Thanks to buzzy cafes and the backing of Chanel’s fashion supremos
usually with an eye to London’s cultural niches but with a foothold in wider British internet humour
It was accompanied by a picture of the type of lifestyle and fashion staples that a certain kind of traveller might enjoy while in the southern French city, including a skinny Vogue cigarette, on-trend wraparound sunglasses and a bottle of Terre d’Hermès eau de toilette
and its most multicultural – immigrant communities include those from Armenia
Spain and north African countries such as Algeria – has long been overlooked
Or maligned because of a perception that it was dangerous – the idea of Marseille as a crime-ridden city was so recurrent in film and television that a crime-subgenre was dubbed “Marseille Noir”
At another time it was perhaps best known by Brits as the city in which Chris Waddle and his mullet lived and played football
a book in which he collaborated with 15 artists on their interpretations of the city
Le Corbusier’s 337-apartment “vertical village”
We need to take risks if we want to show that Chanel is for everyone,” said Bruno Pavlovsky
Its modernist architecture is a draw for many visitors. It was to see the Le Corbusier block that the interior designer and Barbican resident Tom Morris visited this summer from his Provence holiday home
and a little too overdone and chi-chi for my tastes”
Marseille “has just the right amount of edge while being surrounded by incredibly stunning landscapes … I think that is perhaps why it’s coming back as an in-demand place to go.” Also
“it’s a 90-minute flight and you land slap-bang in the middle of the city
another slightly ignored port city to visit.”

buzzy new restaurants and natural wine bars have been opening by the douzaine and it is in part down to its hospitality scene that it is
according to the anonymous meme merchant behind Socks Meeting House
“It’s basically just part of the rotational trending locations
name-checking other cities that have had their moment in the sun
“They all link to a culinary east London atypical thing of ‘oh look we do oil-drowned anchovies and pan con tomate for £18 each’,” they said
“Combine that with a hyper trend click-based mentality of people going on TikTok and seeing ‘come with me to the top five best small plate restaurants in (insert hype location)’.”
Strasbourg Shocks and Beats MarseilleOlympique Marseille suffered their first loss of the season, falling 1-0 to Strasbourg, which dropped them from the top spot they shared with PSG and Monaco down to third place in Ligue 1.
A goal from Diego Moreira, his first in professional football after his time at Chelsea, ended Marseille's hopes of staying at the top of the French league. With a powerful left-footed shot from the edge of the area just before halftime, he decided a match in which Marseille struggled to grab at least a point.
Especially in the second half, after a first half where they had no chances. After the break, Marseille came back strong, with Mason Greenwood nearly equalizing twice: first, his attempt was brilliantly saved by Djordje Petrovic, and then he sent a shot just wide of the post.
In the end, Liam Rosenior's team held off their opponent's pressure and secured a victory that gives them a boost towards the European spots in Ligue 1.

'I'm ready to leave' - De Zerbi threatens to quit MarseilleMarseille's struggles at home in Ligue 1 continued against Auxerre on Friday
with Roberto De Zerbi now considering his future at the club.Roberto De Zerbi has sensationally threatened to quit Marseille just over four months after joining the Ligue 1 side following their 3-1 home defeat to Auxerre on Friday.
Mason Greenwood's 65th minute penalty proved to be a consolation after Lassine Sinayoko, Gaetan Perrin and Hamed Traore had the visitors three goals up at the break.
Marseille trailed a league game by a three-goal deficit for the second time this season
against Montpellier back in August 1998
Despite Marseille sitting second in Ligue 1
they find themselves six points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain
who can extend their lead at the top against Angers on Saturday
De Zerbi's struggles have come at the Velodrome this season
winning just one of his five home league games in charge
Only Anges and Montpellier (four) have picked up fewer points on home soil this term than Marseille (five).
Marseille's latest defeat saw them lose two consecutive Ligue 1 home games for the first time since February 2023
They also lost to a newly promoted side while conceding at least three goals for the first time in the league since a 3-1 defeat to Nimes in August 2018
leaving De Zerbi furious at full-time.
I'll leave the money and hand back my contract," De Zerbi said. "I came to Marseille for the Velodrome
"And I can't get the players to give here what I see in training and in away games
I want to be able to pass on to the people who work with me what I think about football
The Mediterranean is a “mirror of the world” and “bears within itself a global vocation to fraternity
the only way to prevent and overcome conflict.”
These words were among the highlights of Pope Francis’ long address on Saturday morning at the closing session of the week-long Mediterranean Meetings at the Palais du Pharo in Marseille
which was attended by the President of France
over 120 representatives of Churches and young people from the five shores of the Mediterranean Sea shared the current political
and environmental challenges of the region
with a special focus on the current migration crisis
Recalling the distinctive cosmopolitan character of Marseille
a “tide of peoples” that “has made this city a mosaic of hope
with its great multi-ethnic and multi-cultural tradition”
reflecting the many civilizations of the Mediterranean
Pope Francis articulated his reflection around three aspects that characterize the southern French city: the sea
He noted that the intertwining of conflicts between different civilizations
religions and visions in the region we hear so much about today must not make us forget that what the Romans used to call mare nostrum (our sea) has been for millennia “a place of encounter: among the Abrahamic religions; among Greek
philosophy and law; and among many other realities.”
echoing the words of the now Venerable late mayor of Florence
who inspired the Mediterranean Meetings initiative
the Mediterranean is “the beginning and foundation of peace among all the nations of the world”
similar to the Sea of Galilee where Jesus proclaimed the Beatitudes
“urges us to oppose the divisiveness of conflicts with the coexistence of differences” and at the same time “brings together the challenges of the whole world” today
"Amidst today’s sea of conflicts," he said
"we are here to enhance the contribution of the Mediterranean
so that it can return to being a laboratory of peace
to be a place where different countries and realities can encounter each other on the basis of the humanity we all share
and not on the basis of contrasting ideologies."
For the Mediterranean “to return to being a laboratory of peace” in the world
amidst “today’s sea of conflicts” and resurgent "belligerent nationalisms"
as Jesus did on banks of the Sea of Galilee
from the often silent cry of the least among us” who are not numbers but faces
“The change of direction in our communities lies in treating {the poor} as brothers and sisters whose stories we know
not as troublesome problems; it lies in welcoming them
not evicting them; in giving them dignity. ”
Noting that “the sea of human coexistence is polluted by instability” even in European cities like Marseille
Pope Francis once again insisted on the urgent need for more solidarity even to prevent lawlessness
"the real social evil is not so much the increase of problems
but the decrease of care” for the most vulnerable: young people who are easy preys of crime
people enduring violence and injustice in Africa and the Middle East
migrants losing their lives as they attempt crossing the mare nostrum
which has become a "mare mortuum (a dead sea
Reflecting on the second feature of Marseille
a big port city open to the sea with a story of immigration and emigration
Pope Francis decried the fact that several other Mediterranean cities have closed their ports to quench fears of a supposed “invasion” of migrants
"those who risk their lives at sea do not invade
he remarked that “the phenomenon of migration is not so much a short-term urgency
always good for fuelling alarmist propaganda
a process that involves three continents around the Mediterranean and that must be governed with wise foresight.”
with the poorer countries of the South “plagued by instability
wars and desertification” turning to the wealthier North
Again, the problem of ever-growing disparities between the haves and have-nots is not new, as the Church has been saying for decades, the Pope said recalling Pope St. Paul VI's Encyclical "Populorum Progressio".
Pope Francis acknowledged “the difficulties involved in welcoming
promoting and integrating unexpected persons."
“the principal criterion cannot be the preservation of one’s own well-being
but rather the safeguarding of human dignity.”
He reiterated that in the face of the scourge of the exploitation of human beings
“the solution is not to reject but to ensure
an ample number of legal and regular entrances” of migrants
in cooperation with their countries of origin
He further undercores the crucial importance of integration in the hosting countries
"An assimilation that does not take into account differences and remains rigidly fixed in its own paradigms only makes ideas prevail over reality and jeopardizes the future
increasing distances and provoking ghettoization
which in turn sparks hostility and forms of intolerance," he said
Recalling that the port of Marseille is also a “door of faith”
Pope Francis went on to remark the duty of Christians to witness the Lord’s preference for the poor and the Gospel of charity and fraternity
citing the example of Saint Charles de Foucauld
but also of all those agents of charity in our own day
Referring to the last image of the lighthouse
Pope Francis underscored the need for the Mediterranean Churches of finding “cooperative ways forward” to address the challenges of the region
he suggested considering also the expediency of a Mediterranean Bishops’ Conference “that could offer greater possibilities for regional dialogue and representation”
and “to work towards a specific pastoral plan" on the issue of migration so that those dioceses that are most exposed can provide the best spiritual and human assistance to migrants in need
He then pointed to the role of young people as “a light that indicates the way of the future” in the Mediterranean
underlining again the crucial importance of education to help surmount barriers and overcome preconceptions
He drew attention in particular on universities “as laboratories of dreams” and of this future
where young people mature “by encountering one another
and discovering cultures and contexts both near and diverse.”
wounds are healed and fundamentalist rhetoric is rejected”
adding that the Church can certainly contribute to this by offering her educational networks and encouraging a "creativity of fraternity"
Pope Francis called for a “Mediterranean theology”
capable of developing ways of thinking “rooted in reality”
He said a "laboratory doesn't work"
and urged everyone “to unite generations by linking memory and future
and promoting with originality the ecumenical journey of Christians and dialogue between believers of different religions”
so as to prevent all violent and instrumental misuse of religion
Pope Francis concluded his speech with an appeal for a better Mediterranean region
in order to confront the poverty of today in solidarity and cooperation," he said
in order to embrace all those who seek a better future; be a lighthouse of peace

Apr 9 (EFE).- At least five people have sustained serious injuries after a four-story apartment building in Marseille collapsed
warning that the number of casualties is expected to rise as efforts to locate survivors continue
The building in the center of the southern French city collapsed shortly after midnight and also affected neighboring buildings
“We think there are between four and 10 people under the rubble,” said French interior minister Gérald Darmanin at the scene
French prime minister Élisabeth Borne and president Emmanuel Macron sent messages of encouragement to the victims
where a building on Rue de Tivoli collapsed last night
My thoughts are with the people affected and their families
The search continues with significant means deployed
Thanks to the firefighters and emergency services mobilised,” Macron said on Twitter
The main hypothesis is that the collapse was caused by an explosion
“We must prepare for casualties,” Marseille mayor Benoît Payan told reporters
The collapse has affected 33 residents of the city
Five of them are in a state of “relative seriousness”
and another elderly person had to be treated for shock
Rescue work at the site is being hampered by a fire in the rubble
Authorities have acknowledged that the work would take several hours
The incident has sent shockwaves through Marseille
a city that has already suffered the collapse of two buildings in 2018
Those events also uncovered a serious housing crisis due to the poor state of many of the city’s buildings
leading to more than 4,000 residents being relocated
Ademola Lookman, Matteo Ruggeri and El Bilal Touré scored in Atalanta’s 3-0 win over Marseille for a 4-1 aggregate victory in their Europa League semi-final. The Italian side will meet Bayer Leverkusen, who overcame Roma
Lookman put Atalanta ahead in the second leg on the half-hour with a long-range strike past Pao López before setting up Ruggeri to double the lead seven minutes after the break.
with Gianluca Scamacca and Davide Zappacosta threatening
put the final seal on the victory with their third four minutes into added time
“My first goal in Bergamo is a very big emotion,” Ruggeri told SkySports Italia
“Now we can dream with our eyes open that we’re in the final
It’s a moment to celebrate with our people.”
Atalanta are aiming for a trophy double as they also face Juventus in the Italian Cup final on Wednesday
with their 1963 Coppa Italia triumph being their only major silverware
said of the Dublin final: “It will be a historic occasion for a team like ours who don’t have the numbers [of fans] to win
It’s really incredible but it bodes well for everyone
it seems that you have to have Super Leagues
Football is beautiful because of meritocracy

Atalanta are fifth in Serie A and also have their sights set on a Champions League qualifying spot via the domestic league
They face a showdown at home to sixth-placed Roma on Sunday
Roberto De Zerbi has offered to leave his position as Marseille head coach if he is deemed to be “the problem” behind the club’s struggles at home
Marseille currently sit second in the Ligue 1 table but defeat to newly-promoted Auxerre left De Zerbi’s side six points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain having played a game more
They have won only once at the Stade Velodrome this season with the 3-1 reverse on Friday night a second defeat in succession in front of their own fans
I’ll leave the money and hand back my contract,” De Zerbi said after the game in quotes reported by Reuters
The Italian only joined the French club at the end of June.
And I can’t get the players to give here what I see in training and in away games
It's now or never for De Zerbi - he must succeed at Marseille if he wants an elite job
De Zerbi departed Brighton by mutual consent at the end of the 2023-24 campaign with former St Pauli head coach Fabian Hurzeler later confirmed as his successor
The Athletic reported the irreconcilable differences between De Zerbi and owner-chairman Tony Bloom about how the club should operate in the transfer market as the key issue that led to his departure
Before joining Marseille, De Zerbi held discussions with Manchester United regarding the possibility of replacing Erik ten Hag. He was also considered an unlikely candidate to succeed Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea
Marseille are next in action away at Lens on November 23

Sep 23 (EFE).- Thousands of people lined Marseille’s Avenue du Prado on Saturday to seize the “historic” opportunity to see Pope Francis
They applauded and cheered as he passed amidst Vatican
Despite the intense sun and amidst a robust security presence
Francis crossed part of the city in the popemobile
Approximately 50,000 people awaited him to lead a mass that marked the culmination of the third edition of the Mediterranean Encounters
and the French government specifically to allow those without tickets to participate in the event due to high demand
According to estimates from local authorities
around 100,000 people lined the route to the stadium
historic,” said a Marseille resident of Spanish origins
who attended the event with her entire family
including her 19-month-old great-granddaughter
giant screens had been set up to broadcast the mass live
“He is a personality who brings us only good things
It’s about everything,” said another enthusiastic Frenchwoman from the neighboring city of Aix-en-Provence
She carried small white and yellow flags and had the French tricolor on her head
Another flag seen was the white one with the blue cross of the city of Marseille
a symbol of the historic visit to the “phocian city.”
This visit marked the first time a pope had visited the major French gateway to the Mediterranean since 1533
Francis arrived in Marseille yesterday to conclude the third edition of the Mediterranean Meetings
which had been in its third edition since the previous Sunday
brought together bishops from around thirty countries and young people of different nationalities to foster communion among the believers of the Mediterranean region
The Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde was Francis’ first stop to lead a prayer and pay tribute to those missing at sea
as the migration crisis in the Mediterranean was the central focus of the message Francis conveyed from Marseille
“The Mediterranean has transitioned from being the cradle of civilization to the tomb of dignity
It represents the stifled cry of migrant brothers and sisters,” he stated on Saturday in the auditorium of the Palais du Pharo at the forum’s closing
with the presence of religious figures from across the Mediterranean and French political personalities
he departed in the popemobile for the Velodrome

More than 50,000 people have signed a petition to ban polluting cruise ships from Marseille
The French city is one of Europe’s busiest cruise ports
attracting nearly 2 million passengers per year
mayor Benoît Payan launched a petition to prohibit the most polluting ships from stopping over
“The Mediterranean is slowly dying but the giant cruise ship lobbyists want to continue to defile it,” he tweeted last month
“In Marseille
more than 52,000 people have signed the petition to stop the Mediterranean from ‘suffocating.’
Shipping accounts for roughly 10 per cent of air pollution in Marseille
a study by air quality monitoring group Atmosud revealed that emissions from cruise ships exceeded car emissions in the city
"A ship docked for an hour in Marseille is the equivalent of 30,000 vehicles travelling at 30 km/h in Marseille
The impact of pollution differs depending on weather conditions
meaning an impact that is moving and that is defined by the wind direction,” Piga explains
“When we are in this plume of pollution
and particulate matter can have insidious health consequences
Michèle Rauzier has lived in the port area for many years - and seen the impact of the pollution first hand
“In this neighbourhood we have healthy people in good shape - not smokers - who have died from respiratory cancers
Marseille is not the only city hitting back at air pollution from cruises
In 2021, Venice banned large cruise ships from its lagoon. Earlier this year, Barcelona announced that it would levy a ‘pollution tax’ on cruise tourists
But in Marseille
local maritime unions have concerns about the campaign to regulate the industry
The city’s economy is heavily dependent on cruise liners
president of the UMF (Maritime and River Union of Marseille Fos)
"Marseille is very popular - restaurant owners were telling me just a few days ago that there has been 20 per cent more business since cruise passengers and crew members came back,” he says
the cruise industry contributed about €350 million per year to the local economy
Mistre insists that ‘green’ cruise technology is making the industry more eco-friendly
But anti-cruise collective ‘Stop Cruises’ disagrees
We think that this industry is structurally incompatible with our world,” says activist Rémy Yves
“We can look for greenwashing and adaptation solutions, [but] in reality we are going to have mass tourism that is completely against everything
in terms of the consumption of resources.”

as blaze under rubble hampers rescue efforts in French city
Two bodies were found in the rubble of a building that collapsed in Marseille following a major explosion
as rescue workers scrambled to find at least six people still unaccounted for
The discovery of the bodies came about 24 hours after the blast brought down the four-storey building in the Mediterranean port city in southern France.
Emergency workers had continued rescue operations through Sunday night into the early hours of Monday with the help of a crane and lights, but a persistent fire underneath the rubble hampered their work, making it difficult for firefighters to deploy sniffer dogs.
“Given the particular difficulties of intervention, the extraction [of the bodies from the site] will take time,” the fire department said in a statement announcing the bodies had been found.

local prosecutor Dominique Laurens said eight people “were not responding to phone calls”

The cause of the explosion is still to be determined

More than 100 firefighters were battling the blaze in the ruins of the building
which was believed to have one apartment on each floor

“Not all the people who were supposedly inside … have been seen

Eight were killed in Marseille in 2018 when two dilapidated buildings in the working-class district of Noailles caved in. It cast a harsh light on the city’s housing standards
with aid groups saying 40,000 people live in shoddy structures
But authorities appeared to rule out structural issues in the latest collapse
in a neighbourhood known for its bars and nightlife
“There was no danger notice for this building
and it is not in a neighbourhood identified as having substandard housing,” said Mirmand

rational-modernist centerpiece had been added richard rogers partnership’s first realized airport
a project dating from the late 1980’s
this competition for the extension of the marseille airport reflects the terminal’s need to anticipate significant growth in passenger numbers as well as an ambition to place the airport and the region it serves more clearly on the international map
aerial view of the new terminal 1 ‘heart’ and of the proposed new pier
to revisit one of the earlier projects and consider how best to complete and make coherent an incomplete architectural ensemble currently composed of buildings of very different and distinctive styles
reflecting each respective era’s varying attitudes to air travel and terminal design
in the continuity of the new ‘heart’
the approach adopted by rogers stirk harbour + partners was one based on careful insertion. the proposal sought to pay homage to the existing architecture and contribute to the creation of a new identity for the airport whilst also delivering a cohesive
harmonious whole in which old and new complete each other rather than compete
the architects achieved this by clearly articulating and aligning the different volumes proposed; by extending the roofline of the pouillon building as well as the grid and rhythm of the façade — by seeking to complete and reveal the original rogers structure that constitutes the airside identity of the current terminal and carefully repairing the existing fabric where required
the new ‘heart’ reconciles the rationalist rhythm of the hall pouillon with the lightweight
unites the passenger processes within a flexible
privileging functional clarity and fluid passenger movement as well as offering operational flexibility
the architects aimed to declutter spaces and reveal the qualities of the existing buildings lost as a consequence of aggregated piecemeal interventions
RSHP’s proposal reorganizes and unifies the check-in halls
clarifies the baggage claim hall into a single volume
adaptable platform for security screening and retail organized around a linear plaza
the social hub at the center of the new terminal
the proposed restructuring locates departures in the existing pouillon hall and arrivals in the new heart
and to the legibility and separation of the passenger flows
a single roof design serves to the link the new heart with the proposed new pier under a fluid
environmentally-intelligent ‘flying carpet’
the landside elevation: a new shop-window in the marseille provence airport
building on the team’s experience of other environmentally-ambitious airport buildings
notably rogers stirk harbour + partners’s current lyon and geneva projects
the competition entry targets french HGE certification
in addition to the upgraded mechanical and control systems
this is achieved architecturally through a combination of passive measures including a timber roof structure
the roof serves as support to a field of solar photovoltaic panels and houses a carefully disposed array of rooflights
the system proposed is constituted of modular pre-assembled cassettes in a fine grid that can be arranged in configurations that are adapted to the specific requirements of each space and function
the roof design also gives directionality to the building aiding way-finding
unobstructed views and daylight whilst also carefully controlling solar gains
the ‘flying carpet’ oversails the original richard rogers-designed gate lounges
the new arrival hall in particular is conceived of as a startlingly transparent shop-window onto the airport
the proposed interiors express both warmth and lightness: the building’s palette combines natural timber
concrete finishes along with fine touches of bright color echoing the skies of provence and the mediterranean
so characteristic of this beautiful corner of the south of france
the project represents 70,000 square meters of new build in addition to the refurbished
repurposed or reorganized areas within the existing
the arrivals hall in the new ‘heart’: an extension to the existing hall pouillon
the central square is bounded by retail and overlooked by a generous terrace
the pier at departures level offers intuitive way-finding and generous
an environmentally-intelligent timber roof that oversails the original boarding gate lounges

Olympique de Marseille have unveiled their new third kit for 2009/10

Whilst it may start off familiar to some of the current adidas templates
this new shirt certainly takes the style into it's own with a cool combination of graphite grey and Olympique blue

As ancient Greek port, traditional rebel and contemporary French starlet, the beguiling city of Marseille has a hypnotic mashup of urban grit and grandeur – the rough-cut diamond on a coastline bejeweled with tranquil fishing villages and natural beauty spots
its museum offering is equally bold and eclectic
In keeping with the city’s socialist spirit, several musées are free and take visitors to less-explored neighborhoods where Marseille’s working-class heart beats loud and clear. At municipal-run museums

Greenwood spent last season on loan at Getafe and has not played for United since being suspended by the club in January 2022 after being arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and assault
The 22 year-old was subsequently charged with attempted rape
engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm
the charges were later dropped due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and "new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction"
Marseille is said to be interested in taking Greenwood away from Old Trafford
with reports suggesting an initial loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer worth in the region of £27million
Newly appointed Marseille manager De Zerbi says he will defend Greenwood as he would any other player if the one-cap England international joins
"Mason is a world-class player but we have not recruited him yet," De Zerbi said
"I don't know what happened but I am not used to get involved in my players' private life
you have to know that I treat all my players like my sons
"I can tell them off in private but I would never attack them in public."
Valencia has reportedly also placed a bid for the Man Utd attacker
Atletico Madrid and Juventus are said to be monitoring the situation
Greenwood scored eight goals while on loan at Getafe last season
scoring twice in the 3-1 Champions League win at Olympique Marseille
The former Manchester United forward, who returned earlier this month following two months out with an ankle problem, tormented the Marseille defence throughout
"Cristiano Ronaldo was the best player on the pitch," said Zinedine Zidane
now an adviser to Real's president Florentino Pérez
put the Spanish side in front after only five minutes
firing a fine 30-yard free-kick into Steve Mandanda's top corner
He wrapped up the win with 10 minutes left after pinching the ball from the Marseille keeper before coolly slotting home
"We know he is a great player and a great professional," Real's coach Manuel Pellegrini said
"I had already said he would not be affected by his sending-off last weekend in La Liga
He has this capacity to spring from everywhere and score."
Ronaldo had an odd weekend as he missed a penalty
set up another and picked a red card for a second bookable offence in a 4-2 victory over Almería on Saturday
The former Manchester United player was unstoppable at the Stade Vélodrome
twisting Marseille defenders inside-out on both flanks with his acceleration and some exquisite turns as Real finished top of Group C above Milan
the Portugal international insists he is still getting back to his best
I need to continue as I have been doing," he said
"This match will do him good mentally," said Pellegrini
"Too bad he will not be there for the Valencia game." However
who is suspended for the encounter with La Liga's third-placed side

"I didn't want to be sent off against Almería
I'm confident that my team-mates will do very well in Valencia," he said

where a mirrored ceiling reflects crowds and water
Parts of the city's seawall have been opened to the public and decorated with artworks
sets out to be the grandest and most dazzling
the millennia of beauties and horrors of the sea that stretches from Beirut to Gibraltar
and there are noble promises to create "an exchange of perspectives"
It could be a melange of everything and nothing
a case of mixing all the colours and ending up with mud
of serving vague political ideals at the expense of curatorial direction
It's a trap into which the museum's administration (who were represented at last week's launch by 12 white men sitting in a row
with two women attached at the end) have plunged with the fervour of maenads on Naxos
You pass from Franco Zecchin's mafia-themed photographs of Palermo to 1960s beach girls
to Byron at Missolonghi to a Candida Höfer photograph of the inside of the Louvre
to photographs of employees of the Ottoman Bank
Elsewhere there's a video inspired by Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People
in which the people turn on Liberty and butcher her
but wordy captions mean you lose the desire to find out
There is a note of colonial regret – to call it "guilt" would be overstating – and some wish to show that
when it comes to both destruction and creation
everyone is as good and bad as one another
A small room is papered with photographs of "shattered cities"
where the perpetrators of atrocities are Muslim
some more space is given to Sarajevo and Beirut
but if the aim is to make you reflect on these horrors
There are the germs here of maybe 30 decent exhibitions
and MuCEM has also taken over the rich collections of the former National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions in Paris
Sometimes they prick your curiosity or move your sympathy
But they gain nothing from being piled together like 1970s crockery and alarm clocks in a brocante
While touring the displays you are aware of something possibly more compelling going on
on the other side of gauzy curtains and glass walls
a "ziggurat" of glittering ramps wrapped around the cuboid containing the exhibition space
and then saturated with dappled shadows from a lacy screen in dark concrete
says it is "the rocky bottom of the ocean
From the top of the museum a bridge flies across the water to the historic Fort St Jean
from where another bridge connects to the rest of the city
making an urban promenade that connects the waterfront to the raised part of the town
may be too prosaic a way of describing the ensemble: for Ricciotti
it "expresses the existential question of architecture
It "touches the people of Marseille with its femininity and fragility"
but at the same time "relies on very powerful structural solidity"
The architects in Portsmouth didn't talk like this. Neither have they, as Ricciotti has, made a film in which he talks on architecture while his near-naked girlfriend kneels in front of him and caresses him extravagantly. ("A joke," he explains
a criticism of discourse.") Nor did they go off message
as Ricciotti does when he departs from MuCEM's notions of cultural interchange
Seeing a veiled Muslim woman in the distance
presenting beneath a mop of greying hair the mournful world-weariness of a disillusioned romantic
"I don't work in pleasure," he says
"I am very anxious." He combines shock with charm
and adapting his remarks to your nationality
"I fell in love with Lady Diana," he tells me
Of his building he continues: "It is like the body of an Ethiopian athlete
but it also has the flesh of a bather of Ingres." It resists "the terror of minimalism"
"very vulgar!" And there is indeed splendour in the dazzle of light
are built with exacting precision and would "explode" if there were any mistake) are impressive long monoliths of quiet force
But there is a disconnect between the magnificence of the wrap and the building it is meant to serve
The gallery block feels like an ordinary box
and although the project is in theory about porosity and flow
its internal circulation is cramped and stuttering
And after a turn or two of the square spiral of ramps
and I find myself heading to the escape stairs
I have higher hopes of another Marseille project, Mamo, where the locally raised, Paris-based design prodigy Ora-Ïto has restored the derelict gymnasium on the roof of Le Corbusier's majestic Unité d'Habitation of 1952
starting with an installation by Xavier Veilhan that opens on Thursday – incomplete at the time of visiting
but it was possible to appreciate the airy modernist cave that is the original gym
as the building's concrete roofscape is already a work of art
But if Ora-Ïto activates this place and brings people to it
he will fulfil Le Corbusier's dream for Unité's roof
which was to make a public space in the sky

In the first of a series of favourite train trips
our slow travel expert retraces a countryside route to mark 50 years of the beloved rail pass
Observant Parisians at the city’s Gare de Lyon 50 years ago this month might have noticed a new type of traveller passing through the station
The well-heeled holidaymakers bound for the Riviera were there as usual
But now they were joined by the Interrail pioneers
all under 21 and more likely to be carrying backpacks than suitcases
taking advantage of what was promoted as a one-off opportunity: pay £27.50 to explore Europe by train for a month
In those days that freedom to roam was a privilege of youth
The first passes went on sale in March 1972
and the scheme was so successful that it became a regular offer and in time was opened to all
Interrail passes are popular with travellers of all ages and the pioneers of 1972 are now drawing pensions
Many of those spring travellers at the Gare de Lyon were en route to the Riviera, the older ones making a seasonal pilgrimage to Antibes, Nice, Juan-les-Pins or Menton. For the Interrail cohort, the journey mattered more than the destination, but would be all the better if at some stage they washed up in Saint-Tropez
newly propelled to prominence by the marriage of Mick and Bianca Jagger where the guestlist included Julie Christie and Brigitte Bardot
It is still possible to travel from Paris to the Mediterranean without recourse to the modern high-speed linesThe most illustrious daytime express to the Côte d’Azur was Le Mistral
with posh air-conditioned carriages (a rarity in 1972)
But this wasn’t for the lowly young travellers: Interrail wasn’t accepted on many premium French trains
So while the chic set sped south on Le Mistral (or the overnight Train Bleu)
the youths with rucksacks and Interrail passes relied on slower trains
demonstrating an enviable ability to sleep in overcrowded compartments – or even corridors – continued through the night to the Mediterranean
fast TGVs dash from Paris to Marseille in just over three hours
conveying both regular ticket-holders and Interrailers
For a modest supplement (usually €10 or €20) even the latter can nowadays speed to the Mediterranean in comfort
But it is still possible to travel from Paris to the Mediterranean without recourse to the modern high-speed lines and see something of the French countryside by following instead the classic PLM railway taken by the Interrail pioneers half a century ago
PLM is shorthand for Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée
and the route is doable with just one change of train
though some itineraries include additional changes at Dijon or Avignon
the posters that helped seal the Riviera in the public imagination
Though PLM had long been consigned to corporate history by 1972
the PLM route became a key artery for early pass holders
View image in fullscreenAn early Interrail ad from the 1970s
Photograph: Eurail (left) and AlamyTaking time for the ride southThe slower trains that still use the old PLM line out of Paris are not grand enough to command platform space at today’s Gare de Lyon
where there’s not a hint of Riviera romance on a dull November morning as I await the 07.33 to Lyon
but a humble French regional train with only second-class carriages
The train is comfy in a time-worn way and cyclists can take bikes for free
Its humbler pace affords more opportunities to engage with the passing landscape and get a feel for the distance travelled
View image in fullscreenStairway leading to Marseille’s Saint Charles station
Photograph: Pavel Dudek/AlamySoon we are slipping by the forests of Fontainebleau and following the Yonne Valley through pleasant countryside
we slip under the high-speed line just as a TGV dashes by overhead
we pass Tanlay and Ancy before skirting Mont Auxois
where Julius Caesar defeated the Gallic tribes
Then we drop down steeply to reach the Ouche Valley and Dijon
having seen a fine sweep of Burgundy grand cru vineyards
I alight in Lyon just as a TGV from Paris pulls in at an adjacent platform
That fast train has taken just two hours from Paris; my journey has taken five
Shouldn’t we all take time out for a journey where the pleasure of the ride isn’t eclipsed by the anticipation of arrival?Slow travel is about making the most of the travelling
Shouldn’t we all occasionally take time out for a proper journey
one where the pleasure of the ride is not eclipsed by the anticipation of arrival
That’s why I broke the trip with an overnight stop in Lyon
Next morning, it’s another four hours on a similar regional train to Marseille
following the Rhône downstream from Lyon and name-checking vineyards on the way
There’s Côte Rôtie and Condrieu on the far side of the river
Cement-grey skies give way to sunshine south of Valence
with Châteauneuf-du-Pape on the right and a distant view of Mont Ventoux far away to the left
The one-way fare from Paris to Marseille via this old PLM route is about €115
which makes those first Interrail passes seem a bargain
as a journey with frequent stops along the way
this route really is perfectly suited to Interrail
2022 is our chance to rediscover the exquisite pleasure of those slower journeys which were the backbone of so many early Interrail adventures
To mark 50 years of Interrail, a 10% discount on global passes applies until 31 March 2022. Book online at allaboard.eu
Mobile passes bought during this promotion can be activated for use anytime up to 11 months after date of purchase
Adult global passes valid in more than 30 countries start at around €225

Starting October 23 – and for the next two years – the two metro lines in the French city will stop running at 9:30 pm on weekdays in order to test automated trains
The decision is provoking an outcry from both city hall and users
By Gilles Rof (Marseille (France) correspondent)
NICOLAS VALLAURI / PHOTOPQR / LA PROVENCE / MAXPPP Robin Renucci was still reeling from the news; like every Marseillais
the actor and director (who has been director of the Théâtre National de La Criée for the past 18 months) discovered in the press that as of October 23
France's second-largest city will close its metro at 9:30 pm (as opposed to 12:30 am)
and not on evenings when the football team Olympique de Marseille (the local object of worship) is playing at the Stade-Vélodrome
according to the Metropolitan Transport Company (RTM)
the absence of (late) night trains will continue for another two years
and buses under the political leadership of the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolitan Authority (AMP)
assured that this was just the time needed to test the automated trains that are due to equip the network by 2025
"How will our audience and crews get home with shows that end at 11:00 pm
Why wasn't this information given to us beforehand
Why was there no consultation?" The questions raised by a flabbergasted Renucci have echoed those of many in the city
Since the Marsactu news website revealed the early closures on September 26
petitions with several thousand signatures have been springing up online
Some have accused authorities of enacting a curfew
Others have pointed to segregation between those who can afford an Uber or downtown parking
Those who have been around for longer have evoked a return to the pre-2013 era when the metro didn't run after 9:30 pm and tourists avoided Marseille

Liverpool failed to score in only one Champions League match last season - the encounter they lost against Marseille at Anfield last season
They exacted a brutal revenge, administering a 4-0 hiding in France which which went some way towards helping Liverpool become the top scorers in last year's Champions League with 29 goals

At least five people were injured and adjacent buildings were evacuated
A fire is preventing rescue teams from searching for possible victims
Firefighters stand next to a bulldozer moving rubble where a building collapsed in Marseille
NICOLAS TUCAT / AFP An apartment building collapsed in an apparent explosion Sunday in the French Mediterranean city of Marseille
with authorities warning there are likely to be fatalities as firefighters battled a blaze
The collapse of the building in the port city in southern France occurred around 12:40 am
damaging parts of the two surrounding buildings
Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan told reporters
"We have to be prepared to have victims in this terrible tragedy," Payan told journalists at the scene in the central La Plaine district
where over 100 firefighters were still getting the blaze under control and the smell of smoke hung in the air
The fire "is extremely difficult to control," said Payan
"The firefighters are judging minute by minute how best to put out this fire because there are potentially people alive inside."
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said on the scene that there were between four and ten people trapped under the rubble
"We don't know if they're alive or dead," he told reporters
adding that authorities were also yet to discover the cause of the "very large blast" that prompted the collapse
The intense heat as the building burns has kept search dogs from picking through the rubble
with Darmanin saying it would be "several hours..
maybe even longer" before the fire was out
"I am thinking of those affected and of their loved ones..
thank you to the firefighters and emergency workers," President Emmanuel Macron wrote on Twitter
Five people were injured in neighbouring buildings which were damaged by the collapse
and 33 were taken into care by emergency responders
It is unclear how many people were inside the fallen block – believed to have one apartment on each floor – at the time of the collapse
"Not all the people who were supposedly inside the building have been seen
families are worried," Housing Minister Olivier Klein told broadcaster Franceinfo

The streets around the collapsed building were cordoned off and choked with dust
Firefighters could be seen attempting to work their way through the building debris
"We are trying to speed up the (search and rescue operations) because time is of essence," said the commander of the Marseille marine firefighters
Rescuers' task has been complicated by the partial collapse of one of the adjoining buildings
where eight people had to be brought down by ladder after taking refuge on a roof terrace
Other buildings on the street were evacuated and their residents put up in schools
while an aid centre for people looking for missing family members or loved ones has been opened in a neighbouring district
"We have to be very cautious about what the cause was at this stage," said Christophe Mirmand
A late-night food vendor working on the street said "everything shook" during what sounded like an explosion
"We saw people running and there was smoke everywhere," said Aziz
who lives on a side street near the fallen building
told AFP the sound of the crash "was huge"
"It sounded like an explosion," said Gilles
Eight were killed in Marseille in 2018 when two dilapidated buildings in the working-class district of Noailles caved in
The accident cast a harsh light on the city's housing standards
"There was no danger notice for this building
and it is not in a neighbourhood identified as having substandard housing," said Mirmand
News broke this evening that Manchester United had accepted Marseille’s €27.6+€4 million offer for Greenwood

All that remained was Greenwood’s agreement
according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano
“Olympique Marseille have Mason Greenwood’s green light to the move as final details of contract/salary are being discussed,” Romano said
“Manchester United have accepted €30m package offered by OM
Final details on player side then done deal.”

United and Greenwood look to have got their wish to find a new club for the 22 year old by the end of this week
Serie A clubs Juventus and Lazio had appeared to be the front runners to take Greenwood on a permanent deal, but the Turin club cooled their interest, switching to another United star
Meanwhile Lazio were humiliated when they couldn’t match Marseille’s bid, with president Claudio Lotito trying to save face yesterday by saying he had another candidate who is “ten times the player” that Greenwood is
Valencia have also been credited with an interest in the player and were at one stage rumoured to have made a £25 million bid themselves
but the Spanish media never really corroborated the claims
