Previously dedicated to the automotive industry
Bosch’s Mondeville factory has recently reinvented itself through a technological transformation into a model of the factory of the future
Digital tools and connected systems are essential components of the factory of the future
the manufacturing industry is reinventing itself
But creating a factory of the future requires more than just evolving to stay competitive; it means working with today’s challenges (like high energy and labor costs) with an eye on progress and persistence. Here are four ways Bosch Mondeville has transformed its factory model today—for tomorrow
“We’ve gradually moved from mass production to industrializing innovative products,” says Théophile Guettier
project manager for 3D design at Bosch Mondeville
To shift from its original setup for manufacturing automotive electronics
the site has gone through a digital transformation
adding skills to support companies seeking to industrialize small- and medium-scale production runs in record time
“Integrating certain software programs into our production has changed everything,” says Pierre Bagnon
director of electronic manufacturing service (EMS)
“These programs have enabled us to reproduce our operators’ know-how while allowing all of us to enhance our own skills.”
Bosch Mondeville has extended its expertise in automobile electronics to certain niche markets—such as manufacturing active antenna arrays for Sigfox, a communication specialist for IoT, and top-of-the-line hi-fi speakers by Devialet
Adopting a “manufacturing as a service” model
the Mondeville factory focuses on adding strength and sustainability to Devialet’s production system
which requires precision manufacturing with high-performance materials
represents a turning point for the Mondeville site (winner of the Factory of the Year 2017 award from L’Usine N ouvelle
a weekly French business and technology magazine)
once used mostly for research purposes at Bosch
has spread to workshops where dozens of employees manufacture products in small production runs
but manual labor is back thanks to digital technology,” Bagnon says
Although assembly line automation has reduced the number of operators per position
digital technology has brought back the human element to the production lines
the product lands in the operator’s hands after it has been identified through its RFID chip
Light guides then help the operator place the pieces correctly and in the right order; this allows for a manual assembly that limits the risk of error to the lowest level possible
“In addition to the operator’s attention to detail
production is controlled electronically,” Bagnon says
“Sensors on the assembly bench communicate with the system via ultrasound
a part is installed in the incorrect order
an error message appears on the screen alerting the operator.”
more than 600 employees are working in this new digital environment
“Our activities continue to grow steadily,” Bagnon says
“Dozens of our clients are able to extend the range of their products
maintaining high-quality production in small runs.”
“Manufacturing in short runs with a high level of innovation gives us an opportunity to expand our service offer,” Bagnon says of the Mondeville plant, noting that software tools such as Autodesk Fusion 360 and Meshmixer have played a major role
they allowed us to industrialize a production run adapted from the previous one with greater ease and at a higher rate.”
The engineering and product-development teams at Bosch have worked with the line operators to improve production by setting up predictive maintenance and other smart tools supporting the workers, such as Bosch APAS collaborative robots
“We needed to respond quickly to new customers who had never really worked with Bosch before,” Bagnon says
“With the support of each of the factory services involved
we have built our new studio around this relationship.”
Bosch hired new engineers and sales reps in order to match client requirements with the Bosch organization
the teams at Bosch Mondeville have focused on these new customer relationships in the drafting and design phases
The Bosch teams exchange information with clients on the different limitations in production
creating conditions for increased productivity
Bosch Mondeville can produce either big volumes or small serials with high customization
Integrating a digital workshop unit, similar to a “fab lab,” into factory production has given Bosch the flexibility to work with a range of clients
It operates much like a startup that encompasses both Bosch employees and external clients such as Safran
This approach allows Bosch Mondeville to not only develop new products based on its existing catalog but also respond more quickly to urgent requests to produce new parts that are increasingly technical and innovative
Bosch’s 3D-printing capability has attracted a project to create customized splints for the medical industry
we needed software that allows us to work like sculptors
and Meshmixer offers the ability to use organic shapes,” Bagnon says
this solution allows us to design a system that is perfectly adapted to the patient’s body.”
Devialet is a sound-technology startup founded in 2007 and based in Paris. The company’s original technology, Analog Digital Hybrid (ADH)
is a patented amplification invention that helped bridge the gap between analog and digital technology
In 2010, Devialet introduced a line of hi-fi amplifiers, and in early 2015, after successfully downsizing its technology, it introduced Phantom
designed for an ultradense physical sound impact
Striving to make its products more accessible
Devialet has developed and industrialized Phantom
which has been available in Apple stores since December 2015
to meet the challenge of large-scale production
Devialet partnered with Bosch Mondeville to produce Phantom

Cuban triple jumper Leyanis Pérez had a dream day at the Mondeville Athletic Meeting (France)
improving twice the world record of the year
the record of the event and her personal best indoors
Aged 22 and bronze medalist at the Budapest-2023 World Championships
Leyanis showed impressive stability on Wednesday and improved the aforementioned records twice
with 14.85m on his first attempt and 14.86 on his fifth
He is walking very well emotionally and physically and today he told me that he felt good and we were able to rest and train well before competing,” his trainer
He stressed that they have made “some adjustments” and his pupil has improved speed and strength parameters
but at the beginning it is difficult to coordinate
Technically we have to keep improving the fall
but we are doing well and we hope to celebrate the 15 at the Olympic Games,” he added
With both marks she surpassed the mark of the year (14.60)
as well as the 14.48 that she herself had set last year as the French record
she also improved the 14.65 that she had set as her personal best indoors since last year in Lievin (France)
ARGAN and CARREFOUR bring a former industrial brownfield back to life in Caen with the biggest Aut0nom®logistics site in France
the CARREFOUR SUPPLY CHAIN teams just took possession of their new Aut0nom® logistics platform in a size of 82,000 sq.m
which was together led by ARGAN and CARREFOUR through their CARGAN-LOG joint-venture
was developed on a former STELLANTIS industrial brownfield that was beforehand depolluted
This project embodies an exemplary energy and ecological ambition
notably including the planting of over 11,000 trees
An ideal location to serve all the Normandie region
that the CARREFOUR teams took possession of the 82,000 sq.m logistics site labelled Aut0nom®
the activities previously operated in Carpiquet and thus helps CARREFOUR increase its logistics footprint in the region
This platform is a bi-temperature one with a quarter of the building equipped with a fully mechanized refrigerated area (2°C/4°C)
and the remaining area dedicated to storing products at ambient temperature
A block of 2,500 sq.m with offices and corporate rooms completes the building
Provision for expansion has been maintained to support the long-term growth of CARREFOUR's activities
With the interchange connecting the Caen ring road to the A13
Mondeville enjoys a strategic location for logistics activities
The biggest Aut0nom® in France in the middle of a forest with over 11,000 trees
A photovoltaic power station with impressive dimension was installed on the roof
It generates 1,850 MWh/year and is dedicated to CARREFOUR’s self-consumption
it will help cover most of the needs in the warehouse related to heating
This power station is completed by batteries for storage and electric heat pumps that are far less energy intensive than traditional gas boilers
Beyond the focus on the building's energy performance
the land aspect of the project is also exemplary
The rehabilitation of a former 30-hectare STELLANTIS industrial brownfield
has significantly limited soil artificialization and reduced the overall ecological impact of the operation
this project is noteworthy for its environmental focus and commitment to biodiversity protection
featuring an extensive reforestation and landscaping plan for the site
and 11,000 new ones—of native species—were planted following the Miyawaki forest method
41% of the land area is dedicated to green spaces
The combined action of Aut0nom® and the 11,000 trees will ultimately limit the project's carbon emissions to 1 kg of CO₂/sq.m/year
This is an extremely low level compared to traditional warehouses heated with gas and lacking photovoltaic systems
all these factors led to a BREEAM Very Good certification
Chairman of ARGAN’s Executive Board: “Carried out jointly with our main client
this new project marks a major milestone in ARGAN's development
becomes the largest Aut0nom® in France and a new demonstration for ARGAN's expertise and commitment to excellence
Only two years after the delivery of the first Aut0nom® in Serris
this label has been successfully implemented nationwide
which places environmental considerations at the heart of real estate and economic development”

Philippines – When given the opportunity and playing time
This she has shown time and again throughout her career in the collegiate ranks in the Philippines and Chinese-Taipei
and even in a top-notch professional league in Europe
After being sidelined for a year due to a knee injury, the 6-foot-3 Gilas women’s star center moved to France in late January after initially getting signed by Toulouse Metropole Basket which currently sits at last place in the standings of the Ligue Féminine de Basketball, the French premier women’s division.
After three uneventful games with Toulouse Metropole, all of which resulted in losses, where she averaged 3.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in just 12.6 minutes of play, Animam transferred to USO Mondeville Basket in the Ligue Feminine 2 de Basketball.
Animam will look to provide the lift that Mondeville needs to keep its slim playoff hopes alive or at the very least, maintain its spot in the French league Division 2.
Last Saturday, Animam showed her new team a glimpse of what she brings to the table. In her first game with Mondeville, the former NU Lady Bullldog produced 6 points and 4 rebounds in 19 minutes of action off the bench to help her squad pull off a 60-59 upset win over La Tronche Meylan Basket at the Charlaix Maupertuis Gymnasium in La Tronche-Meylan.
Mondeville improved to a 7-10 slate as they notched their fourth win in the last six games. Although Mondeville currently sits in 10th place out of 12 teams, the team is just two games behind La Tronche which dropped to a triple tie for fourth place in the standings with a 9-8 record.
Animam will be looked upon to play a bigger role as the road ahead gets tougher for Mondeville entering the last five games of the season.
She will be sharing frontline duties with 6-foot naturalized Morrocan Sarah Ousfar who starts at center for Mondeville and averages 10.8 points and 8.5 boards.
A pair of youngsters, Louise Bussiere and Vaciana Gomis who are both former members of the French under-20 national team, are also averaging in double figures for Mondeville.
Bussiere is a 5-foot-11 power forward contributing 10.4 points and 5.1 rebounds, while Gomis, a 5-foot-8 shooting guard, is the team’s leading scorer with her average of 11.9 points per game.
Mondeville will travel on March 11 to face Montbrison which is tied with La Tronche for fourth place in the standings, before Animam and her squad host third-ranked Feytiat on March 18. – Rappler.com

Cockpit is effectively non-structural and made from a hybrid biaxial fabric
Transport/Aerospace
epoxy resins and adhesives from Sicomin have been used by Grand Largue Composites (GLC)
to construct the first Class40 racing yacht to feature a significant quantity of flax-fibre reinforcements
The Crosscall yacht won the Class40 World Championships in June 2022 and is a prototype of the new Lift V2 design by Marc Lombard
one of the leading naval architects in this field
Class40 is one of the most competitive fleets in yacht racing
The hulls of Class40 yachts must be light in weight
and durable in the most extreme conditions
they cannot be reinforced with carbon fibres
The quality and reliability of the resins used for the infusion and lamination of the hulls are therefore of paramount importance
was keen to use as much flax as possible in the construction of the yacht
but Lombard – who had to certify and warranty the structure of the boat in ocean racing use – was more cautious
Crosscall’s cockpit was designed to be effectively non-structural
This allowed the cockpit to be made from a hybrid biaxial fabric comprising 50% flax fibres
Other parts of the boat that incorporate flax fibre include the tunnel
The rest of the boat is reinforced with 100% glass-fibre fabrics
The hull was moulded and infused in one piece and the deck – including the hybrid flax-fibre cockpit – was also infused as a single part
The internal structure was then laminated into the hull by hand before the hull and deck were finally bonded together
The infusion resin selected was Sicomin’s SR 1710
Designed specifically for use in infusion and injection processes
it has exceptionally low viscosity and its low-reactivity hardener makes it suitable for the production of large parts
Composite components made from SR 1710 possess high interlaminar shear-strength and the resin retains its mechanical properties in wet environments
Sicomin’s low-toxicity SR 8200 was used to laminate the internal structures onto the skin of the hull
this system includes a choice of hardeners with a wide range of reactivities
which makes it equally suitable for making large or small parts
The hull and deck were joined together with Sicomin’s Isobond SR 7100
which demonstrates extremely high fatigue strength and is very resistant to microcracking
An epoxy bonding primer called Undercoat EP 215 HB+ and supplied by Sicomin’s sister company
Map Yachting was first applied to the moulds to make demoulding easier
It also serves as an undercoat in the polyurethane exterior paint system that is used instead of gelcoat to protect the epoxy hull from UV damage
GLC has started building a second Lift V2 Class40 and a third one is now planned
Sicomin will supply the materials for both
“We have been using Sicomin’s products since the beginning
we have never had a problem and I would not want to risk trying a different supplier,” said GLC managing director Xavier Gosselin

After winning at two indoor meetings during a brief sojourn in Europe last week
Chinese long jumper Li Jinzhe returned to Beijing on Monday (9)
Before continuing his preparations for the 2015 IAAF World Championships this summer
in the wake of him flying out to an Asian-leading indoor mark of 8.10m in the French town of Mondeville on Saturday
the 25-year-old Beijing native will first enjoy some days off to celebrate the Spring Festival
a traditional Chinese holiday that gives people the opportunity to review the past year and make resolutions for the new one
the usually gregarious Li – known for his spiky hair and sporting gloves or arm accessories while competing – admits he is filled with mixed feelings
He leapt 8.47m last June to finally make the national record his own
an effort that was only one centimetre shy of the Asian record set by Saudi Arabia’s Mohamed Salman Al Khuwalidi in 2006
He was close to winning the gold medal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot
last March before Brazil’s Mauro Da Silva turned the tables in the last round
But a silver was also the best result ever achieved by a Chinese long jumper on the international stage
Although missing the gold medal in Sopot was a disappointment for Li
his biggest regret of 2014 was failing to win the Diamond Race
After winning at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Monaco and finishing third in Birmingham and Lausanne
Li stood a strong chance to win the Diamond Race at the IAAF Diamond League final in Brussels but he had four fouls and only finished fifth with a relatively modest 8.01m
“I really wanted to be the first Asian athlete to win the Diamond Race but
I thought too much about it during the competition
Li realised that he also missed a chance of probably allowing one more Chinese long jumper perform in front of his friends and family on home soil at the IAAF World Championships as 2014 Diamond Race winners can get a wild card to compete in Beijing
Li could have earned one extra ticket for his country since four other Chinese athletes jumped the 8.10m IAAF World Championships entry standard
“I jumped over eight metres more than 30 times in 2014
so qualifying for the World Championships is not a problem for me,” Li said
“But this time I will not think too much about the result when I am in Beijng for the Worlds
I will just take the competition as it comes and just try my best.”
who is reluctant to talk about his expectations in Beijing
his coach Randy Huntington is blunt about his ambition
“The expectation is that he wins in Beijing
That's what we are aiming for,” said the US coach who used to guide the world record-holder Mike Powell
“But expectation is one thing and reality is another
A lot of things can get in the way of that
We are trying to eliminate all of those things
Everything we are doing is pointing towards him being top of the podium
Invited by the Chinese Athletics Association
Huntington started to work as the coach of the national team in November 2013
Although he has had to sometimes cope with the cultural differences in training
he has been working hard to help Li to release his full potential
“It is not an easy thing when you think you are pretty good already and someone tells you
you have some flaws we need to take care of if you want to be No.1 of the world',” said Huntington
with the World Championships now looming on the horizon
“He just needs to improve his last three steps
There are some technique issues which caused him a lot of fouls in 2014,” added Huntington
He has got the speed and elastic strength to jump 8.70m
Mike Powell had it (question marks) until the day he did it.”
It will be the third time for Li to compete at the World Championships and
his previous two experiences were not too successful
Li was 13th in qualifying with 8.01m and failed to make it to the final in Berlin
he made the final but only finished 12th at 7.86m following an accidental toe injury right before the competition
“I was doing physical exercise but carelessly dropped the bar of the dumbbell on my right foot
I think it was a mistake that even a kindergarten kid would not make,” said Li
who is still mildly embarrassed when talking about the accident
“This year the World Championship is the most important thing for me
And I will make sure I am 100 percent ready for the competition
This time I will leave no regrets behind.”
in may 2013, dutch studio MVRDV won a competition to transform a port-side area of caen presqu’île in normandy
with the project now in development for two years
‘la grande mosaïque’ masterplan has already seen a series of projects under construction
the 600 hectare project tackles the problems caused by the area’s rapid de-industrialization
integrating the historic aspects of the site with the natural environment
an exhibition of MVRDV’s works — alongside the masterplan itself — is open to the public in ‘le pavillon’
mondeville coeur calix – aerial view
the scheme seeks to revitalize the polluted
formerly industrial area by uniting the city and its neighboring towns — hérouville saint-clair and mondeville
the precise methodology that was applied to the project led to the development of a specific spatial planning tool
this idea creates a secondary street network and shared public space around buildings to mediate between the existing and new parts of the scheme
the offset takes the form of an urban version of the ‘bocage’
and gives back to the area the natural heritage that was taken from it during the industrial era

‘through intensely layering the masterplanning rules along with various scenarios and site-specific situations the final result is a highly effective
historical elements and natural environment,’ explains MVRDV
‘the design balances the need for specificity and flexibility which will allow caen and its neighboring towns to be able to cope with future development in a way that will restore the identity of the area rather than detract from it.’

France – Not far from the major port city of Caen in the Normandy region of north-west France
including the municipally owned La Renaissance theatre
now the proud owner of a new d&b audiotechnik sound system solution
While d&b systems can be found among the world’s most prestigious venues
it is the teams behind lesser known local applications that are making quality listening truly accessible to all
To that end regional projects like La Renaissance receive every bit as much attention
time and effort as the globally renowned stadiums and concert halls
Laurent Coulombier is the theatre’s technical manager
“We needed to replace our old sound system that was completely obsolete
and it ultimately came down to three brands
such as the flown sub array and ArrayProcessing
Given the constraints of the space we needed to cover
this gave us much more flexibility to develop the right system and save money in operational costs.”
One such restriction was due to the theatre’s expandable stage
Extending from the front made it impossible to incorporate ground stacked elements
“unless you’re prepared to go through the hassle and expense of moving and re-cabling six subs every time you have a configuration change,” says Coulombier
the team chose to fly the subs in a horizontal array from a dedicated proscenium truss
thereby avoiding any unpleasant resonance on stage
The sub array format combined with the use of delays on the various sound sources resulted in accurate horizontal directivity control for smooth
For the performers and audience this also has the benefit of maintaining a clean
it was also crucial that the PA system could provide full
consistent coverage in all three configurations without having to change the angles of each cluster
L/R hangs comprising six d&b T10 compact line array elements were specified per side utilising the optional ArrayProcessing function to realise the flexibility needed at the touch of a button
“I also appreciate the amps,” continues Coulombier
referring to the installation targeted 30D and 10D used on the project
“With integrated processing that work with any d&b loudspeaker they allow us to optimise our loudspeaker combinations
stay within budget and still deliver superb results
The system is fully networked for straightforward system management
and I also felt that the ArrayCalc simulation software and associated R1 remote control software offered more personalisation than was possible from other manufacturers
we have a high quality system from a top name brand that performs impeccably.”
Throughout the project d&b worked closely with the contractors
who handled the installation and local client relations
Triptyk is a multi-faceted event production company and systems integrator already very familiar with both the venue and with Laurent Coulombier
“It was a fascinating learning curve for us as this was actually our first installation with d&b,” explains Olivier Mette
“We worked intensively with d&b for nearly six months in order to deliver the project
It was the first time we got to work with their innovative ArrayProcessing technology
a highly efficient processing technique that has been particularly compelling for Laurent at La Renaissance who works with three different room/stage configurations
“The training provided by d&b enabled us to reinforce our knowledge of ArrayCalc and the R1 remote software and we also got to know the d&b team very well throughout the project
all of them have been a pleasure to work with: friendly

Tony Parker, who was putting European basketball on the map in San Antonio at the time, was a god to Marine. And so, she would urge Lionel to take her to Parker’s games where he played for the French National team. Her passion for Parker made Lionel and Geraldine collect Parker’s singing record along with piles of magazines and DVDs for Johannes, which they still have. Living and breathing basketball from a young age, Marine’s rise was fast and inevitable.
Marine Johannes is a French national who was born in Bonnebosq, a town of less than 750 people in France’s northern Lisieux. She still visits the place, which might be one of the only places where she isn’t crowded for pictures. Spending time at her home is how Marine recharges her creativity, bonding with family, at the beach, or just in the garden.
As the French hosted the Olympics in Paris last year, Marine took a sabbatical from the WNBA to prepare for the games. Her team narrowly missed out on gold as the United States beat them by 1 point in the final.
What’s your perspective on:From Bonnebosq to the big leagues—Is Marine Johannes the pride of French basketball?
While Marine did not compete in the WNBA last year, she did play in the EuroLeague Women, where she competed for the Turkish club Çimsa ÇBK Mersin, participating in both domestic Turkish league games (KBSL) and EuroLeague play.
