I note with amusement that Bordeaux Airport “seeks to reduce low-cost flights from 72% to 60%”
“wishes to diversify the airline base” and “believes the area has potential to attract premium companies”.
Bordeaux Merignac was last year voted not only worst in France
but worst in Europe (an assessment I wholeheartedly support)

In May, low-cost airline Irish Ryanair announced it would close its base of operations in the French city of Bordeaux in November following a failure to find an agreement with the airport about fees
"Due to increased costs we don't have any financial alternative but to close our Bordeaux base in November," the company's commercial director Jason McGuinness said in a statement released in French at the time
The airline has been operating flights to and from around 40 different destinations around Europe from Bordeaux-Merignac (BOD)
which was as of 2023 the eighth busiest French airport with 6.6 million passengers each year
How will Ryanair leaving impact the airport
The loss of Bordeaux will make a large dent in the airport's flight offerings
According to air travel website Simple Flying
Ryanair had 138 weekly departures from Bordeaux as of May
which represented almost a quarter of the airport's total weekly traffic
Easyjet represented 30.9 percent of Bordeaux's weekly flights
including flights to UK destinations such as Bristol
Spanish low-cost airline Volotea offers 12 percent
The air travel website noted that the most popular "Ryanair destinations from BOD included Marseille Provence Airport (MRS)

Will the airport be able to fill the gap left by Ryanair
La Tribune Bordeaux that "[the airport] is looking for solid partners to carry out our strategic plans and to support us in our ambitions to transform the hub
We have around 30 other companies looking to do just that"
The head of route development for the airport, Cyrielle Clément, told Actu France "our first priority is to recover a large number of destinations that were only operated by Ryanair
we're working hard to identify the best companies to take over"
it is impossible to recover all of the passenger volume
but we can meet demand with less frequency."
there have been announcements from other low-cost airlines
about plans to open new lines from the Bordeaux airport
Easyjet announced in June it would be stepping up its presence
The budget airline said it would add Zurich as a new destination from Bordeaux
as well as more flights to Athens (Greece)
France Bleu reported that Easyjet was beginning to experiment with some routes previously held by Ryanair
with plans to offer two flights when France's national rugby team plays in Italy in February
Transavia also announced that it would be adding six new international routes from the Bordeaux airport, launching in winter 2024, according to the French press.
Transavia will offer four flights per week to Marseille (from €29 one way)
two flights per week to Seville (from €27 one way)
four flights per week to Marrakech (from €37 one way)
two each week to Agadir in Morocco (from €39 one way) and two weekly flights also to Istanbul (from €69 one way)
Porto and Seville were provided by Ryanair
Some smaller airlines will also take on some routes
Actu France reported that Volotea would take over flights to Marrakech and Madrid
a French airline offering regional transport
had opened a new route connecting Bordeaux to Marseille with four flights per week as of June 2024
the airport reportedly hopes to expand toward the Middle East
as well as to eventually open a direct line to New York
following the success of their route to Montreal
Americans are very fond of Bordeaux and our wine
There's little doubt that they'll come," Clément told Actu France
The head of route development added that discussions were also underway with Finnair and SAS airlines to increase flight offerings to Scandinavia
Ryanair said that "Bordeaux’s loss will be a gain for other airports across Europe"
noting that the airline would open five new aircraft bases in Copenhagen
Simple Flying reported that Ryanair would also be opening a second maintenance hangar in Lithuania
The airline did not make any specific announcements about additional plans in France or other south-western airports
The company stated cost issues in their departure announcement
specifically a "loss of $300m investment" and rising costs at the airport
Simon Dreschel told La Tribune Bordeaux that the airport is "changing the way [they] work with airlines
"Bordeaux airport is the cheapest airport in France and we are therefore entitled to raise our prices even though Bordeaux air traffic is very strong
READ MORE: Are France's loss-making regional airports under threat?
"We increased our prices by five percent in August 2023 and we [increased] them again by five percent on 1 August 2024
we remain the least expensive airport in France
The reality is that the airport is a company that must invest 250 million euros in its infrastructure and airlines must therefore pay for these services

Fourteen European science teams have just concluded experimental sessions in a microgravity environment - without expensive trips to orbit or even rocket launches
They all took part in ESA's 30th Parabolic Flight Campaign at Bordeaux-Merignac Airport
and they flew their experiments aboard the special "Zero-G" Airbus A300 owned by Novespace
The aircraft follows a precisely-calculated flight path that almost exactly matches the parabolic curve traced out by any object falling freely - a thrown stone
the aircraft and everything inside it - in this case
people and their experiments - are weightless
Since aeroplanes are not usually designed to behave like free-falling rocks
the whole procedure requires some very accurate flying
The pilots first bring the Airbus to near-maximum speed - more than 800 km/h - in level flight at 6,000 metres
they haul the machine into a gut-churning 45-degree climb
and throttle back the engines to provide just enough power to match air resistance
the crew let their aircraft "fall" upwards for around 2,000 metres
over the top of the parabolic curve - with airspeed down to just 390 km/h - and down again to its starting altitude
Then they put full power back on and pull the machine abruptly from its dive back into level flight
During the 20 seconds between climb and pull-out
its scientist-passengers - who may well include some trainee European astronauts; ESA's André Kuipers was on board during the May campaign - can check out their near-weightless experiments
In the course of a single Zero-G Airbus flight
they can expect to repeat the experience up to 30 times
not so much from the weightless spells as from the fierce 1.8-g accelerations when the Airbus climbs into and pulls out of its parabola
(The equivalent NASA aircraft has the well-earned nickname "Vomit Comit".) But everyone on board considers the flight well worth risking the loss of a breakfast
Those brief interludes of weightlessness are invaluable preludes for much more expensive trips into microgravity - perhaps aboard the International Space Station
scientists can be confident that the effects they want to observe really occur
and that the apparatus they have designed will work properly
The 14 experiments on this campaign - ESA's busiest ever - included eight in physical sciences and three in life sciences
There were also three student experiments that had already flown on the Zero-g Airbus: they were the most successful of 30 projects aboard the aircraft in last October's Student Parabolic Flight Campaign
The next ESA Parabolic Flight Campaign is scheduled for October 2001
Most of the experiment slots on board are already filled
but there ís also a limited amount of room on the aircraft for media representatives interested in microgravity science
Journalists wishing to apply are invited to do so by sending an e-mail to contactesa@esa.int

and last year the country produced 47.4 million hectoliters of the stuff—that’s 1.2 billion gallons
Only a part of that comes from Bordeaux and the surrounding Aquitaine area
but it’s arguably France’s best-known wine region
It’s second to Paris for most number of preserved historic buildings in the country
and its location on the Garonne River—just downstream from the Atlantic Ocean—offers a picturesque backdrop to a day spent along the water

the extension of the Bordeaux tram line A between Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport and the city centre was inaugurated on 29 April 2023
is separated from the Quatre – Chemins stop and includes four new stops in addition to the terminus: Mérignac Soleil
The € 95 million extension is of strategic importance for the city’s mobility; the airport can now be reached from the centre of Bordeaux in less than 35 minutes
and the Autopark and Merignac Soleil shopping centres and the Cadera park are also served
The new tram terminus is located next to the terminal
The A line is part of a network of 4 lines
for the capital of the New Aquitaine region
which was discontinued in 1958 after 78 years of operation
the modern tram was considered competitive for sustainable mobility and between 2003 and 2004
The success with the public was almost immediate
and between 2006 and 2008 the lines in service underwent major extensions
as well as the creation of 15 interchange car parks
both in Bordeaux and in the neighbouring municipalities touched by the tram lines
Trams now travel most of the way in reserved lanes
so as to reduce the maximum noise emission to less than 80 decibels
The stop platforms are at least 46 metres long
necessary to accommodate the high-capacity rolling stock that now makes up most of the fleet
also delivered by Alstom between 2002 and 2020
Bordeaux Metropole Transport’s tram fleet is now
Citizens immediately appreciated the comfort of the new Citadis
and the tram service soon became the main and most used mode of transport in Bordeaux
Line A is made up of a common central section and 4 peripheral branches corresponding to as many terminuses
between Quatre – Chemins and Buttiniere

Lillet was created in 1872 by Paul and Raymond Lillet
It is a blend of wines (Semillon grape variety for Lillet Blanc

the latest in a wave of suicides at the company
set himself on fire in the car park of a site at Merignac
He had worked for the company for 30 years
most recently at a call centre dealing with company accounts
and was a trade union member who monitored safety and work conditions
suggested the man had struggled with being made to frequently change jobs
"Those enforced changes meant he had to sell his house
He had written to the management on several occasions and in my understanding had no reply," Deschamps told AFP
I did not feel like he was on the verge of suicide."
France Telecom is Europe's third largest mobile phone operator and biggest provider of broadband internet services
But in recent years it has become synonymous with death and despair in what management called a "suicide contagion effect"
At least 23 of its employees killed themselves last year
and there were more than 30 reported suicides in 2008 and 2009
Among those who were found dead at their homes
some had left notes explicitly linking their suicide to their jobs
Unions complained of a climate of bullying
poor management methods and restructuring cuts that forced people to repeatedly change jobs
A 28-year-old worker who was found dead in his garage in Besançon in the east of France in August 2009 had left a note that talked of his girlfriend
but also mentioned how he felt "helpless" and "angry" over issues at work
A French prosecutor said it was impossible to formally establish a link between France Telecom and the suicide
but workers held a protest march over his death
a 52-year-old employee killed himself in Marseille
leaving a note blaming "overwork" and "management by terror"
He wrote: "I am committing suicide because of my work at France Telecom
Other deaths included that of a 51-year-old who threw himself off a bridge in the Alps after being moved from a back-office job to one in a call centre
Staff said the climate had worsened since privatisation
family breakdown and being forced to sell homes due to random job changes
Last October an official report found that the plan
to slim down the company and scrap 22,000 jobs in three months was behind the feeling of distress among staff
the company has increased the presence of psychological support workers and pledged to reduce workplace stress and staff difficulties
who had warned of a "spiral of death" stood down last year and was replaced by his deputy as a sign that management was taking the crisis seriously
Lombard had been criticised by unions for his poor choice of language in describing a "suicide trend" at France Telecom
The former state-owned monopoly was privatised in 1997
although the French government remained the biggest shareholder
the company was ordered to put in place measures to monitor and counsel staff thought to be suicidal
and at one point froze 500 employee transfers that were part of restructuring plans
Experience an updated layout for Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport (LFBD)
through this AFCAD file set designed by Ray Smith
Created with the latest Airport Design Editor (ADE)
It also provides comprehensive runway configuration options
ensuring users of Microsoft Flight Simulator X can enhance their airport operations with ease
Comprehensive Billi Terminal Integration: This file set includes the airport’s “Billi” facility
The term “Billi Terminal” refers to a dedicated structure intended for efficient passenger handling
Parking positions and assigned gates have been adjusted around this low-cost-focused area
Dual-Runway Capabilities (Crosswind Support): One of the included files introduces a crosswind runway setup
Crosswind refers to covering separate runway headings so that both runways remain fully in service for simultaneous arrivals and departures
This option allows more realistic traffic distribution
Revised Taxi Paths and Support Routes: All taxiways and signage have been enhanced
Ground service vehicle pathways have also been rebuilt
minimizing traffic congestion and improving ramp efficiency
Tower View Enhancement: Virtual tower perspectives are aligned to the airport’s control tower rooftop
giving a fresh vantage when selecting Tower View mode
Both options share parking assignments and identical stands
Enjoy the enhanced Bordeaux–Mérignac experience and discover all it has to offer

Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria on Wednesday flagged off four Rafale fighter jets from Merignac-Bordeaux airbase in France to India
officials familiar with the development said
India ordered 36 warplanes from France in September 2016 for ₹59,000 crore under a government-to-government deal
The arrival of the four jets will enable the completion of the first squadron of these fighters in Ambala and prepare for raising the second squadron at Hasimara in West Bengal
(TWITTER/@Indian_Embassy.) This is the fifth ferry of Rafale jets from France to India and their arrival will take the total number of French-origin fighters in the IAF inventory to 18
“Air Chief Mshl RKS Bhadauria on an official tour to France lauds pilots & sees off the next batch of Rafales on a nonstop flight to India with mid-air refuelling by French Air force & UAE
Thanks France esp FASF (French Air and Space Force) & French Industry for timely delivery & pilot training on schedule despite Covid-19,” the Indian embassy in France said on Twitter
Bhadauria reached France on a five-day official visit on Monday
The fighters landed at an Indian airbase late on Wednesday night
India ordered 36 warplanes from France (equivalent of two squadrons) in September 2016 for ₹59,000 crore under a government-to-government deal
The arrival of four jets will enable the completion of the first squadron of these fighters in Ambala and set the stage for raising the second squadron at Hasimara in West Bengal
All the 36 planes are likely to join the IAF’s fighter fleet by the year-end
who visited the Rafale conversion training centre in France on Wednesday
“The Centre has provided world-class training and it is because of the level and quality of training that we were able to operationalise the aircraft quickly
It is to the credit of the French industry that despite the Covid-19 restrictions
they were able to meet the training requirements in time
and deliver all the aircraft so far more or less in time.” He said some planes had been delivered ahead of time
“This has really contributed to the overall combat potential of the IAF
I would like to thank the French government
French air force and the industry,” he said
The IAF has operated the fighter jets in the Ladakh theatre where the military is on high alert amid a border standoff with China and where both sides are negotiating disengagement of troops at friction points along the contested Line of Actual Control (LAC)
India’s Rafale jets are equipped with modern weapons such as the Meteor beyond visual range air-to-air missiles
Scalp deep-strike cruise missiles and the Hammer smart weapon
India-specific enhancements on the jets include cold engine start capability to operate from high-altitude bases such as Leh
flight data recorders with storage for 10 hours of data
jammers and towed decoys to ward off incoming missiles
The twin-engine jet is capable of carrying out a variety of missions - ground and sea attack
reconnaissance and nuclear strike deterrence
It can carry more than nine tonnes of weapons on as many as 14 hard points

Leading French travel retailer Aelia has begun the roll-out of its new retail identity
to its latest stores at Bordeaux Mérignac and Lille Lesquin airports
The company’s updated retail brand was introduced at Nice Côte d’Azur Airport in May
it is bringing the brand to several of its key regional airports
and is tailoring the design for the passenger profile at each
The range on offer in the new store is closely aligned to the passenger profile for destinations served by low-cost airlines – mainly European and domestic traffic
In line with the new Aelia Duty Free store design concept
approximately 180sq m (half) of the shopfloor is allocated to perfumes and cosmetics and is clearly colour-coded pink
This is complemented by a green colour-coded area offering a full range of liquor
wines and Champagnes; an orange colour-coded area offering confectionery and fine food; and areas offering fashion & accessories and tobacco
Making its debut in French airport retail is skincare brand Caudalie
renowned for its beauty treatments containing the polyphenols found in grapes
The brand’s inclusion in the offer at Bordeaux is part of Aelia’s drive to tailor its range to suit each airport environment
and to test new brands with “real legitimacy” in a given location
Other new local brands also on offer include Écume d’Arcachon cologne and L’Eau de Bordeaux perfume
Among the highlights of the product offer is a dedicated wine cellar offering famous vintages from the Bordeaux region
France’s South-West is also well represented in fine food and confectionery
with several regional specialities prominent within the offer
Fashion and accessories brands include Lacoste and Polo Jeans
The tobacco offer is available to passengers travelling outside the EU
The store at “˜billi’ more than doubles Aelia’s sales area at Bordeaux Mérignac Airport
Aelia’s two existing stores – the 202sq m duty free store in terminal A and the 72sq m perfumes and accessories store in the public area of Terminal B – will be renovated and refurbished (and in Terminal A
Aelia Group was awarded the master retail concession at Bordeaux-Mérignac’s “˜billi’ in February 2010 after an open tender for a single retail partner in the new facility
This is the first master concession for Aelia
As well as the new 355sq m tax and duty free store
the contract covers almost 650sq m of the departure area
and includes a 120sq m bar and café – Taste N Fly – managed by airport catering specialist Elior
and a 110sq m news and gifts outlet operated by Relay
Aelia’s sister company within the Lagardère Services group
both of which also opened at the end of May 2010
Aelia Group Director of French Regional Operations Pascal le Droff said: “This has proved a very interesting project for Aelia
We are grateful to Aéroport de Bordeaux-Mérignac for choosing Aelia as its partner to achieve its vision for the success of “˜billi’ and for the trust they have placed in us to deliver our first master concession
We have been very fortunate to have found two very professional partners – Relay and Elior – and we are grateful to them for their support
“We believe the new Aelia Duty Free branding
and elegant and functional colour-coded store layout
combines with the walk-through design to create an attractive shopping environment for passengers
The range has been carefully constructed to include not just the leading international brands
but also the best of Bordeaux and the South-West
to meet the high expectations of passengers travelling with the low-cost lines operating flights into and out of billi.”
Aéroport de Bordeaux Mérignac’s Chairman of the Executive Board Pascal Personne said: “We are delighted to be working with Aelia to achieve billi’s potential as a successful “simplified services” terminal
The offer and design of the passenger lounge has been carefully tailored to meet our passenger profile and Aelia’s new store design integrates well to create a very pleasant environment.”
Traffic at “˜billi’ is expected to reach 500 000 passengers in its first year
The 208sq m outlet carries a product selection closely aligned to the passenger profile of the main destinations from Lille Lesquin – mainly North Africa (Morocco
The range includes a strong selection of regional speciality products from Northern France to meet the demands of both the seasonal tourist and business traffic
Pascal le Droff said: “Lille Lesquin serves a very dynamic region of France and a city that welcomes increasing numbers of tourists as well as business people
Our ambition was to create a dynamic and appealing store
reflecting the image of the airport and offering travellers a unique and exceptional experience
and grateful to Lille Lesquin Airport for continuing to place their trust in us
In 2009 traffic at Lille Lesquin airport reached over one million passengers
