French giants Marseille have not been involved in European competition this season but such is their determination to get back onto the continental stage that coach Roberto De Zerbi and his players are already embarking on some foreign travel
De Zerbi has been dissatisfied with his team’s performances in recent weeks
even though Marseille are second in the Ligue 1 table with four games remaining
meaning they are on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League
They had suffered five defeats in seven games before last week’s 5-1 home win over bottom side Montpellier
and the five teams immediately beneath them in the standings are all currently within four points
That means 1993 Champions League winners Marseille
have no margin for error in their attempts to return to Europe
So Italian coach De Zerbi has opted for a typically Italian approach to focusing his players’ minds for the run-in
taking the squad away on a training camp — a “ritiro” in Italian
meaning “retreat” — to prepare for the season’s final furlong
De Zerbi and his squad jetted off on Tuesday of this week to Italy
They set up base in a five-star hotel in Rome and have been training north of the capital
in a small stadium on the banks of the Tiber
while also paying a visit to the Vatican on Wednesday
“We decided we would try everything as we attempt to achieve our objective” of Champions League qualification
said De Zerbi after the game against Montpellier
“It is not a punishment” for his players
“It is just a way to try to bring us together.”
They will be back in Marseille ahead of Sunday’s home meeting with Brest
“The only thing that counts is the match against Brest,” said president Pablo Longoria in a club statement
“The decision to go away on a training camp was taken collectively
at a time when every little detail can make the difference.”
Adrien Rabiot and the rest of the Marseille squad will hope a few days in the Italian sunshine can help spur them on as they attempt to finish as best of the rest in France behind champions Paris Saint-Germain
was the star for Saint-Etienne in a 2-1 derby victory over Lyon last weekend which came as a huge boost in their battle to avoid relegation
He was also at the centre of controversy as
Stassin was shown a red card for a nasty foul on Corentin Tolisso
The Lyon player was stretchered off injured
but the punishment was reduced to yellow following a VAR check
Former Anderlecht youngster Stassin signed from Westerlo in his homeland in August for a fee of around 10 million euros ($11.4m)
He didn’t score in any of his first 11 appearances for Saint-Etienne
but has now found the net 12 times in 16 Ligue 1 games since mid-December
That includes nine in the last nine matches
and Les Verts are hoping Stassin can keep on firing them towards survival
30 – PSG are still unbeaten after 30 games and are just four matches away from becoming the first team ever to complete a Ligue 1 season without losing
10 – Strasbourg are unbeaten in 10 Ligue 1 games as they find themselves in a group of six clubs separated by just four points in the fight for European qualification behind champions PSG
11 – Bottom side Montpellier have lost their last 11 games and will have their relegation confirmed this weekend unless they beat Reims

Marseille Makes a Comeback with Greenwood - Rabiot Duo Against Rennes in Ligue 1A goal and an assist from Englishman Mason Greenwood
led Olympique Marseille to a 1-2 victory over Stade Rennes at Roazhon Park
keeping their hopes of fighting for the title alive and moving them just four points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain
With five wins and one draw in their last six games
the team coached by Roberto de Zerbi is on the rise
The former Getafe player has become the top scorer in the competition
Marseille needed a comeback against the team managed by Jorge Sampaoli
who suffered their third loss in the last four games and is now just one point away from the relegation zone
goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli played a crucial role by saving a penalty midway through the first half
The penalty was awarded after Michael Amir Murillo of Rennes handled the ball
but the Argentine keeper made a fantastic stop against Arnaud Kalimuendo
The Rennes striker got his revenge right before halftime in the 43rd minute
capitalizing on a cross from the right by Assignon to open the scoring
Greenwood finished off a pass from Murillo to level the score
Greenwood delivered another brilliant play
sending a perfect aerial ball that Adrien Rabiot headed home to beat Brice Samba again
and Marseille secured a vital victory to stay in the race for the Ligue 1 title
A stunning left-footed strike from Mason Greenwood has taken the ex-Manchester United forward to 11 goals for the season at Marseille
Giantkillers Auxerre are flying high after a shock 3-1 victory over touted title challengers Marseille at the Vélodrome

A football club has the ability to put a town on the map. From a personal standpoint, revealing my Boltonian origins abroad will invariably elicit a reference to Bolton Wanderers; the town and the club are inseparable, indiscernible, especially internationally. Auxerre, a small village south of Paris, comprised of just over 37,000 inhabitants is the French equivalent.
It was Guy Roux, the inexhaustible former manager of L’AJA who put them there, winning a league title, reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League and winning the Coupe de France on four occasions across his 44-year tenure.
it took them 10 attempts to rediscover the top flight
they made a hasty return to the second division just 12 months later
but amid the financial difficulties hounding almost all clubs in French football
Christophe Pélissier’s men are defying those expectations
Bar Reims, Montpellier, Le Havre and Angers, all of whom did not spend a single euro in the summer, no team spent less than Auxerre in Ligue 1
Reports in France even indicated that the uncertainty over the TV rights deal forced the club to pull out of a deal to sign Ajaccio’s Tim Jabol-Folcarelli for just €2m
Le Havre and Angers all sit in Ligue 1’s bottom four
giantkillers Auxerre are flying high after a shock 3-1 victory over touted title challengers Marseille at the Vélodrome; the result
Auxerre have won four out of their first five games at their home ground
while securing victories against the likes of Nice
Having beaten Rennes 4-0 at home last week
they headed to the Vélodrome with a plan that
was straight out of Sam Allardyce’s playbook
L’AJA had just a quarter of the possession but scored three-quarters of the goals as they beat Marseille 3-1
with all of Auxerre’s goals coming in the first half
Just as Paris Saint-Germain did in Le Classique a fortnight earlier
who have shown a capacity to be more expansive
The goalkeeper Donovan Léon already had an assist this season and he got another one against OM
More than 58% of his passes have been launched this season
but like Allardyce’s “route-one” Bolton side
there is also a technical level in this side that allows for highly technical and efficient transitions
the football is frenzied but also fluid and precise
There is a secret behind Auxerre’s efficiency in attack
The former Liverpool and Marseille striker came through the ranks at Auxerre and rejoined the club as an attacking coach in 2023
just like I did when I was a player,” he told L’Équipe
followed by the control and shot from Gaëtan
referencing Auxerre’s second goal in the win over Rennes
View image in fullscreenThe Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi at full-time of the game with Auxerre Photograph: Christophe Simon/AFP/Getty ImagesCissé’s impact is clear to see: only Nice (bolstered by an 8-0 hammering against Saint-Étienne)
PSG and Marseille have scored more than Auxerre this season
It is a record that certainly challenges the perception that low-block
counterattacking football is an outdated and inherently negative style
If it continues to be adopted by many Ligue 1 clubs in the modern day
We had to cause them problems,” said Pélissier after the win
“You simply have to give confidence to the players with a gameplan and a strategy.”
It is a victory that lifts Auxerre to ninth in Ligue 1 and just one point behind the European places
Can Pélissier emulate Allardyce’s feat at Bolton and bring European football back
That may be a bridge too far for a club that merely set its sights on survival this season; that should – and will – remain the main objective
Free daily newsletterKick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football
But for a small village that has become synonymous with its football team
there is more than just nostalgia to fuel the fervour at Auxerre with the hope of brighter days ahead
It was a defeat to Auxerre that put pay to Julien Stéphan’s second stint as Rennes manager
Having replaced Bruno Genesio on an interim basis back at the end of last year
The former Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli is destined to replace Stéphan and he was in the stands on Sunday
He helplessly looked on as Les Rennais continued their dire run
whose league standing (10th) is now more reflective of their quality after three successive wins
Le TéFéCé had been in the relegation places and given their current standing just one point above the relegation place
Rennes are now looking over their shoulders
did not stick around long there; given Pablo Longoria’s talk of a “three-year project”
who himself has evoked a long-term future at the club
But if his comments after the defeat to Auxerre are anything to go by
and even accused the captain Leonardo Balerdi of “lacking balls”
“A season here is worth two or three in another club,” said Igor Tudor at the time of his departure from OM in the summer of 2023
De Zerbi has never lasted more than three years at any of his previous clubs
John Textor called on Lyon to “humiliate” local rivals Saint-Étienne before the first Rhônealpin derby in two years
there was also North American pride on the line
given OL’s American takeover and the arrival of Canadian ownership at Saint-Étienne earlier this year
edging to a slightly nervy 1-0 victory but they did nonetheless continue a fine run of form
which has seen Pierre Sage’s side lose just one of their last 10 games in all competitions
Paulo Fonseca will take the reigns at Olympique Lyonnais for the first time as the club travels to face arch-rivals Olympique de Marseille
Always a momentous game in the French calendar but one that has some extra spice considering Fonseca was courted by Marseille at the end of last season before he joined AC Milan
Fonseca watched over Lyon’s draw with Ludogrets in the Europa League during the week
The new head coach will likely make only a few changes from that side
The American midfielder Tanner Tessman will drop out of the lineup in favour of Nemanja Matic
who has been linked with a departure from the club this winter
summer signing Georges Mikautadze could be benched as Alexandre Lacazette returns to the number nine position
Fonseca will not be able to rely upon Malick Fofana who remains injured

Marseille Stumbles at Home Against Surprising AuxerreMarseille faced a tough defeat in Matchday 11 of Ligue 1
falling 3-1 at home to a surprising Auxerre at the Velodrome
the home side was unable to overturn the deficit
Auxerre's goals came from Lassine Sinayoko
Greenwood scored from the penalty spot in the 65th minute
Auxerre climbs to fifth place with 16 points
while Marseille remains in second with 20 points
awaiting Monaco's upcoming match against Strasbourg
RC Lens will be hoping to end their run of four defeats in a row as they travel south to the Stade Vélodrome to face Olympique de Marseille tonight
Lens’ season has taken a dramatic downturn since the end of a winter transfer window where the club sold Brice Samba
Will Still has the unenviable task of shoring up a defence that has shipped 11 goals in their last four games
and he will have to do this without several key players
he could look to a winter recruit to add some support
Juma Bah is likely to earn his first start since arriving in France on loan from Manchester City
A poor discipline record sees Still have to make do without four key players as Facundo Medina
Marseille close gap to Ligue 1 leaders PSG after comeback winMarseille kept their impressive recent form going to keep some pressure on the league leaders
with Nice also making big strides with a win.Marseille closed the gap to Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the Ligue 1 table to four points after earning a comeback win over Rennes on Saturday
Mason Greenwood was the spark for Roberto De Zerbi's side in their 2-1 victory as he both scored and assisted to turn the game around after Arnaud Kalimuendo's 43rd-minute strike
It could have been worse for Marseille though
as the Rennes striker saw a penalty saved by Geronimo Rulli shortly after the half-hour mark
It is the third consecutive spot-kick the Argentine has kept out of the net
Greenwood netted the equaliser on the stroke of half-time to give Marseille a needed boost at the break before then setting up Adrien Rabiot for the winner four minutes into the second half
Marseille have picked up 16 points out of a possible 18 since the November international break
though PSG will hope to extend their lead at the top once more when they face Saint-Etienne on Sunday
Nice moved into the top four after a resounding 4-2 win over Reims
though that lead was short-lived thanks to Junya Ito
who levelled the score again just six minutes later
Gaetan Laborde then scored on either side of half-time – netting from the penalty spot before the break
before getting a second in the 64th minute – to give them a commanding lead
Substitute Mamadou Diakhon gave Reims some hope as he pulled one back with a long-range strike
but Ali Abdi's late intervention restored Nice's two-goal cushion
leapfrogging Lyon in the process after they suffered a 2-1 defeat at Brest earlier on Saturday
Lyon failed to recover after conceding in the eighth minute
with Mahdi Camada following up his early goal by setting up Ludovic Ajorque later in the first half
Jordan Veretout pulled one back for Lyon in first-half stoppage time
but they could not follow it up with a second goal after the break as they were condemned to a fifth league defeat of the season.
Gerónimo Rulli Joins Olympique de Marseille!Olympique de Marseille announced on Sunday the signing of Argentine international goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli from Ajax Amsterdam
The club has not specified the duration or amount of the contract
who is expected to become the starting goalkeeper following the departure of Pau López
The Trio Real Madrid Is Preparing with Mbappé as the Star
starting his professional career in April 2013 at the age of 20
he played 180 matches and caught the attention of Argentine national team coach Lionel Scaloni
His international debut came in September 2018
winning the Europa League and playing a crucial role by saving a decisive penalty against Manchester United in the final
He will be joined in Marseille by Valentín Carboni
with his contract with the French club announced earlier this week

which has drawn pledges of 150 billion euros of private investment so far
“Thereby we aim to mobilise a total of 200 billion euros for AI investments in Europe,” von der Leyen told the Paris AI Summit
private sector investment announced by President Donald Trump last month for AI infrastructure
The ongoing AI Action Summit in Paris has added yet another aspect to the “growing India-France strategic partnership”

Prime Minister Modi advocates for global governance and standards for AI to uphold shared values and address risks
“India is building its own large language model considering our diversity
We also have a unique public-private partnership model for pooling resources like computer power
It is made available to our startups and researchers at an affordable cost
“India is ready to share its experience and expertise to ensure that AI future is for good and for all
But no one holds the key to our collective future and shared destiny other than us humans

“We must develop open source systems that enhance trust and transparency
We must build quality data centres free from biases

but history has shown that work does not disappear due to technology
We need to invest in skilling and re-skilling our people for an AI-driven future.”
“AI is developing at an unprecedented scale and speed and being adapted and deployed even faster
There is also a deep interdependence across borders
there is a need for collective global efforts to establish governance and standards that uphold our shared values
“But governance is not just about managing rifts and rivalries
It is also about promoting innovation and deploying it for the global good
So we must think deeply and discuss openly about innovation and governance,” said Mr

Marseille closes gap to Ligue 1 leader PSGMarseille closed the gap to Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the Ligue 1 table to four points after earning a comeback win over Rennes.Mason Greenwood was the spark for Roberto De Zerbi's side in a 2-1 victory as he scored one goal and assisted the other to turn the game around after Arnaud Kalimuendo's 43rd-minute strike had put Rennes ahead
It could have been worse for Marseille as the Rennes striker saw a penalty saved by Geronimo Rulli shortly after the half-hour mark
It is the third consecutive spot-kick the Argentinean has kept out of the net
Greenwood netted the equaliser on the stroke of half-time to give Marseille a much-needed boost at the break before setting up Adrien Rabiot for the winner four minutes into the second half
Marseille has picked up 16 points out of a possible 18 since the November international break
PSG will hope to extend its lead at the top once more when it faces Saint-Etienne on Monday (AEDT)
but the lead was short-lived thanks to Junya Ito
Gaetan Laborde then scored on either side of half-time
netting from the penalty spot before the break and grabbing a second in the 64th minute to give Nice a commanding lead
leapfrogging Lyon in the process after it suffered a 2-1 defeat at Brest earlier in the day
Jordan Veretout pulled one back for Lyon in first-half stoppage-time
but his side could not follow it up with a second goal after the break as it was condemned to a fifth league defeat of the season

PSG and Marseille lock horns in a fiesty top of the table Ligue 1 clash
Having brushed aside the reigning French champions in Coupe De France
Marseille will enter the contest high on confidence that he could replicate the result in Ligue 1 as well
The French club has 9 wins in 11 games since the turn of the year and could use their current form to upset the league leaders
A win against Christophe Galtier’s men would see Marseille cut the gap to PSG to just 2 points as they would look to further the pressure on the French giants
PSG have had a roller-coaster ride in their current campaign thus far
Looking like a strong team in France and in Europe
PSG’s train has fallen off the track since the World Cup break
Les Parisiens need to overcome a 1-0 deficit against Bayern Munich in Germany in the second leg of the Round of 16 fixture while Marseille are closing in on the reigning champions in Ligue 1
The main reason for this massive downfall has been PSG’s shaky backline as they are without a clean sheet in 7 consecutive games and could see the French title slipping if they drop points against Marseille
Les Parisiens face Nantes on the 5th of March and then travel to the Allianz Arena to face Bayern Munich on the 9th of March in the second leg of the Round of 16 match of the Champions League
Galtier's men then lock horns with Brest away from home on the 12th of March
France (AP) - Riot police again threw tear gas at rowdy soccer fans in Marseille's crowded Old Port on Saturday
just hours before England was to play Russia at the European Championship

PUMA and Marseille have launched three new kits
but don’t expect to see these on the pitch anytime soon; the ‘Influence Jerseys’
have been produced specifically for supporters
taking influence from both pitch and street in a combination of cultures
Having already unveiled Olympique de Marseille’s official kits for the 2019/20 season, including a special 120th anniversary jersey
PUMA have now launched three new "lifestyle" jerseys for Marseille fans
strong graphics and not a sponsor logo in sight; the impact of street culture on the design of the three shirts is clear to see
and it’s a sign of PUMA embracing the increasing influence of jersey culture on lifestyle circles
with all featuring the word ‘Marseille’ in a stylised font across the centre in place of a traditional sponsor
the OM badge takes up its usual place on the left of the chest
while the PUMA logo on the right of the chest is the only other hint of branding
The stylised font from the front is carried across to the number 13
which features on the back of all three designs
A sublimated triple diamond graphic is utilised across two of the designs
both of which take orange as a core colour
coupling it with black or white respectively
The other shirt features a navy gradient vertical stripe design that fades to a colouring that’s more familiar to Marseille’s traditional look
Behind the stripes is a splash effect print that accentuates the aesthetic
providing a look that would be as good on the pitch as it does off it
Pick up the Marseille Influence Jerseys from the club's online store
Drawing inspiration from the team’s connection with the fans
and then also their geographical positioning on the Mediterranean
PUMA launch the Olympique de Marseille 24/25 home and away shirts
Inspired by the elements and the people who have shaped the city's history
PUMA have revealed the 23/24 home and away shirts for Olympique de Marseille
Olympique Marseille have always shared a strong link with Africa
and that bond has given birth to the ‘OM Africa’ programme
that’s entirely dedicated to fans from the African continent
the club have launched three vibrant lifestyle jerseys
as PUMA launch the Olympique de Marseille home and away kits for the 2020/21 season
Arriving under the banner ‘Le cOMbat Continue’ the campaign embraces Marseilles fighting spirit on and off the pitch as they prepare for new challenges in the season ahead
Few cities can boast an identity as unique as Marseille
which is what PUMA and Olympique de Marseille are tapping into with their new “Faster Marseille” range
giving a nod to the vibrancy and energy that makes this area of the French coast special
Olympique de Marseille ended their season as so many teams seem to these days
debuting their new home shirt from PUMA for the coming 2019/20 season
The design pays tribute to 120 years of proud footballing tradition and the city of Marseille itself
For their first return to the Champions League since 2013
PUMA launch the Olympique de Marseille 20/21 third shirt
with a design that’s inspired by the hip-hop culture of the city
PUMA unveil the Olympique Marseille 21/22 away shirt

Much like the election of Donald Trump in America and Britain’s decision to leave the European Union
the rise of Marine Le Pen and the sympathy towards her far-right rhetoric among the French electorate has revealed a deep chasm in the country’s society
It’s a nation torn between patriotism and globalisation; one that’s suffered terrorist attacks and that’s struggling to deal with migration; one with a bloody colonial past behind it and a challenging future ahead
It is against this politically turbulent backdrop that we speak to emerging French fashion designer Simon Porte Jacquemus
for whom a love for France is at the centre of all he does
The day we speak is the eve of the French election and
and the designer speaks of his concern for his country as one might a sick friend or relative
“I am angry and upset to see the politicians using fear against the poor people,” he says sadly
Marine Le Pen using the fear of the stranger
It’s not a good moment for us.” While Macron has since won the election
abating the fears of France’s moderate and left
the nation remains riddled with problems: jobs
loss of faith in the political system and loss of identity – what it means to be French
is what lies at the core of Jacquemus’ eponymous brand
and of this exhibition and an accompanying new book of the same name – the designer’s first publication
It’s neither a nationalistic nor a Parisian Frenchness
however (the latter of which we’re very accustomed to
but a provincial one – one that speaks of his hometown
Having taken inspiration from the region since the very inception of his brand
the designer’s S/S17 collection was titled Les Santons de Provence and was inspired by the clay figurines local to that area
And while Jacquemus maintains that he is grateful to Paris
which he says has given him “everything” (he works and presents his collections there)
he admits that his heart still belongs to the South
“I need people smiling,” he says with a laugh
people who are more Mediterranean… I really miss that.”
people who are more Mediterranean… I really miss that” – Simon Porte Jacquemus
While for many of Jacquemus’ contemporaries in Paris’ emerging fashion scene – such as Demna Gvasalia and his collaborators at Vetements – nightlife is a key inspiration
drawing on the life and culture of Southern France
“Jacquemus is not about nightlife and clubbing and things like that
it’s more about fruit and vegetables and rolling in the grass,” he said in an interview with Dazed Digital last year
I love chips – I love all these simple things.” This translates to his designs which are characterised by their sense of fun and freedom
playfulness and poetry – garments are often asymmetrical
silhouettes oversized and make-up experimental
pushing a giant red ball down the runway; another
Jacquemus’ approach has been the same ever since he started his label at the tender age of 19
She was his first and biggest supporter – aged just seven or eight
he made a dress for her out of a beige linen which she loved
“She wore it the next day to take me to school and she said
“I think this was a strong moment for me.” When his mother passed away aged just 42
naming it after her and going as far to call the brand a “tribute” to her
saying that his collections are all connected to her to this day
So I had to prove that my clothes were enough good to be sold” – Simon Porte Jacquemus
news of “the beautiful boy from Southern France dreaming to do fashion” spread – a storyline that gave him a profile
“So I had to prove that my clothes were enough good to be sold.” In that
he has succeeded – along with critical acclaim
Jacquemus has experienced commercial success and is today stocked by nearly all the major high-end retailers
His label was also recently nominated for the LVMH prize – confirmation that the industry is taking him seriously
Jacquemus is very open: he has a vast audience on Instagram – over 280,000 followers at the time of writing – that he communicates with on a daily basis
And while some of his contemporaries maintain an air of elusivity
giving us an insight into his Instagram strategy
it’s about being spontaneous” – Simon Porte Jacquemus
The result of much hard work on Jacquemus’ part
the exhibition features the designer’s Les Santons de Provence collection (complete with those wide-brimmed straw hats)
videos and sculptures – one of which he created himself
Rather than being a retrospective of the designer’s work
the show strives to be an “experience” and succeeds in being a thoroughly intriguing insight into the Jacquemus universe
with over 1,000 photos and videos taken on his iPhone
including footage of his “little cousin running around in high heels
the shoes… The idea was just to be inside my phone because I work so closely with with [it].” Crucially
where he has been wanting to stage an exhibition for some time
“I’ve always dreamt of doing a show in Marseille for all the Southern French people
While globalisation has left many people in France with a sense of a loss of identity
Jacquemus demonstrates that national pride and nationalism needn’t go hand-in-hand
It’s a love letter to France – one that couldn’t have come at a better time

he was tasked with restoring OM to the glory it hasn’t seen since winning the league in 2009-10
brought with him his uncompromising style and unique philosophy that has influenced some of the world’s top tacticians
who called him “the best coach on the planet” in 2012
When Bielsa and Guardiola coached against each other in La Liga
Guardiola spoke of his intrigue at Athletic Bilbao’s almost militaristic sense of work rate
They don’t let you breathe,” Guardiola said
preparing in minute detail for each match and training session
speaking at length in press conferences and to his players
sometimes in the middle of a training exercise
he barks orders non-stop and demands 100 percent effort
focus and intensity from his players at all times
“A man with new ideas is mad — until he succeeds.”
Things didn’t look too bright at the start of the season, when Bielsa laid into the Marseille board and president Vincent Labrune
claiming he “made me promises that he knew were untenable.” This was early September and one of the few times Bielsa had spoken at length with the press
as is his level of meticulousness and his nervous tics
The madness and his method are inseparable
the players will do anything for him and defend him to anybody who will listen
“The workouts are intense but enlightening, technically and tactically,” leading scorer André-Pierre Gignac said
“He knows everything to the smallest detail
… I glanced at his training schedules: there are hundreds of them
Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone was similarly full of praise in his book
“He knows how to get the most out of each player,” Simeone wrote
Manchester City finds way through, Barca tops PSG in Champions League
Little squad rotation and no European competition helped Marseille develop impressive team chemistry in a short period of time
OM started the season with an away draw to Bastia and home loss to Montpellier; since then
it only lost to Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain
rattling off an eight-game winning streak that spanned two full months in league play
Marseille has scored 36 goals to lead Ligue 1 and sits tied for second with Barcelona among the teams in Europe’s top five leagues (Real Madrid is the runaway leader in that category with a staggering 51 goals in 14 games)
Bielsa was known for his radical 3-3-1-3 system with the Chilean national team and Athletic Bilbao
His Marseille team has played it on several occasions
but Bielsa has generally preferred a 4-2-3-1 in France
While the numbers in each line have changed
The most obvious characteristic of any Bielsa team is its work rate and concentration of numbers without the ball
It’s about creating favorable match-ups to win the ball back as quickly and as high up the field as possible
It’s about intelligent positioning as much as the work rate: midfielders match up one-on-one
which is why Bielsa has preferred playing four defenders to three in a Ligue 1 with speedy wingers and three-forward sets
Marseille responds to a series of triggers to press the opposition
The exact number is difficult to know without being privy to what a coach tells his team in the privacy of its training ground
but it’s probably a higher number than most imagine
“There are 36 different forms of communicating through a pass.”
OM’s defensive system seems chaotic at times
That sense of chaos plays into Marseille’s hands
as opponents can’t find time to build out of the back or connect simple passes through the pressure
instead having to hoof clearances that Marseille can latch onto more easily
If Marseille can regain possession in midfield or higher
and OM tries to play vertical as early and often as possible
as does attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet in the No
staying highest if Marseille retreats to defend in its own half
Marseille’s formation sometimes looks like 4-4-2.)
Champions League: Liverpool crashes out, Aaron Ramsey stars for Arsenal
All wingers on the squad — Florian Thauvin
Romain Alessandrini and Abdelaziz Barrada have played there the most this year — are dynamic with the ball at their feet and cover ground quickly without it as well
They provide support and service on the break for the central players
Thauvin has been the most consistent of the wide players
as Ayew and Alessandrini have suffered through injuries
Fullbacks Brice Dja Djédjé and Benjamin Mendy run the length of the touchline
They personify Bielsa’s requisite defensive work rate
chasing down second balls and tackling ferociously before distributing to the players in front of them and sprinting to join the attack
It’s important to note that the vertical nature of Marseille’s attacks doesn’t mean it plays hopeful long balls
OM is tied for second in Ligue 1 in both average pass length
If it has to retreat into its own half to win the ball
The double pivot of Mario Lemina and Giannelli Imbula controls the middle of the field effectively
and goalkeeper Steve Mandanda is comfortable playing passes of all lengths and difficulties from the very back
with Imbula dropping just ahead of the center backs
and the two creative midfield players fill in gaps between the three forward-most players
Inside the SuperClubs: Bayern Munich
Imbula, who played five games in France’s failed bid to qualify for the 2015 European Under-21 Championship, has proven to be OM’s most indispensable player in the back half of the team.
When he was unjustly sent off at 1-0 down to PSG in early November for an innocuous tackle, it effectively opened the team for a killer second goal to lose 2-0.
This Marseille team has shown more versatility and flexibility in its tactics than Bielsa’s past teams, when he would usually play the same shape and style no matter the opponent. The big question remains, as it does with all his teams, how long will the Bielsa effect last?
It’s a difficult style to sustain, as players can’t normally function at 100 percent intensity and effort for an entire season without risk of fatigue or injury. A Bielsaist would say the problem is not in the coaching, but that nobody is perfect enough to play the way he demands.
Bielsa has a two-year contract with Marseille, but he and the board got off to a rocky start, as he detailed in his September press conference. The revolution is proceeding much slower than he would like because he doesn’t have the totalitarian control he desires.
Just over half a season remains in the first year of the Bielsa Provençal experiment. Marseille is off to a good start, leading powerhouse PSG at the top of Ligue 1, but past indications are that the most interesting part of the season is yet to come.

Arsenal defender William Saliba has performed so well on loan at Marseille this season that a deluge of compliments has come his way – and Real Madrid are rumoured to be interested in his signature
After previous loan spells at Saint Etienne and Nice
Saliba was sent on his third loan spell to Ligue 1 in August – with the decision made by Mikel Arteta raising plenty of eyebrows amongst the Arsenal support
We’ve collected 11 amazing quotes from players
pundits and journalists that highlight the impact Saliba has made at Marseille this season
a former Arsenal player who’s taking Ligue 1 by storm for Montpellier this season
has questioned Arsenal’s decision to loan out Saliba for the third time
He had positive things to say about the 20-year-old central defender who he says simply: “How is this guy not playing at Arsenal?”
the 23-year-old forward said: “That guy’s a player
He’s hands down one of the best defenders in the league
“I think he’ll walk back into the Arsenal team next season
When I played against him last year I thought ‘how is this guy not playing at Arsenal?’
“Sometimes you walk off the pitch and think ‘fair play man
respect’ – the defender has kept up with you
“He’s one of the best centre-backs I’ve faced,” he added
“He’s the one that surprised me the most
I’m an Arsenal fan too and playing against Saliba I thought
we’ve got a very decent defender here.”

Speaking on Premier League Productions after Arsenal’s hammering at Manchester City in August
Wright was confused by Arsenal’s decision to loan Salbia out
“I’m supposed to believe that Kolasinac – someone that they’re trying to get rid of – is better than William Saliba?” he questioned
who is out on loan and apparently not at the [required] standard
“So if [Saliba] is not at the standard to play in this team – and Kolasinac can play – why have we bought him
Because if Kolasinac can play in front of him
The Arsenal defender graced the front cover of sports newspaper L’Equipe back in November 2021
The picture showed him at his most imposing
and the headline described him as the ‘rock’ of Marseille
The cover also described him as ‘indispensable’ to his side
underlining the impact he’s had in France this season

it wasn’t simple,” Sampaoli told reporters back in September after Saliba had made an eye-catching start at the Stade Velodrome

But when Arteta says he’s not ready for the Premier League
it irks a little bit because it’s a line that’s swallowed too easily
“The Premier League is very intense but Wesley Fofana slotted in easily at Leicester
“Last season it was all the more baffling because we were watching David Luiz
Pablo Mari and Rob Holding play for Arsenal
“If Arsenal had two or three exceptional centre-backs you could understand it
But last season I have no doubt Saliba could have done a good job for Arsenal
But Ben White has things he needs to work on too
he’s ready for the Premier League.”
Payet told L’Equipe (via Sport Witness): “The new ones have all brought something different
the one that impresses me the most is “Willie” (William Saliba)
Considering what he’s been doing since the start of the season
I don’t understand why he hasn’t played more for Arsenal.”
Payet has Premier League experience himself with West Ham and presumably knows what it takes to succeed in the division – and has identified Saliba in possessing the potential to achieve just that
speaking to Marseille’s official YouTube channel in October
said: “He has all the qualities to play in the Premier League
“I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t be in Arsenal’s team.”
The former midfielder was a Gunners and Marseille icon and his assessment of Saliba would have caught the attention of many people
is renowned for improving elite athletes’ explosiveness – and has previously worked with Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema
very hard working,” he told Football London last September
“We worked on a number of things such as speed
you know he’s a big guy also and he’s strong
“When you’re so young and you’re big and strong you aren’t as quick as the smaller guys
We worked a bit on that and he did really well
“When I first saw him I thought of Van Dijk because of his positions of plays and he has the right potential to make it far
“I know a lot of young players I can see that some get distracted when they come to Dubai but he was working hard and he’s got the right environment
Arsenal fans are annoyed right now because he’s not at the club and he’s doing really well in Marseille but I think last season he missed some games on top of COVID
Saliba needs to play more and he will come good
“He does not want to come to Arsenal and sit on the bench – that’s not his mentality
I think next season he will make a solid case for himself.”
a former team-mate of Saliba’s at Saint Etienne
is another player who cannot understand why Arteta loaned out his young defender
“I don’t understand how they didn’t even try him at least once,” he said last August
“When you observe him since his beginnings at Saint-Etienne… He’s calm
he’s got extraordinary footing and always gets out of it
he was good immediately when Nice were in bad form
He could have given something to Arsenal.”
“He is already a leader,” Nice boss Ursea said last season
“This assurance can be seen from the videos that we have watched with him and we can see it daily
“It is true that from the perspective of a young player who has arrived
to lead the defence like that already in the manner he has done is surprising
“You have to understand that this also surprised me
You get the impression that he has been here for a while
he is very interested in the game and he gives off a lot of maturity.”
“It’s worth noting that Marseille play in a very open style which makes it pretty difficult for defenders,” said Bairner
a French football expert and a regular contributor to Goal
has struggled to fit into the style and has been carried to some extent by those around him
At times he’s been doing the job of two
“He’s already a popular figure and when he has made mistakes – and there have been a couple of significant ones – these have been quickly forgiven due to him getting the team out of trouble on such a regular basis.”

Olivier Echouafni's side won 11-0 in the Classique against Olympique de Marseille in Week 13 of D1 Arkema at the Stade Jean Bouin
Olivier Echouafni's side were determined to continue their good run of form in front of the crowd at the Stade Jean Bouin
in a Classique against their rivals from Olympique de Marseille on Saturday afternoon
And they weren't disappointed as Paris Saint-Germain's women's team won 11-0

They only had to wait five minutes to see Les Parisiennes open the scoring. After an excellent team move, it was Nadia Nadim who found Grace Geyoro, who then beautifully set up Kadidiatou Diani (1-0, 5').With the handbrake off, the Rouge-et-Bleu didn't leave the Marseille box, creating chance after chance.
Dominating and full of motivation, the hosts went to town and delighted the fans who had travelled to the ground: Nadia Nadim got the second after she headed home a cross from Marie-Antoinette Katoto (2-0, 10'), before Nadim herself got the third goal of the encounter (3-0, 22').
From a corner, it was Formiga who scored the fourth (4-0, 29'), getting her very first goal in D1 Arkema. Before half-time, Diani (5-0, 32') Nadim (6-0, 37'), Katoto (7-0, 40'), and Diani once again (8-0, 45') continued to turn the screw.
Even though Christophe Parra's side showed better intentions in the second half, the unplayable Geyoro and Diani continued to torture the visitor's defence. Not content with an 8-0 lead, Paris Saint-Germain continued the goal fest in the second half. Diani got a hat-trick and it was then Katoto's turn to get her own matchball, when the number 9… scored the ninth goal of the match (9-0, 57').
An encounter dominated from start to finish by Les Parisiennes, and particularly marked by the debut of Brazilian winter recruit, Luana Bertolucci Paixão. It was down to Sandy Baltimore to bring the goals to an end, with a fantastic left-footed finish (10-0, 71'), and a perfectly timed effort to convert Katoto's pass (11-0, 79'). All of this and Christiane Endler didn't even face a shot on target.
Mission accomplished for Olivier Echouafni, whose side strengthen their second position in D1 Arkema, with just two points separating them from Lyon in first place.

An ownership tenure that began in 2003 is on course to end in 2022, with the Russian oligarch selling off assets as pressure grows following his home country’s invasion of Ukraine
The approaching end of Abramovich’s near-two decade tenure was confirmed on Wednesday with a statement expressing his thoughts on the ‘incredibly difficult decision’
