15/02/2025Roberto De Zerbi’s Olympique de Marseille further consolidate their bid for Champions League football with an emphatic win over Saint-Étienne at the Vélodrome on Saturday afternoon
THE MATCH:Olympique de Marseille further consolidated their spot in second in the Ligue 1 table after dominating at the Vélodrome against a struggling Saint-Étienne outfit
Roberto De Zerbi made it three wins in a row in the top flight against a Sainté outfit that was swallowed up at packed Vélodrome on Saturday afternoon
It was the hosts that started the brightest at a sunny Stade Vélodrome
Captain Leonardo Balerdi nodded the ball into the back of the net for what the Vélodrome thought was the opener
but the referee would consult VAR and end up ruling the goal out for too much contact on ASSE goalkeeper Gautier Larsonneur
Les Phocéens would keep on generating chances to get in front
Mason Greenwood was denied at close range by Larsonneur
before Rabiot blasted over the bar from close range
The breakthrough would come through one of OM’s newest signings
Having already registered three assists so far with Les Olympiens
the Algerian finished emphatically from range with a curled effort from around 20-yards outside the box
It was simply unstoppable for Larsonneur to get any fingertips to it
OM were clearly the side in the ascendancy
with ASSE not making the most of their odd skirmish up the pitch
and Gouiri would be involved in the action once again
This time the Algerian’s drive into the box finished with a cross which deflected off Mikael Nade’s arm
and the referee had to consult VAR before pointing to the spot
OM’s top scorer Greenwood would step up and convert confidently to double the lead for Les Olympiens
Marseille Crushes Le Havre to Strengthen Hold on Second PlaceMarseille showcased their dominance with a commanding 5-1 victory over Le Havre
solidifying their position as second in Ligue 1 and closing in on Paris Saint-Germain
While Luis Enrique Martínez and his squad celebrated their French Super Cup triumph in Qatar
Roberto De Zerbi’s men focused on ensuring victory against the league's bottom-ranked side
deciding the match in the first half with an unassailable 3-0 lead
Valentin Rongier opened the scoring with a thunderous long-range strike
Neal Paupay headed in a precise cross from Quentin Merlin
The onslaught continued in the second half as Elye Wahi capitalized on a perfect assist from Mason Greenwood in the 66th minute
Ulisses Garcia extended the lead in the 75th minute
while André Ayew managed a consolation goal for Le Havre in the 85th
The 5-1 rout underscored Marseille’s determination to keep their title hopes alive
relying on potential missteps by PSG to close the gap
Mason Greenwood has finally dumped his dry spell with a goal in Marseille's 5-0 Ligue 1 win against Montpellier on Sunday
19/01/2025 Strasbourg held Olympique de Marseille in a tactical chess match between coaches Roberto De Zerbi and Liam Rosenior
with Emegha scoring for Les Alsatiens and Greenwood converting a penalty for Les Olympiens in the second half
Liam Rosenior’s Strasbourg came to the Vélodrome and frustrated Robero De Zerbi’s OM
who fought back to earn a point via Mason Greenwood’s penalty after Emmanuel Emegha opened the scoring for Strasbourg in the first half
it was an intense start to the game between the two slides at the Vélodrome
with Strasbourg pouncing on a few errors from the OM defence
before Greenwood’s surging run into the box wasn’t able to finish with a strike on goal
After a stop-and-start ten minutes following
it was Les Olympiens who started to make progress in attacking the Strasbourg goal
Bilal Nadir’s interchanging positioning with Adrien Rabiot was proving useful
as the OM youngster broke through after playing a one-two with his midfield partner
Yet the Moroccan couldn’t find Maupay with his searching low cross
After OM generated most of the chances in the opening exchanges it would be Strasbourg that bided their time and pounced at the right moment
Andrey Santos provided an excellent and incisive through ball which split open the Olympien defence and sent Emmanuel Emegha bearing down on goal
and the South African provided the killer finish in front of goal to draw first blood for the visitors
Rosenior planned the first half to perfection
as Strasbourg were pragmatic and patient in their approach
knowing that OM would dominate the ball but closed down passing lanes and opportunities when possible
Derek Cornelius rose highest from a corner
but his header would float well over the bar
Luis Henrique tried to recreate his last-minute goal from last week with an arrowed strike just inside the box which flew past Petrovic’s right post
De Zerbi rolled the dice with two substitutions
Greenwood would immediately have the chance to equalise in the box
but his curled strike flew just wide of the left post
Habib Diarra raced into the right side of the box and provided a dangerous low cross which would just about be cut out by Rulli
Ulisses Garcia would then be hauled off for Quentin Merlin
before Jonathan Rowe came on for Bilal Nadir
A triple chance would come the way of the hosts
with English pair Greenwood and Rowe both being denied by some excellent blocks and the post to be kept at bay just after the hour mark
That would change when Ligue 1 debutant Robinho Vaz was pulled down in the box by Andrey Santos
and it would be clearly given as a penalty for the hosts
The pressure was on Ligue 1’s top scorer Mason Greenwood to convert from the spot
he could do nothing to stop a well-struck penalty which levelled the game
Emegha was sent through on goal in a mirror image of the opening finish
but his strike on goal would trickle past Rulli but bounce agonisingly off the right post and go out for an RCSA corner.OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE PLAYER RATINGS
His return to the side was a promising one
yet he was at fault with Balerdi for playing onside Emmanuel Emegha for the visitor’s opening goal
Was defensively good in the wing-back position
but didn’t offer enough offensively to get OM up the pitch in the first half
who returned to a partnership with Bilal Nadir in midfield alongside Adrien Rabiot
He lacked that creative spark however to get OM up the pitch quick enough
Was his usual lively self in the opening period of the game
he couldn’t quite find the creative spark that he had in previous weeks for Les Olympiens
Bilal Nadir – 5A solid showing in midfield in a deep lying pair with Højbjerg
The Moroccan has been progressing well since the New Year
and is playing as such that he lets Rabiot take more offensive responsibility
although it wasn’t with success on the evening against Strasbourg.Luis Henrique – 5Mason Greenwood – 5A mixed performance from the UNFP Ligue 1 Player of the Month winner
who lacked focus at some key moments showed nowhere near his clinical best
Yet he stepped up when the pressure was on and when it mattered to convert a vital penalty to level the game.Neal Maupay – 4 He cut a frustrated figure for OM in the first period
and it prompted a change from Roberto De Zerbi to haul him off at half-time for 18-year-old Robinho Vaz
Others: Robinho Vaz – 7A really solid debut in Ligue 1 for the 18-year-old
and gave OM something different up front to Neal Maupay
He earned the penalty which was scored by Greenwood for the leveller with a clever feint past Santos
There’s plenty more reason to give the youngster more game time with Wahi on the sidelines
He almost won it for the Olympiens at the end of the game
bearing on goal after a mistake from the RCSA backline but his strike was blocked
RACING CLUB DE STRASBOURG PLAYER RATINGSDorde Petrovic – 6Guéla Doué – 5
Ismael Doukouré – 6Guemissonmgui Ouattara – 6Sebastian Nanasi – 6Habib Diarra – 5A real leader for Strasbourg in the middle of the park
He was vital in controlling the midfield at moments when RCSA looked on top

The schooner Tara Oceans has been docked in Marseille since yesterday. Moored in front of the MUCEM (the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations) until Sunday, the famous sailboat of the Tara Ocean Foundation
the French organization dedicated to scientific research and the preservation of the marine environment
is at the dock to raise awareness about plastic pollution in the oceans
the schooner is currently on a mission along the European coastline
DirectIndustry boarded the ship with Romain Troublé
Thomas Fettig and Astrid Aguëra contributed to this report
The Tara Oceans schooner arrived yesterday morning in Marseille
for a few days of stopover in front of the MUCEM
The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations is celebrating its 10th anniversary
The famous sailboat was designed by Jean-Louis Étienne for the Arctic
It was later owned by the sailor Sir Peter Blake
The boat has been exploring the seas and oceans of the globe since 1989
The schooner has traveled nearly 600,000 kilometers on water and visited 75 countries
The last time it was in Marseille was in 2019
The Tara Ocean Foundation is a French foundation with a seat at the UN
It is particularly known for its studies on marine biodiversity
13,000 water samples have already been collected by the Tara Foundation according to protocols established by hundreds of laboratories worldwide
The analyses that resulted from this have made it possible to characterize some 200,000 viruses
and to discover 100,000 new species of microalgae
The objective is to characterize the chemical pollution of our coastlines and to see how coastal ecosystems react to the impacts of human activities
Departing from Lorient (France) last April
the schooner arrived in Tallinn (Estonia) in June
it has been descending the coast towards Greece
and then it went up the Spanish coast to arrive in France
It will then sail to Italy before reaching Thessaloniki in Greece by the end of August
it will spend 6 months in the Mediterranean area
Director General of the Tara Ocean Foundation:
“The mission is to understand the watersheds
what are the solutions that need to be implemented to stop the most problematic ones first
The EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory) will then analyze the data
It is the equivalent of CERN in physics for health
with whom the Tara Ocean Foundation collaborates
This laboratory uses genomic techniques typically reserved for medicine but applied to the ocean here
and the seagrass to establish links between land and sea
“It is a fundamental research mission that will bring out future water quality issues
But water quality is a major issue for Europe and especially for the European Green Deal
where we must also think about the climate
and an artist to share and testify to the research and help raise awareness
This is where the sampling mission begins with a set of sampling bottles assembled in a large oceanographic instrument called the CTD rosette
the rosette is capable of sampling in both the Arctic and very warm seas up to 2500 meters deep
It provides information on water salinity and temperature
but also on living organisms present in the water column
“It is from the aft deck that we have access to the sea
And with the oceanographic winch coming from under the aft deck
This allows us to take samples to the bottom of the sea
The bottles are submerged in the open position
They close automatically thanks to a pre-programmed system once the collection is complete
“We can deploy the rosette in meteorological conditions up to 25 knots of wind and 2.50 meters of swell
We stop when we start taking on water on the deck
we cannot work anymore; it becomes dangerous for the equipment
An oceanographic engineer is permanently on board to maintain the equipment
Samples can be taken at the entrance and/or exit of ports to monitor invasive species brought in
The goal is to have a comprehensive view of the entire European coastline
Once the water is collected and brought up with the rosette
The first filtration step is done in the wet lab on the deck
scientists work on characterizing the data
emphasizes that Tara’s mission is to collect data and concentrate samples
They will then be sent to land-based laboratories such as the EMBL for further studies and analyses
“Tara is a laboratory that allows sampling of biological species
but also chemical molecules like carbon or mercury
We will also identify a whole range of pollutants
But we only do sampling; there is no analysis on board.”
Various sampling tools are available in Tara’s laboratories
we pump water directly and pass it through filters to collect biomass.”
pre-filtered water is passed through extraction cartridges
These cartridges attract the chemical molecules we want to sample
The sorting lab also has imaging tools. A Leica binocular microscope. And also a FloCam by Yokogawa that analyzes subvisible particles with flow imaging microscopy
“The FloCam takes photos rapidly and regularly of this plankton
This gives an idea of the microorganisms in the samples
The FloCam is also connected to an open-source AI tool, Ecotaxa
This sorts and categorizes the photos directly on the tree of life
water is continuously filtered throughout the mission to monitor basic physicochemical data
an instrument like the FloCam takes photos of all the particles in a five-milliliter water sample to verify water temperature
Each sample is then packaged in a test tube with a unique barcode
Thousands of these tubes are stored on board
Some of the physical samples are stored in large containers of liquid nitrogen at -180°C
Other samples are kept in freezers located at the front of the boat at -20°C or 2°C
The goal for scientists is not to keep the samples on board for too long. Therefore, the samples are shipped to various laboratories participating in the current project, whenever possible. On the day of our visit, the scientists delivered samples of mercury to the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography in Marseille
Built at the initiative of Jean Louis Etienne in 1989 to explore the Arctic ice
It was constructed with special technical properties to adapt it to polar temperatures
The bottom of the hull is twenty-five millimeters thick
It measures 36 meters in length and 10 meters in width
The boat has two central drifts that provide form stability but no keel
Its rounded shapes allow it to be lifted by the pack ice rather than crushed by the compression of the ice
“I started working with the Foundation almost 20 years ago
the boat is in better condition today than it was twenty years ago
Many workspaces have been really adapted and optimized
so we can’t say it will stop in thirty years.”
while the schooner has been able to sail in all corners of the world
“It is less comfortable in the heat than in the cold because it is very well insulated
There are few openings; it is optimal for cold regions.”
The boat is equipped with two 350-horsepower engines
Samuel admits that due to its size and design
it is difficult to upgrade Tara’s engines to more electric and therefore more environmentally friendly models
the schooner is capable of averaging ten knots
Starting in 2026, a new vessel will join the fleet of the Tara Ocean Foundation. Tara Polar Station
currently under construction in Cherbourg (France)
is a drifting base that will be trapped in the Arctic ice from September 2026
will drift for 14 months and will be able to withstand temperatures of -52°C
This drifting laboratory will feature the same sampling protocols and instruments as the Tara schooner
This equipment will be capable of descending to depths of nearly 2000 meters
is a 1,4 m moon pool that will allow the rosette to be deployed directly into the water from the ship
“When we were in the Arctic with Tara
we had a system with a cable that went outside
so we had to maintain a hole in the ice floe
the idea here is to have continuous access to water at the heart of the ship.”
The mission will study the ecosystem at the ice level
Scientists will also observe fish migrations from the south to the north
They will contribute to alert policymakers to this area which is the focus of many climate-related tensions
we see record-breaking disappearance of sea ice in summer
and the thickness of the sea ice keeps decreasing
We already know that the Arctic is warming three to four times faster than the rest of the planet
This expedition will allow us to predict how we should adapt.”
The presence of the Tara Oceans schooner is part of the 10th-anniversary celebration of the MUCEM
a program is planned throughout the weekend in Marseille for the general public
The Big Blue Museum Exhibition includes visits to the schooner
as well as discussions on the unseen species of the ocean
to try to contribute to improving the fate of this sea.”
Director of the Ocean Culture & Awareness Department of the Tara Foundation
“We will be able to share about the research we conduct on board
to show a little bit the scale between microplastics and marine microorganisms
to understand why this pollution becomes inseparable from microorganisms.”
The idea is also to discuss the challenges of pollution in the Mediterranean and the solutions that can be brought
Tara sets sail again on Sunday morning heading to Nice for a very short stop of three days
It will then perform a sampling sequence for 15 days on the west coast of Italy up to Naples

with arch-rival decried as ‘stab in the back’
It is the quintessential pre-dinner apéro enjoyed in the Provençal afternoon sun
as unmistakably southern French as the clicking sound of a game of pétanque
But at the start of this week the cloudy, aniseed-flavoured aperitif Ricard Pastis left an aftertaste even more bitter than its makers intended in the mouths of some football fans in the southern city of Marseille
When Provence-based spirits giant Pernod Ricard announced on Monday it was entering into a brand partnership with the arch rivals of home side Olympique de Marseille, Paris Saint-Germain
it provoked such an angry backlash that the company revoked the deal only three days later
Ricard’s history has been inextricably linked with Marseille
CEO Alexandre Ricard said in a statement on Thursday announcing the U-turn
so the decision that I’m taking today comes from the heart
I’m sure that everyone who has worked on this project will understand my choice.”
The decision to do a brand tie-in with PSG had provoked fury among some Marseille supporters
“When will the Bordeaux vineyard sponsor Toulouse FC or the Lyonnais bouchons [restaurants serving traditional Lyonnaise food] sponsor Saint-Étienne?” Rum would make a perfectly acceptable aperitif in the future

the only French clubs to have won major European trophies
have shared an intense rivalry since the 1970s
though PSG has started to dominate Ligue 1 since it was taken over by the emir of Qatar in 2011
In response to the news of the brand deal, one fan had rewritten the lyrics to a traditional drinking song dedicated to Pernod Ricard’s Pastis 51, 51 je t’aime
“You used to dominate our bars at all the apéros,” the lyrics shared on Marseille fan accounts read
“Now you’re served in a stadium full of fascists” – a reference to the political leanings of the biggest PSG “ultra” group that used to dominate its Parc des Princes ground in Paris in the 1990s

The blue-and-yellow logo on Ricard bottles was supposedly inspired by the sky and sun seen from Marseille

Long ReadSome 230,000 people attended the arrival of the Olympic torch aboard the Belem ship
The ceremony included an airshow by the Patrouille de France and the surprise appearance of local star rapper Jul as torchbearer
Night had fallen on the Old Port of Marseille
where the rapper Alonzo's concert started half an hour ago
and the crowd had swelled beyond the 150,000 mark
people keep flocking to the Canebière to get closer to the show
The police had already let through a few thousand more spectators to ease the pressure on the barriers
and a line of national police had been deployed to deter any more from squeezing in
Perhaps the event turned out to be a bit too successful for its own good
everything had been smooth sailing as Marseille – which for one day on Wednesday
claimed the title of "center of the world" – celebrated the arrival of the Olympic torch in France
The torch arrived in the port of the country's second-largest city on board the Belem
The day's events had gone off without a hitch
where a myriad of boats traversed the gentle waves
where a patient crowd observed the festivities – 230,000 people have attended
according to Marseille's city hall – or in the skies
electrified by an acrobatic airshow featuring the fighter jets of the Patrouille de France
On the podium in front of the Quai des Belges, three-time Olympic champion Marie-Jo Pérec expressed her emotion. Football star Didier Drogba got the crowd singing along as if at the Vélodrome Stadium, and astronaut Thomas Pesquet emphasized the symbolic aspect of the event
sounding at times like a politician: "France is rediscovering itself with these Games
and that's something that doesn't happen very often." President Emmanuel Macron was booed when he arrrived on the Old Port
"the tenor of the street," brought the crowd to its feet with his rendition of "La Marseillaise."

Does anything of actual significance transpire in this episode, between the milked-dry melodrama? Barres kicks Sabine to the curb as soon as she outlives her usefulness, which we’d already established at the beginning of the previous episode. Julia breaks things off with her charming Tunisian squeeze, Selim (Nassim Si Ahmed), after learning he has a history of thievery. Odd choice, given that she knew about his friendship with certified no-gooder Eric and his hardscrabble life in the slums.
Meanwhile, Taro attempts to broker a truce with Barres by laying his true paternity out in the open. (Isn’t he supposed to be struggling with a life-threatening illness?) He proceeds as though his rival wouldn’t have already known, as though his entire political career — and all the lies and backstabbing that went along with it — hadn’t been so obviously calibrated to strike back at Taro for exactly this purpose.
If only it were as easy to jostle Marseille into action as it is for Farid and his henchmen to crash a Taro campaign event (yet another utterly laughable sequence in an episode full of them). Further mano-a-mano showdowns between Taro and Barres still carry some promise, as does what I can only presume will be a season-capping reckoning for the troublesome usurper. But if there’s still useless filler yet to dock at this port, such small pleasures will soon cease to be much comfort.

Paris Saint-Germain will be able to count upon Marquinhos
The Rouge et Bleu captain hasn't once tasted defeat in 17 competitive fixtures against Marseille since he joined the club nine years ago in 2013
Having occasionally been amongst the goals – he has twice scored against OM at the Vélodrome – the defender remains unbeaten against Les Phocéens
After missing out on the capital club's one and only defeat against them since 2012 – a 1-0 loss on 13th September 2020 – following a positive COVID-19 test
the Brazilian international lifted his first trophy as Paris captain against Marseille in the Trophée des Champions on 13th January 2021 in Lens
If Les Parisiens avoid defeat against Marseille, Marquinhos will draw ever closer to the symbolic milestone of ten years without once losing to them – an exceptional achievement for captain Marqui

Reports suggest the kingdom is keen to add the French club to its growing sports portfolio
Rumours are afoot that Saudi Arabia may soon snap up French football team Marseille
So it is that English club Newcastle United – the kingdom’s top sports asset to date – could have a rival for the riyals of Saudi owners by the time it plays its next competitive game in September
Word coming out of France suggests Saudi Arabia’s state investment vehicle Public Investment Fund (PIF) is closing in on the purchase of a Ligue 1 (premier league) club
based on recent company registration filings by PIF
are leading fans and investors to ponder which club the oil-rich Gulf state may bid for.

Several consortia have previously pitched the French trophy club to state entities in Riyadh
to install legendary footballer Zinedine Zidane as manager.
Speculation surrounding Marseille’s purchase by PIF is also being stoked by reports that the club’s current owner
is trying to buy China’s social media behemoth TikTok
But whether he is willing to drop his French football assets to clinch the Asian deal remains to be seen
it would be consistent with PIF’s aim of acquiring commercially underperforming sports clubs with a global footprint.
Marseille has a long and illustrious history as a club – including winning the newly-branded Uefa Champions League in 1993
Home matches boast average attendances of more than 50,000 people and the team was previously captained by Didier Deschamps
now the French national team manager.
There is potential for cultural alignment between stakeholders
Marseille is a city of almost 900,000 people
To name the French club among its roster of football assets would confer considerable sporting credibility and legitimacy upon Saudi Arabia
the club made 20th place among the highest revenue generating clubs in the world
But these sums represent only around a quarter of what Spain’s Real Madrid earns
PIF will likely be looking at Marseille’s potential for growth
There is for example potential for cultural alignment between stakeholders
Such diasporas are often ignored in football
but a potential Saudi takeover could create interesting fan engagement opportunities
As with Newcastle United and Abu Dhabi-owned Manchester City
seeking value from a football club is a multifaceted commercial proposition
Urban deprivation and social problems in Marseille present several opportunities for Saudi Arabia
perhaps in helping it project soft power amongst an important target audience
the city’s deep-water ports may be of some interest to PIF
Marseille is home to one of the largest cruise ship ports in the world and the third largest container port in the Mediterranean
Both tourism and container shipping are strategic priorities for the kingdom.
Football club ownership has long been a basis upon which to build business networks and extend local political influence
Marseille’s current shirt is even emblazoned with the logo of a French-owned maritime logistics company with offices in Saudi Arabia
For the moment we are talking about rumour and speculation
It could be the case that Saudi Arabia turns its attention to Valencia in Spain
another port city with an underachieving football club
the former does not provide the same cultural alignment as Marseille
while in Italy the government is considering plans to regulate foreign ownership of football clubs.
it seems that the French option for PIF is the most compelling

The number of drug-related homicides amounts to 21 in the French port city since the start of the year
Three men were shot dead with assault rifles on Sunday
which has seen a surge of drug-related gang murders
The trio was part of a group of five men in their 20s who left a nightclub shortly after 5:00 am and were driving away when their car was attacked by unknown assailants with Kalashnikov rifles
The two survivors were unharmed after the attack in a residential neighborhood of Marseille
Police found the getaway car burning nearby
a modus operandi consistent with previous drug-related killings in Marseille where the perpetrators often torch their vehicles to destroy evidence
Early indications were that the men who were attacked lived in a housing project with a high incidence of drug trafficking and some of them were known to police
according to departmental police prefect Frédérique Camilleri
was currently "coveted by a certain number of rival networks"
She also told reporters at the scene "the entire police force has been mobilized to find the perpetrators of these despicable crimes and to dismantle the networks of the traffickers behind this violence"
police had arrested five people for possession of firearms linked to the drugs trade
and seized three Kalashnikov assault rifles
The latest attack brings the number of drug-related homicides in Marseille since the start of the year to 21
The victims are typically young men low in the hierarchy of drug gangs and targeted by killers working for rival gangs
Marseille's mayor Benoit Payan said this month that "this war has been going on for too long" and called on the French government to act "in a firm and strong way" to stop the violence
"The killers don't even bother to hide anymore," Payan said
