scientists from the Paris Observatory weer present at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory (Arizona)for the inauguration of a prototype of the « Schwarzschild-Couder » type
in view of the upcoming international Cherenkov Telescope Array - CTA project
Members of the upcoming international CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) project
two scientists from the Paris Observatory were invited to Arizona for the inauguration of a new American prototype
Following the small French prototype developed on the Meudon site of the Paris Observatory
this new American model was created on the basis of the « Schwarzschild-Couder » two mirror technology; the difference is that it is of intermediate size
Destined for the study of cosmic gamma radiation,
CTA is one of the most ambitious ground based projects of the XXIst century
This upcoming observatory will in the end involve a flotilla of 118 telescopes on the Earth’s surface
the telescopes will be grouped in two networks: one will be in the northern hemisphere
Various kinds of technology are currently being tried
The two mirror idea was proposed a in the last century by Karl Schwarzschild (1873-1916)
and was subsequently optimized by André Couder (1897-1979) who was at that time an optical astronomer at the Paris Observatory
the « Schwarzschild-Couder » two mirror technology had never been tried in astronomy
and notably the technical difficulties of making aspherican and not conical mirrors
this technology is theoretically capable of reaching the theoretical limit of «gamma ray» astronomy
Astronomers became interested in this technology for the CTA optical telescope system since it leads to a significant improvement in the quality of wide field images
compared to the single mirror telescopes used till now for ground based gamma ray astronomy
the secondary mirror corrects the aberrations and reduces the scale of the sensitive surface in the focal plane
There is another advantage: it also enables one to use the new silicon photo-multipliers (SiPM)
which are well adapted for this purpose and are cheaper than the traditional photo-mulipliers
With the inauguration of this new prototype in the U.S.A.
the number of Schwarzschild-Couder type telescopes installed in the world for the CTA has now increased to three: this includes the French prototype inaugurated at Meudon in 2015 as well as a 4m Italian prototype installed on the slopes of Etna
The rest will be installed in the northern hemisphere
Already the very first large size telescope has been officially selected for the southern hemisphere CTA and was set up in the Canary Islands in 2018
31 institutes are contributing to the CTA

Kingfisher Resorts had applied to extend the property twice previously
Plans to extend Hotel Meudon in Cornwall have been submitted for the third time with its owner saying expansion is a “necessary step to underpin the sustainability of the hotel”
Kingfisher Resorts, which acquired the 30-bedroom hotel in 2020
had applied to extend the property twice previously
but both requests were refused by Cornwall Council’s planning committee
In both 2022 and 2024 Kingfisher applied to build 10 new holiday cottages in the grounds of the site
For its most recent application the proposed development has been reduced to six holiday units
Cornwall Council refused the earlier applications as it said the proposals failed to conserve and enhance the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
Kingfisher Resorts reduced the number of holiday cottages and made changes to ensure they were obscured from view
The proposal also includes the development of a new 20m outdoor heated swimming pool
Kingfisher Resorts has said the development would create 31 more jobs and ensure the property’s financial viability in the medium- to long-term
The application read: “The proposal is a necessary step in securing the future legacy and medium to long term sustainability of the hotel business and the historic sub-tropical ornamental valley garden
"The provision of additional lettable keys to the hotel inventory is an integral component of this strategy.”
The owner has said the current 30-bedroom hotel is too small to support a “year-round long term viable business and upkeep of the valley garden sustainably”

The construction of a new scientific instrument is starting on the Meudon site: the small prototype of a Cerenkov telescope
In preparation for an ambitious international project - CTA
a ground based observatory for the study of very high energy cosmic rays - this telescope
will exploit the so-called "Schwarzschild-Couder" optical arrangement
which has so far never been used in astronomy
There are many sources of extreme gamma radiation in the Cosmos
astrophysicists do not fully understand the processes which can acccelerate particles to energies such that they can emit radiation 100 billion times more energetic than visible light
They could thereby learn more about the physics of compact objects such as black holes
a new international scale observatory is being born: the «Cerenkov Telescope Array» (CTA)
a network of on the order of one hundred telescopes on two sites (south and north)
Its construction is planned for the period 2015 to 2020; first light
but with of course an incomplete installation
the coordination of the GATE (GAmma-ray Telescope Elements) project has been entrusted to the Observatoire de Paris
via its Laboratoire Univers et Théories - LUTh and Instrument Pole (in the Département Galaxies
Five laboratories of the Île-de-France are involved in the creation of prototypes for the CTA (telescope
on the Meudon site of the Observatoire de Paris
has begun the construction of a "demonstrator" telescope for the future large
the cabling and the shelter have been installed
This will be a challenge for the scientific teams of the LUTh and the instrument pole
who will have to create a small prototype (SST
which stands for Small Size Telescope) of a Cerenkov telescope
The primary mirror will be 4 meters in diameter
It will use the so-called "Schwarzschild-Couder" optical arrangement
which should help optimize the scientific return obtained with the CTA at extreme energies
When gamma rays penetrate the terrestrial atmosphere
they produce transient showers of particles
The Cerenkov telescopes observe the flashes of light produced by these particles during their flight
which enables the characteristics of the gamma ray sources to be determined
These sources include supernova remnants
This project is coordinated by the Observatoire de Paris (the LUTh and the instrument pole) with the support of the Région Île-de-France
of the CNRS (INSU and IN2P3) and of the CEA (IRFU)
Sayède together with other members of the LUTh

What do you get when you convert a former blimp hangar (the world’s first) into an exhibition space, combine it with a hexagonal lake designed by André Le Nôtre for the royal Meudon estate, and round it off with a sculpture park forming an artistic pathway around the water? Hangar Y – the latest must-visit destination in the Paris area
just 45 minutes by public transportation from the Eiffel Tower
The name of the site is a reference to the imposing metallic structure that was previously used as an assembly hall and storage location for dirigibles
The organization is looking to use the 25 acres of land to achieve the appeal of both the Grand Palais and the Palais de Tokyo
The first of these Parisian institutions is currently being renovated and usually hosts the capital’s biggest exhibitions
while the second is a shrine to contemporary art in the 16th arrondissement
The history of Hangar Y began with the 1878 Exposition Universelle
Designed to be an annex of the Galerie des Machines on the Champ-de-Mars
the building was moved the following year to the Parc de Meudon
the building in brick and iron is illuminated by large windows and stands as a testament to the industrial architecture of the second half of the 19th century
The central nave is 85 feet high – more than enough to accommodate military balloons
and was even used as Marc Chagall’s studio
The painter moved there in 1964 to assemble the 13 panels for the new ceiling of the Opéra Garnier
Another equally unique space – an open-air art trail – is found next to this metallic cathedral
A sculpture by Adel Abdessemed marks the start
Die Taubenpost depicts a pair of carrier pigeons over six feet high carrying explosive charges on their backs instead of letters
Other surprises line the forest path snaking around the lake
such as a curious little house built with kitchen utensils by Subodh Gupta
a thousand-year-old olive tree in white enamel by Ugo Rondinone
a life-size dinosaur footprint by Laurent Le Deunff
In total, 19 of today’s leading international names offer “a poetic interlude in a historic, iconic site in the Paris region.” Visitors will also enjoy the bookstore on the theme of French aeronautics, a modular space in wood and steel designed to host conferences and workshops, and two restaurants – an informal outdoor eatery under the trees serving tapas and ice cream
a “modern brasserie” led by Michelin-star chef Guillaume Sanchez
featuring fish and shellfish specialties with a waterside terrace
which was the first Parisian museum to break from traditional art spaces
It also hopes to become an incubator for talent across multiple creative disciplines
Having returned to the French capital after several years in Los Angeles
choreographer Benjamin Millepied recently installed his Paris Dance Project here
the former New York City Ballet star aims to build bridges between classical and contemporary dance
while training the next generation of choreographers as he did in California with the L.A
This mission is perfectly in keeping with Hangar Y’s vocation to write a “new creative history at the crossroads of art

which might be better described as The Hotel Inspector Repeats
since the bulk of the programme is made up of footage from a previous series
with Polizzi dropping by towards the end to see how things have come on since
because turning around a failing hotel – or failing to – takes the sort of time that TV producers can't spare
The original broadcast is tidily compressed into highlights
and the intervening gap provides a reveal worth revealing (this is also often true of Grand Designs Revisited)
you won't remember the programme from the first time around
It's been two years since Polizzi first turned up at the Meudon Hotel in Cornwall
an underperforming family concern run by father-and-son team Harry and Mark Pilgrim
including extensive gardens and a private beach
a weird pricing structure (standard room £110 per night
"The AA took away our rosette a long time ago," said Harry
Mark already had a firm grasp of the nature of the Meudon's difficulties
"It's probably fair to say that our customer base is between 60 and dead," he told Polizzi
perfectly understood his role as a reality TV subject: "She's probably going to suggest a lot of changes that
who also doubles as "The Fixer" on BBC2
is not an interventionist of the Gordon Ramsay stripe
calls people darling a lot and is wont to lay a hand on a sagging shoulder
I'm pretty sure she could convince me to borrow an enormous amount of money from the bank just by looking at me with understanding eyes
"The decorator deserves to be bitch-slapped," she said
which was the type of remark we were still tolerating two years ago
which is The Hotel Inspector's principal advantage
Harry the father is resistant to change and unwilling to relinquish the reins to his son
has the weary air and resigned wit of a hostage to inheritance: he has nowhere to go but nowhere
"No matter how far you climb up the managerial ladder," he says
"your hand is never far from the S-bend." Everyone can relate to that
even people who have had the foresight not to run a failing hotel
It's amazing how many essentially existential problems can be solved by ripping up some swirly carpet and hanging new curtains
by having Mark's sister Gaye step in and run the place
Gaye had apparently not set foot in the hotel in 15 years but
was moved to stage an intervention of her own
effectively retiring the old man and transferring Mark's talents to the garden
darling!" said Polizzi as she toured the revamped Meudon
A scrap of the horrible carpet remains in reception
the wonky bedside tables and Mark and Harry's mildly toxic working relationship are all gone
Over on BBC4, Dan Cruickshank is inspecting royal palaces, looking with a kinder eye on both the careworn and the out of place, from the abandoned grace-and-favour apartments of Hampton Court to the bemusing interactive displays currently gracing Kensington Palace. In this, the middle instalment of Majesty and Mortar: Britain's Great Palaces
which really got going in the Victorian era but has its roots in the Restoration
when Charles II assembled a bunch of old armour into a historical parade called the Line of Kings
The armour sat astride wooden horses carved
once I'd checked that apes of the family Hylobatidae were both capable of delicate woodcarving and only too happy to engage in it
referring to the 17th-century sculptor whose work is all over St Paul's cathedral
The Sunday TimesSouth of Falmouth — so definitely in the right ballpark — we finally got the sat-nav out
I don’t usually like to do this until I’m 100 per cent sure that I’ve got us lost
in goes “Hotel Meudon” and out pops the time to destination: ten and a half hours
You could have refilled the car’s fuel tank with the tension
The route being mapped out was to Meudon near Paris
via some homesick Napoleonic prisoners of war who worked on and christened a nearby farmhouse
But the sat-nav confusion somehow felt apt — this was very definitely under-the-radar Cornwall
“Be more than you seem to be,” Frederick the Great said
and there’s always something satisfying about hotels that adopt this ethos
tarmac — first impressions here are less upmarket hotel
But as guests (and perhaps the odd baffled outpatient) quickly discover
what lies beyond this anodyne façade is a property rich with beauty
in a setting that could go toe to toe with the finest in Cornwall
Paddling Frenchman’s Creek with Koru KayakingFirst
let’s talk about the eight acres of subtropical gardens
steep-sided valley that cradles an elegant sliver of distant ocean
and so exuberant you’d almost be advised to pack a machete with your SPF50 on those walks down to the private beach
Nearest the hotel all is relatively tame: pristine fingers of grass pointing seawards
But pretty soon things go all Jurassic Park: giant
thick-trunked tree ferns; contorted roots rearing up like kids’ climbing frames; rhododendrons in which you could happily hide a house; the huge
purply tusks of giant viper’s bugloss; Gunnera manicata (giant rhubarb) with leaves the diameter of a golf umbrella
used the gardens like a horticultural “sweet shop”
utilising their Falmouth Packet postal ships to bring back all manner of flora from around the world
Given the fabled Cornish microclimate and the sheltered valley setting
most of these alien newcomers had little trouble putting down roots
it’s a tropical paradise all right,” says Ashley Gray
whose impromptu tours are already much in demand
referencing the public gardens a couple of miles west
But whereas the beach at Trebah is a crowded affair
with an ice-cream queue as long as the Helford River
Meudon’s strand — the charmingly named Bream Cove — is largely empty
at least: just a couple of families with dogs (the beach
some South West Coast Path hikers soothing sore soles
and one chap lying face down on the tiny pebbles
“I may well do unless I find what I’m looking for.”
it transpires — the basis of his wife’s jewellery business
The beauty of Hotel Meudon’s valley-prow setting is only really apparent as you hack your way back up the jungle path: far enough to feel secluded in those gardens yet close enough to the beach for a cheeky swim after dinner — and
for the breaking waves to be audible above the crepuscular chatter of birdsong and anguished peacock cries
the hotel is redolent of a benign Scottish baron’s weekend home
The roof is crenellated; warming red brick flows into a glass-roofed
colonnaded lower floor housing the expansive dining room
The building clings to the side of the valley
seemingly held in place by a concertinaed umbilical cord that leads to the Sanctuary Suite spa and the hotel’s 29 bedrooms
In its previous incarnation — also a hotel — the property attracted clientele who tended to be loyal and creaking
so zinging things up and bringing the average age down are priorities
Expect playful colours and 1960s-style geometric patterns offsetting Parker Knoll chairs and corpulent window-seat cushions in the drawing room
bespoke furniture and boldly contemporary artwork in the guest rooms
and a cocktail list that includes an aged Old Fashioned and a dangerously moreish spiced mojito
is just a fridge door away from being a speakeasy
Family pets are welcome at the hotelLEE SEARLESigned and framed menus from the world’s best restaurants
add an inventive flavour to the walls around the staircase (and a reminder that El Bulli really was quite something)
the idea of “the chairman” — Nigel Chapman
which counts Woolley Grange near Bath and the Ickworth in Suffolk among its stable
is fixated on using the very best of the county’s natural larder
dill and olive salad with anchovy dressing; spiced roast lamb rump
bulgar and pumpkin seeds — you’ll struggle to find many ingredients in these dishes that originated beyond Cornwall
will almost certainly try to talk you into the wondrous chariot de fromages (“cheese trolley” in Cornish)
statement-socks type who has worked with Gordon Ramsay and Jason Atherton
and he loves the theatre of the thing — you’ll love the potent Cornish blue
Mouser is training a young and inexperienced team (it’s true what you’ve read about the post-Brexit hospitality staffing crisis); the chocolate “mouse” on the kids’ menu
which caused concern among the younger members of our party
But wrinkles will be ironed out and what staff lack in polish they make up for in enthusiasm — and who better for tips on what to see and do in this corner of Cornwall than some scrupulously polite former Falmouth University students
Our tips included a majestic kayaking expedition up the Helford to the Frenchman’s Creek made famous by Daphne du Maurier (Roger Taylor’s riverfront estate caused more excitement for my Queen-obsessed girls)
and a crossing on the Helford Ferry for a pint in the salty village boozer the Shipwrights Arms
Falmouth is within easy reach should you wish to remind yourself that — away from this little pocket of impenetrable calm — Cornwall is in the throes of a frenzied staycation summer
Duncan Craig was a guest of Hotel Meudon, which has B&B doubles from £119, Trebah Garden (adult £12, child £6) and Koru Kayaking

(…un jour je raconterai comment François Mitterrand
a accepté ma requête de décerner la Légion d’honneur au GMI Boris Spassky
et…) Spassky surfaces – on Russia 1TV’s Tonight Show CHESSBASE NEWS 30.01.2013 – You read about it last August: 75-year-old former World Champion fled from his house in Meudon near Paris ..
Last weekend’s Tonight Show (Сегодня Вечером), a top Saturday programme on the main Russian TV Channel 1, was dedicated to the 75th Anniversary of Vladimir Vysotsky
and actor whose career had an immense and enduring effect on Russian culture
Vysotsky did a song on the 1972 Spassky-Fischer match
which was the reason why Boris Spassky was invited by the popular television host Andrey Malakhov to appear on the show
including 1981 Oscar winner Vladimir Menshov
In the following video of the show you need to jump forward to 64 min 30 sec and run it until 69 min 45 sec
Our colleague Valery Golubenko has kindly made an English language transcription of this segment
with assistance provided by Steve Giddins:
You can also watch the show at the original 1TV site
Television host: Another song of Vladimir Vysotsky was written under the impression of nationwide foreboding before the chess match between Boris Spassky and Robert Fischer.
Then, 66 minutes into the segment: « And today in our studio the legendary chess player, world chess champion from 1969 to 1972 years, Boris Spassky! Boris Vassilievich, good evening! How do you feel about the song that Vysotsky dedicated to you? »
Boris Spassky: I just listened to this song. I must say that this song didn’t impressed me at all. The real drama of our match touched me so intensely, I felt all the small details. It seemed to me that this song… [Television Host: … over simplifies the situation?] Yes, in a manner of speaking…
Television Host: And did you manage to meet and touch base with Vysotsky in person, and tell him that?
Television host: We have heard in more recent times that at moments of great stress, Vladimir Semyonovich sought help from drink. And what about you, as a chess player? Indeed, you also need to relax. I know how huge stress you do experience before games…
Boris Spassky: I didn’t experience any stress. I was sure I could win this match.
Television host: So you didn’t experience any insomnia or something else? Iron nerves…
Boris Spassky: Yes, I was in quite good shape [applause]. Nevertheless I was crushed by Fischer in this match. So, the real hero of this song is in fact Bobby Fischer, with whom I was on very friendly terms, by the way. He was my friend.
Television host: But now you live in Russia, I cannot but ask you? Because you are really… [broken phrase]
Boris Spassky: Yes, yes, I live in Russia.
Television host: With France that’s it? You are finished?
Boris Spassky: With France, yes… [applause] When I’m in Russia I miss France, when I’m in France I miss Russia. Likely, the same happened with Vladimir Semyonovich, I guess.
Television host: If Vysotsky were alive today, to whom or what events would he dedicate his songs?
Boris Spassky: This question is too difficult for me. So, I resign [applause]. I cannot answer it.
Television host: Boris Spassky was not the only Russian whom Vladimir Vysotsky dedicated his songs…
Closing statement by Boris Spassky [77 min 27 sec]: In my opinion
Vladimir Semyonovich possessed an advanced personal quality of the social responsibility (Voice Off: It is true)
it’s felt in all his songs even just now…

paris-based serero architects has won the competition for a new cultural center in meudon-la-foret
the building features an organic concrete shell with punched out windows inspired by the nature of tree canopies
following the existing orthogonal grid of the district
the center fits into the surrounding urban context while still having an identity
a key component of the design was to delimit space
the 300-seat auditorium stands in the center of the complex with public and administrative programs bordering the core
natural light is widely facilitated through the trapezoidal windows
the curtain wall on the ground floor and the sheds on the roof of the studios
the sheds are equipped with lamps which are connected to photosensitive cells to gradually switch on to make up for the lack of sunlight at the end of the day
an important element of the project is the roof
which is constructed out of white concrete with bits of local gravel and limestone
integrated into its performance are devices for controlling the internal light and thermal atmosphere of the building
photovoltaic panels will be installed on the south side of the slopped roof to harvest energy for electrical use

AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function
but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style
Off the beaten track and with access to a secluded beach and acres of subtropical gardens
the newly revamped Hotel Meudon is a bit of a Cornish coastal gem
Read our review
Follow the coast south from Falmouth, leaving behind the bustle of the town and just before you come to the Helford River, you’ll find Hotel Meudon
Revamped and revitalised under new ownership in 2021
this previously family owned hotel has kept so many of the things that the loyal (but ageing) clientele returned for year after year whilst gently bringing things up to date
Much of the nicest original mid-century furniture has been retained and given a new lease of life
as well as other modern vintage touches throughout the hotel
All rooms have been updated and redesigned
and glass balconies offering inviting places to relax to maximise the Cornish sunlight
as well as an Inland Facing Suite with two bedrooms and two bathrooms
The drawing room and Freddie’s cocktail bar can be found in the older main building
which dates back to the 1800s with the main hotel from the mid-1970s
complete with inside grapevine serves up inventive and delicious food showcasing the very best Cornwall has to offer (head chef David Waters really is spoilt for choice down here) including lunch (small bites)
all of which are served to residents and non-residents alike
The jewel in Hotel Meudon’s crown is that it is set in eight acres of subtropical gardens
at the bottom of which you will find a secluded beach
Grab your coffee and treats from the Bream Box at the bottom of the garden as you pass the gate by the South West Coast Path; the beach is perfect for wild swimming
or just a lovely place to while away an afternoon with a book
That’s if you don’t get distracted by a lounger in the garden
or even on one of the many Ercol chairs in the conservatory like ‘bridge’ reading room
as it is a bijou selection of well executed treatments including massages and manicure/pedicures in the Sanctuary Suite
Dog-friendly (including gardens and beach) as well as welcoming to families
the hotel also has accessible rooms and a self-catering cottage in what was once the Head Gardener’s residence
