probably one of the best-known painters in the world
spent the last months of his life in Auvers-sur-Oise
spreading out around the house where he lived
has been a source of inspiration for many artists
This is an opportunity for a weekend of exploration
Vincent van Gogh moved to Auvers-sur-Oise in the spring of 1890 on his return from the south of France
where he had been committed to a psychiatric institution
“Auvers is seriously beautiful,” he wrote to his brother Theo
He spent the last 70 days of his life there
an extraordinarily prolific period during which he produced more than 80 paintings
before dying in tragic circumstances shrouded in mystery
Auvers-sur-Oise is like an open-air museum
Visiting van Gogh’s final resting place is like a pilgrimage
where the artist’s bedroom is preserved in its original state
It’s an emotionally-charged experience that you’ll never forget
Before you continue your exploration of the village
a bistronomic restaurant housed inside a 17th-century building
one of the first coaching inns on the North Road after leaving Paris
you’ll have a view of the church bell tower painted by van Gogh
which you’ll be keen to visit during a delightful stroll through the village
Le Relais des Peintres 6 Rue du Général de Gaulle - 95430 Auvers-sur-Oise
After getting yourself a map at the tourist office
explore with the help of a signposted trail of the sites associated with the history of van Gogh in Auvers
Its route through the village is vividly evocative
One of the highlights of the walk is the church
famous worldwide thanks to the picture it inspired van Gogh to paint
and which is today in the collections of the musée d’Orsay in Paris
the trail takes you to the village cemetery
the resting place of the artist and his brother Theo
surrounded by the wheatfields that inspired his final painting
“picture-plaques” reproduce the artist’s works
Adults and children will enjoy spotting the exact place where he was standing
and comparing the landscapes of past and present
And why not finish this lovely afternoon with a little aperitif worthy of the Belle Epoque
dedicated to the favourite drink of 19th-century artists and poets
After exploring an incredible collection of objects and archives devoted to the demonic “Green Fairy”
you’ll have the opportunity to taste it
together with a demonstration of the ritual
you’ll be able to enjoy a well-earned rest at the l’HĂ´tel des Iris
you’ll find little nods to van Gogh and the Impressionist painters
21 rue du Général de Gaulle - 95430 Auvers-sur-Oise
After a restful night’s sleep and a good breakfast
the morning continues gently with a beautiful and peaceful ride on the Oise
An enthusiasts’ association has reconstructed the Botin
the boat-studio of the painter Charles-François Daubigny
you’ll also be able to view the countryside along the banks of the Oise which has inspired many artists
38 rue du général De Gaulle - 95430 Auvers-sur-oise
It’s back to dry land to explore Daubigny’s house-cum-studio
classed first as an Historic Monument and later granted the status of “Maison des Illustres”
Don’t miss the pretty garden that inspired one of van Gogh’s paintings
Head for the lovely terrace of the “Sous le Porche” restaurant
you can enjoy fresh seasonal produce and fortify yourself
Restaurant Sous le Porche 35 rue du Pois Auvers sur Oise
you can enjoy numerous activities in the vicinity of Auvers-sur-Oise
These are off-the-beaten-track experiences
enabling you to explore the places immortalised by painters in Auvers-sur-Oise and the surrounding area
you can also ride through the sublime countryside of the Regional Natural Park of the Vexin Français by following part of the route of the London-Paris Avenue Verte (Greenway)
It’s another way of exploring the countryside that has inspired so many artists
and an ideal way to round off your stay in this beautiful location

things were going to go far beyond the ordinary
In our newest episode of the “Don’t be a Tourist,” web series
we venture into forgotten war bunker hiding beneath a Parisian forest
We set off on foot into the woods of Mery-sur-Oise in the suburbs of Paris
where I’d been given a set of co-ordinates to locate the real-life Mad Hatter…
If you’ve followed my escapades in Paris over the past few years, you’ll recognise my eccentric French comrade, Monsieur Foulques Joubert, mastermind and founder behind the secretive group of Parisian party planners known as We are the Oracle.
we were about to embark on a true Parisian Odyssey.
No doubt, it was an occasion to enlist my trusty film-making companion of Red Paint Films to document the entire adventure
And yes– he had to lug all his equipment into the forest
through collapsed tunnels and up rock-faces to do it
We arrived at our bunker hidden in the forest
known during the Second Wold War by the Nazi code name “1401”
The Germans got to work in the old quarries here in 1943 during the occupation of Paris
They needed a place to store 700 V2 missiles that would be aimed directly at London
The missiles would be transported from Germany and brought here by train to Mery-sur-Oise just outside of Paris and unloaded onto a 300 meters platform
this bunker was built to hold the very weapons that could have changed the outcome of the war…
we were going to explore it by candlelight…
Scrambling over charred German military wrecks and collapsed quarry stones
we ventured deeper into the old tunnels where the temperatures lowered and the darkness engulfed us…
Until we eventually saw a mysterious light at the end of the tunnel…
as if stumbling upon the lost treasure in a buried temple
we finally arrived at our humble picnic spot– a glorious glittering feast for the eyes…
Surrounded by more candles than you’d care to count
complete with silverware and champagne glasses in the middle of a forgotten underground tunnel system
before that train full of V2 German missiles ever arrived
the allies found and conquered this bunker in 1944
We toasted to a victorious adventure and many more to come…
If you’re interested in exploring anything truly underground in Paris (and party somewhere a little more off-grid), I can only recommend that you become involved in the world of We are the Oracle

focuses on customer satisfaction and the sustainability of management combining transparency and performance for cost effectiveness
Even though it is at its first Climate Water Energy Plan
Sedif intends to reduce the energy consumption of its equipment and its greenhouse gas emissions and better preserve the resource
Make innovation a priority in all areas from production optimisation
network maintenance and emergency call-outs
management of customer responses to risk management
ServO - a hypervision and remote control centre equipped with artificial intelligence - was developed by Veolia Eau ĂŽle-de-France
the data of which is stored in a data centre
was created in 2011 by Veolia Eau ĂŽle-de-France which has been SEDIF's service manager for almost a century
a virtual platform that allows multiple operating systems to work together at the same time - provides a 360° view of the network
Average volume of drinking water supplied every day
Leak rate target for 2020 (against 12.5 in 2016)
Volume of data processed in real time by ServO
- The ServO hypervisor receives all the technical data from SEDIF's three main plants located in Méry-sur-Oise
and Neuilly-sur-Marne as well as secondary sites
and crosses nearly 1.250 billion bytes of real-time data
It can also detect deteriorations in water quality
altered by an unsuitable temperature or pressure or by the presence of chemicals
This is made possible by 200 sensors positioned in risk areas in the Oise
- ServO also uses a thousand other sensors to locate water leaks in the pipes which cannot be detected by a person
- ServO mobilises a hundred people: field operators in charge of repairing water cuts
and technicians in charge of the various PLCs
All of the data can be viewed by each operator on a computer
• With the implementation of extremely complex treatment processes to guarantee a high level of quality
and its quality exceeds European drinking water standards
• The Integrated Management System meets various certifications: ISO 9001
The drinking water network has an excellent efficiency rate which is close to 90 %
• The customer relationship has been innovated and modernised through the use of several tools:
the Clario brand strives to develop and strengthen customer-focused activities and clarify its customer policy;
the first Customer Relationship Centre NF Service-certified water service has over 560 000 customers;
over 90 % of consumers are satisfied with their water (source: observatory on public water of SEDIF)
• 59 % apprenticeship contracts signed (contractual objectives: 20 %)
• Veolia proposed to SEDIF the implementation of a comprehensive scheme accessible to all residents - L'Eau solidaire - whether they are direct customers of the service or not
The scheme provides emergency assistance to pay bills or charges related to the water service
assistance solutions to help resolve difficult situations (squats
and damage to co-owned property) and prevention solutions to raise the population's awareness
on reasonable water use and how to control their budget
Veolia devotes 1 % of the revenue from the sale of water to solidarity actions with the population served by SEDIF
This will represent 25 million euros over the duration of the contract
Site: 150 municipalities in 7 departments in the Paris area
• Management of major urban water services
• Management of three drinking water production plants
which associated SEDIF and its contractor Veolia Eau ĂŽle-de-France in December 2011
reflects a clear and ambitious commitment to combating climate change
making SEDIF the first carbon-neutral water service in the world: energy saving
offsetting emissions that cannot be avoided by reforestation
Committed to a dual approach of mitigation and adaptation
SEDIF has formalised all of its actions in its Climate Water Energy Plan (2017)
12 % of the population in ĂŽle-de-France live below the poverty line
SEDIF is the first water union in France to implement a large-scale scheme to help customers who have difficulty paying their water bills
Veolia Eau ĂŽle-de-France manages this scheme
direct assistance in paying water bills called Aide Eau Solidaire
which has been available to private customers since 2011
as part of the experiment under the Brottes law
including non-customer occupants of multi-unit residential buildings who have difficulty in paying their water utility bills.
