As soon as you enter the auditorium for Moulin Rouge
you get the strong sense that resistance is going to be futile
they go all-out for visual splendour that’s designed to smack you between the eyes
around which prowl aloof gentlemen in top hats and contemptuous female dancers whose dresses billow around the stage
the eponymous windmill slowly rotates in one balcony box
while a life-size model elephant looks down from the other
Derek McLane’s sets and Catherine Zuber’s costumes bring the world of fin-de-siècle Paris to life in vibrant
and it provides the most lavish imaginable frame for the simple story of Christian
the bohemian artist who falls for the consumptive night club singer Satine
She’s the main attraction at the Moulin Rouge
but the club is on its last financial legs and she’s forced to enter a transactional relationship with the nasty Duke of Monroth to keep it alive
If you thought Baz Luhrmann’s film was flashy
then this stage adaptation gives it a real run for its money in the bling stakes
those eye-popping visuals are both the show’s greatest strength and its weakness
because you quickly get the sense that this drama might be all surface and no substance
The songs are the most obvious example of that
It’s mostly a jukebox musical that plunders well-known songs to provide the musical framework
it’s mostly fragments of songs melded together to produce quirky medleys
That means that the audience’s focus is drawn to the songs themselves rather than how they support the story
and that distracts from what’s meant to be an all-consuming story of love and passion
looks stunning as she sparkles on a trapeze
but choosing “Diamonds are Forever” as her first number rather kills the seductive mood
the other dramatic problems become more obvious
The characters are drawn in colours that are as blinding as the show’s costumes
which means that there’s barely any subtlety and the interactions are so blunt that they’re almost comical at times
You know from an early stage that Satine isn’t going to survive until the final curtain
And the onward sweep of desperate passion stalls several times: lots of sequences provide an excuse for a number but don’t further the story a jot
such as the tedious sequence in act one where the bohemians explain their show to the Duke
or the elongated absinthe-induced vision in act two
I couldn’t shake the view that it’s all unnecessarily drawn out
and that the show could lose half an hour from its running time and gain from the excision
Put it all together and you have the shiniest piece of superficiality you could imagine
and if you’re happy to immerse yourself in it

Taye Diggs and Wayne Brady will return to Broadway in Moulin Rouge! as the Duke of Monroth and Harold Zidler
beginning July 22 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre
with Diggs performing through September 28 and Brady through November 9
A Tony Award winner for Best Musical, Moulin Rouge! is a stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s popular film
mashing up more than 160 years of music
and it provided the warmth and excitement I needed to get through the blistery and violently cold weather we’ve been having here in Indianapolis
The first North American Tour of “Moulin Rouge
The Musical” is currently onstage at the Murat Theatre at Old National Center Jan
The Musical” debuted on Broadway in 2019 won 10 Tony Awards in 2021
The musical follows Christian (Christian Douglas)
an American songwriter who travels to Paris to find himself
he finds Toulouse-Lautrec (Nick Rashad Burroughs) and Santiago (Danny Burgos)
who lead him to the illustrious Moulin Rouge club where he meets and falls for Satine (Arianna Rosario)
as they race to save the club with the production of a new show
but this was the first time I’ve ever seen any iteration of “Moulin Rouge!” I’ve never seen the movie
listened to the soundtrack or seen the musical before last night
I did read the Wikipedia summary a few days before the show
brought a friend (who has seen it) and hoped for the best
The Musical” essentially blind is hilarious
Walking into a show blind is always a risk
old-fashioned Broadway-style top dance numbers
It’s fantastically humorous and delightful
It uses a blend of iconic songs from the movie and more modern pop songs from the likes of Rihanna
paired with romantic lighting and dazzling backdrops to really bring both the Moulin Rouge club and Paris to life to the most gorgeous
vibrant and unique costumes and hair styles that only got better as the show continued
READ MORE: IF Theatre celebrates 20th anniversary, hosts world premiere of ‘The JonBenét Game’
The cast invites you into the world of the Moulin Rouge with enticing characters and stunning vocals
The plot of the musical is fun; it’s quirky
I was NOT paying attention to the dialogue or plot or whatever else was going on
The Musical” did not come to play … only for the orchestra to top it off by breathing the most electrifying life into this show through theatrical renditions of pop songs
There is love woven into every aspect of this show
and you can feel that from every seat in the room
I won’t spend too long talking about the importance of representation in theater (because I already have) but it is refreshing to see a show of this renown come through with such extraordinary talent spread across diverse faces and bodies
Truly beautiful and thoughtful work was done on the Murat Theatre stage
and I’ll say it again until more people see the vision: theater doesn’t always have to be serious
serious shows have their place in our community
The Musical” is onstage at the Murat Theatre at Old National Centre now through Jan
The show runs approximately two hours and 35 minutes with one 18-minute intermission
The Musical” is not what I would call a family show
Leave kiddos under 12 at home for this one

The Tony-Award winning production Moulin Rouge
based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film Moulin Rouge
brings audiences into the Belle Époque or “Beautiful Era” of France at the turn of the 20th century
Together with fellow bohemians Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Santiago the Argentinian
the trio strike out to the Moulin Rouge looking to get their work on stage
is in dire financial straits forcing management to pursue an investment from the underhanded Duke of Monroth
Paths collide when the Duke expresses romantic interest in Satine
despite the burgeoning relationship between her and Christian
The supporting character of Toulouse-Lautrec lends a legitimacy to the setting and tone of the production
is based on the real life Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
a multi-faceted French artist whose work depicted the full scope of the bohemian lifestyle in 19th century Paris
He’s interested in people living their best lives and finding good mischief,” says Kearse
“The process of inhabiting him starts with understanding the world that has been created by the history of the musical
the pop songs that are in the show and the love story that is in the middle of this bohemian
I’m also trying to find the ways that the real Toulouse lived his life
because the show has shades of reality and fantasy going at the same time.”
who hailed from an aristocratic family yet fell in love with the underground bohemian lifestyle
the majority of songs featured in the show are well-known preexisting songs
the production strikes a balance between older 20th century jazz pieces and showtunes with newer popular music from artists like Lady Gaga and Lorde
“One of my favorite moments is when I get to sing “Royals” by Lorde with Christian and Santiago,” says Kearse
“We’re meeting Christian for the very first time and we start to see what a shining light he is.”

Before Sophie Carmen-Jones takes her final bow as Nine in Moulin Rouge
I caught up with her to reflect on the past few years in the role
She began as the original Nini in the West End company
Our conversation has been condensed and edited for clarity
Theatrely: When you think about closing up your time with Moulin Rouge
I think there might be a lot of tears from me on Sunday
Would love to walk down memory lane for a moment
What would you say has been the biggest difference between performing the show over there vs
So many little things are different between West End and Broadway
like company warm ups…they don’t happen here and I kind of miss that moment to check in with everyone
Another big difference is the interchanging cast here
in London it’s usually the same cast for 1 year but here you could watch every couple months and see a totally different cast each time
When you found out you were going to be joining the Broadway company
Not that I’ve won the lottery…that would be nice too ;)
You have been with the show now for a few years
do you feel you are ready to say goodbye to Nini
Gosh that’s a tough question because I love playing her SO much
But I think as actors we have to stay curious and stretch ourselves in order to continue growing so this felt like the right time to fly the nest
What will you miss most about your time at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre
But we always say in theatre…it’s never goodbye it’s see you later
Do you have one specific memory throughout your time with moulin Rouge
I think the first preview in London was a big one for me
That first time in front of an audience feeling is exhilarating (and petrifying) and we’d been rehearsing and tech-ing for months so we were ready and raring
Also my Broadway debut…that’s a night I’ll never forget
my fiancé and some of my best friends were here supporting and it felt like such a huge achievement :)
Always warm up thoroughly and strength train outside of the show to avoid injury
has taught you that you will bring to your next contract or show
That being committed and consistent pays off and doesn’t go unnoticed
If you could sum up your entire experience in one word

we feel both that we’re being presented gifts of flesh and that we are those gifts; there’s something unsettling about the way the performers stare out toward us
one in which every appetite can be indulged
based on Baz Luhrmann’s overly caffeinated 2001 movie
is onstage through February 2nd as part of Broadway Grand Rapids’s 2024-2025 season
providing plenty of opportunity for audience members to step out of the cold and into the warmth of bohemian passion
Having come to Paris to make his name and find someone to love
he soon finds himself in the company of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (Nick Rashad Burroughs) and Santiago
Toulouse-Lautrec was a famous painter; you’ve seen his work
which uses his name as a gesture toward bohemian artistry in general; the real story lies with Christian
and the woman he falls for: gorgeous Satine (Arianna Rosario)
the belle of the cabaret’s glittering ball
the whore with a heart of gold (forgive the language
but it’s what would have been said at the time)
Then we have the Duke of Monroth (Andrew Brewer)
foil to Christian; along with Harold Zidler (Robert Petkoff)
the impresario trying to keep it all together
The simplicity of the characters can be a real virtue; La Boheme’s Mimi isn’t complex either
and as much of that realness comes from Rosario’s performance as from the book itself
hoping to have her star in a musical production created by the trio
she throws herself at him for pragmatic reasons—money
of course—but finds herself quickly falling for him
But her confusion over his identity can’t last
As is often the case with jukebox musicals
the real draw is in the spectacle and in the music
There’s plenty of great spectacle on offer
the show offers up the interior of the Moulin Rouge
Lighting unobtrusively adds to the atmosphere
Among the most effective images is one of the simplest: Satine high in the air
something as evocative of the circus as of the cabaret scene
sometimes combined into medleys or mashups; sometimes delivered faithfully; sometimes approached in new ways
allowing us to hear it again for something like the first time
Several songs from the movie are here (including Elton John’s simple
wonderful “Your Song” and a medley of numbers with “love” in the chorus)
Highlights: Satine’s performance of Katy Perry’s “Fireworks,” an anthem whose power comes more from its melody than its lyrics; The Police’s “Roxanne” (sadly
hurt Satine feels she does have to put on the red light); Adele’s powerhouse “Rolling In The Deep”
I loved the Latin-tinged update of “Bad Romance,” one of the great pop songs of the 21st century
(It didn’t hurt that it included Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” which remained my ringtone for years)
“Bad Romance” isn’t strictly necessary for the overall story
Almost is good as Satine’s mashup of ““Diamonds Are Forever,” “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” “Material Girl,” and “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” And Sia’s “Chandelier,” here the soundtrack to Christian’s evening with absinthe
a dream of bohemian idealism that never quite made its way to the waking world
If it never quite manages to get under your skin
from its expertly-made world to those moments when you realize you’ve been nodding your head and tapping your chair

but I really love teaching high school and college level math classes. I especially love the remedial math classes
because it's the kids who dislike math that are my favorite to teach. Getting to convert them to the ways of math is a favorite of mine. - What inspired you to become a teacher?Growing up
and it was the teachers who really stepped up and made me who I am today. - What made you want to teach at Central Catholic specifically?I am very excited to work with a diverse community of dedicated students. - What do you hope your impact will be on your students? To show them that math really isn't all THAT bad
just a little intimidating and definitely worth the work!- What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?I currently have been enjoying rock climbing at the gym and hiking in the woods. I also enjoy sewing
though I am not yet good at it. Additionally
I enjoy watching all Jane Austen adaptations
Who and The Witcher. - Feel free to add anything else you’d like to include so we can get to know you better!I love to combine art and math together

PARIS — Advising a headstrong politician like Emmanuel Macron is not an easy job
We'll soon find out if Emmanuel Moulin is up to the task
Moulin, one of France's most influential civil servants, is set to take over as Macron's chief of staff later this month after the departure of Alexis Kohler
who has been with the French president for so long he's known as his "second brain."
Moulin is well-regarded in French political and economic circles
But if his name doesn’t ring a bell to you
Here are four things you need to know about him.
As France faces a worrying deficit and slow growth
Macron has placed at his side someone who knows the country’s financial troubles better than most
Moulin has worked behind the scenes for years in influential roles in the economic milieu
mostly for right-wing heavyweights such as former President Nicolas Sarkozy
He served as a deputy chief of staff to current European Central Bank chief Christine Lagarde when she was France's economy minister
Moulin was later poached by Gabriel Attal to serve as the then-prime minister's top aide
For over three years Moulin also headed one of the most powerful bodies in the French government: the Trésor directorate general at the economy ministry
which takes a leading role in shaping the French position on important economic issues like trade and financial rules
Moulin has thus become a familiar face to policymakers all over the world
he's a regular at G20 meetings or in Brussels when European Union finance ministers meet
is leaving the Elysée Palace for a top job at French bank Société Générale
Macron has had Kohler by his side since his days as economy minister
Kohler was primarily responsible for turning the president's proposals into concrete policies
His only public-facing duty was to read the lists of ministers when a new government is appointed — a scene that became increasingly frequent amid France's recent political instability
Moulin and Kohler studied together at Sciences Po
and he always had a direct line to the Elysée while at the economy ministry
Moulin also assisted Macron during G20 summits as an adviser on economic affairs
It’s no coincidence that when Macron appointed Attal as France’s prime minister in January 2024, the Elysée pushed for Moulin to be appointed as his chief of staff
The goal was to ensure that an experienced hand would be around to help the then-34-year-old head of government
Officials from other EU countries know Moulin as the man who represented France in tense negotiations on various financial texts
including the update of the bloc’s spending rules after the coronavirus pandemic.
Moulin was key in finding a compromise between France and Germany during months-long negotiations
“Moulin acted as a dealmaker,” said an EU diplomat closely involved in those talks
“It was easier to work with him than with Bruno Le Maire
who was seen as the classic French official in the ivory tower.”
People who know Moulin say he knows how to lighten the atmosphere — a skill that could prove particularly valuable as Macron enters the lame-duck phase of his second term
“He is different from most high-ranking officials,” said Dimitri Lucas
a former member of Le Maire’s team who has known Moulin for more than a decade and lauded his creativity
Moulin can be found at a Taylor Swift concert or surrounded by the red velvet of Castel
an iconic restaurant and private members' club in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood of Paris
He also likes to do impressions of French politicians, including former presidents Sarkozy and François Mitterand as well as ex-Prime `Minister Michel Rocard. He was even approached to lend his voice to Sarkozy in a French comedy movie, according to Le Monde
Former colleagues agree he has a great sense of humor and knows how to connect with people
“It's a real strength to be able to juggle between important things — world affairs
French affairs — and at the same time stay close to people
never leaving a text message unanswered,” said Lucas
opening a new front in the transatlantic trade war
The European Commission chief and the French president are trying to woo American researchers with a new program called “Choose Europe for Science.”
German lawmaker Nils Schmid argues there is no need to open the subject as the U.S
has not said it would withdraw its nuclear umbrella
“Before aiming for a free trade deal with the U.S.
our first demand is that they withdraw their tariffs,” says French official
He has been working at the brand since 2016

After studying wine with my wife at the Lycée Agricole de Libourne in Montagne
where our common passion for wine brought us together
we decided to embark on a wine growing adventure in 2006
Franck and Véronique Verral are looking to work with biodiverstiy at Château Moulin de Peyronin
I have always been drawn to the land both through my family’s livestock farm in Landes and been interested in wine thanks to my uncle Pierre Chariol who is winemaker at Chateau de Lescours in Saint Emilion
What is it about being a winemaker you find the most rewarding
the shaping of a vine from its pruning to the harvesting and processing all its fruit
What is the most challenging aspect of being a winemaker
The most stimulating aspect of the job is the constant challenge of adapting to new issues linked to the climate and changing consumer trends
Then there is the extremely heavy workload and the unpredictability of our annual harvest and how much production we can rely on
What is your winemaking philosophy and describe the style of wines you are looking to make
My wife Véronique and I bought Chateau Moulin de Peyronin in 2006
It's a small family estate with 22 hectares of land
We want to keep this model of just 15 hectares and diversify our business by developing the estate's hospitality activities
Château Moulin de Peyronin converted to biodymanic winemaking in 2017
we have been working with organic farming and biodynamic farming since 2017
Our philosophy is to use minimal inputs in our wines
we only use sulphur in our wines and we also have a range of natural wines
The idea is to have pure wines that reflect their terroirs
We were seduced by this vision of biodynamic agriculture
Our goal is to give us all the means to reflect in our wines
the richness of our terroir and the work of man
Biodynamics resonates in our minds as a farm that must be consistent with the environment
biodynamics is synonymous with biodiversity
Has that changed at all over the years and why
we wanted to make wines with a minimum of inputs
After a lot of trial and error we have been able to master our winemaking methods and today we are very happy with the wines we are making. But we're still experimenting. I think we're one of the few estates to produce two Demeter-certified Bordeaux crémants
What impact is climate change having on you and what are you doing to mitigate it
We're finding it increasingly difficult to complete a full harvest
We often get excessive rainfall in the spring
which results in numerous attacks of mildew that we're finding increasingly hard to control
Then there is the almost annual risk of spring frosts
and we now look to prune as late as possible to avoid this
We also have higher and higher degrees of alcohol in our wines with the excessive heat in the summer
Which is why we are looking to expand our range and produce more rosé or crémant rosé
We were able to show our crémants at the Bordeaux Experience event in London in May
What steps are you taking around sustainability and biodiversity
For more than 15 years we have been planting hedges and trees around our plots of vineyard to promote the natural vegetation on our land
We also have over five hectares of land that we have left on the property in order to promote biodiversity and development a wide range of auxiliary flora and fauna
There are big changes happening with winemaking in Bordeaux - what do you see as the most important
Bordeaux winemaking has clearly had its moments of glory over the years
but it is now in danger of having rested on its laurels and has changed little in recent years
is now changing and we are seeing more recent developments in light of our wine crisis
But we know many growers around us who no longer know what to do and are throwing in the towel
What outstanding potential do you think the region still has
We have an exceptional cultural wealth and some very beautiful terroirs in which to make great wines
so it's up to us to review our image and what we stand for to make consumers want to believe in Bordeaux again
There is a great opportunity to continue to develop tourism and promote our wines
What are your main export markets and which areas are growing
We are staring to export a little to the UK and then have importers inSwitzerland
We would like to develop a little more in European countries
