It was February 2008 when Manchester United last visited Lyon, facing off in the Champions League round of 16 at Stade Gerland
as they now play out of Parc Olympique Lyonnais (Groupama Stadium)
But a lot has also changed for United, as the side which was on its way to becoming the kings of Europe. The United side of the 2007/08 season was incredible
winning both the Premier League and Champions League
It was a squad stacked with world-class talent, as Gary Neville claimed eight of the United team could start for any side in the world and at the time
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side drew with Lyon in the first leg away from home as substitute Carlos Tevez bagged a late equaliser. This, before Cristiano Ronaldo scored the sole goal in the second leg at Old Trafford
Looking back at the team United had to face Lyon
we can only remember fondly how much talent the club had at its disposal
completely different to the team that Ruben Amorim will bring to Lyon this week in the Europa League quarter-final
Here is how United lined up against Lyon back in 2008
the last time the two clubs faced off in France
In goal, Edwin van der Sar made Wayne Rooney’s ultimate United XI
and he was in the net on the last visit to Lyon
a massive upgrade on current number one Andre Onana
At right back, Wes Brown was the regular starter at this point
as Neville spent much of the campaign on the injury list
United’s past trip to Lyon saw a formidable backline led by Rio Ferdinand
who started the game as a central defender
Ferdinand’s partner was the rock-solid Serbian Nemanja Vidic
This centre-back pairing struck fear into defenders
Karim Benzema had the impossible task of battling these two
Completing the back four was ever-present Frenchman Patrice Evra
Moving into the midfield, United had Owen Hargreaves as the deep-lying player
and he would be in Amorim’s team right now if he had started
Also in the midfield Sir Alex took to Lyon was Paul Scholes. The legendary No.8 is seen as the club’s best-ever player by many, including Van der Sar, who named Scholes as the greatest of all time
Completing the midfield was Brazilian wonderkid at the time
who is a rare member of this squad who might not be a star for Amorim’s 2025 side
Getting into the front three is where the team become truly generational for United with Cristiano Ronaldo starting in Lyon. Ronaldo was the star of the record-breaking front three of the 2007/08 season
On the other side from Ronaldo was Ryan Giggs
who was in the twilight of his career yet still producing class for United
Starting as the striker for United the last time the team went to Lyon was record goal scorer Wayne Rooney
who would be revolutionary for Amorim’s current side
This team is sensational and highlights the major difference in the quality of players United currently have
If United are to head to the top of the sport again
it will take a lot of work from Ineos to build a squad like the one which Sir Alex had
the current Lyon side is also a shell of the side which Sir Alex took on in 2008
we expect a positive return to France this Thursday
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a hit-and-run on KY 274 over the weekend
Sheriff Brent White says Deputy Michelle Kent responded to a two-vehicle hit-and-run collision on KY 274 near Cannon Road shortly after 7:00 Saturday night
the investigation revealed an unidentified northbound truck failed to stay in its lane and sideswipted a pickup truck driven by 68-year old James Childress of Eddyville
He says Childress received minor injuries and was checked out at the scene by Lyon County EMS
but declined to be transported to a hospital
Sheriff White says the unidentified truck had large mirrors
If anyone has information about the hit-and-run collision

The Coupe de France finalists were very different clubs when they last met in a Coupe de France Final
It’s 16 years since the last time Olympique Lyonnais and Paris St Germain met in the Coup de France final
The finalists that day were both dramatically different clubs to the ones that will lock horns on Saturday 24th May
The showdown marked the end of an era for both sides
with each club set to head off in distinctly opposing directions
Both finalists had enjoyed relatively comfortable journeys to the Stade de France
with Lyon only conceding once and PSG twice
It was Les Parisiens’ tenth appearance in the final
and it offered the prize of a cup double after lifting the Coupe de Ligue two months earlier
the season had been a struggle for the capital club
safety was only secured on the last day with a dramatic 2-1 win over Sochaux
After enjoying a golden era in the 1990s under Luis Fernandez
Paul Le Guen’s PSG had tumbled into serious decline
Disastrous mismanagement on and off the field culminated in crippling financial losses and the exit of powerful investors
the club found solace in the domestic cups
winning the Coupe de France in 2004 and 2006
The 2007-08 edition presented an opportunity to finish a dreadful season on a high
Lyon’s fortunes couldn’t have been more contrasting
After securing their first Ligue 1 title in 2002
the club went on to enjoy a record-breaking seven successive league championships
Les Gones had at its disposal an astonishing conveyor belt of talent
Hatem Ben Arfa and Karim Benzema were just a few of the stars to emerge from Lyon’s renowned academy
Allied with this seemingly bottomless pool of talent was Aulas’ masterful savviness in the transfer market
Allain Perrin’s 2007-08 version had been rejuvenated by the canny acquisitions of Miralem Pjanic
absorbing the lucrative departures of Malouda
Abidal and Tiago Mendes the previous summer
Crowned league champions just a week before the cup final
the face-off with PSG presented the opportunity of a first-ever domestic double
there was little doubt who the favourites were as the sides contested the 91st final of the Coupe de France
it was the underdogs who dominated the majority of the game
as a strangely disjointed Lyon struggled to pose a significant threat to Jérôme Alonzo’s goal
Lyon’s electric front three of Sidney Govou
Fred and 20-year-old Benzema – top scorer in Ligue 1 with 20 goals and with six goals in six games in the cup – found little change out of PSG’s experienced stoppers Mario Yepes and Zoumana Camara
Even Lyon’s captain and playmaker Juninho was unable to impose himself on the game
Jérémy Clément and Clément Chantôme harried and hustled the champions
it was Les Rouge–et–Bleu who came closest to breaking the deadlock
first with a left-foot volley cleared off the line and then by the feet of keeper Grégory Coupet when through on goal
It became clear that it wouldn’t be Les Parisiens’ day when
Jérôme Rothen’s freekick was met by Camara
whose goal-bound effort was clearly blocked by the arm of Alain Boumsong
Yepes followed up with a header that crashed against the bar from point-blank range
before Camara saw his effort from the rebound spectacularly parried away by Coupet
and it was inevitable when the league champions scored the game’s decisive goal
As the first half of extra time drew to a close
Benzema’s inswinging cross from the left was chested down by Keïta on the edge of the PSG box
The ball bounced into the path of Govou who rammed it home past Alonzo
As Govou disappeared under a heap of bodies
Les Gones celebrated their first Coupe de France victory in 35 years and the end of a glorious season
it would prove to be a watershed moment for the champions
their winning streak came to an end as Laurent Blanc’s Bordeaux lifted the league title
OL would fail to win another title and that wait continues today
the pain of the cup defeat soon subsided when
the Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) group acquired its transformational stake in the club
the tables have turned to such an extent that Lyon will face a challenge on Friday every bit as daunting as the one PSG took on 16 years ago
GFFN | John Porter
THE World Cup show at Lyon in France saw plenty of equestrian action over the weekend
alongside show jumping classes for both horses and ponies
The FEI Jumping Ponies’ Trophy 1.25m speed class on Friday saw Sligo’s Senan Reape take eighth place with the 14-year-old gelding Fernando
when they jumped clear in a time of 59.76 seconds
There were 30 starters in the one-round class
The class was won by Denmark’s Palma Sophie Gry Jansson-Christensen on Parc Icon (54.26)
Saturday’s 1.35m pony Grand Prix saw Reape claim fourth place
Nine of the 30 starters jumped clear first time out
but only three managed to repeat that in the second round
Reape rode a very fast jump-off round in 35 seconds
which made them the fastest of the four-faulters
The win went to Lieselot Kooremans (NED) on Elando van de Roshoeve (35.63)
The five-star 1.50m class on Saturday saw Mark McAuley on the nine-year-old Fury Nocturne take fourth place
McAuley was among just six out of a start list of 38 to jump clear
The class was won by France’s Harold Boisset on T’Obetty du Domaine
whose super-fast time of 61.77 was not going to be caught
The closest challenger was Norway’s Pal Flam on Mega Special DC

playAmorim 'really confident' in Onana after errors vs
Lyon (1:08)Ruben Amorim defends André Onana after Manchester United's 2-2 draw with Lyon in the Europa League
Ruben Amorim has said he won't throw away games in the Premier League to aid Manchester United's bid to win the Europa League ahead of their tough trip to Newcastle United on Sunday
United have got just three days to prepare for the game at St James' Park following the 2-2 draw with Lyon on Thursday
Amorim has admitted he will have to be "careful" with his players' fitness
but insists he won't sacrifice the chance to climb up the table with too much rotation despite facing a crucial second leg against Lyon next week
"Sometimes winning games is the best way of preparing for the next one," Amorim said
I am going to be careful with some players but again we need to be competitive
When you are playing for Manchester United you cannot go to the game thinking about the next one
"So we are going to face this one and then we have three days
we are going to prepare for the next one without a lot of running and a lot of training
"It's just recovering and then we will be fine on Thursday [for the second leg against Lyon] with our fans
But we need to face Newcastle in a way that we can win."
Ruben Amorim still believes Manchester United can advance up the Premier League table. Cesar Ortiz/Soccrates/Getty ImagesWhile United are languishing in 13th place in the table
Newcastle are battling for spot in the Champions League
Eddie Howe's side have won four of their last five league games to sit fifth -- the last Champions League place after it was confirmed that the top five will all play in the competition next season
Newcastle won comfortably at Old Trafford in December and Amorim is wary of the threat they will pose on Sunday
the physicality and the way they are running when they are beaten in the first pressure," the United boss said
"They have played together for a while and they won a title that was really emotional for everybody
"We are being more consistent in the way we play the games and we will try to do the same on Sunday."
Meanwhile, Joshua Zirkzee has defended André Onana after the goalkeeper's two errors cost United victory against Lyon
Amorim said afterwards that he remains "really confident" in Onana and Zirkzee backed up his manager by insisting it would be "ridiculous" to single out the Cameroon international for blame
"We're not going to take someone out for making mistakes

Starting the spring with two losses would hurt the confidence of many soccer teams
a veteran unit that will likely have a say in who wins the Oakland Activities Association-White championship in a few weeks
0-1-0) conceded just three goals in losses to Bloomfield Hills and Clarkston to open the season
Those are two respectable results considering who those opponents were

That's why Groves' players weren't hanging their heads entering Friday's 8-0 win over South Lyon in non-conference play
They know they didn't embarrass themselves in their first two matches
They used them as a barometer to see just where they're at throughout the opening month
"I love playing good teams like that," said senior Mikayla Benavides
one of Groves' three returning All-White selections in 2023
"It's so good to prepare early in the season and to get out all of those kinks
It's rewarding in games like this because we've had so many wrinkles to get out this past week."
Not only were the Falcons opening the season with three games in their first week back from spring break but they're also learning to play under a new coaching staff

Former coach Greg Decourval stepped down following last year's 9-10-2 season

Replacing him in the off-season was Reed Losee

The girls have needed time to adjust to the new coaching staff

Having a busy schedule packed with state powerhouses from the get-go will help the Falcons prepare to tackle that task
"It was good (facing Bloomfield Hills and Clarkston in Week 1) because we didn't have time to get into it," Losee said
That was the biggest message: Are we going to compete
Are we going to keep battling whatever the situation is

This group has been together for a while — led by some of the best goal-scorers in the league in Benavides
Pepper and midfielder Cabrey O'Gorman are Groves' other two returning all-league players
"This is a great group of girls," said Benavides
who ignited the mercy rule against South Lyon by smashing in a penalty kick with 5:33 left in regulation
We've been together for the last 4 years so it's not like this is a new team
So I'm definitely confident we can do great things this season
Other scorers against the Lions included Pepper
while returning defender Delphine McLaughlin booted in two goals
who backed up former standout Kirsten Jasinski a year ago
stepped into the starting lineup and faced the bulk of shots South Lyon sent toward the net
while Fanny Aixa also made an appearance in the goal

Hinton in the IGHSAU 2A basketball title game23 PHOTOSCentral Lyon's Georgie Oedekoven (22) knocks the ball from Hinton's Sydney Doeschot during the 4A IGHSAU state basketball championship at Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday
During their recent 4-1 home win over Troyes
Lyon’s fans unfurled a banner protesting the use of green boots
due to the colour being that of bitter rivals
with green being the colour of rivals AS Saint-Etienne
Fans displayed a banner protesting the use of the boots
with a pair of green X Speedportal boots within a red circle
crossed out and accompanied by the message “Respectez Nos Traditions” (Respect our traditions)
Five of the players that started the game for Lyon wear the X Speedportal
It’s a high number of players from one team
and it’s just unfortunate that the colour is that of St-Etienne
This feeling of unrest comes despite the fact that St-Etienne are currently competing in Ligue 2
and that they received an absolute spanking at the hands of Le Havre on the weekend
Last week Lyon shared training images that showed the likes of Malo Gusto and Rayan Cherki with the boots
with several fans expressing their disapproval on social media at that point
Former striker Sidney Govou also reacted to the issue and pointed out that he had worn green boots for one match and three training sessions before former manager and Lyon legend Bernard Lacombe told him to throw them away
But this is hardly the first time that a team has worn boots that are the colour of a rival
Borussia Dortmund players were called out by fans for wearing blue boots
with it being the colour of rivals Schalke
while Schalke players were in turn criticised for wearing yellow boots – BVB’s primary colour
and aside from players occasionally highlighting their discontent with a colourway due to its links with an opposing team
it doesn’t seem to be all that much of an issue for most fans
An easy solution with Lyon would be for players to switch out into the blacked out Shadowportal colourway
an option that is more commonly taken up by grassroots and lower leagues
although it's unlikely adidas would be willing to see a host of their premium players not wearing the current on-pitch colourway
With the ever increasing range of colours on offer
there will inevitably be issues if fans want to find them
but this incident perhaps was more of an issue due to the overwhelming number of players wearing the launch look of the X Speedportal
give it a beat and they’ll all be switching into the next colourway
with looks often only lasting for a few months
it’s an issue that the fans will have with the brands
as the players are contracted to them and as a result pretty much have to wear what they’re told to

Report: Barcelona Targeted Benzema At LyonFormer Lyon striker Karim Benzema was a Barcelona transfer target in 2008 before joining Real Madrid, according to reportsGOAL
Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema was a primary transfer target for Barcelona while at Lyon back in 2008, according to Marca
Former Blaugrana boss Pep Guardiola had lost faith in Samuel Etoo at the time and was hoping to bring in the Frenchman to replace him
The move eventually broke down because Barca's ex-technical secretary Txiki Begisristain was left unimpressed with Benzema's demeanour after holding talks with the player in Lyon
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana appears to have managed to get under the skin of Lyon's players with his recent comments

India was bowled out for 163 in the second innings right on stumps after Lyon's incredible eight-wicket haul
The host set Australia 76 runs to earn a rare test win in India after losing the first two tests of the series
Cheteshwar Pujara’s fighting 59 gave India some hope
but it was mainly 61 overs of grim cricket for the hosts
Virat Kohli was also out lbw on while trying to cut Matthew Kuhnemann off the back foot
India was 78-4 and still trailing Australia by nine runs
Pujara used his footwork to deny the spinners and resisted
Pujara and Shreyas Iyer gave India momentum

Being an Australian finger-spinner is not easy
whose seam gets embedded into the ball early in the innings
It is not a coincidence that Lyon is the only Australian finger-spinner with 150 Test wickets
who bowled left-arm finger-spin with the Dukes in England

To chase 600 wickets despite these odds is indeed remarkable

Lyon does not get the new ball in the four overs before lunch on day two – this is only the third innings – but replaces Starc immediately afterwards

The slog is almost certainly predetermined
not only from Cheteshwar Pujara but also from Rohit Sharma

The ball drifts into the left-handed Jadeja – who plays outside – and holds its line to hit him on the front pad
claims the review and gets the decision in his favour
but Pujara and Shreyas Iyer score 31 in three overs once play resumes
The stage is now set for Lyon to run through even if Pujara stands tall
pitched on off stump from round the wicket
but Lyon returns to take out Ashwin with the first ball of his new spell
but this one pitches on off and is set to hit leg
only Smith (577 off Stuart Broad) has scored more runs off one bowler than Pujara off Lyon (571)
and only Herbert Sutcliffe (1,748 off Clarrie Grimmett) has faced more balls than Pujara’s 1,296 against Lyon
It has been one of cricket’s longest-running duels
but for the first time Pujara hits a six off Lyon – over mid-wicket
It is evident that he is trying to hit India out this quagmire despite Axar’s solidity at the other end
Pujara middles his leg-glance but cannot keep it down – or clear of Smith
Umesh Yadav gets a first-ball LBW decision overturned
And Mohammed Siraj’s dismissal is a near-encore of Gill’s
Lyon finishes with 8-64 to become the second spinner
to take two eight-wicket hauls in Test matches in the same overseas nation
and only Bob Massie in England and Angus Fraser in the West Indies make it in the last hundred years
And unlike that 8-50 in Bengaluru from six years ago

Lyon
France’s largest urban park and a historic flea market are among the amazing things to do in Lyon
If you’ve until now overlooked Lyon, you’ve been doing yourself a disservice. Lyon has been having its moment for a while now (we named it one of the world’s best cities for food earlier this year)
but we’ll let you in on a little secret: it’s only getting better.
Always thought Paris was the birthplace of cinema? That’s Lyon, actually (you can find some of its best stuff at Lyon’s annual Festival Lumière). Plus there’s street art on every corner, some of France’s best restaurants

and sip white wine with their fellow sellers. Take cash and go early: the market’s open on Thursdays and Saturdays between 7am and 1pm
There’s also a showcase of vintage cars every first Saturday of the month

squares and facades of buildings are transformed by installations created by local and international lighting designers

And we’d struggle to argue with that
this 6,000-square-metre park is an uphill climb
Designed at the turn of the last millennium at the request of the city of Montreal (with which Lyon is twinned)
this garden of curiosities offers a simply breathtaking view

Nathan Lyon led the way with the ball for Australia picking up a magnificent 8-64
setting Australia a target of 76 to seal a famous win
Cheteshwar Pujara led the way with a masterclass on a spinning pitch
scoring 59 and dragging India along with him even as he kept losing partners at the other end
His defiance was ended by a moment of brilliance from Steve Smith
topping off a great day out for him as a captain
Smith did not allow the game to drift away and kept making changes to his bowling attack to not allow the batters to get on top
who had counterattacked with a 27-ball 26 against the spinners
with Usman Khawaja taking a sharp chance at midwicket
This stemmed any momentum that India had a little into the third session
before the lower order capitulated on a raging turner
with the innings ending eerily similar to how it started with Mohammad Siraj swinging wildly against Lyon to be bowled
It had started in similar fashion with Lyon getting past a wildly swinging Shubman Gill in the first over after the Lunch break
While Rohit Sharma kept Pujara company for 58 balls
he too copped one that shot through a tad low from Lyon and was out LBW
with DRS too going against his wishful call
Virat Kohli had a nervy stay in the middle getting past a few close shaves
but on 13 after he had slapped a short ball from Matthew Kuhnemann to the cover boundary
he tried to pull one and was trapped LBW again
when Lyon ended Ravindra Jadeja's dogged 36-ball stay getting him out LBW with the aid of a review
Pujara managed to be more confident with his footwork drilling a couple of drives to keep the scoreboard ticking along and shaving off the deficit
and briefly along with Iyer India threatened to take a significant lead
with the No.3 registering his 35th Test fifty in the process
However it all came to a rapid halt thanks to some relentlessly accurate spin bowling from Australia
despite a collapse that saw Australia lose their last six wickets for 11 runs
the visitors finished with a possibly pivotal lead of 88 runs
Cameron Green and Peter Handscomb made it Australia's first hour seeing it out without much problem
India opted to start with their two left-arm spinners after a brief spell from Mohammed Siraj in that hour and it did not yield the desired results
Both Handscomb and Green used their long reach to smother the spin and defend confidently
and ground the attack out while adding 30 invaluable runs through that hour
things took a drastic turn after R Ashwin and Umesh Yadav started operating in tandem in the second hour
Ashwin was the first to get the breakthrough having Handscomb caught at short leg and breaking a stoic partnership worth 40 in 134 balls
In the next over Umesh hit Green on the backfoot and had an LBW decision upheld by the barest of margins as the batter reviewed
This was followed by a demolition job of the tail with Umesh sending the stumps flying to send back Todd Murphy and Mitchell Starc
while Ashwin cleaned up Lyon who missed a big sweep
The collapse saw Australia lose six wickets in less than half an hour
giving India a slight opening but Lyon and Co
Brief Scores: India 109 (Virat Kohli 22; Matthew Kuhnemann 5-16
Nathan Lyon 3-35) and 163 all out (Cheteshwar Pujara 59; Nathan Lyon 8-64) lead Australia 197 (Usman Khawaja 60
Marnus Labuschagne 31; Ravindra Jadeja 4-63
