arrested after at least one child killed and three injured at Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides school in Nantes
The French prime minister, François Bayrou, has called for a crackdown on teenage knife crime after a high-school student stabbed four other children at his school, killing at least one and injuring the others before being arrested.
The 15-year-old reportedly attacked fellow students with a knife during lunch break on Thursday at the private Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides secondary school in the city of Nantes on the Atlantic coast. The attack took place at around 12.30pm (11.30am BST), before teachers overpowered the boy. One female student was killed. At least one other student is in a critical condition in hospital.
“This tragedy shows once again the endemic violence that exists in a part of our youth,” Bayrou said in a statement. “Fundamental questions must be asked in terms of education, values and respect for human life.”
He ordered checks inside and around schools to be intensified immediately. He also said a commission would look into how to deal with teenage knife crime in terms of weapons sales, and the owning and carrying of knives. It would study best practice in other countries across the world.
Praising the “bravery” of the teachers who intervened, the French president, Emmanuel Macron, said the whole nation shared in the school’s shock and grief.
A police source told France Info that the boy had first targeted a pupil on the second floor of the school and had then attacked three others coming down the stairs. He had gone into two classrooms, the source said. France Info also reported that the boy was carrying two knives.
The boy was in police custody and a psychiatric assessment was being carried out, France Télévisions reported.
The education minister, Élisabeth Borne, and the interior minister, Bruno Retailleau, travelled to the school to show “solidarity with victims and the school community”.
Images from the scene showed police and troops surrounding the school as the investigation began.
An official at the school, which is part of a complex housing a primary and middle school, would not comment on what happened. They said the school was concentrating on caring for the students who were on campus at the time.
The school administration sent a message to the families of the 2,000 or so students who attend the school, informing them of the incident. Students had been immediately confined inside the school.

PARIS (AP) — The race for the remaining Champions League places behind Paris Saint-Germain remains wide open in the French league after Marseille drew 1-1 at Lille on Sunday.
With two rounds of matches left, and PSG already crowned champion, second-placed Marseille missed the chance to open up a three-point gap on Monaco after goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli's blunder in the 74th minute.
The top three teams qualify for the group stage of the Champions League, with the fourth team getting a spot in the qualifying rounds. Marseille has a one-point lead over Monaco, which won 3-1 at Saint-Etienne on Saturday, with a trio of chasing teams — Nice, Lille and Strasbourg — lagging one point further back.
Lille striker Jonathan David intercepted Rulli's attempted pass inside the box and headed the ball toward Matias Fernandez Pardo, who shot past the goakeeper into the back of the net. Amine Gouiri had put Marseille in front in the 57th minute from Adrien Rabiot's assist at the conclusion of a fine collective move.
Lyon's hopes of European soccer next season took a blow as the seven-time French champions lost 2-1 against Lens.
Anass Zaroury scored the winner with a superb 30-meter strike into the top corner five minutes from time, soon after Georges Mikautadze leveled for the hosts with a header.
The result left Lyon outside of the European places, six points above eighth-placed Lens.
Lyon enjoyed much of the possession but lacked a cutting edge and went behind when Goduine Koyalipou scored following a corner in the 21st minute.
Substitute Jim Allevinah scored his first goal for Angers in the French league as his club won 1-0 at Nantes to leapfrog its rival and take a big step towards survival in the top division.
In a match of few chances for both squads, Allevinah scored with a low strike in the 52nd minute. It was the first shot on target in the match.
Allevinah, a Gabon international, came on after 20 minutes as a replacement for the injured Zinedine Ferhat.
Angers moved to 14th place in the standings, one point above Nantes and two points above Le Havre, currently in the relegation playoff spot. Le Havre won 2-1 at Auxerre to move four points above the drop zone.
PSG suffered consecutive Ligue 1 losses for the first time in more than two years when it lost 2-1 at Strasbourg on Saturday.
With the match coming between the two legs of the Champions League semifinal against Arsenal, PSG coach Luis Enrique rotated his team, making 10 changes to his staring lineup. PSG will defend a 1-0 lead from the first leg on Wednesday at the Parc des Princes against the Gunners.
Also, Brest beat last-placed Montpellier 1-0.

At least one person has been killed and three others wounded in a stabbing attack at a high school in the western French city of Nantes, police say.
The 15-year-old suspect stabbed four people with a knife during a lunch break at the private Catholic Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides High School, a national police official said.
Teachers subdued him and he was later arrested by police, the official said.
The suspect had sent an email with unspecified grievances to all students just before the attack, students at the school told French media at the scene.
One of the targeted students died of their wounds.
Three others were wounded, including one who was hospitalised in "very serious condition," Nantes Mayor Johanna Rolland told reporters.
She did not give details about the suspect, but raised concerns about ″the mental health of the youth of this country."
Such fatal attacks are quite rare in French schools.
France's Prime Minister François Bayrou ordered tighter security inside and outside schools nationwide and called for new proposals within four weeks for preventing and punishing knife violence by teens and children.
He said metal detectors at schools could be considered.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said the attack was "probably" an isolated act, without providing details about the investigation.
The school confined the students inside for hours while police secured the site and carried out questioning, according to French media.
Police and armed military forces surrounded the area and worried parents waited outside the perimeter.
French President Emmanuel Macron praised the courage of the teachers who intervened, saying in a post on X that they "undoubtedly prevented other dramas."
An official at the school, which is part of a complex housing a primary and middle school, would not comment on what happened, saying the school is concentrating on caring for the students who were on campus at the time.
"A terrible drama happened at midday today and my thoughts go first to the teenage girl who lost her life and to the three wounded students" and their families, Education Minister Elisabeth Borne said.
The teachers "are in shock, and at the same time, very mobilized to return to class."
France's counterterrorism prosecutor's office said it was ‘"evaluating" the incident, but did not take over the investigation as it does when terrorist motives are suspected.
Counterterrorism agencies across Europe and beyond have warned recently about a new generation of underage attackers or plotters who have fed on ultraviolent and potentially radicalising content online.

The 15-year-old suspect was overpowered by teachers at the school in Nantes

A high school student has been killed and three others injured in a school stabbing attack in western France, police have said.
The alleged culprit, a 15-year-old student, was tackled by teachers and overpowered after the attack at around 12.30pm at the Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides school near the town hall of Doulon, in Nantes.
Police arrested him at the scene, which is now also swarming with army officers, medics and fire officers, as the investigation into the attack gets underway.
There is no indication of a terrorist motive, the police spokesperson added. The motive is currently unknown.
According to preliminary investigations, police believe the student entered two classrooms before carrying out the stabbing and subsequently being subdued, Le Parisien reported.
Recalling the chaos following the attack, one second-year student described people running around the courtyard, as someone held a door open shouting for them to get out.
“I was in the foyer, we saw a lot of people running around the courtyard, I heard that someone had a knife,” the student told Ouest-France.
“We didn't know whether to believe it. Then we saw someone from IT holding the door to the high school building, he was yelling at us to get out. We took refuge with the middle school students. I just learned that a student had died..."
Another student said: “We were in the labs, the tension started to rise after the alarm sounded. We saw the police arrive. We stayed confined to the classrooms and then went out into the courtyard. We learned that teachers had intervened.”
Another student, who is in their final year at high school, told the outlet: "We're very shocked. We only see this on television. We didn't think it could happen in our high school.”
Nantes mayor Johanna Rolland told reporters that one of those injured was in "very serious condition”. She did not give details about the suspect, but raised concerns about "the mental health of the youth of this country”.
France's prime minister Francois Bayrou ordered tighter security outside and inside schools nationwide, and called for new proposals within four weeks for preventing and punishing knife violence by teens and children. He said metal detectors at schools could be considered.
French education minister Elisabeth Borne said in a post on X: “A knife attack took place this afternoon at a private school in Nantes.
“I am going there with [interior minister] Bruno Retailleau to express my solidarity with the victims and my support for the educational community.”

It's the first of two games in three days for the league champions
The Parisians have a good record against Les Canaris, winning 51.9% of their 108 meetings. They are also unbeaten in their five Ligue 1 meetings
IMAGO / StarfaceAhead of Tuesday's game
here are five classic Ligue 1 matches between Paris Saint-Germain and Nantes
IMAGO / Panoramic by PsnewZAfter four seasons away from the top division
Nantes returned to Ligue 1 for the 2014-14 season
they faced PSG after losing their first two games
When Edinson Cavani gave the away team the lead in the 24th minute
it looked like another loss was on the cards
The home team may have thought they could pick up their first points when Alex put it into his own net to make it 1-1
Ezequiel Lavezzi put the Parisians ahead in the 74th minute
securing their first win of the season after drawing the first two
IMAGO / StarfaceA six-goal thriller at the Parc des Princes
resulting in three crucial points for the Parisians
It looked like it would be a straightforward win for the home team
going 2-0 up in the first 17 minutes through Lionel Messi and a Jaouen Hadjam own goal
Ludovic Blas (31') and Ignatius Ganago (38') leveled the game before half-time
Danilo Pereira headed home from a Kylian Mbappe cross on the hour mark
The Frenchman made sure of the three points in stoppage time
IMAGO / Panoramic by PsnewZLes Canaris recorded a famous win over Paris Saint-Germain at the back end of the 2018-19 season
PSG took the lead through Dani Alves (19')
The home team took the lead a minute before half-time
it was 3-1 when Dani Alves scored at the wrong end
Metehan Güclü made things interesting in the 89th minute
but the home side held on for a big victory
IMAGO / ABACAPRESSNantes was relegated during the 2008-09 season; losing home and away against the Parisians did not help
Ludovic Giuly (12') and Péguy Luyindula (21') gave the away side a 2-0 lead
but Nantes pulled one back before half-time
Djamel Abdoun scoring from the penalty spot
It was the best it got for Les Canaris as Giuly (50') made it a brace before Stéphane Sessègnon (71') made it 4-1
The three points kept PSG in the title race but
IMAGO / Panoramic by PsnewZPSG took the three points in an eventful last 15 minutes of the game
The Parisians led in the first two minutes
Things looked like they could get tricky for Mauricio Pochettino's side when goalkeeper Keylor Navas was shown a straight red for flattening a Nantes player when trying to make a clearance
Randal Kolo Muani made it 1-1 against the 10 men
A Dennis Appiah own goal (81') and Lionel Messi (87') gave the home side the win despite playing the final 25 minutes with one less man

PARIS (AP) — Riot police played their part as Le Havre won 2-0 at Nantes on Sunday in a French league match interrupted and then restarted during second-half stoppage time after disgruntled home fans tried to get on the field
The police formed a line in front of one of the stands
Referee Jérôme Brisard then led the players off
with only about three minutes remaining in stoppage time
After the Brigade Loire had left the Stade de La Beaujoire
the match was deemed safe to resume 35 minutes later
and the final three minutes were played in a somber atmosphere
The defeat dropped eight-time French champion Nantes into 16th place in the 18-team league
It’s rare to experience this kind of thing
but you can understand things from a fan’s point of view,” Nantes striker Ignatius Ganago told match broadcaster DAZN
After Josué Casimir had scored in the third minute for Le Havre
the match was halted for a few minutes when tennis balls and toilet paper were thrown onto the pitch by some home fans
with Nantes players helping to clear the debris on the field
Forward Steve Ngoura doubled the lead in the 74th for Le Havre
Nice rallied to beat midtable Strasbourg 2-1 and move up to fifth place
Striker Dilane Bakwa put the Alsace-based side ahead in the 20th
before defender Melvin Bard equalized in the 54th from midfielder Sofiane Diop’s pass behind the defense
Diop’s pass forced an own-goal from Abakar Sylla in the 62nd when trying to pass back to goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic
Nice is two points behind fourth-place Lille after 12 rounds
Edon Zhegrova continued his fine form with the only goal as Lille beat Rennes 1-0 to stay one point behind Marseille in third
The Kosovo winger started and finished the move in the 45th minute with one of his trademark darting runs from the right flank
Zhegrova combined with Rémy Cabella and striker Jonathan David before firing past veteran goalkeeper Steve Mandanda with his left foot
It was his fourth league goal of the season and he is well set to beat his mark of six from the last campaign
The 25-year-old Zhegrova made similar attacking runs when Lille drew 1-1 with Juventus in the Champions League three weeks ago
providing a superb assist for David’s goal
He thought he had set David up for a goal against Rennes in the 57th
but the effort was ruled out for a narrow offside
Zhegrova clutched his left groin near the end and was given an ovation by the home fans when he went off
Sampaoli has become famed within soccer for his short temper
The 64-year-old Argentine was irate when Rennes defener Mikayil Faye had to change his socks before coming on as a replacement for the injured Alidu Seidu early in the first half
Faye did not have the correct socks on and
had to sit down on the side of the pitch and slip the right ones on
midfielder Hamed Traorè scored three minutes into stoppage time as seventh-place Auxerre won 1-0 against lowly Angers

Siemens Healthineers and the University Hospital Nantes (CHU de Nantes) in France will collaborate over a period of 12 years to make innovations in diagnostic and interventional imaging available for several hospitals and their patients across the department Loire-Atlantique
With a total amount of €55 million this Value Partnership1 is the biggest one established in France to date.
The agreement focuses on 13 public hospitals
that are being supported by the University Hospital in Nantes
It includes installing and servicing new imaging equipment
collaborating on research and education allowing efficient purchasing and improving sustainable operations.
the group of hospitals will replace existing equipment with the latest technological advancements such as nine computed tomography (CT) scanners
including the option of Siemens Healthineers photon-counting CT technology as well as six magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners
also featuring Siemens Healthineers virtually helium-free MRI2
Planned installations for image-guided interventions include 30 mobile C-arms equipped with digital solutions as well as a further nine angiography systems supporting interventional neurology
As the University Hospital Nantes will move to a new main facility by 2027
the program is also designed to ensure an optimal transition
Siemens Healthineers will support the hospital’s imaging teams during the move to ensure continuity
the established Value Partnership provides planning security due to a clear financial framework
The program is called PIMENT (Partenariat pour l’Imagerie Médicale des Établissements du Territoire 44 – Partnership for the Medical Imaging of the Establishments of Territory 44).
“This purchasing strategy is an opportunity for the department’s medical teams and patients as they will benefit from cutting-edge solutions and high-level care – also in the context of the preparations for the new hospital,” says Philippe El Saïr
this bold initiative includes all of our 13 public hospitals in territory 44 and will contribute in a major way to putting the sites on an economically equal footing.”
Middle East and Africa at Siemens Healthineers
says: “I am honored by the trust that the University Hospital in Nantes places in Siemens Healthineers
This long-term innovation and technology partnership is one of the first of its kind with a leading public University Hospital network in Europe and it is a proof point for our strategy to partner with leading healthcare providers to support them in shaping the transformation of healthcare
the PIMENT program will enable us to jointly move forward in establishing more sustainable delivery of patient care while enhancing clinical outcomes through scientific collaboration – always having the benefit of patients in mind.”
The PIMENT program also includes creating a laboratory for fundamental and applied research in medical imaging
Siemens Healthineers will provide seed funding to accelerate local research projects
employees of the company will support these endeavors over the next 12 years
clinical scientists dedicated to each type of scanner
as well as doctoral and post-doctoral students
Siemens Healthineers will ensure the continuous training of the medical teams on the equipment and digital solutions.
Sustainability is another integral part of this program
Siemens Healthineers will upgrade MRI systems to significantly extend their lifecycle
The latest generation of hardware and software can be installed around the already existing magnet
which enhances clinical capabilities while saving resources and reducing the equipment’s environmental footprint
new virtually helium-free MRI2 systems by Siemens Healthineers will be installed that reduce the amount of this scarce resource from several hundreds of liters required previously to less than one liter
Siemens Healthineers will provide energy monitoring infrastructure and consulting services

2025 at 7:03 AM UTC·1 min readLuis Enrique is expected to continue to rotate when Paris Saint-Germain pay a trip to relegation-threatened FC Nantes on Tuesday night
PSG are nonetheless looking to go an entire domestic season unbeaten – a record never achieved in by a French side
Against Les Canaris, Luis Enrique has a full squad to pick from
with the only absentee from the weekend win over Le Havre AC
Ousmane Dembélé has been rested in Ligue 1 in recent weeks
there may not be any place in the starting line-up for Bradley Barcola or the in-form Désiré Doué
Lee Kang-in may get the nod on the right of the attack with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on the left

It was a scoreless first half between the two squads
it was Angers who had the most total shots with eight while Nantes only recorded two
Alexandre Dujeux and his team would eventually turn those shots into a goal in the second half
Of the six total shots in the final 45 minutes
the one from Jim Allevinah in the 52nd minute would break the scoreless deadlock

Nantes were better offensively in the second half
who made three saves in the final 45 minutes to deny the home side a goal and record a clean sheet in the win
The three points allow Angers to move into 14th place in the table with 33 points while the loss puts Nantes in 15th place with 32 points and right on the edge of the relegation playoff spot
Dujeux spoke to the media at his press conference
sharing his thoughts on a result that brings Angers one step closer to staying in France’s top flight
I often talk about this team’s moral values
and today we showed a lot of determination
Safety isn’t mathematically secured yet—nothing is done
and we’re happy we got to share it with our supporters.”
It’s been a challenging 2024–25 season for Nantes
and after conceding a goal in the loss to Angers
they’ve now allowed 51 goals through their first 32 Ligue 1 McDonald's matches — the most at this stage of a season since the 1969–70 campaign

Nantes likely line-up v PSG: Alban Lafont to make unlikely returnGet French Football NewsApril 22
2025 at 7:18 AM UTC·1 min readSince Anthony Lopes joined FC Nantes in January from Olympique Lyonnais
Alban Lafont has been nowhere near the first-team
The former Toulouse FC has not even been included in matchday squads
he is expected to start against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night
Lafont’s demotion was dramatic and in recent weeks
he has been playing for the club’s reserve side in the National 3
Lopes sustained an injury during the 2-1 defeat to Stade Rennais on Friday and has not sufficiently recovered
Lafont therefore gets a recall for Nantes and is set to start against PSG
whilst Francis Coquelin remains sidelined with injury
Sorba Thomas has been left out of the matchday entirely

Scorers: Vitinha 33'; Augusto 83'
PSG controlled possession in the opening stages and eventually took the lead through Vitinha's half-volley past Patrik Carlgren.
João Neves nearly doubled Les Parisiens' lead before the break with a powerful strike that Carlgen pushed to safety.
Nantes looked more positive after half time and Jean-Charles Castelletto's strike was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The hosts faced late heavy pressure but stunned PSG on the counter-attack as Douglas Augusto fired a first-time shot from the edge of the area into the top corner.
Gonçalo Ramos almost restored PSG's lead when his header crashed off the crossbar in injury time.
Augusto's late stunner boosted Nantes' survival chances as they sit four points above the relegation zone, while PSG's 10-match winning run in Ligue 1 came to an end.
A 15-year-old boy killed a fellow pupil and injured three others in a stabbing attack at a high school in the western French city of Nantes on Thursday, before he was overpowered by teachers, police said.
BFM TV reported that the student who died was a girl and that the three wounded students were boys. Police did not confirm the age or gender of the victims.
Teaching staff subdued the attacker at the Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides, a private Catholic school, before police arrived, a police spokesperson said.
She said there was nothing to indicate a terrorist motive.
The suspect had earlier sent an email with unspecified grievances to all students just before the attack, pupils at the school told French media at the scene.
One of the injured pupils was in a “very serious condition″ in hospital, Nantes Mayor Johanna Rolland told reporters. She did not give details about the suspect, but raised concerns about ″the mental health of the youth of this country″.
Interior minister Bruno Retailleau said the attack was ″probably″ an isolated act, without providing details about the investigation.
The school confined the students inside for hours while police secured the site and carried out questioning, French broadcast reports said. Police and armed military forces surrounded the area, and worried parents waited outside the perimeter.
French president Emmanuel Macron praised the courage of the teachers who intervened, saying in a post on X that they ″undoubtedly prevented other dramas″.
An official at the school, which is part of a complex housing a primary and middle school, would not comment on what happened, saying the school was concentrating on caring for the students who were on campus at the time.
Education minister Elisabeth Borne said: “A terrible drama happened at midday today, and my thoughts go first to the teenage girl who lost her life, and to the three wounded students.” The teachers “are in shock, and at the same time, very mobilised to return to class”.
Students were allowed to leave school in the midafternoon under police protection. Dozens of parents waited outside.
“We’re waiting to be able to hold them in our arms ... to help them deal with the stress this will have caused,” said one parent, Nicolas.
Police did not name the suspect or give any motives for the attack.
Local newspaper Ouest France said the attacker was dressed all in black, and wore a helmet and balaclava. Two knives were found lying next to his belongings, it said.
BFM and other media reported that the suspected attacker, using his email account, had emailed a document to all students in the school in which he painted a bleak picture of society, but had not made any mention of a possible attack.
French broadcaster Franceinfo said the stabbing followed a conflict among students.
Police did not immediately confirm the media reports. - Reuters and Associated Press

We started this video project two years ago with a tour in Marseille
We were supposed to do the video in one year
We did a last tour in Bordeaux to finish the project
However more than half of the video is filmed in Nantes
it was the idea at first to film a lot in our town to show everybody that we have a lot of good spots
It’s the first big video project we've done so it was a good experience and a lot of fun for the team
Thibaud put a lot of effort to have a part so it took him a long time to get really into it and to film again like it was 20 years ago
The video just got finished for the 20-year anniversary of the shop
Thanks to all the people that helped us in this project and to the team for the motivation

PSG’s Luis Enrique says lessons learnt from Nantes low-block could apply to Arsenal encounterGet French Football NewsApril 23
2025 at 9:05 AM UTC·1 min readParis Saint-Germain struggled to break FC Nantes down on Tuesday night as the Ligue 1 champions were held to a 1-1 draw at the Beaujoire
With the Ligue 1 title already secured, Les Parisiens nonetheless want to retain their invincibility in the league and become the first French side to go a whole season unbeaten
it is clear that the UEFA Champions League is the priority
Achraf Hakimi was notably rested against Les Canaris, whilst Ousmane Dembélé was featured less prominently in Ligue 1 in recent weeks
PSG looked out of sorts as they struggled to break through Nantes’ low-block
Despite taking the lead through Vitinha midway through the first half
Les Canaris looked dangerous on the counter-attack and got a late goal through Douglas Augusto to secure what for them could be a valuable point in their fight against relegation
Whilst a different sort of game will be expected against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League next week
Luis Enrique believes that some of the lessons learnt could aid Les Parisiens’ preparation. “We need to know what Arsenal we will face
The PSG manager added, “Here (at Nantes) we lacked movement off the ball at the start of the match
We changed things and we broke into the opposition half without the ball more.”
“I don’t want to be here.” Nantes head coach Antoine Kombouaré storms out of press conferenceGet French Football NewsJanuary 2
2025 at 12:16 PM UTC·2 min readNantes head coach Antoine Kombouaré faced the press this Thursday for his usual pre-game press conference this Thursday as Les Canaris face Lille OSC on Saturday evening at Stade Pierre-Mauroy
the press conference was cut short with Kombouaré launching a rather extraordinary rant to the media attending his presser
The former PSG manager berated the journalists for having reported he would be dismissed with Nantes sitting 14th in the Ligue 1 standings
Former Valenciennes head coach Ahmed Kantari and Olivier Blondel – Lyon reserves’ goalkeeping coach – all joined Nantes
Kombouaré said he was extremely bothered that all journalists covering the Loire-Atlantique club were unanimous on the fact that he would no longer coach Nantes as of today
“I expected written apologies from you because you guys got it completely wrong
I’ll be unpleasant and mean because I don’t want to be here
I’m letting you work here but I’m out of here
