Chinese manufacturer Das Solar says it will open its first European PV panel assembly plant in Mandeure
From pv magazine France
Chinese solar module manufacturer DAS Solar plans to build a 3 GW solar module assembly factory in Mandeure
a commune in Doubs department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of eastern France
“Work on the new manufacturing facility is progressing rapidly,” Frédéric Barbier
noting that it will require an initial investment of €109 million ($124.1 million)
Das Solar purchased a production site from the French government on Nov
The site had been abandoned since French automotive company Faurecia vacated it in 2020
and the main building – set to house PV module assembly lines – has since been cleaned
“We are therefore meeting our deadlines for the three planned 1 GW lines,” said Barbier
“We plan to commission the first two by the end of 2025 and the third by 2026.”
The modules will be based on n-type tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) technology
already in use at the group’s Asian facilities
Das Solar will import PV cells produced in China
It also plans to build a 5 GW cell manufacturing plant – using the same technology as in China – in a building next to the first facility
The project could require a €650 million investment and create 2,500 jobs
The company aims to apply for a building permit in May 2025
Das Solar said on April 11 that it had signed its first two agreements in France: one with Suez to reprocess end-of-life solar panels
and another with the Île-de-France Photovoltaic Institute for technological development
The company aims to build a regional industrial hub for the solar sector
though it did not discuss its future projects
For the other components of the solar panels
it plans to work with its Chinese and European subcontractors
Das Solar operates 14 factories throughout the world
with a total panel and cell capacity of 55 GW

Chinese manufacturer DAS Solar says it will open a €109 million ($115.3 million) panel production plant in Mandeure
From pv magazine France
Chinese PV module maker DAS Solar plans to build a 3 GW solar panel factory in Mandeure
Vice President Shi Si announced the project during a recent press briefing organized by the Pays de Montbéliard Agglomération (PMA)
The company will invest €109 million to establish three production lines in a 51,000 sqm facility
repurposing a former Faurecia (now Forvia) automotive subcontractor site
DAS Solar set up DAS Solar France in September to facilitate the project and aims to begin production by 2025
The company also plans to expand into the full PV supply chain
including solar cell manufacturing and subcontracting for cables
and wafers through partnerships with Chinese and local suppliers
This factory wil be DAS Solar's first in Europe
adding to its 14 existing sites in China employing 8,900 people
Shi attributed the decision to strong demand in the European Union for locally manufactured products and productive discussions with the French government
The company considered Germany and Spain before selecting France for the facility

Analysis of seven newly discovered engraved La Tène beads from the Mathay-Mandeure sanctuary in Doubs
has refined the chronology for the manufacture of such rare artefacts
and increases our understanding of Late Iron Age ritual deposition practices
Analysis of 89 European Iron Age glass objects from the Mathay-Mandeure Celtic sanctuary in Doubs, France, has led to the discovery of seven previously unnoticed La Tène engraved glass beads. Evidence for the Late Iron Age working of cold glass is extremely rare, with only a single Celtic engraved glass bead known from the Müsingen-Rain cemetery in Switzerland (Gambari & Kaenel Reference Gambari and Kaenel2001)
Examination and elemental analysis of the objects increases our understanding of the depositional practices carried out at the Mathay-Mandeure sanctuary
The discovery also encourages greater attention to the potential of glass beads as a medium for bearing engravings
Excavations carried out by Clément Duvernoy (Reference Duvernoy1883) at the monumental sanctuary of ‘Clos du Château’ between 1882 and 1883 yielded almost a tonne of melted Gaulish coins
This prompted a series of unofficial excavations
particularly by local antiquarian Aimé Péquignet
Aimé Péquignet discovered a large pit containing many artefacts
the assemblage also contained iron objects
bronze ornaments (including two zoomorphic figurines)
147 bracelets and a dozen other items are now housed in the National Museum of Archaeology in Saint-Germain-en-Laye
These types were produced at the end of the La Tène C2 period
has allowed us to refine the chronology for the manufacture of these beads further
Figure 1 Engraved beads n° 52491.440 and .378 from the Mathay-Mandeure sanctuary (National Museum of Archaeology in Saint-Germain-en-Laye
Figure 2 Engraved beads n° 52491.460 and .473 from the Mathay-Mandeure sanctuary (National Museum of Archaeology in Saint-Germain-en-Laye
Figure 3 Engraved beads n° 52491.465 and .475 from the Mathay-Mandeure sanctuary (National Museum of Archaeology in Saint-Germain-en-Laye
Figure 4 Top) engraved beads n° 52491.464 from the Mathay-Mandeure sanctuary; bottom) the seven engraved beads (National Museum of Archaeology in Saint-Germain-en-Laye
while bead .473 appears to have been manufactured at an earlier date
the engraving was probably added at the same time as the other engravings—perhaps specifically for the purpose of deposition
Figure 5 Average compositions of the engraved beads expressed in oxide weight percentage
The Mandeure deposit and the presence of glass objects in other sanctuary contexts suggest that these valuable objects were discarded as part of ostentatious social practices
As with the glass bead from the Müsingen-Rain cemetery
the Mandeure engravings appear to use a Lepontic or Insubro-Lepontic script
The deciphering of such engravings will undoubtedly open interesting avenues for future research
The authors thank Bernard Gratuze for his collaboration in the analysis of the beads
and Thomas Markey for his research on the inscriptions

Back in October, 2019, we told you that Mahindra purchased 100 percent of Peugeot Motorcycles
The Indian manufacturer had long held a significant stake in the French two-wheeler manufacturer
but only took control of the whole thing late last year
This raised concerns about whether production would move away from the historic factory located in Mandeure
Mahindra said that this wasn’t the case—and Peugeot has now confirmed that the newly updated Metropolis will be produced entirely at the Mandeure factory
You can see a walkaround of the 2020 model at EICMA 2019 above
We don’t know full details of how big an update Peugeot’s three-wheeler will receive
but the company plans an official unveiling on September 8
the current Metropolis is powered by a 339cc four-stroke
It produces 35 horsepower and 28 lb.-ft of torque
and stops with twin disc brakes up front and a single disc in the rear
Peugeot has been doing a tilting three-wheeler for some time now, and it would definitely be interesting to see how it stacks up against the Yamaha Tricity 300
One could consider the Piaggio MP3 in this class as well
since it’s probably the first three-wheeled scooter that most people think of
except it doesn’t lean the same way as the other two
All three are operable in many places with just a driver’s license
and no special motorcycle license required
which is at least in part why this niche exists
Piaggio currently sells its MP3 in North America
It remains to be seen if Yamaha will bring either of its Tricities here
and Peugeot motorcycles of any kind haven’t officially been sold here in years
For everywhere else in the world that will get it
the new Peugeot Metropolis will most certainly be compliant with Euro5 emissions standard
we’ll have to wait until September 8 to see details

The move comes a year after DAB’s acquisition by Peugeot Motocycles
Bringing DAB’s electric bike to market was a major focus of the partnership from the start
so the DAB 1α will be manufactured at Peugeot’s Beaulieu-Mandeure factory—and shipped worldwide
with pricing starting from €14.900 [about $15,920]
The DAB 1α uses a new double-cradle steel frame
matched to a trellis subframe and a cast aluminum swingarm
manufactured from injection-molded ABS plastic
Styled as a neo-futuristic supermoto of sorts
it’s finished off with a sumptuous Alcantara saddle
The DAB 1α uses a French-made 72V battery that’s repairable
It has a nominal capacity of 6.2 kWh and a maximum capacity of 7,1 kWh
making the 1α a maximum range of 150 km [93.2 miles]
The onboard charger works with a home electrical outlet or a level two charger
DAB went all-out on the 1α’s running gear
A collaboration with the Italian suspension company Paioli yielded bespoke adjustable 46 mm upside-down forks
and a rear shock with a remote reservoir and preload adjustment
17” laced wheels from Faba are wrapped in Pirelli Diablo IV tires
while the braking system uses Brembo calipers
Airbus generates around 12,000 tons of waste a year
so the company has collaborated with research institutions and small businesses to find ways to reuse previously-loved carbon fiber
which are then repurposed to create the bike’s stunning forged carbon parts
The DAB 1α also comes with switchable rider mods; ‘Eco,’ ‘Standard,’ ‘Sport,’ ‘Reverse,’ and ‘Nitrous.’ No
DAB hasn’t figured out how to inject nitrous into an engine that doesn’t use petrol
the Nitrous button is a tribute to the iconic 2000s video game
There’s a small glove box in front of the rider
lined with Alcantara and equipped with USB charging sockets
Customers have the option of adding a Quadlock phone mount and wireless charger

My late mother used to eulogise about the bliss of summer drives to Biarritz during the 1950s
poring over photographs of the family Rover parked up outside the swish Hôtel du Palais or in front of Rocher de la Vierge
enjoying the drive between the Atlantic surf and the chic resort’s elegant buildings
These days the journey only offers motoring pleasure if you like being stuck in traffic
or — as I discovered last month — if you can whisk past the nose-to-tail jams in near silence on what is probably the coolest-looking electric motorcycle yet to hit the roads
The minimalist design is inspired by BauhausThe €14,900 (or about £12,500) DAB 1A will take you 90 miles on a single charge at speeds of up to 75mph and
with its signature flat front and overall minimalist design
is a quietly whirring masterclass in the Bauhaus theory of form and function
it doesn’t hail from the Far East but from the Bayonne studio of the 32-year-old design engineer Simon Dabadie
audacity and the mighty reach of the internet
succeeded in turning DAB Motors from being a cottage industry into a subsidiary of the automotive giant Peugeot Motocycles in just a few years
Simon de Burton test-driving the DAB 1A motorcycleDabadie
was raised in the tiny village of Mont Gaillard
but moved to Bayonne in 2012 to study engineering
later ending up working as a remote freelance designer for Roland Sands
television personality and custom bike builder
Around the same time he became obsessed with the idea of building fast
light and agile urban motorcycles by buying old Honda off-road bikes for a few hundred euros and remodelling them using 3D scanning and the design skills he had learnt at engineering school
“I made the fuel tanks and fenders from flax fibre
and came up with the flat front panel that is now a DAB signature,” he says
“At the time it was easy to get exposure because Instagram was quite new and I ended up making six examples of what I called the DAB LM — short for Lightweight Motorcycle — for customers.”
The DAB 1As are made from repurposed carbon fibreBut the time needed to find machines and create each build from scratch meant it wasn’t financially realistic
even though each bike went for between €15,000 and €25,000
So in 2018 he approached local business people in a successful fund-raising round that enabled him to buy a batch of 25 new
petrol-engined SWM machines to use as the basis for his LM-S model
Dabadie then had to go through the process of homologating it (creating a batch of mechanically identical vehicles that can be approved for sale) to make the bikes road legal
a three-year administrative headache that he describes as a great lesson
“It enabled me to offer those 25 bikes all over the world
What he calls DAB’s petrol era lasted until 2021
at which point he decided to switch to electric power
“I didn’t do it before because the technology wasn’t really available
but once it started emerging I realised it was the way to go — electric motorcycles are really easy to ride
and the lack of noise means they can be ridden without annoying people.”
Dabadie was contacted by the marketing team from the UK fashion house Burberry
petrol-engined machines and wanted to know if it was possible to build something similar with electric power
because I had already started working on the electric design — and it was also a weird coincidence because
I had sketched a bike based on some of the signatures of Dior fashion but no one had seen it
“Burberry was drawn to DAB’s atelier approach and the fact that the designs have a strong emphasis on luxury and craftsmanship — so we agreed to build 20 bikes in special colours and with seats embossed with the Burberry monogram.”
Early examples of the €30,000 machine were displayed in Burberry stores around the world
The DAB 1A is powered by an 11kw motor and 7.1kw battery packThe global exposure attracted buyers ranging from the footballer Marcus Rashford to the Colombian reggaeton singing star J Balvin and Rosalia
the first Spanish music artist to exceed a billion streams on Spotify
taking an entire year to make just 20 bikes was not good commercially,” he says
“I knew I needed to industrialise the design
but that meant finding a financial partner that was also an industry player who could replicate machines in the tens of thousands
The DAB’s battery pack features individually replaceable cells“But I was just a lone engineer
sitting in a tiny studio workshop converted from a building that was originally an annexe to Bayonne Cathedral
Scaling businesses was not my speciality.”
Dabadie dashed off an email to the “information” address at the HQ of Peugeot Motocycles
which was acquired last year by the Munich-based holding company Mutares
Remarkably the firm responded to Dabadie’s message after three days
invited him for face-to-face talks four days later and
had acquired 80 per cent of DAB and laid down plans to build the initial 400 1A bikes
There is now a waiting list of 2,000 would-be buyers
and November will see the start of production in the same Beaulieu Mandeure factory where Peugeot began making motorcycles way back in 1890 — making it the oldest such continuously operating facility in the world
“I am really proud to know that my bike will be made there,” Dabadie says
“When you walk in you can almost feel the history
At one point it turned out 1,200 examples of the 103 moped every day.”
The launch edition comes in a choice of grey or white bodyworkThe 400 launch edition DAB 1As features components made from repurposed carbon fibre left over from the construction of Airbus jets
with top-quality Paoli suspension front and rear
Alcantara seats and a choice of white or grey bodywork
Unlike other electric motorcycles — and most EVs in general — the DAB’s battery pack features individually replaceable cells and its charger is integral with the machine
so topping up the power is a simple matter of attaching a lead compatible with both domestic sockets and fast-charge stations
riding the DAB is as simple as using a moped — just twist the throttle and go
But it’s also a whole lot more exhilarating thanks to its 11kw motor and 7.1kw battery pack
makes for rapid acceleration in Eco and Comfort modes and very rapid in Sport
Riding the DAB is as simple as using a mopedAnd for those who want a blast of true warp speed
there’s also a Nitrous button modelled on the controls of a retro gaming station
Press it and the motor’s output is briefly boosted to 25.5 kw
providing a short burst of extra acceleration
a regular DAB model will enter full production next year with customising options available at extra cost
Order one early and you might even be in time to dodge next summer’s Biarritz traffic …More at dabmotors.com

German investment fund Mutares said on Wednesday it had acquired French bike-maker Peugeot Motocycles
Mahindra had in late 2019 purchased the 49 per cent it did not previously own from the PSA Group for an undisclosed sum
said it had "successfully completed the acquisition of 50 per cent equity and a controlling stake of 80 per cent in Peugeot Motocycles (PMTC) from Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M)
"M&M will remain a co-shareholder to support new product launches and the strong growth expected in the coming years," the fund said without giving financial details
Peugeot Motocycles designs and manufactures two- and three-wheel motorcycles distributed through 3,000 points of sale by subsidiaries
and dealers in France and internationally on three continents
boasting revenues of around €140 million
owns its manufacturing facility at Mandeure
in a joint venture with China's Jinan Qingqi Motorcycle

Electric mobility has evolved far beyond quiet scooters and sleek commuter bikes
the two-wheeled EV scene embraces a broad spectrum—from retro-inspired models to muscular off-road beasts
dual-sport motorcycles are stealing the spotlight
One brand leading the charge is France’s DAB Motors
it brings that ethos into the electric era with the DAB 1α X—a futuristic scrambler that’s part design statement
Built in Peugeot’s historic Mandeure factory
the 1α X is powered by a 25.5 kW motor (34.6 hp) delivering a whopping 395 Nm of torque
promising up to 150 km (93 miles) of range
Charging takes around three hours using a standard plug
and a “Nitrous” mode offers quick bursts of extra power when the mood strikes
It’s ready for dirt and pavement alike thanks to Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires and a fully adjustable Paioli suspension system with TIN Gold treatment
Brembo brakes with ABS complete the package
What truly stands out is the detail work: a subframe made from upcycled carbon fiber from Airbus aircraft
It’s a motorcycle that’s as much about sustainability as it is about speed
But all this refinement comes at a price: starting at $16,725 (plus shipping) – around 14 700 euros
It’s a serious ask for a machine that—despite its performance—is more passion project than practical choice
Not the average commuter or weekend trail enthusiast
The DAB 1α X targets those who seek exclusivity
It’s the two-wheeled equivalent of a luxury electric sports car — that just happens to go off-road
The 1α X isn’t here to be everyone’s electric bike
It’s here to redefine what an e-moto can be: bold
