Les Phoceens have continued to gain an unwanted reputation for their issues on the road
Two camps who open Sunday’s showdown separated by just a pair of points
we have taken a glance at some of the most appealing Lille vs Marseille Bet Builder Tips

Eight players remain in contention for the 2025 ATP Open 13 Provence title in Marseille

is seeking a confidence-building run after a few disappointing events

Last Word On Sports is back with more action in our best bets column
It promises to be an exciting opening day of WTA Rome action
ATP Masters 1000 Rome 1/64-Finals Diallo – Giron: Time TBA H2H: first meeting Gabriel Diallo has won four of his last five matches
The Frenchman overcame Hamad Medjedovic 7-6 (4)
6-4 to successfully defend a title for the first time in his career
It is the Frenchman’s seventh ATP Tour title and his first for the season
with this win also marking the first time in his career that he has managed to defend a title
Humbert has improved his impressive win-loss record to 13-2 in Marseille as he becomes the first Frenchman to win back-to-back titles at this event
Title defence = COMPLETE 👏🇫🇷@HumbertUgo becomes the 1st Frenchman to go back-to-back in Marseille@Open13 | #O13Provence pic.twitter.com/qaQ85FPqH7
After a quiet 2024 during which he struggled to make much an impact on tour, Medjedovic’s ability has been evident across his time on court in Marseille – none more so than in the impressive manner with which he swept aside former world No 1 Daniil Medvedev to reach the final
he came out second best against a very impressive and dialled-in Humbert
a stat that proved particularly key in the second set as he remained unbroken
Humbert broke in the third game en route to 5-4 and an opportunity to serve for the opening set
But the young Serb struck back at the death to force a tiebreak
which ultimately went the way of the Frenchman 7-4
Another close stanza followed in the second
with the pair remaining locked on serve for the duration until the tenth and final game when Humbert pounced on a desperately loose service game from his opponent
Medjedovic delivered a double-fault to fall 0-30 down
with the scoreboard pressure appearing to have an impact as Humbert sensed the opportunity to make his move
breaking to love to seal the title and ensure he retained his Marseille Open trophy from last year
Medjedovic was gracious in defeat as he acknowledged the superiorty of his opponent today
so good luck for the future,” the Serb said
“I would like to thank my team for being with me
Unfortunately we didn’t win but thank you for everything
With three ATP titles now won on French soil
the importance of a home environment for Humbert is becoming increasingly evident
“It wasn’t easy because he played really
but I’m super happy to have my title back,” Humbert said following victory
it’s maybe the best title because I was a little bit stressed at the beginning of the tournament
“It means a lot to me because it’s in France
It’s so nice to be back in Marseille
they gave me the energy to win all four matches
Humbert is rapidly developing into a highly adept indoor hard-courter
with four of his seven titles coming in these conditions
as well as an excellent run to the final of the Paris Masters last autumn
The Frenchman’s trajectory is trending upwards
With a maiden title defence under his belt
and increasingly impressive hard-court results to use a solid base from which to build further
the 26-year-old’s stock is surely set to rise further in the coming years

13 American athletes in nine classes will take to the Bay of Marseille for competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics
following a shortened runway of three years due to the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games
Against a dramatic backdrop of rocky Calanques and the classic city of Marseille
athletes will battle for the podium on the biggest stage in international sport
will be able to follow the racing both live and on replay through NBC’s Peacock streaming service
starting at 6:00 AM EDT on July 28 (3:00 AM PDT) with the Women’s Windsurfing events featuring USA’s Dominique Stater
“We’ve had a fantastic final training block and settling period here in Marseille leading up to day one tomorrow
and I’ve been so impressed with the drive and work ethic that I’ve seen in each athlete,” said Marcus Lynch
USST High Performance Director and Paris 2024 Team Leader
“Athletes are dialed in on their programs and processes
We have an impressive support team of nearly 30 people spread across the discipline coaches and support staff backing them through 12 days of racing
It takes a village first to get here to get here and then to succeed
and I’m confident we have a great one on site in Marseille

65 of the best sailing nations in the world are set to compete in Marseille

After days of settling in the Team USA base
athletes are locked in and ready for racing that begins tomorrow
Paris 2024 is the third time sailing will make an appearance at a French Olympics
with previous competitions first in 1900 and then in 1924
it will be the first Games with events in Marseille

Paris 2024 will also make history: for the first time in the modern Olympic era
the games will have gender parity among athletes
with an equal number of male and female athletes on the field of play
having added the Men’s and Women’s Formula Kite events and shifting the 470 to a mixed event in order to achieve equality on the water
The US Sailing Team is entering this Games as the second-most successful Olympic Sailing Team in history
having won 61 medals since the inception of the modern Olympic Games in 1896
Will this year be the chance to close the gap and take back the title of history’s most successful sailing team
Covering all the action on NBC’s sailing broadcast will be veteran commentator Gary Jobson
who will be on the stream from 6am EDT to 1pm EDT each day
There will be two televised race areas per day
As the classes rotate through those two areas day to day
different athletes will be featured on the broadcast

GFFN editor-in-chief Luke Entwistle and GFFN’s Raphaël Jucobin face off in our Ligue 1 predictions competition
Who will come out on top at the end of the season
The international break perhaps came at the right time for Marseille
Roberto De Zerbi had reached breaking point after the shock defeat to Auxerre and he
Much work was done with the squad over the international break
even if they did allow their opponent back into the encounter
The international break has also allowed Valentin Rongier to work his way back to full fitness after a very significant injury lay-off
his absence was felt throughout last season
De Zerbi is pushing ahead with his plans for this side
trying to raise standards and improve cohesion
which he will be hoping to do this week during a special training camp away from Marseille
mostly due to the all-too-frequent individual errors
Monaco will be a much different challenge to Lens last week
are short of confidence and struggle to create and finish chances due to their injury problems in key areas
but the same certainly does not apply to Monaco
who netted three against Brest last weekend
Adi Hütter’s side have the ability to create a variety of chances from a variety of scenarios
be it working the ball slowly from back to front
hitting in transition from a low-block or forcing turnovers high in the opposition’s box
Finishing those chances has maybe proved slightly harder with Breel Embolo already missing nine big chances this season in Ligue 1
That is the joint-highest amount in France’s top flight
There is a chance that Folarin Balogun could be fit to start this encounter and should he be
he could make a big difference on the night
in a game that could – and should – be settled by fine margins as second meets third
GFFN | Luke Entwistle
Six matches are scheduled on day three at the ATP Marseille event – the Open 13 Provence in Marseille. It promises to be an entertaining day of tennis and, as ever, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match including Ugo Humbert vs Alexander Bublik
This is a battle between two French qualifiers who are looking to get their first win at the Open 13 Provence
Hugo Grenier is ranked outside the top 200 while 20-year-old
Arthur Gea is playing his first-ever main draw match and is ranked #306 currently
Grenier has been around for a longer time but doesn’t have much experience at the ATP level and hasn’t been performing well on the Challenger circuit either
Gea is on the rise and this would be a perfect moment for him to announce himself on the big stage
Lorenzo Sonego is off to a brilliant start in his first appearance in Marseille
defeating the dangerous Botic van de Zandschulp in three sets
Sonego made a high percentage of his first serves and was broken just once in the match
The Australian Open run seems to have motivated the Italian and he should have enough to win against Luca Van Assche
who got his biggest win of the season against Benjamin Bonzi in the first round but has struggled for consistency
who will play his first match since the Australian Open
The Russian was champion in 2018 and reached the semfinals last year
but Khachanov is yet to hit top gear this season and would be hoping for a deep run this week
Hamad Medjedovic had an easy first-round match and he won it convincingly
Khachanov is a significant step up in level and the Serb will have to play at his best to have a chance of winning
Medjedovic might win a set but Khachanov should prevail
Main photo credit: Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports
Seven first-round matches are scheduled on day two of the ATP Marseille – Open 13 Provence tournament in Marseille. As always, we at LWOT will offer predictions for every match on the slate., inclduing Alexander Bublik vs Richard Gasquet
Luca Nardi has shown improvement this season and is racking up match wins at the Challenger circuit
Reaching the final of the indoor Challenger in Koblenz earlier this month should help him on the fast indoor courts of Marseille
Daniel Altmaier made the most of the second chance in Rotterdam and got to his first-ever tour-level quarterfinals on indoor hard courts
That run should give a lot of confidence to the German player
there is a big difference between the court speeds in Rotterdam and Marseille and Nardi’s game is better equipped for the faster courts
Hard court is Benjamin Bonzi’s best surface
Bonzi’s sole ATP title has come on indoor hard courts
He is also a former finalist at the Open 13 Provence
where he defeated Luca Van Assche in the first round
He will look to repeat the same scenario here and hope for another deep run
Van Assche enters this match as a lucky loser
and his recent form does not suggest he will trouble the Frenchman
Zhang Zhizhen reached the quarterfinals in his only previous appearance in Marseille and will be looking to replicate or better that result
the Chinese player has struggled with draws
with four of his five losses coming against top-15 players
Quentin Halys is by no means an easy opponent
especially on fast courts but he is struggling with form and fitness as he had to retire mid-match in his previous match in Montpellier
but with his fitness in question and a tough opponent on the other side of the net
Stan Wawrinka is still in search of his first win of the season though he did come quite close against Daniil Medvedev last week in Rotterdam
Wawrinka displayed some vintage performance for a set and a half but faded after losing the second set
Maintaining a good level for a long time has been the biggest issue with the Swiss in the last year
Nuno Borges is playing some of his best tennis and will look to extend this match and make Wawrinka play a lot of balls
Wawrinka’s best bet would be to overpower the Portuguese and finish this match in straight sets
The fast courts will help him do that but only if he plays at a high level
I am leaning towards Wawrinka but won’t be surprised if he loses
ATP Masters 1000 Rome 1/64-Finals Nishioka – Struff: Time TBA H2H: 2-1 Yoshihito Nishioka has lost three of his last five matches
ATP Masters 1000 Rome 1/64-Finals Gaston – Jarry: Time TBA H2H: first meeting Hugo Gaston has lost three of his last five matches

Madrid… Europe is home to multiple cities with multiple major football clubs jostling for supremacy – but what about huge cities with only one team
Regularly described as sleeping giants at both domestic and continental level
these locations are home to some of the most passionately supported clubs in world football
We’ve trawled through population statistics and leagues across the continent to pick out the 13 biggest one-club cities Europe has to offer
ranging from the Mediterranean to deepest Yorkshire
France’s second-biggest city in terms of urban area
Lyon has a population of more than half a million – and a good chunk of them support their continentally renowned local team
Winners of seven successive Ligue 1 titles in the 2000s
Lyon have fallen from their pedestal in recent seasons but still remain one of France’s leading sides and are performing well in this season’s Europa League
With a population of more than half a million
Hanover is one of the largest cities in northern Germany – but it has just the one professional football club
While they haven’t been a force for some time
Hannover 96 were crowned champions of Germany either side of the Second World War and won the German Cup in 1992
The city hosted matches at both the 1974 and 2006 World Cup
but wasn’t selected for last summer’s European Championship
Perhaps that is down to their club’s diminished status these days
with Hannover currently eighth in the second tier and not having played in the Bundesliga since 2019
The key northern German port city of Bremen is home to one of the country’s most decorated football clubs
Multiple Bundesliga champions and German Cup winners – doing the double in 2003-04 – Werder also enjoyed European success in 1992
when they defeated Monaco to lift the Cup Winners’ Cup and reached the 2009 UEFA Cup final
Werder Bremen are currently sixth in the Bundesliga and share the record with Bayern Munich for the most seasons played in the German top flight
Malaga is enjoying a renaissance with its bars
museums and beaches proving the city is far more than an airport terminal on the way to Marbella
The local football team were Champions League quarter-finalists back in 2013
but were simply happy to be promoted from the nether regions of Spain’s third tier last year
a club that attracts plenty of British expats to its home matches
currently sit 10th in the Segunda Division and are three points off the promotion play-offs
Germany’s second-biggest club after Bayern Munich
Borussia Dortmund boast the country’s biggest stadium: the iconic Westfalenstadion
famed for the largest terrace in European football in the tifo-laden ‘Yellow Wall’
Bundesliga champions on numerous occasions
Champions League winners in 1997 and runners-up in 2013 and 2024
Dortmund have no rivals within the city itself but share a fierce derby with Schalke from nearby Gelsenkirchen
Dusseldorf lies within the most populous Rhine-Ruhr region of Germany
including England’s quarter-final win over Switzerland
But Fortuna Dusseldorf have been outside of the Bundesliga since 2020 and narrowly missed out on promotion last season
Despite the lure of Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen nearby
Fortuna averaged almost 40,000 fans last season and the potential is there for even more considering the club has previously won the Bundesliga and German Cup
Wroclaw is the third biggest city in Poland and hosted three group-stage matches at Euro 2012
The Polish League is arguably the most underperforming in Europe
with its clubs rarely making an impression in the Champions League despite Poland’s healthy population and love of football
and Slask Wroclaw are a prime example of that
Eliminated from the Conference League in the qualifiers
Slask are rock bottom of the league table and in grave danger of relegation
An embarrassing state of affairs considering the size of the city
even before you consider Slask were league champions in 2012
The fourth biggest city in Spain – having recently overtaken the population of Seville – Zaragoza is the capital of Aragon and will host matches at the 2030 World Cup
Local club Real Zaragoza are one of the most storied in Spanish football
but have been outside of the top flight since relegation back in 2012-13 and are in desperate need of modernisation
the club hold fond memories for English supporters of a certain age after beating Arsenal in the 1995 Cup Winner’s Cup final
Gunners fans were taunted with chants of ‘Nayim from the halfway line’ and the aim of Real Zaragoza chiefs is bring those days back to a fallen giant
READ: 12 of the best halfway line goals: Nayim Kane, Rooney, Rivaldo…
Italy’s fifth-most populous city, with over 600,000 inhabitants, Palermo is the capital of Sicily – the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.
With their famous pink shirts and having propelled the careers of Luca Toni, Paulo Dybala and Edinson Cavani, Palermo are one of Calcio’s most distinctive clubs but they are currently mid-table in Serie B.
Considering the current iteration of Palermo is a phoenix born from financial disarray in 2019, that is an achievement in itself – even with the grubby hands of City Football Group owning 20% of the club.
Nowhere in Yorkshire is home to more people than Leeds, but the city has just one professional football club.
Winners of every major domestic honour – including the First Division title on three occasions – and European Cup runners-up in 1975, Leeds United are one of the giants of English football but have spent the majority of the past two decades outside of the Premier League.
With Daniel Farke leading a promotion challenge in 2024-25, and plans to revamp Elland Road, Leeds fans can be tentatively hopeful of seeing their club thrive once more.
There did used to be two professional clubs in Amsterdam – but Ajax have been the sole one in the Dutch capital since FC Amsterdam disbanded in 1982.
Luckily for Amsterdam, Ajax remains one of the most iconic and decorated outfits in world football. The Eredivisie giants aren’t quite at their peak these days, but retain huge support and play in the ultra-modern Amsterdam Arena.
Only Paris has a larger population than Marseille in the list of French cities – and while the capital is home to a couple of professional clubs besides PSG, that’s not the case in the barmy melting pot on the Mediterranean.
Olympique Marseille (OM to the locals) are one of the most passionately supported clubs in Europe and remain the only French team to win the European Cup courtesy of their 1993 triumph over AC Milan.
The Stade Velodrome is an excellent, modern arena and the atmosphere is capable of making the most assured outfit tremble on its day.
Marseille is also an upcoming travel destination, with the city turning its reputation for grit and edginess into a positive. Well worth a visit.
Unlike the other major Italian cities of Rome, Milan and Turin, Naples has just one football club for the local population of 970,000 to rally around.
This probably explains why Napoli are one of the most fanatically supported teams in the world.
The club actually went bankrupt in 2004, only for film producer Aurelio De Laurentiis to save them and oversee an incredible rise back to the top that culminated in winning the Scudetto in 2023.
Home of Diego Maradona (and Scott McTominay) during his prime, Naples is a city that obsesses over football and Napoli is the object of that obssession.
The 6 managers Cristiano Ronaldo scored fewer than 10 goals under: Ten Hag, Solskjaer…
5 top footballers we can’t believe are still awaiting their first major honour
9 footballers who refused to celebrate after scoring against their former club
6 of the most infamous guards of honour in football history: Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd…
7 free agents we’d love to see in the Baller League UK

Serbian Hamad Medjedovic had little trouble handling No. 1-seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia, capturing a 6-3, 6-2 upset on Saturday in the semifinals of the Open 13 Provence in Marseille, France.
Medjedovic had zero wins against top-10 opponents before downing Medvedev, who sits at eighth in the world rankings. It took only 72 minutes for the 21-year-old to pull off the stunning victory, in which he collected seven aces and saved 3 of 5 break points.
France's Ugo Humbert, the No. 2 seed, will collide with Medjedovic in the final.
Humbert put together a straight-set win of his own, taking 29 of 35 first-serve points en route to a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Zizou Bergs of Belgium.
Backed by a supportive home crowd, fifth-seeded Argentine Francisco Cerundolo coasted to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Spaniard Pedro Martinez in a semifinal battle in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Cerundolo had eight aces while Martinez had zero, with the former also saving all seven break points he faced.
Joao Fonseca of Brazil is also headed to the final after prevailing 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-1 against Serbia's Laslo Djere. It was tied 1-1 in the third set before Djere completely collapsed.
No. 7-seed Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia wasn't bothered by a hostile environment and came away with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 upset of third-seeded American Alex Michelsen in semifinal action in Delray Beach, Fla.
Kecmanovic was down 5-4 in the first set but managed to rally back. He then raced out to a 3-0 lead in the second set to put Michelsen to bed.
Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the No. 8 seed, ousted Italy's Matteo Arnaldi, the No. 4 seed, 6-4, 6-4 in the other semifinal later Saturday.

Marseille earned a smash-and-grab 1-0 win at Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain after forward Florian Thauvin struck in the 31st minute of a pulsating though ill-tempered match that ended with a brawl that saw Neymar sent off on Sunday
the clash boiled over in the last minute of stoppage time with referee Jerome Brisard sending off five players after a full-scale fight broke out on the pitch

"VAR catching my 'aggression' is easy," the tweet began
"Now I want to see the image of the racist calling me a 'monkey motherf---er'..
The ugly scenes, however, did not bother Marseille manager Andre Villas-Boas after the 1993 European Cup winners celebrated their first league win against PSG since November 2011
"A tough and important win as well as a historic one," Villas-Boas told reporters after his side condemned last season's Champions League runners-up to a second successive defeat following a 1-0 opening-day setback at Lens
"We struggled to cope with PSG's early pressure because they are very good at it
but we found a way to grind out a great victory
Thauvin scored against the run of play, steering in a Dimitri Payet free kick inside the near post from close range after the home side had come close through Marco Verratti and Neymar
who also missed a pair of chances in the second half
Visiting keeper Steve Mandanda pulled off several superb saves before both sides had a goal disallowed for offside as the pace and intensity went up a gear after the break
Angel Di Maria's effort for PSG was ruled out in the 62nd minute and Benedetto's scorcher was also scrapped two minutes later as Thauvin
was marginally behind the last PSG defender

13-car entries for both GT disciplines at second-edition FIA Motorsport Games in Marseille…
The FIA has released a pair of 13-car entry lists for the two GT racing disciplines that will form part of this weekend’s second edition of the FIA Motorsport Games in Marseille
Two competitions — the GT Cup for two-driver lineups and GT Sprint for solo drivers — will be held at Paul Ricard as part of a multi-discipline
A total of 17 nations will be represented across the two GT disciplines
The GT Sprint is a new addition to the Motorsport Games roster
whereas the GT Cup formed a key part of the inaugural Rome Games held at Vallelunga in 2019
High-profile drivers in GT Sprint include factory stars Matt Campbell
Luca Stolz and Daniel Juncadella who are representing Australia
IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar GTD Pro champion Campbell will drive a Grove Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R for Australia in the 60-minute sprint race which closes the Games
Grasser Racing Team will run the Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo for Mirko Bortolotti’s Italian entry
continuing a partnership that achieved podiums in this year’s DTM
Vanthoor is piloting an Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II entered by Belgium’s national automobile federation the RACB
while Stolz and Juncadella are both behind the wheel of Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evos
ADAC GT Masters runner-up Ayhancan Guven will carry Turkey’s hopes of repeating its gold medal in the 2018 FIA GT Nations Cup
which was the precursor to the Motorsport Games
Guven will drive a Porsche 911 GT3 R after Turkey previously ran Mercedes-AMG and Aston Martin machinery for its national effort
Tristan Vautier is confirmed as France’s GT Sprint driver
while Stock Car Pro Series front-runner Bruno Baptista is leading Brazil’s challenge
Both will be competing in Mercedes-AMGs run by French squad Akkodis ASP
Baptista tested a GetSpeed Mercedes-AMG at Paul Ricard earlier this year
Morocco will make its Motorsport Games GT debut courtesy of an Optimum Motorsport McLaren 720S GT3 for Michael Benyahia
who has driven the British manufacturer’s 570S GT4 model around Europe
Baptista and Benyahia are among six Silver-rated drivers on the GT Sprint grid
The others are China/Hong Kong’s Marchy Lee in a KCMG-prepared Honda NSX GT3 Evo22
Chinese Taipei’s Evan Chen who is linking up with Ferrari outfit AF Corse
Swiss Mercedes-AMG driver Yannick Mettler and Lithuanian Audi racer Julius Adomavicius
The GT Cup entry also includes 13 cars with Australia
GT Cup pairings must be formed of a Bronze-rated driver and a Silver
meaning that the factory stars racing in GT Sprint are ineligible
Australia’s Brenton and Steven Grove will aim to improve on their 2019 bronze medal
while Rome silver-medallist Poland is back with a new lineup involving Karol Basz and Marcin Jedlinski who are sharing an Olimp Racing Audi
Recently-crowned British GT champion Ian Loggie will team up with Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS competitor Chris Froggatt in the British Mercedes-AMG
Ukraine’s entry in collaboration with German team PROSport Racing signifies the only Aston Martin Vantage GT3 in the field
Puerto Rico will make its Games debut with last year’s Lamborghini Super Trofeo Am world champion Victor Gomez and Francesco Piovanetti
Reigning gold-medallist Japan and the U.S. are notable absentees from the second edition of the FIA Motorsport Games, which was originally scheduled to take place in 2020 but experienced two postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic
The previous edition of the GT Cup at the Rome Games attracted a 22-nation entry
The GT Cup will consist of qualifying races on Friday and Saturday
establishing the grid for the 60-minute medal race at 2:15 p.m
with two 40-minute practice sessions leading into qualifying and a 60-minute race that is due to start at 3:50 p.m
An endurance racing discipline for LMP3 and GT3 cars was also planned for the Marseille Games
Daniel Lloyd is a UK-based reporter for Sportscar365
covering the FIA World Endurance Championship
Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship
Germany takes gold medal in GT as Ayhancan Guven wins GT Sprint in last-to-first..
Split GT3 format returns for third FIA Motorsport Games held in Valencia..
Valencia to play host to third running of FIA Motorsport Games in 2024..

Manifesta 13 Marseille To Go Ahead In August
Manifesta 13 Marseille the ‘European nomadic biennial’ is to go ahead at the end of August 2020
It was supposed to take place in the South of France 7 June – 1 December 2020
The event will now welcome audiences and participants to its three programmes: the central exhibition Traits d’ union.s; its education and mediation programme Le Tiers Programme and the parallel programme Les Parallèles du Sud
between the 28th of August and the 29th of November 2020
To reaffirm that we will once again be able to share moments of joy and original artistic experiences
Manifesta 13 Marseille will be evolving throughout its entire duration
the plots of Traits d’ union.s will start to unfold
gradually moving from plot to plot with different intensities at different speeds
The story of Manifesta 13 Marseille is that of passages
or as the title of the exhibition suggests
between one world and the next: Traits d’ union.s
Manifesta 13 Marseille speaks first and foremost to the specific situation of Marseille
especially its histories and contemporary condition in this moment of transition
Manifesta 13 connects the voices of its participants with those of the local partner organisations and the people of Marseille
“For us Manifesta 13 Marseille was never thought of as a ‘full stop’
or rather hyphens – traits d’ union.s – a gesture of bringing together
suddenly we find ourselves in a situation where reality amplifies and exhilarates some of our underlying thoughts
Suddenly with all the predicaments of the present moment
you realise the urgency by which only culture can speak to the uncertainty of our times.”– Katerina Chuchalina
“By moving away from the traditional biennial model which Manifesta started to develop for Manifesta 12 Palermo in 2018
the future model for Manifesta is to collaborate even more closely and constructively with local citizens
Manifesta emphasises the potential that already exists within ‘the local’
which is very much visible in the current programme of Manifesta 13 in Marseille.” – Hedwig Fijen
“Organising Manifesta 13 Marseille from the 28th of August to the 29th of November 2020 is to give a sign of hope
to reaffirm that we will once again be able to share moments of joy and original artistic experiences
It is also a sign of our support to the artistic scene in Marseille
inventiveness and generosity to the widest possible audience
It means thinking about the future.” – Jean-Claude Gaudin
Honorary Vice-President of the Senate of the French Republic
Visitors are encouraged to visit Manifesta 13 Marseille repeatedly
exploring all six Traits d’ union.s plots as they unfold across the city
Le Tiers Programme will open the sixth exhibition of the Invisible Archives at the Tiers QG

narrated by invited artists or collectives
Projects from Les Parallèles du Sud will be launched in collaboration with a large variety of local

Manifesta is developing a new press programme
which will be announced within the coming month
This will include virtual press moments and conferences as well as a variety of dates proposed for onsite visits

Here's a ranking of Marseille's best and worst arrondissements
Find out where your neighborhood is located
Useful for French people looking for a new life or a pied-à-terre, the villeidéale.fr allows residents to rate a city according to very specific criteria
this barometer – though unofficial – is perhaps the most authentic way of assessing the quality of life in France’s cities
each arrondissement is entitled to its own assessment
what do the people of Marseilles think of their neighbourhood?
A score out of 10 is then derived from these criteria
to give an indication of a district’s overall quality of life
6.56/10 for safety and an excellent score of 7.28/10 for health
Marseille’s 12th arrondissement scored a handsome average of 7.19/10
topping the list of “best arrondissements” in the city
a poor performer in terms of environment and safety
as does Marseille’s 15th arrondissement… What do you think
Remember that the Ideal City website is a participative site
and that you too can give your neighborhood a rating!
Derived from these findings, the study suggests a number of spatial interventions for the city, serving as a tool for citizens to rethink and reimagine the potential of Marseille
The study is structured in nine chapters in order to guide the reader through the discovery of “The Grand Puzzle,” avoiding the temptation to conclude with a static
the study highlights the potentialities of the city in a European perspective
“finding the themes that echo the critical issues Europe and Marseille face today.”
plunging visitors into the animated world of a city without the rules of urban planning
Taking place between June 7th and November 1st, 2020, Manifesta 13 Marseille will consist of “an interdisciplinary program of artistic events broadly in the areas of art
and mediation throughout the Marseille region.”

Can the self-styled ‘nomadic art biennale’ – with its socially-engaged mission – withstand the weight of its own contradictions
In November 2018 two tenements in the impoverished
densely populated centre of Marseille collapsed
killing eight people and making around 800 homeless
It was a catastrophe that alerted residents to chronic failures in the way their city was governed: the conservative local authority
had been enabling a process of managed decline
allowing the housing in Marseille’s poorer quarters to fall into disrepair while ignoring tenants’ complaints and failing to make crucial repairs
That the majority of the district’s inhabitants came from immigrant backgrounds only added to their sense that they had become the victims of an administratively engineered conspiracy
This tragedy looms large over the latest edition of Manifesta
which was entering planning stages just as the collapse occurred
The self-styled ‘nomadic art biennale’ has always explored the social context of its host cities
but in this instance there was an added urgency
The latent social issues that suddenly exploded into municipal discourse in the wake of the disaster – institutional racism
to name a few – are explored countless times across the 20-plus venues of the exhibition’s sprawling official programme
which takes the visitor on a whirlwind tour through crumbling public museums
project spaces and repurposed industrial structures
and repeatedly attempts to prove that it is more than a glib contemporary art event with a side order of social platitudes: a reasonable description of the previous Manifesta
The best projects here tackle the political concerns highlighted by the 2018 calamity head-on
Algerian-born architect Samia Henni’s display at the Musée d’Histoire de Marseille
a local history museum improbably located in a 1990s shopping centre
sees her plastering its walls with oral histories from Marseille residents that testify to institutional police racism
as well as maps and statistics explaining the corrosive effects of urban mismanagement
we learn that the Marseille police force – a body with strong ties to the Pied-Noir community (French colonials born in Algeria who returned to France following Algeria’s independence) – spent decades failing to solve the murders of Algerian nationals; arrests were only made when the killers were caught in the act
Another gut-punch comes courtesy of the biennale’s single best segment
a show themed around the variable meanings of ‘home’ at the Musée Grobet-Labadié
a former haut-bourgeois townhouse converted into a museum
Martine Derain presents a series of photographs of empty rooms on Marseille’s Rue de la République
a once-bustling street rendered silent when its inhabitants – again
mostly from immigrant backgrounds – were forcibly evicted to make way for an as-yet-unrealised redevelopment project
Footage of protests by a local residents’ association plays out on a TV screen
providing a frenetic contrast to the eerily serene interiors of the vacated spaces
Elsewhere among the bourgeois furnishings of the Grobet-Labadié
Cameron Rowland presents part of an ongoing documentary project in which he explores the electronic monitoring of individuals paroled from the US prison system and the profiteering agenda of the contractors tasked with enforcing it
Attached to the wall is an example of the kind of handheld monitoring device used to surveil prisoners on probation
alerting them to curfews and no-go areas: if its instructions are violated
The cost of surveillance is paid for by the prisoners themselves
meaning that the now-widespread law enforcement practice is a lucrative industry
Quite how common this kind of monitoring has become is spelled out in documents displayed alongside: nearly four million people are currently on parole in the US; and some 45 percent of inmates entering prisons in the US have been sent down for electronically detected parole violations
Equally impressive is the biennale’s satellite educational programme
which showcases the archives of various local activist groups
So far the programme has presented an impressively diverse selection of causes
to a local hip-hop group that for years campaigned to have a street renamed in honour of a murdered colleague
Filled with vitrines packed with significant documents
the former cafeteria that serves as a base for the programme is a perfect articulation of the identity Manifesta likes to project: intelligent
not least the cancellation of a planned project at the Musée Cantini by Marc Camille Chaimowicz
who was forced to pull out due to COVID-19 travel concerns
Over at the Palais Longchamp – a preposterous Second Empire wedding cake of a building housing the city’s Musée des Beaux-Arts – the prevailing seriousness is offset by Lebanese artist Ali Cherri’s daft totemic sculptures
created from recycled taxidermy animals and light-industrial objets trouvés; interspersed with the museum’s Baroque hunting scenes
Perhaps the most instructive project of all plays out in the courtyard of a slightly down-at-heel musical conservatory
where Mohamed Bourouissa has created a truly disorienting sound installation based on the coded vocal signals Marseille drug dealers use to alert each other to the presence of the police
Watching musical students eating their lunch as the discordant soundtrack plays out immediately puts you in the position of the flâneur
You wonder what the dealers pursuing their business beyond the conservatory walls make of it all
This brings us to the complications of this biennale
There is a strangely self-conscious tone to this Manifesta – the official literature constantly reminds you that there is only so much art can do in the face of social upheaval and global pandemic – and small wonder: ever since Marseille won the bid to host it in 2016
there has been a degree of local hostility
Associations of the sort profiled by the educational programme have complained that municipal funds that might otherwise have been available to them were siphoned off to pay for an art event of minimal significance to Marseille residents
this sentiment has never entirely dissipated
despite Manifesta 13’s focus on the ruinous effects of thoughtless ‘urban regeneration’ schemes
events like this one play their role in enabling the kind of gentrification they condemn
the V-A-C Foundation’s Katerina Chuchalina and Alya Sebti of Berlin’s Ifa Gallery – will happily discuss this in person
They have done an impressive job given the shit hand they’ve been dealt
you’re left wondering quite how far an explicitly socially conscious initiative like Manifesta can withstand the weight of its own contradictions when faced with unignorable tragedy
Manifesta 13, various venues, Marseille, 28 August – 29 October; online visits and events continue until 26 November
