Teenager alleged to have been recruited by prisoner who later called police to report him over killing of taxi driver
Marseille’s long-running drug turf wars are under a renewed spotlight after a 14-year-old boy was allegedly hired as a hitman via social media and promised €50,000 (£42,000) by a prisoner to carry out a revenge killing
The teenager is alleged to have been recruited by the 23-year-old inmate who later called the police from his prison cell to report the boy after he allegedly shot dead a 36-year-old man
An investigation has been opened into alleged murder and conspiracy to murder by a criminal gang
Police are trying to determine why the prisoner reported his own alleged recruit to police
Read moreOn Friday, a 36-year-old taxi driver from the firm Bolt, who was well-known in Marseille as an amateur footballer, was found shot dead by a bullet to the head in his car not far from the city’s main train station. He was described by the prosecutor as having nothing to do with the drugs trade in the Mediterranean port city and although he was “coldly shot” in the back of the head, he was not believed to have been the intended target.
Bessone said: “[The prisoner] recruited a 14-year-old minor from Vaucluse and organised the logistics for him to be collected by car and brought to a hotel room in Marseille. The young boy was carrying his own 357 Magnum revolver”.
The boy allegedly had been instructed to carrying out a shooting and was told to travel by car. He asked the driver to wait, and when he refused the boy shot him in the back of the head, authorities said.
The 14-year-old then allegedly fled the scene and hid nearby, calling his contacts and asking them to come and get him. But instead, the prisoner who had ordered the killing called police to report the boy, giving them his exact location, the prosecutor said. The boy was arrested and was being questioned.
Bessone said the exact reason for the jailed man calling the police, and saying he was acting for a drug gang, remained to be determined. The prisoner went before a judge on Sunday and was charged in the case.
The prosecutor said the 14-year-old boy was hired to carry out a revenge killing over the death of a 15-year-old boy last Wednesday.

The same prisoner had last week contacted a 15-year-old boy online saying he would pay him €2,000 to intimidate a competitor from a rival drugs gang by setting fire to his door. The boy was tasked with shooting at the man’s door and setting it alight.
But the teenager was spotted by members of a rival gang who the prosecutor said “stabbed him 50 times” then set him on fire, killing him. The 14-year-old boy was then allegedly hired online a few days later to avenge that killing.
Marseille, France’s second-largest city, is also one of the poorest in France and is plagued by drug-related violence, which the president, Emmanuel Macron, pledged this year to stamp out. The city has in recent years witnessed a turf war for control of the highly profitable drug market between various clans. Bessone said victims and perpetrators of such violence were getting increasingly younger.
The two latest deaths mean that the number of drug-related killings in Marseille has risen to 17 since the start of the year. Forty-nine people were killed in drug related violence in the city in 2023.
The high-rise housing estates in the north of Marseille are in the grip of drug gangs. Residents of these underserved neighborhoods are forced to live with violence and a lack of opportunities. But not everyone is willing to accept the situation.

Marseille
here’s where to eat in the city everyone’s talking about
Sure, bouillabaisse is great – but there’s far more to Marseille’s dining scene. This being France
you’d expect at least a few life-changingly good restaurants
But Marseille’s long and varied historical and cultural heritage makes its food scene particularly expansive and exciting
fresh-as-anything fish or piping hot street food munched en route to the beach
here’s our selection of the best places to eat in one of Europe’s most delicious cities.
This guide was written by the team at Time Out Marseille. At Time Out, all of our travel guides are written by local writers who know their cities inside out. For more about how we curate, see our editorial guidelines
It’s hard not to fall head over heels for A Moro, a charming little spot on Rue Venture
The setting might be unassuming – speckled floor
knick-knacks from another era and a small terrace that spills onto the street at the first hint of sunshine – but there’s an inexplicable comfort here
like being wrapped up in an actual tiramisu
you’ll find expertly crafted small plates: a thimble-sized vitello tonnato; broccoli with ‘nduja and crunchy pangrattato; and tender braised beef cheek with creamy polenta and cabbage.
© TubaThis sun-drenched hotel-restaurant couldn’t tick any more boxes if it tried. Tuba’s retro-style cabin rooms are housed in a former diving centre looking out over the ocean at Les Goudes – and the bar and restaurant are just as jaw-dropping
Grab a water taxi from Vieux Port to soak up the vibes on a deckchair
formerly of Mama Shelter – try the Le Grand Bleu de Marie
a twist on a Bloody Mary with white wine and cockles
Chef Antoine Teychené’s menu is simple and seasonal: think fish of the day thrown on the coals
or harissa tajine with panisse (fried chickpea fritters
Ever tried raspberry with harissa, eel with chocolate, semolina with crab? We thought not, but you’ll find all these combos at the brainchild of Alexandre Mazzia
a 1.95-metre-tall former basketball player turned MVP of the kitchen
Putting Marseille on the map of global haute cuisine with his unusual pairings. In a minimalist setting combining natural materials and soft lighting
we were presented with a tasting menu of 40 dishes (yes
How about their devilish tarama with green oil; bold combinations like gorgonzola with grilled almond condiments
and onions; perfectly crispy pommes dauphine topped with onion ketchup and herb mayo; or a superb bowl of mussels spiced with smoked paprika
Starting at 8.30am, the duo behind this cosy café on the charming Rue Fontange – Axelle Poittevin and Thomas Benayoun – are busy pulling espresso shots (Brazilian or Guatemalan from Ben Mouture coffee shop) with the precision of a firing squad, straight from a well-travelled La Marzocco machine. Out on Razzia’s terrace
it’s like watching a live episode of France 3 Régions
with the eclectic mix of hipsters and old-school locals from La Plaine in this rapidly gentrifying street
If the morning has you wanting to cruise through life with an almond cookie
lunchtime brings the real flavour with competition-worthy sandwiches
made with buns freshly snagged daily from the nearby bakery
Among the standout options is the unforgettable ‘bœufato tonnato’ sandwich
and radicchio flambéed with guanciale
The communal meal is inspired by cucina povera – a parade of comforting
well executed dishes. You’ll leave with knees like fusilli
At Prémices, a two-story spot just a short stroll from the port
thickly-cushioned banquettes and a delightful tiled bar
always with a veggie option to keep your carbon footprint in check. When we went
we tried bull tartare on tangy labneh
streaked with a zesty tamarind-prune condiment
a delicately steamed skate wing dotted with kimchi-infused beurre blanc and spelt and BBQ-seared Brussels sprouts
all under the blazing sun on the spacious terrace
Unless you’re willing to get up at the crack of dawn to jostle with the crowds at the Vieux-Port on a Saturday morning, finding decent fish in Marseille without paying through the gills isn’t easy. But Poissonnerie Kennedy changed the game. On the ground floor by the pavement
you’ll find a counter covered in ice
and bouquets of pink shrimp ready to be taken away before heading to the rocks – still one of the city’s best spots for a romantic rendezvous
it’s all about sharing: BBQ clams with chili and beef fat
the chalkboard menu featured devilishly good prawns flambéed in pastis
a sea bass tartare enhanced with crushed hazelnuts
braised leek segments wrapped in a clear beurre blanc
and impressive lamb meatballs served with polenta
From the moment Regain opened at 53 Rue Saint-Pierre
a somewhat rough-around-the-edges slope in the 5th district
Marseille’s culinary scene suddenly hit a high note
bistro chairs and a long zinc bar with an open kitchen
the duo of Sarah Chougnet-Strudel and Lucien Salomon serve up dishes for lunch and dinner that are dangerous to try and replicate at home
as each plate dares to combine flavours like a team of perfect outlaws
Think tender cauliflower with sunflower tahini
and fresh herbs; an intriguing beef tartare with Pink Lady apples
and confit egg yolk; and superb line-caught meagre with leek
sautéed chard and sorrel cream.
in a former haberdashery on Cours Saint-Louis for a legendary Marseille meal – our favourite is the €35 three-course lunch (served Friday to Sunday)
but don’t miss the five-course dinner: a tour of chef Harry’s talents at €62
Complemented by Laura’s natural wine picks
It’s hard to grasp Marseille in just a few bites and a drink, but if the city had to be summed up by a single bar, it would be the one at 41 Rue d’Endoume, where old-timers and night owls take turns from morning till night. On La Relève’s packed-out terrace
you sit down for lunch without even glancing at the chalkboard
classic three-course menu is written in white chalk; things like pristine brandade

Marseille 2-0 Nice - HighlightsMarseille continued their impressive start to the season under new coach Roberto De Zerbi by beating Nice 2-0 on Saturday to go provisionally top of Ligue 1
despite finishing the match with 10 men.Marseille continued their impressive start to the season under new coach Roberto De Zerbi by beating Nice 2-0 on Saturday to go provisionally top of Ligue 1
Mason Greenwood was unable to add to his remarkable tally of five goals in his first three matches in French football
but there was a debut goal for new signing Neal Maupay before a brilliant strike by Luis Henrique sealed the victory
Marseille had Canadian defender Derek Cornelius sent off late on
but held on for the win which moved them to 10 points from four matches
That lifted them a point clear of Paris Saint-Germain
although the defending champions will return to the summit if they can maintain their perfect start to the campaign by beating Brest later
The game at the Velodrome was watched by a crowd of more than 65,000 and there was a celebratory atmosphere as Marseille wore a collectors' edition shirt to mark their 125th birthday and fans set off fireworks late on
Maupay opened the scoring five minutes before half-time in this Mediterranean derby when he headed in a deflected cross by Luis Henrique for his first goal since returning to French football from Everton
made it 2-0 with a magnificent goal eight minutes into the second half as he came in off the left flank and played a quick exchange with Amine Harit before curling a shot high into the net
Cornelius was dismissed for a second yellow late on 75 minutes
but that did not stop OM getting all three points
and hopes will be high that they can push PSG in the title race if they can keep playing like this
especially compared to other southern French cities on the glittering Med
is that each hotel here has had a real chance to embrace the rhythm of the city and experiment — you’ll find few cookie-cutter hotel templates or rule books here
Some are grand: thoughtfully restored mansions from the days when Marseilles hosted high society heading from Paris to overseas
Others are more modern and glossy buildings set among the city’s faded shutters

“Hôtel-Dieu” is an old French term for a hospital or almshouse
but this palatial example built in 1753 became a hotel in the modern sense in 2013
this city landmark gazes across the Vieux Port towards the iconic hilltop basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde
Interiors in subdued tones drink in the brilliant Mediterranean light
and the classical arched windows and balustrades marry well with the clean-lined furnishings
There are few more enviable spots in town for a coffee and croissant than the private balconies in the “terrace” rooms
Plage des CatalansTucked between the most central of Marseilles’ beaches and the Corniche Kennedy
the road that shrink-wraps the rocky coast
Les Bords de Mer is a true seaside hotel in simple art deco form

The hotel’s clean white interiors couldn’t feel further from that notorious prison

So you’ve stepped off your TGV at the sunny end of the line
Salvation lies in a townhouse just steps away from the foot of the grand
statue-lined 19th-century staircase down from the station
having recently added a spa and fitness room
Part-business and part-boutique in appearance
this is a cut above the standard model of a station-adjacent hotel
It’s under 15 minutes’ walk from here to the Vieux Port
Palais-de-JusticeA tree-shaded street four blocks back from the Vieux Port is home to one of Marseilles’ smartest boutique hotels
in a five-floor townhouse dating from the city’s 19th-century rise as France’s imperial gateway
You’ll still see signs of this in the frescoes and gilt on the tall ceilings
your eye will be drawn instead to furnishings by mid-century design giants Le Corbusier and Arne Jacobsen
the hotel can provide a summer boat charter to a basking spot on its own small private island
Marseilles’ natural setting comes to the fore at this 16-room luxury hotel
which hugs the rocky shore between two camera-worthy coves
The villa property has been in the family of Gérald Passédat since 1917
and the chef has won three Michelin stars here for his delicate Mediterranean seafood dishes
making use of more than 65 varieties of fish
The hotel also has a second restaurant for more casual dining
whether from private balconies or the heated saltwater pool
PharoWith perhaps the most spectacular setting of any place to stay in Marseilles
this Sofitel stands watch alongside the nearby forts over the approach to the harbour
Like the ripple-walled MuCem museum also within view
many of the hotel’s design elements reference the sea
but with an outdoor pool and enough space — including the Pharo park next door — to appeal to families
Kudos to the breakfast buffet for its local specialities
this hotel has easy-on-the-eye rooms and apartments shared between a couple of fine townhouses close together on the same street
under ten minutes on foot south of the Vieux Port
The main building greets visitors with a Mediterranean-focused concept store and a tea salon
while its restaurant has kept its stucco-moulded ceiling
But its biggest treasure is the courtyard back garden
shaded by Mediterranean and tropical foliage
should you wish to try the most Provençal of pastimes
The Vieux Port has been the heart of Marseilles since 600BC
and all the rooms at this four-star hotel look out onto the harbour
The number of fish stalls on the quayside may have dwindled since the days when the city’s signature fish stew bouillabaisse was first cooked up
but it’s still a lively scene to wake up to
The 51 rooms and suites are mostly in a cutting-edge 1950s style (reimagined
but the biggest retro plaudits should go to the Library Lounge — surely the 1970s were never actually this groovy
Marseilles has absorbed influences from around the Mediterranean throughout its 2,600-year history
and perhaps the best hotel in town to reflect this sea-spanning culture is Le Ryad
It’s an otherwise-typical 19th-century townhouse from the front
but step inside and you might think yourself in Marrakesh
but there are just enough brass lamps in alcoves
rich red divan cushions and Majorelle Garden-inspired splashes of azure
Not forgetting that riad essential: a courtyard garden with a fountain
The north African food shops of the Noailles quarter are close by
One more small sign of Marseilles’ turnaround in the early 2010s was the arrival of this branch of the Mama Shelter franchise
which aims to tug the idea of the buzzy lifestyle hotel towards the affordable end of the market
pastel-shuttered backstreets of the sixth arrondissement
this mama is decked out in a Philippe Starck design that partly draws on retro Americana
but you might still find a Tweety Pie or Spiderman mask propped on your pillow
Sainte-AnneLocated 2.5 miles south of the city centre
unless you’re here for the football or rugby in the main stadium
But it’s a place of pilgrimage all the same
set in La Cité Radieuse — an early 1950s apartment block designed by Le Corbusier
which helped to define modern architecture
The brutalist concrete structure is brightened with primary colours in the style of the Dutch abstract artist Piet Mondrian
but how often do you get the chance to sleep in a bona fide Unesco world heritage site
Aesthetes staying with children will also appreciate the kids’ paddling pool
Vieux PortStanding on the corner where La Canebière
the Grand Hotel Beauvau could not be in a more central location
but doesn’t wear its history too heavily (though the Frédéric Chopin Suite does recall one distinguished former guest)
and neither does it put all its design eggs in one period basket
but its 70-plus rooms feature everything from Napoleon III wardrobes to patterns from the art deco period
If you’re keener on sand than rock to serve as your stepping-off point into the Med
you’ll find the city’s biggest expanses of beach at the Prado
Overlooking the breakwaters at the seaside park’s northern end is the recently revamped low-rise 1970s complex housing the nhow Marseille (formerly the Pullman Palm Beach)
With one of the city’s largest hotel pools outside
and an indoor spa pool fed by a natural spring
this is a great base for those wishing to inject a bit more relaxation into a sightseeing city break
BaumettesWant that south of France vibe but not too hot on big-city surroundings
Hôtel 96 is on a quiet residential street on the edge of Marseilles
but closer to hikes in the coastal Calanques National Park

Claude McKay led a life marked by contradiction: generally ambivalent
Though he was the first major poet of the Harlem Renaissance
and his novel Banjo was a touchstone for theorists of Negritude and Pan-Africanism, McKay is not as iconic as
With the recent publication of two of his previously unreleased novels
there's a wave of renewed attention to both his life and work. Much like his Harlem Renaissance contemporaries
McKay is described as "difficult-to-categorize," "a misfit," "rebellious." He was polymorphous
He slept with both women and men but didn't write much about either
He hung out in modernist circles but spent much of his career writing sonnets in iambic pentameter.
he traveled to the nascent Soviet Union and received a rapturous welcome—meeting many high-level members of the Comintern including Zinoviev
and Trotsky—but when his hosts asked him to rally Russian workers by telling them that an American revolution was imminent
McKay criticized bourgeois values and the mandatory uplift of the New Negroes
then wrote stories about proletarian characters that behaved inappropriately—they did not organize
they drank and fought and fucked and robbed each other in the dead of night
This failure to live up to expectations often rendered both the left and right unsatisfied
the work didn't perform any discernible social function
too concerned with non-working lumpenproletariat types
The bourgeois New Negroes wanted him to recede to the background because the work made black people look bad—low-down
McKay's life and work was defined by the psychic and physical distances he maintained
but never returned after he left for the United States as a young man
At the height of his career and in the midst of the Harlem Renaissance
He attended many parties but was a reluctant dancer; he turned down invitations to Gertrude Stein's salon
He continued traveling across Europe and North Africa to Marseille
and Morocco for years before moving back to the States in poor health
He was syphilitic for the latter half of his life
had posed nude for Cubist painters in unheated studios
developing a case of pneumonia from which he never fully recovered
he renounced radical politics altogether and became a Catholic
dying a rather solitary death at a hospital in Chicago
Romance in Marseille (Penguin) is one of McKay's two posthumously published novels
was written over seventy years ago and only published in 2017
It is an inventive work with layers of irony
centered on the efforts of the Harlem intelligentsia to organize support for Ethiopia as the country faced Italian occupation. Romance in Marseille was written almost twenty years earlier
and is shorter and classically picaresque. The book opens with Lafala
a West African man of indeterminate origin
Having stowed away on a ship from Marseille to find work in America
he is discovered by the ship's staff and chained up against his will for the duration of the trip.
he gets frostbite and eventually has both lower legs amputated
While convalescing he meets a lawyer who sues the shipping company on his behalf
There are richly-detailed characters— intellectuals
The core of the story is the titular romance between Lafala and Aslima
a liaison complicated by the jealousy of Aslima’s Corsican pimp
There are many intrigues; the people in this world are overly credulous and
Romance in Marseille is immediately historically significant upon arrival: McKay’s commitment to creating truly marginal characters is extraordinary for the period
and the book will undoubtedly provide a rich text for contemporary theorists in a number of disciplines
Lafala's captivity and travails dovetail with Christina Sharpe’s theorization of the hold
The fact that McKay (who was bisexual himself) includes openly queer
unpathologized characters is notable for the time
and may also account for his publishers' reluctance to print the book.
things that don't quite make sense—plot holes and discontinuities raise more questions than McKay is willing to answer
One is left to wonder: Why do all the African characters speak the king's English
while the African Americans shuffle along in vernacular dialect
Is Lafala's disability ever accounted for in a real way
Why did McKay try his hand at writing an African protagonist at all
How can we truly represent the other who is just barely other
How do we represent that which is at once familiar and immensely foreign—that which in one sense belongs to us
and yet is and must always be wholly separate
Brent Edwards (via Léopold Sédar Senghor) has theorized a notion of décalage—a certain irreconcilability
an ever-present gap between positions in the African diaspora
The word can be translated as discrepancy, time-lag
or interval; it's also the word that French speakers sometimes use to translate jet lag
The verb caler means to prop up or wedge something
and décalage means the removal of some artificial prop or wedge
As Edwards writes in The Practice of Diaspora:
Reading a work through the lens of décalage
one begins to understand that attempts at reconciling diaspora are always already incomplete—the nation can never be whole; any attempts to reconstruct it must necessarily fall short
But Romance in Marseille complicates this further: McKay's use of a disabled narrator forces us to contend with the contingent nature of narrative itself
As Sharon Snyder and David Mitchell have elaborated in Narrative Prosthesis
these characters are often employed as prosthetics for narrative: used to add extra metaphorical heft
propping up the work by standing in for larger themes

le 36ème point de présence de CloudFlare2015-07-14

What better day than the 14th of July (Bastille Day) to announce the latest addition to our network in Marseille
Our data center in the southern city of Marseille is our 2nd in France
France’s second largest city following Paris
is home to 2 million Internet users across the surrounding metropolitan area
It also serves as another point of redundancy to our Paris data center
one of our most trafficked facilities in the whole of Europe
the true importance of Marseille is not just redundancy or its size
Marseille’s southern location makes it a major Internet gateway for networks throughout the Mediterranean
including many African and Middle Eastern countries
This is reflected by the fact that a substantial number of undersea submarine cables carrying Internet traffic are routed through Marseille (7 to be exact
and for those fastidious followers of our blog)
Marseille: a key interconnection point for traffic throughout the Mediterranean
These undersea cables are the principal means by which many countries are able to access the rest of the Internet—that is to say
access all of the other global networks that make up this big interconnected network we refer to as the Internet
this latest deployment has reduced by half the latency to the over 2 million Internet applications using CloudFlare
all web sites and applications behind CloudFlare are now 2x as fast to access in Algeria (and in many other countries) now that Marseille is online
If you’ve followed our previous blog posts
you’ll know that peering—the act of interconnecting with other regional networks—is critical to the fast
secure and local delivery of Internet traffic
We’re proud to be the most recent participant on FranceIX’s Marseille Internet exchange
through which we are now able to serve traffic to networks throughout the Mediterranean
If you are a customer of one of these ISPs
please reach out and encourage them to join
Finally, as a result of our Marseille deployment, France is now the second country in Europe (following Germany after our Düsseldorf deployment) to host multiple CloudFlare data centers. However, it won’t be the last! Hint Hint….
_— Joyeux 14 juillet de la part de toute l’équipe CloudFlare!
(Happy Bastille Day from the CloudFlare team! for all non-french speaking blog readers)_

Brighton's win gives them first place in Europa League Group B
Subscribe to The Athletic using our latest gift offer for the holidays here.
With Marseille assured of a top-two spot in Group B
coach Gennaro Gattuso has handed defender Bamo Meite the first European start of his career today
The 22-year-old has appeared in two Europa League matches this season
but played just a total of three minutes in normal time between those games
He's made eight appearances in Ligue 1
but hasn't started a match in any competition since August
Facing Brighton's dynamic attack will provide valuable experience for Meite
It's just been pointed out to me that Brighton midfielder Billy Gilmour was actually a youth team player at Glasgow Rangers when Gennaro Gattuso was still in his playing days at Ibrox
Gilmour said before the game: "Of course I’ve watched YouTube clips of Gattuso
My grandad always told me about the old players at Rangers
"Gattuso was a very aggressive player and also a very good footballer with the ball
He was a top player for Rangers and had a great career."
Can Gattuso's side shackle the skittish midfielder tonight
Marseille forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Brighton No 9 Joao Pedro are the joint-top goalscorers in the Europa League so far
Aubameyang's have come at a rate of 1.83 goals per 90 minutes
De Zerbi admitted: "At the moment he (Kaoru Mitoma) is good to play
we have to manage him in the best way if we want to play with him every week
There are other players in the same situation – James Milner
Lewis Dunk didn’t finish the game on Saturday
"The toughest part of our work is deciding the first XI and not taking risks."
Gattuso said about his compatriot: "To be honest
we didn’t see eye to eye when we were young..
"He's one of the most important Italian coaches we have at the moment
He knows how to make his team play in an incredible way
and I’m proud that we have such a young coach doing so well in England."
This Brighton side could line up in a manner of different shapes
Adingra and Buonanotte could swap from right wing to the No 10 slot
Gross or Hinshelwood may play at full-back
De Zerbi also has the option of going with a back five to match up to Marseille's system if he wants
Dunk and Van Hecke as the three central defenders
with Gross and Gilmour in the middle of the park and Buonanotte supporting Pedro up front
Gross could basically play anywhere in front of the centre halves
Buonanotte could drop into midfield to match Marseille's central three..
It looks very much like Gennaro Gattuso is sticking to the back five that got him a 4-2 win away against Lorient last time out
Young loanee Bamo Meite replaces Samuel Gigot at centre half
Renan Lodi and Jonathan Clauss will bomb on from wing-back
Azzedine Ounahi and Jordan Veretout are all technically gifted and will pack the midfield to deny Brighton the time and space they crave
Vitinha (not the PSG/former Wolves midfielder - the Portuguese striker they signed from Braga) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will look to test the leaky Brighton defence
De Zerbi's apparent No 1 Jason Steele gets the nod ahead of Bart Verbruggen in goal with top spot on the line
Joel Veltman only makes the bench after a personal issue
with Igor Julio at left-back and Pascal Gross or Jack Hinshelwood at right-back
The other will partner Billy Gilmour in the engine room
mobile attacking midfield three behind Joao Pedro
Jack Hinchy and Joshua Duffus will hope to get some minutes too
Roberto De Zerbi’s player rotation has been an ongoing theme since he became Brighton’s manager
61 changes to his starting line-up in 15 games is comfortably more than any other side in the Premier League
But it may be more fun to analyse the volume of rotations that Brighton’s players make within games
De Zerbi’s tactical approach is built on dragging the opponent into areas they don’t want to go
making space for their own players to exploit
the rules of the quiz are simple: can you identify which position certain Brighton players operated in during the game
Roberto De Zerbi's men line up as follows
We hope team news will be on the way in the not-too-distant future
The eight early kick-offs have all reached half-time
Group B has been explained
with Rangers facing table-toppers Real Betis hoping to progress
as Sparta Prague face bottom side Aris Limassol
Group D sees already-qualified Atalanta and Sporting CP fighting it out for first
it's 0-0 between Union SG and Toulouse as both aim to join Jurgen Klopp's side in the knockout stages
and Slavia Prague and Roma will go through from Groups F and G respectively
Bayer Leverkusen are guaranteed to top the group
Roberto De Zerbi, who The Athletic recently revealed is in discussions to extend his contract
was very downbeat after Brighton's 1-1 draw with Burnley last time out on Saturday
even questioning his own credentials as a "top coach"
he should take credit for an inventive performance in challenging circumstances
A strong(er) defence meets a strong attack
Marseille boss Gennaro Gattuso certainly has an interesting turn of phrase
he said: "Brighton are everywhere on the pitch
against Chelsea they had 65% possession away from home - they have incredible stats
"We can't come here and play for a draw
we'd need Jesus Christ to do that."
No one will remember Aston Villa’s victory over Legia Warsaw for the football after an evening of chaos at Villa Park
it was 2-1 to the home team but it was events off the pitch that will linger in the memory
Forty-six arrests were made for a variety of offences
including violent disorder and assaulting police officers
West Midlands police say they will further review all available footage to identify the perpetrators
with four officers hurt and one being taken to hospital
All injuries are believed not to be serious
Chief Inspector and match commander Tim Robinson said: “Unfortunately
there were appalling scenes which saw away fans dangerously throw flares and other missiles at our officers
yet officers’ own safety was put at risk because of the deplorable actions of others
there was no other choice but to prevent away fans entering the stadium

A spate of murders — one involving a 15-year-old burned alive and another committed by a 14-year-old hitman-for-hire — has caused an uproar over the drug war plaguing France's second-biggest city
Outrage has swept France as it became apparent the two Marseille teenagers were recruited as hitmen over social media by a 23-year-old member of the so-called "New Blacks" gang — detained in a prison located in the southern French city of Aix-en-Provence
The two murders — committed only two days apart — are part of an ongoing war between two rival gangs
known as DZ Mafia and another called the New Blacks
The rival gangs are embroiled in a turf war over a drug dealing spot located in Marseille's 3rd arrondissement
repeatedly making national headlines for drug busts and killings
Marseille’s public prosecutor Nicolas Bessone told a press conference on Sunday that once recruited by the inmate
the 15-year-old teen was tasked with setting alight a rival dealer's front door in exchange for a fee of €2,000
the 15-year-old was approached by rival gang members
the teenager was"stabbed 50 times and taken to the Fonscolombes housing estate
The inmate who had recruited the boy did not end things there
to whom he offered a fee of €50,000 to murder a rival gang member
The teenager — who was previously known to the police — has been in social care since he was nine
Accepting the job and accompanied by a friend
he ordered a Bolt ride to the Félix Pyat neighbourhood
the teenager asked the 36-year-old taxi driver
the 14-year-old shot him in the back of the head
Bessone said it was the inmate who called the police to report the boy's location
The boy had fled to hide and admitted to the killing after he was apprehended but claimed it was an accident
The inmate behind the recruitment appeared before a judge on Sunday and was charged in the case
The public prosecutor has since announced the opening of several investigations into these two cases
looking into “murder in an organised gang” for the 15-year-old burned to death
For the death of 36-year-old Nessim Ramdane
the investigation will focus on the “criminal conspiracy to commit a crime” and “premeditated murder in an organised gang”
Bessone stated that the situation in the city of some 860,000 has reached “a whole other level”
expressing his concern at the fact that boys were being recruited at such a young age
Marseille's public prosecutor spoke about the growing violence in the city with Euronews in March
warning of further escalation caused by what he said was “money that flows
dealers have been targeting vulnerable youth in search of quick cash
Drug-related deaths in Marseille reached an all-time high last year
things appeared to have changed for the better when figures revealed that the number of drug-related deaths had been slashed in three for the period of January to September 2024
Yet, this is not a quick fix issue, as French politicians have spent decades battling about how to deal with this situation
while many residents accuse authorities of leaving them behind
France's drug trafficking market currently rakes in €3 billion a year
A drug dealing spot can generate anywhere between €25 and €90,000 in a single day
while five to 10 drug dealing points are dismantled daily in Marseille alone
French authorities seized 7 tonnes of cannabis
€21 million in criminal assets and 107 assault rifles in the region around France’s second-largest city
Marseille’s long criminal history and reputation as a drug trafficking capital can be traced to the “French Connection.” The French connection was a drug trafficking route through Marseille
established in the 1930’s when mafia leader Paul Carbone transported poppy seeds from Turkey to France via Marseille and then on to Canada and eventually the US to be used in the manufacturing of heroin
Marseille was one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean
With its reputation as a drug capital being cemented over the years and its status as France’s major port city
In 2018 there were 23 gang-related deaths in France’s second city
in 2019 this climbed to 28 and this year gangland killings have claimed 15 lives
it isn’t just this worrying escalation that has French citizens so scared
There is a concerning trend that the age of the victims seems to be decreasing
was shot dead by a young man on a scooter outside the Les Marronniers housing estate where he lived
Two other boys were wounded in the shooting
Rayanne’s family insist he was just a normal boy
who attended school and enjoyed playing with friends
Investigators however have evidence to the contrary
reporting that he was a chouffeur (lookout) paid by one of the gangs to patrol their turf
Whether he was an innocent victim or a target for a rival gang
social workers and local journalists all attest to the fact drug auxiliaries are getting progressively younger
One social worker spoke to Le Monde newspaper: “In 2010 the first time a 16-year-old was killed it was a thunderclap
An investigating magistrate told Le Monde that young people are being recruited by gangs via the Internet and many come from estates in other French cities
They say the gangs tell the young recruits that it is “like a summer job
but they’re much more vulnerable than the local lads because they’re so isolated.”
a writer and expert on the poor northern neighbourhoods of Marseille
says many young recruits become indebted to gang leaders and some even dip into their supply
so they push out further from their home turf
They come up against other kids from other gangs
President Emmanuel Macron visited Marseille and the gangland violence formed the backdrop for his appearance
Residents pleaded with Macron for help on Wednesday
This surge in deadly shootings has put long-standing social problems on the political agenda
A social worker from Bassens told AFP ahead of Marcon’s arrival
“We’re scared…sometimes you hear shooting like it’s a Western film.” Citizens were asking for more police
and better housing as encounters with drug dealers are now a regular occurrence
“We won’t give up…We have improved results
in making sure drug-dealing spots close permanently.” While his claims are accurate and death rates remain below those in 2016 and the particularly violent period in the 1980s
still give the impression the drug turf war in Marseille is not slowing down
“Nobody cares what happens here…I get the sense that they [politicians] think
‘let’s leave these paupers and foreigners to kill each other out there.’”
Poverty and urban squalor have contributed to the hold the drug trade has over Marseille
People in these urban estates are desperate for money and at times the school system is failing young people
“the schools are unworthy of the republic” describing them as being in a “woeful” state
This combination has made easy targets of young people as gangs can promise them fast money in return for loyalty
While drug gangs and turf wars may not be unique to Marseille
whether innocent bystanders or lookouts for gangs
is becoming a recurring theme that cannot be ignored
Marseille has a long-established reputation as an underworld for crime but it appears that now the heart of the city is under siege
with children caught in the middle of a drug war and no one offering any solutions yet

Many reports have claimed that AC Milan are interested in securing the signing of Boubacar Kamara of Marseille who is a central midfielder
but also able to play the centre-back role quite well
Milan managers are admirers of the 21-year-old player's quality and value his talent highly especially given that he could be a good opportunity to reinforce the squad as Kamara's contract is set to expire next year
According to what is reported by L'Equipe in France
English club Newcastle stepped up efforts to sign the player this summer by proposing a transfer fee of 14 million euros
Marseille would like to monetise more money than that

Paris Sanit-Germain (PSG) star Kylian Mbappe is coming for soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo's records after the Paris-based Ligue 1 club crushed Olympique de Marseille with 2-0 victory on Thursday
Thursday's match put Real Madrid superfan Mbappe on course to equal Ronaldo's record for the longest unbeaten run in his career against a given team
The French international tied Ronaldo's record against Espanyol by going 16 games without losing against the Marseille team
in an unbelievable coincidence where both players won 14 games and drew two
Both players have also left behind Argentine soccer legend Lionel Messi
who has beat Racing Santander 11 times and like the Frenchman and the Portuguese
one thing that all three footballers have in common is that both are undefeated against four teams that they have faced in more than 10 career games
Olympique de Marseille (14 wins and two draws)
The most notable difference between the three is that Messi and Mbappe have a record of more victories than losses against all of their opponents
Ronaldo has a record of more losses (15) than victories (10) against Messi's Barcelona
Wayne Barnes is set to take charge of a record fourth match at this stage

Sélection de gourmandises spéciales Saint Valentin à Aix et Marseille
Marseille will welcome Lille to the Stade Vélodrome in Ligue 1 on Saturday
Both teams have enjoyed a great run in the league this season
with the hosts in second place in the standings with 29 points
Les Phocéens extended their winning streak in the league to three games last week, with a 2-0 away win over Saint-Etienne. Adrien Rabiot scored in the first half and Mason Greenwood doubled their in the 65th minute
The visitors have been in good touch recently and are unbeaten in their last 15 games in all competitions
They registered a 3-1 home win over Brest in Ligue 1 last week
Jonathan David bagged a brace and picked up an assist
They continued their winning run in the UEFA Champions League with a 3-2 home triumph over Sturm Graz on Wednesday
Graz leveled the scores twice in that match and substitute Hákon Arnar Haraldsson scored the match-winner in the 81st minute
Les Phocéens are on a three-game winning streak
and will look to build on that goalscoring form here
they have won just one of their last four home games while suffering two defeats
While they have recorded just one win in their last eight games in this fixture
they are unbeaten in their last five home games
Valentin Carboni and Faris Moumbagna are set to miss this match with a knee injury
Les Dogues have won four of their last five games in all competitions
They have scored 14 goals in their last seven away games and are expected to continue their prolific run here
and Samuel Umtiti remain sidelined with injuries
Thomas Meunier was absent against Brest last week and should return to the starting XI
Both teams head into the match in great form and
Tip 2: Goals - Over/Under 2.5 Goals - Over 2.5 goals
Tip 3: At least one goal to be scored in the second half - Yes
Your perspective matters!Start the conversation
Both sides squared off in Ligue 1 exactly one month ago
with the spoils being shared in a 1-1 stalemate
Olympique Marseille turned in a resilient team display last weekend when they overturned a one-goal deficit to secure a 2-1 victory over Stade Rennais at the Roazhon Park
Roberto De Zerbi's men have now won three games on the bounce and are unbeaten in their last seven matches across all competitions
claiming six wins and one draw since November’s 3-1 loss against Auxerre
Marseille now turn their focus to the Coupe de France
where they kicked off their quest for an 11th title triumph with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Saint-Etienne in the round of 64 on December 22
LOSC Lille were involved in a third consecutive share of the spoils in Ligue 1 as they played out a somewhat disappointing goalless draw with Auxerre at the weekend
Bruno Genesio’s men have now gone 19 straight games without defeat across all competitions
claiming 10 wins and nine draws since a 2-0 loss against Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League back in September on September 17
Lille will now look to secure their first win of 2025 in the Coupe de France
where they kicked off their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over National 1 side FC Rouen in the round of 64 on December 20
Marseille head into Tuesday’s clash in fine form but will need to be at their best against a Lille side who have been tough to crack on the road in recent weeks
While we anticipate an exciting contest at the Stade Vélodrome
we are backing De Zerbi's men to come out on top and extend their solid home record in this fixture
Prediction: Olympique Marseille 2-1 LOSC Lille
Tip 2: Both sides to score - Yes (Both sides have scored in five of their most recent six meetings)
Tip 3: Over 10.5 corners - No (There have also been fewer than 11 corner kicks in four of the last five encounters between the two teams)
