crunching and slurping at the movies in France: The country's increasingly fraught fight against an unprecedented surge in coronavirus infections is putting a stop to eating and drinking at French cinemas
just as they show signs of recovering from the brutal economic bashing of lockdowns last year
COVID-19 measures kicking in Monday
once France’s New Year's celebrations are out of the way
will mean an enforced rest for popcorn machines and ice creams left in cold storage
The ban of at least three weeks on eating and drinking also applies to theaters
For cinema owners hoping to lure back movie fans who switched to home-viewing during the pandemic
not being able to tempt them with candies and soft drinks is another blow
French cinemas sold 96 million tickets in the eight months they have been reopened this year
But ticket sales are still down 55% compared to 2019
the National Center for Film and Moving Images said Thursday in its look at French cinemas' annual sales
which supplies 70% of France's cinemas with popcorn
was deluged with both order postponements and delivery requests from movie houses expecting good sales on the final weekend before the food and drink ban
with "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and “Matrix Resurrections” featuring on billboards
“It's like being told to apply the emergency brake to the high-speed train,” said Vincent Meyer
the government is hoping its latest measures will also apply a brake on the fast-spreading omicron variant
but without derailing France's economic recovery that is a vote-getter for President Emmanuel Macron
there'll once again also be limits on crowd numbers at public venues
with no more than 2,000 allowed indoors and 5,000 outdoors
The limits don't apply to election campaign rallies
infuriating some musicians who will no longer be allowed to perform for stand-up crowds
that they may rebrand their concerts as political rallies
France's COVID-19 death toll is already at more than 123,000 people
New infections are higher than they have ever been and hospitals are again overburdened with the gravely sick
Many health experts had called for stricter measures than those announced by the government this week
with some pushing for renewed closures of schools and businesses
France reported another 206,243 coronavirus infections Thursday
just shy of the record 208,000 cases set Wednesday
manager of the Le Fontenelle cinema in the town of Marly-le-Roi west of Paris
even if he'll no longer be able to sell cotton candy
He says he has lost about half of his clientele during the pandemic
He expects the ban on food and drinks to hit larger cinemas particularly hard and says it may even help lure back fans to smaller
“There are lots of people who hate hearing the sounds of popcorn in the auditoriums," he said
people who were watching Netflix and are saying to themselves
Cinemagoers said they understood the need for new measures
although some struggled to see any logic in not being able to indulge their sweet cravings in cinemas or theaters when restaurants are still allowed to serve food and drinks
“It’s going to be strange to just go to the cinema and do without all these little moments,” Vincent Bourdais said as he lined up in Marly-le-Roi for “Spiderman.”

After a team-bonding dinner on the evening of Thursday
the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Kheira Hamraoui was beaten with an iron bar by a masked man in Chatou
The attacker appeared to target her legs, leaving deep large purple bruises
an open wound on the back of her right thigh and gashes to her right shin and the palm of her right hand
Hamraoui’s PSG team-mate at the time
was pinned to the steering wheel during the attack
On Tuesday, November 9, five days after the attack, Diallo played 89 minutes in PSG’s midfield in a Champions League game against Real Madrid
The club said Hamraoui was absent for “personal reasons”
Diallo was arrested at her home in the suburb of Marly-le-Roi
Having been questioned and held in custody for 36 hours
she was released without charge on the Thursday evening
the public prosecutor for Versailles referred the case to the magistrate responsible for conducting an investigative hearing before any criminal trial
The investigation was opened for “aggravated assault” and “criminal conspiracy”
The same day, Le Monde reported the theory of a revenge attack based on the relationship between Hamraoui and Eric Abidal — the former France men’s international and Barcelona men’s director of football
The public prosecutor told Le Monde that Abidal would “be questioned soon”
They added the theory of a revenge attack was “one lead among others”
It is thought this angle has now been ruled out of the investigation
The public prosecutor confirmed Abidal has never been implicated in the investigation but was heard as a witness
But, 11 months on, the case has exploded again, after the contents of a 37-page police report appeared in Le Parisien
There are notes about Diallo’s alleged “hatred for Hamraoui
whom she considered an obstacle to her own sporting career”
details of malicious anonymous phone calls made to PSG players
There has been what has been described as “collateral” damage too
with changes in PSG management; never mind the impact on the two players’ careers
Hamraoui has said she feels she is the victim of a “smear campaign”
with team-mates turning against her and insults from the stands
Her name has been “dragged through the mud”
Diallo’s PSG contract has expired and she is concentrating on trying to clear her name
A proposed documentary about the attack was offered to PSG men’s team star Kylian Mbappe’s company
and a separate proposition has been made to Hamraoui
The Athletic has spoken to those close to PSG and the players
are refraining from commenting until the police investigation has concluded
as is the French Football Federation (FFF)
Diallo and four young men were arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated assault and criminal conspiracy
Three of the men have admitted they were at the scene of the crime last November and knew why they were recruited
The fourth man admitted to beating Hamraoui
All four implicated Diallo as the person who had organised the attack
so she could take Hamraoui’s position in future competitions
A fifth man was arrested and charged for the same offences last week
the charge of “organised gang fraud” was added to the investigation
no one is specifically targeted and no one has been indicted for this offence,” the public prosecutor told The Athletic
Diallo has denied any involvement in the attack on Hamraoui and requested a deferred hearing to prepare her defence
She was detained at the women’s prison in Versailles for five days
Diallo was released under strict conditions
including an order to stay at her father’s home in Grenoble
surrender her passport and refrain from contacting anyone involved with the case or members of the PSG team
She also had to pay €30,000 (£26,600; $29,300) to the court as a guarantee
which the prosecutor confirmed has been paid
the court of appeal ruled Diallo would remain under judicial supervision
forbidding her from entering the Ile-de-France region
or contacting the fifth man who was arrested and charged
told The Athletic: “Madame Diallo proclaims her innocence and asserts she has nothing to do with the attack on Madame Hamraoui
“We believe there is no material element to link Madame Diallo to the attack
even though she has been very shaken by the five days she spent in prison.”
Hamraoui’s lawyer, Julia Minkowski, who took over from predecessor Said Harir in June, said her client was “relieved, shocked and disgusted” by what she “discovered in the proceedings” in a TV interview with French channel BFMTV
Minkowski stated Hamraoui was subjected to a barrage of hate from social media and PSG supporters
experienced “a campaign of psychological destabilisation against her”
seen voice notes she sent to friends and family made public and been sidelined by PSG
Hamraoui’s communications team confirmed to The Athletic that they have been approached about the possibility of producing a documentary and writing a book on the attack and are looking at all opportunities
Both Diallo’s and Hamraoui’s football careers have been disrupted. Neither player participated in the European Championship this summer
Diallo’s PSG contract expired and she has stopped playing in order to focus solely on the case
The 27-year-old stopped working with her agent
has one year left on her contract in Paris
The police report stated, as reported in Le Parisien: “It has… been irrefutably proven that Aminata Diallo harboured a real hatred for her club partner
whom she considered an obstacle to her own sporting career.”
Redon confirmed these were the words of the investigators
sometimes there are messages from Madame Diallo directed towards Madame Hamraoui,” the lawyer said
“We know that they are made in the spirit of competition
Madame Hamraoui is absolutely not an obstacle to Madame Diallo
The two players played on several occasions together on one pitch
The presence of one does not exclude the other
And this occurred even at a time very close to the case in hand.”
The investigators, Le Parisien’s report said
downward psychological spiral that has become
Diallo’s lawyer responded: “This formulation demonstrates the completely unhidden bias that they have in this case against Madame Diallo
That is the interpretation of the police but it cannot be like that in an independent procedure.”
On September 25, Le Journal du Dimanche reported that findings had led investigators to think that Diallo may suffer from a “double personality”
Redon told The Athletic: “That is the interpretation of the police
The judge has not ordered a psychologist or psychiatrist’s report.”
When Diallo returned to Paris in the summer of 2021 from a six-month loan spell with Spain’s Atletico Madrid
her goal was to extend her contract with PSG and make the French national team
WhatsApp messages from Diallo’s two phones
which were confiscated on the night of her arrest in November
revealed her “deep jealousy” of Hamraoui to investigators
were sent to those close to Diallo and read: “She hasn’t trained with us since the Roma match
and she’s coming back to start against Bayern
while you did what you had to do during the time she wasn’t there.”
playing in the Women’s Cup — a friendly invitational tournament in the United States
Their first match in it was against Bayern Munich on August 18
sent other messages detailing how a close friend would be capable of attacking Hamraoui
jealous and calculating like her… I tell him to destroy her
Talking about a dispute with a former PSG coach
the report said another of Diallo’s messages read: “I should have made sure it cut his legs off.”
said that these phrases are “totally taken out of context”
“We do not know the messages (which came) before or after,” she said
“They are completely divorced from a sporting context — i.e
when we know that all the best sportspeople at a high level
do not mince their words towards one another
The police are choosing which messages they want to appear in the investigation.”
Diallo is also said to have searched on Google “break/breaking a kneecap” and “dangerous cocktail of (medicinal) drugs”
Her lawyer confirmed to The Athletic that these searches took place several days before the attack
“She never searched how to break a kneecap,” her lawyer said
“She searched ‘break/breaking a kneecap’ and ‘dangerous cocktail of (medicinal) drugs’ but again it’s all a matter of context
“One does not know what she searched before or after
It is possible to make this search seem to say anything and everything
are asking for access to the searches of the whole day
to find out the context before and after these searches
They can be explained by a lot of other things than what the police want them to say.”
Diallo’s lawyer explained on French TV: “There is a (Dijon) player who is called Jordan Marie
Jordan Marie went to play his match at Grenoble
He broke his kneecap and he speaks about it saying ‘my kneecap is at a right angle’.”
Marie said he felt his kneecap move when the injury happened but Dijon made clear to French media that he had in fact ruptured knee ligaments in July
At the end of October 2021, the French national team met up to play two World Cup qualifiers
Hamraoui had to withdraw from the squad due to injury
During that October national team camp, several PSG players received anonymous phone calls from a man who spoke badly of Hamraoui, calling her, according to Le Parisien
The PSG players did not say anything to the club because they were on international duty
Hamraoui informed the police on November 5
said to be Diallo’s acquaintance and known to Hamraoui
in Lyon-Corbas prison for unrelated crimes
The police questioned him about the attack but he no longer appears to feature in their inquiries
Six days after the attack on Hamraoui
Diallo was arrested and held in custody for 36 hours
had expressed concerns about Diallo’s involvement to the police
had told police about the relationship between Hamraoui and Abidal when the police asked her about the attackers shouting the phrase “married man”
said her client would file for a divorce in Barcelona after her husband admitted to having had an extramarital affair with Hamraoui
Eric Abidal pleaded for forgiveness from his wife on Instagram
in a post that is no longer available to view
Hayet Abidal has always strongly denied any involvement in the attack. Although she spoke voluntarily to police in late December to help them with her inquiries
she has never been under suspicion in the case
Diallo’s lawyer has defended her client drawing Hayet Abidal into the situation
saying: “Madame Diallo didn’t lead (the police) at all
‘Did the phrase “married man” make you think of something regarding Madame Hamraoui?’
She explained what it brought to mind for her
She has no power to orientate or tell the police what they must do.”
After Diallo’s release, the police bugged her phone, apartment and car. The subsequent recordings, Le Parisien reported, revealed Diallo to have multiple conversations with an advisor named Cesar M. He is the partner of PSG player Kadidiatou Diani and the advisor of PSG and France’s top striker Marie-Antoinette Katoto
as well as other French and overseas players
Diallo and Cesar M communicated 33 times via their mobile network between October 2 and October 29
There is nothing apparently unusual about this as they have known each other for several years
and share a common language and similar interests
After the attack on Hamraoui on November 4
Le Parisien reported the investigators believe this change in behaviour is “an apparent desire to conceal”
Diallo’s lawyer dismissed the idea that this suggested there was something to hide
telling The Athletic: “In 2022 everyone uses encrypted messaging
Telegram or Snapchat to deal with everyday life.”
the investigators’ report said Cesar M allegedly used “intimidation and even threats to force the club’s directors to extend the contracts of all the players whose interests he claimed to be defending”
Cesar M has denied trying to intimidate PSG and his lawyer
previously told Le Parisien his client “continues to have peaceful and constructive relations with PSG”
Diallo and Hamraoui restarted their own personal training
PSG provided them with bodyguards and psychological support and were in daily conversation with them to adapt to their needs
decided Hamraoui and Diallo would train alone for one week and together for the second week
“Seven terrible days because the two girls didn’t talk to each other,” he said in an interview with L’Equipe
One more than the other… And in the third week
hoping that the winter break would allow everyone to start again.”
Hamraoui and Diallo returned to the pitch for the first time since the attack on January 23
supporters held banners which read: “Aminata Diallo we strongly support you”
referring to claims about the number of lovers Hamraoui has had
Hamraoui was called up to France’s national team for the Tournoi de France — a friendly tournament
In their last game of that competition, against the Netherlands on February 22
Hamraoui’s PSG team-mates Katoto and Diani celebrated France’s second goal by making an “A” symbol with their hands
Hamraoui came on as a substitute in the 76th minute
“It was a celebration for Aminata Diallo,” confirmed Diani to the media after the game
Sonia Souid — Hamraoui’s agent — called out the FFF for not condemning the act
the FFF said it had no comment to make while the investigation is ongoing
I had a discussion with Kheira,” Souid said
“I told her we won’t be able to do anything because we are talking about two senior players in the French team
Hamraoui was then booed by spectators during a match against Montpellier in Paris while a banner in support of Diallo was unfurled
sent a letter to the PSG’s HR director and director of legal affairs
The letter detailed “a certain number of facts that seriously alter the psychological health of my client in the context of her professional practice” and added that Diallo
“These behaviours have resulted in a deterioration of my client’s working conditions
altering her mental health and compromising her professional future,” he wrote
Harir’s letter also said that the PSG trio had not been “worried or sanctioned despite the damning elements that have been brought to (the club’s) attention”
The lawyer demanded the club implement measures to “put an end to the troubles of which (his client) is a victim in order to preserve her mental and physical health”
according to Hamraoui’s communications advisor
But sources close to PSG say the club have provided support to their players throughout the year
PSG refrained from commenting on an internal HR process
placed the advisor Cesar M’s phone line under surveillance
a conversation between him and PSG’s then-general manager of the women’s team
told Rame that the extension of Katoto’s contract would happen on the conditions that Diallo also received a contract extension and that Hamraoui would leave
It is also reported that Cesar M discussed with Rame an incident involving then-coach Olle-Nicolle which could tarnish the coach’s
This relates to alleged inappropriate behaviour which took place during that US tour last August
Olle-Nicolle is alleged to have put his hand on an underage player’s bottom before she went onto the pitch
PSG became aware of the incident upon the team’s return to France
It was raised internally and the player’s father had a meeting with the club’s sports director to discuss what had happened
It was acknowledged that the behaviour was not sexual harassment but was inappropriate
Olle-Nicolle is said to have apologised and ensured his behaviour would change
agreed that there was no need to escalate further
During an episode of talk show Touche Pas A Mon Poste on French TV
Cesar M said: “I hear rumours of a PSG coach touching a young player
I had a meeting in the context of Marie-Antoinette Katoto’s contract extension
“At no time did I make any threatening remarks
PSG suspended Olle-Nicolle by mutual consent after saying some of the club’s players were allegedly exposed to “inappropriate actions and comments”
“I arrived at the training centre one morning and was told about these accusations,” Olle-Nicolle told L’Equipe
“It was so unreal… I was stabbed in the back.”
The public prosecutor announced the opening of a judicial investigation for “sexual assault by a person in authority”
but no charges have been brought against the 61-year-old
PSG also launched a formal investigation and then released a statement on July 31 which said the club and Olle-Nicolle had “decided to end their collaboration by mutual agreement”
It added: “Paris Saint-Germain specifies that
following the internal investigation carried out on May 24
no fault or misconduct has been found against him.”
Olle-Nicolle told L’Equipe: “I was used… a collateral victim of the Hamraoui case.”
Diallo and PSG men’s team striker Mbappe’s family were in contact a couple of weeks after the attack in November
“We met three times,” she told the newspaper about Diallo
“A first time in November in Paris during a presentation of the comic book on the life of Kylian
then in Dubai during the Christmas holidays
and a third time at the Parc des Princes during a Champions League match.”
Lamari said she “discussed the subject of Aminata Diallo’s contract extension with the PSG management
disinterested way and always in the context of the documentary project
There was never any mention of this subject during my trip to Doha in April (this year) when I was focused on the contract extension of my son
“When I learned that PSG did not want to offer a new contract to Aminata for reasons probably related to the case
withdrew from the documentary project a few weeks later
“We can hate each other off the field, but on the field we have to win,” PSG captain Grace Geyoro told L’Equipe in an article published on Friday
in the lead-up to their biggest game of the season — a Champions League semi-final against fellow French side Lyon
“I tried to make sure that everyone could feel good on the pitch.”
The sporting rivalry between Hamraoui and Diallo has
been highlighted by more phone-tapping recordings
three days before that Champions League semi-final’s first leg
Cesar M is alleged to have said to Diallo that Hamraoui would be starting
she will start — it’s f****** sick,” said Cesar M
the problem is the coach and Rame,” replied Diallo
Diallo’s lawyers said her messages were taken out of context
there was a training ground dispute between Hamraoui and three team-mates: Sandy Baltimore
Diani (who is Cesar M’s partner) and Katoto
we misunderstood each other… There were just words
Olle-Nicolle had felt he had managed to hold the squad together but
He described the “unbearable behaviour” and said he had to be careful with everything he said because “there were clans everywhere”
“It seemed to bother some people that this team was still functioning despite what was going on behind the scenes,” he added
noting his pride that he did not “give in to the pressure from the entourage of certain players” and continued to select Hamraoui
But Hamraoui decided not to travel with the team and ruled herself out of the crucial game
Diallo had been absent since the Friday with a stomach bug
PSG had extended Katoto’s contract until 2025
Diallo’s deal had expired and she’d left the club
PSG wanted to create a new dynamic following a testing campaign
appointing former Lyon head coach Gerard Precheur as their new boss on August 1
Precheur came with his assistant (and son) Jocelyn
and fitness coaches Guillaume Denis and Quentin Bellu
Olle-Nicole’s former assistants Bernard Mendy and Michel Audrain no longer work with the first team and now coach the women’s youth team
the former women’s first-team co-ordinator
now works on the construction of the women’s training centre
PSG announced they had appointed Angelo Castellazzi and Sabrina Delannoy as women’s sports director and women’s assistant sports director respectively
was previously working at the club’s foundation while Castellazzi was assistant sporting director for the men’s team
Nobody has replaced Rame directly as women’s team general manager as the club altered the organisation of their sporting department
The new coach and sports director assessed the team and decided which players would stay. Precheur did not see Hamraoui as fitting into his game plan and prepared for the season without her in mind. Instead, PSG signed other midfielders, including Jackie Groenen from Manchester United and Lieke Martens from Barcelona
The club informed Hamraoui that, if she wanted to play, it would be better for everyone to find another club for her, because she was not the coach’s first choice. Manchester United, Juventus, Inter Milan
Roma and Parma expressed interest in a loan move for Hamraoui but the player and her agent declined
The French international transfer window closed on Tuesday
but there is still a possibility of a domestic loan
see out her contract and that she will be open to new projects next summer as a free agent
she has been training alone on the pitch for over seven weeks
PSG confirmed the midfielder would be made available to the head coach if she was wanted as part of the squad
Diallo was placed under judicial supervision
Hours later, PSG started their Champions League qualification campaign against Sweden’s BK Hacken under new manager Precheur
“She’s feeling better now because the truth is coming,” said Pessot
“What is good for her now is that the public opinion of her has totally changed
all the people wanted to get a picture with her
realised that new Dutch recruit Groenen was wearing No 14 — the shirt that was previously hers
“Why did they give my number to another player?”
Hamraoui and Groenen are both listed on PSG’s website with the No 14 shirt
as soon as Groenen — an ambassador for The Cruyff Foundation — joined PSG
she asked to wear that number in honour of Dutch legend Johan Cruyff
who was synonymous with the No 14 shirt in his playing days
PSG agreed but only for Champions League qualification
as Hamraoui was not named on the UEFA list for this part of the competition
Groenen wore No 14 again in the second leg against Hacken in Gothenburg last Wednesday
The advisor Cesar M was also present at the first leg
“This is very difficult (for Hamraoui),” said Pessot
Asked if Hamraoui has received any messages of support
no one should get into that,” said Hamraoui in an interview on France’s BFMTV
The smear campaign is just as powerful as my attack
and you can’t go after a human being like that.”
“It was worse than the physical aggression,” said Souid
“She has been psychologically assaulted for 10 months
harassed at her workplace by several team-mates… And all this under the nose of PSG
Kheira still hasn’t received the slightest message of support from the PSG management
This was a marked change of tone from the Hamraoui camp
Hamraoui had said: “The vast majority of (players) supported me
I was also touched by the support of the whole staff and the club
My return would have been much more difficult if I had not been supported.”
PSG said they are refraining from commenting until the police investigation has concluded
It is understood the club have communicated regularly with Hamraoui and her representatives
which they had provided after the initial attack last November
It is believed the decision to stop 24-hour protection was made a few months later following a discussion with Hamraoui
The club have not provided Hamraoui with 24-hour security as requested but protection for her return journey from their training ground to her house
Security guards have been reintroduced at the training ground
Diallo remains under judicial supervision with strict conditions until the investigation — which has no time limit — has been completed
There will surely be more twists in this extraordinary story

one fact was missing: the identity of the buyer
it turns out that the paper trail leads to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
heir to the Saudi throne and the driving force behind a series of bold policies transforming Saudi Arabia and shaking up the Middle East
The 2015 purchase appears to be one of several extravagant acquisitions – including a $US500 million yacht and a $US450 million Leonardo da Vinci painting – by a prince who is leading a sweeping crackdown on corruption and self-enrichment by the Saudi elite and preaching fiscal austerity at home

Advisers to members of the royal family say the chateau ultimately belongs to the crown prince
Eight Investment was the same company that backed Mohammed’s impulse buy of the 134 metre yacht from a Russian vodka tycoon in 2015

founder of Paris-based luxury property developer COGEMAD
on its plans to move into the UK high-end residential market
What kind of development are you known for?For more than 25 years
COGEMAD has fashioned a new dimension of haute-couture living by creating dream estates that range from historic French chateaux to 21st-century architectural masterpieces
superior craftsmanship and cutting-edge home comforts
Our most well-known development is the Chateau Louis XIV
nestled in a 23ha forested park between Versailles and Marly-le-Roi
This is a project that I conceived and designed over 15 years ago
I kept it in the hope that one day I’d find the ideal location and client who would give me the opportunity to fulfill this dream
How has the luxury residential market been affected by the recession?Lots of property owners left France
and therefore generated a price decrease for all the French market
I remain confident as France stays one of the top destinations for foreigners and a lovely place to have a home in
Why is COGEMAD coming to the UK?The UK has always been an amazing market for high-end residential real estate
we are very keen to bring our savoir-faire in terms of French architecture and quality of designs to the UK
Are all your schemes traditionally inspired? Our main strength is the French classical style
How do you find your architects? They come from very different backgrounds
and have all had extensive work experiences
I like the diversity and dynamic of our team
and find it extremely interesting to have people with different backgrounds working together
When working on the Chateau Louis XIV I teamed with a great architecte en chef des monuments historique
who helped us in the material choices and architectural details in order to build a chateau with the look and feel of a 300-year-old monument
Which of your projects is your favorite and why?By far
I really enjoyed seeing fine craftsmen with traditional skills work in harmony with state-of-the-art technicians; this is how I envision luxury property development today
Do you have any favorite architects?I love the works of Zaha Hadid and Norman Foster
And of course I adore the works of the 17th-century architects such as Louis Le Vau
Who has given you the best advice and what was it?My father
a developer in Saudi Arabia in the 70s and 80s
told me that no matter how small or how big a project is
the most important part will always remain the quality and finish of the workmanship
A Part 3 candidate is showing an alarming reliance on attributing all…
