Police have arrested more than 20 people involved in drug trafficking
marking the second major operation within a week
were based on encrypted communication records from the Sky ECC and EncroChat apps
which have been linked to organized crime activities
Many of those arrested are alleged members of AEK football fan groups
with prior involvement in violent incidents
including a notorious clash in May 2017 at the Panthessaliko Stadium in central Greece between AEK and PAOK fans
where he faces charges related to the trafficking of 1.5 tons of cocaine in 2017
The criminals used encrypted devices and apps to conduct their illicit business
with messages self-destructing after being sent
The cost of obtaining the devices was significant – around €1,000 for the phone and €1,500 monthly for the service
The encrypted communications were cracked by Europol in collaboration with national authorities from France
providing critical information for the investigation
Police operations revealed 70 instances of drug trafficking from March 2020 to March 2021
with drugs like cannabis and cocaine being smuggled from Spain to Albania and Greece via trucks with legitimate cargo
Profits from this operation were laundered through car rental companies in Athens and on the island of Mykonos
Some of the accused were also linked to illegal money transfer businesses
Authorities have also uncovered that some of the arrested individuals had ties to organized violence
with several having participated in violent clashes between rival football fan groups
the central figure in the network has a history of involvement in numerous violent incidents
including clashes with Atromitos supporters in 2016

Drivers in France come across many road signs
mostly linked to traffic rules and speed limits
some may spot a blue and white sign with the words ‘ville prudente’ when entering some communes.
whilst not one you need to learn from the Code de la route (French road safety laws) is related to driving.
It is awarded by the ‘Prévention Routière’
an association that promotes road safety across the country.
The association gives the signs to communes that have taken an active part in attempting to reduce road accidents in their borders.
Read more: Record number of driving fines in France confirmed in latest official report
and currently around 530 communes have received it.
The signs themselves have between one and five blue hearts underneath the writing
determining the level of the award received
Communes can receive a sign for “road improvements
prevention initiatives aimed at local residents and staff training,” said the association’s Regional Director in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Philippe Surot
He made the comments during a recent awards ceremony
where 11 communes in the region were given a sign.
Marsannay-la-Côte (Côte-d’Or) was one of these communes.
“We have reduced the speed limit in areas that have been drawn to our attention by local residents, particularly near schools,” said the commune’s mayor Jean-Michel Verpillot (quoted in France3)
“This was a joint effort with the municipal police
But we have also provided information to motorists,” he added.
Another recipient at the awards evening was the commune of Montfleur (Jura)
Although the village has just 160 inhabitants
a major secondary road passes through it.
“Some motorists avoid the chicanes we have installed to drive at 140 km/h
right through the village,” said mayor Jean-Claude Nevers.
He decided to add a permanent ‘reward light’ on the road.
“‘The light is always red and only turns green when the driver or lorry has complied with the 30 km/h speed limit,” he said.

The awards ceremony took place in Gevrey-Chambertin
a town of 3,000 people with two blue hearts on its road safety sign.
so “decided to focus on signage and equipment,” to reduce accidents
22 CCTV cameras are now in place throughout the commune to support fining reckless drivers.
“The idea is not to annoy people… Road safety cannot be fully achieved if there are no penalties
that is part of the system,” said Mr Lucand.
The city is also building 3km of cycle paths
If you believe your commune is worthy of a ‘ville prudente’ sign, you can visit the ‘ville prudente’ section of the association’s website to apply.

your father Nicolas is a legend in the bodyboarding world
2x European champ and multiple French champ
What was it like to grow up with such an inspiration by your side
Ethan Capdeville: I had the chance to grow up in the world of bodyboarding
spending all my Summers at my father’s surf school
I spent a lot of time surfing in front of all those guys who inspired me a lot
and share a lot of sessions with all of these legends and that helped me a lot in my progression and my motivation
my dad was literally my idol and he inspired me a lot
He is definitely the person who had the most impact on my career and on my riding
He never put pressure on me to do bodyboarding
competition or whatever and I think today he is very proud and happy for me
He is definitely the person who had the most impact on my career and on my riding!”
you grow up side by side with your brother Noah who is a bodyboard shredder as well
That’s a home and family that breathes bodyboarding on a daily basis 24/7
How important was that for you to come this far
my brother Noah was also a very good bodyboarder
Easily one of the best young French athletes
he finished 3rd at the Pro Junior Viana World Championship in 2018
He still bodyboards very well but now only for fun
He decided to move to Paris to finish his studies
We were always trying to be the best during our sessions
so we developed a healthy competition between us
We formed a very close crew with my brother
We always pushed each other to go for bigger waves
to try new tricks… and it was epic to share the passion with such close people
were always trying to be the best during our free sessions
so we developed a healthy competition between us”
How’s bodyboarding in France these days
How’s the industry and contest scene
EC: Some guys say that bodyboarding is already dead
but what I see and what I experience doesn’t go that way
but the sport is always present in our country
there are always some guys in the water with bodyboards
there are more bodyboarders than surfers. In france we have the chance to have some very good guys who are trying to develop the sport
guys like Nicolas Padois who has been creating a lot of very good bodyboarders for 20 years
Yoan Canevet “Txiken” who has created his 100% bodyboard school
All of these guys do a lot for our sport and I’m very impressed and grateful for all they do!Regarding the industry
but the industry looks good with big brands like Pride
and Sen No Sen who have been established in France for many years and are still here
there are more bodyboarders than surfers”
At the moment you seem to be totally focused on the comp side
After being ranked 4th in the world last year
with three semifinal appearances (Antofagasta
I have wanted to be on the Tour since I was a child
and I even participated in some APB Pro Junior events
My goal was to be in the top 16 with the best
Following the World Tour was literally one of my dreams when I was a kid
and I really want to thank everyone who helped me to achieve this goal
I participated in 5 out of 8 contests and finished 28th
I had the chance to follow all the events and finished 4th
I have done a lot of work since my first year
In the first 3 events of my life on the tour (Iquique
Antofagasta and Brazil) I was eliminated in the first round
which kept me motivated to keep working in that way
I didn’t really realize the ranking at the end of the year
I was in the top 5 with guys who have inspired me the most since I was a kid
I know I need to achieve and learn a lot of things
but I really want to win an event this year
“IBC it’s the organization with the best bodyboarders in the world
There is not any other organization with the same level of bodyboarding”
The French gang on tour is very tight and friendly
Having the companion of your friends when travelling and during the competitions makes all the difference for you
we have a very cool crew with the French guys
It’s very cool to travel with all the boys
We have a very cool competitiveness between us
Max created the Instagram page without a real idea of what we were going to do with it
we developed the page and created some projects
we have been trying to create a clip for each event with some competition footage
but also showcasing all the free surfing and the behind the scenes that people don’t see
I really think that creating fun projects like that is very important for the sport of Bodyboarding
Everything we do is directly inspired by the OZ guys from back in the day
“My ultimate goal is to be world champ
Which wave/spot would you like to see on tour and compete on
EC: I really want to have Pipeline on tour because it’s the most iconic wave in the world
Winning a world event at Pipe can be compared to winning a world title
I don’t know if I would prefer to win Pipeline with epic conditions like in 2012 or win a world title
I think it’s the only wave in the world that can create this kind of dilemma
“Winning a world event at Pipe can be compared to winning a world title
Being an ambassador for a brand that cares about the environment is like a dream come true… right
I also have the chance to be supported by Autoconsomation
a business localised in Mimizan who sell solar panels
Being supported by French brands that share the same values as me is very important
So i’m very proud to represent these brands
“It’s very important as a surfer to be mindful of the environmental crisis
We need to respect nature and the ocean because it’s our playground”
And what does it mean to also have the support of the Stealth Army and Bodyboard Center
what can you tell us about your new signature board model
EC: Since this year, I have had the pleasure to also ride for Stealth and BC+
I have been in another brand for a long time
but I felt it was time for me to change and explore something new
It’s very rewarding to be supported by these brands
and I think my image aligns well with theirs. This season
There are two reasons for this name: Firstly
because there are hardly any young riders who have their own pro model
so we think this board can bring some freshness
the name of the board is also a reference to my father
The logo of the board is related to its significance; we want to show that I am very determined and motivated
“(…) there are hardly any young riders who have their own pro model
so we think this board can bring some freshness”
One last question regarding the soon to be released clip New Blood
which has the same name as your board model
EC: Can’t imagine a better question to finish with
and Stealth on a video project to announce my pro model
The video is 8 minutes long (teaser below)
We’ve showcased different lifestyles from what’s typically seen in the world of bodyboarding and surfing
Drawing inspiration from Hip Hop/Rap and Rock
we aimed to create a unique image and style for the video
We’ve put serious work into this clip
Everything will be posted on my Instagram in June
so stay tuned because something cool is coming and my pro model will also be available in June
The new paper machine will be suplied by Andritz and is said to replace three existing paper machines at the site
French kraft and sack kraft paper manufacturer Gascogne Papier plans to install a new
big kraft paper paper machine at the Mimizan site in south-western France
According to Austria's technology group Andritz
the company has received a corresponding order from Gascogne Papier with commissioning of the new PM scheduled for 2025
With a web width of 6.8 m and design speed of 1,300 m/min
the new paper machine is geared for a production of 125,000 tpy of unbleached (machine-glazed) MG kraft paper in basis weight of 25 to 120 g/m²
This would be the "widest MG paper machine worldwide" and would "set a new industry benchmark with the highest capacity for uncoated MG papers," writes Andritz
Gascogne Papier's Mimizan mill houses four paper machines with a total production capacity of 150,000 tpy
The company's PM 3 produces sack kraft paper in basis weights of 70-155 g/m²
PM 5 and PM 6 produce unbleached MG kraft papers in basis weights of 32-125 g/m²
the new paper machine will replace three of the mill's four paper machines
"The main target of the investment is to establish a multi-grade production line
capable of producing more than 80 different grades of ribbed and unribbed paper," Andritz explained

“Winston Churchill found life on the French Riviera so appealing that he availed himself of the invitations of several owners of villas which dotted the coastline.” Nancy Smith
his painting hobby allowed him to quiet the “black dog”
Extraordinary accomplishments—a remarkable life indeed
Churchill saw Villa Rosemary (the central motif) in January
was worried about Winston and his obvious depression invited him to Cherkley Leatherhead
Aiken commented; “I was disturbed because he was an obvious victim of depression and forebodings that distressed him
In consequence I asked him to spend a day with me at Cherkly
in the hope that I could distract his mind…I had noticed that he had placed on the car an easel and a box of colours…The house was empty at the time
But Churchill’s easel was soon out and planted on the terrace
where we looked out on the view that had fascinated so many politicians…It was obvious that it {painting} absorbed his mind
He could not talk while he painted and did not want to talk
I was glad to see him so engaged in such a calm amusement.”
Lord Beaverbrook would often host Churchill at his home
situated above the coastal path in Cap-d’Ail
It was one of Churchill’s favorite locations on the Côte d’Azur
Churchill was made Maire Honoraire de Cap-d’Ail by the Commune of Cap-d’Ail in 1952 for his friendship with France during WWII
He captured the rocky coast on canvas and over the years painted a series of the Parasol pines that “overhang” the coast—images de cartes postales très français
I can imagine him sitting there painting with the soothing sound of the waves lapping below
I’ve spent hours over the years quietly sitting listening to the gentle or crashing waves on the French coast—for me having a meal near the water’s edge with the hypnotic sound of the waves is heavenly
walking down the harbour steps in St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat
At the time he was The Chancellor of the Exchequer
Photo from Winston Churchill Painting on the French Riviera
Violet Bonham Carter and Churchill were guests of Claude Lowther at Herstmonceux in Sussex
There she observed Churchill in the garden painting
She related what once she saw; “As he painted
his frustration evaporated…I was suddenly aware that this was the only occupation that I had ever seen him practice in silence…rapt in intense appraisal
assessment of the scene meant to capture and transfer to his canvas.”
Montag took Churchill to the galleries where he was introduced to the Impressionists
The style of the Impressionists’ school is obvious in his work
Churchill and Montag went on many painting outings— remained friends until Montag’s death in 1956
in 1917 where they and their children would be safe from Zeppelin raids
He would later have to sell it because of financial difficulties—sold to his friend Sir Ian Hamilton
A mews building in the back was converted into a studio
In Jean Hamilton’s diaries she wrote; “Winston painted dull pictures all day and was very happy.” Coombs mentions that it included one of the Orangery
Her observation of Churchill was while he was painting at a large weekend party at Panshanger
Rafferty states that he was painting the Voille d’Or Hotel and Restaurant
“a rich Cuban who kept him (Churchill) supplied with cigars and brandy.”
Churchill painted and hunted wild boar in Mimizan
had a house on the coast—this was but one of many trips to the Duke’s house
and then to Amalfi and Cassis in the South of France to paint
Two paintings associated with Cassis are The Lighthouse
in 1910 moved into a house in Cassis named Pierrefroide
He would paint up on the rooftop terrace with the iconic view of the port and lighthouse
Landes painting was given to the First World War Prime Minister
John Lavery and Churchill would be guests at Mimizan during the years where they painted the same subject
These paintings were hung at the Duke of Westminster’s Lochmore Lodge in Sutherland
was given to the First World War Prime Minister
Lavery commenting on the two of them painting the same subject in his autobiography; “We have stood at the same motif
and in spite of my trained eye and knowledge of possible difficulties
with characteristic fearlessness and freedom from convention
has time and again shown me how to do things
Had he chosen painting instead of statesmanship I believe he would have been a great master with the brush.”
Churchill with Coco Chanel at Mimizan–two audacious people born in the 19th century that greatly impacted the 20th century
Painted in the afternoon in the Spring of 1920
Churchill observed how Lavery interpreted the light and varied colors of the Mediterranean onto the canvas
Churchill writes; “Nature presents itself through the agency off these points of light
each of which sets up the vibrations peculiar to its colour
the brilliancy of a picture must therefore depend partly upon the frequency with which these points are found on any given area of the canvas
and partly on their just relation to one another.”
Churchill and Lavery traveled to St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat in 1921
staying at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap d’Ail for one month
Two lovely paintings from 1921 are The Pergola
It has been put forward that it was on this trip with Lavery
Churchill’s love of the Rivera and keen passion to paint on the Côte d’Azur was firmly and permanently established
what a perfectly wonderful place to paint on the Côte d’Azuz
whereas you look to the right the Cap is dotted with some of the most magnificent villas in all of the Côte d’Azur—treasures of France
La Villa Santo Sospel is right up the hill where you’ll find a Cocteau Surprise on the walls
Just to sit by the small port on a sunny day
had been sad and difficult for Churchill as his mother and two months later his daughter
Clementine and Winston went to Dunbarton Castle in Scotland as guests of the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland where they recovered from their loss and he painted
in 1922—reconstruction was completed in 1924
besides draining the lake making a dam for a swimming pool
he built brick walls around the garden—bricklaying was another one of his hobbies
He was of the opinion that one should have two or more hobbies
His time was spent visiting friends and family on weekends and holidays abroad—France especially
Churchill painting at Cannes Harbour–always protected by security
Churchill stayed in the Villa Lou Mas belonging to the Countess of Essex
(the Villa Rosmary is the motif of the painting)—in the distance is Cap-d’Ail and Monaco
along with Edward Marsh and Charles Montag
also made their way to Biarritz and painted at St-Jean-de-Luz
he and Clementine rented Villa Rêve d’Or in Cannes and took the family
They stayed for six months during the winter months
Out of the gloom they went into the winter sunshine on the Côte d’Azur
A dramatic view of the Atlantic near Biarritz
La Bonne Auberge was one of Churchill’s favorite restaurants in Antibes
and especially oignons cébette dipped in salt
He would send his driver to the owner’s house where they grew the vegetables for the restaurant to get a box of them and in return
The restaurant was known for drawing in celebrities such as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor
Winston Churchill was mesmerized and enchanted by the Côte d’Azur
Subject matter that very often included stunning views of the sea with reflections on the water
He longed to capture what he saw on canvas
creating a collection of souvenirs from his trips that took him all over the world—from pointu bateau to the Pyramids
I can tell a story behind every painting I have done of my moments on the Côte d’Azur—as I am sure Churchill could have done when walking around his gallery or studio
Churchill painting–what he loved to do
He wore a Stetson hat it’s said from 1930 forward
The colour blue was a favorite of Churchill
a heavenly colour we all admire so much.” Paul Rafferty comments that aides sometimes squeezed 15 colors on his palette—of course
“to make the straight and horizontal horizon of the sea.”
I would think when he was painting en plein air
quote a Frenchman as he passed by; “with a few more lessons you will be quite good.” This sentiment
for I know few amateur weilders of the brush with a keener sense of light and colour
or surer grasps of essentials.” John and Hazel Lavery were neighbors of the Churchills in London
Winston would often work in Lavery’s studio in London
A photo shows Churchill in front of the archway you can see at the end of the pathway
and often multiple secretaries— always taking writing paraphernalia and of course all things necessary for painting
It would not have been difficult to notice him on these painting occasions— that at times included a “draught excluder” screen
(in one picture at-square sits on the wall)
Painting was what he did in order to carry on
“Locals gather to watch the great statesman painting.” Paul Rafferty
As Coombs says; “characteristically for Churchill
the figures are not too successful.”
“Alligator cigar case that was the responsibility of Sgt Murray
all of his paraphernalia was very important to Sir Wintston: the cigars—ideally Romeo Julietos—and matches
Churchill with Lord Beaverbrook photographed in the garden of La Capponcina
there is a chronology of years with paragraphs labeled
Background and Painting have done that year—much was always going on in his life
yet he was able to focus and create beautiful pictures
I’ve looked at many photos in the Coombs and Rafferty books of his work
Learning about what was going on in the world at the time he was painting
puts in perspective how important it was for Churchill to have a diversion and how important were the friends and family that supported him along the way making villas and houses available to him where there was privacy
I have only touched the surface and have chosen but a few stories that match the areas where he painted
Exploring Churchill as a painter is fascinating
and the history set down by Paul Rafferty and David Coombs with pictures of Churchill’s works makes it that more interesting
Almost every picture has a tidbit of information attached
The interesting title of the top left painting caught my eye
Churchill made repeated visits to towns all along the French Riviera—to those certain places he most enjoyed
It’s interesting to see the visits put to canvas
Churchill painting at La Capponcina in 1955
Notice his guard in the lower right corner–always close by
Churchill at La Capponcina with Maire Gramaglia and family after being made Maire Honoraire de Cap-d’Ail by the Commune of Cap-d’Ail
recognizing his friendship with France during World War Two
“The Churchills lived very happily at Lullenden until financial difficulties forced its sale in 1920.”
Churchill was drawn to painting the always changing calm or a stormy sea
the rocks of the Pointe Bacon and pointu bateau in Cap-d’Antibes
Friends provided villas with wonderful views where he was welcome to stay and once painted while standing under a wisteria-covered pergola
What a guest he must have been—imagine the conversations that ensued
Protected by a “draught excluder screen”
The importance of Churchill’s discovery of painting cannot be underestimated and how it saved him
This quote from his writings in Coombs’ book
He wore this hat while painting from 1930.” Paul Rafferty
“I do not know how I should have got through those horrible months form May till November
had it not been for this great new interest which sprang up in my mind and kept my fingers busy and my eye alert.”

To meet this need, BRGM developed the storm network as part of two programmes that supplement the work of the Aquitaine Coastal Observatory (2015-2017 and then 2017-2018). Structured around a network of voluntary participants and an automatic monitoring system for marine weather events (Erosion Monitoring system), its main functions are as follows:
BRGM has played a very positive role in developing the storm network of the Aquitaine Coastal Observatory. Both the technical committee and the users' committee had expressed a need. Consequently, the collecting and managing the data available via a website and a mobile application meets all the concerns of coastal managers. Working closely with local actors, BRGM has clearly produced a useful and relevant technical solution.
The Erosion Monitoring system has been deployed for all members of the storm network since November 2018, together with tools for feeding back field information (a forum and a mobile application). The storm network is thus gradually being integrated at the local (SLGBC), regional (Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region) and national levels. The Erosion Monitoring system is currently the leading forecasting system dealing with erosion on a regional scale in France.
