And now there is a demand to naturalize them and give them full citizenship
three friends originally from the Russian Republic of Chechnya
were at a park in the French area of Montereau-Fault-Yonne when they spotted smoke two blocks away
They ran over to find a crowd yelling up to an elder man who took refuge on his patio whilst the smoke from a fire that entered his apartment from the hallway was so thick
Dombaev scaled the building’s facade with Ouloubaev and Ahmedov close behind
saw the fire was close to the patio itself
then working as a team they lifted the man up and carried him from his patio to the adjacent patio
all the while comforting the scared man whilst the crowd below cheered
There was no time to wait for the firefighters
Others from the crowd had likewise climbed up to assist
And
Reporters asked him if he was afraid
"I was doing gymnastics with my wife and my friend in Square Beaumarchais when I saw smoke coming from a neighboring building," recalled Dombaev
Tragically, the building fire took the life of a mother and her 3 year old daughter
Now the general public has called on the powers that be to naturalize these two men and make them full citizens
They have lived in France for seven and nine years
A petition www.change.org/… was started by the Monterelaise population to President Emmanuel Macron and to the Minister of the Interior Christophe Castaner
A fire hit one of the Montereau neighborhoods on April 15
an old man was trapped on his balcony in the building fire
Dombaev Dzhambulat and his friends Ouloubaev Aslan and Ahmedov Muhsinjon risking their own lives
climbed the facade of the building up to the 3rd floor in order to rescue this frightened old man who had taken refuge in his balcony
Dombaev Dzhambulat with the help of his friends went to look for the old man on his balcony
passed him over the void and then put him safely on the neighboring balcony
opened the doors and used fire extinguishers which he had recovered when he saw the fire in the distance
This gesture facilitated access to the building for the firefighters
Faced with these acts of bravery which aroused applause and great relief from the population
President and Minister of the Interior to be able to give them another life
We demand the regularization of the situation of these heroes of society
These "lambdas" citizens did not hesitate for a second to put their courage at the service of others
but I and the people of Monterrey wish to say THANK YOU
When told of the petition, Dombaev replied
“I've been dreaming about this for 7 years

Headteacher says garment is 'ostentatious religious symbol'
I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice
A teenage Catholic girl who converted to Islam has been banned from attending a school in the eastern Paris suburbs because her skirt is too long.
The headteacher of the school in Montereau-Fault-Yonne told the 16-year-old that the length of her skirt meant that it was an “ostentatious religious symbol” – something forbidden in state schools in France since 2004.
A meeting will be held at the school with the pupil’s parents to try to resolve the dispute, following a rash of similar incidents in other French schools last year.
Long skirts if worn as a fashion statement are allowed in French schools. Long skirts worn as sign of allegiance to Islam – or any other religion – may fall foul of the 2004 law which enforces the principle that state schools are secular.
The council of state, the final arbiter of the meaning of French laws, has been asked to rule on the “long skirt” issue but has not yet done so.
The girl has been named only as K De Sousa, French of Portuguese origin. She converted to Islam, with the blessing of her family, a year ago. The French education system investigated whether she was part of a radical Islamic movement and decided she was not.
Her mother Marie-Christine de Sousa told French magazine L’Obs: “My daughter respects the law. I respect her religion. Until now, the school has made no comment on the way she dresses.
“Apart from chattering in class, she has no problems and doesn’t say much about her conversion. People shouldn’t jump to conclusions.”
K De Sousa wears a headscarf in public but takes it off when she reaches school, as the 2004 law demands. The law was enacted after a series of rows in French schools about the wearing of headscarves. It was broadened to ban all “ostentatious religious symbols” to avoid seeming to stigmatise Islam.
A handful of schools in France have begun to interpret long skirts won by Muslim girls as a religious symbol. Most do not.
The education board covering K De Sousa’s school admitted that dialogue between the school and her family had “not gone entirely serenely”.
“Talks will resume on Monday,” a spokesman said.
“It is in everyone’s interest that this young woman should pursue her schooling normally. A long dress or skirt is not, in itself, a motive for excluding a pupil.”

A former French minister is planning a historical theme park dedicated to Napoleon
complete with battle re-enactments and guillotines
From our morning news briefing to a weekly Good News Newsletter

There will be daily stagings of Napoleon's infamous 1815 defeat at Waterloo
as well as an extravagant water show depicting the British Royal Navy's decisive victory over Napoleon in the Battle of Trafalgar
Napoleonland will also re-create the death
But "the greatest attraction will be the ski run," says Khateni
which will allow visitors to ski through a battlefield strewn with "frozen bodies of soldiers and horses."
Jégo is currently seeking private investors to help pony up the roughly $280 million needed to begin building the park in 2014
creating 3,000 jobs and bolstering French tourism in the process
Napoleonland just might succeed if it follows in the footsteps of the "endlessly popular" Disneyland Paris
"The French couldn't be more aware that spoon-fed entertainment is a winning formula." And even though everyone is cutting down on luxuries during these tough economic times
"there is still an argument for the creation of a park like Napoleonland."

PARIS — Lance Armstrong’s kids were dressed in yellow
When the seven-time Tour de France champion returned to the Tour podium Sunday
And so was rival and teammate Alberto Contador — wearing the coveted and hard-won yellow jersey
Armstrong capped his return with an impressive third-place finish
They were among the massive crowd that poured out onto Paris’ most famous avenue for the finish — Norwegians in Viking helmets
flag-waving Britons and an American in a stars-and-stripes top hat among them
Contador cruised down the Champs-Elysees to win the Tour for a second time Sunday after 2,141 miles over three weeks of racing
excelled in the two time-trials — winning a pivotal race against the clock in the 18th stage — and won the first Alpine stage
Contador’s toughest rival in the mountains
“It has been an especially difficult Tour for me
but I savor it and it is more special because of it,” he said after the prize ceremony
The body language on the winner’s podium said it all
As the 37-year-old Armstrong climbed onto the stage
he gave a perfunctory handshake to his teammate Contador
then heartily grabbed Schleck’s hand with both hands
Armstrong cast a long sideways glance at what had long been his spoils; he gave only a cursory glance to his own crystal trophy
Asked on French TV what the hardest moment in this race
Contador replied: “It was in the (team) hotel,” without elaborating
Contador already is one of cycling’s greats
having won all three Grand Tours of France
Armstrong’s comeback after 3 ½ years of retirement raised questions about who would lead Astana during cycling’s most prestigious race
Those questions remained through much of the Tour as tensions mounted over who was the No
Armstrong and Contador shared glasses of champagne on the ride into Paris
But it seemed to be more about keeping up appearances than a genuine celebration: After a few sips
I did everything I could,” Armstrong said before the final stage
it’s probably a healthy thing for them to see
because they saw their dad that never lost
and the kids in their class (say) ‘your dad never loses,’ so it’s good for them to see dad get third and still be cool with that and still be happy.”
was talking less of squabbling within Astana and more about Contador’s greatness as a rider
Contador has rebounded from a brush with death
Contador fell in the first stage of the 2004 Vuelta a Asturias race
went to hospital and learned he had a congenital cerebral vascular disorder
he won the fifth stage of the 2005 Tour Down Under
Today the only reminder of that scare is a large scar running down the side of his head
the Tour has been won by a Spaniard for four straight years — Oscar Pereiro in 2006
Contador said he was more at ease in this year’s Tour than in 2007
then race leader Michael Rasmussen of Denmark was sent home for lying about his whereabouts during pre-Tour doping controls
the Tour got through three weeks with no positive doping cases
But the leader of France’s anti-doping agency says not all results are in
and more tests still could be carried out in the weeks
who had to sit out last year because Astana was banned because of previous doping scandals
diagonally across central and northeastern France to the Alps
and then down to Saturday’s race climax on the dreaded Mont Ventoux in southeast France before the Paris finish
After three straight Tours decided by less than a minute between first and second place
Contador’s margin of victory was the largest since Armstrong collected his last title in 2005
And Armstrong was the second-oldest rider to reach the Tour podium
Raymond Poulidor of France was 40 he placed third in 1976
The 24-year-old Schleck won the white jersey awarded to the Tour’s best young rider
Franco Pellizotti of Italy picked up the polka-dot jersey given to the race’s King of the Mountains
And Thor Hushovd of Norway beat the 24-year-old Briton rider Mark Cavendish for the green jersey given to the Tour’s best Tour sprinter
Cavendish collected his sixth stage win of this year’s Tour in a sprint after the 101.9-mile course ride from Montereau-Fault-Yonne to the Champs-Elysees to become the first rider to win six Tour stages in a sprint
winning by several bike lengths in the last mad dash
trailed in second by his own lead-out man on the Columbia team
Tyler Farrar of the United States was third
winning on the Champs-Elysees is a dream for every single sprinter — to see the Arc de Triomphe in the distance,” Cavendish said
“I can’t go home from this Tour being disappointed.”
who’s already trying to figure out how to win a third Tour
He’ll lead a new squad sponsored by RadioShack
Astana likely will welcome back Alexandre Vinokourov
Whether Astana will still have room for Contador
and whether the Spaniard will want to team with Vinokourov
What’s very clear is Armstrong and Contador already are relishing the chance to face off again next year
freed of the need to paper over the obvious cracks in their relationship
“We are totally incompatible,” Contador said

We often come across stories of everyday heroes--a state trooper giving his protective mask to a doctor
a woman getting a third job at a nursing home to stay close to her mother etc
And while these stories are absolutely heartwarming--don't get us wrong!--there are some tales of everyday heroism that are nothing short of mindblowing
This is the story of two friends who would give any Marvel superhero a run for their money--and this without any superpower
Back in April 2020, a fire of a voluntary nature started in a seven-story building located in Montereau-Fault-Yonne
The incident unfortunately caused the death of a mother and her three-year old daughter
The survivors were put through quite an ordeal
two brace superheroes were there to the rescue
Dombaev Dzhambulat and Ouloubaev Aslan are two Chechen friends who have been living in France for seven and nine years respectively
When Dombaev saw the smoke from a distance
"I was doing gymnastics in Square Beaumarchais when I saw smoke coming from a neighboring building," Dombaev told Tellerreport with the help of his wife
he saw the carnage and heard the screams of the residents
He saw the poor old man who was trapped on his balcony
having difficulty breathing with all the smoke
I can't walk," the old man told Dombaev
"I then piled up trash cans and went up to him," continues Dombaev Dzhambulat
Since the poor old man was too afraid to walk
He then proceeded to extract him from the smoky balcony
taking him in his arms so he could be safe in the other adjacent balcony
"I saw an old person in the wrong and I did not hesitate to climb. I was not afraid because it is not the first time that I have rescued people, " Ouloubaev Aslan said through his son
While Dombaev doesn't consider his incredible actions to be heroic--for him
it was the normal thing to do--the residents warmly applauded the two men for their bravery
The one thing Dombaev hopes for is to obtain his residency in France
where he has been working as a mechanic for years
“I've been dreaming about this for 7 years
not all of us are capable of climbing a building on fire and carrying a victim in our arms across a balcony
But there are other ways in which we can save each other

Racism is considered the marginalization and/or oppression of people of color based on a socially constructed racial hierarchy that privileges another race
The term is applied in many areas of a society that perpetuates discrimination on the basis of race or strengthen racial inequalities in education
the concept of biological race is considered a cultural invention that has no scientific basis
The progress over the past half-century has been impressive
but the nation still has a long way to go to reach true racial equality
The following racism quotes contain inspiring perspectives to help you reflect and do whatever you can to make the world a better place for you and generations yet to come
Showing that you care about other people’s well-being
that you are an ally in promoting inclusion and equity
are some great actions you can take to help overcome the consequences of racism
Just because racism doesn’t happen among the people you know
Passive racism is probably the most insidious
factor that contributes to the ongoing problem
