots” (the observer’s summit tower was the other) used by parents as incentives to keep children engaged on a difficult journey
beginning with an adventurous/scary climb in nearly constant wind
and culminating in a crawl maneuver through the trap door into the cab (the booth at the top)
there was the fun of identifying landmarks near and far via the circular map on the round tabletop; and if no one else was waiting below
protected from the elements by strong windows all around and surrounded by a fantastic panoramic view
But well shy of the summit was an equally enticing attraction
what everyone referred to as “the ranger’s cabin,” located at the base of the final
It was used by Kowalowski and others for supplies and relaxation
John sometimes slept there rather than return home at the end of a day’s watch
he slept at home and returned daily to make the very tough climb at a fast and steady pace
the cabin was much more than just a station for fire observers
While I seldom stop to rest while climbing
became an exception that I visited at least briefly on every ascent
the cabin was open to anyone wishing to catch their breath and avail themselves of the “amenities.” Hikers were welcome to use the supplies on hand — peanut butter
The “code” (it even appeared on notes in the cabin during John’s tenure) was that visitors should replace items that were depleted and help keep things shipshape
Repeat hikers were key to replenishing the cabin’s stock
most of which were used by appreciative parents who hadn’t planned well or needed a brief distraction that their children would enjoy
but the place was well kept by all and a joy to visit
the food — was treated with respect as community property
even though the cabin belonged to the state and most of the contents were John’s
The storage shed was also in good condition
as was the outhouse off in the woods (visited often by porcupines that chewed on it regularly
perhaps best of all: for at least fifty feet
the downhill area just below the steps was clear of trees
so sitting on the porch afforded a beautiful view of Chazy Lake
That all helps explain how Lyon Mountain became “my” mountain
Despite the fact that much of what originally drew me there is gone
and the mountain itself remains alluring enough for Lisa to have chosen it as her own
A newspaper article from more than a century ago cited many of the same wildflowers that she mentioned
I miss clambering up the steep
trying to reach the summit in personal-record time (from car to tower
53 minutes in blue jeans and sh**kickers was my fastest)
and partly to spend a long day drinking in the views from the top
Clear skies reveal Montreal’s skyscrapers 57 miles to the north (you can even ID some of them with Google Maps)
Mount Mansfield and Camel’s Hump are hard to beat for views across the lake
I’m appreciative that photos and memories from long ago contain no windmills
but purists will be dismayed that a great number of 400-foot towers on wind farms are part of today’s view from Lyon Mountain’s summit
where controversy surrounded alteration of the treasured Vermont skyline
a few towers are visible on ridges beyond Lake Champlain’s eastern shore
But for reasons cited here by me and by Lisa in Adirondack Explorer — and despite the changes — Lyon Mountain will always be my favorite
Next week: the history of Lyon Mountain’s “Old Trail,” including Verplanck Colvin’s connections

I was just talking with my husband after reading about Lyon Mountain and the fire tower
just a tid bit thought you would be interested in
the Cayea’s had a presence in Lyon Mountain
and a couple of my husbands brothers worked in the mines
as did an uncle Lawrence and his father Cliff
Pat was the last one to man the tower (1982-88)
the Cayeas are certainly part of Lyon Mountain’s history
I’m guessing you don’t know of my work on the village’s past and my coverage of the topics you mentioned
I’ve written two books about Lyon Mountain
and included in them are details on Cliff’s injury and the deaths of Zeb and Lawrence

Bradshaw found herself battling for every out late down the stretch against rival South Lyon East in the Lakes Valley Conference championship game on Wednesday
After South Lyon built a 5-0 after five innings
East loaded the bases in the sixth and seventh and had the tying run on third base before the Lions escaped with the narrow 5-4 championship victory
It was not how Bradshaw would have drawn it up
but the end result is what mattered the most to her
you get a little tired sometimes (and) things got kind of out of control,” Bradshaw said
“But it’s just going back to all your training and all the things that led up to that and getting out of it – and that’s what did it
it’s not always going to be perfect and it’s not going to always be pretty
but our cushion and the way we played the game up to that point allowed us to make those mistakes that we’ll clean up through the rest of practice.”
East recorded five of its seven hits in the sixth and seventh inning
two-RBI double by Sophia Propps in the top of the seventh to cut South Lyon’s lead to 5-3
East’s Paulina Ankawi came up to the plate right after and hit a groundout to second base
but not before scoring teammate Alyssa LemMon to make it 5-4 with two outs and a runner at third
Melissa Cosens was next at the plate for East to try and tie the game
Cosens fouled off Bradshaw three times before connecting on a hard hit ball to deep left field that South Lyon’s Izzy Nooe tracked down for the catch
“I always have confidence in (my fielders),” Bradshaw said
getting ahead in the count and letting them do their thing and working together and trusting each other in the end.”
South Lyon (26-3) collected its runs in various ways
but an RBI triple by junior center fielder Cece Dudek in the bottom of the fifth proved to be the valuable difference in the victory as it gave the Lions a 5-0 lead
Dudek connect on a 2-1 pitch and produced the hardest hit ball of the day off East pitcher Anna Lassan
scoring Julia Duncan from first base in the process
I was kind of struggling the game before this,” Dudek said
“I was kind of just looking for anything outside because that’s all she was pitching
and I just saw it and closed my eyes and hit it.”
Although swinging with eyes closed is not the recommended approach
“I always seem to close my eyes when I get a really good hit,” Dudek said
Although it was a closer call than South Lyon coach David Langlois would have liked
he was not surprised due to playing them in a doubleheader just eight days prior
We get their best game and they get our best game
We knew the whole game we need to get one more
The bottom of our lineup took care of business
in five in the LVC semifinal game earlier in the day
in the second semifinal game before turning around 20 minutes later to square off against its rival and the defending Division 1 state champions
East coach Paul Nieto was happy to see his girls battle back and push South Lyon up until the final at-bat
our attacks on strikes got better and we started laying off the rise ball
East is one year removed from a season when it belted a state record 70 home runs
Nieto believes this year’s squad now looks more confident at the plate than it has all season
(Bradshaw) is one of the top pitchers – other than
our pitcher – one of the top pitchers in the state
and we had great approaches in the end of the game against her,” Nieto said
we’re ready to take on whoever else is in front of us
I think our confidence is high right now and I’m excited for districts
“I told the girls in the beginning that everything we do is to prep for districts
I want to win a league and I want to go to tournaments and be successful
but everything we do is to get better every game and get ready for that Saturday in districts – and we are.”
Bradshaw finished the game with four earned runs and seven hits against her
but she also struck out nine in seven innings
That was on top of her five-inning perfect game against Lakeland earlier in the day when she struck out 11 batters
Lassan gave up nine hits and four earned runs while striking out five batters and walking one
South Lyon opened the game with three consecutive singles
with junior Emily Johnson knocking in the first run of the game with the third single of the inning
Dudek knocked in her first of two RBIs on the day when she grounded out to second and scored Olivia Simeone
The bottom of South Lyon’s lineup came through in the bottom of the fourth as well
Renee Porter reached on an error that allowed Dudek to score from second to make it 3-0
Porter baited the East defense into getting her into a pickle between first and second
allowing pinch runner Cassie Linse to score and make it 4-0
that’s stuff we practice a lot,” Langlois said
so it’s stuff we practice a lot and the kids were able accomplish it

considering the old trail’s age and historical significance
“Old” in this case applies in two ways: it’s the original trail of the few ever built to the summit
and it was 132 years old when it was abandoned for the new route
Do the math and you’ll find that it was created in 1876
the mountain was still so remote that unless one arrived by rail
the trip from Plattsburgh to the trailhead (via dirt road
and no road) took longer than the ascent itself
local newspapers reported that Meader Brothers’ Hotel at Chazy Lake offered “elegant boats
Should you desire to take a trip into the clouds
there is a plain trail just cut from the hotel to the summit of Lyon Mountain
where you will get an unsurpassed mountain view if the day is clear.”
One source credited the Meader brothers — Farmer (taken from their father’s middle name)
and possibly others — for laying out and building the trail
who also operated a hotel on the lake shore
The three of them worked for the Meaders and others as guides or helpers on ascents by tourists and visitors
The earliest climbs of Lyon Mountain were all-encompassing adventures compared to today’s up-and-down efforts
constructed camping facilities within minutes of the highest point (Lyon Mountain’s summit is a broad surface estimated to cover 100 acres)
They also built a raised platform at the peak “in the tops of four trees
with a strong ladder leading up to it” to ensure an unobstructed view in all directions
It was encouraged as part of the wilderness experience
culminating in a spectacular event: viewing sunrise from the highest point in the region
Enjoying the same thing a century later gave me the added feeling of sharing history
Visitors to the summit back then made reference to “the Spring,” “the Gorge” (or “Flume”)
and “perpendicular walls of rock,” all of them well worth rediscovering and exploring in modern times as well
But just sitting and enjoying open views from the rocky summit is also very satisfying
The mountain was named after Nathaniel Lyon
who settled in the Saranac River valley around 1803
and shortly after moved a few miles northwest to take up farming near Chazy Lake
when mining of the world’s highest-grade iron ore began on the opposite (western) base
the resulting village was known briefly as Lyon Mountainville before the name Lyon Mountain became firmly attached to both the village and the peak
that within two months of the trail’s opening
the first woman (accompanied by her brother) climbed to the summit on August 11
But the big news wasn’t so much that a female had made the ascent: it was that she (Hattie Lyon) and her brother (first name unknown) were the grandchildren of the mountain’s namesake
Four days after the Lyons completed the same-day climb and descent
a group of ten women and seven men made an overnight trip to the top
Subsequent newspaper reports and word-of-mouth made the jaunt a popular undertaking for many years
both among tourists and the skyrocketing population of Lyon Mountain village
which had grown quickly from a few hundred settlers to a few thousand
the highest-profile visitor to the mountain’s summit (after Hattie Lyon of course)
commissioned by the state to survey the Adirondacks
Among the headquarter sites he selected was Lyon Mountain
a choice that ultimately benefited both Colvin’s work and locals who guided trips to the summit
His survey required that very heavy equipment be transported to the mountaintop
where a cabin and observation tower were needed
The established trail saved his crew the trouble of cutting their own swath
and they made many improvements to the existing path
Colvin provided this assessment when he reached the summit in mid-August 1878: “It was a broad
seeming vastly larger at close acquaintance than it had appeared as seen from De Bar mountain in the fall of 1877
It would still require a week or more of labor to prepare the station.”
Dozens of guided hikers visited the peak that summer while Colvin’s men toiled away
When his measurements were completed and Colvin’s crew departed
they left behind a log cabin and lookout tower at the summit (on the same site where today’s retired fire tower stands)
overnight visitors to the summit could avail themselves of the cabin
complete with enough bunks for a party of ten
or use the covered shelters built in “the Flume.”
The trail beginning on Chazy Lake’s southwestern shore provided exclusive access to the peak for the first few years
but it’s a little-known fact that another trail provided competition during those early years
Lyon Mountain had grown to rival Plattsburgh as the most populous location in the county
and many of the mining-village residents took trips to the summit
which was also a popular place to bring friends and family visiting from the outside world
the decision was made in summer 1881 to build a summit trail beginning at the village outskirts
on the opposite (western) side of the mountain from Davis’s (which was on Chazy Lake)
it was completed — effectively the old-fashioned version of modern gondolas
for instead of hikers toiling breathlessly in anticipation of hard-earned scenic payoffs
allowing “climbers” to remain astride horses to within a short distance of the summit
The idea didn’t catch on well enough for the trail to become self-maintained through frequent use
and despite plans to revive it in 1886 and 1888
The trail used by nearly all climbers thereafter was the original one located on Chazy Lake’s southwestern shore
It began with a relatively easy grade on what today is known as the Lowenberg Road
the beginning of which was eventually marked by the Observer’s Cabin
“may have been constructed around 1916.” (Idiot vandals robbed and burned the cabin more than 60 years later
which proved too heavy to carry down the mountain
thus making off with virtually nothing of value
And if you’re offended by the generous term “idiot,” I’m offended that you’re offended.)
Since the first trail was cut in 1876
it seems Lyon Mountain nearly always had some sort of tower at the summit
The men who cleared the trail built a log lookout tower to give their guided clients a better overall view (otherwise
the relatively short trees on the summit blocked visuals that include the Chateaugay Lakes
and climbers after his survey crew departed
Lyon Mountain was among the fire observation stations established in 1910
A DEC fire tower study published in 2010 says
records of 1910 indicated a log tower station
The Lyon Mountain Forest Fire Observation Station was used continuously until its closure at the end of the 1988 season.” Lyon Mountain’s was one of 12 steel towers added that year (1917) utilizing stairs instead of ladders for access
are often marked by historical signs to help us remember them
but an old hiking trail can’t really be effectively marked — no one would visit an abandoned trail so no one would see the signs
I appreciate the opportunity to share here the history of a long-enduring
historic mountain trail that is now defunct
It’s kind of like saying a belated goodbye to a dear old friend

I grew up in the life long home of Hattie Lyon
The home still belongs to my father who has some copies of letters written by Hattie that mentions camping on the summit and the view of the land for miles around..it’s pretty neat
My father is proud to own such a great piece of history

Associations and residents near the Pierre-Bénite plant in the 'chemical valley' are taking legal action against the company
after an investigation revealed high levels of PFAS in the blood of local inhabitants and employees
By Stéphane Mandard and Stéphane Horel
he had to undergo total removal of a testicle after being diagnosed with a tumor
a small commune in the Rhône department close to the "chemical valley" south of Lyon
the area of France most polluted by PFAS (per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances)
Ever since he learned a few months ago that the water in his community was contaminated with these highly toxic chemical compounds
he has been unable to avoid making the connection with his little boy's illness: "We don't know for sure
but we do know that exposure to PFAS increases the risk of developing testicular cancer tenfold
37 residents of the "chemical valley" (including 16 children) and 10 associations and unions have decided to take legal action to put an end to the pollution
they applied to the Lyon criminal court on May 25 for an environmental penal sanction against the Arkema chemical group
which is responsible for major PFAS discharges into the Rhône
"We have chosen a fast-track application to stop Arkema discharging PFAS into the Rhône as quickly as possible
and to measure the extent of the contamination by taking new samples
at the polluter's expense," explained Camille Panisset
general secretary of the Lyon branch of Notre Affaire à Tous
which filed an initial application a year ago
estimates that "more than 350,000 people are affected by this health and environmental scandal."
when an investigation broadcast on television channel France 2's Envoyé Spécial program detected high levels of forever chemicals in the air
soil (the stadium in the municipality of Pierre-Bénite) and breast milk (young mothers are now among the plaintiffs) around Arkema
which had been discharging large quantities of PFAS into the Rhône for decades

“That’s the last time you’re going to beat us like that!”
“He was obviously disappointed,” says Jean-Michel Aulas
Sitting in his office at the French club, Aulas tells The Athletic how Barcelona’s then-president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, reacted to their 4-1 defeat to Lyon in the 2019 Women’s Champions League final
after Lyon’s 2-1 away win over Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday to complete a 5-3 aggregate semi-final triumph
Europe’s two biggest women’s teams will face each other in the final in Turin on May 21
The hostile atmosphere in the Parc des Princes wasn’t going to stand in the way of the powerhouses of women’s football who reigned supreme for over a decade — 14 consecutive French titles from 2007 and five Champions League final wins in a row from 2016
the Parisians went close to ruining Lyon’s party for the second year in a row
a 43,254-strong crowd — a record attendance for a domestic women’s match in France — drowned out the PA announcement of Lyon’s starting XI
booed the visitors’ former PSG goalkeeper Christiane Endler
launched toilet paper streamers into the sky and jumped up and down to the beat of the drums and the chants of “Allez Paris!”

“Take these colours to Turin,” read a banner
white and red stripes which blanketed the Ultras while firecrackers peppered the Auteuil Stand
Former Ballon d’Or winner Ada Hegerberg looked to make sure it won’t be the colours of PSG on display at Juventus’ stadium in three weeks
with her looping header giving Lyon the lead on the night and a 4-2 aggregate advantage
Holding her hand to her ear and then thumping the Lyon badge on her chest
the Norwegian pointed to the pitch as if to say she ruled the capital
Her equaliser just past the hour set the Ultras wild
Lyon remained calm and drew on their experience
Wendie Renard and Amandine Henry had been here before
Compare that with PSG’s more inexperienced squad
who no longer have any players from that win seven and a half years ago
It was fitting that Hegerberg and Renard towered above the rest
the 6ft 2in stalwart who has been playing for Lyon since 2006
101 Champions League appearances to her name and much sought after by many clubs
giving Lyon a decisive two-goal cushion with seven minutes of the 90 remaining
an exemplary player who is a driving force for the team,” Lyon head coach Sonia Bompastor said afterwards
who first came to Lyon as a player in 2006
two years after women’s team FC Lyon became a part of the Olympique Lyonnais organisation
has seen the evolution of a dynasty built over the last 18 years by Aulas
“It starts with the whole institution’s belief to showcase women’s football,” Aulas
a change in mentality from inside the club… a very important philosophical
cultural change because the club’s foundations which came from a football background were extremely unprepared
and reluctant for the emergence of a modern
committed and high-performing women’s team
“It was an exclusively masculine club which wasn’t prepared for that.”
Thanks to his entrepreneurial background in the technology sector — Aulas is founder and CEO of Cegid
a software management company — the businessman was more prepared to highlight women’s values and skills
“My experience gave me a vision which is perhaps different to traditional investors in football,” he says
Asked where his interest to contribute to the women’s game came from
I understood the value of women and the confidence a family can give you
I drew on more conventionally feminine attributes to help make risks pay off
It took time to convince Lyon’s board members why Aulas had chosen to invest in the women’s game and during the first three or four years
the equality he envisaged didn’t correspond to the day-to-day running of the women’s team
Aulas saw that the women’s team balanced out Lyon’s men’s side
“The women’s team was bringing a balance to our performance because while there were more risks in men’s football (because of poor results) there were fewer in the women’s team (because of their dominance)
more calmness in their performance,” he says
the women’s team’s results proved their importance
and their emergence within the club coincided with them winning their first title in 2007
There came a point when the internal opposition the women once faced slowly disappeared
“Everyone considered that it was no longer a risky venture
it was an indispensable strategic part of the club,” Aulas says
They were the first European club to sign an American player and today some of their players are on the biggest contracts in the game
contributes to the women’s side in order for them to break even
continue to invest to match what their competitors are doing
“We have to increase the budget because of the competition in France, with PSG, the emergence of Barcelona — who have a distinctly larger budget — and the English clubs
who also have superior finances,” Aulas says
“We have been competing for two or three players over the last two years
and each time the players went to Barcelona
“It’s a big club but also the (financial) means given to these players were higher than what we had given.”
Aulas sees other clubs investing in their women’s teams as a double-edged sword
The increase in competition promotes women’s football but also makes winning titles more difficult
“Victory without risk brings triumph without glory,” Aulas says
For top players, Lyon is always a place to consider but it’s not the only place. Indeed, PSG, who have always been in Lyon’s shadow
are starting to close the gap — Saturday’s performance being a case in point
“We had some very difficult moments tonight,” PSG captain Grace Geyoro said
“Previously it was difficult to manage them
But they scored from a set piece when we had chances just before
What was evident was Lyon’s togetherness as a team
“Collectively we had a great performance — these are things that we had prepared during the week
because we knew that in preparation for this match
we would have to be connected to each other,” said Bompastor
It’s hard not to think about PSG in this context and what could have been for them. The incident in November involving Kheira Hamraoui, who was beaten with an iron bar by two masked men
her legs seemingly specifically targeted as she was left with deep purple bruises and gashes to her shins
who was arrested in connection with the attack six days later before being released without charge
The episode has caused ruptures within the group, particularly among the French players, the most recent of which took place the day before the semi-final first leg last Sunday, when Hamraoui insulted team-mate Sandy Baltimore during training
an altercation which left the latter in tears
Hamraoui subsequently chose not to travel with the team to Lyon
PSG’s overall sporting director Leonardo decided to distance Hamraoui from the squad
forcing her to miss training last week and then Saturday’s return leg
Although her presence may have caused further disruption in the dressing room
PSG missed her experience and threat in midfield with manager Didier Olle-Nicolle opting to start 18-year-old Laurina Fazer instead
Some have suggested her decision not to play in the first leg could be a reason for the club to terminate her contract
top striker Katoto has still not signed a new deal
Having had such a successful season last year
there’s plenty to review in the French capital
Lyon are still ahead of PSG in terms of the professionalism provided to their players on a daily basis
A training centre for the women’s team built right next to the men’s training ground is just one symbol of parity between the two sides
“There aren’t efforts for one that aren’t made for the other,” Aulas says
the women receive the same treatment whether that be physical or mental
They have access to the same treatment rooms
strength and conditioning and the players often cross paths in the shared restaurant at lunchtime
Bompastor requested a sports psychologist to work on the group dynamic and players’ confidence but also to help her own management skills
These are the marginal gains that can make the difference
you have to be able to manage the whole group — players who play
players who play less; choices have to be made at times during the season and if we want to go all the way
“The rule is that what is for the men must also be for the women,” explains Olivier Blanc
Lyon’s head of women’s football and former head of the men’s side’s communications team
Aulas brought Blanc over to ensure he had direct contact with the women’s club
evidence of the strong ties between them and the executive board
“We progress on the women’s side each time we progress on the men’s side.”
The same methodology is reflected at the academy level
Lyon created the first female academy in France in 2016
having won six league titles and two Champions Leagues with them as a player
Bompastor completed her coaching badges with the club before taking over from Jean-Luc Vasseur
who went on to have a brief stint managing Everton Women
Camille Abily has followed the same coaching path as her
Lyon are growing at home and abroad. In 2020, OL Groupe became the majority owner of OL Reign, an NWSL club based in Seattle
to expand their reach in the United States and to have a global recruitment strategy
They are also setting their sights on buying an Asian club with the belief that they can capitalise on an international approach
Two juggernauts of the women’s game going head to head
a repeat of the 2019 Champions League final in Budapest
The Catalan giants have grabbed the headlines with world-record crowds, their electric football and too many goals to count
The recent furore is deserved but timewise it’s a drop in the ocean compared to Lyon’s long-standing dominance
You can understand if Lyon feel put out that Barcelona have received so much attention
Just remember they have won the Champions League once
“It’s a team that has a lot of strength and we respect them a lot, but with our experience, the talent of our players, we are capable of going for the trophy,” said Bompastor, who watched the majority of Barcelona’s surprise 2-0 semi-final second leg defeat to Wolfsburg (they won 5-3 on aggregate) on Saturday before her team faced PSG
“There was women’s football before Barcelona
and it was played here for years,” Hegerberg told L’Equipe in April
“We have to win again to regain our place in world football

Any way the wind blows, doesn’t really matter to me (to me).
However, here are five things you may want to know about the 11th annual Lyon Township International Kite Festival, planned for June 1-2 at the James Atchison Memorial Park, 58000 Grand River Ave., in New Hudson.
Other than a $5 per vehicle parking fee, the event is free, and there are several hundred free kites that will be given away (while supplies last).
The festival’s headliners are professional kite flyers ready to put on a show, all day long. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, you can see performances from individuals, pairs, and teams with kites ranging in size, some closing in on nearly 1,000 square feet.
“We fly choreographed kites to music,” said Jon Trennepohl, Plymouth resident and owner of Kites and Fun Things. “It’s like watching Olympic ice skating, with performances 4-5 minutes at a time to music… We’ve got special guests from as far as Montreal, Indiana and London, Ontario.”
Also performing are the Windjammers, an international kite team from metro Detroit.
There are kites for kids to decorate and of course they are encouraged to use the spacious park to fly them, too.
“Just like everything else in our culture, we are trying to fight to get people back outside and do non-technical stuff, get kids way from phones and computers,” Trennepohl said. “It’s great that Lyon has endorsed this to do things outside.”
4. Fly high, friendly skies or notA good breeze helps, but is not an absolute necessity, especially with some remote-controlled kites.
“To put on really good show, we do need wind, but there are other things going on and we try to fill the gap,” Trennepohl said. “Usually up on that hill, we are getting something. Winds from 6-12 miles per hour is perfect. If it’s windier than that, we will deal with it.”
5. Down-to-Earth funWhile your eyes may be focused on the skies and the art happening above, there is plenty to enjoy on land — including live musical entertainment, carnival food including pizza, hamburgers and kettle corn; inflatables for the kids; a magician; Cinderella and Spider-Man; face-painting and a reptile exhibit that features a 20-foot boa constrictor and alligators.
“We are growing in status,” Festival Chairman Jim Chuck said. “We’ve gone from 500 people our first year to 5,000 attendees last year… It’s good family fun and really something to see.”

PARIS - The semifinals of the French Cup has been played on schedule amid the growing concerns over the spreading of coronavirus, as Kylian Mbappe's hat-trick sent Paris Saint-Germain into the final with an overwhelming 5-1 win at Lyon on Wednesday.
The French striker scored the equaliser for PSG only three minutes after Martin Terrie's opener in the 11th minute. The 21-year-old also contributed a stellar individual performance in the 70th minute, running the ball from the left and embarrassing Bruno Guimaraes and Marcelo before to slot past Lyon's goalkeeper Anthony Lopes. His third of the game came in the stoppage time, tapping home Neymar's cross to beat Lopes again.
Brazilian star Neymar converted a penalty to put the visitors 2-1 lead in the 64th minute, after the confirmation of the handball by VAR, while Fernando Marcal was dismissed after being handed his second yellow card.
Pablo Sarabia added a goal nine minutes to the regular time with a low strike from the edge of the penalty area following the chaos of Lyon's defence caused by a PSG corner.
Saint-Etienne will host Rennes in the other semifinal on Thursday.
The final is scheduled for April 25th at Stade de France.
Lacazette’s Brace Seals Olympique Lyon’s Comeback Win Over Brest in Ligue 1Two goals from Alexandre Lacazette, both assisted by Rayan Cherki, powered Olympique Lyon to a comeback victory at the Parc Olympique against Stade Brestois, strengthening their push for European spots in Ligue 1
After suffering a setback against Paris Saint-Germain in the previous round, ending a two-game winning streak, Paulo Fonseca’s side needed a response. However, things started poorly when Lacazette was penalized for a shirt pull on Mahdi Camara inside the box. American full-back Kenny Lala converted the penalty in the 15th minute, giving Brest the early lead.
But Lyon wasted no time in hitting back. In the 24th minute, a pinpoint pass from Cherki set up Lacazette, who slotted past Marco Bizot to level the score.
The decisive moment came in the 82nd minute when Cherki delivered another perfect cross from the left. Lacazette, positioned between the defenders, fired past Bizot to complete the comeback and secure a massive three points for Lyon. With this win, Olympique Lyon cements its sixth-place position, now five points clear of Strasbourg, and closes the gap on Lille, who lost to PSG, leaving just a two-point difference.

Cast a backwards glance towards the exploits of the exalted Saint-Étienne squad that waltzed to eight titles in 12 years during the 1960s and 70s, the beguiling Jean-Pierre Papin-led Marseillais that strung together four consecutive league trophies as the 1980s surrendered to the 90s
the brazen Qatari-backed Parisians who perfected their own run of four on the bounce this very decade
painted against a vivid background of their own unique sustained glory
it is clear to see that French football is no stranger to periods of prolonged dominance
As common as these phases of superiority may seem
no club has come close to matching Olympique Lyonnais’ historic period of success from around the turn of the new millennium when
the club crafted one of the most august and unlikely periods of domestic domination seen throughout all of European football history
Les Gones brought a fleeting end to the petty to-ing and fro-ing of control between the likes of Monaco
Lyon remained untouchable at the Ligue 1 summit. Though perhaps more fascinating than the era of supremacy itself
and the unparalleled successes owing to it
are the circumstances under which such dominance was conceived
Unlike most tales of countrywide dominion – which ostensibly owe their trophy hauls to unshakable stability; the unquestionable leadership of one supremely inspired manager and a squad as loyal as they are lavish – Lyon’s golden years of the noughties saw them do things a little differently
Guided by no fewer than four managers during their tremendous tenure at the top
and with the revolving door at the Stade de Gerland scarcely static for a moment
such was the sheer quantity of players arriving and departing throughout that time
Lyon had no right to dominate the French league as emphatically as they did
though no longer the toast of French football
and without a single title to claim in the ensuing years
still proudly holding onto a record that may never be broken
As the curtain fell on the 2000/01 Ligue 1 campaign
Lyon supporters the nation over sighed with an all too familiar exasperation
Their team had hounded rivals Nantes almost the entire season long but had typically fallen short of beating them to the title. The club had succeeded in adding a small taste of silverware to their season’s takings
but that particular prize remained scant consolation
Still a first French league trophy escaped them
Disappointed though they were with having to once again fill up on hors d’oeuvre while Nantes sat across the table tucking into what was their eighth main course
the Lyonnais were buoyed by one most obvious silver lining
The Brazilian forward had signed for Lyon in 1999, with the club jumping at the chance to add the then-Barcelona striker to their ranks when a disgruntled Louis van Gaal had slapped a modest price tag on the player and marched him to shop window himself
Anderson had made quite the impression upon his return to France
Anderson had finished the 1995/96 season as top scorer and claimed the league’s best player accolade the following year as he led his team to the French title
Anderson appeared to be up to his old tricks
notching 23 league goals before adding another 22 the year after
But still his goals came without the reward of a national title
In the lead up to his third campaign with Lyon
hoped to finally see an alternative ending to their all too familiar tale
playing alongside the mercurial talents of compatriot Juninho Pernambucano
the 2001/02 season would give them just that

As dawn broke on the final day of another long and arduous season
Lyon’s players were blessed to awake to a scenario in which their fragile fate rested perfectly in their own hands
Sat achingly close to the league summit in second place and with Lens ahead of them by virtue of just a single point
it was Lens who would travel to Lyon to contest the last game of the season
The consequences of each result were as clear as the hopeful squad could have wished for them to be: win and be crowned champions
draw or lose and the title belonged to Lens
The Lyonnais were made to wait just eight minutes before the celebrations could begin
An eruption of relief and ecstasy unbound the moment youngster Sidney Govou gifted his side the lead
before their voices shed their mistrusting and tentative edge as Philippe Violeau doubled their advantage seven minutes later
Jacek Bąk’s goal for Lens momentarily placed a finger on the lips of the raucous
hoping to pose a question the challengers would fail to answer
but Pierre Laigle’s third for Lyon put the result beyond doubt just moments into the second half and there remained little Lens could do to prevent the trophy from slipping from their grasp
No longer would their traditional white kits evoke sentiments of surrender
They had a French league title to show for their 52 years – and show it off they would
Little did they know just how many more would follow it
But before such delights could flow their way
like the hangover that plagues the morning after the night before
Lyon were quickly given reason to believe their bubble was about to burst so soon after having come to exist
was swiftly poached by the French Football Federation
Deemed to be the ideal candidate to marshall his country’s ambitious squad after a notoriously disappointing World Cup defence in 2002
Jacques Santini was snapped up and readied to serve his country
and suddenly proverbs attesting to the brightest flames burning for the shortest times seeped into the minds of the Lyonnais
They should have known it was too good to be true
Santini’s replacement at Lyon would prove to be no cheap imitation act
the studious Paul Le Guen wasted no time in evidencing his own aptitude for life at the top and not only matched his predecessor’s efforts but built on them in style
the 2002/03 campaign came to an end without Lyon requiring a dramatic final-day victory to secure the league title – an eventuality most fortunate considering the 4-1 defeat to Guingamp with which Lyon signed off
the loss mattered little and the youthful side named by Le Guen acknowledged that fact long before the occasion’s first ball had been kicked
require eight wins and two draws from the 10 games preceding their season’s curtain closer after a prolonged spot of incredibly suspect form saw them drifting aimlessly as low as fifth with 12 games left to play. Nonetheless
the tricky second title was theirs before Guingamp came to town and the shrill blast of the referee’s final whistle that afternoon served two purposes: to sound the closing of the league season and to declare the beginning of another summer-long party for the Lyonnais
The club’s title defence had proved far from routine
With as many as five clubs within just four points of their eventual haul
But Les Gones’ superiority was questioned insufficiently by their rivals
who exposed their own weaknesses with alarming regularity
and Lyon’s debut league trophy was consigned to a lonely cabinet no more
Over the coming seasons the league trophy would continue to embark upon its tour of the nation as standard
spending months flirting with potential suitors before ending the campaign in the increasingly familiar surroundings of the country’s central-eastern Metropolis of Lyon on every occasion
as the inevitability of another Lyonnais league win seemed to increase with each passing year so too did the turnover of Lyon’s most notable players
Read | How a dramatic Ligue 1 was won by six teams in as many seasons between 2008 and 2013
When Lyon kicked the first ball of their 2003/04 season they did so without the revered Sonny Anderson in their ranks as the Brazilian had since found a new home in Villarreal
Consequently Lyon were left to search for a new talismanic frontman and they soon found one in the form of French forward Péguy Luyindula
After enduring a heavily restricted role throughout his first two years with Lyon
having joined the club from Strasbourg on the eve of their first title-winning season
Luyindula declared he was ready to assume the starring role and be the man to lead Les Gones from the front
Luyindula’s confidence proved to have been conceived on solid foundations as the Zaire-born striker completed the campaign as his club’s top scorer
When compared to his Ligue 1 contemporaries
Luyindula’s numbers seemed frail; his 16 league goals dwarfed by Alexander Frei’s 20 for Rennes and moreso by Djibril Cissé’s 26 for Auxerre
But Lyon cared little for the intricacies of his figures as his efforts were bolstered admirably by contributions from the likes of Juninho
who typically hit double figures from midfield
who also hit 10 league goals in his debut season for Lyon. It was exactly this kind of collectivism and innate duty-sharing that helped Lyon to flourish and
keep at arm’s length the two chief rivals for their crown
Rejuvenated following a disastrous 11th-place finish the preceding season
Paris Saint-Germain hunted Lyon with renewed purpose
who embarked upon a memorable season that peaked with a first appearance in the Champions League final
appeared hellbent on knocking the Lyonnais off their perch
No team scored more or conceded fewer than Le Guen’s men and they were not to be caught at the top of Ligue 1
Confirmation of the club’s third straight league title was like sweet music to the ears of all at the club, particularly midfield dynamo Michael Essien whose decision to swap Bastia for Lyon had been vindicated in the most emphatic fashion
The same could also be said for ex-Guingamp winger Florent Malouda
who too had upgraded in the summer and hopped aboard the express train that was Olympique Lyon holding a one-way ticket to the top of the league
The following season the influence of domestically-acquired players such as Essien and Malouda would increase further still and
far from providing the chasing pack with reason for optimism
the narrow fissure between Lyon and their wannabe successors at the top would become a vast chasm
As had become the standard in pre-season preparations
Lyon readied themselves for another title defence by selling a small handful of key players
Their efforts were not going unnoticed across the continent
and while many of Lyon’s recruits were content to stick with the club while the going was good
others recognised what they had achieved with Les Gones and sought out further challenges elsewhere
long-term Lyon owner Jean-Michel Aulas did nothing to hide the fact the football club was still very much a business looking to turn a profit
given the club’s ascent from the second division to the very top of their country’s pile
few on the inside thought to question his methods
in addition to a number of less extravagant transfers
Élber departed for Borussia Mönchengladbach
Luyindula swapped Lyon for Marseille and Edmílson joined Barcelona
Despite the renown of the players departing
these sales brought about relatively little cause for concern as Lyon responded in typical fashion
With their trusted scouting network focusing their attentions on two distinct regions, one at home and one abroad, Lyon recruited wisely. The team’s defence was reinforced with the additions of Éric Abidal and Cris
from Ligue 1 rivals Lille and Brazilians Cruzeiro
while their attacking armoury grew in size with the acquisitions of Frenchman Sylvain Wiltord
This particular period of personnel revision was also noted for its promotion of two Lyon youth players
who graduated from the club’s academy and made their debuts in the coming season
These two players were Hatem Ben Arfa and Karim Benzema

The campaign that followed played out in familiar fashion
and scored more while conceding less than their every rival
as it now seemed commonplace for them to do
Only instead of becoming the merry victors of a two or three-horse race
it appeared as though Le Guen’s team were in fact the only horse racing at all
with a leisurely-attained 12-point gap to show for their efforts
Ligue 1 took on the appearance of an unlikely racecourse playing hosts to a single stallion and 19 ill-equipped and lost-looking asses
In the weeks predating the season that followed
once again the Stade de Gerland was awash with new faces come the precursory roll-call
Enamoured by his phenomenal performances for Lyon
Chelsea had willingly parted with some £34 million to procure the services of Michael Essien and the club wasted no time reinvesting that money to sign Portuguese midfielder Tiago as his immediate replacement
Lyon also brought on board further midfield options in the form of Marseille’s Benoît Pedretti
while John Carew also joined Les Gones’ cause
was that of the man settling into the swivel chair in the manager’s office
Despite rival fans’ hopes of a closer title race
the next season did little to convince watchers of French football it was anything other than a formality
The only event of note at the top of Ligue 1 seemed to be that the solitary stallion had become even faster
and the gap come the close of the campaign had swelled from 12 points to 15
consecutive league title number five was the most elementary to date
while Jean-Michel Aulas was delighted to see the domestic run continue
it was Houllier’s performances in the Champions League by which he would ultimately be judged
From the outset of Santini’s success and beyond
Lyon experienced a series of wildly varying fortunes on the continent
ranging from the euphoric – building upon their extraordinary successes at home to topple European giants considered even more imposing than themselves – to the downright maddening
as they failed year on year to translate their domestic dominance into success in the Champions League for more than a single game at a time
Repeated tussles with the venerated likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid made for thrilling and memorable wins on occasion
But these instances were simply the snapshots of choice pulled from a dark-room filled with images of mediocrity
Houllier found that he too was destined to craft his own fate in the very same image
Running away with their league with such ease yet again
many believed 2005 could well be the year Lyon shook off their continental hoodoo and made their mark on the Champions League
sending them careering into the very same hurdle for the third excruciating year in a row
Read | Where does Karim Benzema, adored and loathed, respected and dismissed, rank amongst the greats
Lyon were so often viewed only by craned necks and through squinted eyes as they operated on an entirely different plane to their domestic rivals
But in Europe their flaws could be viewed all too clearly. Houllier
given the benefit of the doubt by the all-powerful Aulas
was graciously afforded one more crack at the big time the following year
As the 2005/06 Ligue 1 season was consigned to the past by the next in line
the same old storyline found itself rehashed for 2007 with minimal alterations made only to expendable cast members
Lyon’s fortunes in the league bordered on becoming a foregone conclusion
Their closest challengers in 2005 were left 12 points off the pace
in 2006 the concluding gap increased to 15 and
plucky silver-medalists Marseille ended their season’s endeavours 17 points behind the runaway leaders
Never before had the gulf in class been quite so apparent
Further evidencing the familiarity of the latest campaign to those gone by
Lyon chose not to defy the sanctity of their tradition and suddenly saunter to the title while relying on the formidable firepower of one particularly adept frontman
and neither did they opt to change tact in their policy on transfers and seek to hold what they had
Like principled children with an abundance of sweets
again the squad shared their goalscoring duties generously between them knowing there was plenty to go around
Fred set the bar with 11 league goals while Juninho and Malouda trailed close behind with 10 apiece
players came and players went all the while slowing the Lyon juggernaut not one iota
earning his club more than £20m in the process
and was joined in the departures lounge by no fewer than 10 players
Alou Diarra and Sébastien Squillaci were all picked up from fellow Ligue 1 sides
showing the club’s policy of poaching domestic talent was still well and truly alive
it was upon their progress in Europe’s showpiece competition that so much hinged for Lyon
Lyon substantiated the hopes of the optimists among the Lyonnais and palliated the fears of the pessimists by topping their group with a return of four wins and two draws from their six fixtures
Les Gones were rewarded with a first knockout round date with Serie A runners-up Roma while their group stage rivals Real
having been made to settle for second by Lyon
were forced to take on the might of German champions Bayern Munich
undoubtedly brought a cool relief to those of a Lyon persuasion as it underlined the importance of their own positive results against Real to ensure their own first place finish and the consequent easier draw. However
in fitting with the type of diminished luck the Lyonnais were used to relying upon while watching their team play across Europe
their ‘easier’ tie proved to be anything but
In Rome the two teams played out a predictably cautious first leg stalemate and Lyon took back with them to the Stade de Gerland a clean slate upon which to formulate their master plan for reaching the final stages of the competition
would begin with beating Roma and it soon proved to be a plan that worked far more succinctly in theory than in practice
On 22 minutes, Francesco Totti struck to give Roma the lead and with it an away goal that Lyon were now
stranded in the second leg without one of their own
Mancini doubled the lead and Lyon’s hopes of an historic Champions League run lay in tatters
Lyon could do nothing to breach the Roman defence and the game ended 2-0 to the Italians

Suddenly the coarse edges of the memories of their team’s quarter-final failings softened and the repetition seemed that little less infuriating
They’d not even made it that far this time around
aware that perhaps they should be more careful with what they wish for
though they knew there would almost certainly be another chance the following season
the club’s president elected ex-Marseille and Sochaux boss Alain Perrin to take the wheel. Unmoved in his ambitions for the club
Aulas still wanted nothing more than to crack the continent
equally unmoved in both their domestic and European pedigree
despite further dominance across their home nation
it wasn’t to be in the Champions League where Perrin and Lyon would find success
Perrin’s relative inexperience and subpar start to his Lyon career led many to believe he’d be the shortest of all Aulas’ managerial acquisitions
But Perrin shook off the looming suspicions
and gave a dignifying account of himself and his credentials during his debut campaign with Les Gones
Le Guen and Houllier had each left behind mighty shoes to fill and Perrin had filled them nobly
Not only had he successfully navigated Ligue 1’s choppy waters
through unknown territory to guide Lyon to another consecutive title
but he had also masterminded the club’s success in the Coupe de France
ensuring their first ever league and cup double
Lyon again failed to charm their way to the latter stages and encountered a familiar glass ceiling in the first knockout round where Manchester United denied their progression
Beyond the tiresome and seemingly inevitable routine of winning at home while losing abroad
the season was responsible for proposing a contradicting set of clues as to what exactly Lyon’s future may hold
On one hand there was great cause for celebration
and had added a first domestic double to the decade’s haul
with 20-year old academy graduate Karim Benzema leading from the front
firing 31 goals in all competitions during the season
it seemed the Lyonnais would be crazy in fearing for their club’s fortunes
signs that perhaps Lyon’s era of dominance was coming to an end had become increasingly prevalent
Lyon were bested seven times in the league
more than they had lost in any of the previous four years
and ultimately won the title by just four points
A substantial enough lead though it was to provide another trophy
seemingly gone were the days of 17-point polarities between Lyon and their despairing adversaries
was that Perrin’s first season with Lyon would also be his last
Evidently his championship win had proved far less emphatic than many of those that preceded him but he had also made history in securing two trophies for his season’s work; a feat that not one of his predecessors could match
Perrin had found Europe’s peak far too steep a climb to master and Aulas was unwilling to waste any more time
effort or investment in helping him reequip for another attempted ascent
came the turn of Claude Puel to take charge of the Lyon cause
no such alterations were made to an unequivocal job specification
a great many factors outside of their control had changed
not least of all the makeup of the league in which they were competing and the strength of the squad they entrusted to top it
Read | What happened to Yoann Gourcuff, the next Zidane
Lyon would not only compete against their familiar domestic opponents
they would also be forced to combat the dreaded seven-year itch which would prove to be one contest they couldn’t win
Lyon continued to abide by their own blueprint in the transfer market
opting not to hesitate in selling a number of their most established players for exorbitant fees so long as they could be succeeded with domestically sourced replacements
Malouda joined Chelsea, Abidal left for Barcelona, Tiago swapped Lyon for Juventus, and Alou Diarra made the move across country to Bordeaux. They were quickly replaced like-for-like where possible, as Abdul Kader Keita, Fabio Grosso and Mathieu Bodmer stepped into their now vacant positions
but the new recruits failed to do so adequately
Lyon’s defence denied any and all suggestions that a changing of the guard was due in Ligue 1
bettered only by the miserly defence of Toulouse who allowed just two fewer
it was at the business end of the pitch that Les Gones struggled
Hitting 52 goals for the season may have seen them outscore all but two of their rivals yet the tally was their lowest for nine years and the lack of firepower killed their hopes of a high-flying eighth straight title before they could ever leave the ground
Aulas could perhaps have forgiven his troops and pardoned their streak-ending malaise had their concentration slipped at home all the while they conducted a compelling European adventure elsewhere
But Lyon cursed the draw that handed them an invitation to Barcelona as early as the Champions League’s first knockout round and the 6-3 aggregate trouncing which immediately followed meant that there was to be no redeeming their domestic failings on foreign soil
it was not entirely inconceivable to imagine a burgeoning generation of football-besotted children scattered across school playgrounds for whom the very prospect of seeing Lyon without the Ligue 1 trophy held firmly in their clutches was far too alien a thought to even comprehend
Yet that was the dim reality the club faced in the summer of 2009 as they were forced to watch on helplessly as the Ligue 1 trophy was carried off by one of their rivals
showing not a moment’s courtesy for the time it had spent at the Stade de Gerland
they would come to know that particular scenario intimately in the years that followed
Should a philosophical tour d’horizon of their demise be required
Lyon’s eventual fall from grace perhaps seeks to comment on the importance of taking sufficient pride from your victories and highlights the pitfalls of taking them for granted while aiming too high
had Aulas treasured Lyon’s domination of France more dearly and not sought to so eagerly chase his dream of conquering Europe
his team may well have retained their position as the toast of their nation
it must be acknowledged that without Aulas’ immense ambitions
sizeable wealth and obvious aptitude for his position as president
Lyon could very well still be treading water in France’s second tier
with not a single honour to present let alone the finest championship streak their country has ever witnessed
Olympique Lyonnais are far from some toppled giant still reeling from a dramatic and near-fatal collapse
It may have been almost a decade since their last league title but the club have repeatedly collected runners-up medals in subsequent seasons
not once finishing in a position lower than fifth
and still have about them more reasons than most to be hopeful of a prosperous future
and with it the breed of rival Lyon must defeat in order to reclaim their crown
has mutated in such a way since their last championship win that it seems almost inevitable that Lyon will never replicate their famous streak. But then all streaks begin with just one and
should Lyon get their wish and top the table come May once again
there’s no telling where it could lead them
We all know what happened the first time they won just one

After going four goals down by half-time in the 2019 final and three down in 2022
this time the Catalans dug deep to hold it together at the back
Barca threatened increasingly at the other end
who scored twice in last year's final against Wolfsburg
broke in for their first big chance after half an hour
Christiane Endler saved and Selma Bacha cleared the ball off the line after it rebounded back towards goal
gave left-back Bacha a torrid time and had 11-time finalist Renard backpedalling fearfully near the end of the first half
Barcelona made their quality count after the hour mark when Bonmati sent them ahead
The Ballon d'Or winner had been quiet but arrived to collect Caldentey's clever pass and burst into the area
Bonmati's low shot deflected off Vanessa Gilles and flew over the helpless Endler
Champions League top goalscorer Kadidiatou Diani curled agonisingly over for Lyon as Bompastor's side tried to fight back
Hegerberg headed off target as Lyon's chances ebbed away
"We have to recognise Barcelona had a great match and deserved to win even though it's hard to accept it," said Bompastor
although she stayed tight-lipped on her future
put on the captain's armband and settled the game by rifling into the top corner to get Barcelona's celebrations started early
what we have achieved," said Putellas after her goal locked in Barcelona's quadruple
Bronze who won the competition for the fifth time -- including three times with Lyon -- praised Putellas
she's the 'queen' of Barcelona for a reason," said Bronze
"She's got the quality to do that in the last minute of the Champions League final when we were up against it at the end and just sealed the win for us."
For this year’s Electric Vehicle Symposium 32
the Dutch delegation will be arriving in an EV caravan
driving all the way to Lyon from Amsterdam by electric car
in order to be there on time for the start of the symposium on the 20th
the Netherlands will be well represented with a Holland Pavilion under the motto ‘Mission Zero’
Part of this plan was to encourage as many companies and governments of the Dutch delegation as possible to travel to Lyon by electric car (as a driver or co-driver)
the caravan organisers aim to spread the message: “We not only travel as emissions-free as possible
but we also show EVS32 that the Netherlands is serious about electric driving.”
The electric caravan journey to the Electric Vehicle Symposium 32 will take place from the 18 – 19 May
the 18th of May at 09:00 from the Amsterdam ArenA
and plans to arrive in Lyon on Sunday 19 May by the end of the afternoon
the crew from Holland plans to briefly visit the orange Holland Pavilion
where the Dutch delegation will be officially received by Prince Albert of Monaco the next morning
Alderman for Traffic and Transport of Amsterdam
has already confirmed attendance for the entire trip
A camera crew will also join the caravan in order to record the journey
The municipality of Amsterdam is additionally offering participating companies the opportunity to make their own pitch film with the camera team to be distributed during the EVS32
Interested journalists and bloggers were also invited to join
The electric car caravan allowed participants to register as a driver (with electric car) or as a passenger
but the deadline for public participation passed on the 2nd of May
While the caravan is ideally welcoming all participants
the organizers did add that they did not want emissions-producing hybrids in the lineup and that there is limited space for cars with a range under 250km due to limited charging stations along the route

Juninho will work alongside former Brazil assistant Sylvinho at the French side
with the latter succeeding Bruno Genesio as head coach
Lyon legend Juninho Pernambucano will return to the Ligue 1 club in the capacity of sporting director
confirmed OL president Jean-Michel Aulas on Saturday
Juninho spent eight years at Lyon from 2001 to 2009
a stint that included a record run of seven straight league titles
He became famous for his prodigious ability from dead-ball situations in particular
and reached 100 goals in 350 games before leaving for his native Brazil and Vasco da Gama
The former playmaker finally called time on his trophy-laden career in 2013
but he is now ready to re-enter football in familiar surroundings
"We saw Juni two times at Los Angeles to obtain his agreement and we have it," Aulas told reporters following Lyon's final Ligue 1 game of the season
even though there are some financial details remaining
Aulas went on to reveal that Juninho's countryman Sylvinho
will take over from Bruno Genesio as Lyon's coach
Sylvinho starred at left-back for Corinthians
but this will be his first appointment as head coach following several spells as assistant
Brazil's technical director Edu had already hinted at Sylvinho's next move when he spoke out on Friday following the news that the assistant had quit the national team just one month ahead of the Copa America
"This announcement is a mix of feelings
Sylvinho will not be part of the Copa America
He accepted the proposal of a great European club," he said
"I want to leave a personal message to a friend of so many years: that you are happy
I told the president and he also feels the same
